Hey Mel.
How are you doing?.
Was wondering if you would write a Sonny Corleone prompt that revolves around his wedding night?.
Much love ♥️
I'm doing well, thank you, lovely!! 💓✨ And Sonny x Sandra content?! 🥴 Ooh, I’m here for this!! Alright, Mr. Santino, here we go. 1935! 🥵😳
Many stolen kisses in the middle of the night, some “it’s alright baby, you know I only have eyes for you” said and one glistening diamond over Sandrinella Colombo’s ring finger for the past eight months was a promise Santino Corleone fulfilled earlier today.
The official papers were signed, blessings were said, the marriage officiated surrounded by family and all of Don Corleone’s business partners and colleagues to celebrate the first wedding of his children.
Sandra was a sight for sore eyes in her wedding gown and not only were her feet sore from dancing with Sonny and her friends to the hired, Italian band, but her jaw too from laughing and smiling so much—not to mention being able to kiss her husband in front of everyone for the first time.
Sonny and Sandra would have both been lying to themselves however if they said they weren’t thinking about the rest of the so called “festivities” the evening would offer after the celebration and gifts pouring in to surround the newly wed couple.
After the cake was cut and shared amongst the guests with a banquet feast that could comfortably feed hundreds and offer seconds, Sonny and Sandra’s wedding day ended with a slow dance at the front of the courtyard in the Corleone Estate before cheers and waves erupted from family and friends, wishing the newly wed couple all the best.
On sore feet and with a growing, insistent desire, Sonny had taken his new bride back to the limousine where they waved at the rest of the crowd that followed through; now heading to their newly furnished home together.
It was the first time Sonny and Sandra had stepped into the home together, although the two had visited periodically to select rugs, décor, curtains and all sorts of furnishings to their hearts content as they counted the days to their wedding.
Sonny’s days of womanizing had come to an end once he got engaged to Sandra, both as a result of Carmela and Vito keeping a watchful eye on their promiscuous son and the fact that Sonny found himself yearning and desiring Sandra more and more by the day.
Now that Sandra and Sonny had arrived home, neither of them took time to appreciate the surroundings of their new house.
Sonny had scooped Sandra up in his arms bridal style as she giggled; a proud grin on his face as he led her inside and straight up the stairs to their bedroom.
While Sonny could feel himself growing more and more aroused the closer he took Sandra to the bedroom, Sandra felt the same yet a little bit nervous.
Sandra had always been wildly attracted to Sonny, especially sexually, and she had also taken one too many peeks at Sonny’s abnormally large bulge in his dress trousers before.
Had it not been for the traditional Sicilian courting both Sonny and Sandra’s parents strictly insisting on (knowing Sonny’s promiscuity), the two may as well have been fucking like rabbits whenever they had the chance.
Now though was the official wedding night—a night certain to be filled with bliss, intimacy, and lots of sweaty, sloppy sex with Sonny and his new bride.
When Sonny got into the bedroom with Sandra, she practically hopped off his arms to undress. Of course, all Sonny had to do was take off his bowtie and throw off the rest of his suit, but Sandra’s dress was a lot more complex and daintier.
Sonny’s erection had already been uncomfortably tenting up in his dress trousers as Sandra slipped out of her wedding dress, letting it rest carefully over the chaise lounge in the bedroom.
Sonny had grown sexually frustrated, saying, “come on, baby. How long are you gonna tease me taking that thing off?”
“Just a second.” Sandra blushed, now only in a white lacy bra and panties as she turned around to face her new husband.
Sonny would have snatched Sandra onto the bed instantly had it not been for the fact he had never seen Sandra so intimately before.
‘Hell of a wait.’ Sonny thought to himself, but his eyes happily and hungrily darted up and down the half naked body of his new wife who unhooked her bra off in front of him.
Sandra’s breasts spilled free, jiggling a little as the fabric of her bra fell off her and Sonny felt his cock twitching in his pants.
Sonny instantly stepped over to Sandra and grabbed her waist with one hand, pulling his new bride over to him.
Sandra’s face was flushed scarlet with blush, more than turned on by Sonny’s possessiveness and she only had her panties inched halfway down her upper thighs.
“Fuck,” Sonny inhaled sharply as his hands roamed up Sandra’s chest, squeezing her full breasts and letting his fingertips brush against her nipples.
“Sonny,” Sandra let out a soft moan, tugging on her husband’s dress shirt.
“Take this shit off.” Sonny yanked so harshly over the fabric of Sonny’s panties that they almost tore. “And get on the bed, baby.”
Sandra didn’t need to be told twice. All it took was a swift tug downward and she stepped out of her panties, excitedly crawling onto the bed.
Sonny enjoyed every second of watching his naked wife get on their new bed for the first time, laying down on her back and watching Sonny strip in front of her.
“Shit,” Sonny hissed as he finally freed his erection out of his trousers.
It took only a mere few moments for Sonny to throw off and wrinkle his suit in the process, but from where Sandra was laying down, she couldn’t make out every full detail of Sonny from the shadow being cast over him.
