Spreading my "Cumulus is def a blood hound because I said so" headcanon. Sunny doesn't stand a chance.
It's not that Sunshine's distracted, it's just that Cumulus is wearing a white shirt that cannot belong to her given how big it's on her and nothing else, which is a far better thing to focus on than whatever Sunshine was doing before the air ghoulette entered the kitchen.
Sharp pain in her pointer finger. Ouch. Right, she was cutting an apple. Sunshine curses, immediately trying to do damages control, jerking her hand away from the fruit in an attempt not to get any blood on it. It isn't too bad, just a little cut that will easily be concealed under a plaster, but it still bleeds enough to trickle down her hand in a steady drip.
Sunshine is about to reach for a tissue when her hand is snatched in a firm grip. She looks up, immediately freezing when she catches sight of Cumulus' eyes, almost entirely black with the way her pupils expanded. She's not meeting Sunshine's, no, Cumulus is entirely focused on the crimson smeared on the hybrid ghoulette's hand, tongue darting out to wet plush lips. Satan, Sunshine finally understand what a prey feels like when it's backed against a wall, nothing but sharp teeth and danger facing it.
She probably shouldn't like it as much as she does.
"...Lus ?"
Before Sunshine's mind can properly wraps itself around the situation, Cumulus dips her head down, tongue lolling out of her mouth to capture every single drop of blood, lavishing it against the hybrid ghoulette's hand with a hungry sort of devotion.
"Sweet," Cumulus purrs, diving back down to take two of Sunshine's fingers in her mouth, fangs scrapping lightly against her skin, a very real warning for Sunny to keep still. But really, Cumulus has nothing to worry about ; for Sunshine to move, she'd have to be in the possession of a working brain, which, ever since she felt red painted lips wrap around her fingers, is not the case anymore.
Fuck, she's almost instantly throbbing.
Cumulus looks up through pale eyelashes, tongue flicking obscenely over the delicate webbing between Sunny's pointer and middle finger, smirking the best she can around the two digits, which is very clearly an attempt on the hybrid ghoulette's life.
Satanas, Sunshine needs to sit down ; she feels lightheaded, which makes sense, given the amount of blood that rushed to her cock at ungodly speed. Cumulus scoots closer, wraps an arm around Sunny's waist to bring her closer, pressing their fronts together until they can both feel eachother's tiniest movement. Sunshine's stupid double tail starts wagging incontrolably when Cumulus' wraps around her thigh, teasing at the front of her shorts, where a bulge is already clearly visible, pressing against the soft flesh of the air ghoulette's stomach.
Cumulus coos, freeing Sunshine's fingers just to lap at stray drops that found their way to the inside of her wrist.
"Sunny, Sunny, Sunny," the air ghoulette sing-songs, eyes sharp, "sweet girl."
Her hand slides down, down down, until Sunshine makes a wounded little noise at the divine pressure on her painfully hard cock.
"It looks like you have a little problem, mmh ?" Cumulus goes on, now whispering directly in Sunny's ear. All she can do is nod, chest heaving. Cumulus grins, fangs on display.
"I can fix that."
Sunshine's last coherent thought is that she is about to get wrecked.

April 8, 2021: Swiss Army Man (2016) (Recap: Part One)
Don’t think about the Boy who Lived.
Tumblr media
Daniel Radcliffe is a talented actor with a wider range than he’s given credit for. He’s been working since childhood, and has picked up quite a lot over time. While most famous for...a certain role that will go unnamed...he famously started his stage career in 2007 with the musical Equus, and that later progressed to How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and Endgame.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, he also made appearances of television in varied roles, live-action and animated. He started his career in an adaptation of David Copperfield in 1999, voiced a character on The Simpsons three separate times, hosted Saturday Night Live in 2012, and also currently has an excellent role in the anthology series Miracle Workers.
Tumblr media
And MEANWHILE, he also had quite the robust film career, especially after...the role which shall not be named. There were a few films made during that time period, like December Boys and The Woman in Black, but most of his time was understandably taken up, as was his public image. That, of course, ends in 2011. The first time I saw him in a role outside he who shall not be named was in the film Kill Your Darlings, about the collegiate career and romance in the life of famous gay poet Allen Ginsburg. It was very good!
Tumblr media
The same year, 2013, he starred in Horns, a unique fantasy film that I considered watching for Fantasy March. His film career would be full of ups (The F Word, Trainwreck, Lost in London) and downs (Victor Frankenstein, Now You See Me 2, Playmobil: the Movie oh God REALLY JESUS). And right in the middle of those came one of his most famous weird roles. And that’s today’s focus. And I’ve been wanting to watch it for YEARS. And while we’re talking about him, let’s talk about this film’s other star: Paul Dano.
Tumblr media
Dano’s career also began young, and in the opposite way to Radcliffe’s: in theatre first. After a stint on Broadway at the age of 12 (GODDAMN) in Inherit the Wind, as well as several other productions, he transitioned to film in 2000, around the same time that Radcliffe started as well. Eventually, he gained acclaim with his role in Little Miss Sunshine, and then...anybody else in the mood for a milkshake right about now?
Tumblr media
Yeah, I haven’t seen that movie, but I really should this year. Consider it on my list...at some point. I’ll figure it out. Anyway, Dano’s role in There Will Be Blood only increased his acclaim, and found him acting in a number of indie films. Dano’s definitely not a blockbuster guy, but that’s not to say that he completely avoids them either. He’s been in Knight and Day, Cowboys and Aliens, and Looper, which all fall under that category. And except for the last one...they aren’t especially good, either.
But again, he was also in 12 Years a Slave, Okja, Wildlife, Where the Wild Things Are, and Meek’s Cutoff, and all of those were critically acclaimed, and some almost reached blockbuster status themselves. So I don’t really know how to feel about his upcoming role as...the Riddler.
Tumblr media
Yeah, we’ll see, but I’m holding my breath. Dano’s great, and I love the Riddler, but...I dunno. Like I said, we’ll see. But in the meantime, that’s enough navel-gazing. Let’s watch Swiss Army Man! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap (1/2)
Tumblr media
We begin at sea. If you have thalassophobia, this is already terrifying for you. After seeing many plastics floating on the ocean, covered in written messages, we make our way to a deserted island, where Hank Thompson (Paul Dano) is committing suicide after being stranded there for so long.
Tumblr media
However, as he does, he spies someone lying on the beach. The rope snaps, and Hank runs over to greet the body, hoping that he isn’t dead. Unfortunately, after a very loud burst of flatulence, it’s pretty damn clear that this is a dead body. And yes, this is Daniel Radcliffe, but I’ll introduce him formerly when the time comes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hank’s sad that the guy isn’t alive, but still speaks to him about his hopes and dreams in the past. He’d always wanted a life of parties and friends and love, and imagined that he’d see that kind of life in a flash before he died. Instead, he only saw the body, who responds with yet another fart. But with that, Hank goes back to trying to hang himself.
And as he does...the body keeps interrupting with its INSANE gas. Like, it’s so bad that the body keeps shaking as if it were alive. The body washes into the sea, and its flatulence begins to propel it away from the shore. Hank sees this, and he uses the humming he was doing to make the Intro Song, which is strangely mesmerizing? Like, literally soundtrack-worthy, I’m not kidding. He also grabs a piece of his noose, uses it to grab onto the body, and rides it as the farts propel them both far away from the beach. It’s absolutely absurd...and kind of great. And then the titles play.
Tumblr media
Hank wakes up on the short of a different island, or possible a larger land mass, and is overjoyed by the change in scenery. He shouts his name to the world, and credits the body with his rescue. No longer stranded in the Pacific, as far as we know, he tries to use his phone, to no avail. He decides to head out and look for help, grabbing a bag of Cheetos that washed up alongside them, bids the body farewell...and then comes back for it.
Tumblr media
Carrying the farting body on his back (and kind of treating him as if he’s alive), he wanders through the forest to find help. He wonders if the gas is the result of decomposition (likely, if excessive), or if its the body’s soul leaving it. Either way, the trudge forward. They settle in a cave for the night, as it rains heavily outside. As Hank is want to do, he hums to himself, and shares more of his personal life with the body, as he sings to it. And yeah, I’ve been linking to these songs, because the soundtrack is genuinely fascinating to me.
Morning comes, and Hank awakes to a raccoon prying at the body, which he subsequently chases for food. In his desperation for food and water, he’s once again about to leave the body in the cave, but notices it leaking copious amounts of water from its mouth, which it had collected from the cave walls overnight. And yes...he drinks it. Which is absolutely disgusting when you think about it, which I now choose NOT to.
Tumblr media
In the process, Hank squeezes the body for more water, and air escapes his mouth in such a way that it sounds like it’s speaking a name: Manny (Daniel Radcliffe). From that, Hank gets the body to speak his name and a simple greeting, but grows frustrated from the inability of the body to speak properly. This leads to him being a bit abusive towards him, reminding him unfavorably of his own father. Ooh, character revelations, me like.
Anyway, he apologizes to Manny for treating him that way...and Manny responds. Which FREAKS HANK THE FUCK OUT, understandably, and he punches Manny and flees the cave. As he comes back, Manny is indeed speaking outright, which is either a miracle or Hank just straight-up hallucinating. Either way, Hank asks Manny to try and remember his past life, but all he can get is the vague recollection of the Jurassic Park theme song. But Manny can’t remember the movie itself, which is when Hank says the most correct line ever said in all of film.
Tumblr media
You’re goddamn right. Anyway, from, there, Hank tries to teach Manny about the ways of the world, and the nature of life and death. And the resulting conversation is absolutely fuckin’ ridiculous, and I love it all. Through the process, Manny learns about the world, and Hank asks him to help get home.
Tumblr media
In the process, Manny inadvertently insults Hank, causing to walk off and once again look for help, only to eat poison berries and throw up for a sec. The two reunite, and their conversation turns to the topic of sex. See, there are some magazines in the cave that they’re in, which prompts some questions about women, sex, and love. To both of their surprise, this conversation causes Manny’s heart to beat! Spurred on, Hank continues, and Manny’s heart appears to reawaken...as does his penis. That’s a link to the soundtrack, I promise.
Hank and Manny both freak out, as his little Manny seems to have a mind (and motility) of its own. But in the ever absurd nature of this movie’s premise, this too has a secondary function: it’s a compass. Yup. And that prompts the next step of their journey, which is full of a conversation about fetishes and masturbation. Yeah, Hank’s surprised about that, too.
Tumblr media
This leads to a conversation about his parents, as well as somewhat traumatic parts of his childhood, including his mother’s premature death. This makes Hank upset, and he lashes out at Manny, who briefly returns to being dead until Hank apologizes. As they go on, however, they encounter another denizen of the forest: a bear. This causes the two to fall off a cliff, and causes Hank’s phone to fall out of his pocket and turn on, allowing Manny to see the picture of a girl on his background.
Manny’s enraptured by the picture, and constantly asks to see her again, as Hank continues to struggle for food. The problem is that Hank needs to conserve the power on the phone, but Manny asks if Hank can dress up as the girl in order to help him remember, and bring him back to life to help save them both. He does so reluctantly, but Manny calls him beautiful, to which Hank reacts positively. This not only helps Manny come to life a little more, but also leads Hank to shave to look more convincing for Manny...and possibly for Hank, too.
Tumblr media
As these two engage on a fake date and create a fake bus (while Manny listens to a fake self-sung cover of Cotton Eye Joe that I’m putting on my playlist), this is a good time to mention the one thing I know about this movie...maybe. I don’t quite remember where I heard this, but I have heard that this film is possibly a commentary on the transgender experience, or at the very least that Hank is transgender, but hasn’t come to terms with that as of yet. Now, I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I have heard that, and I’m definitely interested to see if that’s the direction this goes. This scene definitely seems to somewhat confirm this theory. Also, I will say (as I have said before when watching The Danish Girl), I’m a straight dude of the cissexual sort, so this is in NO WAY in my wheelhouse, but I still figured I’d mention it.
Tumblr media
We’re also at the halfway point now, so this would seem like a good time to pause for Part 2! See you there!

Worth the Risk, Part 9
Tumblr media
Rating: Mature(18+only)
Word Count: 1881
Pairing: Army Pilot!Poe Dameron x Nurse!Reader (1940s AU)
Summary: It’s the 1940s, Army pilot and Captain Poe Dameron is flying on missions for the United States Army in Europe.  After being shot down off the coast of France, Poe wakes up in an Army hospital in England, to find you, a nurse, taking care of him. Throughout the process of his recovery, Poe finds himself falling for you, and even though you, for the most part, maintain a professional relationship with him–you’re falling for him as well. Both of you know the risks of falling in love during a war, but then again, both of you have never cared much for being cautious.
Warnings:  Angst, swearing, blood (nothing too graphic though)
Taglist: @fanfic-addict-98, @thescarletknight2014, @blushingwueen, @americasass-romanoff, @ginger-swag-rapunzel, @spider-starry, @totelpoedameron, @captain-america5, @liadamerondjarin, @m1rkw00dpr1ncess
If you want to be added to the taglist, please let me know☺️I did my best to remain as historically accurate as possible. The GIF comes from Band of Brothers (highly recommended if you have not seen it, it is very good). Prior to the forces arriving on the beach, the Allies did drop paratroopers over Normandy to begin taking key bridges and locations. I do recommend at leasing watching the D-Day drop scene from Band of Brothers, it will definitely set the tone for this opening scene.
June 6, 1944--just after midnight
They flew by the cover of night over the English Channel. The tension on the plane was so thick that Poe was certain he could cut it with a knife. The unit of paratroopers were doing everything they could to calm their nerves; Poe heard lighters, smelled cigarette smoke. Some were muttering prayers, he had noticed a few of them clutching to rosary beads.  He was praying that the clouds would give them enough cover until they had to drop lower so the paratroopers could safely jump. Once they broke through the clouds for the drop it would be open season on the fleet of planes.
Poe would catch a quick glimpse of your photograph every now and then when he could take his eyes of the panels. He hoped that wherever you were, that you were safe. As they inched closer to the drop zone, Poe noticed the clouds light up, followed by a loud explosion.
“What is that?” Arana asked, peeking up from his position. “Thunder?”
“Not thunder,” Snap said, swallowing. “Shells.”
“They spotted us,” Poe stated. “Let those boys know we’re close.”
Snap flipped a switch on his panel, which turned a red light on in the back of the plane to signal that the paratroopers needed to prepare for their jump--they were getting close to the drop zone. He looked nervously at Poe. “Once we’re in range, Dameron, those shells have the potential rip this plane apart.”
Poe held the C-47 steady as they broke over the clouds and began to take heavy fire. “Then we just need to make this drop as quick as we possibly can and get the fuck back to England.  Arana, how much time until we reach the drop sight?”
