Sen Çal Kapımı 1 - Episode Recap
To be honest, this series of posts is mostly going to be a fashion roast. But DISCLAIMER! I really do love this show and Turkish TV in general, it’s just my preferred mode of media analysis is to pick things apart. 😂And I need everyone to know that I am very pro-women, and believe people should be able to dress how they want and not be judged for it or be looked down upon for it. But oh my god this wardrobe department/costumer needs to be STOPPED. I also have zero credentials to be talking about fashion, but will that stop me?
I’m going to make these posts assuming you’ve watched the show, and just comment on whatever comes up. There will be spoilers. Let’s go!
We start off with a voiceover from Eda Yıldız, an A+ romcom trope. (It wasn’t until my rewatch that I remembered that Eda used to do VOs at random intervals, and I’m kind of glad she stopped tbh.) She is a strong woman who wants to get her education and become a landscape architect/designer. She was all set to do that until- dun dun dun! - Serkan Bolat destroyed everything.
Check out that dart board of a man (and this is the only time we see that photo there). And these outfits are probably the most normal and reasonable clothes she wears in the show. She’s a beautiful young woman, who was a college student, and now works outdoors as a florist. 10/10 outfit.
Of course that transitions us into an epic slomo of Serkan exiting his private jet. He of course begins to berate his assistant on the phone in a way a friend described as reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada.
@teamnick‘s commentary back when she first started the show.
Serkan returns to his office for the first time in 2 months after working on business deals in London. Chaos ensues: Miranda Priestly is baaaaaaack.
See... here we have some good fashion choices! We meet the girls for the first time, while they try to sneak off to their graduation without making Eda feel bad that she won’t be receiving her diploma. Melek “Melo” is dressed in a sweet dress with a bold, romantic color, which captures her personality perfectly. Ceren, the rich daughter from a family of lawyers, looks a bit more high-fashion. The dress is short but it has long sleeves and no cleavage so it works out to be chic and elegant. Fifi is unapologetically herself with her full-black, punk wardrobe. Eda is again dressed in a pretty, but casual outfit. Nicely put together for her lower-middle-class lifestyle and her job as a florist.
Enter: the plot device to get our protagonists together. Serkan’s face says it all.
We are then introduced to the main couple’s respective cars. Serkan has his 2020 BMW (though the show blocks out the copyrighted branding) while Eda’s beat up SUV is clearly unreliable. What’s that? Another plot device being introduced? I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Also, I just noticed this, but for someone as uptight as Serkan, I’m surprised at how fun his suit jacket lining is. If I’m not mistaken the pattern is of a bunch of rainbow fish. #Snazzy, but they seem out of character?
Plot highlights:
Eda learns she can come back to school and finish her final year, but she’s lost her scholarship and will have to pay. She can’t.
Serkan gives his talk at the graduation (?)-- Is his talk just for architecture students? If so, why are Ceren, Fifi, and Melo there? We’ll never know. I know, I know... it’s all for the ~plot~
Eda calls Serkan out in front of everyone for taking away the scholarship that she earned from his company, Art Life. He is confused but unrepentant. She refuses to tell him her name.
She tries to deface his car with lipstick after keying the side (we never hear about the damage to his car after that). He catches her and wants to call the police, so she impulsively handcuffs them together with the plot devices from Selin’s wedding invitation sitting on his passenger seat.
They then have to go to Serkan’s urgent business meeting with an out-of-town client. Eda drives while they’re handcuffed together. Bickering ensues.
What is this? Foreshadowing? Symbolism?? Eda’s last name “Yıldız” is the Turkish word for “star” so... file that away for later.
One of my favorite parts about watching Turkish dramas is the experience of trying to decipher the fan translations. Add to the fact that Turkish only has 1 pronoun *chef’s kiss*
Eda refuses to take the elevator to the 15th floor (we’ll learn about her claustrophobia later). Serkan is equally as stubborn, saying she owes him for screwing up his day. But he has met his match in Eda with regards to stubbornness. They take the stairs.
More highlights:
First instance of fake dating - they need to hide the handcuffs from his client so Eda pretends she’s his girlfriend and a fellow investor.
The girls track Eda’s phone to the hotel and try to find her by asking around the premises.
Eda charms the client into selling his land to Serkan.
We learn that Serkan is allergic to strawberries and has a lot of health anxiety. He’s a very tightly wound person.
Serkan says “Mashallah,” translator hears 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Engin brings way too many people to open the handcuffs and chaos ensues.
I feel like nothing can do justice to the comedy of 58:45 to 1:00:00 with Fifi using a bobby pin as a lock pick. The dramatic editing is 👌🏼
Leyla gets fired for somehow causing this drama??? And she is so happy to leave that stressful workplace omg, we don’t deserve her 🥺
Serkan and Eda go their separate ways, Eda prepared to never see her enemy again, but of course her phone and purse are still in his car so she has to go to his office at Art Life and confront him again.
Serkan has found out that Whoops, Art Life did cancel the study abroad scholarships to cut costs, but his CFO did it without telling him. And Serkan is pissed, but I think mainly about the fact that Eda did have some (SOME) grounds for yelling at him in public.
Leyla then explains the nonsensical reasoning behind her being fired-but-not-fired and still working. (Spoiler alert: she never goes anywhere and she is my favorite side character to this day).
Eda: “How can I piss Serkan off?” Leyla: “Find a mistake he’s made and he will fixate on it forever. But you won’t find anything.” Eda: “Hold my beer.”
Eda walks into Serkan’s office and his meeting. She gets her purse back and they fight about him not being willing to apologize for ruining her life and education. He refuses and says she owes him an apology for embarrassing him in public (no, dude).
He wants to give her back the scholarship and make it all go away but she rightly tells him that it won’t fix her broken pride from begging the company and her university for a second chance. But somehow her calling him a heartless “Robot” is what gets to him???? And he short-circuits. Eda walks out triumphant.
~dRaMa!~
MEANWHILE
Melo, as well as being a perfume sales girl, also works as a flight attendant and wants Eda to cover her shift (we’ll get into how that doesn’t make sense in a minute)
Eda says no, she’s going to meet her boyfriend, Cenk, who she hasn’t seen in months and has just returned from Italy.
Enter: Selin. Serkan’s ex who he dumped a while ago and is now engaged to the heir of a hotel empire. Serkan doesn’t like this. The two of them grew up together and are set to each inherit 50% of the holding company that Serkan’s father currently runs.
Right away Selin serves us with a gender reveal level color scheme. Personally not a fan. They confirm that Serkan is coming to her engagement party tomorrow.
Meanwhile Eda meets up with Cenk. Her outfit is still reasonable and cute for her character. He looks mildly like a hobo and doesn’t seem to have anything going for him (I know he’s a throwaway character but the two of them really don’t have anything in common).
This creeper keeps staring at them, but Cenk tries to explain it away and says he’s busy and can’t meet her again until the day after tomorrow. Eda is disappointed but accepts this. Creeper girl remains and remains a red flag to viewers, but apparently not to Eda.
Cut to later that evening, and of course our broody main man enjoys astronomy in his free time (???) idk what he’s charting and to what purpose but okay?
Eda finds a mini first aid kit in her purse that Serkan put there before returning it. Queue montage of them treating their respective wrists for handcuff-related injuries. #couplegoals
Of course we also needed a sepia-toned flashback to earlier that day when the handcuffs contrived their faces to get too close together. #romance
Finallyyyyyyy it’s morning again and a new day.
Since Eda can’t see Cenk (good, he’s so boring), she agrees to fill in as a flight attendant for Melo, who’s side job is for a private plane company.
Now. This should not be a thing. Eda was in college to be a landscape architect and now works as a florist for her aunt... Where has she learned any relevant skills to work as a flight attendant?? Presumably nowhere. And I really don’t think a private plane company would be so easygoing about just having a random person fill in to cover for her friend?
But does this show care about that? What do you think...
Also, instead of the standard white shirt, black skirt uniform requirements, the girls decide that this skimpy dress and heels is fine? Hmmm
Also lol @ Melo for assuming that the client who wants jasmine tea and fruit salad is probably a woman. And her telling Eda that the PRIVATE JET COMPANY would in fact have its own tea was very random and unnecessary.
Back at the Bolat house compound, we meet the parents: Aydan and Alptekin. We’ll see them again later. Selin’s engagement party is today.
Meanwhile Eda is just.... being a flight attendant, I guess??? And who could possibly be the passenger she has to take care of? Take a wild guess. Of course it’s Serkan Bolat.
And of course that tiny dress (THAT ALSO HAS A LEG SLIT?? WHY?? I really don’t need to see her vagina) looks very practical and professional... not! (Hande Erçel is a gorgeous human, and the dress looks good on her, don’t get me wrong. BUT THIS IS SITUATIONALLY INCORRECT ATTIRE). Also him just folding his vest and then social distancing from it... K? 😂
Eda panics and doesn’t want Serkan to see her and runs away back to her seat pod thing - Serkan takes issue with his fruit salad for ~plot reasons~ (EDIT: I’ve been informed that it’s because there was a strawberry in his fruit salad and since he’s allergic, of course it needed to be fixed. Why doesn’t the plane have a note of that??) and comes back to find this mystery flight attendant.
Eda is very stressed out about this encounter and is also starting to have a panic attack because, surprise, she’s also claustrophobic.
After Serkan calms her down, they have a cute/civil conversation for the rest of the flight.
When they land, Eda realizes they’re on an island 2h45min away from Istanbul and she isn’t sure what to do with herself (How did she not already know where they were going, as the FLIGHT ATTENDANT??? So may red flags with this private jet company).
Serkan convinces Eda to come with him and she can hang out at the beach while he’s at Selin’s engagement party.
At the engagement party we finally meet Selin’s fiancé Ferit. He’s sweet and non-threatening and clearly insecure about Serkan being Selin’s ex.
This dress/skirt outfit Selin is wearing isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t scream rich socialite to me. Anything with feathers seems... a bit tacky/too showy? Like someone pretending to be rich? Idk, this outfit isn’t one I’m going to really take a stand on.
Does this engagement party warrant being a 2h45 min flight away? No. They try to explain it away as the couple wanting to have something small and private, even though they also invite the press?? But okay whatever, as long as Serkan and Eda cross paths again, I suppose.
Kaan Karadağ has been mentioned a couple times in passing, but now we finally meet our “villain.” Ferit’s friend, and Serkan & Selin’s childhood acquaintance, who has it out for Serkan bc he somehow bankrupted Kaan’s dad? Idk and I don’t really care but tl;dr they’re enemies.
Another thing I love about Turkish dramas is the censoring. Like, they’ll allow alcohol to be on screen, but they won’t say the word and they’ll just blur out the bottle and any liquid that we’d assume is alcoholic 😂
In the evening, Serkan is tired and wants to leave and Ferit snidely jokes about how Serkan is too picky to have a fiancé of his own. Serkan flashes back to 1 entire day ago when he and Eda pretended to be dating at his business meeting, and says that actually he is engaged to someone and then peaces out.
Serkan finds Eda on the beach, and they are preparing to leave when a crowd of people (Selin, Ferit, and Kaan mainly), arrive to get a peek at Serkan’s new “fiancé.” Eda very reluctantly plays along (good thing she has that unnecessarily sexy “work” dress to help her look the part) and Serkan notices that for the first time ever, Selin is jealous of another woman. #drama
After they finally escape the crowd, Serkan makes an annoyed Eda an offer: Pretend to be his fiancé for the 2 months leading up to Selin’s wedding so he can get them to break up and prevent Ferit marrying into the company. In return, he will pay all the fees to help her complete her last year of studies in Italy.
Eda refuses, stating that she doesn’t want anything from him, and besides she has a boyfriend (Sure Jan; Cenk is such a joke). They have it out and then fly back to Istanbul. But of course the gossips at the engagement have spread the news of Serkan’s new woman so the paparazzi corner them at the airport when they land.
So glad that we got to see this random mechanic find out the news (???)
They escape the cameras and Serkan takes her home, saying that Art Life has a press conference tomorrow, and she should come so he can save face and tell everyone that she was his assistant accompanying him for work to the party. Eda agrees.
It should also be mentioned that Serkan still doesn’t know her name at this point?? She refused to tell him and Engin still hasn’t sent him the names of the scholarship candidates so it’s a bit miraculous that their relationship was at all believable.
The next day, Cenk wants to meet but Eda has to go to the press conference. The girls come too for whatever reason, and Melo is convinced that Cenk wants to propose. Eda just lets that fantasy take hold (why tho?), and Cenk shows up unexpectedly right before the press conference and takes Eda into the nearby hotel’s cafe so they can talk.
Eda seems ready for a proposal (they haven’t seen each other or really communicated in months??) but Cenk wants to break up. Eda is shocked (???) but then Cenk mentions that he has a new girlfriend from Italy that he adores, and oh by the way, it’s the creepy girl from the other night who also happens to be here right now?
Okay fine, I guess??? Cenk: “She’s doesn’t speak Turkish” Girlfriend: *clearly a Turkish actress*
Eda is upset that he brought his jealous girlfriend with him to break up with her and says something about how actually, she’s seeing Serkan Bolat now (maybe it’s just me being someone who doesn’t follow tabloids, but are business people really that popular in every day society where everyone knows who they are?). Cenk laughs at Eda, saying that everyone wants to be with Serkan Bolat, and that she’s bluffing.
Eda makes an impulsive decision, and walks away, over to where Serkan has started the press conference. And seals their fate as fake dating in the public eye.
Queue confetti. No really.
And there we have it. That’s the episode!
In all seriousness, it’s a pretty great pilot, especially for a romcom. It hits all the right beats, includes enough tropes, and tells us a lot about what we should expect in the episodes going forward. And no matter how much I make fun of it, I really do enjoy this show! It’s been such a nice distraction from Current Events. I’ve spent a lot of time watching these episodes just saying “oh my god” out loud to myself as I watch all of the cute/romantic gestures that give me a lot of second hand embarrassment (I forget that PDA makes me kinda uncomfortable 😂).
There wasn’t actually that much terrible fashion in this episode, which I didn’t notice until my rewatch. If I continue with this series of posts, I’m hoping they’ll end up being less plot-centric, and more about the situationally inappropriate outfits and strange subtitling choices.
See you next time?

