~Unrated Christmas/New Year's Hollow Knight One-Shot~

Word Count: 2,256

Characters: Hornet, Herrah the Beast, Midwife, and the Pale King

Summary: It is the end of the year and all of Hallownest's peoples seem to have a celebration.

The young Gendered Child, born of two cultures, is faced with the task of choosing which to follow––her Mother's woven tradition or her Father's feast––and making it to the event in time.

Author's notes: Did I create a whole speculative cultural holiday specifically for baby Hornet to cry over? Yes.

Those who grow up with separated parents will probably know the hassle of choosing which household go celebrate the season in. Hornet may not be a child of divorce, but the circumstances of her birth could lead to a lot of similar situations. Though, they only really complicate things during Hallownest’s holidays post-Sealing as her main parent is no longer around. There's grieving, awkward parenting from the King, and a still nameless Hornet who is hanging onto her childhood like a blanket. (And I hope this short story provides some catharsis to anyone who's been in a similar situation to the Gendered Child here!)

Shovin was once apart of the moth tribe, but when the infection arose, instead of facing his tribe in their collective crime of forgetting the radiance, he ran away and hid. He now passes as a Mosskin in Greenpath, and worships Unn. He is quiet, and finds shame with himself

Melphissa is a weaver who remained in Hallownest after the infection appeared. She makes garments enhanced/enchanted with weaver loom patterns that she spins herself. She is vain and prioritizes physical appearance, taking great pride in making garbs for those who ask.

Bieter is a Honeypot Ant who came from another nest. he gathers exotic or hard to find food (usually honey), and sells it to others as he travels. Bieter has a short fuse and doesnt entirely know when to back down, willing to take on foes or challenges far too big for him.

Hoggin doesnt remember their past. All they know is the Grimm troupe they've joined and their role as a performer. All they desire is to make people happy. They are cryptic and jovially antagonistic (but are truly joyful and carefree)

Time to think about how alone the pale king was when he died. He had lost everything. His kingdom yes, but even his closest relationships.

His trusted friends, who became dreamers, gave up their lives and all for a hopeless cause. His wife was driven away by her guilt and her grief. His child who he had learned to love, he sacrificed for nothing.

Almost every character that we know of who had a personal relationship with PK had either been sacrificed or had left him.

And of course all of it was his own doing. (At least largely his own doing.)

Still he sat completely alone in that throne room when he died there.

Jeweler, two spiders today!! A spider that uses her strong golden silk and craftsmen skills to make jewelry, she will often use jewelry to lure bugs into her cave to be eaten. using bugs desire for riches as a trap, though shes not always cruel, and will sometimes freely gift her beautiful art to those shes fond of.

How do you think Hornet would’ve acted as the future heir to Hallownest if there was no infection? Do you have any specific hcs of ruler!Hornet?