Arana glanced at his maps and then his instruments. “Fuck, at least two minutes, Poe. We aren’t gonna survive this if we fly at this altitude for another two minutes!”
“We drop them here they’re way off target!” Poe shouted over the explosions.
“Dameron! If we don’t drop them here, we’re dead!” Arana yelled back as the hull of their plane was ripped up with bullets. “Jesus! Either we’re gonna blow up or be torn up by a machine gun!!”
“Can we pick up speed?”
“No! They won’t be able to make the jump if we do!”
Poe cursed as a bullet grazed his windshield, cracking it, and then the glass next to Snap shattered and his co-pilot screamed in pain. “Snap!” he cried, frantic. “Iolo! Snap’s been hit!”
Arana jumped forward. Behind him the glass next to their radio operator exploded. He managed to duck from the shrapnel, but their operator wasn’t as lucky as one lodged into his neck, killing him instantly. All three men sat there for a few seconds in sheer horror as the young man’s blood stained the cockpit floor--and then they remembered where they were as planes around them began to explode, plunging to the dairy fields below in fiery dives.
Reaching over, Poe flipped the switch and turned the jump light from red to green, signaling to the paratroopers to make the jump. He wasn’t sure if they were near the drop zone but at this point, if he wanted to get what remained of his crew home, he was going to have to have the airborne unit jump.
He wasn't sure how long it took them to make the jump, but once Arana gave him the signal that all the boys had vacated the plane, Poe turned it sharply and pushed the throttle as fast as the C-47 would let him to get them out of range of those German shells.
More glass shattered. Poe heard more metal being ripped apart by bullets and the plane shook underneath them with every shell volley that they somehow narrowly missed. For a few tense minutes, Poe wasn’t sure they were going. to make it out of range--but then suddenly the English Channel was before them and the terror of the German bombardment was behind them.
His heart was beating so rapidly that Poe believed it was actually beating out of his chest. “Holy shit,” he breathed now that the plane was steady. “How’s Snap?”
“Piece of glass is just above his heart, several gunshot wounds,” Arana replied. “Fuck he’s losing a lot of blood, Dameron.”
“Hang in there, Snap,” Poe encouraged. “We’ll get you back to the docs.”
“Yeah, they’ll patch you up, just like Poe.”
“Everything is going to be fine.”
Snap looked so pale. All he could muster was a slight nod of his head and a groan of pain while Arana applied pressure to as many of the gunshot wounds as he could to stop the blood loss.
Poe wished the plane could go faster. The doctors wouldn’t be able to help his friend once they got back to England if he bled to death before they even arrived. Come on, come on, come on! Each time he looked at Snap he could see that his friend was getting worse and worse. How was it that Poe had survived free falling from the sky into the ocean and Snap might not survive a bullet to his chest?
Once they were in radio range of the base, Poe was able to alert them that they needed medical assistance. When he landed the plane and it taxied to a stop, the medics were quickly on board, taking over for Arana.
Both of them stood there, silently for the longest time as another medical team took care of the radio operator’s body. Poe felt sick to his stomach knowing he was going to have to write another letter home to a fallen solider’s family.
Now that they were safe, he realized how close they’d all come to dying on this mission. The cockpit was covered in blood and shattered glass. Shakily, Poe and Arana got off their C-47, and finally saw the damage their plane had taken. It was laced with scorch marks and bullet holes.
“Fuck,” Arana cursed under his breath. “Nice flying, Dameron.”
“Thanks,” Poe replied. “I think.”
“Do you see our plane?”
“Yeah.”
“It’s like fucking Swiss cheese. Your flying got us back to England.”
“Personally, I think it was luck.”
Arana laughed, nervously. “Luck, divine intervention--call it whatever you want--we made it back from this one.”
Poe rubbed a hand over his face. Yes, they’d made it back. He wouldn’t know how many planes did make it until later. In the distance he could hear the engines of more returning and he sighed. “You should go get some sleep; not sure when we’ll be needed again.”
“What about you, Poe?” Arana questioned.
“Me? I’m going to the hospital to be with Snap,” Poe answered.
“If you go, I’m going too.”
“Iolo...”
“We’re a team, Poe.”
Yes, they were a team, and Poe knew that he wouldn’t be able to talk Arana out of coming to the hospital with him--so the pair of them went together to wait out the night for news on their friend.
-----
Shortly after the first planes took off for Normandy, your unit arrived at the base to be ready to take in wounded for when the fleet of C-47′s returned. It was predicted that they were going to be met with heavy fire from the Germans and while the planes might not sustain enough damage to go down--that didn’t mean their crews would come back unscathed.
Already your fatigues were stained with blood once the first wave of wounded arrived. Pilots and their crews lined the rows of cots in the medical tents; it took all of your will power to push thoughts of Poe from your mind while you worked on treating the men.
You knew that just because you didn’t see him amongst the wounded, it didn’t mean he had survived the flight to Normandy. There was still the chance that his plane had ended up in. the fields or at the bottom of the English Channel.
At 6:30 that morning word came that the Allies had landed on the beach. There was a somber mood in the hospital then. Everyone knew that the losses were going to be heavy.
“Lieutenant, you’ve been working all night. Head back. Get some sleep.”
You glanced up at the doctor your unit was now working for. He was a lot nicer than Hux and you were glad that Hux had been shipped off to somewhere else with the British Army. “Are you sure, Doctor Skywalker?”
He smiled, kindly at you. “Yes. I admire your worth ethic, Y/N, but you are not going to do these boys any good if you are exhausted. Report back this afternoon, alright?”
Nodding, you removed your white--or what used to be white--surgical scrubs, tossing them into a basket of other discarded scrubs. The sun was bright when you stepped out of the medical tent and the air smelled like rain. If it weren't it weren’t for the fact that the Allies were fighting for the very freedom of the the world right now, you might have loved the warm sunshine and lingering scent of rain.
Before you went back to your barrack to get some sleep, you decided to grab a shower--albeit very cold shower--but at least you’d be clean. But you didn’t make it to the shower...
...you saw him instead, sleeping against some crates just outside the hospital.
“Poe...”
He didn’t hear you; your voice was barely a whisper, but when you dropped to your knees next to him and grabbed his face between your hands he felt you and opened his eyes. Immediately, Poe sat up, drawing you into his arms and holding onto you tightly.
You sobbed into his shoulder and clung to him. He was alive. He was alright. For now, Poe was here and he was holding you; you were going to thank God for this moment.
Poe’s lips brushed against your hair before he pulled back to wipe the tears from your cheeks. He crashed his lips against yours and kissed you, heavily. Last night he wasn’t sure he was ever going to get to do that again--hell, he wasn’t even sure he was going to see England again last night.
“Why are you sleeping out here?” you asked when he pulled away from you.
“They wouldn’t let me in the hospital,” Poe answered.
Searching his eyes, you could tell that his flight last night had been hell. “Poe? What happened?”
Poe squeezed his eyes shut. “We got the paratroopers to Normandy. My plane is a wreck--lost my radio guy--Snap took shrapnel and a few bullets... the doctors took him to surgery but they wouldn’t let me in. So, I camped out here.”
Your fingers wandered to his hair, brushing it back from his forehead and still marveling that he was here with you. “Alone?”
“Nope,” another male voice said. “He had me.”
Startled, you watched as another man sat up just behind Poe and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He smiled at you when he saw you. “Oh, so you’re the girl taped to the panels. Hi! Lieutenant Arana--I’m Captain Dameron’s navigator.”
Returning the smile, you remembered that name from Poe’s letter. He had been the one that was teasing Poe, the one that Poe had threatened to tell lies about to you in order to keep you from setting him up with one of your friends. “Hi, I’m Lieutenant Y/L/N.”
Poe brushed your hair, looking at you seriously. “Sweetheart, you look exhausted. Tell me you where on your way to sleep when you saw me?”
“I was.”
“Come on, I’ll walk you back to your barrack.”
“What about Snap?”
“Arana will come find me if he gets news.”
You glanced at the other man and he shrugged his shoulders, muttering, “It’s not like I’m going anywhere right now.”
Poe got up and held his hand out to you to help you to your feet. Once you were standing, the two of you began to walk back towards the barracks. “I’m gonna have to fly back there,” he told you. “Bombing missions; it could take us days to secure those beaches..”
Looking at your feet while you walked, you nodded. “I know. Until they're secure, we’re staying here.”
His lips brushed against your temple. “Good. It’s safer here.”
Taking a deep breath, you stated, “You don’t want me going there.”
“Fuck, no,” Poe cursed. “Our forces will be at risk for attack.”
“We’re at risk here.”
“Not as great, darling.”
It was hard to argue with that; you couldn’t argue with that. As you approached the nurses barracks you heard footsteps running behind you and Arana screaming for Poe.
Poe turned to see his friend and immediately he felt his heart sink. “What is it?”
Arana swallowed. “It’s Snap.”

Yet another Ghost one shot thIIIS TIME with our all time fave Rainy boe 🌧️ 💖
"And now as you all now, sisters, it has come! The sublime moment of choice! Which one of you will satisfy my beloved ghouls for this week!" Papa Emeirutus III spoke as he looked at all of us. That was wrong. Everyone knew that was wrong but yet it was the only right thing to be done. We were The sisters of sin after all, however wrong or amorally an action would be... We were obligated to serve. To please, preach and prays. And that's exactly what we were about to do. Each Sunday , Papa and the Ghouls organized a ritual specially for their own satisfaction in order to choose their play toy for the week. A week full of terror, fear, sex, pain... But nothing more.
The ghouls were looking at us, each smiling at the thought of having a whore, pleasing his own personal needs. That thought was terrifying me. I was shaking. My hands were trembling, my mouth was dry and I desperately tried to swallow the knot in my throat. The girl next to me, Samantha I think was here name, was dying of curiosity. She was visibly excited about the choice. She always hoped she'd get picked again but that was unlikely to happen since Papa and the ghouls ordered virgins. Most of us however, were shook to the core.
"This time, I thought... I thought that maybe one of my very, very respected ghouls would take care of such a hard decision." 'Shit' I cursed mentally as I watched Papa turning swiftly to his servants. I was literally begging every energy, spirit and power in the universe for him not to pick Dewdrop or Swiss. These two were the worst, by words of some sisters... "Rain! Would you come closer now?" Papa shouted as welcomed the ghoul next to him. Rain. Rain was the best of the worst! He was tall and slim, quiet as he always was and extremely uncomfortable in the position of the bad guy. He was no less surprised as the rest of us. "Whoever is the girl, she is lucky! Ivw heard he's not so bad" Amanda whispered as i looked at her, still trying my best not to tear up. "I hope so" I whispered back with a note of desperation in my voice.
"Now Rain, which one of these beautiful, sinful creatures would you choose to warm your and your brothers' beds?" Papa announced as he made a hand gesture at us. He really was enjoying this, unlike any of us. That was it. The moment of Truth. I raised my watery eyes at the scene where Rain was doing his best to look as manly and scary as possible, while the other ghouls were waiting impatiently in behind him. He waited. We all waited. Rain was scanning the whole crowd of girls - some young, others really old or too young, third ones just the right age. he then took a deep breathe and spoke, locking his eyes with mine - "Her." 'No. That was a dream. A bad dream. A terrible fucking nightmare!' I thought. I wanted to scream, to shout and run... To cry. But I knew that this would only make the process for them more pleasant so I just stood at my place with blood being cold as ice in my veins. My face was as white as Papa's. I couldnt even breathe normally at this point. I just wished this was a huge mistake or that he saw a girl behind or before me. "Very well. Speak up girl! What is your carnial name?" Papa asked as he walked over to me and gave out his hand. I look at his palm, feeling how my blood was boiling at this point and took his hand in mine. He led me to Rain as my satin white dress was dragging behind me. Papa and Rain both looked at me but I could read the "I'm sorry" in the ghoul's eyes. He truly didn't want this, he never liked that ritual! "Y/N." I whispered out as i waited for a response. "Y/N it is then! ...Precious..." Papa explained as ran his fingers through my hair. I was standing there like a stone. Not moving, not speaking, I was even trying not to breathe! Not crying was the hardest...
"Very well! Thank you all for participating in this! I will see you next week, my lovely sisters! Sleep well!" Papa announced as he walked out of the scene, saying something to Aether who nodded and smiled at me. Obviously Rain noticed that as well so he took me by the hand, gripping it tightly and hissed at me "Come on, Y/N. Thats our night!" So he was not different. He wasnt different at all!!! He was just like the rest - a heartless monster who knew nothing of fondness and humanity! 'How could he know...' I thought to myself as I started walking with him.
Rain was almost two heads above me which made his steps a lot bigger than mine. That caused me to jog behind him as his grip was getting tighter and tighter around my arm. "R-Rain... You're hurting me, please..." I whined feeling my tears forming. He didn't even turn around when he growled an answer "Pain is yet to come" . I was doomed and I knew that even better now when he was dragging me through the Halls of the church. I could hear the laughs of the others... Aether? Mountain? I couldn't make a difference right now. All I could think of was the suffering I was about to experience...
Rain finally stopped in front of his door, unlocked it and pulled me inside with him as he locked it again. My tears were now streaming down my cheeks , but no sound was coming out of my mouth. I was so scared, so afraid... So paralized of fear I didn't know how to react. Rain then looked through the spy then turned to me and raised his hands on the level oh his chest. I was confused. Whaf was that? A part from his way of fucking? Did he expect me to undress him? "I wont hurt you. I will never touch without your permission." He started talking. 'What?! Is that a joke?!' i thought to myself as i looked at him confused. "What does that.." I started whispering as he came closer to me and took the hand he was gripping.. this time I could feel the tenderness in his touch. "Did I hurt you? I'm so sorry Y/N, they expect me to be like that! They want me to be like that! Yet I can't just go there and..." Rain began to speak as I felt like someone had taken away s huge rock from my chest. I could breathe normally again! My blood for once wasn't boiling, I didn't feel like dying! I just started crying . This time for real. Tears were running down my cheeks, my voice was shaky and my hands were trembling. Rain stepped away from me for a second before pulling me gently into his arms. This felt so right, yet so wrong... Nothing should have turned this way. He must have been forcing his will onto me not... This... "I'm so sorry... I'm sorry." He kept of whispering as he started brushing my hair. "Thank you" I managed to whine out as I looked up to him and whispered "Thank you for not destroying the last human thing I have left.." "You have luck Papa picked me. If he chose Aether or Dewdrop.. " he explained brushing away my tears as his lips tried to form a smile. A smile filled with guilt and pain. "I.. I know. That's why I would like to... Spend the night with you." I conffesed looking at him. I never really imagine my first time like this but since that was the best of the worst... I would have taken the chance. Rain looked at me shocked as he whispered "But I don't... I never wanted to.." "But I do" I interrupted him as I continued "I only ask for mercy... Be gentle. I beg you" My palm brushed his masked cheek as his sighed quietly and nodded his head, before kissing me gently. "I promise, I won't hurt you..." Was the last thing he whispered to me..

