As I look back on the jobs I’ve had and the volunteer work I’ve had, and my life in general, 3 things are consistent:

I have worked with kids/ I am currently good with working with kids. (Daycare/pro-babysitter/nursery/Sunday school teacher)

I’m good at working with or talking to older people/the elderly. (Assisted Living Facility/ volunteer work with retirees)

I’ve only done service jobs/volunteer work. (Retail/food service/dish washer/housekeeping/fostering cats/gardening/babysitter/nursery/daycare).

I’ve never been drawn to working with others my age I guess. I’ve never worked in an office or at a desk. I’ve never attended a conference meeting.

And none of these jobs paid much if at all. And they were/are a lot of work that added value to society. Some were rewarding and most thankless.

I’m disappointed that we don’t reward people who do service work in the same way we reward dudes in polo shirts answering emails.

Office workers deserve recognition too but it’s so unbalanced with how much they get paid and contribute to society as a whole.

General big picture updates

Once again, it’s all a little dispiriting so I haven’t wanted to talk about it, but that’s not really helpful. Also, I’m not really clear on what line of privacy vs openness is best to maintain.

-- In the week before winter break, Daffodil had a placement meeting, and then an IEP meeting. Players at both meetings felt that a residential educational placement would be best for her. DCF and schools both hedged on the cost aspect.

-- 2 school systems (the one where her closing program is located, where she currently attends school, and the one where the DCF office is located) along with various social workers, are still in slow-motion email discussions about placement; sometimes I’m copied on emails and mostly I’m not. Rose and I are still her educational surrogates. We have yet to see an IEP draft. I sent out an email two days ago that we would not sign an IEP that did not stipulate residential placement. It felt like an incompetent arrow sent out into the darkness, because it’s very unclear what the rules are and who is supposed to do what.

-- Daffodil had her neuropsych evaluation this week. I’m fairly sure that she’s been counting on this somehow “proving” that she doesn’t have to go to residential. The preliminary diagnosis is “social communication disorder,” which sounds very vague. I guess it’s often associated with ASD, which the evaluator did not feel she had. It also seems like exactly what you see on childhood development charts as the consequences of low caregiver interaction in the first years of life. She did not make any mental health evaluations, “because of her age,” but seemed to feel that some diagnosis may be made in the coming years. The evaluator recommended a specific residential school.

-- We haven’t actually seen Daffodil since New Year’s Eve, mostly because we were away last weekend.

--Away last weekend = glorious yearly trip with a group of friends to a cabin in a beautiful, snowy place, where we were in not one but two single-car accidents. Only one was in our own car. Have yet to get to a body shop. We were the only people on the trip with children (Clover stayed home with a wonderful babysitter), and that is an interesting dynamic.

-- We got a new cat for Christmas, and she’s fun and funny and patient with Clover’s forced cuddles. She also makes big messes all over the house. We are all in love. Our older cat was too mad at us to speak to us for several days, but she’s come around somewhat. The cats have been chasing each other around in a way that I interpret as fun.

-- Clover is so running at turbo-speed these days-- her teacher asked us to please speak to her about constantly running in the classroom, we’ve made new rules about what furniture is okay for jumping off, and she wants to be told STORIES 100% of the time we have down time. She is so fun and affectionate and wonderful, and quickly forgives all my grouchiness. I feel a mixture of low-grade exhaustion, overwhelming gratitude, guilt and not being a perfect parent for her, and a sort of fear: there is a wholly rational fear of how Clover will feel about us when she develops a more mature view of her removal from her family*, and an irrational, fairy-tale like fear that I have always had for her, that she is is so wonderful that some tragedy will befall her.

* Of course I will not try to keep her from feeling anger and sadness at her removal from her family, and of course I understand that she WILL feel these things, and rightfully so. And I do not expect to escape that anger. But I still, emotionally, fear it.

Two months in to Sakura going to the school it was summer for the local colleges. He looked forward to picking up his daughter from her daycare as the woman who had sold the school to him was often there. He knew the idea of a single father was off putting to most woman but she always had a sweet smile for him even if he was in one of his more teasing moods she blushed under his attention.

“Hello, Miss Kristy.” He said as he walked in the front door to pick up Sakura.

“Mr. Akechi. How nice to see you again.” She said with that smile that he had come to enjoy.

“And how was my little monster today?” he asked as he began to sign her out.

“She was ghoulish as usual.” Kristy said with a smile. “Though I do have to discuss a few things with you.”

“Oh no.” Mitsuhdie said as he figured something was  coming that he didn’t want to deal with after a long day at work.

“Would you follow me?” she asked as she went into the conference room. She shut the door and offered him a seat. “Sakura has been an excellent student and she is smart as a whip.”

“But there is a problem?” he asked.

“She has been asking where babies come from and why she has a dad but not a mother.” Kristy said. “I wanted to talk to you about this before it became an issue and how you wanted to handle it. Like I said before we are all a family here and we are here to help you in anyway we can.”

“I didn’t know she was getting to that age.” He said as he started thinking. “she hasn’t said anything at home.”

“That isn’t abnormal.” Kristy said with a soft smile, “Sometimes a child won’t ask their parent or tell their parents but ask someone else they trust. She doesn’t want to upset you by asking certain questions.”

“I honestly don’t know what to tell her.” He said. He hadn’t thought that when the adoption was final he would ever have to deal with any of this. She was only a year old then. Now she was to bright and she wanted to know more about why they as a family were so different. He should have seen this coming.

“Well we don’t have to say anything right now. I just wanted you to be aware Sakura was starting to notice things in her life were slightly different then some of her classmates.” Kristy said, “And when you finally do decide on how you wanted to handle this all you have to is tell us and we will reinforce what you want us too.”

“How would you handle this?” he asked.

“How would I handle what?” Kristy asked softly.

“I adopted her after she was left on my doorstep literally when she was three months old.” Mitsuhdie said as Kristy looked shocked. “Her biological father was my older brother who died about six months before she was born. Her mother who I never met had hired a lawyer to handle the exchange of custody to me as she termimated her rights to Sakura.”

“Wow.” Kristy said she shook her head as she thought all he must have gone through. “I don’t know. This is nothing I have even heard of before. However I do have to say you have my respect I don’t know if I could have done it. Sakura is a wonderfully beautiful little girl.”

“Thank you.” He said as he smiled softly. “She is my life now.”

“It shows.” Kristy said, “She is forever in my the office telling me what you are doing with her or what you have planned.”

“I hope she isn’t to much.” Mitsuhide said.

“Not at all.” Kristy said. “Give it some thought and let us know how you want to proceed. Until then we will skirt around it with her.”

“Thank you.” He said.

“What is family for?” Kristy said with a smile as they both stood up.

“I do have a question for you, personally.” He asked as he looked at her as she stopped. “I may have to work late a few night in the coming month. Do you know of anyone who could watch her like a babysitter for few hours? I don’t have a normal babysitter and the people she knows like my team mates will be there with me.”

“If you need someone to watch her I can.” Kristy said.

“You?” he asked.

“Of course.” She said with a smile.

“Well I didn’t that would be that easy.” He said as he chuckled.

“Most of the teachers here often will do a few hours of babysitting if needed, just for your information.” Kristy said. “The only thing you will need to do is fill out the updated permissions with who ever you chose.”

“Can I update it now?” he asked as he looked at her.

“Yes.” She said with a smile as they walked out of the conference room back into the front of the school. She pulled Sakura’s file and showed him where to place her information. In the process she took a small sip of paper and wrote down her cell phone number. “You can call me anytime to watch her. Since school is over for the summer I am free most of the time.”

“Thank you Kristy.” He said.

“Your very welcome Mr. Akechi.” She said with a bright smile.

 Mitsuhide walked back to Sakura’s classroom. When the door opened Sakura’s head shot up and smiled as she saw him. “Daddy!”

“Hello princess.” He said as he scooped her up and looked at her and saw she was covered in dried paint. “Did you paint today?”

“How did you know Daddy?” Sakura asked as she looked at him as he smiled and laughed.

“I don’t have a clue sweetheart.” He said as he waited for her to go and get her picture. He stood and smiled at the teachers. They were staring slightly at him though they never said anything to him.

“Daddy I want go get something to eat.” She said as he picked her up and she hugged him.

“We will see Princess.” He said as he started to walk up to the office area. He had her tiny backpack on his back and was headed for the door.

“Good bye Sakura. I hope you have a fun weekend with your dad.” Kristy called out from the office.

“Bye Miss Kristy.” Sakura called back.

He chuckled at the reaction his tiny daughter had to the young woman. He put her in the car seat and buckled her in. “Do you like Miss Kristy?”