ANGST KAZUMAJI ANON AND WOOF. FUCK. GOTTA LISTEN TO THOSE SONGS AFTER WORK. EXCITED. Your idea though OW. I haven't seen Y6 yet (I watch playthroughs don't have the console and my computer laughs at me trying to run the games) the streamer thats playing it finally got to Y6 and I am Refusing To Watch It. My heart can't take even starting the VOD.
You’re welcome for the music cc:
A LOT of people haven’t seen 6 yet, so I did my best to get through that without spoilers ^^; Hope I haven’t ruined anything for you. And I feel that, my laptop and I have constant arguments and I’m not a good gamer anyway ^^; I should try Kiwami 1 someday though... I have it, I'm just Nervous about Being Bad ^^;
Nice, following one streamer, well done c: I just hopped around to different playthroughs on youtube ^^; My wife and I binged all 7 games in I think 2 months, max. ^^; She crazy tho and a bad influence on me xp She likes to just sit and binge things and I am, understandably, weak for my wife <3
6 isn’t so bad, I promise. You can do it c: It’s very pretty, you get to stare at Kiryu’s juicy ass the entire game, there’s lots of cute minigames of Kiryu with a baby, uh... *running out of nice things to say about 6* ...did I mention it’s very pretty? Fuck... Listen, I have... Feelings about game 6, but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone ^^; Everyone’s allowed to experience things in their own time and form their own opinions and I don’t want to deprive anyone of that. Please watch it and when you see it, feel free to come tell me about it c:
And as a reward for all that, another angsty idea:
The Nishikiyama Opera!
So I composed the entire thing on a car ride with my wife last week and it’s WILD. Y’all ever see opera? If you’ve never seen an opera you SHOULD, they’re fucking Great. Operas are all about being The Most, comedy or tragedy, they’re all horny as shit and everyone is extra as fuck. If you living for the drama, you HAVE to get your ass to an opera. I’m lucky enough to live somewhere with a relatively robust opera community. And anyway, my point is, The Nishikiyama story? RIPE for an opera adaptation!
First, you gotta know some of the opera tropes. There are two categories of opera, comedies which are kinda rare and tragedies which is... constantly. And operas are pretty good at telling you almost immediately which one they will be. There’s also a lot of meta about the voice parts themselves:
Soprano - heroine, ingenue, beautiful. Will win if this is a comedy, will die if this is a tragedy.
Alto - mothers & witches. Not the heroine. Will probably die regardless of comedy or tragedy. Unless she’s the villain, then she lives in a tragedy.
Tenor - hero. Given the sexiest parts to sing. Sometimes unbearable. Everything is about Him.
Baritone/Bass - fathers & villains. Gorgeous voice, never utilized properly.
Knowing the vocal parts and what they classically represent is key to knowing who will win and who will die in the opera. For example, in Carmen, Carmen is actually an alto, not a soprano, and Don Jose is a tenor. This immediately tells you that shit’s fucked. Tenors are supposed to fall in love with sopranos, never altos. So this story can only end in tragedy because he’s interested in the wrong kind of voice part. There’s even a counterpoint of a soprano who is madly in love with him, and the baritone toreador for Carmen. They’re given their proper voice partners, but Don Jose still pursues Carmen which is a ginormous mistake by operatic tropes.
So, opera education over, picture this:
ACT I Kiryu (soprano) is the loveliest yakuza in all the land! He’s just delightful. The Chorus sings his praises and he demonstrates his impeccable fighting ability. (Forgot to mention, any opera worth its salt has a Chorus and I will die on this hill.) The Audience is assured of his might and grace.
Kiryu, obviously, does not want for admirers, but has not chosen to court anyone formally.
Here enters Kiryu’s brother, Nishiki (bass). The Chorus explains that Nishiki is second to his brother in strength, but is formidable in his own right. Nishiki explains to the audience how he longs for Kiryu, how he covets him, his strength, his beauty. How after a lifetime together, affection has turned to love. Nishiki must have him.
Kiryu hears none of this. Nishiki approaches to make his case when Majima (tenor) sweeps onto the scene. Majima is brazen and glib. The Chorus tells us to beware his charming smile, he is as dangerous as he is flirtatious. Majima has heard of Kiryu’s reputation and calls him into the street to defend his title. Kiryu responds and they do battle.
In the midst of the battle, Majima finds himself won over by Kiryu’s skill and grace, his kindness and strength. Majima is bursting with love and there and then makes a proposal to Kiryu, offering his whole heart.
Kiryu is stunned. Majima is not a weak fighter, he is not a braggadocio, despite appearances. He was a real challenge and Kiryu was not expecting the fight to take this turn. He is so surprised he cannot make an answer and politely, but quickly, leaves.
Nishiki has been watching the entire time and finds his heart gripped by jealousy. He plots to claim Kiryu for himself and hates Majima bitterly, despite the fact that Kiryu has given no answer. Nishiki believes he knows his brother too well not to know that Kiryu returns his affections even if he won’t say. Nishiki leaves, concocting a plan.
We find Kiryu at his balcony, lamenting his situation. Majima may have been exciting, but Kiryu’s no fool. He has no proof that Majima’s feelings will not waver in time. Majima steals into the garden beneath Kiryu’s balcony and professes his love once more.
Kiryu is startled and makes to flee, but Majima sings so sweetly, entreats so gently, that Kiryu is compelled to stay. Majima doesn’t even ask again, just sings of his feelings. Kiryu, in his heart, is wooed by this. He may have been ready to answer when Nishiki interrupts. Majima quickly hides in the foliage.
Nishiki counters with his own confession, his own proposal. Kiryu is shocked and saddened. He begins to sadly tell his brother that he cannot accept. Nishiki flies into a rage, demanding if there is someone else, someone else Kiryu prefers. Kiryu hesitates, but answers honestly that he has always seen Nishiki as a brother, regardless of any other feelings. He cannot accept Nishiki on the grounds of their previous relationship.
Nishiki was expecting this. He reveals a vial of poison and threatens to drink it unless Kiryu will marry him. Majima gasps. Kiryu pleads with Nishiki not to be rash, but Nishiki only demands his answer, the vial nearly at his lips.
Kiryu swallows back tears and collapses to his knees. Sorrowfully, he agrees, unable to bear the responsibility of his brother’s death, and the act finishes to the sound of clamoring wedding bells.
ACT II The lights come up on Kiryu and Nishiki in their home. Nishiki is pacing the floor and making increasingly outlandish suggestions for things to do. Kiryu says yes to all of them, gently and politely. Nishiki’s frustration and annoyance increases with every yes. Eventually he snaps at Kiryu, demanding why he won’t fight him, demanding why he will give no more reaction than a placid yes. Kiryu shrugs helplessly and tries to soothe his brother, but Nishiki won’t be soothed.
They have been married less than a year and it has been like this the entire time, getting worse by the day. Nishiki can see the pain he’s causing his brother, but can’t stop himself. He loves him too greedily to stop. He departs, hoping to take his mind off things.
Kiryu is left alone in the house and sings a longer, sadder version of his lament from the balcony. Distantly, we hear strains of Majima’s love song, now broken and echoing.
The scene changes and we see Kiryu sat down in a busy cafe. At first we assume he’s alone, but people move and we can see he is sitting across from Majima. They do not touch. Their careful, polite space around each other is conspicuous.
Kiryu is tired, he looks wan, almost sick. Majima sings heartbrokenly, telling Kiryu he needs to take care of himself. He is desperate to take Kiryu away from all this, and asks several times, but Kiryu always sighs and shakes his head no. Majima knows Kiryu will not break his word once given, he is too good and honorable for that. But he cannot help singing for him all the same. He cannot touch, he will not permit himself to touch, but he can sing.
Kiryu eventually cannot take the heartache anymore and departs sorrowfully. Majima looks after him, just as sad. Nishiki is revealed to have been spying on them the entire time. He confronts Majima, furious and accusatory. He insists that he and Kiryu have been having an affair. Majima simply looks at him and shrugs. Nishiki screams for Majima to admit it, to admit that Kiryu loves him, has always loved him, this whole time. Majima only says that Nishiki knows Kiryu best. He will not confirm or deny anything Nishiki says. Shaken and stymied, Nishiki flees.
We return to Kiryu’s balcony, where he sits, silent and pale. Nishiki storms in and begins to berate Kiryu with his accusations. He is half-mad now, not seeming to hear Kiryu’s denials. Kiryu professes over and over that only Nishiki is his husband, that he loves only Nishiki. Nishiki cannot accept this as true. Nishiki screams that Kiryu ought to ask him for a divorce. Kiryu cannot claim to want a divorce. He gave his word. Nishiki reveals that he had been watching them in the cafe, that he knows all, the secret contents of Kiryu’s heart. Kiryu manages some resistance at last and asks Nishiki for proof. What proof of his indiscretions? What proof of adultery? What has Kiryu done that has angered his husband-brother so?
Nishiki has none. Kiryu has not done anything wrong, not in word, not in act. Whatever thoughts he might accuse Kiryu of having are ephemeral and will never be real. Still... Nishiki saw how they looked together and his heart was sore. He knows he has stolen Kiryu from what was rightfully his. Moved to regret, Nishiki withdraws the vial of poison again.
Kiryu gasps and tries to prevent his brother.
Nishiki swallows the poison quickly, insisting this will set things right, this will free his brother. He says he did it for love. He falls.
Kiryu collapses next to him, sobbing.
The final scene is Nishiki’s funeral. Kiryu kneels next to his brother’s grave, all in black. He sings of his regrets, of his sorrow. Majima stands close by, but still not touching. He does not look at the grave, only at Kiryu. His broken love song is the last thing we hear.
The End.
...this opera was a tragedy ^^;