It was only when Sonny kneeled down on the bed and began to approach his wife that Sandra gasped, stifling a scream as she clasped a hand over her mouth. “Oh my God.”
“What?” Sonny blinked, suddenly confused.
“Santino!” Sandra whined, unable to believe her eyes as she shyly gestured to the size of Sonny’s cock.
Flaccid, Sonny was already five inches but now fully erect in front of Sandra and hornier than ever, Sonny was boasting a solid ten inches—throbbing and begging to be inside of Sandra.
Sonny chuckled and placed his hands over Sandra’s warm, smooth thighs. “S’okay baby, I won’t hurt you.”
“God…” Sandra breathed out; she felt her pussy throbbing at the sight of Sonny’s length but the reality was she had no idea how she was going to take in all of that inside of her.
“Think I wouldn’t come prepared?” Sonny licked the palm of his hand sloppily, beginning to rub it over Sandra’s pussy.
“C-can’t fit all of that in,” Sandra bit down on her lip and obediently spread her legs further.
“I know you can, baby. One inch at a time…” Sonny smirked and cupped his hands under Sandra’s thighs before bringing his head downward. “I’ll get you nice and ready for me.”
“Then…” Sandra curled her toes, tugging over Sonny’s curly hair and bringing him down to her pussy; filled with anticipation, excitement and pulsating arousal. “Show me.”

ELLIS IN FREEDOMLAND
Spring 1952
Directed by Abby Berlin Produced by Roland D. Reed Written by Arthur Hoerl Music by Albert Colombo Choreography by Alex Romero
Synopsis ~ A 82 minute, technicolor promotional film for salesmen of Westinghouse appliances, featuring the voices of major Hollywood celebrities. Westinghouse claims its electric appliances "freed women from the drudgery of housework." The first half involves dream salesman Ellis at work; the second focuses on the "Spring Sales Event," called "Freedomland."
Westinghouse Electric Corporation was founded on January 8, 1886 by George Westinghouse (1846–1914). The corporation purchased CBS in 1995.
Live Cast
Robert Rockwell (Ellis Homan) is probably best remembered as biology teacher Mr. Boynton on the Desilu series “Our Miss Brooks” (1952-56). Although not the first to play Mr. Boynton, he assumed the role on radio and made the transition with the show to television. He played Viv’s handsome match in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (TLS S1;E2) the second installment of “The Lucy Show” in 1962. He then played night school teacher Jack Scott in “The Not-So-Popular Mechanics” (HL S5;E23). He continued working until 1995 and died in 2003 at age 82.
Robert Carson (Phil Pryor, Westinghouse Representative) was a busy Canadian-born character actor who appeared on six episodes of “The Lucy Show” and made five appearance on “Here’s Lucy.”
Byron Foulger (Andy, Night Watchman) played the leader of the Friends of the Friendless in “Lucy’s Last Birthday” (ILL S2;E25). He appeared on “The Lucy Show” in “My Fair Lucy” (TLS S3;E20) and “Lucy Meets the Law” (TLS S5;E19).
Ann O'Neal (Customer in Mink) appeared in more than 100 films in the 1940s including the Lucille Ball film Lover Come Back (1946).
Betty Furness (Herself, Spokeswoman for Westinghouse) was an actress and model who became the face and voice of Westinghouse in many television commercials. When “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” was sponsored by Westinghouse, Furness appeared with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in commercials for their products.
The Starlighters (Vocals) was a singing group that performed mainly as backing vocalists, frequently backing Jo Stafford as well as many other artists on a number of singles. They also performed songs in cartoon and live short films and the feature films Song of Idaho (1948) and With a Song in My Heart (1952).
Voice Cast
Lucille Ball (Lina the Laundromat) was then filming the second half of her first season of “I Love Lucy” playing Lucy Ricardo, although her voice alone was familiar to radio audiences as Liz Cooper in “My Favorite Husband.”
Edward Arnold (Speedy the Range) lends his deep baritone voice to the role. He appeared with Lucille Ball in Roman Scandals (1933) and Ziegfeld Follies (1945). He died in 1956.
James Mason (Frosty the Refrigerator) was a three time Oscar-nominee who appeared as Lucille Ball’s Angel in Forever Darling (1956).
Percy Kilbride (Drip the Dehumidifier) was best remembered as Pa Kettle in a series of films from 1947 to 1954.
Jerry Colonna (Chop-Along Waste-Away the Garbage Disposal) was a comic sidekick of Bob Hope on radio and television. In 1966 he played Smithers, Lucille Ball’s chauffeur on “Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies”.
Andy Devine (Lanky the Water Heater) brought his high-pitched raspy voice to the film. He was known for his many appearances in westerns on both the small and big screen.
Marie Wilson (Dinah the Dryer) is best known for playing the title role in the film and television series “My Friend Irma”. Later in 1952, Wilson and Lucille Ball were both part of “Stars in the Eye” celebrating the opening of CBS Television Center. Coincidentally, Gale Gordon’s mother Gloria was also in “My Friend Irma” and on “The Lucy Show” Mr. Mooney’s off-screen wife was named Irma in her honor.