“Yes Daddy.” Sakura said.

“Would you like it if Miss Kristy looked after you a few days because I have to work late?” he asked.

“Yes daddy.” She said again. “I like Miss Kristy a lot.”

“Well sweetheart I do too.” He said with a soft smile. “Let’s go get some dinner.”

 Over the weekend he began to wonder how he should handle Sakura’s wondering mind and her questions. He didn’t know that by being her only parent would be so hard now. He thought he would have more trouble when she was a teenager. He didn’t have any women friends that could help him either. He had to think about this some more as he was grateful to the daycare he happened to stumble on. They had been a lifesaver not only with everything they had helped her with. She was excelling in ways he didn’t even realize were important but also they were helping him in ways he didn’t know he needed.

He had made a decision not to date after he adopted Saukra. Though he wasn’t completely ready to give up hope that a perfect woman was out there he had really debated that there would be someone for him. He was content with his life with Sakura. When he looked at Kristy though he had a slight hope there maybe, just maybe. He could have the full life he had denied himself.

 He looked at his daughter as she played with her dolls and smiled. Three years ago he wouldn’t know how to do any of the things he knew how to do now. This was his life and he wouldn’t change anything but he was lonely again. He could start dating again. That idea scared him more than being by himself with a small daughter.

He wanted more than this for his life. He wanted someone to share it with. After everything he had to go through with being a single father for Sakura he also knew that he did want to have more children. He just didn’t want to do it all alone again.

He wondered if he could somehow change their lives in a good way. He was trying to plan ahead and with everything he was thinking only one woman kept creeping into his brain. He realized he was more than attracted to the woman in his head. He was very attracted to her.

He didn’t even know if she was single. He finally let that thought sink in. He really wanted to know that small fact now. Everything else he planned was based on that small detail. He didn’t even know how to find out.

He began to daydream of a slightly more full life with a woman he hardly knew. He smiled as he looked down at the little girl on the floor. If she hadn’t asked a few questions he wouldn’t have had the idea to ask the woman to see if she would watch her. He smiled.

“Sakura do you know if Miss Kristy is dating someone?” he asked.

“She isn’t daddy.” Sakura said without looking. “Miss Ruth always tells her she should stop and smell the roses and go out with someone.”

“And you know this because?” he asked as he looked at her.

“I don’t like it when someone says something to Miss Kristy. She is really nice.” Sakura said as she turned around.

“I like Miss Kristy too.” He said with a soft smile.

“Maybe she could come over for dinner.” Sakura said and he choked on his drink. He looked at the girl and knew he was a step behind her. The realization that his three year old daughter was trying to set him up on a date with the woman he liked who was a worker at her daycare was almost to much for his brain. Almost.

sorry this is so long but i need to Go Off

you know what i’m mad at anyone who thinks being a nanny isn’t a real job because bitch i work ~35hr work weeks (factoring in one babysitting job on a weekend which isn’t every week but definitely twice a month) during which i can’t really take my eyes off two kids (two families i’ve worked for had 3), we use very busy public transport daily, i have to cook for two (i like cooking and know how to do it but i never use pre-made stuff or frozen stuff other than rice or pasta, also for the family i currently work for i make my own shopping list for what i’ll need for their kids, do the grocery shopping, and get reimbursed later) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY because i’m not the actual parent i can’t discipline in the same way!!! @ parents out there: would you want your kids to say “our nanny is mean she yells at us and never plays with us and doesn’t give us a snack after school!” or “our nanny is nice and plays with us and dinner is really good and we love her”. like be honest you’re not always angels with your kids, and that’s relatively normal (i rationalize) because you’ve got another full-time job and taking care of kids is a lot, sometimes you might just be like “SHUT UP AND PLAY BY YOURSELVES”, which i really can’t do without being labelled as mean.

if there’s a teacher strike (there’s one off and on right now because this is france and everyone is striking but most importantly the bulk of the public transport we normally take, so either we’ve got to walk a couple kms or take the one bus that MIGHT be running to a stop that’s still 20 minutes from home) also i’m often the one who’s dumped with the kids when they’re sick. “can you come over? kid 1 is sick!” so that means i’m basically on full alert because that could mean a) going straight over to their house and taking care of kid 1 and having to take kid 1 on busy public transport to pick up kid 2 and take public transport back, b) picking up kid 1 from school early and repeating above, c) taking kid 1 to the doctor whose office may be across town (one time i took a vomiting kid with a fever of 102 to the hospital as per the mom’s request TAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR AN HOUR BC THERE’S NO CAR...let’s just say we brought a bowl with us and it wasn’t pretty)

oh! how could i forget school vacation! IN FRANCE (no idea about other countries) full time workers ( 35 hours a week, no paid overtime allowed) are given 5 weeks of vacation, plus a dozen public holidays. school vacations during the year amount to ~6 weeks! if you don’t have grandparents who’ll take the kids for a couple weeks every two months, or some kind of other childcare you’re using (but why would you, you have a nanny!), guess who’s not either paid vacation OR full vacation! (often parents i’ve worked for will take one week off each school holiday, leaving me to do the other week (with pay, but not extra!! same 80-100 euros!), OR send their kids to their grandparents’ houses for the two weeks and not pay me)

also never having a consistent schedule because the parents might have something to do (long commute that’s time-dependant because of traffic, a meeting, the mom i work for now has a boxing class on tuesdays). my friends tend to have normal 9-6 jobs, so they’re often asking if i want to do something after work and i’m like “yeah i get off anywhere between 8:30-10:30 and after that all i want to do is go home and chill). also the parents i work for are separated and one lives an hour from the school and the other lives at a walkable distance (2km) (both are 5th floor walk-ups)

i get paid 80 euros ($89 USD) a week

regarding above: i LOVE kids, i love my job even though sometimes it’s emotionally a little difficult (whereas my other jobs have been like...physically difficult like being on my feet all day and cooking) and stressful, i love cooking, i like playing games, i’m pretty entertaining, and i enjoy cooking. so in all honesty i picked a GOOD JOB, but i get a lot of side-eye for saying i work as a nanny because people (esp my age) don’t think of it as a Real Job.

try doing this job if you don’t enjoy the bulk of what i said above. i hear so many people saying “i hate kids” point blank, then complain about their job with regular hours you can plan your life around

also @ parents: i’ve worked for great families who were respectful of my time, etc, but even they sometimes took advantage of the fact that i didn’t have a “day job” and would stick me with their sick kids, or asked me to do things that didn’t at all fall under my job descriptions (go pick up the kids’ new textbooks, they need gloves can you buy some under 10 euros on the way back from school i’ll pay you back later, the electricity guy is coming at 3pm can you let him in and lock up after, can you pick up the stuff from the dry cleaner’s, i have to go to work early can i drop the kids with you at 7:30 and you take them to school instead, for one family i had to clean the kids’ rooms and the kitchen, for another i had to walk their dog)

parenting isn’t easy but in my opinion nannying your kids, as wonderful as you think they are, isn’t easy either, ESP when you’re trying to maintain the “nice, helpful, TRUSTWORTHY, good nanny/employee” vibe. also, the highest salary i’ve gotten paid for this job was 100 euros a week, they provided a transport pass (other jobs i’ve shelled out 22 euros a week for transport with no reimbursement) and a paid phone bill (here in france adding me to their plan was 2 euros a month). to be fair, i did get to live with the family (but that isn’t always easy either! and probably not always easy for the parents either, sort of unconsciously like having another kid, an extra person to cook for if they’re cooking that night, making space in their home, etc!). and this time they pay for a little apartment which is amazing of them (it’s 15m carrées / 160 square feet)

i grew up with a single mother who didn’t get paid child support and rarely even had a babysitter, so i really don’t know how other kids with married or divorced parents grew up in the US. i know being a single mother for my mom was extremely hard (she’s very vocal about reminding me of this every time i complain about my job tbh). now i technically work for two single parents. but wow...not all single parents/divorced parents can afford what basically amounts to a second parent. that’s what i feel like and have felt for all of my nannying jobs. a second/third parent. truly. 

so parents...if your kids are telling you their nanny is wonderful, and you think she’s great too, keep in mind that that wonderfulness is the result of a LOT of hard work that you don’t see, and that if you’re relying on her for any or all of the stuff i’ve listed above, hiring a nanny is basically hiring a second/third parent. think about that when hiring someone. 

when you hire a nanny who works ~30 hours a week for you, you are hiring a second/third parent. that’s what this job is. you wouldn’t just trust anyone with your kids. if your co-parent is doing a great job, THINK ABOUT MAYBE PAYING HER A LITTLE MORE AT CHRISTMAS OR SOMETHING.