Upcoming Movies in October 2020: Theaters, Streaming and VOD
https://ift.tt/3lducG3
October looks a lot different than it did only a few weeks ago. As the month many movie theater owners were hanging their hats on with the hope of a weekly deluge of new movies , October has recently been vacated by high profile features that include Wonder Woman 1984, Death on the Nile, and Candyman.
Yet if you’re a cinephile or movie lover who is desperate for new stories and visions, it is not all doom and gloom. Between the streaming market of Netflix, VOD, and other platforms, as well as some smaller films willing to roll the dice on a limited theatrical release, there are still more than a few things to see in October 2020…
2067
October 2 (U.S. Only)
A high-concept science fiction setup if we’ve ever heard one, 2067 is the story of Ethan Whyte (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a young man born in a dystopian future where he learns that he might be the savior of humanity… at least that’s what people from an even more distant future are saying. In a plot twist that sounds, at least on paper, akin to a reversal of The Terminator, messengers from the future say Ethan is the key to saving the world and wish to transport him via time machine to an unknowable destiny. Chaos ensues. It’s a big idea, but we’re always game for someone swinging big in this genre.
Death of Me
October 2 (November 23 in the UK)
Darren Lynn Boseman, director of Saw II through Saw IV, returns to the horror genre again alongside Nikita’s Maggie Q and Westworld’s Luke Hemsworth. In this VOD release, the pair play a vacationing couple who wake up on an island with a horrible hangover. Yet a video on their phones seems to suggest the night before was even worse: Neil (Hemsworth) spent the evening brutally murdering his wife, as per the screen in their pockets. Nevertheless, here they are now, left with a lot of questions of what happened yesterday… and what can happen today.
Black Box
October 6
The first of Amazon Prime and Blumhouse Productions’ “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour’s Black Box has a tantalizing premise. Nolan (Mamoudou Athie) survived a car accident that took his wife, but it also took large swaths of his memory of her. So in order to regain his memory, and regain a sense of stability for his young daughter, Nolan undergoes an experimental treatment where his psychologist uses hypnosis to thrust him into his subconscious where he’ll be able remember his past and face his personal demons. Literally.
Like something out of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, this horror movie shows how scary being trapped in dreams really is if all that’s in them is the stuff of nightmares…
The Lie
October 6
The second Amazon/Blumhouse feature is more of a psychological thriller than a straightforward horror movie. Originally premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, The Lie follows a father (Peter Sarsgaard) who discovers his daughter Kayla (Joey King) accidentally killed her friend… until she admits she may have actually murdered her.
How far will he go to cover-up his daughter’s sins? Well, that’s the logline, and it seems to be a gripping one, albeit reviews from TIFF were less than kind two years ago.
Hubie Halloween
October 7
Last year Adam Sandler warned the Academy that if he doesn’t win an Oscar for Uncut Gems he’d make a film so bad that it’d make “you all pay.” Well, he wasn’t even nominated and eight months after the ceremony, here we are with Netflix’s Hubie Halloween. It remains to be seen whether this is actually the bad one—for starters it filmed before Oscar nominations went out—but it is still very much a Happy Madison production, complete with major supporting roles for Kevin James and Rob Schneider.