Chapter 1: Frozen Heart
“Born of cold and winter air and mountain rain combining, this icy force both foul and fair has a frozen heart worth mining. There's beauty and there's danger here, split the ice apart! Beware the frozen heart...”
It had been a hectic Friday night, that was for sure, Katlynn Roberts reflected as she wiped down the last of her tables for the night. She still had one teenage couple in her section that looked like they were wrapping up. She ran over her to do list in her head; roll silverware, tip out the bus boy and then she was home free. She put her dish towel in the dirty bucket and check on the couple once again.
“You guys still doing okay? Anyone want another refill?” she asked brightly.
“One more Coke,” the guy said “and the check please.”
“Sure, you got it.” Kat said and took the guy's cup “One check or two?”
“One please.” the girl piped up with a smile.
“Okay, be back in second with both of those.” Kat said and turned on her heel. She printed out the check, then refilled the guy's glass and walked back to them.
“Here ya go,” she said, sitting the items down “no rush, you guys go pay at the register whenever you're ready. Let me go ahead and take some of these dishes out of your way.”
The couple nodded as Kat did just that then went into the kitchen, leaving the dishes near the sink. When she came back, the couple was at the register paying and she quickly cleaned and cleared their table. She made her way up to the register after they left, claimed her tips for the night and then grabbed the plastic bin that held the paper napkins and paper napkin rings and a bunch of silverware.
“Kat, wait!” she heard a voice call and she turned. Her co-worker, Julia, held up a different plastic bin and said “I got a bin ready for you.”
“Aw, bless you my dear!” Kat said and set the bin she was holding to the side.
“Anything for you Katniss.” Julia said, calling Kat by one of her laundry list of nick names and Kat laughed, taking the bin from her.
Kat walked over and sat down in her section then began to roll the silverware. It was a monotonous task; but it helped her relax after such a busy night. She heard some familiar chords strike up on the piped in music and shook her head, realizing what song it was; “Sex and Candy” by Marcy Playgound. She laughed and began to sway with the beat, lip syncing along with the song. She found it amazing that she could remember the words to a song that was well over twenty years old; but not remember what she did last Tuesday. She blocked out everything that was going on around her, concentrating on the task at while she entertained herself with the song.
After a little bit, she had the curious feeling she was being watched and she looked up and saw a guy looking at her.
However, this was no ordinary guy, this guy was HOT. Not a lot of guys that came through got her attention, but this one had her struggling to remember to breathe. He had brown hair, green eyes, a sharp jawline that was covered by JUST the right amount of scruff and probably the most adorable smile she'd ever seen on a guy.
“Oh great,” she thought “of course, the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on sees me making a jackass out of myself. Damn 90's one hit wonders and their catchy beats. BASTARDS!” She instantly blushed, which only made him smile even bigger, revealing perfect white teeth.
“Don't mind me,” he said “didn't mean to break your concentration.”
“No big deal,” Kat said, trying to recover some of her dignity “I'm the night time entertainment.”
“This is the show you put on?” He asked and she nodded
“That's why they pay me the big bucks,” she said and held up a roll of silverware “I multitask.”
He chuckled and said
“That's efficiency right there!” he said and she laughed.
She took note of his clothes; he was wearing a leather jacket and plaid shirt, something about it looked familiar, but she couldn't place it right away.
"You know it." she said, her heart thumping in her chest, he was hot AND funny. She watched as another guy sat with him; this one was tall, with long, dark hair. He was also wearing a leather jacket, jeans and boots. He said something to Hot, Funny Guy but Kat couldn't make it out. She looked down at her silverware and continued to nod and move her lips along with the song. When the song was over, it switched to one she didn't know and she looked up. Hot, Funny Guy was looking at her, she blushed and went back to rolling silverware.
“Okay, so he's either gay or just looking for a good time.” Kat thought “A good time wouldn't be bad, but if he's gay, then I'm shit out of luck. Or he has a girlfriend. He probably has a girlfriend. No one THAT good looking is single and straight.”
She finished up the silverware and dared to look up again. He wasn't looking this time but, dear god was he cute. Kat loaded the silverware up into the plastic container and gave it to Julia who said
"That guy was totally flirting with you!"
"I know." Kat told her
"Go say hi!" Julia said
Kat shook her head
“Nah, no way. It'd be a waste of my time.” Kat said
“What makes you say that?” Julia asked, looking shocked.
“Well, he looks like he strolled out of a magazine and I look like you could fry chicken on my forehead because it's so greasy.” Kat said
“All's I'm saying is that he is totally checking you out and you should tap that. I say it because I love you." Julia said
"Is he really?" Kat asked, secretly excited.
"Yes," Julia said "if he stares any longer, you'll be Swiss cheese."
Kat rolled her eyes
"I'll think about it, in the meantime, I'm gonna clock out and get something to eat." Kat said
"Okay." Julia said and took the silverware from Kat.
The hot, funny guy watched as the Singing Girl with dark hair stood by the bar talking to a taller brunette. She had a round shaped face, striking emerald green eyes that were slightly too large for her face, a small, button nose and luscious pink lips. She was petite, probably no more than five feet tall, wearing jeans, non slip black shoes and a t-shirt that had the diner's logo plastered on it with her hair back in a braided bun.
She turned around and walked to the back of the restaurant as he caught a glimpse of her from behind. She had a medium sized waist, however, it was her butt and thighs that had his attention.
“Holy. Shit. Nice ass.” he thought, smirking. Dirty thoughts raced through his head as she walked away.
“Hello?” the tall guy asked “Earth to Dean”
Dean snapped out of his trance and asked
“Sorry Sam, what were you babbling about?”
“Um, the case we're here to work,” Sam said “Unless you have other ideas.”
“Did you see that girl?” Dean asked Sam “She's really pretty.”
“You finding a girl attractive?” Sam asked, his voice dripping was sarcasm “There's an odd concept.”
“Listen, just because I like to mix work and pleasure doesn't make me a bad person” Dean said “If you lightened up and got laid every once in a while you wouldn't be so,” he searched for the words as the waitress brought over the coffee that had ordered “I don't know, you.”
“Can I get you fellas anything to eat?” the waitress asked.
“Just coffee for right now,” Sam said with a smile “Thank you though.”
Their waitress, the one had been talking to the Singing Girl, gave Sam a flirtatious grin and said
“You boys need anything just let me know, my name is Julia”
“Actually, I have one quick question,” Dean said “if you have a second.”
“Sure.” Julia said
“The short, dark haired girl,” Dean said “the one you were talking to?”
“Yeah?” Julia asked, her eyes brightening
“Is she single?” Dean asked and Julia nodded
“VERY,” Julia said “she thinks you're cute AND she's just about to clock out to eat at the bar. She does the same thing every night.”
“Julia, you're my new favorite person.” Dean said with a smile, tipping his coffee cup to her.
Julia blushed and giggled as she walked away
“See? She's into you.” Dean said
Sam rolled his eyes and added sugar to his coffee
“We have a case to solve,” Sam said “which is why we're here. Three mysterious deaths in a month?”
“Yeah, but that doesn't narrow down what it is” Dean said as he drank his coffee “The sheriff said it was campers and we didn't find any hex bags or sulfur at the scene when we checked it out.”
“That DOES narrow it down” Sam said “We know we're not dealing with a witch or demons, plus there was no EMF so it definitely isn't a ghost or vengeful spirit”
“So we're looking for a creature?” Dean asked “Fan-friggin-tastic.” The Singing Girl emerged from the back of the restaurant with her purse and jacket over her shoulder.
“Speaking of fan-friggin-tastic.” Dean said and smiled. She was looking down at her phone so she didn't meet his eyes.
Sam huffed
“Jesus, fine. Go get laid.”
“Jealousy never was a good look on your face Sammy” Dean said with a wink.
Kat sat down at the bar, after checking her Instagram and Julia asked
“What're we having tonight?”
“Chicken soup and double cherry pie.” Kat said
“The dinner of champions?” Julia chided and Kat nodded “Coming right up.”
Kat felt a presence next to her and looked up to see Hot, Funny Guy standing there.
“How's the pie here?” he asked
“The double cherry is the best in three counties,” Kat told him “you want a slice?”
“Hell yeah!” Hot, Funny Guy said “But only if I get to sit with you.”
“Smooth.” Kat thought and smiled “Sure,” she said and motioned to the empty seat next to her “pop a squat.”
“There's one I haven't heard before” Hot, Funny Guy said as he sat down “I'm Dean, by the way.” he stuck his hand out.
“Katlynn,” she said and took his hand “everyone calls me Kat.”
His palms were rough in hers; a working man's hands, she noted as they shook hands.
“Julia, can you get Dean a slice of double cherry pie please?” Kat asked
“That's the last slice, I'll have you know.” Julia said as she grabbed another plate and handed them each one. They both dug in as Kat's soup arrived and Dean groaned.
“Oh my god,” he said “this is amazing!”
“Right?!” Kat asked “I wasn't lying when I said best in three counties was I?”
“Nope!” Dean said and dug back in.
They fell into an easy and flirtatious conversation with lots of long glances and half smirks. Kat was no where close to wanting the night to end.
"So, Dean, what brings you to this part of Texas?" Kat asked
"Work." he said simply
"I'm so sorry," she said and he looked at her "It's boring out this way." she added
"I don't know," he said "I'm liking it so far." and looked at her.
"What're you doing after you finish that pie?" Kat asked
"Well I was gonna go back to my motel and crash, unless you have a better idea." Dean said
"That depends, do you play pool?" She asked
"Oh, I don't just play," Dean said "I own it."
Kat raised her eye brows and clicked her tongue
"Really? That sounds like a challenge." she said
"You play?" He asked
"Yep, and I play to win." she said
Someone cleared their throat and they looked up, it was the tall guy.
"I already paid, you coming?" Tall Guy asked Dean
"Kat, this is my brother Sam." Dean said
"Nice to meet you Sam," Kat said brightly "Dean and I were going to shoot some pool, want to come?"
"No, thank for the invitation but I'm tired." Sam said
"See ya Sammy." Dean said with a wink.
"I'll be right back, I'm going to go change out of these work clothes and then we'll go" Kat said
"Okay, I'll wait." Dean said.
Kat grabbed her bag and went into the ladies' room.
She shut herself in a stall and changed out of her work uniform and she put on a gray tank top, tied a red and black plaid shirt over it, jeggings and ankle boots. She quickly brushed her hair and put her uniform into her bag. Once she was out of the stall, she swished some mouthwash around in her mouth and spit it out. She sprayed on some perfume and checked in the mirror, she looked good. After taking a deep breath, she grabbed her bag and left the bathroom. She found Dean right where she'd left him and asked
"Ready to go?"
He turned around he smiled
"Sure am." and got up. Kat looked over her shoulder to see Julie mouthing "call me later!" At her. Kat stifled a laugh and followed behind Dean.
Dean and Kat wandered across the road to a pool hall. When they walked in, there were a good amount of people at the bar, a few of the bartenders greeted Kat. She waved back and then they found an empty pool table. Dean walked up to the bar and said to one of the bartenders, a large, barrel chested man with a salt a pepper crew cut, a thick, black mustache and eyebrows that matched the mustache.
“A beer for me, and whatever she normally has.” motioning to Kat.
“You're in luck,” the bartender said “she normally has beer too. We'll bring it out.”
“Thank you.” Dean said and walked back over to Kat who had set her purse and jacket at one of the high top tables.
"I'm going to warn you, I'm really good at this." Kat said as she grabbed her stick.
"So am I." Dean said as he racked up the balls.
"How about a friendly wager?" Kat asked and Dean raised his eyebrow.
"What did you have in mind?" He asked, taking his beer as the bartender brought it over.
"Ten bucks from both of us, winner take all." Kat said, grabbing her beer.
"Anything else?" He asked, taking a sip from his bottle
"Possibly." Kat said with a mischievous grin, and took a few big gulps of beer.
"You're on." Dean said and grabbed a ten out of his wallet. Kat counted out ten dollars from her tips and put it on the table.
"You want to break?" Dean asked
"Sure." Kat said and grabbed the white ball. Dean moved the triangle away from the balls and Kat broke them up, the red solid ball going into a corner pocket. "I'm solids." she said.
"Okay, just shoot." Dean said playfully
"You're not getting worried, are you?" Kat asked
Dean shook his head
"Not at all."
Kat set up her shot and sank a solid green ball into the side pocket. Dean watched as she moved efficiently around the pool table; each of her steps seemed more like she was gliding rather than walking. She had and easy grace in her movements; from the way her hips swayed, to how nimbly she moved the pool stick in her hands. She aimed for the solid yellow one but missed.
"Your turn." Kat said and moved away. Dean took his shot and sunk it in effortlessly.
The game went back and forth pretty quickly and Dean hadn't lied, it was REALLY good. She studied him as he moved; he was easily six feet tall, he had freckles spread across his face, long eyelashes and sinfully full lips. The feature she was most interested in, however, were his eyes. They seemed to change from a bright green to a golden green. He lined up a particularly difficult shot, biting his bottom lip as he concentrated.
“Jesus fucking Christ.” she thought
“There’s no way you’re making that.” she said
He looked up and gave her a panty melting, devilish smirk.
“Oh ye of little faith.” he quipped.
Julia had been right, it had been a long time since she’d been laid. He seemed to be into her, otherwise he wouldn’t be here. He was undoubtedly hot; sex on bowed legs if she was perfectly honest with herself. He wasn’t wearing a ring, he flirted with her like he was unattached. She watched as he took the shot and made it, her mouth dropped open and he said
“What can I say? I’m good.” with a cocky grin.
“Yeah, yeah hot shot.” she said, faking annoyance but she was secretly impressed. The game went on as did the flirting between Dean and Kat, she made a particularly difficult shot and he said
“Damn, you ARE good! You're giving me a run for my money!”
She held the pool stick in one hand and twirled a piece of loose hair between the fingers of her other hand.
“I TOLD you I was good.” she insisted as he moved closer to her.
“Yeah, but when most people say that,” he said, standing inches from her, she could feel his body heat and smell his cologne “they're bluffing.”
She looked up at him with a small grin playing on her lips
“MOST being the operative word.” she challenged, still twirling the end of her hair between her fingers. He smiled, his tongue barely grazing over his bottom lip.
“Yeah, you're right.” he said and walked past her, his the finger tips of his free hand, brushing the back of her hand that was holding the pool stick. Her cheeks flushed pink as she made a half turn, his back was to her. She noted that he had strong, broad shoulders and briefly wondered if the freckles on his face also dotted his shoulders. He turned to the side and she got a good, long look at his backside as he bent over the table to take his shot.
“Good lord.” she mumbled to herself. In that moment, she knew she was in trouble.
