Reading SVSSS: Chapter 12

For those who don't know, I am reading SVSSS for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

If you have not read it, there will be spoilers! Consider this a warning.

Heading into chapter 12!

It's been an absolute day at work, but I got to do a lovely walk with a friend afterwards AND Charlie decided to grace us with his presence (very briefly for head pats).

Tea today is peppermint! Dinner break midway through this little chapter was congee and I was very pleased with it- photo further down lol.

Let's get into it!

OMG I knew that the Dew Lake snake man would be back! I did not think they'd be here as a "handsome young man" though. I fear that Shen Qingqiu is absolutely fucked LOL. p265

wait. Could Zhuzhi-lang be an ally? or will this guy brutally die later? (do not actually tell me this, I'm just planting my speculations). my thoughts are he could be an ally because SQQ DID save him and give him an unexpected boon by mushroom bod. but also, if Luo Binghe see's SQQ being close to another demon that man will surely murder the other demon. p268

All I'm seeing from SQQ is kink shaming. This guy has got to stop yucking other's yums. First with the necrophilia now he's anti demons fucking snakes. it's the panicked "way too fucking hardcore" for me p271

Cultivation wise I do really love that SQQ can just pick up any fan and start cultivating. that is honestly the coolest part of his cultivation. I love it so much. p279

I stated I would have congee pic earlier and here is me delivering on that. It's pork congee with eggs, tofu, pork, green onions and an ungodly amount of chili crisp.

I'm slowly turning this chapter-by-chapter read into a stay at home mom's recipe blog. I am not sorry.

Okay so thankfully nothing terribly tragic happened this chapter. It does feel like a big set up though so I am a little nervous about that.

AND. He still has all of this demon blood in him so he really is fucked. He may have escaped for the moment but I see all of the demons coming back for him.

Historical accuracy in fanworks - why?

A recurring thing w me is that people get annoyed with how obsessed I am with historical accuracy 😭😅 Like people have had to physically restrain me from doing 5 hours of research for a throwaway line in a fanfic, and one friend and I once had an hour long argument about word choice... But unfortunately I am just Like This lmao.

The thing is though, it's not because of any inherent sense of superiority or anything like that lol, I just have preferences. Also, I'm not the kind of person that needs everything to be 100% accurate all the time, I can still have fun JAPFLDPGPF. Basically, for me it comes down to a few things:

1. Suspension of disbelief / immersion

With historical fiction, the "he would not fucking say that" kicks in w dialogue easier than w something set in the modern day. Sometimes it's because of glaringly modern language (a 19th century guy going "sup" or something xD) but other times it's because a character is way too familiar with people of a different class, or acts/dresses/speaks too casually in general.

My hugest pet peeve with this are character names for side characters that the author made up 😭😭😭😭😭 As a non-native English speaker I don't really get the urge to insert random English names into my stories even when the stories are in English, I always look up the historical context and try to use names that a parent would give their child in that context. I'm sorry for naming and shaming but in one tdv fic Alfred's surname was Smith and I had to put down my phone because it broke my immersion so badly xD

2. Enjoyment

Historical accuracy can also be a characterisation thing!!! With crown prince rudolf of austria specifically his whole appeal as a character comes from his neuroses, and his neuroses are the specific way they are because of his specific position and status, and all that those entail in his historical context. It makes a story so much more interesting if these are properly taken into account 👀

3. What's the purpose of fanfic?

To me personally the purpose of writing and posting FANfic, as opposed to writing other stories, is threefold:

Making a point about the original story (is it a fix-it fic? An AU reimagining? A canon-compliant elaboration on something I think could expand upon a character's personality or two characters' relationship? These approaches all comment on the original work and its themes and characters.)

