Hold Me Tight (and Don't Forget Me)
Tumblr media
Scenario: Dazai takes you out on a date the day he's arrested. Slight Warning for Jouno being an ass.
Hold Me Tight - BTS
Pt. 2
1.3 k word count
Blue skies and perfect weather - the worst, because that meant that today would be the perfect day before Dazai would ruin it once again.
It was a strange feeling to have. It was too peaceful, like a flock of seagulls waiting to be chased.
There was nothing wrong. And that was what was wrong with it.
"Dazai. Did you do something?"
You knew it was impossible to ask Dazai these questions and get an honest answer - your ability didn't work on him, so it was only a force of habit to want to interrogate him.
In response, he only smiled, like a cat that was too high for the barking dog. It made your skin bristle every time, but today he was handsy - he smoothed down your sleeves, easing your nerves with a gentle touch.
"I didn't do anything that you need to worry about. We're supposed to be focused on us, remember?"
His grin was honest, almost charming. He sipped his coffee rather loudly to make his point, drinking as if to remind you with force that you were in a diner, not at the Armed Detective Agency.
"Well, yes. But I know you, and you're only hiding the inevitable. You can tell me Dazai, we are dating."
It was weak to pull a card like that with him, but it was always worth a shot anyway. As if dating would make a difference in how Dazai acted.
The man was a mystery, sitting in front of you in his casual attire - nicer because for once, he had washed them for this occasion. He looked put together as well, hair nicely done and his face looking as a man in his younger 20s should.
He typically looked a little disheveled, hidden behind his charisma but noticeable with anyone who cared for appearances. A good smile managed to hide a lot of things, and for once you didn't need to think about it.
In your mind, you knew that something was wrong from this. The last time he had taken you out like this, he had known he would almost die from an ability user, and it was his apology beforehand.
The strange sense of doom was disconcerting; but so was Dazai's cold skin. He was always bouncing so quickly between temperatures as if he were a broken heater - but being cold? On such a warm day?
"I know we are. Just enjoy yourself babe, can't you do that for me?"
His smile was warm, enough to reach his chestnut eyes - treated with a light varnish from the sunlight penetrating the windows. Whatever warmth his body did have, he must have given it to you through that smile, because now you felt just a little hot.
"I don't like you sometimes."
You averted from his gaze, still holding onto his hand despite this. Dazai didn't say anything, his fingers gently tracing patterns along the hair on your wrists.
"Your face says otherwise. Looks like you're loving my company."
He leaned in closer, careful of your plates, pulling your face to match his. It was easier to kiss him than to say you had lost.
But still, something was wrong.
Dazai kissed you as if he would walk out like this was his last dinner. It wasn't hungry and yet it wasn't polite - it was desperate and it felt like an apology for a crime he hadn't even committed yet.
Or maybe one he already had.
-
It was only the middle of the day when Dazai had decided that a good way to spend your time would be horse betting.
Gambling seemed like an odd place to have a date, but it hadn't been the worst one of his ideas. At least it was outside, and it made for good conversation - even as he insisted on staying as close to the crowd as possible.
Dazai had thrown around some big money - enough to make you worried he was going to actually kill himself tonight.
He was just...strange. As the races had gone on, he had become more and more nervous, fumbling with his pockets and becoming a sort of weird handsy with you - as if you wouldn't notice the strange clamminess his skin had become.
Cold and sweaty, a strange feeling on Dazai.
You were left stuck in deep thought as you stared at the pale white horse Dazai had bet on, a bold '9' staring right back at you.
"Excuse me"
A soft and polite voice had broken you out of your thoughts, forcing you to look away from the race - you had won, and a little bit of relief was felt knowing that Dazai was at least lucky enough to have not blown his last three paychecks on horse racing.
"Would either of you happen to know who won this race?"
His eyes were closed, while his smile seemed...off. Your ability was near constant in your mind, and you could feel how wrong this man was. He didn't really care which horse won that race.
"Number 9 won." In your silence, Dazai responded for you, smiling as if this were an idle conversation. He hadn't seemed to notice the scheming mask the man wore, like a fox ready to jump for the canary.
"So you won then, right? You seem quite pleased with yourself after all."
"Wow! How'd you know all of that?"
You tried to lean closer to Dazai, almost feeling how wrong the man was. It was almost like he knew something you didn't, and it was disturbing to you. His smile practically was still friendly, nothing wrong. But it felt almost as cutting as a knife.
"After I had lost my sight, I had gained new senses - I can hear your heart rates, smell your fear, and even feel your future in my back pocket."
Swiftly, the man had handcuffed himself to Dazai, revealing a pair of sharp canines behind his wicked smile.
"And I know that you, Osamu Dazai, are going to be arrested for 138 counts of conspiracy to murder, 312 counts of extortion, and 625 counts of assorted fraud. I could keep going, but I feel like your fiancé has heard more than enough."
Dazai turned to you, his face paler than the cumulonimbus clouds that towered the sky behind you. By his expression alone, you could tell he had no idea that this would happen.
"Wait, hold on-"
You held onto Dazai's arm desperately, reaching for the handcuffs that were beginning to tear him apart from you. This felt like a dream turning into a nightmare, and that you were running too slow.
"I'm a Hunting Dog. I know more than enough about you as well, and your ability should have told you that I'm not a liar like Mr. Dazai here."
Maybe that was why he felt so off. It was more than just the way he said horrible things - over 100 counts of murder, with complete and utter truth.
"Y/n."
Dazai looked back at you with a solem look. There were so many emotions in your head, that you could only focus on the words that had come out of his mouth.
"I love you. Don't forget that, okay?"
Abruptly, you felt him pry your fingers off of his jacket, and look back to the Hunting Dog who had arrested him.
"There's no chance of escaping you, is there?"
"Even if you're hiding in the crowd, I would just kill them. I can take liberties with human life. I can kill your darling too, if you don't start walking."
Numbly, you watched as Dazai left. As if it were a dream, you were stuck in place, unable to chase after him and tell him to stop and even explain how the hell he had gotten into this situation.
You hadn't even gotten the other man's name, not so you could curse him out for taking your love away. There wasn't even the chance to scream.
It was a horribly numb feeling, stuck there in that moment, watching as Dazai walked further and further away from you.
Tumblr media
Sorry, had this idea for a while. I was gonna use this song for Jouno, then Nikolai, then GOJO but ended up being a depressing Dazai fic once again....sigh.

“Traitor! I’ll never forgive you for this!”
He could hardly believe that he was the one speaking the words, spitting them at the people he considered some of his closest friends. The man he considered a kind of father.
It was him that should be screamed at. That should be cursed out. He was in no place to accuse anyone of anything.
And yet.
“I trusted you! How could you do this to me?!”
The traitorous old bastard in question didn’t move, staring at him with a pitied gaze.
“Michizou-“
“Don’t fucking talk to me!”
“Can we wrap this up? I have an appointment to annoy Kunikida after this, and I can’t miss it.”
And then there was the damn detective. A far cry from the Port Mafia executive that he used to hear reports about, the obnoxious fucker had walked up behind him and cheerily cuffed their hands together.
If Tachihara hadn’t grown up around Jouno, he might’ve been impressed.
“Tachihara, it’s not that we want to hurt you or anything…”
Higuchi, in her ever-sensitive state was standing behind Hirotsu, holding onto the arm of a mildly annoyed Akutagawa. At least, that was how he wanted to come off.
Tachihara could practically smell the disappointment coming off him in waves.
“No. You just wanna get rid of me! This is revenge for betraying you!”
He considered lunging at them, but he doubted they’d fall for the bluff. And at the end of the day, he knew he wouldn’t actually hurt them.
Plus, he was dragging around about 67kg of dead weight.
“We don’t want to get rid of you. You know that.”
Hirtosu continued speaking in that same antagonizing tone of voice. As if Tachihara were some cornered animal he were trying to soothe. Or worse, a child throwing a temper tantrum.
“Do I?! Cuz you’re the ones who fucking ambushed me!”
It was supposed to be a simple picnic. That was all he wanted. The only request he’d made.
‘Before I die, I wanna do something. As a family.’
It’d been an embarrassing thought. And even more embarrassing to say. But after everything that had happened, spending his last two days with the them seemed like bliss.
“Tachihara.”
Gin’s voice was soft as always. Gentle in ways that the others couldn’t even fathom being. He’d refused to look at her, and he wasn’t planning on starting now. She of all people should know how he felt.
It was her that he’d told first.
‘Yeah. The Hunting Dogs are fucked like that. But hey, I wouldn’t trade this for the world. I’d rather die in a couple days than spend a life away from all of you.’
Gin hadn’t said anything at first. Just quietly ran her fingers through his hair as he talked.
The next day, the boss called him up.
He’d essentially taken one glance at the shadowed corner of his office and vehemently declared it was Tachihara’s choice and he wasn’t going to get involved.
Tachihara, meanwhile, had made his position very clear when he’d pulled a sword on his own commander.
And yet.
“Fool. To think you’d throw away your future for a bunch of lowlives.”
Tachihara gracefully didn’t mention the fact that Akutagawa had done the same thing for a man he claimed to hate not even a month prior.
“You’re one to fucking say shit! You spent years pining after praise from a man who tries to kill himself every other day.”
He turned to the bandaged man essentially holding hands with him.
“No offense.”
“None taken! Though, if you wanted to commit a double suicide, all you had to do was ask~”
“Is that some kinda joke to you?! My brother killed himself ya know! It’s not fucking funny!”
He paused.
“And I ain’t suicidal either!”
“Maybe not, but you don’t really value your own life~”
“Keep talking to me like that and I’ll grant your last wish and end you myself!”
“Enough. Both of you.”
Hirtosu, as always, was the voice of reason.
It was frustrating though, having the old man treat them like squabbling children. Even if they were. In a way.
And even if Dazai was right. In a way.
“It’s not…that I dislike bein’ alive or something. I just…”
He was a hunting dog. He’d been trained to always fight for justice. He was a weapon to be wielded. A soldier to be ordered around. A dog sent to catch its prey, no matter the cost of the hunt.
That was who he was. Who he was designed to be.
That was why he had tried to slit his throat without hesitation, if it meant not being turned against the world.
“Tachihara…”
Higuchi was still behind the others, but she took a step forward as she spoke. Her eyes were wet with unshed tears. Great.
“Nee-san, I didn’t mean…”
Curse the damn detective. No wonder Chuuya couldn’t stand him.
Thought to be honest, his instincts as a spy told him otherwise.
“That’s not the damn point! The point is that you ignored what I wanted! You lied to me and said we could spend today together! Why is that so hard to understand?! That I wanna spend the day with the…with the only family I got left.”
Higuchi turned away from him, but he could hear the sob she muffled behind her hand. Even Hirtosu, usually so calm, so stoic was looking at him with something akin to-
“Don’t ya dare pity me, gramps! I don’t need that! Not from you!”