They ordered more beer and Kat was starting to lose. Disgruntled and a little tipsy, she concentrated on making her next shot, biting her lower lip. She heard him audibly sigh and she looked up. He had an intensely sexual look on his face and she smiled at him.
“If you take a picture handsome, it'll last longer.” she told him and he laughed as she took her shot and missed. “God damn it!” she yelled and he sauntered over to take his shot.
“Tough luck there princess.” He teased
“I'm no princess,” she quipped “I'm the queen; I got my shit handled.”
He chuckled, took his shot and sank it easily.
The song on the piped in music switched to one that had been popular when she was in high school. It had a stupidly catchy beat and in her inebriated state, she started to move her hips and head as she moved around the table, watching line up his next shot. However, he was distracted by her dancing, she could certainly move.
“You gonna take your shot or what?” she teased and he gave her a full grin as he walked over to her and got close, his fingers barely brushing her hip.
“Quit shaking your ass and I might be able to.” He said
She smiled and bit her lip
“Nah, I'm not gonna do that.” She said
“Well then we have a problem,” he said “I can't take my shot, you won't quit dancing and you're distracting me.”
She raised her eyebrows and shrugged
“Oh, how ever could we solve THAT problem?” she asked, giving him a suggestive grin.
“I'm not sure, any ideas?” he asked
She was sure he had PLENTY of ideas in that mind of his, but he may have been trying to feel her out to make sure they were on the same page.
"How about we up the stakes on this game?" She asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Oh?" He asked as she moved closer
"If I win, we play another round. Double or nothing." Kat said, half sitting on the pool table
"If I win?" He asked
Her heart pounded, liquid courage pumping through her veins. The sexual tension between them was palpable.
"That's up to you." she said and bit her lip
“Oh fuck.” he thought, every dirty thought he'd had about her all evening bubbled to the surface. It was now or never.
"If I win, we get out of here." he said
“SCORE!” She thought
Kat pretended to mull this over
"Okay." she said
"You're on." he said
"Good luck." she said, standing up right
He lined up his shot again and she waited. He took it and missed. He hung his head in defeat and she laughed
"Aw, nice try!" She exclaimed as he moved away
"Yeah, yeah." he said, mentally kicking himself. He'd officially blown it with her.
Kat lined up her shot and sunk in her last ball. She looked up at him, smiling and he was giving her a flirtatious smirk.
"Okay, double or nothing right?" He asked, reaching for his wallet.
"I changed my mind," she said and he looked at her as she set her pool stick aside and walked over to him. "Keep your money, let's get out of here."
"We'll get out of here but you won fair and square." he said and handed her the cash.
"Nah, keep your money,” she said “I had to entice you to play me some how.”
“Well, you could've just asked.” he said, grabbing the ten he had laid out
“Honestly, where's your sense of adventure?” she asked him and he laughed. She loved how his eyes crinkled up when he laughed. Deciding to have some fun, and also to see if this guy was worth his salt she said “Though before we go,” as she grabbed her jacket and purse. He looked at her “there’s something you should probably know about me” she added
“What’s that?” He asked, looking amused and curious at the same time.
She bit her lip, looked down at her shoes and then back up at him
“I’m a virgin.” she said with a shy look on her face. He cocked his head to the side
“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say to that,” he said “I could go cheesy and say “oh I’ll fix that” or some other bullshit.”
Her face broke into a grin and she laughed “Oh my god, I’m kidding!” She exclaimed “I almost couldn’t keep a straight face!”
Realization crossed his face and he started laughing
“You’re fucking with me!” He shouted as he laid down his pool stick and they left the bar. He was pleasantly surprised, most women were either on their best behavior or throwing themselves at him, this one was laughing and joking like they were old friends and flirting with him like crazy. He was into it.
Once they were outside, she said
“Well yeah, what fun is it if you can’t mess with someone?”
He shrugged
“You have a point there, you almost had me.” He said
“And what if I was?” She asked him
He gave her another shrug
“I’d say if you were up for it, okay, cool. We’ll go. If you weren’t, again, cool. Whatever.” He said
Kat smiled and said
"I'm just around the corner from here."
"Lead the way." he said and they set off.
After walking about half a block, they came to a small apartment building and Kat said
"Here we are."
They walked up the flight of stairs and to the end of the hallway where Kat fished her keys out of her pocket. She unlocked the door to apartment number 8 and they walked in. She turned on the kitchen light. He shut the door behind them and Kat dropped her purse and jacket on the table. They looked at each other for a split second and then she closed the gap between them.
"Well now what?" She asked
"I think we're on the same page." he said, tentatively stretching his hands out toward her. She nodded and he put his hands on her hips. She stood on her tip toes and kissed him. The full lips she’d been fantasizing about for the last two hours were warm and soft of hers as her arms traveled up his and rested on his shoulders. He opened his mouth and kissed her again, firmer this time. Without warning, he picked her up wrapping her legs around his waist, kissing her over and over again. She ran her hands through his hair as her lips met his.
"Straight back." she told him as he carried her out of the kitchen and into her dark bedroom. He kicked the door shut with his foot and sat her on the bed. The bedroom was bathed in light coming from the street lamp outside. She made quick work of unbuttoning his shirt while he reached down and untied the knot her shirt was in. She shrugged out of it and he tossed it aside. She pushed the shirt off his shoulders and revealed a black shirt under the plaid. He pulled the black shirt off and revealed his bare chest. On his chest was a tattoo that looked like a pentagram with sun rays around it and she gasped.
"What?" He asked
She stared wide eyed at him
"Why do you have an anti-possession tattoo?" She asked
His face went from lust filled to serious
"What?" He asked
"Are you a hunter?" Kat asked, still staring at his tattoo.
"What do you know about hunters?" he asked and backed away from her. Kat stood up and turned around, moving her hair off of her shoulder to show off her back.
She had the same symbol tattooed on her shoulder blade.
"I'm one too." she said when she turned around "Who are you, really?"
"Dean is my real name," He said "My last name is Winchester"
She stared at him, her mouth agape. The Winchester name was a well known in the hunting community, they were practically legends. She'd heard countless stories about them, but when it came to Dean, the stories were from female hunters and usually included the phrase “best night of my life” somewhere in there. She pushed those stories out of her mind and asked
"YOU'RE Dean Winchester? Didn't you die a few years ago?”
He laughed
“Yeah, didn't really stick.” he answered, a flash of something dark crossed his expression before he gave her another heart stopping grin.
“So, now what?" she asked
Dean blinked and asked
"I don't know, are we still doing this or?"
Kat laughed
"Yeah, we definitely are." she said, she knew she would kick herself forever if she let the sex god get away without seeing if he lived up to the hype.
"Awesome." he said and closed the gap between them, taking her face in his hands and kissing her.
She laid back on the bed, pulling him on top of her as he kissed her over and over again. His lips worked their way down her jaw and neck. He kissed his way up to her ear and then asked
"What do you like?"
Her eyes went wide.
"What?" She asked. He pulled back, repeated the question and she asked "Wait, you actually CARE about what I like?"
He looked confused
"Um, yeah?" He asked, not sure where she was going with that and he told her so.
"No, I'm just surprised," she said "It's much appreciated"
"So, what do you like?" He asked his finger tracing her cheek. Proper brain function has ceased for half a second, the feeling of those rough hands on her face made her wonder what else he could do with them. Getting her mind out of the gutter, she spoke
"Um, I mean I like being on top and bottom. Nothing super rough." She managed to say
"What about going down?" He asked
"Giving or receiving?" She asked
"Both." he said
"Neither is my cup of tea." she said, suddenly uneasy.
"Neither? Really?" He asked, surprised.
"No offense, but most guys have no clue what they're doing when they get down there, then I'm left staring at my watch or the ceiling," She told him “And I have issues with going down on guys, that I'd rather not get into at this moment.”
"Mind if I try on you?" He asked "Worse case, if you start looking at your watch, just say so and we'll do something else. You don't have to worry about reciprocating. It's nice, I don't expect it though.”
Jesus Christ, so far he WAS living up to the hype.
"Okay." she said and kissed him.
“Holy shit.” she thought as he kissed his way down her body. She pulled her shoes and socks off and then pulled off her jeggings, casting them aside. He admired her thick, creamy thighs as he bit his lip. She slowly pulled her panties off, throwing them aside. She scooted up the bed so that she was laying against the pillows, her legs bent at the knee. He crawled across the bed, sat up on his knees and parted her legs. He picked one leg up and kissed from her inner knee, to her inner thigh, her leg going over his shoulder as he lowered himself down, kissing to the apex of her thighs, her knees going weak. He threw her other leg over his shoulder as a chill ran up her spine. She drew a shaky breath as she felt his mouth close over her wet hole, as if he was kissing her there. She inhaled sharply, feeling his tongue move in slow circles inside her, making her eyes go wide; the intensity surprising her.
"Ohhhh!" she moaned out, the delicious sensation, washing over her. He flicked his tongue over and over on her, making her cry out, his fingertips pressing into her thighs. He swirled his tongue around faster, her hips rocking against him.
“You taste good,” he told her as he lapped up her taste “so sweet.”
"Mhhhh," she cried out, biting her lip. "Yes, yes, oh god!" she moaned out, his tongue going from her entrance up to her clit, zig zagging it as he did so. She cried out again, her head practically spinning.
"Dean!" she managed to choke out
He picked his head up "You good?” he asked
Something, again, no one had ever cared enough to make sure of. Her eyes met his and she nodded. Satisfied, he dipped his head back and her mouth dropped open.
"There's NO way this is an act," she thought, his tongue going back to work on her "Either that, or it is and this guy deserves an Academy Award."
His tongue went from side to side, she felt his hand slide up her thigh, his fingers gently touching her clit while he moved his tongue. Kat tilted her head back, moaning as heat rolled over her body. She cried out and arched her back, gripping the pillow by her head.
"I'm gonna-" she couldn't finish the sentence, the intensity of his touch and tongue overwhelmed her and she cried out again, the tense passion in her lower abdomen coming undone as she let go. He picked his head up as she breathed hard, her nerves humming loudly.
"Oh my god!" she said and her eyes met his, he was smirking.
"I'm not done with you yet." he said and unzipped his pants. She stifled a giggle of excitement, if he could do that with his mouth, God only knew what he could do with the rest of his body. He kicked off his boots, pants and boxer briefs as he kissed his way back up her body, his hard member grazing her inner thigh. Their lips met and she spread her legs open. He tentatively pushed just inside of her, his tongue meeting hers. He gently moved his hips back and forth, pushing further into her as he went. She moaned against his mouth, her hands moving up his arms, to his shoulders and finally meeting behind his head. He pushed all the way in her, filling her and she slipped her tongue in his mouth. He moved his hips back and forth at a steady pace inside her as her fingers tangled in his thick hair she'd wanted to grab since she laid eyes on him. He moaned against her mouth as she hooked her leg around his hips and rolled, bringing her on top of him. If he was going to show off, so would she. She let her hands slide up and down his bare chest and stomach, grazing over every defined muscle as she rocked her hips back and forth on top of him. His hands slid up her thighs, coming to a rest on her hips as he tilted his head back with a sigh. She moved her hands over his, getting his attention, as her hands slid up her body. Over her stomach, her breasts and shoulders and she placed her hands in her hair as she moved her hips faster, moaning. She tilted her body back, giving him a good, long look at her. He snapped up, his arms around her, kissing her furiously.
"You're gorgeous." he murmured against her mouth. She responded by kissing him hard, her hands sliding from his chest to the back of his neck. His hands roamed from her hips to the small of her back. He laid them flat, pressing her all the way down on him as she let out a whimper. She placed her knees firmly on the bed, on either side of his hips, raising her body up and pressing her chest into his. He slid his hands down and cupped her behind in his hands. He noted it was the perfect balance between firm and soft as he pressed his fingertips into her flesh. Her lips left his mouth and she kissed down his jaw line and neck as she pressed and pulled her hips into him. She kissed down his neck and shoulders, noting she was right about the freckles on his shoulders and grazed his flesh with her teeth. He let out a growl and rolled her on to her back, throwing one of her legs over his shoulder. From this position, it was impossible for her to hold on any more. She warned him as much as she could and he gently kissed her chest.
"Come" he said
"Jesus H. Christ" she thought
With that, she let go again, the shock waves reverberated through her body as she cried out in a tone she didn't recognize has her own. He moaned, letting go inside her. When he was done, he rolled off of her and laid beside her as they caught their breath. Kat couldn't decide if it was because it had been so long or because it was THAT good, but she felt like she had gotten some kind of sexual achievement.
She grinned stupidly as she looked at him, he was grinning too.
"You're good." she told him
"So are you," he said "Like, really good"
They caught their breath and she asked
"You want a beer or something?"
"Sure." he said
She got up and pulled on a fresh pair of panties and a long sleeved shirt she slept in and went to go retrieve beer from her fridge.
When she got back, Dean had pulled on his shirt and underwear, they sat on her bed, his back against the headboard and her sitting cross legged beside him.
"So, you're a hunter?" He asked, his fingers running over the back of her hand.
"I'm semi-retired,” she told him "My parents were hunters, I didn't realize what they actually did until I was five or six. They told me they were traveling sales people so I spent a lot of time with my parents' friends, who were retired hunters."
"So, what happened?" Dean asked, his fingers stopping.
"My parents were killed by demons," she told him "the demons kidnapped me and my parents fell right into a trap to get me back."
Dean stared as Kat recalled the details.
"They tortured my parents and made me watch." she told him.
"No." Dean said, shocked
Kat nodded
“They were done so they left me tied to a chair in an abandoned warehouse with my dead parents. Security guards found me a few hours later because someone had reported screaming from inside. They called it a double murder and kidnapping, but I knew what happened. I couldn't tell anyone, but I knew. In the back of that police car, I swore revenge. I'd track down the demons that killed my parents and I'd avenge my parent's death. Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe, know what I mean?”
"But I'm guessing that didn't go as planned" Dean said
"No, not right away." She said and rolled on to her back, her head turned toward him. "My parents were killed when I was eight, all of my close relatives are dead and I don't have any siblings so I was put in the care of my third cousins in Tulsa, Oklahoma. So I moved out there and," she paused and searched for the right words
"And what?" Dean asked
"Things took a pretty quick nosedive," she said "I can't put it any more gently than that."
"What happened?" Dean asked
"Well, it turns out that Aunt Chloe and Uncle Kevin, that's what they told me to call them, only took me in so they could collect more government assistance and were heavy drug users. Any money they got was blown on drugs.” She bit her lip and looked back at him, his face unreadable. It looked like a mixture of rage and something else she couldn't understand; pity maybe?
