We’re in one of the oldest fandoms where the canon itself is long lost and the source materials for us to draw inspiration from are those of the earliest fanfics themselves—two of which being commonly accepted as beta canon due to their top quality. Sometimes these fanfics contradict each other due to all sorts of OOCs and inconsistencies which is forcing us to choose our own sources to rely on to draw fanart and write fanfics. Each generation of fanfic writers are introducing more headcanons in their works and sometimes their fanfics of fanfics become so popular that they are prompting new sub-fandoms to emerge, inspiring more people to draw fanart and write fanfics for these fanfics of fanfics. It’s almost as if there is a family tree of fanfics and we’re now reaching the third generation and beyond

So often in media, when abuse is talked about, the little boys in the household are shown to be combative - the "protector" of the family (an utterly depraved and insane idea). What makes Simon's younger self portrayal so special to me is that he's none of these things as a child. He was scared, timid, because he was just a kid in a horrifying situation. Being a male should not strip you of the right to involuntary responses that come with being abused.

This is not to say that the former example does not exist in the real world, because it very much does - it's just usually the only example of a young boy in an abusive household. Though the themes itself are not pleasant, I am incredibly happy to see representation of the quote-on-quote "softer" side of men who faced abuse growing up.

Writing has been slow for me lately due to it being school holidays (I have two young kids and I haven’t had much time alone for me to truly sit down and write). But today I did manage to get some stuff written for Rival Firefighters 🚒 so here you go …

They’re still shaking hands and smiling stupidly at each other when the ambulance behind them explodes, a big fiery ball of metal that Buck finally realizes as he turns to watch the flames, he could have been in.

“You guys hungry?” Buck and Bobby turn to Eddie who seems completely unfazed that the ambulance he and Buck had just been in had exploded.

Buck stares in awe at the man and then bursts out laughing, Eddie soon joining in.

Bobby shakes his head and mutters. “Great, now there’s two of them.” He claps his hands together to get their attention. Once they’ve gotten their laughter under control, he pulls out his wallet and holds out a debit card. “Go and grab yourselves some food and then we’ll head back to the station.” He nods over to two food trucks down the street from the empty parking lot they’re currently in.

Eddie looks hesitant to accept the card, but Buck has no qualms and plucks the card out of Bobby’s hand, flashing Eddie a beaming smile. They walk to the trucks and order the greasiest burgers on the menu with extra fries (in case Bobby gets peckish) and step to the side as they wait for their food.

“So …” Eddie licks his lips nervously and Buck finds himself tracking the movement. “Why did you suddenly hate me today?”

Letting out a sigh, Buck leans back against the side of the food truck, enjoying the warmth that the truck is emitting. “I didn’t hate you.” Eddie gives him a deadpan look like he doesn’t believe that for a second. “I didn’t!” Buck insists. “I just strongly disliked you and how easily you fit in here. I already told you that.”

“And now?” Eddie pushes, obviously not satisfied with Buck’s answer.

“Now? Well I think —” Buck pauses for a second so he can find the right words. Eddie however uses it as an opportunity to be an asshole (affectionately).

“Don’t hurt yourself”

“Shut up” Buck laughs, kicking his leg out at Eddie who laughs and dodges it with ease. “I was going to say I think I like you again, but now I’m not so sure.” Before Eddie can retaliate, their order is called and they go to the window to collect it.
