Social media comparison

Alright. I've tried different new/alternative platforms lately in hope to find something I really liked, and there are very promising ones. I didn't try everything, of course, but this is a kind of overview of my journey so far? Or just my thoughts on the matter.

I've tried Pillowfort, Bluesky, Mastodon (didn't last long enough to have much of an opinion, it simply didn't click), Dreamwidth and Cohost (as of today, can't post there yet).

My comparison under the cut:

► I appreciate that they're algorithm free, whether it's because they truly believe in an Internet rid of the most invasive of them or because it's too expensive to implement on a brand new platform or some other reason. Only the future can tell, but for now it's nice.

► Pillowfort: beside the post formatting that I find extremely comfortable, my favourite thing is probably communities. I feel like this is the strongest "pro" in favor of Pillowfort because this is where they truly distinguish themselves from other social media.

Communities, in a way, remind me of forums. They're however easier to take in hand since you don't have to deal with as many options and choices. In my opinion, communities on Pillowfort are a bit lacking in functionalities though. I think more tools to easily organize them would help, like a widget or something to link stuff so you can create and animate events within said communities.

(I also feel like Pillowfort would gain from not being dark blue. We have more than enough dark blue websites, and it doesn't go well with the warmth invoked by its name in my opinion, but that's a minor detail and just a matter of taste.)

► Bluesky: basically Twitter but better. No algorithm, for a start. The curated feeds are nice. They're a bit like communities on Pillowfort since they can be moderated but from a non-mod user, it's even easier to post in them: you just have to use the right keyword for your post to appear there. Well, if the mod left it open to all rather than chose to vet who can or cannot post in it. Lots of flexibility and control over your timeline overall.

I don't like the 300 characters limit, however. Never liked it with Twitter either. It's not really conductive to conversations, and the general design tends to make the website feel rather impersonal. It's really more like parallel talking than community building.

Overall I think it's a good tool to promote your (visual) art or website, etc. but not great for hosting conversations past commenting briefly what others are doing. I mean, you can make threads but it'll never be as good as Pillowfort or Tumblr for this.

► Dreamwidth: I'll start with saying that Dreamwidth isn't a social media, it's a journaling platform and I haven't used it much yet. Had in plan to post my headcanons about my muses there and stuff like that so I did spend some time trying to figure out how it works.

First, there is a lot of options to let you have complete control over who can see what. Like, a lot.

You can entirely personalize what your journal will look like. It's a bit easier than having your own website—since I reblogged a post about that yesterday—because you don't start from 0, so it might be a good option if you don't feel comfortable jumping into Notepad++ to start coding. You can just change a thing here and there, or nothing at all, or almost everything. It's pretty old school though, so for those completely unfamiliar with early/pre-web 2.0, it might not look very appealing at first. However, I'd say don't let that stop you! If anything, it's a good opportunity to learn a bit of code without pressure.

You can also create communities, which as you might have guessed is very important to me. When creating one, you can set up whether everyone can join, everyone can ask to join but has to be approved by a community admin or to limit the access to those you have personally invited. Like for your own journal, communities are completely customizable, and Dreamwidth allows adult content.

I'm not sure you can top DW communities in terms of functionalities—aside from making a forum—but it's not as intuitive as Pillowfort (though in exchange you get more customization). You're also more limited regarding image hosting (see here). That said, hosting services exist, many are free, and that's without mentioning that you can post on Twitter and the like and use the picture link in your DW posts. I don't think many will only use Dreamwidth anyway.

► Cohost: I was expecting nothing when I registered earlier today, but this is an overall good surprise: it's Tumblr, but better.

More control of what you see. More user-friendly UI. It's not fucking blue. Adult content allowed. You can change your main blog page and make it private.

The only two downsides I'd mention here would be that you can't customize your blog page appearance and you have to wait for one or two days before being able to post. Although if it means less bots, I'd rather wait.