If nothing else, he didn’t bother denying it. Tachihara had already seen the glint in his eyes. If he didn’t know better, he’d think he was about to start crying.
But he’d known the man for years. It wouldn’t make sense. Not for him.
The pity hurt. The fact that they didn’t see this as betraying him. They saw this as saving him. And it may have been the only way to save his life, but…
Images flashed through his mind.
A cheery young girl bragging about her latest successful torture method. One who, despite her constant joy derived from tormenting him, was always by his side. One who he viewed as a little sister.
A master of the blade whose accomplishments were only slightly less impressive than the food combinations he ate on a daily basis. A stoic pillar of support for the others.
A man who teased him, but was always the first to support him. Who could break the toughest of men and then come back and treat him just like a little brother.
The one who’d raised them. Who’d turned them into what they were.
The mafia was his family, but so were they.
And without them…
“I’m not goin’ back! You can’t make me!”
That wasn’t a threat or a challenge or anything. It was just true. Even they couldn’t manage to drag him all the way back to a top-secret military base. Not without abilities. Which they wouldn’t be able to use while Dazai was touching him.
And they all knew that the second he let go, Tachihara would be off like one of his bullets.
“That’s where you’re wrong, I’m afraid.”
That voice was one he’d only heard a few times. They’d never been particularly close. More of a distant, mutual respect for one another.
Which made sense, with the two of them being the only successful spies that infiltrated the mafia and survived.
“What? So you’re in on this too?! I guess that’s not shocking, considering your track record,” Tachihara spat.
The black-haired man stepped forward, adjusting his circular glasses.
“That’s enough. It’s time to go home.”
Agent Sakaguchi’s expression was schooled, neutral. Near unreadable, if not for Michizou’s prior knowledge of the man’s training and history.
Despite the faint regret, Tachihara knew better than to reason with him. While the Black Lizard only wanted to help him, Sakaguchi was just doing his job. There was nothing to be said that would persuade him.
“I thought this was my home.”
“The mafia isn’t a home.”
Though his words were harsh, the teenager knew that he was convincing himself more than anyone else. He may have had no loyalty to the Port Mafia anymore, but everyone with connections to his division knew that he took the same day off every year and came back smelling of whisky, curry, and flowers.
It wasn’t hard for a trained spy to connect the dots. Or even an untrained spy, if gossips were to be believed.
Tachihara understood though. He too wished things could’ve been different. But unlike Ango, he really believed he’d found his place.
Dazai threw his arms around him just as the man snapped his fingers. Though his reflexes were far beyond average thanks to the surgeries, even if his were lighter, the exhaustion of his body shutting down and being pushed passed its deadline slowed him down considerably.
He barely had time to react before he felt a sharp prick in his neck.
“Heyyyy Ango~! Do you think this stuff would kill me if I got injected with it?”
The parking lot was spinning, but the excitement in the detective’s voice was loud and clear.
“Absolutely, so don’t even try it. The Hunting Dogs are resistant to most poisons and drugs, so we need an extra strong dose. That’s enough to kill 30 men.”
“Aw, and you didn’t save any for me?”
Jeez, he didn’t have to sound so damn disappointed.
From beyond the haze of blacks and grays, Higuchi’s blonde head approached him.
Tachihara swayed a bit on his feet, allowing the deceptively-strong twig of a man still clinging to him to support his weight fully.
“Nee-san…”
He felt like he was speaking underwater. His limbs felt like jelly.
He’d had surgery over 70 times. He’d been under anesthesia a lot. But this was different. This felt like the world itself was fighting against him, trying to drag him down to hell with the rest of his missing unit.
“Shhh, I’m here. It’s okay. You’re okay.”
He closed his eyes, nodding slowly as cold hands came to rest upon his cheeks. “You’re not alone. We’re all here with you.”
He was faintly aware of the heavy hand on his shoulder. The stench of cigarettes easily overwhelmed him.
Gross.
“Hey…you should really…take better care of your lungs. You’re already…practically…a fossil.”
He yawned. He was so, so tired all of a sudden.
The old man in question gave him a sad chuckle before patting his head affectionately.
Tachihara may have been a mafioso, but he never was a fan of Gramps smoking. If nothing else, the lecture Jouno would give him when he came back to the base smelling of nicotine was bad enough.
Still, he allowed them to wrap around him.
He couldn’t quite remember why they were so worried, but he knew they were upset.
“Why…ya sound so…sad?”
“Shut up,” Akutagawa’s voice echoed over the ringing in his ears.
Tachihara Michizou was never one to refuse a direct order.
Except…
Ah, it was all too hazy.
“Think ‘m…gonna sleep…now…”
Words continued to be said, but he didn’t process any of them. Even Gin’s soft voice, whispering in his ear.
“I…ve…ou.”
Hirtosu didn’t know how long he’d been standing there.
His cigarette tasted bitter in his mouth. The sounds of the engines and Higuchi’s wails had all but faded now.
“It’s a shame.”
He had nothing to say beyond that. It wasn’t that he didn’t care. Far from it. It was just that despite his enjoyment of reminiscing, he didn’t want to think about this any more than he had already.
Perhaps once he, Chuuya, and Kajii were all a few beers deep.
The elderly mafioso took another drag of his cigarette.
“I wonder if I’ve made a mistake.”
It wasn’t a question he wanted to reflect on particularly. But his audience wouldn’t show itself until he invited conversation.
“You already know where I stand.”
The executive didn’t bother emerging from the shadows. He didn’t have to. The fact that he’d left his office was tell enough that he was invested.
“…I couldn’t let him die.”
“That doesn’t mean you let him live.”
“I know.”
Another breath. Another cloud of smoke.
“This isn’t over. Things won’t end like this.”
Hirtosu didn’t respond for a moment. Then, with a small smile, he spoke.
“You sound like you’re agreeing to help.”
“No. I’m not. However…I’ll see what information I can find. I have resources.”
As one should expect of perhaps the greatest assassin of all time.
“Why? I’d half expected you to wipe your hands of this.”
“I did too. Those soldiers…they may not be like my brother and I. But we’re the same in some ways.”
The man in the shadows smiled softly.
“Someone once saved me, despite how I betrayed him. He’s the reason I’m still here, though he is not. So, I’ll find what information I can.”
The man turned to leave.
“Perhaps one day, I can make up for everything I’ve done. Right, Arthur?”

Their S/o Kills Someone For the First Time; Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Saigiku Jouno
Format: Scenarios
Possible warnings: Angst, mentions of death, blood, manipulation, unhealthy relationships, mentions of vomiting
Tumblr media
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
You stared at your hands, covered in blood. Your whole body started to shake as you fell to your knees. You just killed someone in cold blood—in front of your boyfriend nonetheless. You felt nauseous as you continued to stare at your bloodied hands. You hated it. You couldn’t breathe. You wanted this to end.
The mission you were sent on didn’t entail you killing anyone today! You were just supposed to grab some information sneakily and escape; it was supposed to be simple. But you somehow managed to get caught by one guard, and you were forced to fight them to the death.
You wanted to leave them incapacitated and not shed any unnecessary blood, but that was too much to ask for in the current situation. You shot them through the stomach, slowly watching their life drain from their body as they fell to the ground. Eventually they went limp and that’s when reality crashed onto you.
Your breath started to quicken as you felt Fyodor put his hand on your shoulder. The contact gave you very little comfort, but you appreciated the act of “kindness” nonetheless.
“Are you alright?” He asked, sounding unaffected by the current situation.
You shook your head frantically. You tried to verbally respond to your boyfriend, but the words just wouldn’t come out. They seemed to be caught on your tongue, not wanting to escape.
Fyodor sighed. “You did what was needed to be done. You had to kill them.”
You shook your head. “No! I could’ve just knocked them out! I—”
“(Name),” he said in a firm tone. You physically tensed up. “You killing that person was necessary. You had to do it for your own survival.”
You gulped as tears started to fall down your cheeks. You felt disgusting.
“You’re wrong!”
Fyodor’s grip on your shoulder tightened as he looked down at you. He seemed disappointed, but yet at the same time he had a smirk on his face. It made your stomach turn. You knew he had something on his mind; manipulating you was the most plausible answer.
“I’m never wrong. You should know that already,” he said, keeping his voice low. He then bent down and whispered in your ear. “We need to leave now, unless you wish to kill more guards. Do you want that? Do you want even more blood on your hands?”
“No, I don’t want that!” You said frantically.
Fyodor hummed. “Then get up and let’s leave,” he said coldly.
You shakily stood up. You body felt like it would collapse at any minute from the amount of trauma you have just experienced. It was sickening.
Fyodor roughly grabbed your arm and started to lead you outside. “Let’s go.”
You silently followed him, not wanting to speak and somehow manage to anger your boyfriend. You knew that more often than not he had your best interests in mind, but it very rarely came across that way. In moments like this he was cold; it made you shiver.
Eventually the two of you made it back to your shared apartment. You locked yourself in your bathroom, holding your head over the toilet. You didn’t wash your hands yet, so as you gripped the toilet bowl, the guards blood stained it. The white was eventually going to turn into a soft pink because of this.
Fyodor just stood in the doorway watching you. Not a single word left his mouth as you felt like you were going to vomit up your breakfast.
After a while, Fyodor spoke up. You could tell that he was forcing himself to sound kind. “Are you alright?”
You shook your head. “No.”
“I see… Well, this reaction to killing someone is completely normal. You did just take a life after all. They probably had a family and what have you,” he paused for a moment. “Everything will be fine, my dear. Trust me.”
Tumblr media
Saigiku Jouno
Today you were out on patrol with Jouno. You were the newest member of the Hunting Dogs, so you often had to join older members on their duties. Sometimes it annoyed you because you knew that you could defend yourself, but who were you to question your superiors?
A while ago Jouno heard a robbery occurring, and he sent you to deal with it. You caught up with the robber rather easily, but they didn’t want to surrender. They then pulled a gun on you, shot at you, and then you were forced to strike them down with your saber.
Currently you were in an alleyway, your palms up against a nearby brick wall. You looked down at your boots, the enemy’s blood slightly coating them. Your breathing slowly started to become shallow. You could your rapid heartbeat in your ears. It hurt. It pained you. You despised it with your whole being.
You had stabbed the robber through the chest since it was apparent that they wouldn’t allow themselves to get arrested. You were scared because you were supposed to work on the right side of the law—prevent murders from happening, but you did the opposite. You had just killed that person in cold blood.
You could hear faint footsteps coming from behind you. You knew it was Jouno, but yet you didn’t turn back to look at him. You knew he was going to scold you.
“Did you do this?” He eventually asked. “You do know how I hate the scent of blood and corpses, right?”
