Leslie Phillips, who has died aged 98, was a light comedian of the old school, closely associated with a roster of smooth-talking cads and lady-killers in the series of Carry On and Doctor films he graced from the late 1950s onwards.

He first coined his trademark phrase “I say, ding dong!” as the lubricious Jack Bell in Carry On Nurse (1958) and made the simple greeting “hello” sound like a frolicsome, impure invitation, earning him the nickname “King Leer” and lending itself to the one-word title of his immensely entertaining autobiography (2006).

He became a national Sunday lunchtime institution on BBC Radio’s The Navy Lark, in which he appeared as a hopeless lieutenant on HMS Troutbridge – alongside Stephen Murray, Jon Pertwee, Tenniel Evans, Heather Chasen and Ronnie Barker – between 1959 and 1977. It was never clear – deliberately so – whether he was a simpleton or a crook in this company of Royal Navy undesirables on the recommissioned frigate stationed off Portsmouth.

Despite his louche and carefree acting persona, Phillips was an ambitious and hard-working artist who in the late 60s toured the world in his own West End hit, The Man Most Likely To... – he rewrote Joyce Rayburn’s play, took the lead, produced and directed it.

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in his mid-70s and featured in several major films, including George Cukor’s Les Girls (1957), with Gene Kelly and Kay Kendall, Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa (1985), Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun (1987) and Roger Michell’s Venus (2007), playing an old thespian alongside Peter O’Toole and Richard Griffiths.

His prodigious work-rate derived from his impoverished background in Tottenham, north London, where from an early age he was the family breadwinner. His suave and polished persona was as much a creation as that of Terry-Thomas or Rex Harrison, and it gave his acting an edge of seditious malice, an air of unofficial naughtiness.

With the confidence that came from being told frequently he was a good-looking lad he developed a taste for fast cars, high living and beautiful women when the money rolled in. For a time he was the highest earning actor on the West End stage, and joined the Ibiza crowd in the 70s, keeping a house there in a colony of artists and writers that included his great friend Denholm Elliott.

He was married three times and had a long relationship (between the first and second marriages) with Caroline Mortimer, the daughter of Penelope Mortimer and step-daughter of John Mortimer, both writers.

This was all a far cry from his humble beginnings as the third child of Cecelia (nee Newlove) and Frederick Phillips, a maker of cookers at Glover & Main in Edmonton. The family moved from Tottenham to Chingford, by the river Lea and on the fringes of Epping Forest, in an attempt to improve Frederick’s health, but he died of a chest illness in 1935, and Cecelia, spotting an advert in a newspaper, packed her son off to the Italia Conti school to train as an actor.

Phillips had shown talent in plays at Chingford school and soon supplemented his income from delivering papers and singing at weddings and funerals in All Saints Church, Chingford, by playing a wolf – his stage debut, in 1937, aged 13 – in Peter Pan, starring Anna Neagle, at the London Palladium.

After a spell as a cherub in a stained glass window in Dorothy L Sayers’s The Zeal of Thy House at the Garrick, he returned to the Palladium for the 1938 production of Peter Pan, now playing John Darling in a cast led by Seymour Hicks (“vile”, according to Phillips) as Captain Hook and Jean Forbes-Robertson (“lovely”) as Peter.

By the time he was called up in 1942, he had sung in the children’s chorus at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and acted with John Gielgud and Marie Tempest in Dodie Smith’s Dear Octopus at the Queen’s – the start of a long association with the producers Binkie Beaumont and HM Tennent – and Vivien Leigh and Cyril Cusack in Shaw’s The Doctor’s Dilemma at the Haymarket.

Everyone in the business liked him, and this would stand him in good stead after the second world war. He sounded posh enough to gain a commission as second lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, transferring to the Durham Light Infantry, where he was put in charge of the Suffolk transit camp at Chadacre Hall, before being invalided out in 1944.