Why I Contributed to FujoGuide

If you follow me here or mastodon you may have noticed that I've been reblogging/boosting a lot of posts for something called The Fujoshi Guide to Web Development (@fujowebdev). There's a good chance you followed me or know me from the Dragon Age fandom where I run communities, events, and zines and write fanfic, and you might be wondering why the sudden and drastic departure from my normal content. Why would a writer contribute to something related to webdev? Why have you stopped seeing thirst for Dragon Age characters and started seeing… whatever a FujoGuide is?

My Coding Journey

I wrote my first lines of code in 1996 (yes, I'm old AF). It was the early days of the internet and tutorials for how to make your own websites were literally everywhere. You couldn't go more than two clicks without finding a how-to written in plain language. But it was painstaking and tedious. CSS didn't exist yet (literally, I started coding about six months before it was released) and even when it appeared it wasn't widely adopted or supported.

It was the "glory days" of Geocities, Myspace themes, Neopets, and Livejournal. If there was a cool site, you could use HTML and/or CSS to customize it. I honed my skills by coding so many tables character profiles for RPs, creating themes, painstakingly laying out user info pages, and building my own site.

Gradually, things changed. Web 2.0 showed up with locked down profiles and feeds you couldn't customize, free website hosts became more difficult to find, and point and click page builders became the way of the web. Shortly after, I took a long break from fandom; frustrated and disappointed with site closures, lost communities, and general fandom wank… it felt like it just wasn't worth it anymore.

I eventually came back, and when I did it meant customizing themes, figuring out how to create tools for my communities, coding tumblr pages (and learning they're not really supported on mobile), and looking at automations for my common tasks. One day, I woke up and thought, "I'm going to make a Discord bot… it can't be that hard."

So, I did it.

An Unexpected Friendship

About a month after I launched my bot to the public, I received a random Discord message from @essential-randomness. A friend had told her about my bot, and she was working on BobaBoard which needed volunteers. I was shocked. First, people were talking about my bot. Second, I wasn't a real coder. I didn't know anything! I just googled a bunch of stuff and got something working. I had no idea what I was doing.

She assured me it was okay. She was willing to teach me what I didn't know - and most of all, that she wanted my help. I took a day or two to think it over, and fatefully filled out the volunteer form. I didn't know if I could be useful or how I could be useful, but I wanted to try.

Programming Is Awful

In the years months that followed, I spent a lot of time in @essential-randomness' DMs complaining about programming… at least once I realized she wouldn't judge me. I was still very much doing things the hard way, taking hours to update a site to add a single link on all the pages. I knew there were easier methods, but I either couldn't find them or once I found them, they were filled with dense jargon which was terrifying.

"An all-in-one zero-javascript frontend architecture framework!" Is that even English? "A headless open-source CMS." Cool. Sounds good. "A full-stack SSG based on Jamstack extending React and integrating Rust-based JS." Those sure are words. With meanings. That someone knows. Not me, though.

I spent so much time looking at what sites claimed was documentation and losing my mind because I had no idea where to even start most of the time. With @essential-randomness' encouragement, I kept at it, experimenting with new things, and jumping in headfirst even when I had no idea what I was doing. And I was so glad. Where I used to struggle keeping one website updated, last year I managed to deploy and update 7 websites. Yeah, you read that right. It was amazing.

The new stuff made it all much, much easier.

An Idea Is Born

Meanwhile, we spent hours discussing why it was difficult to get fandom to try coding. Part of the barrier was the belief you must be some sort of genius or know math or that creative/humanities people can't do it. It is also partially coding communities being unfriendly to newbies and hobbyists; a culture which often thrives on debasing people's choices, deriding them for not understanding, and shouting rtfm (read the fucking manual) and lmgtfy (let me google that for you)- all of which are unhelpful at best and humiliating and abusive at worst. The tech dudebro culture can be unforgiving and mean.

The number of coding-based Discords I've left far outnumbers the ones I've stayed in.