Dance Lessons

Requested: No, I wrote this for @gottaletgopete’s Valentine’s Day Celebration with secret valentines. Happy Valentines Day @softscottlang (There will be a part 2 just so you know)

Summary: Y/N has a 6 year old son from a previous relationship, which makes it very difficult to date. What happens when she finds out that her little boy wants to take dance lessons?

You sighed as you walked up the sidewalk to your apartment after a long day at work. It was a rough day with your boss yelling at you and some co-workers dumping extra work on you, but you were glad to be home because you knew you were about to see the love of your life, your little boy, Aiden. Sure you got the rude looks from the older ladies sometimes when they asked about the father and you told them you weren’t married and he wasn’t in the picture, but hey… it wasn’t their life, am I right? And why would you want to be with someone that didn’t want to be with you or your beautiful son anyway? You smiled as you made your way up the flight of stairs and unlocked the door. Walking in your apartment, you heard classical music playing and it confused you. You didn’t see the babysitter or Aiden, so you sit your purse on the table and hang your jacket up before you walk towards the music quietly. As you creep up on Aiden’s bedroom the music gets louder and you can see the door standing slightly open. You peek your head round the corner to see your babysitter, Anna, sitting in a chair by the door with her back to you and Aiden out in the middle of the floor dancing, well trying to. You cover your mouth to stifle a giggle so you can watch as long as you can before he sees you. You manage to stay hidden a couple minutes before he sees you on one of his spins.

“Mommy!” he shouts as he runs to the door throwing it open to wrap his arms around your legs.

“Hi Bub! You looked like you were having fun! What were you doing?” you asked him as you crouched down to his level.

“Miss Anna was helping me dance,” he said as a small blush crept on his cheeks.

“You like dancing?” you ask him as he nods furiously. “That’s great, Bub! It’s fun, huh?” He nods his head again with a big smile.

“Miss Anna said there are classes I could take to help me get better!” he told you excitedly.

“Oh really? Is that something you think you’d really want to do?” you ask him. You watch his eyes go wide with excitement and a smile creep across his face.

“Oh yea! More than anything! More than going to Disney World!” he tells you as he laughs making you laugh with him.

“Well, I’ll see what I can do about it, Bub. How about we let Miss Anna go home and we can go get something to eat, yea?” you tell him as he nods before he runs over to hug Anna.

“Thank you, Miss Anna. That was so much fun,” he tells her as he hugs her neck.

“I had fun helping you too, Aiden. We’ll try some more tomorrow, yea?” Anna tells him before she leaves. You lead Aiden into the kitchen and he helps you fix a quick dinner before you sit at the table and eat. You let him play for a couple hours while you clean and do a few things around the apartment before it’s time for bed.

“Okay, Bub, it’s time for bed,” you tell him as you walk into his room to see him already in his pajamas. “Did you brush your teeth?”

“Yes ma’am,” he smiles at you as he climbs into his bed.

“Good boy,” you smile back before you press a kiss to his forehead. “Sleep well, baby. I’ll see you in the morning. I love you.” You walk backwards towards the door as you speak.

“I love you too Mommy,” he tells you before you flip the light switch off and close his door. You walk back into the living room and pull out your laptop to research dance classes in your area. You find tons for kids 8 and above and for adults, not so many for 6 and under. Then as you were scrolling, one caught your eye.

“Child’s Dance Class (ages 5-6) June 1-August 16. Two Instructors, 1 Male/1 Female - Both have Broadway experience. $25 registration fee/$25 per week - $300 total. Dancewear included. Text or email for more information.”

Out of all the classes you had seen for Aiden’s age group, you thought this had to be the best one. You sent a text to the number in the ad and got a reply soon later from a very nice woman named Sarah.

Sarah: Hi, Y/N! We would love for Aiden to join us in our upcoming class! As you know we start in a few days and I do want to let you know that so far we haven’t had any other boys sign up yet, but it’s no big deal! Aiden will love it here, I’m sure! If you want to bring him by tomorrow, you can.

Y/N: That would be lovely! I know he’s going to be excited when I tell him. I didn’t even know he wanted to dance. I just came home from work today and found the babysitter teaching him and he told me she had mentioned classes and he just got so excited when he talked about it.

Sarah: Oh that’s wonderful! He’s going to fit in here so well! I just know it! I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

You couldn’t wait for Aiden to wake up, now you were excited. You texted Anna to let her know about the class and to ask her to bring Aiden there to meet you.

Anna: That’s amazing! I’m so glad you found one you think he’ll like! Absolutely! I would love to bring him to the school! We’ll meet you there!

You smiled to yourself as you thought about the scene you walked in on when you came home and how happy Aiden looked. You busied yourself around the apartment until you got tired and made yourself lie down. The next day you were buzzing. No one told Aiden anything, not even when Anna put him in the car to bring him to meet you. Once she was parked, she helped him out and he saw you standing on the sidewalk.

“Mommy!” he said as he ran over and jumped in your arms. You caught him and held him in a hug. “What are you doing here? I thought you had to work.”

“I do, Bub, but I have someone I want you to meet, so while I was on my lunch, I came to introduce you,” you smile at him before you set him back on the ground. He takes your hand in his and you all walk into the school. He didn’t notice where he was until you walked inside and he saw the pictures on the wall.

“Mommy… where are we,” Aiden asked you with big eyes.

“We are at a dance school, Baby,” you smile down at him. You see his eyes start to water as he smiles.”Don’t cry, honey,” you tell him.

“I’m gonna dance?” he asks you.

“Yea, Bub, You are,” you tell him. “Let’s go meet Mommy’s friend.” You lead him to the office on the right and knock on the door.

“Come in,” a woman’s voice calls out. You open the door and you all walk in.

“Hi, I’m Y/N Y/L/N. We spoke last night. This is Aiden,” you say as you motion to your son as he hides his head behind you making you laugh before you pull him in front of you.

“Well, Hello Aiden! My name is Sarah. Your mommy tells me that you want to dance. Is that right?” Sarah asks him as he nods his head furiously and she laughs. “Well that’s a very good thing because we have a class starting in 2 days for kids just like you! Would you like to come to that?”

“Oh, yes. Please,” he says as he looks from Sarah to you.

“Why don’t you all have a seat and I can go over things with you,” Sarah tells you. Half an hour later, Aiden is signed up for the class and he’s walking out of the school with a huge smile on his face. He didn’t like it when Sarah told him no other boys were signed up yet, but he was okay when she told him the other teacher was a boy. When you were outside and getting ready to leave, he hugged you in a death grip.

“What’s wrong, Baby?” you asked him worriedly.

“Nothing Mommy. You’re just the best Mommy in the world,” he tells you before he kisses your cheek. “And I love you.”

“I love you too, Bub,” you tell him kissing his cheek too. “Now be good for Miss Anna, ok? Mommy will be home soon.” You sigh as you watch them leave before you go back to work.

“Y/N!” you heard Sarah shout from the door as she and a guy with brown curls jogged over. “Aw, shoot! I was hoping I would catch Aiden before he left. That’s okay. He can meet him at class. This is Tom, the other instructor I was telling you about. This is Aiden’s Mom.” Tom reached out his hand and you shook it.

“Nice to meet you. Aiden is so excited for this class. You have no idea,” you tell him with a smile as you meet his chocolate eyes.

“Nice to meet you too. I’m glad to hear it. I was hoping we would get at least one boy,” he smiles back at you. Dear Lord, did he have to be British too? That was just too much.

“I was telling Sarah, I literally just found out about his interest yesterday. I came home from work, heard music, and found the babysitter teaching him. He told me she had mentioned classes and his eyes got so bright and excited, I couldn’t say no,” you explained.

“I can understand that,” he laughs. “It’s hard to say no sometimes, especially to someone you love so much.” You nod your head in agreeance. “I don’t want to keep you. I just wanted to say hello.”

“Thank you both again,” you smile before you walk to your car and go back to work. “Holy crap,” you think to yourself once you get in your car and drive away. “If that was my dance teacher, I would have paid attention in school. Where do I sign up?” you thought again. Two days later it was Saturday morning and you were getting ready to take Aiden to his first class. “You almost ready, Bub?” you call to him as you walk down the hall towards his room. You find him sitting on his bed with his head hanging down. “Hey… what’s wrong?” You ask as you kneel in front of him.

“What if they don’t like me?” he says quietly.

“Honey, there’s no way they won’t like you,” you tell him.

“But Miss Sarah said I was the only boy. They’re gonna tease me,” he tells you.

“Well, if they do, you just ignore them. The best way to deal with a bully is to be nice to them, unless they hit you, then you tell someone, okay?” you tell him as you rub his head.

“Okay,” he says quietly.

