Welcome to... there-are-enough-ruined-relationships-in-this-fandom,-so-I-will-move-heaven-and-earth-and-everything-in-between,-including-probability,-to-give-you-some-lovely-bit-of-head-canon-to-cling-on-to.

I CAN and I WILL NOT accept that Elspeth has to live life without Morag, so I have come up with a canon-compliant theory.

So: How can Morag be alive, you say? She clearly died, you say? On-screen? And then was sold below market value to be chopped into little bits?

Yeah, I know you're not saying that. Because it hurts. And I'm being harsh, I know. I just wanted to highlight how very, very dead she is canonically. There is no easy way out of this.

Is there? There is currently one beautiful, ineffable theory out there, that would explain it all away in an instant, and make it so Morag didn't actually die at all. That theory is the (did we settle on a name yet?) prestige theory. That the Metatron edited the book of life, altered Aziraphale's memory, and that Morag dieing did not originally happen at all and was changed to make Crowley seem worse than he is.

And while that is a lovely theory, and it being true would absolutely blow my mind and elevate my respect for Mr. Neil Gaiman to unfathomable heights, not even that theory saves Morag's life. Not truly, because, as we remember, the book is said to change reality, and in that changed reality Morag would still be dead. Only now it would be the Metatron's fault.

Because that is what hurts us most, isn't it? That Morag WOULD NOT have died if Crowley and Aziraphale had just stayed home that day. Morag being shot was a direct result of them involving themselves.

But we can still unfuck-it-up, not to worry.

My theory has something to do with subconscious desire. Let me explain. Crowley and Aziraphale both have the ability to perform miracles. The way it seems to work is that they will changes to the universe into existence. However, I do not believe that they are in full control of what they will into existence. Their emotional state has a high impact on what happens.

In episode one, Crowley's will to do... something makes his power generate uncontrolled, until it attacks the closest thing he doesn't consciously try NOT to attack, locking Maggie and Nina in by complete accident. When Crowley and Aziraphale try performing their "surreptitious half-a-miracle", it goes completely off the charts. My theory is that that happens because, while they are consciously trying to keep it small, their subconscious is freaking out and REALLY wants to make sure they can continue to be safe. The same goes for when Aziraphale tries to send Maggie and Nina away, and it doesn't work. Because while Aziraphale knows he SHOULD send them away, he doesn't want that. He doesn't want to be alone.

The scene in the graveyard already shows that Crowley is emotionally invested enough to completely overdo it on the hole he makes those two guards fall into. He is clearly heartbroken about Morag's death, but he knows he is not allowed to meddle, and so he doesn't. He also stops Aziraphale, afraid to get him into trouble.

But when Elspeth wants to kill herself, he completely loses control. The Laudanum in his system doesn't help, and the power he had at least somewhat control over, now makes him shrink and grow uncontrollably. His mind is clearly occupied with saving people from dieing and giving Elspeth a happy life.

And this is our in. Because we have now established a theory where we can reasonably say that they do not have full control over their powers, that their emotions play a big part in what they can and can't do, and where we can be pretty damn certain that everything in Crowley's conscious and subconscious does NOT want Morag dead while we can also clearly see that he has little conscious control over what he's doing with his magic. We even know, that for some reason, hell deemed what he did that day alarming enough to immediately have the earth swallow him.

Was the reason for that that he forced an angel to give a known grave robber a lot of money instead of having her kill herself? Or was it maybe because he subconsciously performed a miracle he very much meant to perform, but just didn't consciously think to perform? Did Crowley maybe accidentally scare the living shit out of a perplexed Mr. Dowrymple, with a very confused Morag waking up on an operating table? The only thing we don't have here is visual confirmation. But doesn't that sound possible? Plausible even?

so one of the things that's so horrifying about birth control is that you have to, like, navigate this incredibly personal choice about your body and yet also face the epitome of misogyny. like, someone in the comments will say it wasn't that bad for me, and you'll be utterly silenced. like, everyone treats birth control like something that's super dirty. like, you have no fucking information or control over this thing because certain powerful people find it icky.

first it was the oral contraceptives. you went on those young, mostly for reasons unrelated to birth control - even your dermatologist suggested them to control your acne. the list of side effects was longer than your arm, and you just stared at it, horrified.

it made you so mentally ill, but you just heard that this was adulthood. that, yes, there are of course side effects, what did you expect. one day you looked up yasmin makes me depressed because surely this was far too intense, and you discovered that over 12,000 lawsuits had been successfully filed against the brand. it remains commonly prescribed on the open market. you switched brands a few times before oral contraceptives stopped being in any way effective. your doctor just, like, shrugged and said you could try a different brand again.

and the thing is that you're a feminist. you know from your own experience that birth control can be lifesaving, and that even when used for birth control - it is necessary healthcare. you have seen it save so many people from such bad situations, yourself included. it is critical that any person has access to birth control, and you would never suggest that we just get rid of all of it.