"Everything I went through; the nights I went to bed cold and hungry, the teasing I got from other kids, every forgotten birthday, all I could think about was one day I would become a hunter and kill the demons that had landed me here. I saved up every bit of pocket money I could scrounge up or hide from Chloe and Kevin. I had a teacher, Mrs. Morris, that helped me get in contact with some hunters and I found a couple, Shannon and Dave, that knew my parents and they offered to take me in and teach me hunting. When I turned eighteen, I packed what few things I had, ran away and never looked back. While Shannon and Dave were teaching me to hunt, I earned my keep by helping them out at a bar they owned and helping on cases."
"Did you ever find the demons that killed your parents?" Dean asked
"After thirteen years of searching and killing a hell of a lot of other things along the way, yes I did. Once I killed them, I didn't feel like I needed to do anything else. So, I threw a dart at a map, it landed on Waco, Texas and that's why I'm here now. If a case comes up near by, I'll take it, but I don't leave for very long if I can help it.”
“Why's that?” Dean asked
“I made a life here,” she said “I wanted to get back to the normal I remembered from being a kid.”
Dean sensed a coldness in her words; like she was projecting an image of herself. Something was blocking him from her.
“Reasonable” Dean said with a shrug, deciding to put that thought aside.
"What happened to you?" She asked, seeing something poking out of his shirt sleeve
"What're you talking about?" He asked
"Right here." she asked and touched his shoulder, he rolled the sleeve up; there was an old hand print shaped scar on his shoulder.
"Touched by an angel." he said
"What?" She asked, shocked
"No seriously," he said "Long story."
"Hey, I just spilled my guts here" she said teasingly "I'm kidding, you don't have to tell me anything.”
"It's not something I really like to talk about, but considering what you went though, I guess we had somewhat similar experiences," he said and she looked at him "I went to hell."
"Literally Hell?" She asked and he nodded
"Got my soul ripped out by hell hounds and everything. Nasty business. Anyway, an angel, Castiel, grabbed me by the shoulder and brought me back from Hell." he said.
"What does one DO in hell?" She asked
He mulled it over
"Depends on the person I guess." he said
"Okay, what did YOU do while you were in hell?" She asked
He shook his head, he wasn't talking about that with a stranger.
"I can understand." she said. Something about him made her want to tell him everything; she didn't realize how badly she wanted to tell someone that would understand, but she bit her tongue.
Good time? Sure. Dr. Phil session? Nope. Not happening.
He smirked and she looked at the clock on her bedside table.
"I hate to be a party pooper, but I have a double shift tomorrow. Otherwise I'd suggest you sleep over." she said
"I doubt there'd be much sleeping." he said, a mischievous grin on his face.
"You ain't lying about that," she said with a laugh as she got up "At least let me give you a ride back to your motel."
"You don't have to." he said and finished his beer
"A pair of hunters are in town and you think I'm going to let you walk back in the dark?" She asked as she pulled her clothes back on "You must think I'm an idiot or something."
"Far from it, actually." he said and got dressed.
They walked outside and went around to the back of the apartment building where the parking lot was located.
"Which one is yours?" Dean asked, scanning the vehicles
"That one." she said and nodded to an old model Mustang.
"Holy shit." Dean said as they walked over to it and she laughed
"This is MY baby." she told him, admiring her car's black and chrome exterior.
"Oh, she's a beauty," he said and looked the car over "what is this, a 66?"
"Close," she said and unlocked the doors "she's a '67."
He let out a low whistle
"Same year as my car. What 'cha got under the hood?" He asked as he climbed in
"A 302 V8," she said and cranked the car up. She revved the engine and a huge grin spread across his face. "You have a 67 too?" She asked
"A 67 Chevy Impala," he told her "Damn, she's got some giddy up." he said
"Oh, you have NO idea," she said and put the car in gear "A 67 Impala? This I have to see."
"Where'd you find her?" He asked
"On a hunt with Dave," she said as they took off "We helped this guy take out a pack of werewolves and it was my birthday, so he gave Dave a REALLY good deal on it and we fixed it up."
"How long did it take?" Dean asked as they took off into the night
"Like two years," she said "We worked on it between cases and had to find all the parts. She was a V6, but we upgraded her to a V8."
"Good choice." he said, admiring the pristine interior.
He told her which motel he and Sam were staying at and she pulled into the parking lot.
"Right there, that's my car." he said, pointing to it.
"Jesus H. Christ" she said as she pulled up next to it
"That's my Baby." he said and her mouth dropped open.
"Oh my god." Kat said as she cut off the Mustang and climbed out of it "Oh, she's GORGEOUS" she said, admiring the Impala. She was an 18-foot bad ass and Kat fell in love instantly "Okay, so what do YOU have under the hood?" She asked
"502 big block." he said
"V8?" She asked
He snorted
"Of course." he said and she grinned
"Now you have to crank her up, I want to hear this beast." she said and he smiled
"Hold on, my brother has the keys." he said and went into the motel room, leaving the door open. He came back a few seconds later, with Sam right behind him.
"Nice Mustang." Sam commented as Dean unlocked the driver's side of the Impala.
"Thanks," Kat said "This is my baby" she patted the Mustang fondly
Sam chuckled
"Well this is his baby." he said, nodding to the Impala as Dean cranked her up and revved the engine.
"DAMN, that's loud!" Kat said and Dean grinned
"That's my girl!" He said and cut the engine off
"Excuse me while I try not to drool on your car." she said as he climbed out and shut the door
"No shame." Dean said
"Well, thanks for showing off your baby," Kat said "if you guys need help, you know where to find me"
Sam's widened eyes darted from Dean to Kat and back again
"Relax," Dean said "She's a hunter too."
Sam relaxed and went back inside as Dean stepped closer to Kat
"If I want to see you again before I leave, can I find you at work?" He asked
"Or I could just give you my number." she said
"Works for me." he said
She grabbed a pen out of her purse, took his hand and wrote her number on his palm. Her eyes lingered on his hand for a few seconds longer than they probably should have, remembering how they'd worked magic on her, making her blush. She wrote her name and drew a quick smiley face next to it.
"Cute." he commented
"Just so you don't forget." she said with a smile.
"Not likely." he said
They quickly kissed and then she left. While driving back to her apartment; she texted Julie.
"I'm telling you Sammy, she's PERFECT." Dean said, it was the next day and they were taking a break from researching their case to get something to eat. Wanting to see Kat again, Dean had coaxed Sam into going back to the diner.
"The girl or the car?" Sam asked
"Yes," Dean said "And yes."
"Dean, you just met her, how do you know she's perfect?" Sam asked.
They went into the diner and asked to sit in Kat's section. Kat herself, was busy behind the bar, pouring an older gentleman a cup of coffee. The hostess that had seated them went over to Kat and made her aware her section had been sat. Kat looked up and saw them sitting there. Dean's eyes met hers and her cheeks went a rosy pink.
"God, she is so cute." Dean said, looking at her
"You're going to make me barf and I haven't eaten since this morning." Sam said and looked at the menu.
Kat came over to their table and greeted them warmly as she set silverware and napkins down for them. Today she had her hair up in a bun and was wearing pretty pink lipstick.
"Jose, one of our chefs, is trying out a special chili recipe." She told Dean
"What's in it?" Dean asked
"He calls it Meat Eater Chili; ground beef, bacon and smoked sausage with black beans and onions and a LITTLE chili powder for some kick," she told Dean "Served with a choice of cornbread or Texas toast."
Dean was nearly drooling
"I'll take ALL of the chili you have. I mean all of it, with cornbread." Dean said
“Do you have anything that won't put me in an early grave?” Sam teased and Kat laughed
"We have chicken that we marinate in white wine and Italian spices. You can have it on a sandwich, in a salad, grilled or whatever." she told him
"That sounds amazing" Sam said "I'll take the chicken on a salad, grilled please.”
"What's your side? We have sweet potato fries on special this week" Kat told him
"That sounds really good, thanks Kat." Sam said
"I'll be right back." she said, she winked at Dean and walked away.
Dean looked at his brother with a Cheshire Cat grin on his face and Sam said
"Yeah, she's good."
When she brought over their food, she set it in front of them and said
"Jose wants to know how the chili is, do you guys want anything else?"
"More water please." Sam said
"Coming right up." she said and went to grab the water pitcher. They dug into their food and when Kat came back, they had practically devoured everything. She laughed as she refilled their water glasses and asked
"Everything good here?"
They looked up and nodded, their mouths full of food.
"Good, you two enjoy, I'll be right back" she said and went over to check on her other table. She greeted them just as warmly and smiled at a little boy in the booth down the way from them.
Dean swallowed and said
"See? And she's THAT NICE, all the time."
"How?" Sam asked
Dean shrugged
"Dude, I don't know. She just is." he said
Sam watched as she waved at the little boy who looked really excited to see her.
"Don't look now, but I think you have some competition." Sam said and nodded to the little boy. Dean turned and saw him waving and smiling at Kat.
"Hey Jonah, we're you having today?" She asked him with a grin.
Dean turned back and said
"I better up my game." sarcastically
Sam rolled his eyes
"You might lose to the better man, he has that smiling and waving thing down."
"Shut up Sam." Dean said and finished off his chili.
After they ate, Sam and Dean met Kat at the register.
"Jose!" Kat called and Jose stuck his head out of the kitchen "This is special agent Steven Tyler and his partner Joe Perry. Steven is the guy that ordered the chili."
Jose wandered out of the kitchen and Dean said
"It was phenomenal"
"Thank you!" Jose said "I worked on it for two weeks to get it just right."
"It was amazing!" Dean said as he handed Kat his card.
"Thanks again, glad you guys enjoyed it." Jose said and then went back into the kitchen.
"Who came up with the idea for the chicken?" Sam asked as Kat swiped Dean's card and waited for the receipt to print.
"That was me," Kat said "I tried it at home and the guy that owns the place did too so that's when he decided to let us pitch our food ideas and that's how we keep a rotating menu." the receipt printed and she handed it to Dean for him to sign.
"I might need some more of that chicken before we leave town." Sam said
"Who are you telling? We're coming back for chili." Dean said and signed the receipt and slid Kat some cash for her tip.
"So, can we borrow you for a second?" Sam asked "We need to ask you some questions about the case."
Kat looked at the clock on the wall
"I take my break in like forty-five minutes, does that work?"
"Go ahead Kit Kat, I'll cover." one of the other waitresses, Tanya, said from across the bar.
"Or I could go now" Kat said with a laugh "Thanks Tea."
They went outside and stood over by the Impala
"We think it's a wendigo." Sam said
Kat made a face
"Wendigos are a pain in the ass to hunt." she said
"Yeah and they only come out at night, so that's where our problem is." Dean said
"We think it's holed up in the woods near where those campers went missing," Sam said "Do you know if there's any place where a wendigo could hide?"
Kat thought and said
"Yeah, there's some mine shafts out near this old farm, they've both been abandoned for like ever so maybe that's where it is."
"Can you show us on a map?" Sam said and pulled out his phone. He found a map of the area and Kat looked at it, scanning it and then she said
"Yeah, it's right here," she said and zoomed in on an area about ten miles up the road. "Near mile marker 323, the local teenagers like to go out there and get the wits scared out of them because the property is haunted. Allegedly." She said with a shrug "I've checked, there's no EMF, but I never thought to look for a wendigo."
"Well then that's where we'll start tonight." Sam said
"You guys want an extra set of hands?" Kat asked
"We'll call you if we need you." Dean said and then he glanced at Sam.
"Yeah, I'm just gonna go make a couple of calls." Sam said with a look at Dean and he walked away.
"Can I help you Special Agent Tyler?" Kat asked sarcastically.
"So, what's my competition like in there?" Dean asked playfully, nodding to the little boy who was looking out the window at Kat.
Kat laughed
"Oh Jonah? I don't know, he's pretty tough. He knows all his shapes and colors. He even knows the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song." she said
"Damn, all I got is Sesame Street." Dean said
"I didn't figure you for a Sesame Street kinda kid." Kat said
"I wasn't but Sam was" Dean said, smiling "See you later tonight?" He asked
"Definitely." she said and raised her eyebrows with a suggestive smirk on her face.
That night after her double was over, Kat was taking out the garbage before she left. She stepped outside the diner and walked over to the dumpsters. She shoved the bag into the dumpster and heard the engine of the Impala pull up. She turned and saw Dean climbing out.
"Hey stranger!" She shouted to him.
He turned, saw her and smiled. She started to walk toward him when the expression on his face changed from excited to worried in a split second.
"KAT, behind you!" He yelled and started running toward her. Kat turned and was met with a piece of wood to the head. She hit the ground like a sack of potatoes, out cold. Dean raised his gun to the guy that hit her and said "Don't move!"
"Or what?" The guy taunted
Before Dean could respond, he got whacked on the back of the head and he fell to the ground, also out cold.
"Guess we'll never know." the woman that had hit him over the head said, smiling at the guy.
Kat's head snapped up, her shoulders, ankles and hands tied firmly to the chair she was sitting on.
"Kat?" Came Dean's voice from behind her
"Yeah?" She asked with a moan
"You're awake." he said
She blinked a couple of times trying to get her vision to correct itself and then felt around as best as she could but couldn't feel the knots. She wriggled her feet and asked
“Any progress over there?”
“Working on it.” Dean said
The door a few feet away suddenly opened and they turned their heads to see the couple that had attacked them earlier. When they got closer, Dean and Kat could see their black eyes.
"Well, well, well" the man said and walked over to them, the woman not far behind him "If it isn't Hell's biggest pain in the ass and Dean Winchester"
Kat laughed
"My reputation precedes me," she said "and who the hell are you?"
"Who we are isn't any of your business." the woman snapped.
"Manners Emma," the man said to her and he made his way closer to Kat "You are a hard woman to find." he said and bent his knees so that he was eye level with her "Remember how you slaughtered a couple of demons three years ago?"
"Hard to say," Kat said "I've killed a lot of demons."
"Two very special ones," the man said "They may or may not have had something to do with your parent's murder."
"Oh yeah, I remember now," Kat said "I did do that."
The man sighed
"Well you see, those were two of my best demons and you, a tiny girl, managed to get rid of both of them and I can't say that makes me very happy."
"That's too bad," Kat said as she felt Dean's hands moving frantically to untie the knots "I did what I did with pride and I'd do it again."
"You're going to wish you hadn't said that." the man said and backhanded her across the face.
"Pick on someone your own size you black eyed son of a bitch!" Dean shouted after hearing the slap. Kat recovered quickly and turned her face to the demon's, a welt forming on her cheek.
"You hit like a bitch." Kat said
Emma sauntered over to Dean and looked him in the face.