Maureen O'Sullivan (Pearly the Dishwasher) played Jane in the early Tarzan films. Her career lasted from 1930 to 1994. In 1987, Lucille Ball and O’Sullivan were two of the many stars in “Happy 100th Birthday, Hollywood”.
Mannequins
Jack Mulhall appeared with Lucille Ball in Broadway Bill (1934).
Alan Hale Jr. (Hunter) will forever be remembered as the Skipper on “Gilligan’s Island” but also appeared with Lucille Ball on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy”.
Iron Eyes Cody (Chief Running Water) made a career of playing Native American characters despite the fact that he was of Italian ancestry. He first worked with Lucy and Desi in 1940’s Too Many Girls and 1942’s Valley of the Sun both as an Indian character. He played an Eskimo in a 1959 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” but is probably best remembered as the Indian that sheds a single tear in the ‘Keep America Beautiful’ ads that ran from 1971 to the 1980s. He played a Navajo Medicine Man in “Lucy and the Indian Chief” (HL S2;E3).
Willie Best (Chauffeur) was one of the most popular African-American actors of Hollywood's Golden Era. He starred alongside some of film's great comedians including the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, Laurel and Hardy, and three films with Shirley Temple. He did one film with Lucille Ball: Muss ‘em Up (1936).
Karen Sharpe appeared on the “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” in 1959.
Mickey Simpson appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1939 film Panama Lady.
Anthony Sydes (Bobby, the Boy in Buster Brown Outfit) was 8 years old at the time of filming. He left the business in 1958 and died in 2015 at age 74.
With...
Lisa Abbott, Mildred Coles, Richard Crane, Nancy Hadley, Noreen Michaels, Crystal Reeves, Darla Ridgeway, Anne Rubin, Carol Lowe, Frances Zucco
Uncredited Cast
Ralph Brooks (Stove Demonstrator) appeared in four films with Lucille Ball, as well as “The Lucy-Desi Milton Berle Special” and “Lucy Goes to Las Vegas” (TLS S3;E17).
Sam Harris (Showroom Guest) did a dozen films with Lucille Ball before appearing in the audience of Over the Teacups in “Ethel’s Birthday” (ILL S4;E8) and playing a subway passenger in “Lucy and the Loving Cup” (ILL S6;E12). In between, he was a wedding guest in Lucy and Desi’s film Forever Darling (1956). Along with Monty O'Grady and Murray Pollack, he was in the airport when “The Ricardos Go to Japan” in 1959.
Stuart Holmes (Showroom Guest) appeared with Lucille Ball in Lover Come Back (1946) and Critic’s Choice (1963).
Hans Moebus (Washer / Dryer Demonstrator) appeared as an uncredited background performer in hundreds of movies and TV shows, including the Lucille Ball films DuBarry Was a Lady (1943), A Woman of Distinction (1950) and The Facts of Life (1960). He was seen on the dock during the “I Love Lucy” episode “Bon Voyage” (ILL S5;E13) and part of the riverboat chorus in “Lucy Meets Arthur Godfrey” (TLS S3;E23).
Charles Sherlock (Television Viewer) appeared in three feature films with Lucille Ball from 1935 to 1963.
PART ONE - DON’T MEET COMPETITION, MAKE IT!
Westinghouse Rep Phil Pryer meets salesman Ellis Homan at his office on the department store showroom. Ellis tells Phil about the time he dozed off at his desk and the mannequins came to life: menswear, formal wear, beach wear, and (inexplicably) an American Indian in full regalia. Frosty the Refrigerator (James Mason) gets Ellis’ attention to demonstrate his frost-free features, as well as his unique butter tray and meat keeper.
Ellis then has a conversation with Speedy the Electric Range (Edward Arnold) about all its features. Ellis even makes coffee and cookies for Mabel, a mannequin standing in for a ‘prospect’.
MABEL: “Ellis, you’re cute. I wish you were a dummy.”
Ellis then has a chat with Pearly the Dishwasher (Maureen OSullivan) and Chop-Along Waste-Away the Garbage Disposal (Jerry Colonna), who sings during his demonstration.
Lanky the Water Heater (Andy Devine) is upset because no one pays him much attention. Pearly draws Ellis’s attention to the drip who has shown up in the showroom lately, the Dehumidifier (Percy Kilbride) who promises to rid homes of damaging dampness.
Chiming in (literally) Lina the Laundromat (Lucille Ball) and Dinah the Dryer (Marie Wilson) sing their greeting. Known as ‘The Westinghouse Twins’, they often finish each others’ sentences and speak at the same time - all in aid of showing that they are a perfect freedom-fighting duo in a home. Ellis demonstrates a typical wash cycle.
PART TWO - FREEDOM FAIR
Back in the present, Phil tells Ellis that Westinghouse is sponsoring radio and television coverage of the summer’s 1952 Republican and Democratic conventions, with ‘Get Out the Vote’ programs to follow. In the meantime, Phil tells Ellis about the big Spring Selling Event - Freedom Fair. The event will be rolled out in the April 11, 1952 issue of Life Magazine and the April 16, 1952 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. On television, it will be announced by Betty Furness on “Studio One”.
