Happy 10th Anniversary Arrow!

Wow! It has been 10 years since Arrow premiered on October 10, 2012. I can still remember watching the pilot and being amazed by Stephen Amell’s performance, the writing and the action. I did not know then how big of a role this show would play in my life, but as I reflect on the last 10 years I can only be grateful for everything Arrow gave me. 

I especially want to thank all my readers and supporters of Something To Live For. You encouraged, laughed, raged and rejoiced with me over all the big & small moments in Olicity’s journey. Why y’all read 20+ page dissertations on a television show every week will always baffle me, but thank you for enjoying my crazy.

There are countless memories to choose from, but I am most grateful for the friendships I have made. Little did I know that my friendship soulmates were out there among the internets and Arrow was my path to find them. 

I am proud to be part of a committed & compassionate group of fans. The Olicity fandom turned what we loved into powerful change with many charity campaigns. (Don’t forget to donate if you can to FCancer for Arrow10!) We are blessed with unbelievably creative & talented fan fiction writers, gif makers, vidders & artists. Thank you all for the hours & hours of entertainment. You keep this fandom going!

I cannot wait to celebrate this week with you! I didn’t have enough time to blog tonight, but I will be posting all the goodies @arrow10 has so wonderfully provided. We are well fed my fandom family. ENJOY.

1. How much of Inside do you think was true to bo and how much was acting? (Cos I'm doing a speech thing for English gcse which can be on anything so I'm doing this hehehe and I said it was the last tiny bit where he's watching himself outside and smiling because he was doomed to make the art and doomed to enjoy the performance (I've watched too many analysis videos lol) but I wanna see other opinions)

2. How the hell is one supposed to be in a Bo burnham fandom if by doing so we're the ones he's making fun of?

i'm hardly an authority, but i'll answer these to the best of my ability

1. i think it's a performance, borrowing from some real experience, as most creative endeavors do (writing, acting, etc). bo is meticulous and granular in all that he does, and we didn't see anything that he didn't want us to. if some scenes seem too genuine to be an act, well, that's just incredible writing, acting, and producing on his part. he's simply genius, intellectually and emotionally.

2. anyone can do anything. i personally welcome him mocking me.

3. i can't speak for the whole community, but everyone i've met here on tumblr.gov is lovely. we have many talented writers, fan artists, and gif makers, and they're Great Humans to boot. the vibe is frankly unhinged; we're just obsessed with one (1) man. to summarize: friendly and feral.

4. i don't think his medical care is or needs to be public knowledge so i personally don't care to know. i appreciate how open he has been with his mental health struggles as that kind of representation/awareness is important. that said, he's said in many interviews that he's not (but who knows, it's really his prerogative what he is honest about and what he isn't).

7 DAY GIF LOVE CHALLENGE (May 10th-16th)

hi everyone! in celebration of my two year gif-iversary, i want to challenge everyone to spread some love and positivity to their favorite gif makers on this site! tumblr wouldn’t be what it is without gifs, and the incredible people who make them often go unrecognized for their creativity, skill, time, and effort. so here’s a week where we can all come together to show our appreciation for the amazing editors out there! please REBLOG this post to spread the word, so we can fill this site with love and support!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

anyone can join in, regardless of whether they are a creator or not. just follow these steps:

STEP 1: think of some gif makers on this site that you appreciate. pick people who inspire you, whose edits make you smile, whose content makes this site better. anyone you think deserves some love!

STEP 2: each day of the week, send at least one ask to at least one gif maker telling them why you love their creations. it could be as simple as “i love your vibrant coloring style!” or as complex as a college essay breaking down every single awesome thing about their gifs. any message is good, as long as it comes from your heart! (and if you’re really stumped on how to start, there are some message templates below)

STEP 3: after you’ve sent someone an ask telling them why you appreciate their gifs, reblog at least three of their gifsets and give them a few compliments in the tags! again, you can write an essay here or just keysmash enthusiastically, it’s all up to you!

and that’s all you have to do to participate! content creators love getting nice messages about their work, and reblogs with nice tags encourage us to keep creating. in as little as 5 minutes, you can make someone’s whole day by letting them know that they are appreciated!

the goal is to message and reblog from a different person each day for 7 days straight. let’s spread some love!

don’t worry, friend! i’ve written some easy-to-use message templates that you can copy/paste to fill in if you need help coming up with an ask! i’ve also included a little breakdown of different gif components you can compliment in your reblogs:

MESSAGE TEMPLATES

here are a few messages you can personalize and paste into peoples inboxes. just replace all the parts in brackets [ ] with specific things you want to say to the person.

1. “hi [name]! i just want you to know that your gifsets make me smile. i love the way you [color, sharpen, whatever they do that’s cool or creative]. thank you for making such amazing gifs and sharing them with all of us.”

