Steven Moffat insists that the inclusion of the Dalek in 'The Wedding of River Song' was not a deliberate in-joke.

Prior to the series airing, he stated that the for would not appear, as he felt they were "overused" and needed a rest.

According to Moffat, the cameo was not an intentional joke, but rather a spur of the moment idea "that just worked".

However, the "oldest question" being "hidden in plain sight" WAS an in-joke i.e. it is literally the title of the show, and thus hiding in plain sight.

You know, The Doctor's ego is such a fascinating part of their character. Because they act like it's massive, and to a certain extent it is. But they also have such low self-esteem under it all. Like they have a genuine fundamental belief that their life doesn't matter beyond the usefulness they find for themselves in helping others. They are always willing to lay down their life for pretty much any cause, and they have a fundamental belief that nobody will care.

For example, take The Wedding of River Song, River nearly destroyed the universe to tell the Doctor that the universe cared about him, and he still didn't believe it. Instead the lesson he took from that was that he had too much of an impact and needed to be forgotten. He literally began to delete himself and let the universe believe he had died, because he thought it was a bad thing that he was valued (yes, there were negative consequences to it, namely the Silence, but they still ended up happening and there was a massive negative consequence to the Daleks forgetting him, if you listen to the Eleventh Doctor Chronicles audios)

Another example is the audio Find and Replace, where the 3rd Doctor tried to replace himself in Jo's memory with Iris Wildthyme, because he thought she wouldn't mind, and it would be safer for her. And he didn't believe she would have any objections to that because he didn't believe that he had actually mattered to her.

There's also the stuff with the Time War, and the Doctor's belief that they aren't actually the Doctor, that it is an ideal they strive for but will never reach because they consider themselves to be a bad person, and that the War Doctor was their true self, a terrible monster, rather than what he actually was, a good man forced to do terrible things by inescapable circumstances.

River Song calls herself a psychopath. Fans say, "no she's not, she has empathy."

And in most cases, yes, she does care about other people. But in "The Wedding of River Song" she honestly, genuinely, believes that the total of the universe would hurt less than she would hurt, for killing a man she only met once before. Objectively, she gets how irrational that is. But subjectively, she still believes it, because she loves him that much.

That's why she thinks she's a psychopath.

11th doctors era drives me actuallt crazy every time I think about it and Matt Smith played him so well 😞 his relationship with amy and his relationship with clara and river song being the love of his life and the way he keeps trying to hide everything he's feeling and the anger and the pain from the time war and he tries to cover it up with this funny goofy facade but everyone can see through him no matter how hard he tries. The fact he barely cries and when he does he tries to hide it or act like its this weird unnatural thing for him. The scene where amy and rory say they always set a place for him at dinner during Christmas time and he cries of happiness and the look of confusion on his face gets me EVERY fucking time