We determined what fandom needed was a place for coders of all skill levels to come together to help and support one another; where they could learn to code and how to join open-source projects they love, and where they could make friends and connections and show off their projects whether they were new or experienced programmers.

And thus… Fandom Coders was born.

What About FujoGuide?

Of course, running a coding group and working on BobaBoard together means we spent a lot of time talking about the state of the web. We both lamented over poor documentation, jargon-rich tutorials, and guides which assume a baseline of knowledge most people don't have. What we needed to do was provide tutorials which start at the beginning… from the ground up (what is a terminal and how do I open it?) without skipping steps. What we needed to do was make those tutorials fun and appealing.

I don't remember exactly the journey it took to get us here if I'm honest. I have no clue who said it first. But I do remember I first started thinking about anthropomorphizing programming languages when we attempted to cast the languages as the Ouran High School boys… and again when I suggested we do a [TOP SECRET IN CASE WE DO IT] group project in Fandom Coders to help people learn about programming.

What I do know is that as last year ended, @essential-randomness became laser-focused on creating our gijinka and moving forward with FujoGuide… and I couldn't say no.

Okay, But… Why Contribute?

To be honest, it's not just that I was around for the birth of the idea. It's ALL of the things in this post - the culmination of three years of frustration trying to figure out what I'm doing with coding, of wading through dense documentation, of wanting to give up before I even start. It's three years of dipping my toes into toxic techbro culture before running away. All added to decades of watching the web become corporate-sanitized, frustratingly difficult to customize, increasingly less fun, and overtly hostile to fans who dare enjoy sexual content.

To sum all of this up, it's the firm belief that we desperately need a resource like this. Something that's for us, by us. Something that builds fans up, instead of tears them down; that empowers them to create for themselves and their communities what no one is creating for them. It is a project I'm deeply passionate about.

And I can't wait until we can bring it to life for you all.

as the internet falls to ruin again and the main place i could reliably post my raunchiest shit has is actively falling in on itself, i'm currently performing yet ANOTHER social media overhaul and trying to set up some shit. 1) Finishing this goddamn blog!!!! i never actually FINISHED setting up this page! there's a handful of broken/missing links still left (like a proper link to my commissions page)

2) i'm gonna make a neocities!!! or a personal website!!! or w/e!!!! this one is a lot further down the line, but as i step my toe into more and more "taboo" im gonna have to keep it somewhere that i can trust wont just explode some day. im not 100% sure of what my options are, best case scenario neocities is fine with it and getting a gallery on one is easy, worst case scenario i find some nascent art platform thats very ok with boobs and i shove my shit over there. just know i draw ass very frequently and i have NOWHERE to put it in the meantime.

3) RSS feeds

i've been dragging my goddamn feet on this but eventually i will have some kind of RSS something set up so if people have readers/feeders for that stuff you'll be able to plug my link in and catch my art that way. the more things fall apart with web 2.0 the more i think that the real web 3.0 is going to be a return to p2p connections and federated networks. even discord seems like its got an expiration date for when it'll eventually do something that makes it virtually unusable due to the nature of profit-seeking. as advertisement and degradation of user friendliness keeps up, its just not gonna be tenable to do things like build a following or market your work on existing platforms. that may sound doom and gloom but this is like my third "migration" back and forth between platforms and if this is the new normal then i need to find an alternative for the future.

Time for more notations to keep me focused.

-Animals

Have not done anything with animal husbandry at all, so I will work on dividing the large pen for all the animals into smaller sections in order to better farm (heh) resources.

Dwarves are slowly getting better at training captured animals, especially giant bats which they are now Knowledgeable of. A few facts are known about barn owls, coyotes, dingos, and wolves. On that note, I'm seeing more of these animals in the area now. Used to be kangaroos, but not sure I've seen a notification about one of those in a while. Maybe we hunted them all?

Untrainable animals include my Troll and Gorlak. Will build rooms for them to trap invaders in, once I figure out a good way of doing so.