Horror Movies on HBO Max: Hammer Films, It Chapter 2, Us, to Arrive in October
By Don Kaye
In the movie, Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, the town loser of Salem, Massachusetts. A lonely fry cook obsessed with Halloween, Hubie spends all year looking forward to decking out his home and town the same way Clark Griswold anticipates Christmas. But on this particular Halloween, the town appears besieged by actual supernatural forces, and finally Hubie will have his time to shine. Eh, it looks more amusing than The Do-Over and The Ridiculous 6?
Books of Blood
October 7 (U.S. Only)
Who doesn’t love anthological horror? Hulu certainly does, as they’re releasing Books of Blood, the latest adaptation of Clive Barker’s multi-volume series of short stories by the same name. Previous tales from Books of Blood have been adapted into movies as beloved as Candyman and as decidedly not as Rawhide Rex. In this film version, three stories are created for the screen by co-writer and director Brannon Braga. Here’s hoping it lands closer to the former?
Saint Maud
October 9 (UK Only)
The UK will be the first to get A24’s only horror movie this year. Lucky. The feature directorial debut of Rose Glass, Saint Maud follows an unhealthily repressed and zealous young woman: Maud (Morfydd Clark). Maud is technically a caretaker by trade, looking after people in hospice. But she also imagines herself to be something of an apostle, sent to save godless folks from their sins, particularly Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), the woman she’s living with as the in-home nurse.

It’s already a tense situation, even before Maud starts hearing voices and having images of ecstasy and Heaven, and demons and Hell. Rich with atmosphere and grueling anticipation of something horrible happening, Saint Maud is a great debut for Glass and a potential star-maker for Clark, who is skin-crawlingly pious as Maud, the young woman who’s wound up tighter than a jack-in-the-box.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow
October 9 (U.S. Only)
Debuting in theaters and on VOD, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is Jim Cummings’ follow-up to Thunder Road. That earlier, underrated movie was a delightful mix of comedy and drama that won the SXSW Grand Jury Prize. So the sophomore effort being a werewolf comedy-horror movie is intriguing. Indeed, Wolf of Snow Hollow is the rare lycanthrope yarn that’s told from the point-of-view of the would-be wolf hunter, Sheriff John Marshall (Cummings).
Following a series of grisly murders every full moon, the residents of Snow Hollow become convinced they have a wolfman on their hands, even if the frustrated sheriff refuses to accept the obvious. The film also marks the final performance of Robert Forster as John’s crusty mentor.
The War with Grandpa
October 9 in the U.S. (October 16 in the UK)
For most people, having Robert De Niro as a grandfather can be an imposing experience. But kids these days! That’s at least one amusing takeaway from The War with Grandpa, the delayed family movie that sees De Niro’s grandfatherly Ed enter into a prank war with his grandson Peter (Oakes Fegley) after upsetting the youth by moving into his old bedroom—Peter’s mom and Ed’s daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) forced them into the arrangement.

Nocturne
October 13
The first of Amazon and Blumhouse’s next batch of original movies, Nocturne is the tale of a hellish rivalry between sisters. Genuinely. The feature debut from director Zu Quirke stars Sydney Sweeney as Juliet, the younger sister of fellow musician Vivian (Madison Iseman). While both young women are gifted pianists, Vivian is a prodigy and the center of Juliet’s envy. That is until Juliet finds the diary of another child prodigy at their prestigious conservatory who killed herself. The book includes all the late pianist’s hidden compositions… and symbols and incantations.
Ever heard the story of Faust? It seems like Juliet is about to get an up-close modern example.
Evil Eye
October 13
As the final Blumhouse effort to be released on Amazon Prime in 2020, Evil Eye hails from directors Elan and Rajeev Dassani and presents itself as both a psychological thriller and supernatural chiller. The truth of which it really is depends on how much you believe the eye of Usha (Sarita Choudhury).