you were a little skeeved out by the implant (heard too many bad stories about it) and figured - okay, iud. it was some of the worst pain you've ever fucking experienced, and you did it with a small number of tylenol in your system (3), like you were getting your bikini line waxed instead of something practically sewn into your body.

and what's wild is that because sometimes it isn't a painful insertion process, it is vanishingly rare to find a doctor that will actually numb the area. while your doctor was talking to you about which brand to choose, you were thinking about the other ways you've been injured in your life. you thought about how you had a suspicious mole frozen off - something so small and easy - and how they'd numbed a huge area. you thought about when you broke your wrist and didn't actually notice, because you'd thought it was a sprain.

your understanding of pain is that how the human body responds to injury doesn't always relate to the actual pain tolerance of the person - it's more about how lucky that person is physically. maybe they broke it in a perfect way. maybe they happened to get hurt in a place without a lot of nerve endings. some people can handle a broken femur but crumble under a sore tooth. there's no true way to predict how "much" something actually hurts.

in no other situation would it be appropriate for doctors to ignore pain. just because someone can break their wrist and not feel it doesn't mean no one should receive pain meds for a broken wrist. it just means that particular person was lucky about it. it should not define treatment.

in the comments of videos about IUDs, literally thousands of people report agony. blinding, nauseating, soul-crushing agony. they say things like i had 2 kids and this was the worst thing i ever experienced or i literally have a tattoo on my ribs and it felt like a tickle. this thing almost killed me or would rather run into traffic than ever feel that again.

so it's either true that every single person who reports severe pain is exaggerating. or it's true that it's far more likely you will experience pain, rather than "just a pinch." and yet - there's nothing fucking been done about it. it kind of feels like a shrug is layered on top of everything - since technically it's elective, isn't it kind of your fault for agreeing to select it? stop being fearmongering. stop being defensive.

you fucking needed yours. you are almost weirdly protective of it. yours was so important for your physical and mental health. it helped you off hormonal birth control and even started helping some of your symptoms. it still fucking hurt for no fucking reason.

once while recovering from surgery, they offered you like 15 days of vicodin. you only took 2 of them. you've been offered oxy for tonsillitis. you turned down opioids while recovering from your wisdom tooth extraction. everything else has the option. you fucking drove yourself home after it, shocked and quietly weeping, feeling like something very bad had just happened. the nurse that held your hand during the experience looked down at you, tears in her eyes, and said - i know. this is cruelty in action.

and it's fucked up because the conversation is never just "hey, so the way we are doing this is fucking barbaric and doctors should be required to offer serious pain meds" - it's usually something around the lines of "well, it didn't kill you, did it?"

you just found out that removing that little bitch will hurt just as bad. a little pinch like how oral contraceptives have "some" serious symptoms. like your life and pain are expendable or not really important. like maybe we are all hysterical about it?

hysteria comes from the latin word for uterus, which is great!

you stand here at a crossroads. like - this thing is so important. did they really have to make it so fucking dangerous. and why is it that if you make a complaint, you're told - i didn't even want you to have this in the first place. we're told be careful what you wish for. we're told that it's our fault for wanting something so illict; we could simply choose not to need medication. that maybe if we don't like the scraps, we should get ready to starve.

we have been saying for so long - "i'm not asking you to remove the option, i'm asking you to reconsider the risk." this entire time we hear: well, this is what you wanted, isn't it?

So, a changeling is sort of like a p-zombie?

(For the unaware, “p-zombie” stands for “philosophical zombie”. It’s a thought experiment in philosophy that describes a being that’s outwardly identical to a human, but does not have a consciousness; that is, a p-zombie does not think whatsoever, although it looks like it thinks to an outsider observer. There’s a whole wikipedia article on it that explains the concept better than I can!)

They don't exactly think, as in "I dont want this" "I like that". But, Changelings do have a form of "Consciousness". It's just that their consciousness is more like a series of commands or tasks than actual formulated thoughts.

Timmy's Changeling has a very advanced "consciousness". It can predict future actions and reroute its tasks to pick only the best options for its situation.

We fill their heads with static to ensure that the Changeling does not form thoughts about anything. Thoughts leads to opinions, and opinions leads to incorrect actions. A proper Changeling should have more static in their mind than a TV screen on a defunct channel!

I'm researching the era when Alastor was alive right now to get a better idea of both his character, the life he lived before Hell, and to hash out a backstory for him.

And so, apparently, Alastor lived through the Prohibition (which was basically the United States government illegalizing the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol because they thought it was the cause of a lot of domestic violence and child abandonment).

Alastor canonically died in 1933.

Do you know how long the Prohibition lasted?

From 1920-1933.

ALASTOR LITERALLY DIED THE SAME YEAR ALCOHOL BECAME LEGAL AGAIN. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BITTER HE MUST'VE BEEN?

The Prohibition officially ended on December 5, 1933, and now my headcanon is that Alastor died December 6, 1933. Literally the day after he could legally drink all the booze he wanted.

I am learning a LOT about New Orleans and the era Alastor lived through (including the gay community in the city at the time) which has been a lot of fun, and I just wanted to share that tidbit because it is so fucking funny to me.