“Sorry,” you said shakily. “I didn’t mean too… They just tried to kill me and… I had to!”
You glanced back at Jouno as he put his right hand on his chin. He wore an unreadable expression, and it scared you. You’ve been warned that he has sadistic tendencies, but you never thought that you’d find yourself in a situation where you’d be on the receiving end of his actions.
“You couldn’t just disarm them?” He asked sarcastically.
“I couldn’t find an opening!”
You cupped your hand over your mouth. You felt like you were going to throw up. Tears slowly dripped down your cheeks as you thought of what had just transpired between you and the robber. Your thoughts started to drift off to thinking about your already terrible sleep schedule. You knew that you’d have nightmares about this for a few weeks.
Jouno hummed. “Was this your first time taking a life?”
“…Yes.”
“It shows. Now pick yourself up and let’s get going,” he said coldly. “Do you want to stay and see the corpse slowly rot?”
Your breath hitched for a moment. The thought of watching the criminal slowly decay made you feel sick.
“No sir,” you answered.
He nodded. “Then let’s get going.”
Jouno turned to leave without a second thought. You knew that he cared very little about the people below him, but it was still a punch in the gut nonetheless. You wanted him to comfort you, but you knew he wouldn’t do that. That’s too kind of him.
You walked behind him quietly. You then started to speak, your voice still shaking. “What are we gonna do with the corpse? Will it be picked up?”
Jouno turned his head back at you for a moment before answering. “Be quiet, will you? Calm yourself down. You’re still panicking.”
In a strange way those words provided a small sense of comfort.
“Yes sir.”
He groaned. “How many times have I just told you to call me Jouno? Or is that too much to ask of your pea brain?”

So a singularity is when 2 abilities cancel each other and make a brand new one.
Fyodor made a tripolar singularity made out of The Holy Sword, Amenogozen and Fukuchi. Which prolly means Fyodor is controlling said singularity. So he can travel time and space, and this is amplified by Fukuchi, BUT also some other thing that we don't know yet.
Also, Fyodor is possessing Bram. Bram is the King of Vampires, so he can control all the vampires. Which means that Fyodor can control all the vampires. Fun fact: HALF OF THE MAFIA MEMBERS ARE VAMPIRES. Unless Bram died which means that the vampires come back to normal. But wait! If that happens it means that Akutagawa comes back. But then wouldn't that mean he's dead??
Chuuya and Dazai are still in Meursault. Which is a prison in France. And who else is in France and could have access to the Meursault? Adam. Adam manga debut???
Meursault is a prison in France. But it is also a character from "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. New character??
Also, now it's obvious that Dazai is the only one that can kill Dostoievsky. But Dazai doesn't kill anymore, right? Yeah, I bet he will kill Fyodor. But how will he get there in time??? And like, when Sskk will fight him they have to make sure they don't kill Fyodor. 'Cuz otherwise they're screwed. What I don't know is what happens if they kill Fukuchi.
And they should just get Chuuya to end Genshin Impact Fukuchi.
Also, what about Nikolai? Where is he? Is he still in Meursault? Or did he leave? He didn't know Fyodor's ability because otherwise he wouldn't have made that game. But what if the poison kicked in before and Fyodor would have been killed by Nikolai?? And I know we were all waiting for Nikolai antagonist arc, but I think we're getting Nikolai redemption arc instead.
And if Fyodor's ability is the possessing thing, how the fuck did he kill Karma and everyone else on the ship??? Like, we know he killed that one cop with Nathaniel's ability, but what about Karma??? He wasn't working with Nathaniel back then!
Also, do you think Fyodor's goal rn is to possess Atsushi? I mean, Fedya is sure Sushi is the only one that knows where the book is. So like of he gets over Sushi he will know how to get the book.
And how come Dazai and Ranpo didn't see this coming??? Can't Ranpo figure out anything in under 60 seconds????
Also, you know how every time we see someone become a vampire their neck is bitten? (Aku bit Higuchi's neck, she bit Gin's neck etc). Well, Aku didn't bite Jouno's neck. He bit his shoulder. So Jouno is not a vampire. But he's not dead either. He's just passed out somewhere. He's gonna wake up and come beat Fukuchi's ass. I just hope someone tells him abt Dostoievsky's ability before he tries to kill Fyodor.
And why was Fukuchi still alive after his throat was cut and he was stabbed so many times but Akutagawa didn't get to live after his neck was cut???
So long story short: Everyone is fucked and I'm losing it.

Plum Blossoms in the Snow [Suegiku]
This is also available on AO3.
"Tecchou, can you pass me the sugar?", I asked and was holding my hand open. Without saying anything, he placed the pot in my hand. "Thank you. However, why are you so quiet? I mean, your breathing and your pulse are both annoying but also faster than usual. That's irritating, so change it."
"It's not Tecchous pulse, Jouno", Teruko-Sans sudden answer startled me. "Since when are you here? I haven't heard your steps." "Because you walked after me in the room. I was here the whole time while you were once again talking to yourself", I heard a cup getting placed down, was it hers or was someone else besides the three of us here? "I'm not talking to myself, I was talking to Tecchou. You didn't notice him? He's unusual quiet but you still have two functioning eyes to see him, don't you?"
"Jouno, Tecchou is dead."
I couldn't help but let out a laugh. "You really thought you can fool me with such joke, hm? There is no way my senses can be fooled like that and you should know that by now. Am I right, Tecchou?", I turned around to the spot where I assumed he would stand but he kept quiet. "Could you do me a favor and touch your earring? I would like to hear the bell", Teruko interrupted the silence. I couldn't make any sense of this request but I lifted my hand until I touched my earlobe. After checking my other ear, reality has caught up on me.
I'm not wearing my earring since Tecchou died.
Without saying anything, I lowered my hand and took one of the two cups instead. With him gone, there was no need to prepare two cups of coffee. "You keep repressing his death, don't you? Must've been quite a shock that he died because-" "Silence!" My shouting interrupted Terukos sentence. "I don't want to hear any word about it out of your mouth." Before she could respond anything, I rushed out of the kitchen to lock myself in my room.
With my back pressed tightly against the door, I kept taking deep breathes. "Calm down, Jouno. Keep it in", I kept repeating in my mind. There was it again, the scent. His scent. "Tecchou", I whispered as my knees gave in. With my fingers buried in my thighs, I gave the tears the permission to run down my cheeks.
"Why are you such an idiot! You shouldn't have searched for me! Why! Even now you annoy me, leaving me with this unbearable pain", nothing but muttering came out of my mouth. "I hate you for making me love you so much."
After a while of quietly crying, I got up and fixed my clothes. With my left hand, i searched for the shelf next to my door. As soon as I got it, I grabbed the sword on there with my right hand. "Plum blossoms in the snow", I gave out quietly, my voice cracking in the middle from my breakdown. It wasn't just any sword, it belonged Tecchou. Thanks to his blade, I know exactly how he died.
Thanks to this young boy who found me. The boy who didn't know me, yet he offered his help and his life to help in finding me. The boy who lead me to an explanation on how Tecchou died. The boy I tried to kill for not protecting the person who stole my heart.
The boy who's name was Kenji.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"Kenji-Kun!", I screamed as I saw the blonde boy landing harshly on the floor. My blade was rushing towards the enemy, causing them to escape. "Tecchou-San, I don't think we will find this Jouno-person if we have to fight here. Why don't you go first and I will take care of this matter here?", the blonde boy smiled at me as I pulled him back on his legs. "I'd rather not leave you here on your own", a frown appeared on my face, yet this boy was still smiling.
"Don't worry about me. I know this Jouno means a lot to you, so you should find him soon. We'll meet again after it's over", Kenji gave me a soft pat on the shoulder before running towards the enemy. After a slight bow, I continued my way, away from the blonde detective and the fight. "If I could only hear as good as him", I sighed.
On my way to find Jouno, I passed by a small park. It wasn't any park, it was the one where Jouno won against me for the first time. The way he had pinned me down, my sword laying out of range, so I couldn't do anything besides laying there. It was the day I swore myself to workout in order to be able to lift Jouno anytime. There was no way I would let him get me this flustered ever again. If I would be able to lift him down, I would be also able to carry him in case of an emergency.
The thought of him being injured and I am unable to carry him was too painful to accept.
A slight smile went over my lips. He thought he would stop me by stepping on my back whenever I was doing push-ups in front of him. Little did he know it was intentional. There was no better way to train to lift his weight by lifting him as a person. After all weight is weight, yet it makes a major difference in how the weight is placed.
I shook my head, enough dreaming. There was still enough time to do so as soon as Jouno was in safety. A group of vampires were nerby. Should I kill them, should I let them be? They caused no trouble on their own and I saw no one being in danger nearby either, so I let them be. There was no way Jouno was there either, I can't feel his presence. He must be somewhere else, I just know it.
But where is 'somewhere'?
I took a deep breath and kept the air in my lungs for a moment. "Your breath and pulse are both annoying, please do your best to stop", I heard Jounos voice in my head and pushed the air out again. "I won't stop breathing until I found you, Jouno. I promise", I whispered into the nothing. "I will find you even if it's the last thing I will do."
How long has it been since I last saw a living being? How long has it been since I parted ways with Kenji? Is he still alive? He's strong, I'm sure he's still alive. Truly a smiling sunshine, yet so unbelievably strong. The Detective Agency really has a good person with him in their team. I stopped walking for who knows how long and pulled an egg out of my pocket. With a sigh, I took a bite. Even something so simple as an egg made me think of Jouno.
There was no way I would believe I would ever think that but I miss his threats. Not necessarily because I wanted to be threatened or even get told to die but simply because hearing his voice gave me a feeling of safety, knowing he's alive and well enough to express his playful hatred towards me. I know he never meant it, he was a good person. A cold but kind soul, misunderstood by many.
Another sigh escaped my throat. I miss him.
As soon as I cleaned my hands on my uniform, I started walking again. It was calm, too calm and I didn't like it. My hand was resting on my sword, ready to pull it anytime. Soon enough, I should be proven right: A small group of people came rushing towards me, some of them were carrying weapons. There wasn't an order to fight civilization but in order to keep my own life, I have to fight them one way or another.
My body freezed in the moment I heard a little sound. There was no way- Could it be- No, I would never mistaken this sound! But why don't I sense Jouno? A stinging pain in my arm pulled me quickly out of my thoughts: One out of the group has cut my arm with a broken bottle. I quickly drew my sword and ended the person just as quick.
"Tell me where Jouno is!"
No answer. No answer? There is no way! I need to know. "I ask you again: Where is Jouno? I know you've met him, I can hear his bell with you." Instead of a proper answer, the small group came rushing all at once to me. Normally I would be able to take them down without trouble but the little sound of his bell distracted me way too much. Suddenly the sound stopped and I saw the little red string on the floor.