“You’re just nervous, sweetheart. I promise, you’re gonna love it. I met your other teacher, the boy one. He’s really nice. You’re gonna like him. He’ll stick with you,” you smile at him.

“Oh yea!” he smiles up at you. “I forgot about him.” You both head out of the apartment as you make your way to get a quick bite to eat on the way to his class. You notice you’re one of the first few to arrive when you walk in.

“Okay, Bub, go put your bag in your locker right there and take a spot on the floor like the others. I’m gonna go let Miss Sarah know we’re here, then I’ll be sitting right there,” you tell him before you kiss his forehead and he runs off. You walk over to where Sarah is standing and start talking to her. Tom is standing near the lockers as he sees Aiden run up and put his bag in one.

“You must be Aiden,” he says as he crouches down next to him. Aiden smiles at him after he sits his bag down.

“I am! Are you my other teacher?” he asks excitedly.

“I am! My name is Tom,” Tom tells him as he holds his hand out for him to shake. Aiden grips his hand and shakes it like you showed him to do when someone holds their hand out. “That’s quite a grip you got there, Bud. You ready for class?”

“Very much!” Aiden says as he bounces on his feet.

“Great! Why don’t you go take a seat on the mat. We’re gonna get started in just a minute,” Tom smiles at him. He could feel his heart swell as he watched Aiden bounce off towards the mat. He could tell there was something special about Aiden and that he was going to love having him in this class. When he was walking by the class to get to where Sarah was, he hear the girls whispering.

“Why is HE here?”

“He’s the only boy”

“Is he supposed to be in THIS class?”

“That’s SO weird?”

“Its creepy”

He glanced over at Aiden and saw his sad eyes looking at the mat, definitely not the boy he just saw leaving the lockers.

“Girls,” he said as he knelt down in front of them. “I know we’re not making fun of someone in this class are we?” He asked them with a raised eyebrow.

“We were just wondering why he’s the only boy in the class?” one girl spoke up.

“Yea, is he supposed to be here?” another chimed in after her.

“Yes, as a matter of fact he is. Yes, he is the only boy, but that does not matter. Why should it matter if you are a boy or a girl? If you want to dance, then you should dance, right?” Tom tells them. They look at each other then back at Tom before they nod their heads. “Aiden, come here for a second.” Aiden stands up and slowly walks over to him. Tom wraps his arm around him and pulls the boy to his side. “Girls, this is my friend, Aiden. Now, In this class we don’t pay attention to whether someone is a boy or a girl. We just dance and have fun,” Tom tells them.

“Wait… you’re the teacher??” one of the girls asks.

“No way.” another one pipes up.

“How is that possible,” yet another one questions.

“Well, I went to dance school. I practiced. I worked hard. I treated everyone nice no matter who they were. I went to Broadway for awhile, and now I’m here,” he tells them as they look at him with wide eyes making him laugh. “Okay, you girls stay here. We’ll start in a minute. Aiden, would you walk over here for a minute, please?” Aiden followed Tom out of earshot of the girls. You noticed when Tom knelt down in front of the girls, that’s when you started watching. You moved a little closer without being noticed by either of them, so you could hear. Tom sat against the wall as Aiden sat in front of him. “Aiden, I know you’re the only boy in the class, but I don’t want you to think of it like that. I’m here too. Always remember I’m here, okay?” Tom tells him as he sees Aiden smile up at him. “I know it can be hard doing what you love. It was hard for me too. The same things happened to me. Girls would pick on me when I went to my classes too. Just ignore them. If they feel like they need to say something, they’re just insecure and need something to make someone else feel bad to make themselves feel better and it’s not right. So you just have to ignore that and focus on what you love. Focus on the dancing, on the music. Can you do that?” Tom asks him. Aiden looks up at him with hopeful eyes.

“Yea,” he says with a smile. “I can do that.”

“Good! That’s my boy. If you ever want to talk about anything, you can always come to me, okay?” Tom tells him. Aiden nods his head. “Now, let’s go get this class started,” Tom says before he gets up and walks to the middle of the room to meet Sarah. You had to wipe your eyes before the tear rolled down your cheeks. That was the sweetest thing you had ever heard anyone tell your little boy, especially someone he had just met. After that little talk, the first two classes went off without a hitch. You only got to sit in on the two weekend classes because of work. There were four classes a week: 2 during the week and 2 on the weekend. Anna took him during the week and you on the weekend. You were surprised at how good he was getting so fast. It was the next weeked, and you were sitting against the wall with a few other parents. The one to your left, Jenn, you had met last week and thought you would probably become good friends. She nudged your arm.

“Yea, what’s up?” you whisper as you lean over towards her.

“What’s up with you two?” Jenn asks.

“Us two, who?” you look at her with a confused look on your face.

“You and the teacher…” she says with raised brows as she throws her eyes towards Tom. “He keeps looking over at you.”

“He does not…” you scoff at her. “Does he?”

“Well, uhhh… he’s not looking at me cause 1 - I’m married, 2 - I look like a bum,” she quietly laughs. You feel your face flush as you glance at him and catch him looking. He smiles at you before he looks away. “See…”

“There’s nothing going on,” you tell her as she gives you a look that tells you she doesn’t believe you. “I’m serious. I’ve met him once, a couple days before class started. Haven’t even talked to him since then.”

“Well, you should. Cause he wants to talk to you,” she tells you as she wiggles her eyebrows. You slap her arm as you laugh.

“Oh shut up,” you laugh and cover your face. The next day after class, most of the parents had already left but you were still waiting on Aiden to come back when Tom walked over and took a seat beside you.

“Hi,” he says with a smile.

“Hi,” you say back.

“I just wanted to tell you how much I love having Aiden in this class,” he tells you.

“Really? Is he doing okay?” you ask.

“Oh absolutely! He’s getting so good, so fast. It’s incredible,” he smiles at you.

“Good, I’m glad. He was so excited about doing this. It’s all he talks about anymore. And he loves you,” you tell him.

“Well, the feeling is mutual. He’s a special little boy,” Tom tells you with a look of happiness in his eye that makes your heart swell.

“Yea, he is. You don’t realize how much so,” you chuckle.

“How do you mean?” Tom asks as his brow furrowed in confusion.

“He… I almost lost him… and myself actually. He’s my little miracle,” you confess with a tear in your eye.

“And his dad…?” Tom asks cautiously.

“Nowhere to be seen. He left us after he found out I was pregnant,” you tell him.

“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I didn’t mean to pry,” he tells you.

“No, it’s ok. No harm done. I’m sure you just want to understand Aiden better,” you smile at him as he nods.

“Yea, yea… That… And you,” he tells you as he looks up at you slowly to meet your wide eyes.

“M-me?” you stutter making him laugh. “Why me?”

“Because I knew from the minute I saw you that you were different. Then when I met Aiden, I knew from how special he was, that just confirmed it,” he tells you as you bite your lip. “Would you let me take you out? Like on a date? First one just me and you, then if it goes well, second one all three of us?” You feel your breath hitch in your throat as he speaks. No one has ever been this nice to you since Aiden was born. Now here Tom was, being this perfect guy wanting to take you AND your son out… You nod your head.

“Yea, I’d like that,” you smile at him as you feel your face slightly flush. You look around the room and notice everyone else had left already. “Where’s Aiden?”

“I might have asked him to sit at the lockers until he saw me motion for him to come over,” Tom tells you as he scrunches his face. You put your face in your hands as you feel your face go red.

“Does he know?” you ask.

“No, I just told him I needed to talk to you. I didn’t say what about,” Tom tells you.

“Thank you. I just don’t like getting his hopes up, you know, cause I know how much he loves you. Not that I think things are gonna go badly, yea I’m gonna shut up now,” you ramble as you look for Aiden but can’t see him. Tom reaches up and lays his palm against your cheek turning your face back to his.

“Breathe,” he tells you softly before he presses his lips to yours as your eyes widen at the action. Your body stiffens as you feel his hand slip from your face to the back of your neck. Feeling his lips move against yours, you begin to let your body relax and move your lips against his. Placing your hands on his chest, you run one hand up into his dark brown curls, threading your fingers through the waves and pulling him closer. He smiles against your lips when he hears you let out a small whimper. He bites your bottom lip and tugs it gently as he pulls back from the kiss, pressing his forehead to yours and meeting your eyes.

“Wow,” you breathe out.

“God, you’re gorgeous,” he whispers against your lips making you bite yours.

“No,” you laugh. “I think that would be you, teach.” He gives you a crooked smile before he sits back and calls for Aiden. You see him running over and your face lights up.

“Hey Bub! Ready to go?” you ask him as he nods furiously.