The Trial of the Chicago 7
October 16
“The whole world is watching.” That’s the chanted refrain of protestors in Aaron Sorkin’s second movie as director, but it might also apply to the level of anticipation regarding this major Netflix release and potential awards season darling. The movie itself is an old-fashioned legal thriller like Sorkin cut his teeth on with scripts like A Few Good Men, but Chicago 7 feels urgently (and depressingly) vital.
Following on the heels of the Chicago riots during the Democratic National Convention of 1968—riots later deemed to have been started by the police—eight men categorized as “the far left” are rounded up for a show trial by Nixon’s Justice Department where they’re charged with conspiracy.

Quentin Tarantino Calls The Social Network the Best Movie of the 2010s

The film features the same blistering abundance of dialogue Sorkin has become famous for, as well as his penchant for breezy fast-paced editing. But the political heft of the subject matter and the movie’s deep bench of an acting ensemble that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Rylance, and Frank Langella is what makes this one of the most thrilling movies of the year.
Honest Thief
October 16 (U.S. Only)
Liam Neeson plays a thief who wants a second chance. A bank robber willing to turn himself and $9 million in to be with the new love of his life. But then crooked FBI agents (Jai Courtney and Anthony Ramos) steal his money and frame him for murder instead. So he’s left with one thing to do: menacingly hiss over the phone, “I’m coming for you.” We imagine that trailer-ready threat was what Honest Thief was sold on during its elevator pitch.
Rebecca
October 21
Remaking Alfred Hitchcock remains a tricky proposition that has thwarted many filmmakers in the past. Readapting the only one of his movies to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Rebecca, appears all the harder. Yet everything we’ve seen from Ben Wheatley and Netflix’s luscious adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel is highly encouraging.
With a winning cast that includes Lily James as the new Mrs. de Winter, Armie Hammer as her husband Maxim, and Kristin Scott Thomas as his menacing housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, the film opens with the young bride trying to step into the shoes of Maxim’s dead first wife, Rebecca. An apparent light of his mansion that has been long snuffed, Rebecca’s flame burns still if only because of Mrs. Danvers’ admiration for her late mistress… and maybe the ghost who prowls the house. This is archetypal Gothic horror, and with screenwriter Jane Goldman apparently keeping the novel’s original ending, we already feel seduced by the imagery.
On the Rocks
October 2 in the UK (October 23 in the U.S.)
Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray work together again. For the first time since their luminous Lost in Translation (if you ignore the ill-considered A Very Murray Christmas), the director and star are collaborating on this visibly intimate tale. It’s about an adult daughter (Rashida Jones) and her famous father (Murray) spending a weekend in New York City on an adventure after years of estrangement.

The film, which also stars Marlon Wayans, premiered to a largely warm reception at the New York Film Festival and is already being written about as a spiritual successor to their original collaboration. Once more a woman in the midst of an existential crisis is aided by Murray between glasses of scotch. Who doesn’t want to pull up a seat and order another round?
Over the Moon
October 23
You probably don’t know Glen Keane’s name but you should. The longtime Walt Disney Animation Studios animator oversaw the design and animation of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin in Aladdin, and Rapunzel in Tangled. With Over the Moon, he steps away from the Mouse and toward Netflix as a first-time co-director, alongside John Kahrs (an animator on Tangled and Frozen).
The trailer for the film is like a Georges Méliès fever dream from as a little girl named Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) builds a rocket ship to take her to the moon. But once there, Fei Fei and friends meet a mythical moon goddess (Hamilton’s Phillipa Soo) who takes them on a candy-colored odyssey through the cosmos.
Synchronic
October 23 (U.S. only)
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are two of the most intriguing new voices in science fiction. If you don’t recognize their names, go watch The Endless right now. One of the strangest and cleverest sci-fi yarns of the last decade, that film is now being followed up by Synchronic, another original tale that stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. The specifics of the film remain vague other than it is about two New Orleans paramedics who investigate a series of murders caused by a new, bizarre designer drug. But we already know we can’t wait to watch what horrible side effects come from these poor bastards taking it.
The Craft: Legacy
It cannot be Halloween without at least one more horror movie coming out the week of. Thus enters The Craft: Legacy, Sony Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ legacy sequel to the original 1996 The Craft. Like its predecessor, this follows an outsider who is the new girl in school (Cailee Spaeny). She may be ostracized by the popular kids, but she befriends fellow students who have alternative tastes… like witchcraft.
The original is a touchstone for millennials and Gen-Xers of a certain age, and this reboot looks to push the story into a more complex understanding of friendship. And if it doesn’t, it’s still a Blumhouse effort so it should have plenty of spooky jumps!
Relic
October 30 (US Only)
Dementia is at the heart of this very eerie chiller where three generations of women convene in an old family home which seems to be rotting from the inside. Robyn Nevin, Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote star in a slow build drama which delves into the horror of losing your sense of self, as Nevin’s matriarch goes missing for days and can’t remember what happened while her house is filled with odd notes, black mould and snippets of a life slipping away from her grasp. This is the feature debut of Australian-Japanese director Natalie Erika James and it’s a stylish, chilling and confident first feature with a final act that veers into full blown horror. Out already in the States on VOD it has a UK theatrical release in the UK.

They also emphasize that they could reduce the capacity at any point if they find it too difficult to manage. They also set up dedicated rules within hot spots such as the restrooms, visitors center, and trading points. They will still enforce all the rules, from social distancing to nose masks. While they keep increasing their capacity, the theater remains clear that they will work in line with the pandemic conditions in the state. Yet again, at the start of June, the Thatcher announced that they are increasing their capacity and accepting well over 10,000 people from the 21st of June. This was primarily because the theater announced an expansion in its controlled capacity for fans. In May, the forecast was to increase by over 3500 people. The rough estimate for the arriving crowd was set at 2500. In April alone, surrounding hotels saw a massive swamp of visitors and fanatics. In May, however, they opened their doors to more people. This meant that several people were not allowed to enter the theater.