It took only a few seconds to take out the enemy with my ability and soon enough I was holding the small object in my hands. It was indeed the just too familiar little golden bell on the red string that was always attached to Jounos ear. I didn't see him in the group but his earring was with them, then where is he? Was he- No, he can't be dead. I can't allow it.
My eyes kept staring at the earring as something dripped on my hands. First it was a clear drop, then another, then a red drop joined. I looked around but there was no one, so I checked my face. Turns out that I was both crying and injured. Not only my cheek was cut but also several, differently deep injuries across my body. How didn't I notice any of them?
I shook my head, it didn't matter. All that matters right now is that Jouno is most likely near and needs me, so I have to find him. A deep breathe of mine caused a stinging pain in my chest but I ignored it. It won't be too bad, I will take care of it later. My hand embraced his earring, keeping it save inside my fist and I just started running. "Jouno! Jouno, can you hear me?", I screamed from the top of my lungs, ignoring every pain that was rushing through my body.
Just as I felt as if my lungs were collapsing, I stopped running and calling his name. Coughing took over me, making it hard for me to catch a breathe after all. It seemed like an eternity before I got proper air back in my lungs. With my fist, I wiped away the blood from my lips. My eyes were on the blood on my fist, the fist that kept Jounos earring save.
Why did you lose it? Was it a sign for me, so I could find you?
The scenerey was quite beautiful, a bridge to watch the sun shining between the cherry blossoms and watch them sink onto the water. "Your ability is called plum blossoms in the snow, yet I've never seen any plum blossoms in snow", I heard Jounos voice in my head. He said it a few years ago, while we were standing on this very bridge. Back then I looked at him, doubting his very words.
"You have never seen anything, Jouno", I whispered while watching a leaf joining the water. It was my respond back then, we both laughed afterwards. It was the day I promised myself I'll make sure he will be able to meet plum blossoms and soon after this, I had the chance to get him to a place. I will never forget the gentle smile he had on his lips when he took their scent in. It soon vanished because he caught me chuckling to myself and asked what was so funny.
"You were so beautiful, I had to take a picture. I hope you don't mind", I explained a bit flustered back then. Ever since then it was my background, I never dared to change it. Sometimes I wish I could give him my eyes, so he could witness the beauty of nature. Yet he doesn't need eyes, Jouno simply has his own ways to intake his surroundings.
"Your hair is soft", he once told me after we were drinking together. "You think so?", was my response. "It's almost surprisingly soft, especially given it is your hair. It does seem a little messy, do you mind if I brush it?" He didn't even waited for my answer, he just grabbed a brush and started brushing my hair. His finger went gently through my hair strands, almost as if he viewed it as too precious. It was still embarrassing when Tachihara rushed in the room and saw us like that. On the other hand: Neither of us ever left a single word about it, so it probably made no change after all.
Another sigh escaped my lungs. Just where are you, Jouno?
Suddenly I've got an idea, it was entirely crazy yet it might actually work. I breathed in as deep as I possibly could and screamed his name from the top of my lungs. It ended with me coughing up blood again but I didn't care. As I came past a bush, I spit out the blood in it and continued my search. Where are you? How far did they take you? Are you still alive?
"Tecchou!", it was him. Jouno was alive! I started running towards his location as fast as I could. As soon as I came across the corner, something pierced through my abdomen. "You're so desperate, it's embarrassing", in shock, I looked up into an unfamiliar face. "You really believe Jouno is still alive?", the stranger laughed, pushing the object deeper in my body. "Where is Jouno?", was all I replied while I grabbed the pole in both hands to stop them from moving it.
"He's dead."
"No. No, he is not. Jouno is alive, I know it!", anger took over my body and as I grabbed my sword, I pulled out the metal out of my torso. With an unsteady hand, I lead my sword but it was too late. The small group vanished, leaving no trails whatsoever. With my back against the wall for stabilation, I took a closer look on my stomach: Its affect on the surface was rather small but depth was a different matter. Based on the blood stain on the pole, it must have pierced through my entire body.
Is that why we have to wear red uniforms, so you won't see the blood on it as easy?
I smiled slightly while I sat down on the ground. My eyes were focusing on the sky. No sign of Jouno except his earring and people who seem to know more than they want to tell. How did they manage to copy his voice? Was it a recording, where they able to mimic him? Maybe they were actually right and they recorded him screaming for me to help but I'm not there to help. If that's the case.. Then he must have died with hatred towards me in his heart.
Did my incompetence kill you, Jouno? If so, please forgive me once we meet again.
"I'm sorry, Jouno. I need to rest for some moments, then I will find you. Even when it kills me", I whispered and laid down on my back. My fist tightly closed around his earring, resting on my chest. "Just wait for me, I will find you. I accept that you hate me but please let me find you." I closed my eyes and his face showed up on my inner eye. He was smiling at me, cherry blossoms flying through the air. "You seem to regret something", he chuckled.
"Only that I never told you how much I desired to call you mine."
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"Tecchou!", I called out. He was somewhere nearby but I couldn't figure out where exactly and he wouldn't answer me either. The injury on my knee didn't make the search more comforting either but I have to find him. After all, his scream sounded as if he was actually searching for me. However, it was stupid to shout this loud, his position could be easily detected.
With a sigh, I walked past a street, only to walk back to it. A too familiar scent was coming from here. "Tecchou", I called out again and walked along the street, only to trip over something. After crouching down, I checked the floor with my hands which came across the object I triped over. Under closer inspection, it turned out to be a sword, covered in some sticky liquid. According to its scent, it must be blood.
Did Tecchou kill people here?
"Tecchou." No Reaction, not even a single sound. He would never leave his sword behind, what happened here? An unpleasant feeling was coming up in my chest. With the sword in my hands, I got back up and continued to walk again, this time slower than before. Only a few steps later, I unintentionally kicked something. How didn't I notice there was something?
As I tried to walk past it, I noticed there was also something, so I crouched back down and started touching whatever was blocking my way. It felt soft, yet strong. Something was wrapped in fabric but the material felt too familiar. It struck me after taking off my glove to get a better feeling: It was the same material as the uniform of the Hunting Dogs!
"Tecchou, get up. Stop slacking off", I scolded him but I didn't understand how I didn't notice him. "Tecchou!" Still no reaction. I followed the fabric with my hands and as it seemed it was his thigh that was blocking the path. It must have been his torso when the fabric started to become as sticky as his sword and the uneasy feeling became overwhelming.
"Tecchou?", I said much softer than before and kept following the fabric until I reached his face. My bare hand was covering his cheek. It was wet but not in the sticky way of the blood. Did he cry? Everything was so deafening quiet, too quiet. "Tecchou?", my voice nothing more than a whisper. I couldn't hear his pulse nor his breathing as usual and it just fed the overall discomfort.
As a pathetic attempt of hope, I pressed my ear on his chest in hopes of hearing just a slight hint of breathing, but everything was silent. A sudden thud followed by the ringing of a bell cut the silence. A bell? I felt along Tecchous lower part of his chest, the arm that was laying here wasn't laying on his chest anymore.
Following his shoulder down his arm, I found his hand. It was formed into a fist and after opening the hand, I heard another bell. My hand glided gently into is hand and came in touch with a just too familiar object: It was my earring. It was ripped off by the people who kidnapped me, I thought I'd never see it again.
"You were holding onto it until your last breath..", my voice cracked mid-way through the sentence and I was unable to hold back the tears. "Tecchou, please", I begged, kneeling next to his body, tears falling down in an uncontrollable manner. My bare hand was holding his hand and the other hand was buried in his uniform. "Tecchou, please! Don't leave me, I need you."
"If I only would've been more careful.. If I wouldn't have been kidnapped..", I cried out loud. The pain was going from my chest through my whole body. I will never be able to hear your voice again, your laughter, your heartbeat. Your stupid food combinations that were always pestering the air. Your sword that always poked my ass, so I would give you the attention you want.
Why did you have to leave me alone?
"Excuse me sir, who are you?", a sudden voice appeared behind me. "What?", I replied and got up, ready to pull my sword. "I asked who you are. You're with my friend and he seems injured. I need to protect my friend", the voice seemed rather young. "Your friend? What is your business with Tecchou?"
"I helped him searching for someone."
My body froze for a moment. "Searching for someone?", I repeated his answer. "Yes, sir. My friend lost someone very dear to him and so I offered my help. I told him to leave, so he can find the person and they can be happy together. You see, my friend told me he adores his friend a lot and would do anything for his friends well being, so I have to ask you again of who you are, so I can protect my friend from you", the stranger explained carefully yet in a friendly manner.
Without thinking twice, I attacked him with my sword. "It's your fault", I whispered as my sword got blocked. "Excuse me, why are you attacking me? And why are your eyes closed? You remind me like my coworker in the Agency", this person said. The agency? Tecchou had business with them? "What do you mean 'why are my eyes closed?' ? I'm blind. And if you wouldn't have told Tecchou to leave, he wouuld be still alive!", I pulled my sword away, just to attack even stronger.
"You are blind? Oh, then you must be Jouno, right?"
"How do you know my name?", I asked and turned around, this guy was no longer in front of me. "Tecchou was searching for you, he told me how much he likes you and how much he needs you by your side again. He never described how you looked like. My name is Kenji and you said Tecchou is dead?", Kenjis voice still seemed unchanged, while my mind was racing.
"I'm sorry that I wasn't by Tecchous side this whole time but his injury seems to be quite huge, so I don't think it would've made a difference if I was there. Do you want me to describe his wounds, so you have a better image about his condition?", I only nodded and followed his voice. "Be careful, you almost stepped on his hand."
After we both sat down, Kenji started to explain: "His right cheek has a vertical cut but it doesn't seem to be very deep. The petals on his left cheek are a little messed up, it seems like he had cried. His uniform has been cut on different places all across his body, so I can't judge how deep they are. The biggest wound is on his stomach. Guessing by our surroundings, he has been stabbed with a long metal pole. The injury is so bad, it caused a huge blood puddle here."
"I understand, thank you. And.. I'm sorry for attacking you", I said quietly, not really sure what else to say. Tecchou was dead, this guy just described it to me. "Oh, don't worry. I hold onto your sword before something could have happened. Are you okay, do you need a hug?", before I could answer, I was already pulled into a tight embrace. His body felt warm, causing the tears to run down my cheeks again.
After a while of just crying while this person were just holding and stroking my back, I calmed down again. "Tecchou told me a lot about you, especially how much he likes you", Kenji chuckled as he let go of me again. "He did?", I was a little surprised. He really walked around, blabbering about me? "Hmhm!", I heard rushed movements.
"He said people misunderstand you a lot and that you're actually very nice. He also said that you look cute when you smile and even more when you laugh. According to him, hearing you laugh makes his day already much better. In a way like sunshine during a rainy day causes rainbows", I could hear a big smile in Kenjis words but I felt like crying again. Why did he never told me any of this?