After Phil leaves, the scene changes to a typical suburban couple’s bedroom where the morning alarm has just gone off. The bedraggled housewife dances through the home trying to get ready for the day ahead - despite the fact that she does not have any time-saving Westinghouse electric appliances. As the harried husband downs a quick cup of coffee and dashes off to work, the song begins (with offscreen vocals by the Starlighters) and the frustrated housewife realizes just how much work she has ahead of her to clean her home. Just then an ethereal voice sings the name “Westinghouse! Westinghouse!” and there is suddenly a handsome young salesman ringing her doorbell. He sings:
“They say that Lincoln freed the slaves, With that I disagree. Women have been slaves for years Till Westinghouse set them free!”
He whisks her away to ‘Westinghousewives’ Heaven’ where all the products we previously saw demonstrated are extolled in joyous song, some even have angel wings! The housewife (still in her curlers and pajamas) ducks behind a cloud and is suddenly revealed in a diaphanous white gown complete with apron! Amid a large group of ballet dancers, the Westinghousewife and Salesman dance in blissful happiness.
At the last moment the Starlighters appear and sing to us about Westinghouse, while the dancers swirl merrily around the May Pole!
Stereotypes
This film is obviously aimed at a male sales force. All the ‘prospects’ are assumed to be female and referred to in such terms as “the little lady”. The female mannequins are only interested in Ellis as romantic partners. Clearly, housewives were the main target of male salesmen.
The film also presents a stereotypical black chauffeur, the only person of color in the cast. The actor is asked to pull comical faces that make him appear silly - the source of humor
“Mmmm. There’s gonna be a watermelon missin’, ‘round here.”
Needless to say, that an American Indian chasing a scantily clad Caucasian woman around the store plays on stereotypical images of predatory Native Americans. The actor playing the Chief is Iron Eyes Cody, who, despite his name, was born Espera Oscar de Corti, an Italian-American. When trying to communicate all he says is “Ugg!”
Homosexuals don’t escape either. A man with an effeminate manner and lisping voice wearing a coonskin cap swishes in to say “Hello, Fellas” with a toss of the raccoon tail he swans off. The two men in suits look uncomfortable and deny knowing him.
Voice casting reflects gender stereotypes of the time. Cooling and heating appliances are voiced by men while washing appliances are voiced by women.
Trivia
Lucille Ball’s participation in this film may have influenced or been influenced by the fact that for the first season of “I Love Lucy” Lucy Ricardo had a 1951 Westinghouse Frost-Free refrigerator in her kitchen - very similar to “Frosty” - the model shown here in the film. It was widely promoted in print publications and on TV during 1951. Previously, the freezer cabinet had to be thawed manually when frost and ice built up in and around it.
LUCY: “Didn’t you watch the conventions on television?”
Phil tells Ellis that Westinghouse will take out extensive advertising on radio and TV during the Conventions. In July 1952 both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions were televised live from Chicago. Although the conventions were also televised in 1948, few Americans owned a TV set to watch them. This time, an estimated 70 million voters watched the broadcasts, which ended with the nominations of Adlai Stevenson II and Dwight D. Eisenhower. There is a popular myth that Stevenson lost the election because of backlash from interrupting airings of “I Love Lucy” with hour-long campaign ads. Perhaps from Westinghouse? The conventions were mentioned on “I Love Lucy” (appropriately) in “The Club Election” (ILL S2;E19) which aired in February 1953. However, it was filmed in September 1952, when the reference would have been much more timely. By the time it eventually aired, Eisenhower had been inaugurated and the conventions were a distant memory.
Distribution: Who Saw It - The film series reached 25,000 dealers in 75 cities in a single week. Released in Technicolor and in 16mm. Longest of four dealer promotion films in a two-hour series produced to promote Westinghouse home appliances.
The wall calendar above Ellis’s desk matches the calendar for January 1952, which was likely the filming date. The calendar depicts a loaf of bread with the brand name redacted for filming. On the table close to the bottom of the frame are copies of Life Magazine. Later on, Ellis makes instant coffee from a jar labeled Maxwell House Coffee, although the dish washing detergent and the food in the fridge are obviously props with no brand identification. The laundry soap, however, is clearly labelled ‘All’ but is not in their usual bright colored packaging.
Blooper Alerts!
Dates! Phil tells Ellis that Freedom Fair will be announced in the April 11 issue of Life. However, the issue is actually dated April 7, 1952, not April 11. Interestingly, copies of Life Magazine are used as set decoration in Ellis’s office. Similarly, the April 16 edition of the Saturday Evening Post is really dated April 12.
Weather Forecast! The put-upon housewife at the end of the film realizes her wash is still on the line when there is a sudden cloudburst (she does not own an electric dryer). The next moment, she answers the door to the Westinghouse Salesman and it is a clear day. Not really a blooper, just an indication that Westinghouse makes a rainy day into a sunny one - at least in the movies!