Ninjago: Rewind King of Shadows
King of Shadows opens with the Ninja on a boat sailing through glacial water, Jay is annoying Cole by trying to get him to play I spy when Cole is trying to steer the ship….When did he learn how to do that? Kai then makes a very good point after Cole has a minor crash, Wu knows the way to the weapons and probably given he put it there knows how to steer a boat, why the hell ISN’T he steering?!
Zane gives a non answer to the question and Wu decides to ready our Chekhov’s gun for the episode. When all four of the Ninja’s elements are combined it allows them to us the Tornado of Creation to create something from nothing. We will later see that Wu is talking out his ass as the Tornado of creation doesn’t actually work like that.
Kai to show off mimics the moves Wu does even after Wu warns him that if you do the Tornado wrong then there will be disastrous consequences. Cole then crashes the ship as Kai finishes making him think it was his fault. The group disembarks onto an island seemingly made of ice, the group walks through ice blocks with skeletons inside….and it’s never made clear if their Skulkin or normal people who the Ice Dragon froze to death….
Anyway we get a way to quick for it’s own good series of cuts. They see the Shuriken of Ice hanging from the ceiling with the dormant dragon, Zane is lifted by the others to get them only to get frozen, the dragon wakes up and starts chasing them. The Ninja run out carrying Zane letting the Ice dragon get stuck in the narrow opening and they ride down the mountain on Zane crashing into a wall thankfully letting Zane out.
I get that at this point they were probably pressed for time as it seems they might have had bigger plans with how detailed the Ice Dragon’s island was. Maybe the Pilot was meant to be three episodes but got cut to two, it explains why the Lightning Dragon’s section is so fast to.
And I mean it’s fast I think combined the Ice and Lightning Dragon’s sections clock in at a minute tops. We cut to the Ninja on a mountain, Skulkin are after them, they climb up a giant chain to a platform at the top while a lightning storm rages around them. Jay reaches the top and grabs the Nunchucks of Lightning, the Lightning Dragon literally teleports in, looks angry and the Ninja jump activating gliders. What really gets me is unlike the Earth and Ice the Lightning Dragon isn’t trapped anywhere, it was free to fly after them and get the Nunchucks back, it just decided to be lazy that day I guess.
The Ninja land in a forest and we cut to later that night with the team bonding with music and dancing, and Zane cracking his first joke! We transition later into the night (I swear to god my fingers keep typing Ninja whenever I try to write night) with the Ninja asleep only for Kai to be awoken by what sounds like Nya calling his name. ‘Nya’ runs and Kai gives chase wanting to know how his sister got free and finally reunite with her.
‘Nya’ leads him into the Temple of Fire appearing in front of the Sword of Flames, Kai is initially relieved until ‘Nya’ changes revealing itself to be an illusion created by Garmadon. Garmadon taunts Kai making him realize he left his sword behind but Kai remains confident that as a shadow trapped in the Underworld Garmadon can’t hurt him. Garmadon then reveals he has Nya chained up over the lava and that as he left his sword Kai’s only option to save her is to use the Sword of Flames to cut her down.
Garmadon drops Nya and Kai pulls of a pretty cool mid air roll grabbing the Sword and performing Spinjizu to grab Nya and throw the pair of them to safety. Garmadon uses his powers to manifest Kai’s shadow as a solid being, Kai tries to fight it but his strikes just pass through the shadow while the shadows knocks back and hurts Kai. Nya points out this isn’t a fair fight, annnnnd Garmadon creates copies of the shadow and taunts her. He’s a dark lord sweetie they don’t play fair.
Wu then makes the save standing where his shadow is projected among the Kai shadows and using that to fight them off before using a shadow puppet of a bird to scare the rest off. He manages to grab the Sword and Garmadon blocks off the exit with his shadow pointing out that Wu’s focused on keeping Kai safe while leaving the others alone and asleep in the forest….Why didn’t Wu wake them up and tell them ‘Kai’s being an idiot I’m gonna go save him you three stay on your guard’.
I’m just saying it would have saved them from getting tied up in their sleep by the Skulkin and the other three weapons stolen. Wu upon this realization tries to escape with Kai and Nya but Garmadon wakes up the Fire Dragon who is pretty bad at his job if he’s only just now realized there are people in his temple who are taking the one thing he was told to protect. He cuts off the exit leaving them trapped and Wu decides that his only option is to go to the underworld through the Fire Temple with the Sword to keep all four weapons apart.
….
Uhrm….Garmadon is IN the Underworld, and the Skulkin are established as being able to travel to and from the Underworld….How is taking the Sword of Fire to the Underworld in anyway keeping it away from Garmadon who again IS IN THE UNDERWORLD?! I know he’s in a bind but it doesn’t make a lot of sense….Also why is the Fire Dragon attacking him? He PUT IT THERE in the first place! He should be able to tell the Dragon “Chill out it’s just me I need the Sword back”. Wu enters the Underworld and Kai has a dramatic moment about how it should be him making the sacrifice play. Garmadon leaves to meet Wu head on and while Kai has his drama Nya rightfully points out he should stop worrying about Wu and more about the fact the pair of them are trapped in a temple with an angry dragon.
We cut to the Skulkin preparing to go to the Fire Temple only for Garmadon to appear to them and tell them to come back to the Underworld where Wu has brought the weapons. The Skulkin depart Kruncha realizing he’s misplaced his sword but shrugs it off as they depart. Alone Jay reveals he managed to steal said sword….Somehow and cuts the three of them down giving chase after the Skulkin.
Implausibly they manage to catch up with the Skulkin’s speeding vehicles and manage to get onto Samukai’s vehicle knocking off most of the Skulkin. Jay tries to get at the Weapons only to find them locked up and unable to break the lock. Other Skulkin jump on to help fight off the Ninja, Jay tries to tell Cole something only for Cole to hit him in the throat leaving Jay unable to speak properly for a while. Zane gets the jump on a pair of Skulkin only for Samukai to kick him off and leave Zane clinging for his life not wanting to get crushed by the vehicle. Samukai then kicks off his own driver and speeds ahead forcing the Ninja off the vehicle and finally entering the underworld leaving the Ninja beaten and disheartened.
We cut to Wu waking up in the Underworld, he wraps up the Sword to help keep it hidden and starts to explore keeping out of sight of the Skulkin. Hopefully looking for a way out to keep the Sword away from Garmadon. We cut back to the Ninja Cole pounding on the Temple door calling out for Kai and Wu, Zane then informs them that he senses all the weapons are in the Underworld and that he can feel only loss inside the Temple.
...Ok knowing what I know I can believe he can sense the weapons but how the hell is he detecting ‘Loss’ from the temple?
Cole bemoans that mortals like them can’t cross over to the Underworld, only for Kai’s voice to ring out and the temple open up revealing Kai and Nya riding Flame (The fire Dragon….Ya I knew their names the whole time….Actually I think we only get Flame and Rocky’s name mentioned in the show, possibly Wisps to. But Shard I don’t think ever get’s his name said….I will correct myself if I’m proven wrong). Kai and Nya reveals that their parents used to tell them storys about Dragons and that as they are not mortal creatures they can cross over to the underworld….Considering information we’re give in later seasons does this mean Dragons can cross over to other realms to? And if so which realm did they come from?
Cole freaks out and hides as the one thing he apparently fears is Dragons. Zane takes pity on Jay who is trying to speak and acts as his wingman asking Nya if she likes Blue. Kai is unimpressed with the flirting and details that once Flame realized they were trying to protect the sword he became a big softy, Jay and Zane jump on as Kai and Nya have a moment together, Nya swearing to keep a candle lit till Kai comes back and telling him to be careful. Cole on the other hand is hiding and points out there isn’t enough room on Flame for the four of them to travel.
Kai’s solution? Jump cut to them having befriended Shard, Rocky and Wisp and flying through the sky while Cole desperately clings onto his seat scared out of his mind. Also costume change for no reason. Cole nervously questions how exactly Dragons travel to the underworld, and they get their answer the dragons dive bombing and spinning to create a portal then flying through a bunch of crazy caves that are trying to kill them. I kid the animation in this scene and the music is pretty good. And at the end they have a moment of darkness that reminds me of the Between in the DragonRider books.
The Dragons skid to a stop accidentally throwing off the Ninja who rejoice realizing that they survived the trip. We get a full proper look of the Underworld which is a little….underwhelming, just a bunch of rocks floating in a void, not a whole lot to look at or a lot of imagination went into it which is a bit disappointing.
Zane states that he senses Wu inside a palace that is pretty much the only structure in the Underworld. We get a Kruncha and Nuckal comedy bit with them trashing a cart coming into the palace in a Ninja search. It’s a solid plan they know the Ninja are gonna come after the weapons and by the looks of it there is only one entrance to the palace so they’ll have to pass through them to get in.
The Ninja seeing this travel above the Skulkin using stalactites annnnnd end up grabbing onto the legs of giant spiders with only Jay noticing. Jay frantically tries to alert the others while Cole and Kai talk about how great it’s been since Jay lost his voice. Ouch dude your the reason he LOST his voice! Show a little compassion! They finally notice Jay and the spiders and end up falling to the ground, which really should have killed them but cartoon logic *shrug*.
Kruncha has another comedic moment asking what the pluralization of Ninja is before alerting everyone. The Cole invokes Murphy's law inviting the spiders down to join the army of Skulkin looking to kill them….Why were you originally the leader?
We cut to Wu entering the throne room of the Palace and we finally get our first good view of Garmadon. I liked Garmadon’s original design, reminds me vaguely of Skelator only a lot less campy considering you know, his skins been scorched black and his ribs are exposed to the elements. That has got to hurt big time, how has he not broken his ribs several times over the years without his skin and flesh to protect them, or managed to not get an infection considering the underworld can’t be a sanitary place with all the undead wandering around.
Anyway Wu soundly beats a gang of Skulkin that come at him then Samukai enters to fight him with all the other weapons and...Ya it’s pretty good, the animation feels a little slow but that might be because I’m used to the more fast paced fights we get later in the show but it’s still a solid fight.
We cut back to the Ninja surrounded and wondering how their going to win against the stacked odds and we get a pretty weak comedy bit with Jay trying to say ‘Tornado of Creation’ and the others making pretty stupid guesses as to what he’s saying before Jay screams it his voice magically back….I am gonna come back to this.
They debate it for a second before all four of them perform Spinjizu….Why they couldn’t just use their spinjizu to fight them off isn’t mentioned. They merge their elemental tornados and form a golden tornado, said tornado pulls in all the Skulkin, spiders and a bunch of objects around them using said objects to form a ferris wheel contraption that contains the Skulkin within. And here’s my ‘Wu was talking out his ass’ point comes back. He said that the Tornado of Creation creates something from NOTHING, what the Tornado actually does in the show is more like Master Building in the Lego movies, taking objects from around them, breaking them down and remaking them into what you need.
The Ninja hurry into the Palace and enter into the still in progress fight between Wu and Samukai, Kai stops them from interfering saying it’s Wu’s fight and we get them actually using the elemental aspects of the weapons.
Wu launches a fireball, Samukai freezes the Sword of Fire to the ground….I would think the Swords properties would make that impossible but ok. Then uses a lightning bolt to try and fry Wu only for Wu to pull himself and the sword free at the last moment, then the Scythe to split apart the platform they're on before using a final lightning bolt to knock the sword from Wu’s hand winning the battle.
Garmadon commands Samukai to bring him the weapons, and as you would predict Samukai turns on him claiming all four for himself and that he’ll take his throne back from Garmadon. Garmadon laughs and we are informed no being can handle all of their power at once (....Considering what happens in later seasons could a ghost possessing a person use all four weapons as they aren’t one being?) Samukai is disintegrated by the power of the weapons and a portal to another realm where balance of good and evil can be broken is opened up. With a parting villain cliece #784 ‘You were always mom/dads favorite son/daughter’ Garmadon escapes through it.
The Ninja reclaim their weapons and Kai confirms that he’s with the team for the long haul having accepted his destiny as a Ninja. Wu is happy about this claiming that balance has been restored for now. We cut to Nya as the Ninja return with their dragons, there’s a happy reunion and a comedy bit with them blowing themselves up by putting the Weapons together. And we end on a somber but hopeful note as Kai confirms Garmadon will return one day and that they’ll be waiting for him.
So King of Shadows, it was another Ok episode. As I said the part with Shard and Wisp was far too fast paced for it’s own good going by too fast to be processed, the first time I watched it I had no idea what was going on and it’s only by rewatching that I’m able to keep up with it. Like Way of the Ninja it isn’t a stand out episode though some of the animation is nice and shows the quality we’ll get when we get to the seasons proper. It and Way of the Ninja set up a solid enough foundation even if we get information that contradicts some of it later. If I had to pick an overall theme for the pilot it’s…Rough starts. Both for the characters and the show though we’ll soon see how they improve overall
King of Shadows: B-
Pilot overall: C+
And here a little extra bit I hopefully won’t have to do often ‘They wasted a perfectly good plot’ Ya I don’t like that they wasted what could have been a good plot for a character driven episode in the pilot without doing anything with it. What do we get from Cole rendering Jay mute? We get Zane hitting on Nya for him, Cole making a cruel remark at Jay’s expense and a pretty unfunny joke with the Tornado of Creation bit.
What they could have done instead?...Keep it as Cole accidentally hitting Jay in the throat during a fight and him being rendered mute, I have no problems with this. And show us the Ninja caring for one of their own during down time rather than during a high pressure situation like the season finale of Rise of the Spinjizu Master. Give us Cole being a leader and feeling guilty because he’s hurt one of his brothers and trying to care for him. Jay protesting as much as he can and trying to get back in the fight, then realizing how much of a liability he could be being unable to communicate and support the others with his tech knowhow until his voice heals. It’d have been a nice character and bonding episode for the Ninja which I don’t think we get a lot of that aren’t directly tied to moving the plot forward.
Next time on Ninjago: Rewind we meet a new main character and our antagonists for the next two seasons in Rise of the Snakes.