His first post-demob job was in the box office at the Lyric, Hammersmith. He played Guildenstern in Hamlet at Dundee rep, and discovered his talent for light comedy in a stint at the York rep. His first major West End role was in a sentimental comedy, Daddy Long Legs (1946), at the Comedy (now the Harold Pinter).

The first of more than 100 film appearances came in Lassie for Lancashire (1938). The Hollywood adventure of Les Girls could have led to a latter-day C Aubrey Smith-style career in California, but he preferred London and Pinewood Studios – he was the last living actor to have worked there when they opened. He was also in the cast of the first live BBC broadcast from Alexandra Palace in 1948 – Morning Departure, set on a wartime submarine with Michael Hordern – and played his first BBC television lead in 1952 in My Wife Jacqueline (opposite Joy Shelton), a pioneering but mediocre (he said) sitcom about married life, broadcast live from Lime Grove in six 30-minute episodes.

Over the next 10 years he established himself in the Doctor films as the philandering consultant, Dr Tony Burke, and in the Carry Ons, usually stuck on Joan Sims. He followed the huge stage success of the superb farce Boeing-Boeing (taking over from David Tomlinson in 1963) with the first series of Our Man at St Mark’s on television, in which he played an eccentric new village vicar. When his affair, while still married, with Caroline Mortimer became public, he was no longer deemed suitable as a clergyman, and was succeeded in later series by Donald Sinden.

Opening at the Vaudeville in 1968, he played 655 performances as the upper-class lounge lizard Victor Cadwallader in The Man Most Likely To… and later toured to Australia (where one audience member in Adelaide was reported to have literally died laughing), New Zealand and South Africa, defying the cultural boycott and working in the townships as well as the commercial theatres.

He played in another “saucy” comedy, Sextet, at the Criterion in 1977 (Julian Fellowes was also in the cast), and then led a hugely successful revival of Ray Cooney and John Chapman’s Not Now, Darling at the Savoy in 1979, followed by another world tour.

Phillips said that he at last broke his own mould when cast by Lindsay Anderson as a dithering, weak-willed Gayev in The Cherry Orchard at the Haymarket in 1983 (Joan Plowright played his sister), and he went even further in a brilliant revival by Mike Ockrent of Peter Nichols’s lacerating comedy Passion Play at the Leicester Haymarket, and then Wyndham’s in the West End, in 1984. In 1990, he popped up unexpectedly in The Comic Strip and, also on television, in Chancer, which launched Clive Owen, playing Owen’s scheming boss.

There was now no pattern or predictability as he entered the last phase of an astonishing career. He played the professor in another Chekhov, Julian Mitchell’s rewrite of Uncle Vanya, August, with Anthony Hopkins at Theatr Clwyd, Mold (1994), and then joined the RSC to play a fruity saloon bar roué of a Falstaff in Ian Judge’s The Merry Wives of Windsor (1996) on the main Stratford-upon-Avon stage and, in the Swan, a cynical hotelier in Steven Pimlott’s discovery of Tennessee Williams’s “lost” fantasia, Camino Real. Also in 1996, he played a frisky old Sir Sampson Legend in Love for Love by William Congreve at the Chichester Festival theatre.

On the Whole, It’s Been Jolly Good was the appropriate title of a Peter Tinniswood one-man play he took to the Edinburgh Fringe in 1999, reverting to more raffish type as Sir Plympton Makepeace, a bitterly “dumped” Tory MP from the Shires with no good to say of anyone: “That woman with the loud voice … I think she was the PM but to me she looked like a power-mad swimming baths attendant.” His last stage appearance came as an ageing judge with a back problem in John Mortimer’s Naked Justice at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2001.

In the new millennium he had good TV roles in Monarch of the Glen and Miss Marple. An excellent television version of Evelyn Waugh’s Sword of Honour trilogy, adapted by William Boyd (2002), had him in the role of Gervase Crouchback, father of Daniel Craig’s anti-heroic Guy, and he regained his dog collar in Nigel Cole’s charming movie Saving Grace (2000), starring Blenda Blethyn. For the Harry Potter films he voiced the Sorting Hat at Hogwarts.