"When I asked Tecchou how he got so incredibly strong, he said he's been training all the time, so in moments when you need to be carried, he can carry you. That's really cute", Kenji kept on talking but I didn't pay attention. He kept training just to carry me? All the meetings where he was doing push ups and I stepped on him, it was simply his plan? When he asked me to to sit on his back for more workout, he simply did it to work with my weight?
Why was this sweet gesture just so hurtful?
Suddenly, Kenji took my hand and placed something in it. "I have an idea. The agency has contacts to an ability user who can see the past in objects, we can take Tecchous sword to him and he can describe you in detail what exactly happened. I'm sure he would've wanted you to know what happened. And while you carry his sword, I will carry him, so he can have a proper funeral."
"I don't think it's a good idea if I would interfere with the Agency", I mumbled but got interrupted. "Nonsense. I mean, sure, in any other cases, the agency would probably be against it but this is a special case and I'm sure everyone will understand you. After all, anyone who would be in Tecchous position would've wanted the person they loved to know how they died." "The person they loved?"
"Oh, yes. Tecchou loved you since a long time but was always too scared to tell you."

okay so awhile ago @zukkaoru and i made a nerdy prudes must die au for bsd and we kind of went off with it and the soundtrack is stuck in my head so look at who would be who (explanations under the cut):
kunikida - grace chasity
yosano - steph lauter
dazai - pete spankoffski
ranpo - richie lipschitz
poe - ruth fleming
chuuya - max jägerman
fukuchi - wiggly
bram - nibbly
sigma - blinky
fyodor - tinky
nikolai - pokey
gin - kyle
tachihara - jason
jouno - detective shapiro
tecchou - officer bailey
mori - mayor lauter
elise - miss tessburger
cheerleaders - higuchi (brenda), naomi (stacy), kajii (brooke)
kyouka - reese
jun’ichiro - joey's bbq monologue guy
atsushi - bbq jon/trevor
kenji - bbq angela
akutagawa - bbq mariah/caitlyn
mushitaro - corey dorris' cop (f-ing transcendent cop)
mark - dan reynolds
john - donna
hirotsu - miss mulberry
nathaniel - boy jerry
guy koyou tried running away with - mark chasity
koyou - karen chasity
margaret - bryce’s reporter
louisa - paul
lucy - emma
kunikida as grace bc he has all his ideals and he's just so... idk how to describe it in a way that doesn't sound mean bc i mean it so affectionately but he has the vibes of slowly losing his beans. also... just PICTURE him singing "dirty girl" YOOOOO and like if you ship kunichuu, then it's also kunikida freaking out bc he's thinking romantically about someone from the mafia. also he deserves to go wild <3
yosano as steph bc Vibes <333 dazai as pete (and this is not shipping yosano and dazai... they're just friends in this) bc he's smart and would 100% get all caught up in something like this also bc we're making chuuya max so like they're rivalry tehe. now i know you could argue that atsushi should be pete and akutagawa should be steph... but this stemmed from kunichuuzai, sooooo. dazai could also be steph, but we thought that yosano fit steph better than pete
ranpo as richie bc there was literally no good place for ranpo. he's too smart. but richie is also smart and it'd just be silly. maybe now ranpo can live (for a lil bit oops) the childhood he never had...
poe as ruth bc he would KILL "just for once" look me in the face and tell me i'm wrong
chuuya as max bc gravity powers and dead!max's powers are similar, chuuya has the anger issues to be max, plus he and kunikida would get to sing "dirty girl" together. i also feel like "literal monster" could be a song in reference to chuuya and i feel like (in a kind of self-deprecating way), chuuya would sing that about himself
we made the decay of angels the lords in black bc it FIT!!! fukuchi as wiggly bc leader, bram as nibby bc... vampire... mouth..., sigma as blinky bc they've got eyes on the casino and know everything about all the staff and customers and such, fyodor as tinky bc tinky is prolly the most sadistic one, and nikolai as pokey bc nikolai is most likely to cause a musical apocalypse
gin as kyle and tachihara as jason is just so silly~ and hirotsu as miss mulberry bc he's trying his best to wrangle a bunch of depressed teenagers all the time. higuchi, naomi, and kajii are the cheerleaders (we invented a third one specifically for kajii) bc we think they'd be good cheerleaders lol
jouno as shapiro bc VIBES and wants to uphold the law and tecchou as bailey would just be SO FUNNY and they would just annoy each other soooooo much! we made mushitaro corey dorris' cop bc it would be funny
mori as the mayor is great bc yosano is steph... and that's just depressing ya know? and then elise as tessburger for obvious reasons
we just thought mark and john would be a funny dan and donna tbh. margaret as bryce's reporter specifically so she can blame nathaniel hawthorne. nathaniel as boy jerry bc ViRgiNiTy RoCkS
jun'ichiro as joey's bbq guy bc let's be real... jun'ichiro is an AMAZING actor. kenji HAD to be in th ebbq monologues bc cows. then akutagawa is a theatre kid i know this he told me personally (or he would be if he wasn't in the mafia and had a family and went to school). atsushi is kind of there just so we can hear him say, "my barbecue" the way jon does lol

what do you think bsd is trying to say about war? do you have any other thoughts about political themes present in the story?
oh i have,,, thoughts,, for sure. also these are more loose threads that have been floating around in my head more than a concrete thesis so sorry if they dont make much sense as a whole
one thing i think is crucial to discussing bsd as a political story is to look at which countries' authors asagiri choses to include in the story.
obviously the main cast is japanese, but the other prominent characters come from usa and russia, and if you also take in characters from the light novels or ones, who have been foreshadowed to be important (like agatha), france and the uk come to mind. those are all states with imperialist past/present, and while there are none morally pure countries this specific selection is still pretty intense all things considered. many of the authors included in bsd were also involved politically one way or another (most had been active during the first half of the 20th century, and wrote about war one way or another)
the imperialism isnt really touched upon, unfortunately so, but ( and maybe this is just me being hopeful) i like to think its less about asagiri not seeing it and more about him not wanting to open another sensitive topic in an already complicated work of fiction.
ultimately i'd say bsd is anti-war. that's the most prevailing political theme, and one that has been slowly revealing itself and becoming more prominent the further we go into the story. worth noting is how elements that could've (and maybe should have) been shown as explicitly political avoided this framing in earlier parts of the story (fukuzawa's old profession, kunikida's ideals), but ig there's still time for that. the anti-war sentiment ties back to a lot of the works that the abilities are named after, esp in the agency. no longer human, thou shalt not die, the makioka sisters (tanizaki's light snow) are all prime examples (and kunikida's ability could technically be put under this too depending on how you look at it, since his war journalism is what made him a prominent literary figure). even if some of the authors had some questionable opinion's irl, the parts that asagiri choses to include always come back to the horrors of war.
decay of angels is another thing, given it's named after mishima's last novel, one that he left to his publisher on the same day he started a coup trying to restore the emperor of japan and commited seppuku. there was a theory i saw a while back that said bram wasnt actually a doa member, and the 5th person is yet to be revealed, and it'd be really interesting if we got mishima in bsd but he's still to this day a pretty polarizing figure (understandably so) and im not sure if asagiri would want to take that step, since it'd be a point of no return in terms of explicit politics in the story. and he's been pretty timid with that i mean look at the way he handles police brutality (cops in yokohama being portrayed as incompetent yet ultimately good people, jouno going from prime example of someone knowingly abusing their power to apparently caring abt the innocents, and this is obv a different, more complicated topic so uhh idk maybe ill talk abt it some other time adgsfgagd). idk it just seems like he's afraid to really push the ideas forwards, keeps them palatable to the general public although idk if this is a concious choice or not. im willing to give asagiri the benefit of the doubt bc of how he handles fukuchi though. people hate him bc??? idk he's not a twink and he killed someone ig but personally i adore him, goofy aah guy imo. it'd be easy to write him off as just an autoritarian crazy guy who wants to take control of the world for unspecified "greater good" but the arguments he makes are generally pretty compelling! and not just to readers, we see atsushi questioning the way world works and government's role after listening to fukuchi explain himself. its fukuchi's methods that are questionable not the ultimate goal of state abolition. and we still dont really know what his ultimate reason for doing all this is, just that he claims it's not revenge on fukuzawa, so im curious how this is going to get handled.
and the last thing is the brief anticapitalism theme in the guild arc but again, its like asagiri gave up on it before it became too prominent. fitzgerald is the ultimate capitalist and we see this esp in relation to steinbeck, whose dislikes list finansists in the enligh translation and capitalists in the polish one (no idea what is listed in japanese exactly). but fitzgerald is ultimately sort of redemed, with his (and poe's) wealth treated as a gag rather than a human rights violation
those are all the things that have been ping ponging around in my head and i hope this is in any way at least a little bit understandable. there are some things here that deserve a post of their own but id have to reread at least the last few arcs to talk about them in depth.

the hunting dogs are so fascinating tbh. like the core of them all seems to be about... idk if justice is the word, but like. doing the right thing. putting it above their feelings, usually. on the other hand, jouno and teruko seem to also have a sadistic streak to them (more prominent with jouno ofc), which should go against this sentiment, but actually serves to feed it.
it's interesting that fukuchi asked jouno to join the doa's cause, when at its core it WAS about justice and greater good etc. but. its process is so harmful that tecchou or teruko would likely not put up with it. at the end of the day, we saw that jouno wouldn't either.
this brings me to my next point - the double agents. starting with fukuchi since we already brought him up
i think. if you look at the hunting dogs as a vessel for justice and help. fukuchi fits right in - it's at his core as well, and he was willing to get hurt and eventually die over it. it's hard to pinpoint the core of the doa given what a mishmash of goals they have, but it's easy to see him stand out from them regardless. even in a design way, they all stand out and have really unique looks, while he's literally always in uniform. i wouldn't be surprised if that's a part of what i'm trying to say here - fukuchi belong in the hunting dogs, he is undoubtedly one of them.
meanwhile, tachihara... never seemed to put any emphasis on the same things? i don't think he has bad intentions or likes to harm anyone (he could've killed yosano but decided not to - not just giving up on his revenge plan, but technically his mission as well), but his whole Thing isn't really about justice or even particularly helping others. and i think it's like a thematic way to show that he really does belong in the mafia. his arc is more reminiscent of elememts in chuuya's or akutagawa's stories, for example, about belonging and finding a place and a group for himself. it's no wonder he ended up choosing it and was willing to go against fukuchi - their goals and values just don't align at all, even narratively speaking
i wish we got to see more of them. i think their goal is a bit basic but that's what makes it so flexible, as you can see in the differences between them, which are precisely what makes them interesting. there's a lot you can do with them, esp in contrast to the ada's goal of first and foremost helping and saving people (rather than maintaining a more nebulous concept like justice or law)
i dunno maybe i'm forgetting stuff here lol in which case forgive me, it is currently 3 am. maybe in the future i'll go over every chapter with them and phrase all this more coherently as well 🫡

I wanted to write something really quick for Jouno's birthday ngl, so here's some really cheesy dogshit
Tumblr media
Happy Birthday to the blind king himself (ugh I miss him)
Scenario: Calling Jouno while he's at work. It becomes a little silly.