Orson Bean, Free-Spirited Actor of Stage and Screen, Dies at 91
Orson Bean, the free-spirited television, stage and film comedian who stepped out of his storybook life to found a progressive school, move to Australia, give away his possessions and wander around a turbulent America in the 1970s as a late-blooming hippie, died on Friday in Venice, Calif. He was 91.
His death was confirmed by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office on Saturday, which said it was investigating his death as an accidental vehicle accident. Mr. Bean was struck and killed by a car on Friday while crossing the street, Capt. Brian Wendling of the Los Angeles Police Department was quoted as telling reporters.
Early in his career, in the 1950s and ’60s, Mr. Bean, a subtle comic who looked like a naïve farm boy, was ubiquitous on TV, popping up on all the networks as an ad-libbing game-show panelist (a mainstay on “To Tell the Truth”), a frequent guest of Jack Paar and Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show,” a regular in playhouse dramas and, in 1954, the host of his own CBS variety show, “The Blue Angel.”
He also starred on Broadway and Off Broadway, made Hollywood films, founded a society of Laurel and Hardy aficionados, amassed a fortune and was blacklisted briefly as a suspected Communist.
In 1964, captivated by a progressive-education theory, he created a small school in Manhattan, the 15th Street School, that made classes and most rules optional, letting children run, scream and pretty much do as they pleased. For the remainder of the decade, Mr. Bean devoted himself to the school, paying its bills, covering its deficits and working harder and harder.
He often performed in five television panel shows a week, squeezed in nightclub acts and a Broadway show, married a second time and added more children to his growing family. But he felt overwhelmed by the trappings of success and by turmoil in a nation caught up in conflicts over the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the assassinations of leaders and a political drift to the right.
“We were having babies and the money was rolling in so fast we had to push it out,” he recalled in an interview with The New York Times years later. “We had a four-story townhouse and a live-in maid. We loved it, but I was starting to freak out. I became convinced that the country was going fascist.”
Believing America’s generals were planning an imminent coup d’état, Mr. Bean abandoned his thriving career and moved his family to Australia in 1970. He became a disciple of the Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich and wrote a book about his psychosexual theories, “Me and the Orgone.” (The orgone was a pseudoscientific theory about a universal life force.)
When the book appeared in 1971, Mr. Bean returned to America with his wife and four children and for years led a nomadic life as an aging hippie and “househusband,” casting off material possessions in a quest for self-realization.
“We were so sure we didn’t want to be possessed by things and so intent on not having them that we gave away almost everything we owned,” he wrote in a 1977 Op-Ed in The Times. “We entered what I now call our late hippie stage. We tossed the kids into the van, bummed around the country, sponging on our friends and putting the kids in school wherever we happened to light.”
In his dropout years, as he recalled in a memoir, he experimented with psychedelic drugs, communal sex and other excursions into self-discovery. His peripatetic family collected driftwood and books, and at night read aloud to one another. When he had to, Mr. Bean scratched out a living by making commercials and animated film voice-overs.
By 1980, he was bored with inactivity. Moving back into the public spotlight, he reappeared in television movies, soap operas, game shows and episodic series. Over the next three decades, he took recurrent roles in “Murder, She Wrote,” “Normal, Ohio” and “Desperate Housewives.” He also appeared in many movies, including “Being John Malkovich” (1999).
While he eventually performed in some 50 television series and 30 films, he is often remembered for early panel shows, which, in contrast to the culture of greed, noise and kitsch of modern game shows, were low key, relatively witty and sophisticated.
“We were much more intelligent then,” Kitty Carlisle Hart, a frequent panelist with Mr. Bean, told The Times in 1999. “It sounds like an awful thing to say, but it’s true.”
Mr. Bean was born Dallas Frederick Burrows on July 22, 1928, in Burlington, Vt., to George and Marian Pollard Burrows. His father, a founder of the American Civil Liberties Union, was a Harvard campus police officer. His mother, a cousin of President Calvin Coolidge, killed herself when Mr. Bean was a teenager.
Mr. Bean graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 1946, was drafted into the postwar Army and served with occupation forces in Japan. He was an accomplished magician, and after being discharged changed his name to Orson Bean and worked Boston nightclubs with tricks and gags that evolved into comedy routines.
He was blacklisted for attending two Communist Party meetings, but it blew over and hardly slowed his career. Nightclub work in Baltimore and Philadelphia finally landed him in New York at the Blue Angel and the Village Vanguard, where the pantheon included Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl and Woody Allen.
Fame followed him onto the Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen and Merv Griffin shows. He was on “The Tonight Show” so often that he became a vacation substitute for Mr. Paar and Mr. Carson. He appeared on “Playhouse 90,” “Studio One” and other television dramas, and starred on Broadway with Jayne Mansfield in the 1955 comedy “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?” and with Melina Mercouri in the 1967 musical “Ilya Darling.”
Mr. Bean married the actress Jacqueline de Sibour in 1956. They had a daughter, Michele, and were divorced in 1962. He and his second wife, Carolyn Maxwell, were married in 1965, had three children, Max, Susannah and Ezekiel, and were divorced in 1981. He married the actress Alley Mills in 1993, and lived for many years in Venice, Calif. His son-in-law was Andrew Breitbart, the conservative blogger who died in 2011.
Taken with the unorthodox ideas of A.S. Neill’s Summerhill School in England, Mr. Bean, who never got beyond high school, bought a building in Chelsea in 1964, hired four teachers and opened the 15th Street School with 40 pupils in nursery, kindergarten and lower elementary grades. It taught self-reliance by making lessons and most rules optional, hoping to instill responsibility.
In 1964, Mr. Bean also helped found the Sons of the Desert, an international fraternal organization devoted to the films and lives of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Named for the duo’s 1933 movie, it has a Latin motto: “Duae tabulae rasae in quibus nihil scriptum est.” (“Two blank slates on which nothing has been written.”)
Mr. Bean wrote a memoir, “Too Much Is Not Enough” (1988), and a humorous book, “25 Ways to Cook a Mouse for a Gourmet Cat” (1994), which included recipes for Corned Mouse and Cabbage, Burritos con Raton, Mouse Bourguignon and Souris Printemps.
Elian Peltier and Yonette Joseph contributed reporting.