In 1997 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Evening Standard, and 10 years later another from the Critics’ Circle. In 1998 he was appointed OBE, and in 2008 CBE.

Phillips married the actor Penelope Bartley in 1948, and they had two sons and two daughters. They divorced in 1965, and in 1982 he married the actor Angela Scoular; she took her own life in 2011. Two years later he married Zara Carr, and she survives him, along with his children.

NOLA, or The Big Easy as its residents refer to it, is known around the world as the metropolis of jazz, Creole cuisine, and a distinct dialect.

New Orleans, located in southeastern Louisiana, is described as beautiful, colorful, relaxing, and fun.

It is a city of French and Spanish ancestry with strong African-American characteristics, exhibiting American pluralism via architecture, music, and cuisine.

Since President Thomas Jefferson purchased New Orleans for $15 million from Napoleon Bonaparte, it has been a great American rare.

Immersing yourself in its French Quarter is like stepping back in time to the 18th century, while also taking in the cultural distinctives that have been added during the 19th and 20th centuries to create this the country's most eclectic city.

Due to its origins on the banks of the famous Mississippi River, it has a large ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity, as well as one of the most important musical diversity in the United States. 1. Go to New Orleans' French Quarter.

These qualities also represent this metropolis, particularly when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 and wreaked havoc on the city. After winning the Super Bowl, the team's fans elevated them to the status of heroes.

3. Get to know New Orleans by riding the streetcars.

4. Louis Armstrong Park and Congo Square

Congo Square is a historically significant square. New Orleans was the only city in the northern United States that allowed slaves to meet in public and play their native music during the French colonial era, when slaves were transported.

On Sundays, their one day off, they met in Congo Square to do so. Today, it is part of Louis Armstrong Park, which was once known as "La Place des Negres" by the settlers, where they sang, played music, and sold homemade cuisine. As a result, it may be stated that in the early twentieth century, Congo Square gave birth to an era's worth of indigenous music: Jazz.

5. Treat your ears to some music at Preservation Hall.

The Preservation Hall, located on St. Peter Street in the center of the French Quarter, is a historic location where you can enjoy acoustic jazz music in an intimate setting practically every day of the year. Every day, the facility has a cast of more than 50 local musicians who perform in various formats.

If you come in on any given night, you'll be treated to the sight and sound of local and resident musicians improvising great tunes. If you appreciate this type of music, New Orleans holds one of the country's largest jazz events, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which takes place every year.

6. Historic Voodoo Museum in New Orleans

New Orleans was the core of the slave trade and commerce in the United States before the abolition of slavery in the 18th century. During this period, the slaves' cultural and religious traditions, which originated mostly in Africa and Haiti, were assimilated into the metropolis. Voodoo was one of the city's most enduring traditions.

After centuries, the city of New Orleans established the New Orleans Historic Vodoo Museum, which is solely committed to educate people about African culture and religion. Throughout history, ritual books and voodoo dolls or amulets have been found here.

7. Take a walk in City Park in New Orelans to get some fresh air.

City Park, one of the city's main green lungs, situated roughly 3 miles northwest of the French Quarter. With a total area of 5.3 square kilometers, you can breathe fresh air while exploring centuries-old oak forests, walking routes, biking paths, lakes, picnic places, and more. The New Orleans Museum of Art, as well as the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, a garden full of free sculptures and the New Orleans Botanical Garden, are all located inside the park's borders.

The park also features two stadiums, golf courses, rugby and soccer grounds, and hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including weddings and the Vodoo Music + Arts Experience, which is the largest music festival in the world.

