On February 14, people all over the world come together in solidarity to raise awareness and show support for One Billion Rising. One Billion Rising is the biggest, mass action with the aim of ending violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence), in human history.
Webster Leiden Campus has partnered up with The Bridge2Hope for the past few years in hosting a flash mob on this day. The Bridge2Hope is a research and intervention based program aimed at the treatment and rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking. They work with undocumented victims within the Amsterdam area and serve as an anchor for them, as they rebuild their lives.
We would like to invite you to join us and stand in solidarity against sexual violence. Each year the number of people showing support has increased and we hope to see the same happening this year!

Guest Lecturer Lousewies van der Laan (5th from the right) with students at Webster Leiden Campus Guest lecture former Fraction Leader Dutch Parliament and former EU parliamentarian at Webster Leiden Campus On Tuesday October 29th Lousewies van der Laan was invited to give a guest lecture for the students of Introduction to Comparative Politics, a course lectured by dr. Piotr Perczynski at Webster Leiden Campus. Ms. Van der Laan is former Fraction Leader of the Democraten 66 party in the Dutch Parliament, former EU parliamentarian, and currently head of corporate affairs at Eurojust, the EU agency for judicial co-operation in criminal matters.
Ms. Van der Laan lectured both about her current activities at Eurojust and about her former political career. She explained why an organisation like Eurojust is so vital in modern Europe, by leading the students through an example of a murder case concerning a few EU and non-EU countries. It was very clear and evident for the students and at the same time an appealing and exciting story.
Subsequently, Ms. Van der Laan went on to lecture about her experiences as a political leader of one of the (currently ruling) political parties in the Netherlands. Topics that were discussed included: what are pros and cons for joining the ruling coalition? How it is to be one of the first female leaders of an established political party? Is it wise to campaign with your radical reforms or wait strategically for a better moment?
The lecturer spoke with eloquence and the passion of a political activist, using many first-hand examples. Apart from many questions that were answered, one comment of a student reflected the atmosphere very well: “I have no questions, just wanted to say you inspired me a lot”.