As much as Jouno hated the telephone, he hated the sounds of his coworkers even more.
What were they yelling for? It's four in the morning.
Who's even up at four in the morning?
Apparently them.
Every day. For the last 2 weeks.
Usually, he could have slept in for at least 3 more hours. Have a coffee that didn't taste like piss and tinfoil (everyday he hated whoever made the coffee in the lounge, no one would tell him the name of the moron who cheaped out on it. They weren't safe from him.) and get to tell his woe's to someone who didn't have rocks for brains.
But no. He was stuck here, at HQ, listening to reports that led their current case to nowhere.
Which led to yelling. Always yelling.
So answering the phone was honestly rather refreshing.
"..."
He waited a second. Why should he, of all people, speak first?
"Hello? Is Jouno there?"
Jouno felt time pause for a moment. He stopped, listening to the other members in the room.
They seemed rather distracted, not truly paying attention to what he was doing. Teruko and Tachihara were arguing and Tecchou was...he smelt gross, so probably working out.
"Sorry, who is this?"
He really hoped he was hearing wrong.
"Jouno, c'mon you know who I am. Why, is something wrong?"
When did you have their number? As far as he recalled, only government officials were ever given this number, and even that is far and few in between. He never let you know much about his work.
"I'm not trying to buy anything."
To Jouno's dismay, that failed miserably. Instead, all he heard was your laughter on the other side of the phone. Did you really think his misery was funny?
"If I find you, I'll kill you."
Jouno made threats as a part of his day-to-day life, it was easy to fake it towards you. But a part of him felt how he was cracking easily, hearing your obvious giggles as they thought of the next line to say.
"Ok ok. Sorry I know you're busy at work right now. But I really did call for something really important."
Taking a moment, Jouno sighed as he leaned against the small desk that held the phone. He waited a bit, listening to see if the others in the room were still ignoring him.
As much as he hated it, they seemed to actually notice that the "bad-things-are-happening-please-help" phone was called. His luck really is immaculate.
"How did you get this number again?"
There was a guilty laugh on your end. What had you so happy?
"Some other day, maybe. But that's not important! Jouno."
Jouno gave a very long sigh.
"Jouno, today is your birthday!"
"Yes."
He was really hoping he was as good of an actor as he thought he was, because he couldn't help how his heart was beating twice as fast at the thought of you remembering something so small.
"Are you coming home tonight?"
There was a pause.
Jouno didn't want to respond, because he hated the answer. Truthfully, he didn't know when he would have a 'normal' (for a hunting dog) workday.
He didn't even want to admit out loud how much he missed you.
"Oh, ok. You know, after your 'case' is over, we should get to celebrating. I have the perfect gift for you already, which definitely involves no clothes."
"No."
There was a pause on your end. He hated telling you no. Weird, since frankly breaking people's hearts was his favorite past time.
"Good idea. Uh..."
Jouno forced himself to listen back into the conference room, which was now weirdly quiet. There was also a small heartbeat very very close to him.
That was not a good sign.
"Thank you. Um."
He turned his head, bell-jingling against the phone, as he knew Teruko was looking up at him -probably with a shit eating grin.
"...I love you."
Sighing, he ate his pride, turning away.
"I love you too, Jouno. Happy birthday."
You sang it, not forcing him to endure the entire song. He hoped he was tall enough and facing enough away that Teruko couldn't see the smile on his face hearing those words.
When he hung up the phone, hearing the click and shut off the landline, he was forced to face his reality.
The one where he couldn't stop hearing his coworkers giggling. Particularly Teruko's, but even Tecchou was laughing somewhere deep in that stupid body of his that managed to breathe air.
He wanted to kick him.
"I didn't know you were in a relationship."
Tachihara said this nervously, but still with a smile in his voice.
"I'm not. I don't know who that was or how they got that number."
It was hard to say this seriously, as Jouno could feel the red creeping up on his face.

BSD Chapter 100.5
“At the Airport Part 9”
Another short chapter this month but we finally get to know more about Kenji’s past!
Tumblr media
Please note that I’m not a native speaker in either English nor Japanese so I may make some mistakes here and there. Just let me know if you spot any!
SPOILERS AHEAD
- Kenji suddenly gets stronger and throw the surprised Tecchou against a truck. He looks mad and keeps repeating “I have to save them” (TN: the object is not clearly stated in the original sentence. It could be him or her etc.) Even when Tecchou hits him on the face, the doesn’t even flinch.
- There is a flashback where Atsushi was talking to Kunikida about how all the scary guys seem to be very kind towards Kenji. Kunikida then told Atsushi that there is one unspoken rule in Yokohama “not to make Kenji angry”. Atsushi was surprised because Kenji is always very gentle. Kunikida then told him the story of a big flood that happened in a village in Northeast Japan. It was a biggest one in 50 years that they had to change the map of the area after that. However, the village itself was almost intact. Fukuzawa who went there to investigate, found out that the village were safe because right when the flood came, the mountain had somehow collapsed and changed the flow of the water. The foot of the mountain had completely disappeared as if it was chopped off by a giant. And the one who made it happen was a village boy, Kenji. He was the one who changed the shape of that mountain, with his bare hands. Later, Kenji said that he didn't remember anything at that time, after seeing his childhood friend buried alive under the flood. Kunikida says that Kenji's power is like the power of the angry, raging nature, and his gentle personality of him has been holding in in check. When the gentle Kenji is driven away by the anger and crisis, "that" will show up and erupt. And once he has erupted, noone will be able to stop him.
- Back to the present, Tecchou has been completely defeated by Kenji. He has a pillar falling on top of him and can't run away. He tells Kenji to kill him, because he realizes that he should have pursued justice after all, and that Jouno himself would never tell him to let go of the mission to come to his rescue. He says that this is the outcome he's got for misjudging his friend, misjudging justice and misjudging his opponent, and that he is no long qualified as a Hunting Dog.
- Kenji, instead, removes the debris on top of Tecchou and smiles at him, asking him to go look for Jouno together. Kenji says that when he thinks about it, he has no reason to get mad at Tecchou. He reaches his arm to Tecchou to help him get up, but ends up collapsing first. He smiles to Tecchou saying that he has overused his power and needs to rest a little bit. Tecchou is at his limit too, so they both collapse. Before losing consciousness, Tecchou says his name and asks for Kenji's. After knowing Kenji's name, Tecchou says that knowing that name is his big catch of the day.
The chapter ends here. It was so nice to see Tecchou and Kenji finally making up and I hope they can become good friends because both of them are very sincere and nice people.
Next chapter comes out on May 2, 2022.
Thank you for reading.

jouno angst p l e a s e
a/n: y'know i low key suck at angst but i really wanted to do this so...here have a lil scenario </3 used unreciprocated love as the theme
warnings: hhh jouno’s really mean in this one :’) being his usual dramatic sadistic self or whatever. i tried not to make the ending TOO angsty??
Tumblr media
you used the corner of your cape to wipe the blood off of your saber, looking down at the criminals you’d just killed with disgust. when would they all learn their lesson? you hoped it would be soon, since killing wasn’t your forte despite being the central part of your profession.
jouno was nearby, cleaning off his saber as well. the both of you were commonly dispatched together which, in your case, was both a blessing and a curse.
you stole a glance over at him, only to find that his face was neutral and unreadable. it tended to usually be when he was around you, for some reason. you weren't sure whether to take this as a good or bad sign.
“could you please calm that racing heart of yours?? or should i silence it for you?” jouno said bluntly, sliding his saber back into its scabbard.
you jumped in surprise at the sound of his voice, before taking a shaky breath to try to lower your pulse. you could hear it pounding in your ears, and instantly felt embarrassed knowing he’d heard it as well.
swallowing your nerves, you pushed your own saber back into its scabbard as well before turning to face him. “we should probably head back now…?” you offered.
“‘probably’ is an understatement. we’re already going to be late to the meeting at this point.” jouno turned on his heel and pushed past you, leaving you to scramble to catch up.
despite the fact that both of you would be late, neither seemed to be in a hurry on the walk back to base. you and jouno walked side-by-side in silence, maintaining a leisurely pace. the unsaid words you’d been meaning to say to him for weeks swelled up in your chest, making it hard to breathe. should you take your shot now? your mind raced with nervous thoughts as the silence slowly started to suffocate you.
“i know what you have to say, so spit it out already.” jouno interrupted the solitude, sounding annoyed. you looked at him in a panic; how did he always seem to know what you were thinking??
“um...” you scrambled for an excuse, back tracking on your plan. now wasn’t a good time to confess to him, not after he’d called you out like that...
but then again, when would be a good time? seemingly never...so why not go for it now?
clenching your hands into fists so they’d stop shaking, you drew a breath before saying what had been on your mind for ages: “i was just wondering if you’d want to spend some time together outside of work. maybe we could get coffee or-”
jouno abruptly stopped walking and you bumped into him, not having expected him to stop. “oh! i’m sorry-” you stammered, feeling your heart sinking in your chest. you shouldn’t have said anything, how could you be so stupid?? your thoughts screamed.
jouno smiled, before laughing lowly to himself. you watched fearfully, dreading his reply.
“i’m not entirely sure what possessed you to think it would ever be appropriate to ask me that, y/n.” shaking his head in amusement, he took several steps forward, closing the gap between the two of you. “it’s ironic that you thought i didn’t know already. after all, i’m forced to listen to your insufferable erratic heartbeat every damn day.”
“i-...” your mouth opened to speak but no sound came out. while you hadn’t been entirely sure of what jouno’s reaction would’ve been, you’d never expected it would be like this. you found yourself at a total loss for words, and could hear your pulse thrashing in your ears again.
“you’re a nuisance. and quite honestly, i couldn’t care less about you.” he leaned over you with a threatening smile, tracing his index finger along your jaw to tilt up your head.
it’d be a lie to say that his presence didn’t affect you. even now and in this context, his proximity to you had your stomach twisted into knots.
“oh…” was all you were able to get out, your voice small and shaky. from the way his smile grew, jouno only seemed to take delight in this.
you looked absolutely heartbroken, and he was loving every second of it.
you winced as jouno suddenly grabbed a fistful of your hair, using it as leverage to throw you to the ground. you hissed in pain, bringing your hands up to your stinging scalp. from your spot on the ground, you watched in confusion and trepidation as he gracefully drew his saber and placed it against your neck rather gently.