8. The New Orleans Museum of Art is number eight on the list.

If you enjoy art, the New Orleans Museum of Art - NOMA - is a must-see in New Orleans. The museum, which is located within the magnificent City Park, has an extensive art collection of 40,000 items covering 5,000 years of history, as well as a sculpture garden in City Park that is open to the public for free.

Nearly a dozen old plantations with gorgeous houses and exquisite gardens can be found about 50 miles west of Downtown, along the Mississippi River. Whitney Plantation, Laura Plantation, and Felicity Plantation are a few examples. A visit to Oak Alley Plantation is highly recommended.

You'll need at least 2 hours to absorb 200 years of history and tour all of the properties of this old sugar plantation, when roughly a hundred slaves worked between the field and the house as men, women, and children.

10. Take a Mississippi River cruise

I urge that you see New Orleans from a different vantage point. Get to know it by taking a trip down the Mississippi River on the Natchez, Louisiana's most famous steamboat. It would be nearly difficult to truly appreciate New Orleans without traveling down the Mississippi and aboard the Natchez.

You will not only go through the entire city of New Orleans on this expedition, but you will also travel through the states of Kentucky and Missouri, among others. Aboard this lovely old ship, you will have a wonderful time. Don't miss out on wonderful meals and fantastic musical performances!

11. Enjoy a meal at the historic Commander's Palace.

Well the court has ruled in the case regarding it is GM that the court can do that the records can be unsealed. This is in the case involving VRG! The floodgates will open as explosive documents detailing Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex life can be UNSEALED in Virginia Giuffre’s defamation case within a week!Judge Loretta Preska, in Manhattan ruled on Thursday to unseal more than 80 documents that GM had wanted to keep under wraps.The judge said the documents - which will run to hundreds of pages - should be made public within a week.They include flight logs from Epstein’s jets, a deposition in 2016 in which Maxwell’s lawyers said she was asked ‘intrusive’ questions about her sex life.The documents also include police reports from Palm Beach, Florida, where JE had a home. It will include communications between GM and JEfrom January 2015 when VRG made allegations about them in court papers. In the papers VRG claimed she was forced to have sex with Pa three times when she was just 17, at JE orders. The documents were part of a defamation lawsuit brought by VRG against GM, which was confidentially settled in 2017. The case is separate from the criminal proceedings against GM, who is accused of procuring girls as young as 14 for JE to abuse. There has been a reuptick in the cases of COVID-19 in various places around the world where the case that had kind of stabilized. We are seeing that in Canada as well in several provinces. In our country, it’s due to people gathering in large gatherings and then having what they call a super spreader. Then they return home and it spreads throughout their community. So as far as returning to school I think in many parts of the world that’s still up in the air. I’m thinking especially regarding our Cambridge children, they probably still do not know what they’re going to do. The Daily Mail has this amazing story today. I know people who don’t move stuff about. I used to always move my furniture around and decorate each season. Now the furniture moving….not so much🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 due to my back. But l love moving my special things AND decorating each season! There is a house stuck in time. An ex-Royal Navy sailor, 89, has left decor untouched since 1948 saying it’s saved him thousands. Doug Bethel, 89, from Liverpool, Merseyside, still lives in the house that his family first purchased in 1948. Following military service he was a gas engineer, now retired obviously, although men do still have a lot of “ gas” 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂especially around that age. Pardon my humour😂😂🤣😂☺️🤣🤣☺️. He has left his house untouched, when he returned to live with parents after leaving Royal Navy.Mr Bethel has kept his childhood bedroom untouched and still has the original kitchen and cooker in house. Since it was built, house has survived two explosions- one during the Second World War and another in 1986. This goes to show you how things are quality that were built back then last and stand the test of time. Now if you buy an appliance they’re made to be disposable they don’t last that long and it’s cheaper to buy a new one then to fix it. I would love to walk through this house and have him explain everything. That used to be my type of favourite patient to work with, the special patient who was seasoned as I should say , elderly , but I prefer the word seasoned and had lots of life stories and life lessons to tell. The pictures are amazing! The outside of the house looks a little rough but the inside is glorious! The floral wallpaper on the walls, my goodness it’s beautiful. He’s done an excellent job of taking care of everything it at all looks just spic and span.. Well that’s a phrase I haven’t used in a long time, spic and span. That’s what my mum used to always say when we cleaned the house and it was all done and she said yes things look spic and span. Does anyone else remember that phrase? I find it so incredibly sad. I spoke about it yesterday, to watch a man publicly mentally implode. Other than celebrities always naming their babies weird names you can see his illness evident in the names of their children as well. Kim has remained silent but she released a statement two days ago saying how heartbreaking it is that the family can do nothing to help him do it to the mental health laws there. Also the two of them have been considering divorce for quite some time. Yeah I having a chronic mental illness that has the phases that is dramatic and drastic as he is that doesn’t fit into the reality show a life of a perfect family does it? Let’s get rid of him .In my province, the family can go to the magistrate and get someone formed, it is a form that it’s a short word for the form that’s that’s filled out by the magistrate to compel the person to see a GP or ER , by police or RCMP escort if need be, and often is! They can compel them to see a doctor. Then if the doctor feels they need mental health assistance they can fill out a different form, transferred to Psychiatry and then they will be held against their will for 72 hours for assessment and after such a time as if it’s determined that the person is really in need of hospitalization then there is another form that the psychiatrists, two of them have to fill out and then they start treatment. The 72 hours is for assessment, therefore minimal meds given to allow a clear assessment. However in most cases the person by the time they reach the involuntarily assessment phase they are so ill that they cannot go 72 hours without treatment. They are either violence or acutely suicidal or both and there are various treatment modalities that are used.There’s also a review board process in this within 21 days they can apply to the review were to have the review board if you review the case to determine if it’s appropriately involuntarily hospitalized. The review were consists of psychiatrists nurses legal people and members of the community.