“Yea, but can he come with us?” Aiden asks. You stutter over some words before you catch the right ones.

“O-oh… I-i… U-uhm… I don’t know Aiden. I think he has to go home,” you tell your little boy as he pouts.

“Can’t he come to dinner with us?” he looks up at you with puppy dog eyes.

“Aiden,” you warn.

“I can… If you want,” Tom offers as your eyes shoot up to his.

“No it’s okay. I’m sure you’re busy with things here,” you tell him before he shakes his head.

“No, actually everything’s done for the day. I was heading home for dinner myself,” he smiles at you. “How about it, Bub?” Tom says as he holds one hand out to Aiden and the other out to you. Aiden jumps up quickly and takes Tom’s hand.

“Come on Mommy! Let’s go!” Aiden bounces on his feet as he waits for you to take Tom’s other hand. You take his hand hesitantly as you stand up.

“I guess we’re starting with the second date,” you whisper making Tom chuckle as you walk out the door.

“Fine by me, love,” he winks at you. As you three made you way down the sidewalk hand in hand, you hoped this was the beginning to a beautiful relationship for all of you.

Just Domestic Things

Summary: A few months after the revolution Kara and Luther learn to integrate into normal domestic life. They experience things like first jobs, first vacations, first parent teacher interviews. Alice also gains a large family of brothers, aunt’s, uncles, and even a grandfather figure when they head to Detroit on vacation. They all fall into the routine of domestic things.

Canada was safe.

    It was everything Kara had imagined for her and her little family. For the first month they stayed with Rose’s brother in Ontario, he and wife were so kind. Alice even made friends with his daughter. All good things came to an end when Rose found them a place to stay, a small apartment in a tall building in a neighbouring town. There were things the three of them had to figure out for themselves now. She and Luther had quite the discussion whether to send Alice to school or not. After all, she wasn’t human and androids were still very much illegal in this country.

    There was the worry that Alice didn’t physically age and she couldn’t stay in the same grade forever. Maybe teachers or other parents would recognize them when they would pick her up from class? It was very distressing just thinking about it. Luther managed to lower her stress levels with his low voice and kind words. They would discuss the issue of schooling once they were fully moved in. The move wasn’t long as they didn’t own much; mostly they brought with them the clothes on their backs.

They finally crossed the schooling bridge.

    The two parents, Alice considered Luther just as much as a father as Kara was her mother, mutually decided that schooling would be the best for Alice. At least until the year was up. Alice started school in September and the two waved her off with tears in their eyes at the bus stop. She would have to take the bus to and from school until they could purchase a car. Luther was the first to get a job as a bouncer at a local club. It was a pretty low level job and he was a big intimidating guy, who wouldn’t hire him? At this point Luther was willing to take any job he could get, unfortunately he would have to leave in the evening and work all night.

    Kara was the next to snag a job working as a secretary in a large tech company. The job was fairly easy she was basically a glorified babysitter for the office. Kara quickly made friends with a few of the workers and Luther would sometimes have to force her to go out and hang out with said friends. She had a framed picture of Alice on her desk and a few of her drawn pictures hung up on the small corkboard she had. Everyone asked if she had a special someone in her life. Every time she would look away and let out a nervous laugh, and maybe she would think of Luther a little. Everyone’s jaws dropped when Luther showed up at the office with lunch for Kara one day – she left her lunch at home that morning.

    Everyone in the office watched to see where he’d go and to their surprise their sweet mom-friend of the office jumped up and walked over to the giant. “You forgot your lunch at home Kara, I thought I’d drop it off.” Kara would have the biggest smile on her face. These two were so in love everyone could see it. This would be the talk of the office for weeks. Kara wouldn’t hear the end of it. In the end she lied and said he was her husband. After all, they had to keep their facade that they were a human family up.

Parent teacher interviews were nerve-wracking.

    Luther was a paranoid father the entire time. Before they could even leave he kept asking if his outfit was ‘daddish’ enough. Kara helped him dress giving him some black pants and a floral button-up to wear. The shirt was Alice’s idea, she thought he looked great. There were so many parents there. It was hard to keep track of Alice as she kept running off whenever she saw one of her friends. Out of nervousness Luther ended up taking a hold of Kara’s hand, they walked around holding hands for the rest of the night. Alice’s teacher had nothing but compliments for their daughter which only made them more proud.

    In the end they managed to plan several play dates for Alice and her friends and even received a few invitations for upcoming birthday parties that Alice was invited to. The bus ride home was quiet and comfortable. Alice was busy sitting across from them looking out the window; Luther grabbed her hand again and gave it a firm squeeze. It would be a lie to say that Kara’s face didn’t turn bright blue. By the time they were home they sent Alice to bed and Luther left for work. Kara made sure to read Alice a book before heading to her own room.

    Androids didn’t require sleep but they could mimic sleep by going into stasis mode. Her internal clock would have her awake by seven in the morning to wake Alice up to get ready for school. Luther would arrive home just as she was leaving for work. For a long time her and Luther would be stuck in limbo with their feelings. They both did like each other but at the same time Alice was still their number one priority. Alice talked Luther into it and he eventually asked Kara out on a real date.

Vacations were so necessary.

    Once they got a car, which took a lot of saving, the first thing they did was take a weeklong vacation. Alice was pulled from school and they drove out to the border. It was a long drive and they stopped at many landmarks along the way (Alice has a bunch of knick-knacks and post cards in her room now). They went back to pay Detroit a well needed visit. After all, the revolution ended eleven months ago now. A lot has changed since they fled to Canada. The three of them paid Rose and Adam a visit and stayed at their farm house for the night. Rose was so thrilled to hear how the three of them were doing.

    While in Detroit they replenished their Thirium levels. Kara insisted that they pay a visit to Markus to thank him for his help. Apparently Markus lived in a mansion? This mansion was huge. Markus was happy to see them and glad to know that they weren’t dead. Alice got to paint with Markus, have Josh teach her about history, go to the park with Simon, and North taught her some self-defense. Markus almost shut down when Alice called him Uncle Markus. North and Kara got along surprisingly well. The four core members of Jericho were honestly like an extended family. Okay so maybe their little family was expanding?

    They went for walks in Detroit’s parks while on vacation, Alice loved the outdoors. Honestly the two of them couldn’t be happier to see their daughter so excited and full of smiles. Luther and Kara almost exploded with stress when Alice was suddenly pinned down by a rather large dog. The owner came running over yelling and Kara almost stopped functioning for the second time when she saw that it was Connor. The RK800 pulled the dog off of Alice and offered the little girl a hand. It took him less than a second to realize who they were and gave them a very timid smile. He remembers how he almost got them killed back when he was just a machine. An older man came jogging up to them, he was very obviously human.

    It turns out his name is Hank Anderson and he’s a police Lieutenant at the DPD. “So, you’re the people Connor here told me about.” He’s rather rough around the edges but a real softie once you warm up to him.

“Can we go play at the park?” Alice is jumping up and down and pointing to the nearby playground.

    Kara notices how she’s pointing to Connor as well. She’s rather apprehensive to let her go and play with the same android that was hunting them down nearly a year ago. Nonetheless, Kara can never say no so she goes to the park with them. Hank and Luther sit on a bench nearby and talk about ‘dad things’. Kara and Connor take turns pushing Alice on the swing. The two are quite quiet. Kara is normally a forgiving person and although Connor has apologized before she is still wary around the ex-deviant-hunter. She’s startled when she hears his voice inside her head. They’ve been living around humans for so long she forgot that they could make mental connections.

    The RK800 starts apologizing profusely and although he was smiling on the outside his shaky voice in the connection gave away his guilt. “I’m sorry too Connor.” From her lengthy time being a mother she realizes how everyone makes mistakes and not everyone can control what they’re doing. All is forgiven and Connor becomes a sort of older brother to Alice. The two of them were running around with Sumo for the rest of the afternoon. Kara had to suppress her laughter whenever she heard Hank make a sarcastic comment. Hank is definitely a grumpy grandpa.

    On their last day of vacation in Detroit they meet up with Markus and company in the morning to say their goodbyes. All four of them shower Alice in gifts to take home with her. Uncle Markus gives her some paint, Uncle Josh gifts a book, Uncle Simon gives her a camera, and Auntie North gives Alice some brass knuckles. Kara and Luther were mildly horrified by the last gift. Their next stop was the police precinct; Alice had two drawings she wanted to give Connor and Hank. They mistake RK900 for Connor. He looks so similar to Connor yet so different. The more they look at him the more different they realize he is from Connor.