“quite honestly, i’d be doing everyone a favor here. you have no true useful qualities...hell, you struggle to cut down criminals even when your job calls for it. i’ll never understand how you were recruited to be in this unit, but regardless, you’re getting on my last nerve.”
your eyes stung with barely contained tears as you came to the realization that jouno saw you as nothing more than another being to torment and derive his sadistic pleasure from. obviously you’d known he was like this, but you’d never thought he’d turn that behavior onto you. regret weighed heavy on your chest, and you mentally kicked yourself for being so naive.
“then do it.” you seethed, feeling your face flush in anger and embarrassment. you pushed your head forward so his saber dug slightly into your neck, drawing blood. “go ahead and do everyone that favor.”
you watched in mild surprise as jouno’s smile faded and his face became solemn. there was silence between the two of you until he drew back his saber, sliding it back into its scabbard with a metallic ping.
“get up. we were supposed to be back at headquarters ages ago.” jouno finally said bluntly, grabbing you by the collar of your uniform to pull you back up to your feet. you hurridly brushed away the blood trickling down your neck as you watched him begin walking ahead of you.
“we’re co-workers. we can’t be anything more.” jouno said over his shoulder, and you almost didn’t hear it since he’d gotten so far out of earshot. you blinked, contemplating the weight of his words and actions. he was just...so confusing.
the tears you’d been holding back clouded your vision, about to spill. a part of you wished he’d cut you down as he’d threatened to; anything to spare you from the pain you were now feeling.

I should clarify I don’t think this is how he’s going to die; bleeding out from Fukuchi’s sword. But if any character is going to die, Fukuzawa is the only one that makes sense.
Fukuchi might die at the end of the arc…? But no antagonist has actually been killed to my recollection except Gide (both him and Odasaku died), Gab (ability who took over from user), and Shibusawa (already dead). BSD antagonists tend to survive in the main manga storyline.
Ranpo will be fine lol I don’t think I even need to say that. He’s had character development in every arc of the story so far. He’s important. It would literally make no sense to kill him off.
Kunikida and Tanizaki are going to be fine. Kunikida has gone through continued challenges to his ideals for the last three arcs, and is set up to take over the Agency. Tanizaki has had zero development yet.
Neither Dazai nor Chuuya are going to die! They’re fine! It makes no sense to kill off Chuuya since he hasn’t really done much in the main manga, has had two books focused on his backstory and is Asagiri’s special little boy who he likes to torture. Dazai, the suicidal character searching for a reason to live, is not going to be killed off in the finding a reason to live story. Come on.
Sigma is fine. If Fyodor wanted him dead, he would be dead. Again, Sigma literally hasn’t done anything yet; let him have his moment! Sigma is also trying to find a home, which is in keeping with the “find the people and place where you can live” story.
We don’t even know Bram yet really. There’s so much left to explore with him.
Same goes for Fyodor, who I’m anticipating will continue to be the major antagonist of the series whole.
Any of the vampirized people - while I hope there will be some consequences - are probably fine too! That’s almost all of the Mafia, plus Jouno! For one thing, we’re still working on that payoff for all the sskk setup we’ve done this arc and the last. Akutagawa is still in there. It would be weird to finish off the main partnership of the series when they’ve been built up as key to defending the city. What’s more, there’s still a lot we have yet to explore with the Mafia, the old boss, and Mori. While I’m hoping for a shake up of the status quo, killing off everyone here would be. Weird.
See, BSD, being a story about finding a reason to live, is going to need a damn good reason to kill off any of its characters. It wouldn’t be done for shock value, or to subvert expectations just because. The only character who has actual reason to be killed off is Fukuzawa, and that is only because we spent the last arc building up Ranpo as the strongest Agency member, Yosano as the one who would do anything to protect it, and Kunikida as the next in command.
If Fukuzawa dies (not from the stab wound but probably in the very last act), it has the effect of shaking up the status quo, just like with the Port Mafia. While the Mafia scrambles with all its people but its leader is most likely safe, the Agency would have all its people but lost its leader. Atsushi can no longer turn to Fukuzawa for guidance. Ranpo is going to receive more character focus and either become his best self or his worst. Yosano might become a more prominent character, as the Agency is important to her. Kyouka potentially loses some of her protection (remember they’re covering for her past as an assassin). Kunikida is forced to step up and take the reins after having his ideals beaten down for the last few arcs. And if Fukuzawa really is a power limiter, then this could segue into (finally) a Tanizaki arc, who perhaps will demonstrate some new sides to him if All Men are Equal stops having an effect.
So. Let me be clear. If Fukuzawa dies I will be so so sad because I actually really like him a lot. But I do think if anyone is going to die… sorry man. (I should note a similar effect could be achieved if he was rendered comatose or something. So he still might not die.)
sorry guys I really do feel like narratively and thematically that Fukuzawa is going to win Asagiri’s favourite character award (death)

RECENT CHAPTER MANGA SPOILERS !!
working theories and questions on Bram's ability because I think we're over-estimating it (sorry bram I love you)
DISCLAIMER!! -I did research on this but some things may be incorrect because I didn't bother to go back and read the whole arc over again
topics covered (they are marked so you can scroll down and skip a section but you'll probably get the whole picture if you read it all):
theories on Bram's ability
are the effects permanent
can dazai nullify them
how does Fukuchi/fyodor control the vampires (blackmail..??)
raise the dead???
is bram like Lovecraft? (not an ability user at all?)
"deaths" and casualties
Akutagawa's death (mainly timing and possibilities)
Jouno's death and how it differs with Aku's
Chuuya and how he could've been infected
Tumblr media
theories on bram’s ability
okay, so I saw someone mention that people are being dramatic because when has someone with high importance ever died in BSD? and although I don't agree that we should rely on that fact to say that all the characters that "died" aren't dead, a lot of the people think that the characters that are now vampires, are a lost cause and I don't think that's the case (maybe I'm hanging to a sliver of hope idk humour me)
if we say that all the characters that where met with Bram's ability are truly dead, this is the list of dead characters we would have currently by the end of the arc:
Chuuya nakahara
Ryūnosuke Akutagawa
ichiyo higuchi
Truro hirotsu
gin Akutagawa
Michizō tachihara (not Bram's ability but still)
saigiku jono (not Bram's ability but still)
countless innocent citizens
and possibly more PM members we don't know about (like kouyu, Q, etc)
now I don't know about you but a lot of these characters seem pretty significant to me, not to mention some of the missing characters. now, my weak belief is that Bram's ability is like any other ability and dazai can nullify it.
if the effects were permanent then that would be granting bram such a significantly powerful ability, not to mention he can also somehow raise people from the dead to become vampires under his command AND the vampires have their abilities if they had any. which again is so formidable I don't think Asagiri would give one character THAT much power. like he can raise the dead AND control them so it’s like much more than it would be if all he could do was just raise the dead but no he can also control them.
even if bram wasn't a hybrid-type creature like Lovecraft he is still very powerful. the BSD fandom website says that Bram's ability is know to the governments of the world and that he's even one of the "Top Ten Calamities to Destroy the World" which means that the government was aware of bram even before the DoA arc which could be highly possible because my guess is that Fukuchi captured bram and is blackmailing him.
its also obvious that Bram's ability is infectious and spreads quickly. so if the government was aware of Bram and his ability then this type of thing has to have happened before, because bram has apparently lived for decades maybe even centuries so it could've been before the ADA was even formed. and with such a quick rate of infection to his ability they must have had to do something to cancel Bram's ability. and I know what some of you are thinking, the government could've just killed off the vampires really quickly, what if bram is like Lovecraft and not an "ability user" dazai can nullify (I would like to say that I think this is also quite possible because bram is a vampire and hasn't died like a normal human being with the circumstance of old age as far as we know but I can't quite pinpoint it but I don't think this is the case) , what if bram has to order his vampires to bite other people instead of it being the first instinct once you're bitten, and yeah I've thought of those theories too (I've been thinking about this for an embarrassingly long amount of time), and they are valid points but I don't think they're very likely or you wouldn't be reading this post right now.
so if bram is just like any other ability user, then dazai would touch Chuuya and boom he's back to normal!,,,, is my hope. I really don't know much about the workings on Nikolai's game and what Fyodor and dazai plan to do with their game partners, but I do know that Fyodor is on the same level, more or less, with dazai intellectually so if this were the case then he would do his best to keep Chuuya out of Dazai's reach. which comes to my next point, how is Fyodor controlling Chuuya? for all we know bram is the only one who can control his vampires (as the BSD fandom website says) but we see in multiple cases where the vampires are listening to others commands without bram present and active in the situation, like when Fukuchi is with his army in the airport, when Fukuchi orders vampire Akutagawa to take dying Jono away, when Fyodor is, apparently, controlling Chuuya's whereabouts. that means that bram also has the ability to pass the role of commanding to someone else, or multiple people, and that role won't come back to him (...?). because even in the recent chapters, Aya and bram are being chased by vampires so why wouldn't bram just make them stop? he seems to have a sort of friendship with Aya and all he wants in my opinion is to be done with this BS and go to sleep for a few centuries so why wouldn't he make it easier for himself and Aya to get away? its either that or the DoA members are communicating with each other in an unknown way and bram is being forced to listen to all the commands and command his vampires to do as the DoA say, but then Fukuchi could just ask him where he went when he went missing and why would bram not answer? he and Aya didn't have a connection when she just took off with his body.
so my thoughts are that if bram is like any other ability user, dazai can either nullify his entire vampire army by touching bram or in Chuuya's case he'll just touch one of the vampires and the one touched is the only one that will become normal again as long as the vampire wasn't dead before being bitten, otherwise I don't think that'll bring back the person.