He is taking one lane of the already busy lanes of traffic in London and oh I don’t know how many miles I think 10 or 15 miles have already been done and I think there’s another equal amount being planned and they’ve been designated as bicycle lanes because he has this grand idea that people will cycle to work or cycle to downtown London and that way they can avoid using public transportation and less than their risk of coronavirus and basically that will drive the taxi drivers out of business and lessen the ability for disabled people to take the taxi because there are less places where they can pick up and drop off people because they cannot drive in those designated lanes. It’s really upset a lot of people. And in that with the obesity is that the stats are saying people with obesity and have a higher risk of dying from coal coronavirus. BIA Opens Entries for 2021 Brick in Architecture Awards

Reston, Va., August 16, 2021 — The Brick Industry Association (BIA) has opened entries for the international 2021 Brick in Architecture Awards, the premier architectural design competition featuring fired-clay brick.

Entries are due by Nov. 1, with 50% fewer required materials for faster submission. All submissions must use clay brick as the project’s primary building material. Entrants must be either an architect or designer employed by an architectural, design-build or landscaping design firm.

“The BIA Awards celebrate brick architectural design, a historic and timeless material with infinite possibilities,” said Gavri Slasky, AIA, LEED AP, associate, Stephen B. Jacobs Group P.C., New York, New York.

Per the competition rules, eligible projects include any work of architecture completed since January 1, 2016 in which new clay brick products comprise the predominant exterior building or paving material (over 50 percent) including: face or hollow brick, building brick, thin brick, paving brick, glazed brick, structural glazed facing tile, new clay brick products in special shapes and/or a combination of these.

“The BIA Awards are an excellent opportunity to showcase the craftsmanship of our masons in realizing our designs in brick,” said Carey Jackson Yance, LEED AP, RA, principal, CANNOdesign, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Debuting last year, an overall Craftsmanship Award will honor exceptionally artful installation by an individual mason or a team of masons.