Fast Forward!
“Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” was a television anthology series produced by Desilu Productions. The show ran on CBS between 1958 and 1960. Two of its 48 episodes served as pilots for the 1950s television series “The Twilight Zone” and “The Untouchables.” It also presented 11 of the 13 episodes of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” after its initial sponsorship by Ford.
In joining forces with Desilu, Westinghouse canceled their other anthology series “Studio One” which ran on CBS from 1948 to 1958.
To kick off the partnership between Desilu and Westinghouse, a similar film (informally titled “Lucy Buys Westinghouse”) was produced which depicted Lucy and Desi giving a Westinghouse Executive a tour of their studio, formerly RKO. All through the tour, much to the dismay of Desi, Lucy is trying to order appliances for her dressing room from the executive! At the end, Lucy appears inside a Westinghouse dryer - hiding from Desi! Like Ellis in Freedomland, this film was only shown to Westinghouse employees. Unlike Ellis, it was filmed in black and white - only later colorized for home video. Throughout the film, Desi mispronounces the company’s name as “Westin-Gouse” and its spokesperson as Betty “Furnace”.
During that time, the cast often did long-form commercials for Westinghouse. Here, Betty Furness and Vivian Vance join Lucille Ball to talk about the 1959 Westinghouse washing machine, the same type of appliance Ball voiced in this film seven years earlier.
Naturally, during this period Lucy Ricardo had the most up-to-date Westinghouse appliances in her Westport home. Like this two-toned refrigerator and freezer.
Back in New York City, the Ricardos owned a Westinghouse Clock Radio!
The Handy Dandy vacuum cleaner was actually a Westinghouse model!
In 1954, Lucy made breakfast with her Westinghouse "Grill-n-Waffler" Waffle Iron - if only she can remember to pay the electricity bill, that is!
Lucy squeezes oranges for juice with her Westinghouse Model #FM-511 Food Crafter with juicer attachment (sold separately).
Lucy owned two different models of the Westinghouse Commander Super-Corox Range. This 1950 model was used during season one...
...and this 1954 Model on a later season. It looks similar to the 1950 model, but the controls have a different layout.
In 1953, ownership of a washing machine was a point of contention between the Ricardos and Mertzes. The appliance used in the episode is labeled Epernay (a fictional brand). In actuality, it is probably a Launderall Horton 500 with gas stove handles affixed to the sides to help move it back and forth on the narrow porch.
Lucy uses the washing machine (a lot!) in Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). It is impossible to see what brand it is.
Coincidentally, in April 1952, “I Love Lucy” did an episode titled “The Freezer” (ILL S1;E29) where Lucy and Ethel want to buy a home freezer to economize, but end up buying a walk-in model instead. In Jess Oppenheimer’s book, he states that newspapers and magazines were full of ads for home freezers at the time. Once they came up with the idea of Lucy getting trapped in the freezer, they had to abandon the home freezer idea for a larger, walk-in model.
In 1966, a TV musical titled “Evening Primrose” with music by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, also explored the idea of department store mannequins coming to life. Anthony Perkins starred.
The idea of anthropomorphized laundry room appliances was also explored in the 2004 Broadway musical Caroline, or Change, in which actors played embodiment of the Washing Machine and the Dryer. A revival of the musical was on track for Broadway but interrupted by the Corona Virus pandemic.
In 1987, the film Mannequin starring Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall also explored the idea of department store mannequin coming to life. It was partly based on the 1948 film One Touch of Venus, although in that film, the mannequin was a statue.

Travel Blog March: Sri Lanka - Galle and the South Coast
Having fallen in love with the Indian Subcontinent, it seemed remiss of me that despite three different visits which had taken in the diversity of Bhutan, Rajasthan and Nepal, I hadn’t been further south than Jaipur. So, imagine my delight when my soon to be husband announced on my 38th birthday that maybe my 40th should be in Sri Lanka. How life can change in two years! Two weddings – to the same man I hasten to add - and one pregnancy later and we’re fast approaching that 40 milestone. A nearly 1-year old boy didn’t feature in the original plan, understandably. However, having so bought into enjoying my 40th in Sri Lanka, I was having more than a smidgen of trouble seeing beyond that initial idea when we were looking at other options. Then I read a blog (aren’t blogs great?!). The blog was by a lady who was in the middle of taking her two under-fives travelling around the world with her partner. For the life of me I can’t remember her name, but what an inspiration. And then a lightbulb moment – why can’t I do this? And once I was in the mindset of a baby being mobile and being able to take it all with us, then a world of options appeared. I have to say my husband took some convincing - and we were wise not to tell wider family and grandparents until closer the time - but once I had put a plan together and he saw where we were staying, he was fully on board.