"deaths" and casualties
I know what I said about the "deaths" above. I know I said that it would be a lot of significant people if they all did happen to be dead. but I honestly do think that Akutagawa is dead, and its taken me quite a while to just, accept it as an aku fan. there is honestly just no way that he could've been alive by the time bram bit him. because think about it logically, he's still human after all. there were many events going on from the time he was slashed to the time he was bitten, people found him dead in front of Fukuchi, Fukuchi moved him and had to convince bram to bite him. it wasn't as if he was bitten right after he was slashed and although his head wasn't clean off I don't think there's much of a chance that he could've still been alive by the time he got bit.
so if dazai were to nullify all the vampires, Akutagawa would just turn out to be a corpse is my best guess about what's gonna happen
on the other hand jouno's death is different in my eyes, because remember he wasn't bit and turned into a vampire from what we know. Fukuchi pretty much killed him and ordered vampire Akutagawa to take him away. my guess of what Fukuchi plans to do is not to turn Jouno into a vampire but to let him die off somewhere so that the other hunting dogs can't find him. this is because Fukuchi knows jouno's strengths and just exactly what he's capable of, and what he's not capable of, if he were turned into a vampire and was somehow turned back into human, Jouno would be an incredibly strong enemy for Fukuchi to have, since he now knows that Fukuchi is the leader of the DoA, and that he has/had bram under his control. plus even if he did turn him into a vampire after he died it would seem incredibly suspicious because Jouno has extremely inhuman abilities aside from his main ability, if the hunting dogs found out, or even someone in the government etc, they would think that someone very powerful would've killed him and they might suspect Fukuchi. whereas Akutagawa is already dead and his ability is also incredibly strong and useful, but there's quite a bit of disconnect from him and Fukuchi relationship wise.
but yeah I do think that both of them will be dead by the end of the arc which is really disappointing because they're both one of my favourites lol
now lets talk about our favourite ginger
see, I find it SO unbelievable that Chuuya was just,,, bitten like that. like stop thinking about Chuuya being a vampire for a second with me okay? and think about Chuuya instead. what do we know about Chuuya? he's quite literally a god. what do we know about Chuuya in battle? yeah, think about the man that LITERALLY stared at the face of his OWN terrifying ability and said "you know when its time to give up and go home? the time is never". tell me about the Chuuya that uses corruption when necessary in battle even though his only liability is dazai and he could kill himself in the process yet he still does it because its important. if you think for a second that Chuuya could be stopped by a couple of vampires, you are mistaken my friend. so here are the few ideas I have on how he got bit:
he didn't and its all a disguise as part of Dazai's plan (but that would be underestimating Fyodor and I do adore Fyodor so this is really a big IF)
he did get bit but its all a part of Dazai's plan
he was blacked out drunk and vamp aku just strolled over and took a bite (or he got captured idk)
mori (I only added him because I respect his gray area and his intellectual capabilities)
because no matter how many vampires there could've been, if Chuuya was right minded and conscious there is absolutely no way they could've even gotten a chance to put their hands on him, even with their abilities.
and Mori's just on the list because even though he's an absolute asshole-jerk-lowkey pedophilic piece of shit, he's a smart and logical absolute asshole-jerk-lowkey pedophilic piece of shit. the only thing I respect about mori is his intellectual ability to set aside his duties as a mafia boss and help the city and the people in it for the better good when the situations are dire, unlike the old mafia boss. so he could've had a hand in this like he did with Tachihara, but Tachihara did end up being dead by the end of it all so if this is the case, Chuuya's future isn't looking so bright.
so yeah, that's it for now. if you've come this far literally really appreciate it, I find it so hard that people actually like reading my thoughts since they're almost always shower thoughts that keep me up at night but I hope you enjoyed!

Will Jouno assist Fukuchi?
In ch 92, Fukuchi shows Bram to Jouno (though I'd say introduce would be a better way to describe it cause Jouno's blind but minor inconsequential details) and reveals that he is the mastermind behind the Agency being framed and asks Jouno to help him. Personally, I think that Jouno is just a bit more likely to form some kind of alliance with Fukuchi but not necessarily a full-on partnership, much less to the point where it'd be considered working more with Fukuchi as Kamui of the DOA than helping Fukuchi as Fukuchi himself or as the commander of the HD.
Also, I am using @buraihatranslations translation of ch 92, so that's where my exact phrasing for quotations and page counts are coming from. You can read the full translation here.
The main context of our focus
Tumblr media
“I’m the mastermind. Jouno, wouldn’t you like to assist me?” (p 19)
For starters, I don’t think Fukuchi is being a reckless idiot for saying this. Considering that he's literally Kamui, he obviously must’ve considered this as a calculated but worthwhile risk to take. As I’ve previously mentioned in my ch 89.5 cover art analysis, Jouno is the most on the fence of the HD in terms of supporting Fukuchi vs believing in the Agency’s innocence. In fact, as we learned in 92, he simply doesn’t care and can therefore be considered a (nearly) neutral party. Jouno is also basically a living breathing lie detector, so he can tell apart the likes of jokes and lies from the truth very easily. Jouno also cares primarily about being able to hear his victim’s suffering, regardless of who’s right or wrong or innocent or guilty (as he’s told Aya). It logically just makes the most sense for Fukuchi to try to get Jouno on his side out of all the HD because :
Teruko is a simp for Fukuchi but she still cares about civilians and being able to take pride in her job as an officer (Sky Casino)
Tachihara has already clearly established his doubts in the ADA being guilty in front of all of the HD (ch 89) and told Fukuchi that he sees himself as more Mafia than HD now (ch 89.5)
Tecchou has a very strong sense of justice and cares about fairness, so asking him to quite literally join the side of the terrorists would never work out and would essentially be a waste of both time and possibly personnel too
What does Jouno personally want?
As I've already briefly touched on (and presumably you already read ch 92 before this), Jouno has already stated his goals, which gives us a good sense of where he stands morally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I just want to hear the voice of someone’s suffering.” (p 9)
“To hurt people under the name of the law[,] corner them and hear their “sound” as they break.” (p 10)
Now that we’ve more than established that Jouno is in fact, a sadist, I do want to emphasize Jouno’s mention of the law. Not only does he enjoy making people suffer (specifically psychologically, as he’s mentioned before), but he specifically mentions that he wants to do it “under/in the name of the law”, meaning that he likely either only wants to do it in a “justifiable”/“excusable” way or that he doesn’t want or plan to be held accountable for his actions (or worse, both). Until we get a backstory reveal, there could be any number of reasons for him being this way. I think it’s fairly likely that he’s from a similar situation to Fukuchi (took part in the Great War, and the mental scarring of everything he experienced then caused him to find some sort of extreme and inhumane goal or enjoyment to cope with it all). So for example, he could have been drafted for the War because he’s an ability user (or maybe he already happened to be in some sort of training where he received recognition for his skills, ie. the military academy or part of a renowned dojo) and eventually that led him to become a sadist because coping mechanism or discovering that he’s a sadist because of some extreme circumstances (ie. having to interrogate a prisoner for the first time and realizing how much he enjoyed giving and hearing the psychological torture).
Example of Jouno's excuses and justification
Tumblr media
“I was just asking suspects for cooperation!”
“Then do it after they sign the consent form for judicial transaction. Otherwise, it’s not justice.” (p 12)
On one hand, we have Jouno who is very quick to make excuses for his actions by using his position as an officer to justify his behavior. Despite knowingly and intentionally using extreme measures, beyond what's necessary for the situation, he's using the law and his job to try to justify it. (If you're seeing some real-world parallels here, good job!)
On the other hand, we have Tecchou who very clearly values actual justice that is fair to all parties (as we’ve seen previously with him promising the cafe owner that the ADA will get a fair trial at the very least in ch 72). In fact, I think it’d be safe to say that Tecchou is the one that values impartial justice and fairness the most out of the HD, but that's not the focus here.
Parallelisms and which other organizations would suit him and his goals
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(p 15-16)
For starters, Jouno appears to be on the side that believes that the ADA is a part of/affiliated with the DOA (if I’m not reading this wrong)
Also, I’d like to highlight him saying:
“ ‘Our tastes match’, if I should say. The abusive nature. To be honest, I’m almost empathetic. If we happen to lose this battle, I wouldn’t mind reemploying to their side. Not to say that we wouldn’t possibly lose.”
Jouno has no doubt in the strength of the HD but also just wants to be on the abusively cruel side dishing out the suffering. If he’s able to use his position to excuse his actions (ie. what he said about Aya just a few pages ago), then that’s even better for him. The ADA has an ability permit and currently ⅓ of the police force is siding with them and believes in their innocence. Joining the ADA next, should the HD lose, would be the most advantageous for him, if the allegations of them being abusively cruel terrorists were true.
In my opinion, his actual next best organization to join, based on his interests and goals so far as well as his own methods, would be the PM. They have an ability permit too and he’d have just as many chances to be either on the front lines and/or work with the interrogation team. With what his goals has revealed about his moral code, he’s just more cut out for the nature and surface level goals of the PM than the ADA. In fact, Dazai has already admitted to the two of them being alike (which we as the readers can deduce is for their methods in manipulation and interrogation) and Dazai has previously mentioned that he’d sometimes have to come in and help Kouyou’s interrogation team with the job (ch 19). Jouno joining the PM could be a very easy transition, should he stop caring about doing things “under the name of the law” (p 10). However, there is a loophole with the PM being a part of the tripartite tactic, of which the whole goal is to protect Yokohama. Both we as the readers and the members of the ADA know that despite their methods, the PM does in fact care about upholding the overall peace and safety of Yokohama. The reason why he jokes about joining the ADA and makes no mention of the PM (at least in my opinion), is because before all of this, to the public eye, the ADA was one of the “good guys” that were upholding the law whereas the PM is quite literally the mafia. (I touch on this part too in my ch 89.5 cover art analysis.)
Back to answering Fukuchi's question now
I feel like Jouno is ever so slightly more likely to form some kind of alliance with Fukuchi as Kamui but not straight up joining the DOA/allying with the DOA as a whole because again, Jouno is very much sadistic but he also specifically tells Aya (a possible hostage and a confirmed supporter of the ADA) that he specifically wants to “to hurt people under the name of the law” (p 10). Fully siding with the DOA and Kamui would mean that he’d no longer be working under the protection of the law, by any extent, unless Fukuchi were to create some kind of excuse as the commander of the HD (ie. Jouno was under the control of the vampirism). He might work with Fukuchi but I don’t think he’d work with or for Kamui. Either way, I think that overall it’s a very close tie.
In short:
If he says yes then he’d risk not having the law to protect him any longer, which is a part of what he clearly wants to have. The only way around this is some sort of agreement where Fukuchi will create a believable excuse for Jouno helping or he does it in a very indirect way that won't be noticed by others or can easily be played off as some sort of coincidence.
If he says no, he’d likely have to go up against Fukuchi and Bram and risk getting turned as well. I doubt he’d be killed since that would raise too many questions with Tecchou and Teruko, and thanks to Tachihara’s fight, I’d say it’s all been explicitly stated that still being alive is a part of the requirements to be turned into a vampire. When Tachihara tried to off himself as a last resort, specifically to stop Fukuchi and Bram from turning him into a vampire, Fukuchi personally prevented that from happening (ch 90).
Jouno has established that he just wants to hear the sound of people suffering (which Fukuchi would probably have learned of or figured out by now, considering that he’s the commanding officer here), which can be achieved from quite literally any side. However, his condition to this is doing it "under the name of the law", so being on a side that has the law’s protection and works on the front lines is where he’d be closest to achieving this with minimal risk (so realistically the HD or ADA). I doubt Jouno would have any interest in joining the Special Division because I doubt he’d get to do much interrogating or front-line work there, in addition to him having less of an excuse for his cruel methods, and I've already gone over why he'd rather join the ADA than the PM.