On the reboot, Fallon Carrington () thinks she will be announced as the new COO of her father’s, Blake Carrington (), global energy empire. But much to her horror, Fallon is horrified to learn her promotion is still far away, if not impossible, with the arrival of her stepmother-to-be, Cristal (Nathalie Kelley). MINDHUNTER

Another Marvel series is coming to small screen. Amid the already packed plate of sci-fi shows with FOX’s “” and ABC’s “”, “” on Hulu is looking to attract viewers of a certain range of ages.

CMT President Brian Philips Exits After 16 Years
New Post has been published on http://styleveryday.com/2017/06/29/cmt-president-brian-philips-exits-after-16-years-2/
CMT President Brian Philips Exits After 16 Years
There’s another shakeup at Viacom’s cable portfolio.
CMT president Brian Philips is leaving after 16 years at the network, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Philips announced his departure in an internal memo sent to staff Thursday morning.
Sources note that a new general manager will be named soon, rather than a new president as part of a likely restructuring at the channel.
For CMT, the change in leadership comes in the midst of the channel’s push into original scripted programming. In addition to original comedy Still the King and the period drama Sun Records, the network is also now the home to Nashville after the country music drama was canceled in 2016 at ABC. CMT, along with partner Hulu, recently picked up the Lionsgate series for a sixth season. CMT is up 14 percent year-over-year among adults 18-49.
CMT had recently been in discussions to save another canceled ABC series, the Tim Allen multicam Last Man Standing, but talks broke down over the show’s high price tag.
Philips becomes the latest head of a Viacom cable network to depart. Last year saw music and entertainment group president Doug Herzog — who oversaw MTV, VH1, Logo, Spike and Comedy Central — exit. He was followed by Sean Atkins, opted to step down as MTV’s president a year into his tenure at the network after hearing that VH1 and Logo topper Chris McCarthy would be brought in to help steer the ship. McCarthy became the cabler’s third president in three years. MTV head of originals Michael Klein also stepped down at the music-themed network.
Elsewhere, Nickelodeon president Russell Hicks exited his post following an 18-year run at the kids-focused unit. He was not replaced. Over at Comedy Central, Michele Ganeless passed on renewing her contract and departed as president of the cable network. Her second-in-command, Kent Alterman, was appointed Comedy Central president in May.
Then there’s TV Land, where Larry Jones — who steered the cabler into scripted originals — was pushed out and replaced by his second in command, Keith Cox, who has since been promoted to oversee both TV Land and Paramount Network. The latter, which is being rebranded from Spike TV, saw Cox replace Sharon Levy at the helm of the network. Over at BET, president and head of programming Stephen Hill stepped down.
The shake-up comes as Kevin Kay was recently installed to oversee Paramount Network, TV Land and CMT as Viacom, under new CEO Bob Bakish, plans to focus on six core brands as part of the media conglomerate’s rejuvenation. Those six brands are Paramount Network, Comedy Central, MTV, BET Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.
Read Philips’ memo below:
Today I’m writing to share the news that I’ve decided to step down as President of CMT.
For some time, I’ve been contemplating a change (more on that soon), but agreed to stay to help navigate through the recent exciting “brand renewal”. This was a tough decision; I remain a fan and champion of each of you. I love, live and breathe this brand. Change is difficult, especially after all we’ve endured together! Fortunately, we have the best senior staff team in place in our history, and I am confident they will continue the remarkable work we’ve done together.
I cherish the time I’ve spent here with you over the last 16 years. I joined CMT as an ambitious-but-unenlightened wayward radio character. I had the early good fortune to learn from masters of the medium, the creative firebrands who built the glorious MTV Networks group. Later, learning from Nickelodeon’s geniuses was another invaluable experience. I’m glad I don’t have to list my many brilliant mentors here. They are known to all, of course, their names are legend.
Most of all, I learned so much about TV from you, my awe at your abilities has simply never ceased. We at CMT grew up together and I’m forever changed and made better by each of you. I think of the early days when we worked from a shelled-out Opryland building on a dime-store budget, a small country music video jukebox in a town nobody wanted to visit. Fast forward to today, Nashville is one of the most vibrant cities in the world. CMT has forged its place in this dazzling new environment, all while remaining true to the brand promise.
I leave you as CMT enters what we all believe will be a very strong era. Ratings are up across all dayparts, driving more than 7 months of year-over-year growth. We’ve attracted new fans and advertisers with “Nashville” and successfully converted them to regular CMT viewership. Our creative resurgence continues and the channel looks better than ever! Recent CMT Music Awards and Crossroads have been widely acclaimed as two of the very best we’ve ever done. Our summer line-up of originals is solid, and we’re developing some innovative new series that will ensure our future.
I’ll be sticking around awhile to help with the transition and look forward to personal time with you. I will swing through NY and Hollywood offices to further express my gratitude. Your friendship and kindness mean the world to me, and all of the outrageous fun and laughter we’ve shared will be what I remember most fondly. Keep the faith.
More soon, but I wanted you to hear this first from me. Have a great holiday weekend!
With much love, Brian