However, whilst the destination was still Sri Lanka, the actual make-up of the holiday was completely different to what we’d first envisaged. Gone were the multi-destination itineraries to be replaced by a one centre base; the intimate boutique hotels and hostels were replaced by a larger more international style hotel; and the tours of cultural centres replaced with ideas of trips out to see elephants and maybe the odd local site. After much searching, our destination was Galle, at a hotel called The Fortress just outside Koggala in the south west of the island. We could not recommend it enough, but more on that in a moment
So how did we do it? Well, it was a two-week break, and we flew Qatar Airways via Doha. The beauty of a scheduled flight was the amount of luggage we could take, albeit limited still to two cases and two sets of hand-luggage; the weight restriction was less onerous that you usually find. Not wanting to rely on being able to buy baby essentials when we were there, we packed all the nappies, wipes and baby milk we’d need. We went old school with the sterilising thanks to tips from a friend who had to have some ingenious workarounds when she went camping, so out went the microwave or electric sterilisers and in came a large Tupperware lidded container (of the size to hold 4 bottles at a time) and Milton tablets. Everything in boxes or tubs was decanted into plastic bags, and we took the minimum of clothes and more travel wash powder that we'd normally take. Suffice to say, one and a half suitcases were filled with baby stuff. Even though we stripped back to the essentials, we still felt we needed a good first aid kit; a rubber ring for the pool; and a UV-pod tent for additional shade when playing by the pool (this folds flat in the bottom of a case). Between myself and my husband we managed on 2 evening outfits and 3 day-outfits each; two pairs of shoes each, undergarments and swimwear. It certainly made daily outfit decisions so much easier.
What helped? Well, Top 5 would be
1. Taking our main buggy - our Uppababy Vista. We had thought of taking something smaller and we’re so glad we didn’t. Its light anyway, but it gave us extra space and a space our son was happy sleeping in when we walked him around during the day or had it next to us at mealtimes. It also has great sunshades built in and a good net too. Plus, the large carrier at the bottom meant we could carry around all we needed easily. It was also useful in the airport too, and we were able to have it until we boarded.
2. Organising our hand luggage. We used 2 Cabin Zero rucksacks and had one for us, and the other for baby things. In the baby bag were everything we would need for 24 hours for him, and each was compartmentalised into different bags/Tupperware, so we could easily get to them. Spare clothes and a blanket were put in Ikea travel pouches; Toys were isolated into handing ikea travel pouches. We ensured we had enough nibble food and formula milk for the journey - all a matter of opinion, but we found formula milk the easiest way.
3. Make everything multiuse wherever possible. For example, when it came to changing mats and changing bags, we used a SkipHop pronto changing station bag, which held nappies, wipes, cream and bags, but also folded out to a mat and when rolled up, had a handle to go over your wrist to carry.A useful piece of kit. You could put spare clothes through it too if needed.
4. Timing of bottles. The airline was a great help already with the flight as they ensured we had little waiting time – either boarding or on flight change at Doha – and they gave us bulk-head seats, so we could have a cot for our son for the journey. To make the noisier parts of the flight easier we also timed each take-off and descent to coincide with a bottle. This helped our son clear his ears and distract him. We used ready-made formula milk which comes in cartons and can be taken on flights albeit declared at security and scanned. This meant we weren’t having to use the water on the plane
5. Muji Apron. This may sound odd, but I found my Muji cross back apron to be a godsend when travelling I put it on at the gate and filled the deep pockets with the essentials for the first hour or so leaving my hands free. It was useful on the plane and when we were disembarking just to shove things into. All in all, a godsend and also the added benefit that my clothes were relatively clean when we arrived.
There were also a handful of items that we took with us that in hindsight, we were really glad to have with us. We’ve mentioned the UVpod/tent – amazing for our crawling son and space for him to play in, out of the full glare of the sun. A travel belt was something I hadn’t thought of, but a friend has said to take hers just in case the car-seat wasn’t up to scratch – it wasn’t, and I felt a lot better with our son strapped to me for the car journeys. Simple plastic cups – the stackable sort which we’d usually just use in the bath were great for the beach, for simple play and in the shallows of the pool and were light and easy to have with us and the toy used the most all trip.
Hotel
The hotel was The Fortress, located just outside Galle and about a 2-hour transfer from the airport. A luxurious hotel with large rooms – ours opened out to the garden.
Highlights?
The hotel also had a turtle sanctuary, so we could go and see the hatched turtles, and also watch as they were released early evening on the beach. The pool was a decent size and had shallow steps and slopes to get in so was a great place for us to sit with our son and just splash; and there were plenty of loungers to sit by the pool. The views out to the ocean (you’re next to the beach) were phenomenal every day. The food was superb, and the staff were outstanding and could not do enough for us.
A brief extra mention on the staff and the food. The hotel could not do enough for us. Every day they would ask about food for our son, and what we might like for them to make. They arranged for an elephant to be brought to the hotel, so we had an elephant experience (there turned out to be no sanctuaries nearby that were close enough to visit), and also arranged a brief private trip of Galle and Galle Fort so we could see some sights. As it as our son’s birthday on the day we were leaving, they made him a celebration cake and decorated the bed with his name in flowers. He was truly spoilt. In terms of the food – we could not fault the hotel at all. Whilst we enjoyed all the meals, the breakfasts were for me the most amazing in terms of quality, freshness and diversity. We still picture our son in his marble-like high chair shoving the delicious fruits and breads into his mouth whilst being the centre of attention for any of the servicing staff as they passed.