-Clothing

Clothing generation has become more important as clothes start to wear. Like the rest of Punchsmiths, thread/silk/cloth production is a disorganized mess, including the animals who are all very spread out at this point. I think I will make a separate, close pen for animals that can be sheared.

Leather production would also be cool, but that ties to the animal husbandry thing and raising more animals faster.

Still want to build a spider farm so I can ramp up silk production. Looked it up on the wiki and now I plan to build a room and place a hatch overhead, place a loom next to it and assign some poor schmuck to it with the task of infinitely collecting web. The more complicated part of this plan is freeing all the tamed spiders I have in my possession. Which leads me into...

-Machines

Rock mechanisms! After nearly a decade in-game it's finally time to start working on machines, so I'm starting to crank out mechanisms. I need to figure out linking levers in order to free my caged spiders, but I also am arming the fort with more traps. Currently putting stone traps around every staircase, but I want to build more complex stuff, like using my river/waterfall to flood certain areas on command.

Being able to divert the river flow to this area between the two sets of walls would be dope, though that might require too much water/time during a siege. There is also a section of the map to the north that's mostly decline, so possibly routing the river to that and flooding the northern valley could be interesting. Of course, I also would like the river to serve less destructive purposes, so I'm thinking about what a waterwheel there would accomplish.

I'm building more bridges to link sections of the ravine, for both practicality and the aesthetic. Gonna be important to have dwarves to pull these levers should anyone come from those directions.

Wells

I swear I'm gonna figure this out eventually. I mean I have wells next to the river, but those of course are useless in winter, and get destroyed when the river unfreezes anyway (there's probably a way to prevent that but meh). I have a well next to the tavern, but that source also freezes, and anyway I would like a cleaner setup. So with that aquifer under it, I'm going to try again to build a room, dig holes in it, and create a clean water supply underneath. Also, I placed some wells down the in the caverns; hope I don't regret that later.

Raids/Exploration

I don't think I've ever posted a map of the surrounding areas so here:

I don't think Punchsmiths actually shows on the overworld so I highlighted where I think we are. The kobolds are apparently still a problem but I don't see where they could be coming from other than the nearby tower we razed. Just gotta deal with them I guess.

This is the real problem of course. The elves stopped our raid but were also kind of pushovers during the ambush (look don't listen to what the kobolds have to say about it okay). So I'm training my dwarves up so they can pillage the closest tree forts.

Now there's also exploration which I haven't done yet. Honestly the overworld is so zoomed out it's hard to notice individual areas for this, but I did notice something interesting

Girderpillar, my first fort! I knew it was in the area but I don't think I realized I made Punchsmiths so close to it. Probably nothing interesting there, but there may be resources to reclaim so this will be my first explore mission.

I was looking at the artifacts page and noticed, hey wow this friendly dwarf fort has a ton of the things. It's probably not worth starting fights with friends at this stage, but maybe important to keep in mind. There is a friendly elf fort nearby rumored to have an artifact, so that will be the a future raid mission.

Library

I've started production on scrolls and quires (not sure how much it will actually matter for wealth generation, but the wiki says making the quires into books actually lowers their value so no book binding for now).

Caverns

I have reopened the caverns. There's water near the stairway entrance so I built some wells there as an emergency water source. Don't really have a plan in place here except maybe build a bunch of walls to try and contain my suicidally explorative dwarves. I know the soil is good for farming so mayyyybe try that? Also I didn't think about it before but

There are dead zones in the caverns that don't connect to anything, so I could mine those out safely. Maybe that's where farming should happen.

The queen's rooms are almost up to her expectations, and I did accidentally learn that once they are I'll be encouraged to dig deeper, so cavern conquering is looking like another goal in mind.

Optimization

It's been mentioned that frames are gonna be an issue as I advance to a population of 300, and they already have been during the last ambush. For the most part though, the game is performing well enough that it hasn't been on my mind, but I will look into optimization options once things get more Fun.
