. Post-production (Tours of a certain country): Geology, topography, bio-sociology…what factors determine our sense of place? Reading what Malpas and Wittgenstein have to say about place and experience…I love Malpas’ subtitle: ‘A philosophical topography.' . Field notes (Tours of a certain country): getting to know this land inside and out...a macro perspective on gypsum recovered on-site in Gibellina Vecchia. The presence of gypsum in the Belice Valley contributed to the instability of local construction...the readily available gypsum was utilized instead of more solid materials in the region. Upon impact from the 1968 earthquake, these buildings crumbled like cake. @liniwade @abbruzzese.gabriele @weareconcretegroup #concretegroup #weareconcretegroup #whitegarage #contemporaryart #photography #anthropocene #swabseed #swabartfair #swab #artbarcelona #swab2019 #artery #art #instaart #photodocumentary #photodocumentation #artresearch #fieldnotes #gibellina #gibellinavecchia #postproduzione (at Torino Centro) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2w-rEmH48t/?igshid=168xlo4aenykz

. In production on-site in Gibellina Vecchia (thanks for the photo Daniele Pecorella of Gibel Transfer). Interviewing those who lived here before the earthquake struck in 1968. Our subject, nicknamed ‘Berlusconi’, was only six when the earthquake struck. This agricultural center in the mountains in the province of Trapani knew hardship, he recounted. Something he will never forget, he says, is the moment when his class was studying geography. As they were looking over the provinces in Sicily, he was eager to find his town. Salaparuta, Santa Ninfa, and Partanna, the surrounding communities were all there, but Gibellina was not on the map. We are still without points of reference as we try to get our bearings in the ruins of the city transformed into the immense landwork by Alberto Burri, Il Cretto Grande. @liniwade @abbruzzese.gabriele @weareconcretegroup #concretegroup #weareconcretegroup #whitegarage #contemporaryart #photography #anthropocene #swabseed #swabartfair #swab #artbarcelona #swab2019 #artery #art #instaart #photodocumentary #photodocumentation #artresearch #fieldnotes #gibellinavecchia #forensicarchitecture (at Gibellina Vecchia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2yy7MwiN0Z/?igshid=22dzgu74ugal

Abbruzzese and Wade (Concrete Group) work within the themes of social deconstruction and contemporary anthropological change.  // Click for Bio    Concrete Group is the visual result of the conversation between two artists, Gabriele Abbruzzese and Lisa Wade. Coming from different nations, backgrounds and training, they decided to combine their artistic research in 2015. The exhibition Due South at The Delaware Contemporary Museum in Wilmington, DE marks their first time that they exhibited as a collective in 2017, after having experimented collaborating together at their two-person show, Low Brass, at La Galerie in Geneva, Switzerland in 2016. Their solo exhibition, Artery, at White Garage in Catania, Italy in 2019, represents the cycle of works which address the finite nature of human construction, focusing on the Imera bridge of the A19 highway in Sicily, whose pylons gave way under a dramatic landslide, severing the main transportation route between Eastern and Western Sicily. Concrete Group uses this local news story as a pretext to question the repercussions of the environmental impact of our Anthropocene age. The photographic works A19 and the video Infinity (Loop) evidence both the physical and emotional constraints of flow, as well as the fragility of man-made infrastructures. Concrete Group is currently investigating the social and environmental impact of the uprooting of an entire city due to natural disaster - the 1968 Belice earthquake near Trapani, Sicily. Complicated local dynamics and divergent first-hand accounts of the citizens, in limbo for fifteen years, frame their controversial relocation to a new city constructed in an experimental approach according to artistic and architectural criteria, without regard to their practical needs. The photographs from the series Ripristino dei Tracciati Stradali del Vecchio Centro Urbano (Restoration of the Viability for the Old City Centre), presented at the SWAB art fair in Barcelona, represent the allocation of governmental funds meant to restore the viability and to reconstruct homes impacted by natural disaster, which were then re-designated to construct the land artwork Il Grande Cretto by Alberto Burri. The artwork covered the remains of the entire town of post-earthquake Gibellina under a thin, white veil of concrete, entombing the victims which they were never able to recover. In 2017, both artists represented the artist-run space BOCS (Box of Contemporary Space) from Catania, Italy at the Lucca Art Fair. In 2016, they were visiting artists at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston and participated in the Bocs Art Residency in Cosenza, Italy. In 2015, they took part in the exhibition, Crossroads at The Brodbeck Foundation in Catania, Italy. Gabriele Abbruzzese lives and works in Torino, Italy. In 2013, he graduated in Digital Applications for Visual Arts from the Academy Fine Arts in Catania and works in photography, video and new media. In 2014, Abbruzzese was a finalist for the FAM award at the Fabbriche Chiaramontane in Agrigento, Italy. Among other recent collaborations: The Garden of Forking Paths Summer School from MASS Alexandria, Egypt, a Collateral Event of Manifesta 12 - The European Biennale of Contemporary Art, Palermo, Italy; 2015, Viaggi Straordinari at Von Holden Studio, Palermo, Italy; 2014, MOLECOLE curated by Galleria Occupata, Favara, Cinema d'essai, Ritmo, Catania and Give Away to Give a Way at Schaufenster, Berlin. From 2015, he has researched and documented exhibitions and artistic events throughout Italy via video and photography. Born in the U.S., Lisa Wade has lived and worked in Europe for over 15 years. With an MFA in painting from American University, she currently works in photography, time-lapse video and installation. She has taught art practice in Italy for American University, Gordon College, and SACI. She won the Celeste Prize International in Installation/Sculpture in 2010, and participated in the Italian Pavillion of the 54th Venice Biennale.  As an artist-as-curator, she brought the group exhibition Sing Sweet Songs of Conviction to five nations from 2012 to 2013; as a residency coordinator she followed the production of artists from Berlin, Mexico City, and Boston at art centres in Agrigento and Catania. Also in Sicily, she unified nine independent art spaces in one city-wide pop-up exhibition, MOLECOLE, with the contemporary art magazine Balloon at Favara in June 2015. In 2018, Wade managed the organisation and the realization of the Collateral Events for Manifesta 12 - The European Biennale of Contemporary Art in Palermo. Additional recent exhibitions include: 2016, Gang City at Spazio Thetis, Venice, Italy (The Venice Architecture Biennale, Reporting from the Front); 2015, Officine at Palazzo Lucarini Contemporary, Trevi, Give Away to Give a Way, BOCS (Box of Contemporary Space), Catania, Italy; 2014, Chautauqua Annual, Chautauqua, NY curated by Jerry Saltz.