"Aw, he's sweet on her Edward." she said
"Maybe we'll just torture him and make her watch, just like we did with poor Mommy and Daddy." Edward suggested. Kat felt the rope drop and Dean said
"Good luck with that." then he and Kat head butted the demons sending them stumbling backward. Dean grabbed a knife out of his boot and cut the ropes around his ankles. In doing so, Kat's ropes came loose and she got up and started swinging at Edward. From behind her, Kat heard Emma scream as Edward pushed Kat to the ground. She whacked her head on the concrete and before she could process the hit, she saw Dean's boots appear and heard a splash as Edward screamed. Dean reached down, helped her up and they ran as two clouds of black smoke followed them out of the warehouse and disappeared into the night.
"I know where we are, the road is this way." Kat said and they took a left outside of the warehouse.
"Do you still have your phone?" Dean asked, searching his pockets.
Kat patted herself down.
"No, it's gone" she said, not finding her phone.
"Sam's going to come looking." Dean said
"Hopefully we'll meet up with him before those demons come back. What'd you hit them with anyway?" She asked as they walked toward the road
"Holy water." Dean said and showed her his flask.
"Nice." she said
"Oh, hey you're bleeding." he said and made her stop. He took her chin in his fingers and turned her cheek to the street light to get a better look.
"I've had worse." she said
His mouth set in a hard line
"Dean," she started
"Don't" he cut her off "You shouldn't take a hit.”
"Not like I TOLD him to hit me." she said
"That doesn't mean you should, especially not for me." he told her and let her go. They started walking again, this time in silence.
"You okay?" He asked after a few minutes
"I'm fine," she said, in a clipped tone "There's a gas station about two miles that way" she said as they approached the end of the road and she pointed to the right "I know the guy that works the night shift, he'll let us use the phone so we can get a hold of Sam."
"Lead the way." Dean said and they started walking. They walked in silence for a few minutes, the only sounds being their feet crunching the dirt and a breeze blowing through the trees. Kat shivered as they walked and Dean said
"Here, take this" and took off his jacket and handed it to her.
"I'm fine,” she insisted “nothing a warm bath won't fix.”
“We're a long way from a bath,” Dean pointed out “just take the jacket.”
“I'm. Fine.” she insisted and he gently grabbed her elbow. He studied her face and then asked
“Why won't you take my jacket?”
“One, it's not THAT cold out,” she lied, she was freezing but she wasn't about to let him notice “and two, I can handle it okay?”
Dean gave her a curious look and then asked
“You don't want to let anyone help do you?”
“I'm not answering that.” she said simply.
“I'm not demanding an explanation,” he told her “just making an observation.”
Kat opened her mouth to speak; they heard a horn beep and looked up.
"I know that sound." Dean said as his Impala rolled up beside them. Kat got in the backseat and Sam scooted over to the passenger seat so Dean could drive. Once they drove down the road and explained to Sam what happened, Sam asked
"So we have a wendigo AND demons?"
"Never a dull moment in Waco I guess." Kat said with a shrug.
"What should we do?" Sam asked
"Gank 'em all" Dean said "Those demons are mine."
"I can help," Kat said "I have all my stuff at my apartment."
Sam looked from her to Dean and back again as Dean clenched his jaw.
"Maybe that isn't a good idea" Sam said
"What? Three creatures, three hunters. Pretty easy math to me" Kat asked and Sam smirked.
"We can handle it." Dean said
"You don't get to make all the decisions," Kat said "I'm helping, you can just deal with it."
Once they arrived back at her apartment, Kat cleaned her wound and then grabbed her journal.
"Wendigoes are only killed by fire. Lucky for us I have a solution for that."
"And what would that be?" Dean asked
Kat walked across the room to an armoire that was set against her living room wall. She pushed a button and a keypad flipped down. She punched in a code and they heard the lock click. She opened the door and inside was a treasure trove of hunting gear.
"Hmmm, it's here somewhere, she said, looking around as Sam and Dean stood there in amazement.
"Ah, here it is" she said and pulled out what looked like something out of Ghostbusters. It was a backpack with two cylinders on it that were spray painted black.
"Flame thrower" she said "This bit right there," she said pointing to the parts that would rest against her back "Is made of flame and heat resistant fabric"
"What's it powered by?" Sam asked
"Cheap vodka and lighters" Kat said
"I think I'm in love." Dean said and Kat laughed. “I haven't gotten it working properly just yet, so until then, it's flare guns”. She set the pack aside and grabbed two flare guns out of a drawer.
"Ya'll need anything before I shut this sucker?" she asked
"More holy water." Dean said
"Hold up." Kat said and opened a different drawer. She pulled out two bottles of holy water and handed one to each of them.
"What else do you have in here?" Dean asked
“Koofer dust, dead man's blood, my grimoire, crystals and herbs for spells.” she started
"You can geek out over gear later," Sam said with a roll of his eyes "We've got demons to hunt."
"He's right, you can drool over my gear closet later." Kat said and shut the door. She punched the code in again and the keypad flipped up, blending in with the armoire. Kat grabbed her backpack that was leaning against the armior and they set off.
Once they tracked the wendigo to the woods Kat got out of the Impala and Dean followed her.
"Be careful." he said as he helped her put on her backpack.
"Hey, you do the same." she said, buckling the backpack around her waist.
"Meet is back at the motel in," Dean looked at his watch "Two hours, if you don't show up, I'm coming to look for you."
Kat eyed him
“You won't have to,” she told him “I got this.”
She set off for the woods without looking back at him, feeling a tightness in her chest she wasn't used to.
An hour and half and one dead wendigo later, Kat arrived back at Sam and Dean's motel room, the Impala was nowhere in sight. Kat opened the door to the motel with the extra key Dean had given her and quickly took off her mud coated boots at the door. She unhooked the backpack and set it beside her boots, her back aching from the weight of it. She closed and locked the door behind her and turned on the light. She checked the salt lines around the windows and fixed the one by the door, then she sat at the table to wait for Sam and Dean.
Twenty minutes passed and Kat heard what sounded like the Impala roll up. She quickly peeked out of the window and saw the lights on the black beast of a car cut off and the two boys get out. She waited until they came through the door and rushed over to Dean hugging him tightly. He did the same as Sam shut the door behind them.
"Are you okay?" He asked, looking her over
"Yeah, I'm fine, you?" She asked, checking his face.
"Except for this," he said, showing her a cut on his arm "I'm fine."
"We have to get that cleaned," she said "Sit down."
"I'll take care of it," Dean said
"Sit." Kat demanded and pointed to the chair she'd just been sitting in.
"You okay Sam?" She asked, looking him up and down.
"Got kicked in the chest pretty hard," he said "but I'm fine"
"I have drugs for that." she said and grabbed the backpack she'd been carrying.
"I'm going to take a shower, then I'll take you up on those drugs." he said as he winced and hobbled over to the bathroom. Once the bathroom door was shut, Kat took the bag over to the table and looked at Dean's cut.
"I'll clean this up, I'm not sure if you need stitches or not." she said
"Get the whiskey first" he said and nodded to the counter. Kat quickly grabbed the bottle and handed it to him. She unscrewed the lid and opened her bag. She pulled out what looked like a pee pad for dogs and put it under Dean's arm. She then grabbed gloves, a small bottle of clear liquid and some gauze pads. Once she put the gloves on she soaked the gauze pads in the clear liquid.
"Alcohol?" He asked and took a swig from the bottle
Kat shook her head
"Hydrogen peroxide," she said "I'll dissolve the blood and clean the wound so I can see if you need stitches."
Dean nodded and took another swig from the bottle. She carefully started cleaning the wound, assessing it as she went. Once it was cleaned, she said
"It's not as deep as I thought, you don't need stitches. I'm going to wrap this after you have a shower so it'll stay clean" She reached in the bag again as Sam came out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel.
"How bad is it?" He asked, nodding to Dean
"He'll live." Kat said with a smile as she took off her gloves and tossed them in a pile with the used gauze pads. Sam picked up his clothes and went back into the bathroom. As he shut the door, Kat gathered up the soiled materials and threw them away. She then pulled out a bigger gauze pad and triple antibiotic ointment. Then she pulled out a bottle of big pink pills.
"Are you allergic to any medications?" She asked Dean and he shook his head.
"This is an antibiotic called amoxicillin, take this twice a day for five days to keep the infection away" and handed Dean the bottle.
"You carry antibiotics around with you?" He asked
"I'm prepared," she said as Sam came out of the bathroom "You go take a shower, I'll look at Sam."
Dean nodded and changed places with Sam.
"How do you know all this?" Sam asked
"I had to learn to patch myself up." she said, which wasn't technically a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth either.  "How's your chest?" she asked him
"Hurts" he said
She reached in her bag and handed him a prescription bottle with four white pills in it.
"Here's some painkillers to help you sleep, take one every four to six hours don't mix with alcohol and don't drive when you take it."
"What DON'T you have in that bag?" Sam asked with a laugh
"A flux capacitor, but I'm working on it." she said with a smile.
Later on, after Dean was patched up and Sam was sound asleep, Kat and Dean lay in his bed talking quietly. He had insisted that she stay with them and he'd loaned her a shirt and some shorts to sleep in. They stayed up over half the night in each other's arms, regaling each other with stories; from their lives to hunting stories. Kat noted that when she talked, he didn't stare at her blankly or look at her chest. He actually listened to what she had to say and responded. She told him how she and Dave fixed up her Mustang and he smirked.
"What can't you do?" He asked
"There's a lot I can't do," she said "But I know where my area of expertise is so I use it."
"Thank you for patching us up." he said, tucking a lock of her hair behind her ear.
"You're welcome, happy to help." she said as his finger trailed down her jaw line. He tilted he chin up with his finger and kissed her gently. When their kiss ended she yawned
"Go to sleep." he said and kissed her forehead. She snuggled closer to him, resting her forehead on his chest as his arms folded around her.
The next morning, Kat woke up and saw Dean sitting at the table, drinking coffee.
"Morning sleepyhead" he said with a smile
"Morning handsome" she said with a yawn. She sat up and stretched
"Where's Sam?" She asked
"Getting breakfast." he said as she got up out of bed and came over to him. He scooted his chair back and pulled her into his lap. They wrapped their arms around each other, his forehead pressed into her shoulder as she stroked his mussed hair. She couldn't deny what she felt in her heart; something was different between the two of them.
They separated and looked at one another; his handsome face smiling back at her.
No, she decided. Getting involved with a hunter wasn't worth it.
She gave him a grateful grin and got up
“I'm gonna go change,” she told him “then can you take me home?”
Dean nodded and watched her disappear into the bathroom.
“Fuck.” he swore under his breath.
Here was someone he could see getting to know better, someone he felt like he could trust; but he knew deep down that she didn't trust him. Or anyone else for that matter.
He clicked his tongue in his mouth
“Well, so much for that.” he mumbled
After breakfast, Dean drove Kat back to her apartment in silence. He walked her to the door and when they arrived he said
“Thank you for all your help, I mean it.”
She nodded
“Any time,” she told him “If you guys are local and need help, call me.”
Dean shifted his weight and then asked
“If I'm local and just want to see you, can I?”
She studied his face for a long few seconds, he felt his heart beating in his throat.
“Honestly?” she asked “I don't know.” Dean's heart sank, it showed on his face and she said “What I mean by that is, I know what it's like to be involved with a hunter. I fought for normal and I want to keep that.”
“I'm not asking to go steady,” Dean said, even thought his heart shouted “LIAR!” “just if I'm in the area and you want to get your ass kicked at pool, can I call you?”
She bit her lip as she felt torn. She had a million thoughts race through her head all at once and, out of what seemed like pure instinct, she nodded.
“I'd like that.” she said.
They hugged and he caught one last whiff of her.
“Bye Kat.” he told her and let her go.
She slid her hands up his chest and without any forethought, she stretched up on her tip toes and kissed his cheek.
“Bye Dean.” she said against his skin and then went inside, her heart pounding against her rib cage.

A Tale of Two Cities (Games) - By Sir Charles Dickens (ghost written by DR)
Windsor 16    Higginsville 5
Tumblr media
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (at the Windsor Tournament). After roughing up a beleaguered Green Ridge squad in the first game of the day, the Huskers had the tables turned on them in the 2nd game of the day. Let’s set that aforementioned table, the Huskers (designated as the home team on the scoreboard), squared up Friday against the Windsor Greyhounds for the first time maybe ever (that’s unofficial conjecture). Josiah Golden made another appearance on the hill (which is always a good thing) and looked sharp early, with his velocity on point. He made quick work of the ‘hounds dishing out a scoreless first inning to bring the Huskers in for the bottom half of the frame. Riding a five game winning streak, confidence is pretty swell right now for the boys from Lafayette County, as they would quickly demonstrate.
Tumblr media
A stealth bomber on a mission to destroy Rumsey’s stolen base percentage
Husker leadoff batter Jace Kerley coaxed a base on balls from one half of the Windsor Witherspoon twins to start things up. (Though the ghost writer knows a few peeps from Windsor he does not claim to know where to get any good Amish baked goods). Next up was Mason Rumsey who launched a rocket up the middle for a single. (Kerley over to third base). Rumsey attempted to steal 2nd base soon after, and for the first time in his high school career was caught stealing by an opposing catcher. Perhaps he was distracted by the A-10 Warthog, or B2 Bomber flyover, or perhaps the horse and buggy traffic jam along route 52 nearby. Kerley was able to score on the throw to second. 1-0 Huskers after one inning.
Tumblr media
You better put it on a tee in this game, or it’s not a strike
If you happen to follow Missouri High School athletics semi-closely, you may know that Windsor probably has some pretty decent athletes right now. You don’t win a Class 1 State Football championship, (while encountering a path that went through Skyline and Mid Buck) without kids that have put in a lot of extra blood, sweat, and tears into their athletic endeavors. As the old expression goes; sometimes it’s not the coach with his x’s and o’s, it’s all about the Jimmys and Joes. Flexing on a stout 10-1 record on the season, Windsor would begin to showcase some offensive firepower in the 2nd inning, coupled with the fact that Golden was facing a fairly tight zone in this amateur writer’s humble opinion. The Greyhounds sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning behind three singles, and three free passes that extended Golden’s pitch count exponentially, all told the bred for racing dogs trotted across the plate four times. 4-1 Windsor.
Tumblr media
D.R. showing off his graphic skills
The bottom half of the 2nd inning for the Huskers produced a lone base knock, off the bat of Deuce’s Wild Jackson Kouril. Unfortunately, that was it in that inning. In the top of the 3rd, the Greyhounds (who by the way seemed really fired up for this game, I mean really fired up) would feel the wrath of Golden once again, as #3 looked back to his old form, dispatching the Henry County opponent in efficient manner, in a 1-2-3 inning. A strikeout to start things up, and two ground ball outs to Micah Graham at second base. My wife SR refers to him as, “Where’s Waldo/Micah”, as you never know where he might be playing. In this game the versatile utility player was at second base, filling the spot for an injured Nick Herrera. Despite running into a few objects during the season, he has played catcher, 3rd base , SS, 2nd base, 1st base, and the outfield. He also pitches, and made a brief appearance in this game. He’s like the swiss army knife of Coach Figg’s toolbox. To start the bottom of the 3rd, Where’s Micah would garner a free pass. Three batters later Camden Russell delivered a monster two run shot over left center for his first high school homerun of his young career. The score was 10-3 at this point.