Personal enjoyment/self indulgence (I write what I would like to read)

Hopefully connecting with other fans (persuading them to see my Vision re specific characters/relationships, the setting, or the work as a whole; keeping the fandom alive; inspiring other people to make fanwork; providing entertainment; finding people who are the same kind of insane as you and making friends)

To me, putting historical accuracy into my fic or drawing inspiration from history fulfills all of these goals. With the first one: the original work usually comments on its era in some way as well, so drawing inspiration for the fic from that era complements it and keeps them grounded together. IRL history can also give you fun ideas to put in. W the second one: I love late 19th century history specifically and historical accuracy is my kink KSLFPEPDOFO. W the third one: I like sharing weird/funny/interesting historical facts w people so we can enjoy them together 😌 I also like Informing people of things that happened in history so hopefully they can have as much fun w the knowledge as I do. I try not to do this unsolicitedly and in general try to avoid criticising anyone for historical inaccuracies without being asked to because that's boring, I'm not trying to be cinema sins here

4. Exceptions

Sometimes historical inaccuracy is more fun than historical accuracy, though this is highly personal - you just have to do what you think is best and accept that something you enjoy might be something that breaks another person's suspension of disbelief (and hence makes them not enjoy the story). My personal metrics are roughly:

Sojblfpldlpf fun fact an unnamed person and I had a conversation about rudolf's probably not existing [redacted] register last night and while writing a fic about it would be historically inaccurate, the conclusions we arrived at about it were pretty funmy and interesting. With gay and homosexual implications

One of my favourite pastimes is to comb over crown prince rudolf's life and purposefully misinterpret random things as gay KSOGODPFOTK 😌😌😌 it's a good way to get fic ideas. So um yeah idk where I was going with this post haha

Hi, uh, this may seem like a super weird question (and please feel free to ignore it), but do you have any advice on how to get into kink? Like, I'm pretty sure it's something I would enjoy but I find it super difficult to find an "in", if that makes any sense? Are there, like, parties that you just show up to, or do you connect with people online, or how else do you find a community? I'm a bit okay, a lot socially anxious and the idea of just marching up to strangers does NOT fill me with joy lmao... Again, so sorry if this is a weird thing to ask, I just don't know anyone irl to talk to about this and you seem quite knowledgeable XD

Hey! This isn’t weird at all! Breaking into the kink scene is super anxiety-inducing, especially if you already have a tendency toward anxiety (myself included). But there are lots of ways to do so.

I personally got involved with my local community through a local rope studio (since that is a primary kink of mine). They host weekly events and I just started attending them. It was scary, I didn’t know anyone, but over time some people took me under their wing, and I started to really enjoy my time there. But it took time and a fair bit of discomfort to get to that point.

I know a lot of people who got into the local scene through munches (gatherings for kinky people that are purely social and not at all about actually doing kinky things). I personally haven’t been to these kinds of events, but I hear good things. Best way to find them is on event listings on Fetlife.com (but beware: fetlife is a fucking cesspool, and I hate it for all things except finding events and staying in touch with my non-local kink people).

Instagram and discord have also been great resources for finding local parties/events. Most kink spaces/organizers will have an account with one or both of these platforms. Sometimes looking into events/spaces/organizers on the internet first is nice, so you can see if it fits your vibe. I’m really lucky to live in an area with tons of queer kink organizers and events, so I use these platforms frequently to find events and meet new people.

I think, overall though, breaking into the kink scene involves a fair bit of discomfort and anxiety. Not just because you’re going into new spaces but because you’re putting yourself out there in a really vulnerable way, just by the nature of exploring kink itself. My best advice to you is, no matter how you choose to find spaces/events/people, stick with it through the discomfort. It will take time (like MONTHS) of awkwardly showing up to things where you don’t know anyone. But it will be very rewarding when you find the people and the spaces that feel right for you.

Thank you for your message two days ago, and sharing your wisdom. I really appreciate it! I actually came around telling my mom about this as well. Thankfully we also have a really good relationship, wasn’t always perfect but she always went out of her way to support me and wants the best for me.

When I told her, she seemed a little shocked at first but instead of shutting me down she asked more open ended questions, as in why I liked this stuff and what draws me to it, she thought that maybe is was is the culture of consent, as well as the role playing aspect Kink has, which is very much true. She gave me the space to let me be heard, and she did suggest to maybe figure out what I am looking for in a sexual manner in more LGBTQIA spaces first, and build from that. because I’m a queer person working through some shame, sexual trauma, I also have serious trust issues and Social Anxiety so she wants me to work through those first. 😅 She sent me some links and articles as well as offered to connect me with a good friend of ours who has worked in many communities and she can help navigate me to what would work best for me and where to stay away from.

Damn I didn't know about this! The tarot community can be quite tricky here. I definitely want to stay away from the part of the community that doesn't really have any respect for idols, I see it all the time and it just puts a bad taste in my mouth.