2. “hey [name]! i really love your [specific set or series] gifset[s]! my favorite thing about [it/them] is how you [cool thing they did]. the [specific show, movie, celeb, etc.] fandom is so lucky to have you and your creations!”

3. “hi friend! i hope your day is going well! i just wanted to remind you that you are super talented! your gifs are so [adjective], and they [make me smile, inspire me to be creative, make me love (show, movie, etc.) even more, whatever effect that this person’s gifs have on you]! thank you for blessing everyone’s dash with your creations!”

ultimately, the point of sending these asks is to let people know that they’re appreciated. so if you’re a little nervous about it, you can always send them anonymously!

SUGGESTIONS FOR TAGS

need help figuring out what to write in the tags when you reblog someone’s work? here are some elements of gif making that people spend lots of time and effort on and would love if you noticed and commented on them:

coloring: how are the gifs colored? are they vibrant? pale? black and white? are there any gradients? does any specific color pop out at you? point out something you like about the colors in the gifset.

layout: how many gifs are there in the set? 3? 5? 9? are they stacked, placed next to each other, or a mixture of both? did they use big gifs or small gifs? point out something you like about the layout of the gifset.

composition: how are the gifs arranged? is there symmetry with the shapes or colors used? what visuals did they choose to represent the piece of media? which gif draws your eye the most and why? point out something you like about the composition of the gifset.

typography: how did the creator use text? is it small and soft? big and dramatic? did they use long quotes, or short phrases? is the text warped, tilted, straight? how did they make it stand out or blend in with the gif? point out something you like about the typography in the gifset.

sharpening/blur: are the gifs sharp? blurry? is there a crisp visual quality to them? are some parts softer than others, and does that direct your focus to certain areas? point out something you like about the sharpness or blur used in the gifset.

Chenford continues to be one of my favourite pairings to write, and I am amazed when I look back and see that I’ve posted 43 fics since March of this year! I wouldn’t have done that if it wasn’t for the positive feedback, and community I have found here.

@tuafives honestly the fact that she believes in Hufflepuff Five already makes them a fantastic blog, but her gifs in general are just fantastic! The coloring is always so pretty and I’m obsessed with them. || Favorite set ||

Now that I have a vague understanding of what that’s like, I know that it’s nothing short of strenuous. Words are so powerful, and although I’m a really sensitive sap, I’ve read so many things that hit me to the core, and now I’m sure to tell the authors how much I enjoy their fics. If they went through hours (perhaps days/weeks/months) of drafting, writing, editing, and formatting, a quick comment from the reader really doesn’t hurt !! It’s the most rewarding thing a writer could ever ask for. As an amateur author myself, being on the receiving end is the thing that keeps me going !! I promise you, I don’t take any of it for granted. Your words seriously resonate with me, and it’s a huge motivator for me !! i found arianna’s blog at some point when my fixation on the umbrella academy was at its peak. i was admiring her gifs before i even learned how to gif. it was so amazing to see someone creating so heavily for a show i loved so much, and when i first started out i would compare my tua colorings to hers to try and improve. to this day i am floored every time i see one of her magnificent tua edits in my tag.

arianna is an influential editor to me because she is literally one of a kind. i tried to mimic her style this week for the gmpmeme, and in trying to get in her head i was reminded just how unique and special her creations are. her gifs are incredibly detailed, intricate, and well thought out. each of her sets is a full Experience. her meticulous dedication to her many fandoms is a gift for all of us on here who get to experience her creations for free. her passion shines through in every single work. she forges her own path, putting her visions and ideas into action. and on top of being an incredible gif maker, she is also a very sweet and kind person to talk to, and it’s clear that she is well-loved on this site. i’ve seen her mentioned frequently in other people’s appreciation posts, insp links, shoutouts, etc. because we can all agree that she is absolutely incredible. it is undeniable that her skills, passion, and personality are cause for celebration, admiration, and appreciation.

i first found vega’s blog through her participation in the gif maker positivity meme a year ago. when i saw her gifs, i immediately knew that she was someone who wasn’t afraid to stretch outside of her comfort zone. and it’s exactly for that reason that she has grown into such an incredible gif maker. she has improved exponentially just in the past year ive known her, and that is due to hard work, dedication, and trial and error. she embraces experimentation and switches up her style constantly to expand her range of skills.

vega is an influential editor to me because in the time that we have been mutuals, her content has inspired me to try so many new things. between all the fandoms she jumps into (i love her it and jatp content especially) to all the different techniques she tries out, her influence pushes me to diversify, to experiment, and to try. the nature of art is not stagnancy and comfort, but growth and evolution. vega’s work oozes passion; you can tell she deeply loves the content she creates and the fandoms she is a part of. additionally, she is a kind and warm presence on this site, and a good friend to have in your corner. if you don’t know vega, please go check out her amazing content.