Tumblr media
A rare Cade mound appearance
The top of the 4th is where it began to really unravel for the Blue and Gold. Cade Limback toed the rubber to start the inning, replacing Golden. The rally began innocently enough for the Hounds, with speedy #2 getting on base with a single, although getting greedy, the speedster was put out at 2nd, via a Jace Kerley missile. Meanwhile the next batter (in the 9 hole) was hit by a pitch. 3 walks in a row after that, plus a Windsor Grand Salami, off of another new Husker pitcher, (the first batter he saw), meant the rout was definitely on. After the dust settled it ended up being a six run inning for Windsor. The Huskers were retired in order in the bottom of the 4th and whatever brief glimpse of hope the Husker faithful felt after the Russell bomb earlier was quickly extinguished in another six run barrage in the top of the 5th for the Greyhounds. This included the cleanup batter hitting his 2nd homerun of the game. We shall not dwell on this inning too much.
Tumblr media
This is a public service announcement for any one who may need it (I’m including myself here.) As an old Staff Sergeant used to tell us,  (edited version) “If the shoe fits, {place it in your rear}, if it doesn’t, then don’t {friggin} worry about it.”
Moving along, the Huskers were able to snag a couple runs in their portion of the 5th . Country Boys Can Survive Conner Reynolds laced a single to left field to start the inning. Next, Graham could this time be found on 1st base again, after receiving another walk. Kerley would also gain a free pass to load the bases. Reynolds and Graham both scored later, and the final score was 16-5. Apparently, Windsor felt as though they had something to prove to their guests from up north. The ownership of the Husker Rumble and myself were wondering if there a world series ring on the line after this contest? (Also, do umpires have control of this game)? As I alluded to earlier the Windsor crowd and players were quite jacked up on this day. One dude in the crowd was even granted a free pass to exit the ballpark after he directed some loud talk towards the umps over a play at the plate. There’s something to be said about winning with grace. We can be very proud that our Huskers do this routinely.
Tumblr media
Camden circled the bases faster than I could make the trek back from the parking lot. This is the best that I could do.
Going Deep: Sophomore Camden Russell gave the Huskers some measure of revenge, as he crushed his first career long ball over the left field fence. Of course I was walking to the car to get some rain gear, and missed an excellent photo opportunity.
Box Score: Missing in Action
Up Next: The second day of the Windsor Tourney was mercifully rained out, so next up, Tuesday, May 20th, 4:30 p.m., the Huskers travel to the evil empire to take on the Lexington Minutemen

Albuquerque, Bitch
We crossed into New Mexico right as the sun was setting. A haze of clouds and distant rain created a beautiful diffused light across the sky. By the time night had fallen, the desert crosswinds had picked up, and the beautiful landscape had faded into a black abyss with only the lines in the road to guide us. We managed to get to Albuquerque right around 10 pm. We were more exhausted than the previous nights, most likely because we had tacked three additional hours onto this leg. We pulled up to the Sandia Peak Inn, an adorable, retro, southwestern themed motel. Despite the retro exterior, the room was updated, spacious, and sparkling clean. We decided to order Del Taco from Doordash for a late-night dinner. George had never tried it, and after a long day in the car, it was wonderful to have someone else bring our food to us. God bless those dashers! We had our dinner with Blood and Honey American Ale from Revolver Brewing, a Texas-made craft beer we picked up at a travel stop as we were leaving Texas.
With a much shorter 4 1/2 hour drive to Williams, Arizona on the agenda for the next day, we treated ourselves to a 9 am wake up time. Actually, George slept until 10, but I got up at 9 to work on this blog because I’m determined to keep it up. I could explain in two words why Goerge and I were thrilled to be in Albuquerque: Breaking Bad. George had always gushed about how amazing the show was, claiming it to be the best show he had ever watched. He regularly brought it up, and while I wanted to watch it, I never had time until, of course, 2020. We had binge-watched the entire series during quarantine, and I have to say it really is the best show ever! We had mapped out a path to see some of the locations where it was filmed, and I was just as excited as George was. We grabbed a take-out brunch from Owl Cafe (which, by the way, appears in El Camino, the Breaking Bad movie), where we each got the New Mexico Reuben, a New-Mexican take on the Reuben sandwich; hot corned beef, green chili, Swiss cheese, and 1000 island in a flour tortilla. It was delicious, and I had tears running down my face from the spice.
After brunch, we stopped at a nearby Walmart to get some much-needed windshield wiper fluid, and a few other necessities before heading to visit the White residence. The house was immediately recognizable. A black wrought iron fence surrounds the house, along with parking cones in the street, and signs to inform tourists (like us) that it is a private property. I have to be honest, though I was excited to see the house, I felt incredibly uncomfortable visiting this location. I personally don’t need a sign to tell me to be respectful. Still, the amount of security they had in place said to me that others had stepped onto the property, probably trespassed and attempted to look through the windows, or over the fence into the backyard. I hated to think that just being there put us, as far as the owners were concerned, into that category. We chose not to get out of the car, but instead take a quick picture through the car window.
Our next stop was the A1A Carwash, actually called Mister Car Wash, at 9516 Snow Heights Cir NE in Albuquerque. We thought about getting a car wash but decided the line was too long, and instead headed to the next spot on our list, Los Pollos Hermanos! The location, at 4257 Isleta Blvd SW, is actually a location of the New Mexico based chain, Twisters. However, inside, they have lots of Breaking Bad memorabilia and the Los Pollos Hermanos logo on the wall. We took our pictures and purchased a soda to ease our conscience.
Last on our Breaking Bad tour was Walt and Jesse’s first cook site, which is located on the Tohajiilee Navajo reservation. The location is less than a dozen miles off the highway. We pulled off the highway and headed down the lonely desert road; the speed limit was 35 mph, which significantly lengthened our drive time, but we were still determined. Along the way, we passed signs saying, “No trespassing” and “This is not public property,” but we assumed the signs were for the fenced-in area just a few yards from the signs. The pavement faded, and eventually, we were on a very bumpy dirt road, now driving a steady 20 mph with over 30 minutes left on our seven-mile journey. As we drove further and further onto the reservation, we began to question whether we wanted to spend an hour of our day driving down a bumpy dirt road and wonder if the signs were actually talking about the reservation itself and not just the fenced-in area. Maybe it was Breaking Bad on my mind, but I imagined a herd of black SUV’s driving up, surrounding our car, and a group of gangsters taking us out to the desert to shoot us. We decided to stop, take a few pictures of the open desert, and head back to the main highway. As we were taking our pictures, we saw a white truck in the distance driving toward us. Panic set in, and hearts racing, we jumped in the car and drove off as quickly as we could, a whopping 25 mph! Back on the main highway, we laughed about our imagined crime spree and agreed that it was a good thing we hadn’t gotten the car washed.

Title Luminous Avenger iX Developer Inti Creates Publisher Inti Creates Release Date September 26th, 2019 Genre Action platformer Platform PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One Age Rating T for Teen – Blood, Fantasy Violence, Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco Official Website
I’ve been a fanboy on the Gunvolt bandwagon long before Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX. Not only did I play the first two games, but I also reviewed them both on the site. So in case there was any concern about my credibility talking about the series, let’s put that to rest. The initial question I had when I heard about Luminous Avenger iX was how far after the second game it took place. As I played, other significant questions came up, though there’s not much I can discuss for fear of spoilers. That said, I will do my best to touch upon those issues for other fans, as well as tackling the gameplay itself. While I’m still a fan of the Gunvolt series after Luminous Avenger iX, there’s also a few bumps in the road I need to address.

As I stated above, it’s unclear how long after Gunvolt 2’s events that Luminous Avenger iX takes place, but things have definitely taken on new urgency. Now, Adepts are completely in power, and go so far as to hunt down and execute un-powered humans, referred to as Minos. Whereas I used to think of the Azure Striker Gunvolt series as a nod to Mega Man, now I can’t help but notice the similarity to the X-Men. In a way it’s a reverse of that comic series, a world where the super powered rule over the weak with cruelty. At the head of this dynamic is the Sumeragi Institute for the Promotion of Human Evolution, which is a group that should sound familiar to fans of the games. It’s not clear how this came to be, nor where Gunvolt himself is, but Copen’s not about to sit back and watch this atrocity continue. While his primary goal is to find the source of something called the Butterfly Effect, he also elects to protect a group of young street urchin Minos. Despite his often caustic and emotionless exterior, I found this was consistent with his personality. After all, he himself is technically a Mino, and his hatred has always been against Adepts. The key difference between him and your average Mino is his technical genius, which let him build Lola to copy and utilize Septima powers through mechanical means.

Much like Inti did with previous series such as Mega Man Zero, each installment of the Gunvolt games has become slightly less hardcore and more welcoming to players of various experience levels. That is true in Luminous Avenger iX. An example of this is that the game has gotten rid of individual achievements. You still get graded after each level, so worry not if you’re a hardcore completionist. It’s just now you don’t have to worry about satisfying other arbitrary requests. Much like the last game, I found it somewhat easier to get a good score than in the original Gunvolt game, but not so easy I ever felt I wasn’t working for it. I got plenty of B’s, a few A’s and even one shining S+. The reason it’s still a challenge is that the gameplay is pretty similar to the most recent game, meaning that the bosses are still quite challenging.

In case you need a refresher course, the game keeps the trend of tagging and then blasting foes. For Copen, you tag foes by literally dashing into them. You have a small window of invincibility when you connect, so you’re encouraged to be aggressive, but don’t be so aggressive you accidentally wander into enemy fire. When you tag a foe, it uses up a Bullit, of which you have 3. Once you’re out of Bullits, your Prevasion turns off, meaning you can take damage again. So combat is a tight balance of dashing into foes, hitting them with homing rounds, avoiding getting hit and rinsing and repeating. One nice new change is if you reload your Bullits in mid-air, you’ll charge down to the ground with a crash capable of breaking objects. Though you’ll have to be careful using it, since if you don’t land on solid ground, it’s game over.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I’ve said previously how much I enjoy playing as Copen, and that’s still true. He’s fast, furious and frankly brutal. Coupled with Lola’s Septima EX weapons, he’s a veritable Swiss Army Knife of mayhem. Even then, playing him requires great reflexes and better strategy, especially against the bosses. One thing that’s changed from previous games is Copen can’t use credits to buy new active combat abilities. There is a Customize screen, where you can buy things like additional Bullits. You can also buy passive modifiers, such as Regenerator, which restores Copen’s health when he uses his SP Skill, or OD Guard Up, which halves damage when in Overdrive mode. If I sound a bit uncertain about these, it’s cause I didn’t purchase any of them during my playthrough. I like playing a game in as pure a form as possible, and for me that meant learning to master Copen without any extra helping hand. That said, if you’re the sort that likes to tinker, there’s a multitude of options for you to try out. If you’re feeling brave, you can also try out Lola’s new Darkness Trigger, which puts her in berserk mode, attacking with random EX skills until her meter depletes.

While the combat is most definitely one of the biggest draws in Luminous Avenger iX, it would be meaningless without exhilarating boss fights. This game assuredly carries on that tradition, as it does the pattern of having 7 main Adept bosses you confront. While I normally don’t cover these in detail, I feel I should touch upon all seven Falcons real quick. First let’s talk about Rebellio. He’s on death row for crimes he committed, and Sumeragi decides to offer him a deal – kill Copen and live. His Septima is Energy Wool, which lets him create crimson constructs out of thin air, such as mace balls, gatling guns and more. As for his appearance, he looks like nothing so much as a very angry Ram. Then there’s Crimm, a psychopath who loves explosions and considers himself an artist. His Detonation Septima lets him rain pure destruction wherever he desires, gesturing with crustacean limbs while protected by a circular shield. Then there’s Stella. She may look like a floozy and talk like a sailor, but she’s actually the president of an electronics manufacturer. Her Septima is Gravity, which not only gives her the power to alter your movement, but to also manifest dangerous buzzsaws and energy beams. Of all the Adepts in this game, her transformation is the most mechanical, making her look like a living blade.
More Falcons on Page 2 ->

If you think Stella’s a hard case, then you should see her android manservant, Dystnine. He’s the only robot capable of using Septima, other than Lola, and his is particularly strange. His transformation makes him look like a mix between a unicorn and a bullfighter, and his Vectored Cloth Septima allows for some very interesting tricks, such as blocking attacks and tangling you up. Beyond just being a skilled fighter, he’s also completely loyal to Stella, to almost a romantic degree. Or take one of my personal favorites, Isola, who is essentially an evil Idol. Think Hatsune Miku but pink and insane, and you’re on the right track. Her Septima is Companion, and while you might not think she’s that dangerous, you’d better watch out before Isola shatters you with bright pink lights and holograms. If you feel like a tough guy, you can try on Bakto for size. He’s essentially a Yakuza boss, and his Spiral Septima turns him into a fierce, blue lion man. Lastly, there’s Blade. Blade is incredibly powerful, and doubly so when outraged and in berserk mode. Unlike the other Falcons, Blade seems to not be entirely in control of their actions. But don’t let that lower your defenses, since you’ll need all your skills to beat this recurring boss character.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Frankly, I really enjoyed all the Falcons in the game, and felt they added a lot of personality and depth to the story. Especially since they reveal how diabolical Sumeragi has become. Most of the Falcons are only working for Sumeragi cause they’re forced to. Hell, Rebellio is on death row unless he can finish the job. Despite being in power, this shows how out of control and desperate they have become, a fact which becomes painfully apparent very late in the game. I can’t say why, but once you find out the truth behind the Butterfly Effect, you’ll hate Sumeragi with a burning passion. And by the very end of the game, you’ll question a good many things about the Gunvolt universe.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As much as I loved the Falcons, I’m not sure I can say the same for all the Minos. They’re all adorable, especially self proclaimed pixie leader, Kohaku, but they just don’t feel that relevant in the game. Sure, Kohaku and her history serves a purpose, but the rest of them kind of feel like kawaii Charles Dickens knockoffs. Maybe if they got a bit more development I wouldn’t feel that way, but frankly I feel this is a pattern in the Gunvolt series. We get introduced to a new band of side characters each time, and very few of them actually matter. Which is a shame, since there’s so much I otherwise enjoy about the games.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Visually, I can easily say Luminous Avenger iX is the most beautiful game in the series. Everything is bold, colorful and full of detail. Though I would never call the original 3DS graphics ugly, everything is so much better on Switch. Even the menus are attractive, and I really like the portrait art as well. As for the sound design, it’s also fantastic. The music is dynamic and draws you in, and the sound effects pop with personality. One of my favorite changes here is that now dialogue happens at set points in the level, and NEVER during combat. This is such a great improvement, and shows Inti Creates listens to fan feedback. It doesn’t hurt that all the voice actors in this game are tremendously talented. If we were grading this game just on the artistry, it would easily get a perfect score.