We went mid-March and the weather was dry and warm – certainly swimsuit weather! We flew Qatar Airways from Manchester to Colombo via Doha, and stayed at The Fortress (www.fortressresortandspa.com).

Sri Lanka newlyweds cancel wedding party, help poor instead
COLOMBO — As couples do all over the world, Darshana Kumara Wijenarayana and his fiance, Pawani Rasanga, spent months planning a grand wedding.
And everything was on course for the Sri Lankan couple — until the coronavirus struck the island nation off India’s southern tip, leading to an indefinite lockdown.
“By that time, we had made all the arrangements. Clothes, rings and cakes had been…

Bali and New Zealand Day 28
So this morning we checked out the motel. That was an experience. We we're in a block of three rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen. Only one other couple staying and we were told would be nice and quiet!!
Sounded like one if them had some sort of condition as they opened and shut their door countless times.
The note in kitchen says wash and put away dishes as soon as used them. We came back after going to an amazing Indian (The Himalayan on Colombo St) to a bomb site. Cooker had baked bean juice everywhere and dishes and pans left. We wouldn't have been able to use kitchen if we wanted to!
Following morning it was all still their. Checkout was by 10. The girl was still in pjS ramming all their stuff into a skip, I mean car and he was making toast!!
Each to their own.
I then headed to Macpac to get my jacket which I'm chuffed with and as had sale on, also picked up a couple of shirts and a bag for putting muddy boots in. Bag was £15, now £2.50 😎
Next stop 'The Old Vicarage' in Haswell to have coffee and catch up with Zoe. Lovely location and warm and sunny in the garden. Great Two hours catching up on last few years since our last visit.
We were told Craig (Zoe's husband) was disappointed we didn't stay with them. It was nothing personal but as we said, we didn't want to feel like we only get in touch when we want somewhere to stay. That's obviously not the case! Craig was finishing off their swimming pool so Heidi joked to tell him we wouldn't stay until it's finished and ready for use!!
Best of luck for the wedding in a few weeks ( Zoe's eldest getting married 😎).
Onwards for a look at Mount Sunday. This is a Lord of the Rings film location used for the village of Edoras, the capital of Rohan. The set took 9 months to build apparently. I have never seen any of the films as like fact rather than fiction but as most of their film locations are scenic, went to have a look.
Stopped at the village of Mount Somers on the way for chocolate and a drink. Good job I checked directions as I got the two confused and was heading for Mount Somers. Luckily Sunday was further down the same road, a lot further!!
The tarmac Rd gave way to a gravel road and went on for quite a few miles. The scenery was amazing and I saw more birds, a knocked down Wallaby and some Hares.
Once on site. I quick marched up and down the Mount as we had to be at friends. It was real windy on top and as didn't wear hat, my ears were burning with the wind chill. My tracker told me I was king of the mountain!! (The quickest walker their and back!!), Sign says 45 min each way, I did return in 41. Better to take longer but I was on a schedule.
Returned down the gravel road and back to tarmac. The roads are real quiet and sometimes feels weird when being followed by big truck in the distance. It reminds me of the film Duel where a car driver is hounded for miles by a truck but you never see the driver of the truck!
Next destination was Tamuka to see our friends Sue and Clint . We arrived at about 1830, chatted , ate and drank until I think it was 0115!!
Looking forward to staying here and going out with them the next day. 😎

Colombo, Sri Lanka South Asian Wedding by 1Plus1 Studio
We’re back with all of Christine and Kumara’s wedding deets from Colombo, Sri Lanka! Before the ceremony began, the couple were gussied up in their wedding finery. Maharani Christine was a showstopper in an ethereal, tulle gown with angelic hair and makeup by Dil Sapukotanage. After the couple's emotional first look, they posed for some glamorous portraits by a sleek, vintage automobile. Their love in these stunning photos positively bursts off the screen. As we entered the magnificent St. Theresa's Church, we could feel the utter romance and serenity that filled the air. The supporting cast at this wedding were adorable as well, from the gorg bridesmaids in pale pink column gowns, to the precious (and excited!) flower girls and ring bearers. The photographers at 1Plus1 Studio captured the whimsy and beauty of the event perfectly, and you can enjoy all the photos in the full gallery. We’re so happy for the couple, their family, and the planners from Weddings by Sonali for pulling off such a perfect event. Next, we'll take you into all the glamorous reception action, so stay tuned! http://dlvr.it/Pytl7M

Food Photography Didn’t Start on Instagram—Here’s Its 170-Year History
William Henry Fox Talbot, A Fruit Piece, 1845. Image via Wikimedia Commons.
We have Instagram to thank (or, perhaps, blame) for the proliferation of avocado toast today. But it was another, much earlier development in food photography that introduced us to the avocado in the first place.