    His name is Nines and his partner is quite the character. Everyone in the precinct has to double-take because Gavin Reed is actually so soft when it comes to children. Alice is quite fond of Gavin to Luther and Kara’s dismay. Connor and Hank find them soon enough once they realize what all the other officers are looking at. “Alright Reed step away from the kid before you scare her to death and take your ken doll with you.” Hank waves the detective away who looks about ready to hurl an insult. Gavin is surprisingly respectful to Kara, he maybe or maybe not intimidated by her boyfriend, which confuses everyone else.

    Alice presents her drawings to Connor and Hank who graciously accept them. Connor treats this crayon drawing as if it were a piece from Van Goghs gallery. Nines is much more quiet than Connor, more perceptive and judging. His gaze is harsh when aimed at everyone else but it’s much softer when he’s speaking to Alice. The small android asks if Connor is Nines’ older brother and Connor is quick to say that he is. So now Alice has two older brother figures? Alice drags Nines and Connor off to do some drawing in the kid’s area of the precinct. “So, when’s the wedding?” Hank asks.

    Luther and Kara just about shut down from embarrassment. Were they going to get married, did they need to? The visit to the precinct is short lived when they get a call about a homicide. Alice is sad to leave her new extended family but excited to tell her friends all about her vacation. The drive back across the border has all three of their stress levels raised to significant levels; at least they aren’t conducting temperature checks anymore. They make it home and the next day Alice is back in school. For show and tell she talks about her trip to Detroit and talks about her family. At the next parent teacher interview Luther and Kara have to talk about their large family that they hadn’t previously mentioned before.

    Alice is always video chatting with her brothers. Alice wants to be a detective just like them when she’s older. Kara and Luther are saddened by this; sometimes Alice forgets that she won’t grow older like her friends. Her parents just want her to be like any other kid. Summer holiday starts and Alice is sad that she won’t see her friends. The two parents did some research on how fast children age and grow and decide that Alice can head into the next grade. Alice has a sleepover with some of her friends, Luther is everyone’s dad. Swimming is fun and Alice enjoys it. The three of them get good use out of the community swimming pool downstairs.

They just love seeing how happy Alice is.

    Seven months after the revolution and androids are still forbidden in Canada. They are constantly worrying for Alice’s safety. If she were to get injured they wouldn’t know what to do. Before school starts again they take another trip to Detroit to see the family. A lot of pictures are taken while there. Connor and Nines offer to watch Alice while Luther takes Kara out for another date night. The RK twins are chaotic babysitters. Also, Gavin and Nines are closer than originally thought so Alice officially calls him Uncle Gavin. The detective threatens to disassemble both Connor and Nines if they breathe a word about this to the precinct.

    Luther takes Kara to an art gallery because he knows how much she loves art. Their whole apartment is covered head to toe in paintings, photography, and anything she finds artistic. The two of them really love each other so it isn’t surprising when Luther gets down on one knee and proposes. Of course, Kara is a sobbing mess as she accepts the ring. She didn’t expect to be so happy. She gives Luther the most passionate kiss ever and she doesn’t care whose watching. They don’t have much money so the ring is a simple silver wedding band. Kara notices how Luther’s name is engraved on the inside of the ring in cursive letters.

    They’re smiling like idiots when they show up to Gavin Reed’s apartment (Nines is a temporary guest living there). Their smiles disappear when they see Alice standing on top of a coffee table residing over her ‘kingdom’. Said kingdom was made up of Connor, Nines, Uncle Gavin, and Uncle Gavin’s four cats. How did their little family grow so much? Alice’s eyes lit up when she saw her parents, she nearly fell off the coffee table and onto her bottom from how fast as was going. Luther caught her when she jumped at him and held her close. “Hello Alice, did you have fun?” The girl was quick to nod her head. The two RK units and the detective stood and looked to their feet, all three of the mildly embarrassed.

    Once they got over their initial embarrassment Connor and Nines were quick to find the silver ring on Kara’s finger. Everyone was happy for them, no one more than Alice though. Nines even cracked a smile and after elbowing Gavin in the side the human detective muttered congratulations. This new information spread like wildfire through their family. Kara and Luther could only guess that Connor told Markus who in turn told Simon, North, and Josh. A little celebration was held at Markus’s home for the two engaged androids.

Familial gatherings.

They needed to do more of those.

    Kara didn’t know what to do with all of this attention on her. Luther was quiet; all the boys made him feel a part of the group. Everyone asked when the wedding was. The two of them had yet to decide. It would most likely be small a wedding. They could only afford so much at this time. After the get together they embarked back on their drive to Canada. Everything went back into their usual routine once they arrived back home. Alice was happy to be back and headed to her bedroom to put herself into a well-needed stasis mode. Luther turned the television on which had been left on the Jazz music station, he may or may not have picked up a fondness for that type of music after hanging out with Hank.

    Perhaps he even grabbed Kara’s hand after hearing the enchanting music and pulled her to the middle of the living room. Through whispered words he may have even asked her to dance with him. Kisses planted to her forehead, the swaying of their hips, and the sparkle in their gaze when they looked at each other – this was love. Screw everyone who ever said androids couldn’t love. The two didn’t see the little android with her camera taking a few pictures of her parents swaying together. In the morning Kara would be standing in front of the mirror in their shared room fixing her blue blazer for work. “You look perfect Kara, you’ll always look perfect.” Her face turned blue whenever he would compliment her.

    Each day they were learning more and more about themselves and about how to be a family. They wouldn’t ever be normal and they knew that. But little things like going to work, assisting Alice with homework (although she didn’t need help), heading on vacation to visit family, going to school functions, and waking out of stasis in a comforting embrace – yeah, those were just domestic things.

You Don’t Know Everything

The hallways were empty as the senior class poured from their testing in the cafeteria. Graduation was days away, so the twelfth grade students were completing their finals as the lower grades continued on their normal schedules. The athletic brunette dodged around a few groups to catch up with the curvy African American girl arm and arm with the statuesque blonde boy.

“Markayla,” Meg purposely pulled her friend’s backpack, dragging her away from her longtime boyfriend, Mason.

“Meg!” Markayla squealed, shoving the other girl back. “How’d you do? I aced the essay, but completely blanked on the section about mapping the post-Soviet countries.“

“I did alright, anyways, I already have an A. If I got my name wrong; I wouldn’t fail.” Meg grinned, sidestepping as Mason fell back in line with her bestie.

“Do you have to work this weekend?” Markayla asked the tall boy.

“Nope, but I have early morning baseball practice.” Mason admitted.

“Gross!” Markayla complained. “I want some crew time! I feel like we never get together, just the five of us anymore.” Meg laughed, shaking her head at the pouting girl.

“I have to babysit tonight anyways,” Meg reminded her.

“Ugh, fine.” She grinned, proving her whining in jest. “Next weekend for sure then.”

“It’s a date.” Meg and Mason said in unison before the three of them broke into hysterics.

The bath water was sloshing at dangerous levels as Meg Callahan shampooed her little cousin’s hair. She made sure to not let any suds slip down his face, while expertly shaping his unruly hair into a row of spikes.

“I’m a Spinosaurus!” the boy roared, while appreciating his reflection in the reflective faucet.

“Alright, Mr. Spinosaurus, you have ten minutes to play and then I’ll be back.”

“Twenty minutes?” He asked with a pouty flutter of his eyelashes.

“Ten, don’t push your luck!”

“Bye, Meg. See you in twenty minutes!” His tiny voiced screeched. Meg refused to argue further and left the damp bathroom tile behind, heading to the living room and her waiting calculus notes.

Later that night as Meg was tucking in the suddenly tired preschooler, he asked an impressive question. “Why is graduation such a big deal?”

“Because it means I am done with normal school.” Meg tried to explain as she found the exact toys he needed to fall asleep each night.

“You still have school, but you have to move there?” He understood pretty well for a four year old.

“I am going to school in New York, but I won’t move there until August, bud.”

“I don’t want you to move, Meggy-Pie.” His voice was soft.

“I know, but just think, the new baby will be here before I leave. It’s going to be crowded!”

“Can you stay and the baby goes to college?” He suggested, his plush Chewbaca tight against his cheek.

“Nice try, but not this time.” Meg answered gently, tucking his drying curls behind his ear. She sat on his bed and watched him fall asleep, memorizing him in this moment as fleeting as any.

“GUYS!” Garcia chirped over JJ’s speakerphone. “You all need to get your booties in here, it’s starting!” Spencer and JJ shared a glance, leading the way to the tech office.

Over Lewis’, Alvez’ and Simmons’ faces a confused look passed, though they fell inline behind the senior agents of the BAU. On the numerous monitors above Garcia’s desk was a single live feed: a profile shot of a young woman in a navy blue graduation cap atop her brunette mop of shoulder-length hair.