I know typos happen, but they still take me out of the experience…
Sadly, there are a few areas I feel Luminous Avenger iX falls short. Firstly, it really bothers me that I’m not sure if this game has different endings, as is tradition. While I can’t go into reasons why this bothers me, suffice it to say that some of the late game revelations really have me scratching my head. I would almost go so far as to suspect this game takes place in an alternate universe, it’s that big. But without knowing that for sure, it’s hard to ascertain how much I enjoyed the story at large. Another area that my lack of clarity irritated me was with the Bonus Medals. There’s 4 in each stage, and I’d love to tell you what they do, but I have no idea. While it’s true I did apparently unlock some Special Missions at some point in the game, I’m pretty sure that had nothing to do with the Medals. A more substantial gripe I have is with the translation. I usually don’t point out this sort of thing in the games I’m fond of, but it’s unavoidable here. Not only do some characters have very awkward grammatical flubs, there’s also some weird Westernization that occurs. I mentioned Bakto early, and how he’s essentially a Yakuza boss. I said “essentially” since in the game, he’s called a Mafia boss. Problem is, everything about him screams Yakuza, from his name to his demeanor. This wouldn’t bother me, except for the fact Inti Creates usually waves their Japan flag pretty high and proud. It just struck me as awkward to change that sort of thing, especially since fans of the series can tell what’s up. Lastly, a recurring issue I have is with the leveling system. It still feels too passive and unnecessary to me. It’d be one thing if leveling up did more than increase your base health, such as opening up modifiers you can equip or something. As it is, I just don’t feel that’s necessary at all for a game this fast paced and frenetic.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I did truly enjoy Luminous Avenger iX, but I can’t help but feel it wasn’t consistently awesome in every regard. The plot left more questions than it answered, and while the combat was definitely a lot of fun, I wanted more of it. Perhaps that’s because the last game had two protagonists instead of just one, but regardless there should have been something more to keep me playing. I managed to beat the entire game in a little over 3 hours, though I spent another 2 and change to try and find a secret ending. While I didn’t succeed in unlocking any new endings, there is still a bit of replay value. Those who like to tinker can unlock a lot of customization options, and truly hardcore fans can try and get an S+ for each stage. There’s also the aforementioned Special Missions, which are basically remixed forms of stages with harder boss fights. For $14.99, you still get an amazing game with Luminous Avenger iX. I just hope that the next adventure does more to explain the setting of this title, as well as to expand on the areas the series already excels.

Meetings, training, and travel 05/02/17-05/28/17
The bus arrived at Bangkok’s main bus terminal at 7 PM. I looked up where my first meeting was being held and decided to walk to the area instead of getting a motorbike taxi and make sure I had my bearings before the meeting in the morning.
I was 6 kilometers away from my destination, so first I stopped at a 7/11 which is Thailand’s one stop shop for just about anything delicious besides the markets and roadside stands and picked up some supper.
After a couple hours of walking I arrived in the area and found a hotel for the night since all the businesses were closed and shuttered.
In the morning I discovered that my gps hit was a little off but after asking directions I took a motorbike taxi and made it to my meeting with just a few minutes to spare!
I, along with two other team members were meeting with both the managing director and medical director of a Burmese logistics company who specializes in helping sick or injured patients find quality emergency medical treatment, escort, and evacuation in SE Asian countries.
One of my old friends from the US has done business with their medical director and suggested that we meet and discuss ways to collaborate, and since our ambulance project is bogged down we were looking for another project to work on that will give us hands on patient care in addition to all the training we are involved in.
After the meeting- which was a success- we drove several blocks to find pizza for lunch to celebrate and then we headed off to our second meeting.
This meeting was with the managing director of the AREMT, an international counterpart to the NREMT. Because of all the training we are doing in Myanmar we wanted to partner with an organization that will allow us to offer an internationally recognized certification upon successfully completing our courses.
After the meeting we decided to pursue accreditation and currently both our side and the AREMT are working on finalizing the details.
That evening after my teammates went back to Kanchanaburi I spent one more night in Bangkok before taking a motorbike taxi back to the bus station the next morning.
Because there was still a week and a half before our next training I decided to take the bus up to Chiang Mai and visit some friends for a few days!
After 11 hours on the bus I was at my destination and was picked up by my friends in one of our original Thai ambulances which we had to sell!
Over the weekend I was able to hang out and relax with my friends and their cute children. One day we all piled into the ambulance and drove a couple hours even farther north to the small town of Pai. Pai is well known for the amazingly scenic drive up into the mountains before dropping down into a small valley where the town is. It it also known for its amazing street market that we were hoping to get to in time for lunch!
When we were about 10 km from the town we drove into a wall of torrential monsoon rain and were worried that the market would be completely shut down but when we arrived we were happy to see that we had beat the rain!
After stopping at a giant Buddha that stands guard over the valley and racing up its 250+ stairs with the kids to burn some energy, we drove down to the market.
Barely had we started to look around though when the tropical rainstorm caught up to us and it started pouring. We quickly grabbed some food and retreated back to the safety of the “ambulance”.
On the drive back up out of the valley we were amazed to find that the entire road had flash flooded after we passed and now there were large basketball sized rocks strewn all over the road as well as fallen trees, power lines, and a thick layer of sand and mud in places. We were glad for the knobby tires and high ground clearance as we negotiated all the obstacles!
On Sunday we went rock climbing on some volcanic cliffs outside of Chiang Mai. We climbed three routes including a crevice that was really challenging and a lot of fun!
Early Tuesday morning I had to say goodbye and headed to the bus stop to go visit my friends at Sunshine Orchard on my way back to Myanmar.
Once I arrived at the bus station, I discovered that my options weren’t so fantastic. I could either wait for 1 hour to get a bus that would only take me within 60 miles of the closest songtau circuit or I could wait for 5 hours to get a bus that would go all the way to the songtau route.
So since I still had 5 days until I had to be back I decided to go exploring!
I bought a seat on a small van that was driving to Mae Sariang Thailand which is southwest of Chiang Mai close to the border and several hours north of Sunshine Orchard.
The views along the way were phenomenal. Beautiful jungle mountains with little towns and villages dotted along the way. All the farmers rice paddies are green and lush and there were little well-tended garden patches behind all the huts.
Some of the coolest rice paddies I’ve seen in Thailand were along the way. Because the mountains are so steep the jungle farmers don’t have hardly any arable land so in between each hill they cut into the bases of the hills and widen the area between them to plant in. The cultivated areas are sometimes only 30-50 feet wide and are steeply terraced. They plant the rice in the terraces and it gets watered from rain runoff.
When we were maybe two hours from our destination we drove around a sharp corner and found that a car had failed to make the corner and flown off the very steep edge of the road and become trapped in the trees and vines about 20 feet below the road and 15 or 20 feet above the ground!
Fortunately everybody was out and the police were there and a tow truck was trying to attach his winch to the car so he could pull it down!
After a while we arrived in Mae Sariang. I found it to be a nice town, much smaller than I was anticipating, and not geared towards tourists at all like Pai is.
Striking off in a random direction I found a guesthouse to sleep in and hung out all my wet clothes to hopefully dry over night.
In the morning I went to the market and bought some dragonfruit, mango, and apples and started walking down the road towards Sunshine Orchard eating my breakfast.
I could have just gone to the station and waited for a songtau but I felt like walking and letting one catch up to me.
After 45 minutes a man on a scooter passed me and then turned around and came up beside me. Surprisingly he spoke excellent English and wanted to meet me and find out where I was going. After introducing ourselves and visiting for a few minutes, Mr. Nong San invited me to visit his house and wait for the songtau there.
After agreeing I jumped on the back of the scooter and off we went. On the way we stopped at a little roadside shop where he bought us both something to drink......It was the first locally made energy drink I’d had since I started working in SE Asia- the kind that looks and tastes like it’s made out of bulls blood, monkey testosterone, and caffeine with a shot of fresh coca tea- 😖.
After that experience we drove about 10 minutes further down the road to a very nice house set well off the road and surrounded by potted tropical plants.
After inviting me inside Mr. Nong San made coffee and we sat and talked at the kitchen table. I found out that Mr. Nong San legally immigrated to Thailand from Burma with his family 70 years ago. In 1966 he immigrated again to San Francisco and lived in the USA for 50 years teaching Thai in New York City and other places before retiring and moving back home.
One of his favorite hobbies is coin collecting and he showed me some of his amazing rare coins from the US and around the world. He also is a rare coin seller and urged me to let everyone I know know where to buy the best coins!
After an hour he said that the songtau would come soon and even though he sells coins he gave me a beautiful and rare Thai baht as thanks for visiting him! I gave him a dragonfruit as a token of thanks and got my backpack on.
I thought I would just walk out to the road and wait but Mr. Nong San instead drove me all the way back into town and got me all set with the songtau before going!
The songtau eventually got me to my destination and I spent that afternoon and the next morning with my friends at Sunshine Orchard before continuing on via songtau to MaeSot. I spent one night in MaeSot and crossed the border into Myanmar on the 12th to help finish preparations for the upcoming EMR course.
Monday, May 15 the EMR class went live with 40 students! First there was an opening ceremony with local religious and government leaders giving short speeches, next a emissary group from Taw Win foundation in Yangon that we helped Z-Rescue train gave a speech and donated a projector as a thank you gift. Finally classes could get underway!
Or so we thought… Just after the first lecture had started one of the main sponsors for Z-Rescue who was also helping support this training asked if he could make an announcement. He announced that he would donate the uniform he was wearing to the student with the highest grade, and then he proceeded to strip right up on stage, using a longyi as a changing room!
Just in case that wasn’t a big enough incentive he pulled out a stack of 100,000 kyat (about $75.00) and threw that into the pot also! Of course, this performance got the whole class riled up and laughing and we had to take another break before we could really start.
This training is unique because it’s the first time we’ve had any other instructors besides the ones on our own team, and this time we have 4! So we have high hopes that their training will be dynamic and informative.
The afternoon of the first day of training we were honored to have two of our Swiss and German sponsors visit us. They have assisted us with sponsoring classes before and are finally able to come check us out in person!
By the afternoon of the second day everything was going according to plan when I received a call from the logistics company I had met with in Bangkok. They said they had a critical patient and asked if we could help them. We were still working on the necessary paperwork to allow M-EMS to contract for them, and the proposed start date was still a couple months away because we were still missing some key supplies like a cardiac monitor to be truly ALS.
I reminded them of this and they said that was ok because we were the only in-country team available so I hurriedly packed my backpack and double checked the aid bag and rushed to make it to the bus just before it left (there’s no airport in Myawaddy).
My translator and I took the night bus to Yangon and then took a taxi to the airport where we met the rest of the rescue team, a flight doctor from Bangkok and a communications specialist from the logistics company.
We chartered a Cessna Caravan and took off for towards our patient who was in northwest Rakhine state near the Bangladesh border.
Our flight plan had us at only 12,000 feet, so for most of the way there we were constantly zigzagging around trying to avoid the thunderheads of the monsoon.
The town of Sittwe is situated on a low peninsula in the Bay of Bengal, and as we descended to land I could see dozens of tiny fishing boats and canoes below us on the water.
As our plane touched down there was a loud noise and we suddenly tilted sideways and went shooting off towards the edge of the runway. After vibrating and wallowing to a stop, we climbed out and saw that the left side tire had blown!
The airport sent out a little truck to collect us, and after we got to the terminal we went outside and found the ambulance that was waiting to take us to the patient.
Our patient was a 32 year old French tourist who had tried diving into one of the nearby rivers and found out it wasn’t as deep as it looked. He hit a rock and scalped himself from the top of his head all the way down to his eyebrows.
First he was taken to a local clinic where they controlled the bleeding and then he was transferred to the hospital in Sittwe.
After we got to the hospital we went to the patient and found him laying in an open ward right next to another patient who looked and sounded like he had a terminal case of pneumonia or TB and had a giant unsecured oxygen tank standing upright between their beds.
The patient was extremely relieved to see us, and we were relieved to see that he was as in good shape as he was.
We completed our assessment and cut off the filthy dressing that he had on and discovered that the hospital had done an incredibly hacked up suture job without cleaning underneath first and the wound was starting to become infected. Amazingly he had no cranial or cervical vertebrae fractures per X-ray and no neck pain or neurological deficits. (He did have a headache for some reason though!)
After cleaning as best we could and re-dressing his injury and administering antibiotics we settled down to wait because the flight company had to send a new plane for us!
After we received word that the plane had arrived we loaded up our patient and rode in the ambulance again back to the airport. The airport had towed our old plane off the runway to over in front of the waiting area and the replacement was taxied up right beside it, not a confidence booster for our patient!
The flight back was uneventful and after landing in Yangon my translator and I transferred the patient to the hospital, and after waiting to make sure he was admitted and would be taken care of we took a taxi back to our apartment, exhausted.
We spent a couple days in Yangon waiting to find out if the patient would need to be evacuated out of the country or not and then took the bus back to Myawaddy on Sunday the 21st just in time for the second week of training.
I can’t say about the rest of week one but week two was fun with lots of scenarios and hands on skills practice interspersed in the lectures!
One night we were requested to go to the local hospital to see a patient. One of the government officials who was at the opening ceremony was sick and wanted us to look at him. He was also unhappy with the doctor who was taking care of him and wanted a second opinion.
After arriving at the hospital we were taken to a large open ward with 15 or 30 other patients and after visiting with and assessing our patient concluded that he had probably had a new onset seizure.
We asked the doctor if we could look at any labs or paperwork to confirm or find a differential but he was extremely unhelpful and wouldn’t share any information with us. I went back to the patient and asked if he could remember any medications that he had been given. The patient had a package he showed me that had Valproate which is for seizures!
Since there was nothing we could do for him we wished the patient good luck and a safe transfer to the Thai hospital in the morning and went back to our guesthouse.
After the classroom portion of class was over the final written and practical exams were taken, and overall the students did very well. We only had 3 students fail out of the 30 that stuck it out for the whole two weeks! Our highest scoring student was with a rescue group who came all the way from Sagaing region and he made a 96% on his written final! He was presented with the prize money and clothes from the sponsor in addition to his certificate and was so pleased he couldn’t stop shaking my hand and even smelled the clothes in front of the class 😆.
We had a graduation ceremony and then we packed all our manikins and teaching supplies up and loaded everything into the van In between downpours.
After spending one more day in Myawaddy some of us took the van and some of us took the bus back to our apartment in Yangon arriving on May 28th.