In the 1940s, brands like Crisco and Aunt Jemima began to produce “cookbooklets”—free, promotional pamphlets that contained recipes accompanied by vivid photographs touting their products. “In lots of ways, they changed the way, especially in America, that people ate,” explains Susan Bright, author of the recently published book Feast for the Eyes. “Things like avocados and orange juice really became household objects through these cookbooklets.”
Bright’s book, which explores the history of food in photography, reveals that the subjects have been intertwined for nearly two centuries—almost since the birth of photography itself. The medium was introduced to the general public in 1839 with the unveiling of the daguerrotype. Six years later, William Henry Fox Talbot took one of the first photographs with food as its primary subject: a still life containing baskets of peaches and a pineapple.

During those days, food photography was heavily influenced by still life paintings. Many images featured fruit, playing off traditional symbolism: grapes for excess or peaches for fertility.
Since cookbooks generally lacked illustrations and advertising was still in its infancy, food photography in the 19th century was, by default, viewed through an artistic lens. At the turn of the 20th century, innovators like Paul Strand began to draw away from the conventions of traditional still lifes. Instead, Strand drew visual cues from the Modernist painters of the time, including Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso.
A decade later, in 1927, Edward Steichen further divorced food photography from its associations with painterly tradition. Commissioned by the Stehli Silk Corporation to produce a pattern for its American scarf series, he arranged sugar cubes in neat rows and lit them from behind to create a cross-hatched shadow. “It’s really about shape and form and shadow,” Bright notes. “It loses all that natural connotation and it becomes about dynamism and design.”
Nickolas Muray, Lemonade and Fruit Salad, McCall’s magazine, ca. 1943; Image from Feast for the Eyes (Aperture, 2017) Courtesy of Aperture © Nickolas Muray Photo Archives, Courtesy of George Eastman Museum, gift of Mrs. Nickolas Muray.
With the introduction of color advertising in the mid-1930s, styles began to shift. No longer was food photography solely a fine art—now, images were there to sell. This was the era of the cookbooklets, each with three to four pages of technicolor photography.
The work of Nickolas Muray, a Hungarian-born photographer hired by popular women’s magazine McCall’s, elaborates on these brightly colored spreads. “His photographs were extraordinary,” says Bright. “They were these great, laden tables—which we can then see influencing these epic Betty Crocker feasts, which make no sense as meals. It’s like Thanksgiving on acid.”
To keep up appearances under the hard, direct lighting required to get such vivid colors, food was hair-sprayed or even varnished. Beer foam was replaced by soap bubbles, and glue took the place of cereal milk. And, of course, none of it was edible.
Peter Fischili and Davis Weiss, Fashion Show, 1979; from Wurst Series. Image from Feast for the Eyes (Aperture, 2017). Courtesy of Aperture.
It wasn’t until the 1990s that there was “a real gear shift” in commercial food photography for both magazines and cookbooks, says Bright. Naturalistic, documentary styles began to replace the theatrical, overflowing place settings of previous decades. Food began to look edible again.
One of the pioneers of this new style was the 1990s cookbook White Heat, featuring photographs by Bob Carlos Clarke of chef Marco Pierre White. “Very high high French cuisine had never been photographed like this before,” Bright says. Glamour shots of exquisitely made food were traded for documentary-style images of a budding celebrity chef. “There’s this big guy, big like an athlete with long hair, producing these really fussy little meals. And it was sexy. It was all a little bit macho.”
It was a moment, she says, “where cookbooks became more like photobooks.”
Daniel Gordon, Pineapple and Shadow, 2011; Image from Feast for the Eyes (Aperture, 2017). Courtesy of the artist and James Fuentes Gallery, New York.
Beets, 2010. Elad Lassry Phillips
Cookbooks were now approaching the status of art objects, but artists themselves had long been incorporating food in their work. Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss created their “Wurstserie” (German for “Sausage Series”) in 1979, styling sausages and pickles to appear as if they were carpet shopping or attending a fashion show. The same sort of playful, surreal energy can be found in the photographs of Sian Bonnell over two decades later—slices of bologna adorning her kitchen backsplash or a ring of fried eggs encircling her bathroom toilet. Other artists, like Elad Lassry, mine the tropes of commercial food photography for artistic ends.
And then came food blogs and Instagram. “Everyone became more interested in food, and everyone was taking better and better pictures of food,” Bright says, noting that food blogs today often contain a section with information about camera type, settings, and light source. “It’s a real production. So photography books have to respond to that, as do the magazines.”

Michael Zee (@symmetrybreakfast), Sunday: Baked Buttermilk Doughnuts, drizzled with cherry syrup to make them super moist, topped with yoghurt and a single fresh cherub of a cherry, 2017. Image via Instagram.
Instagram accounts, like Michael Zee’s @symmetrybreakfast, have managed to attract hundreds of thousands of followers for their artfully prepared meals. Social media, Bright notes, has breathed new life into the genre.
“It’s no longer the wedding photography of photography practice,” she laughs. “Food used to be really way down there. It’s kind of sexy in a way that fashion is sexy. It’s having a moment.”