“I can’t believe she is already graduating,” JJ gushed.

“I am surprised Chris is keeping it together long enough to hold the phone steady!” Garcia added, dotting her eyes with a tissue.

“Hey, look, there’s Markayla too!” Reid pointed to the softly permed head of Meg’s best friend one row back and two chairs over.

“Guys, I am glad you’re all excited, but who is she?” Lewis asked.

“Right?” Alvez and Simmons said in unison.

The screen shifted to a little boy with black curls hoping excitedly on a gymnasium bench beside his mother’s protruding lap. Garcia squealed and clapped. A deep voice said, “Alright Callahans, say hi to our viewing audience.” The beautiful woman and hyper child gave the obligatory greeting to the phone’s camera. A microphone crackled, signalling the start of the ceremony.

“That’s Kate?” Alvez asked in a low voice, leaning towards his husband’s ear.

“Yeah, the little guy was the reason she left the bureau. That’s Kit he’ll be five three months before Michael.” Spencer explained.

“He’s gorgeous!” Garcia cooed. “Oh! Do you think Rossi knows it’s today? Should I call him?” Just as she spun for consensus a heart from Uncle Dave’s profile floated on the screen. JJ grinned, spinning Garcia back towards the monitors.

JJ leaned back, speaking to Lewis and Simmons, “Just before Kate left, we rescued Meg and her best friend, Markayla, from an online ring operation for murdering sadists.”

“Yikes,” Simmons responded, “Can’t really blame her for stepping away. Family is too important.”

“The unsubs were actually targeting Kate, so she had more reason to leave than most.” Reid added.

“How awful,” Lewis mused as the pep band ended the school song. The routine faculty speakers and valedictorian address followed. The whole process was pleasantly succinct. Once the students began lining up, the camera moved. Chris was searching for a better angle for his niece’s diploma acceptance. The awkward zoom found the stage and refocused on the podium and the waiting principal. The A’s were a small group, just a single row of seats at the front of the basketball court. They barrelled through the B’s, soon it was Meg’s turn, the BAU teammates lunged forward in anticipation.

“Margaret Callahan,” the announcer read loudly. The agents clapped and hooted in celebration.

“Hey, Spence?” Alvez whispered to his lanky husband. “I think it’s time, we really should meet with the social worker again.” Spencer grinned, nodding in enthusiastic agreement. They firmly held hands, always careful to keep their office affection professionally modest.

“I think that calls for more celebration!” Emily burst into the cramped office with Dixie cups of sparkling cider on a ramshackle tray from the break room.

“To all the BAU babies, be they grown or still unknown!” Garcia toasted to a cacophony of cheers.

It was two weeks later that Kate and Chris had been able to rent a hall for Meg’s graduation party. Coordinating party schedules with the parents and grandparents of Meg’s four closest friends (Markayla, Mason, Jian and Grant) had been a feat, but as any challenge Kate faced it head on. The guests were due any minute as the teenagers quickly put out the remaining chairs. Little Kit was half dancing/ half chasing balloons across the stage as the sound system was set up.

Meg and Markayla were hovering between the front doors and the gift table, fixing and reshuffling the decorative confetti around the gift bags. Markayla’s mom helped Chris bring out the food for the buffet, while Kate chatted casually with Mason’s grandparents, rubbing her swollen belly. The kids had maintained  such a strong bond because their parents or guardians all trusted and communicated too. The Davis and Callahan families knew all too well the dangers with not knowing your kids’ friends.

Mason’s freshman sister played with Kit, hoping to show Kate she was ready to be their new babysitter when Meg went away to school. By ones or pairs, more classmates and teachers swung by the party, all still giddy with the freedom of summer. It was about an hour after the party started when a dark haired man and his moping teenager walked in, looking for Kate. His lined face broke into an unusual smile when he saw her shuffling her swollen ankles towards them.

“Hotch! I can’t believe you actually made it!” She beamed, taking him in a deep hug. Kate then turned to the shy gawky boy, almost as tall as his father now. “Now this handsome young man isn’t little Jack!”

“Hi, Kate,” a deep voice answered back. Tears stung her eyes as she took the boy in an awkward hug.

“I am so glad you could make it!” Kate exclaimed, scanning the crowd for the woman of the hour. “Meg! Come say hi to the Hotchners.”

Meg, Markayla and Grant all moved as a unit to the small circle of mostly former FBI agents. They made their introductions and caught up. Kate sharing Meg’s plans for the fall with pride, asking what life after the Bureau entailed for them. Life was good, not perfect, not easy, but definitely worth it for these two small families that had lost so much so young.

Soon Chris brought out the projector screen and blasted Meg’s baby pictures for the entertainment of her guests. The years unraveled and they began to see the woman she was on her way to be. If one looked closely, you may have glanced a picture or two with her black hair, taken before her and Markayla shaved their heads for a fundraiser freshman year.

After the cake was eaten and the karaoke was sung, the Callahans sat in the abandoned banquet hall in a contented quiet. Little bits of streamers and confetti littered the floor and their hair, thanks to the now sleeping boy drooling on his dad’s shoulder.

“How did it go so fast?” Kate remarked in awe.

“I would say that it took forever, but you know, perspective.” Meg teased.

“I just can’t believe we won’t get another party like this until the little guy graduates, class of ‘33, represent.” Chris stage whispered. Meg and Kate shared an eye roll before laughing lovingly at the cheesy man.

“You never know, maybe I’ll get married before Kit graduates.” Meg challenged, leaving masks of shock on her aunt and uncle’s faces. Quickly she chimed in alongside them, “Nah!”

The night ended with a comedic clean up for the day to remember.

It’s night already and Iida was rescued by his classmates Midoriya and Todoroki. After that the hard and deep fight ended, they tied Stain up and they bumped into a group of pro heroes that were sent there by Endevour. When everyone was distracted by the tied killer, a flying Noumu grabbed Midoriya and flew away.

<<What is that?>> a pro hero asks pointing the sky, <<A shooting star?>>

<<This is not the moment to stare the stars!>> yells Gran Torino. “It went out of my reach…”

The heroes stare at the deep night sky, a bright blue thing is flying towards them, and in a second…

The hero killer moves to stop the monster, the blue creature encloses Midoriya and touches the ground sliding due to the high speed, while Stain smashes down the Noumu. The heroes get ready to fight again, they didn’t understand clearly what happened.

<<….(Y/N)-I mean, Belial?!>> Izuku finds himself in her arms while she is crouched down studying the enemy, <<W-what are you doing here?>>

Walking holding the man’s hand, you stop near the woman and his son keeping a certain distance, you never know how the mother could react when the city is under attack.

Izuku and Shouto are as surprised as you, who would never think that the number two hero would do a thing like that. Especially, if the person involved is someone that clearly didn’t like him at all and crushed his pride in front of his son and daughter. Tenya apporaches you and apologizes to you because he was responsible of Todoroki’s injuries, he wanted to be blamed for that, yelled for that, but he received a warm hug and only kind words.

<<I’m the one who should apologize. I saw your insecurity, I understood your intentions, still, I left you alone even if I’m your friend. I’ll save you from the darkness next time, I swear… What was your hero name?>>

“This girl…” <<Ingenium.>>

<<You understand the mistake, and now that you felt the darkness, you can recognize them.>> she smiles and looks at him, <<If they are too strong, I’m here for you all, just call my name and I will lend to you my flames to win.>>

<<Yes… Thank you, Belial.>> he cries again and tries to hide it.

<<Who is he?>> whispers Izuku, <<I never saw him… Is he (Y/N)-chan’s mentor?>>

The two are seeing and touching the phone frequently, they talk and nod often to each other to check and agree about what they are talking about. After a few minutes, someone runs crying your name. You turn to ask what happened, but you see a child hurt and sobbing. Wait, how he knows your hero name? You never saw that kid before… What’s happening here?

A group of teenagers from the church is headed on a missions trip to Mexico (which Andy joins impulsively) and one of the girls who heads the trip is played by Jarman.

3 Randall Park

 Remember Asian Jim? Yeah, the guy in the cold open from "Andy's Ancestry" (S9E3). He is Jim and Pam's actor friend who tries to convince Dwight that Jim has been Asian his entire life, and Dwight has simply not noticed.

2 Anna Camp

Camp plays Pam's sister, Penny, in The Office. She is seen during Pam's wedding and mistakes Kevin for Oscar's boyfriend Gil.

One of my favorite things about being a new co-host on MarketHer is that I now have this new, exciting platform to connect with people and hear their story.

When we asked people to tell us their perspective on opportunity, I’ll be the first to admit that I assumed the stories would be based around the marketing industry. Boy, was I wrong -- and thank goodness.

