my dad’s wife was lightly poking fun at him for pronouncing spend as if it rhymes with pinned and idk if my brother’s spent too much time in the Midwest or what, but he started getting in on it and insisting that they’re pronounced differently and like.
My Literal Brother you were raised in pin-pen merger country. what the FUCK are you talking about
#idk where his wife is originally from but her accent's close enough to ours that I was surprised by her teasing#we can all agree that him saying poem as /poim/ is weird though.#he's always claimed he picked it up from when he lived in Rochester from the ages of 1-2#but I thought it was weird that that apparently didn't affect any other part of his accent#so he was googling it trying to show that he's not the only one who pronounces it like that#and he conceded that he mighta just gotten it from listening to Pink Floyd's Nobody Home a lot sdfjhskghfkjgh;d#I can kinda hear it but it's still clearly two syllables with the /i/ being pretty faint#and my dad says it as one syllable with a diphthong#but yeah I only pronounce pin and pen differently if I'm doing an exaggerated/mocking ~fancy~ voice#language stuff