Danielle Russell reached out to us because she wanted to share her story about being a military spouse and what she thought that would mean for her future. When she first became a military girlfriend (turned wife after a few years), she quickly realized that she felt as though she didn't have a unique identity or value as the 'other half' of the relationship.

And, once they married, it didn't get better -- it was assumed she would sit at home, volunteer for opportunities at the base with other spouses, and she wouldn't be able to advance her own career.

This generational trait is a significant departure from baby boomers—who constitute much of the senior leadership of the military—of whom only 47 percent are in a dual-professional relationship.

Military Spouses Are More Than Just Statistics

So, with many millennials approaching careers and family life differently, what can be done?

Simply said -- the first step is having the right conversations. If you're a military spouse and you feel as though you're unsure about how you continue to advance your own career, talk to your employer about:

Realistically how you can continue to do your position remotely

Ways you can continue to support your team, even in another state or country

Focus on apps and tools that make remote life seamless - like Slack and Zoom.

What you'll do to make sure that no one is feeling added pressure or stress

Will you work different hours to make sure you're on the same time zone?

Will you have regular meetings with your boss to ensure that you're still hitting your performance marks?

And if you're unable to keep your current position, begin having conversations with other spouses who are also passionate about their careers. You can use each other as a support group, like Danielle did.  She explained:

"With the Community Spouses' Club, we aimed to fill those gap years in spouses careers by hosting resume writing workshops, teaching them LinkedIn (and hiring a professional photographer to take their headshot), starting a book club all about Professional Development and Leadership, and engaging female military leaders to come and speak to the spouses. As the Vice President of the Club, I pioneered this program and tried to expand by speaking at several military events in Baumholder. From there, I was invited in a small group of spouses to represent the community and speak to GEN. Mark Milley's (the Chief of Staff of the Army) wife about spouse empowerment at overseas duty stations."

Companies are shifting and changing the way they've always done business because the landscape is changing.

More and more businesses are considering a remote workforce to be the norm and if you're a military spouse who wants to keep advancing your career, you could lead the change at your company.

How a Remote Culture Can Support Military Spouses

At IMPACT, nearly half of our team works remotely and we've been lucky to work for a company that embraces it.

While many of us have not been in Danielle's shoes, we do have employees who have been active duty in the past and others who are married to currently active members. 

I reached out to them to get a better understanding on how this military structure impacted their families and how their families or spouses had to adapt:

"The struggle is maintaining “normal” family status. A lot of military spouses get caught up in this “I can’t do this mentality.” Really, everything is still available. You just have to adjust the roles a bit and scheduling is hard. 

My wife had to raise a 3-year-old, do school interviews, babysitter interviews, and worked full time. All while I was gone. She also had to schedule all the family stuff. Still does to this day even though I’m out now."

"Supporting your Marine is paramount. This includes have a positive mental attitude when dealing with extended periods apart ("deployments") for 6 to 9 months; often in austere, combat environments. There are many challenging days where having supportive co-workers makes the difference.

When it comes to working, no matter your level of industry expertise and experience, the majority of private sector companies simply do not understand the military life and won't hire you for remote work. They require you move to their office location. This is extremely frustrating, mostly because their HR has no empathy and they make you feel like you are the one preventing yourself from being hired."

In regards to the importance of finding a flexible, remote job "Nothing could be more important. There are often days in the week that require you to step away from your civilian life and be on-base for family readiness training and support activities."   - Jennifer Howard

"Kathleen had to get certified in each state we lived in, she is an elementary school teacher. Part of our time on active duty, she worked as either a part time teacher and one year as a full time teacher. 

When we left the army, it took her 4 1/2 years to get a long term sub job and still hasn’t gotten a full time gig. Mostly based on the fact that she got her masters while we were on active duty and doesn’t have a ton of experience, because we moved a bunch. 

Bottom line - spouses of active military service members bare a ton of weight, especially when transitioning out of active service. They have usually bore the responsibility to take care of the family and handle things at home, which impacts their ability to find work easily. Something needs to be done to help fix this." - Chris Duprey

Team Spotlight: Alexis Grason

The latest installment in our regular Q&A spotlight session where we sit down with members of the FJY team to find out a little bit more about what exactly they do here and what makes them tick. 

This Month: Senior Financial Advisor Alexis Grason, CFP ®, RICP ® 

  What is something that your colleagues and clients can count on you to bring to FJY Financial? 

Vulnerability. One of my most treasured and humbling approaches to life is just “showing up,” a coined concept from Brené Brown. I strive to be present in all moments- comfortable ones and uncomfortable ones. When the commitment is just to show up, then you release the pressure valve. There is an opportunity to be authentic and unattached to a specific outcome. Whether it is just showing up for a 6 AM Bootcamp class to get my butt kicked, for a feedback session with my new team, or opening up to new relationships with clients, I am engaged. It may result in a triumphant success, bloody failure or something in between. Either way, I am exposed, insecurities and all, seeking connection, collaboration, and growth.  

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you great up? 

Pediatrician or teacher. My mom was a teacher for almost 40 years. I grew up playing teacher in her classroom, standing at the blackboard, chalk in hand, in front of a class of pretend students. Imagine my rude awakening when I was a camp counselor and had to control a room full of energized kids. I quickly learned to enjoy smaller groups and babysitting! Then came my pediatrician dream, which came to a halt when I suffered through college chemistry and barely made it out alive. That was right before I discovered financial planning and how it combined two fulfilling disciplines: relationships and analytics. And then the REAL journey began… 

What have you always wanted to try, but have never done? 

SKYDIVING! I tried it indoors, but that only made me want to leap into (or out of) the real thing even more. A favorite client once told me, cross off one item each year rather than waiting for the typical bucket list approach at retirement. THAT is how I am living my life! 

What is the best book you’ve ever read? 

Quiet by Susan Cain and so many others! Reading is an activity to stretch my thinking and challenge existing paradigms. It fuels my endeavors for growth. Quiet was one of my most memorable reads because it clarified why I seek and savor solitude, reflection, and uninterrupted focus time. I am an ambivert, which means fulfillment to me is a cadence of extrovert and introvert traits. My husband is one of the most introverted people I have ever met, and this book helped me understand myself and him (and half the population!) better. I also enjoyed Susan Cain’s writing and overall ability to challenge trending patterns of thinking. For example, data supports the open office concept not really being better for collaboration. Maybe I will get another spotlight to share my top 10 books! 

Where is your favorite place to be? 

My new three-season porch. It is not finished yet as plywood still lines the floor, but we dragged in the lime green Adirondack chairs from the deck. Time sits still out there as I enjoy the cool breeze of the summer nights or the fresh morning air. It has become my new favorite place, combining two joys for me: being outside listening to birds and crickets (without the bugs!), and relishing quiet time of solitude to read and reflect. Enjoying a cup of coffee out there with my husband before my daughter wakes up is the best way to start a Saturday morning! 

Before working at FJY, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? 

At 15, I got a worker’s permit to obtain employment at Kings Dominion. My mom drove I-95 every day of the summer to take me to and from work (45 minutes each way). I committed to working all summer long, as summer employees received a bonus if you made it to Labor Day. I have been a babysitter, a waitress, and a retail clerk at various stores, but this job was the toughest for me. They bumped me around from place to place, and the summer sun on the black asphalt was fierce. What could be worse than the heat? The embarrassment of an insecure 15-year-old girl adorning a required uniform of navy-blue shorts down to her knees (gasp!), a white polo shirt, hat, and white Keds. I made it through the summer, but tried something else the next year! 

What is your favorite part about working for FJY so far?  

First and foremost, Jake’s competitiveness (though he doesn’t always win!)  

Laurie’s graceful balancing act of wearing multiple hats. 

Jon’s transparency about the business’ structure and strategic plan. 

Marjorie’s dedication to passing on her wealth of knowledge to the next generation of planners. 

Larry’s healthy respect for compliance…and his accent. 

Jon Ludwig’s “I just got out of college and know how to make you feel old” sense of humor and slang.  

Jessica’s love for all things process oriented (this comes straight from the heart!)  

Alan’s ability to go off on any tangent and come up with a good idea about ANYTHING. 

Onari’s enormous union jack flag behind his desk…and his accent. 

Kelly’s understated confidence in all things FJY. 

Evan’s love of traveling even if he does pack the night before for a two-week trip! 

Paulette’s energy and willingness to always help (or compliment my shoes!) 

Matt’s dry sarcasm about “Alexa.” 

Angie’s ability to take FJY to the next level. 

Shelley’s warmth and talent to make anyone feel comfortable. 

Matt Lazor’s sincere curiosity for ALL questions.
