I don't really understand the Olympics qualification....does Spain make it automatically for winning the WC? And what are the chances of the US making it, like 100% or is there a chance they wouldn't?
Olympic qualifying is determined by mini tournaments within the different continental confederations. 11 countries can qualify, the host nation (France) is qualified automatically to make 12 teams in total.
The US already qualified last year by winning the Concacaf championship.
Spain will have to do really well in the nations league (sept 23 - feb 24). They will have to make the final of the nations league finals to qualify unless France makes the final in which case a 3rd place in the nations league finals would also be enough. Only the winners of their group (during the group stage) go through to the nations league finals.
Spain is in a group with Sweden, Italy and Switserland so it will be a tough one but certainly not impossible. If they win the group stage they will have to beat at least one really tough European country to make the final or win the 3rd place match (if France makes the final).
#ask#espwnt#uswnt#euro qualidication is absolutely insane#there are some really tough continental confederation tournaments like the UEFA one then others not so much#Australia and Japan for example shouldn't have an issue#US also has it quite easy with concacaf#CAF i think will be pretty tight

Berhalter hails McKennie's 'professional' performance in USMNT return
Berhalter hails McKennie’s ‘professional’ performance in USMNT return
Gregg Berhalter praised Weston McKennie for a “professional” performance after the U.S. men’s national team midfielder returned to the team in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Jamaica. Led by two goals from Ricardo Pepi, the U.S. took down its CONCACAF opponent in McKennie’s first game back since being dismissed from the team last camp due to a rules violation. All week, Berhalter has said McKennie’s…

In the Asian cup you had to make the top 5, excluding Australia, so all 4 semifinalists qualified, then the 3 other teams other than Australia who lost a quarterfinal had a playoff for the last spot, Vietnam got that spot. Uefa has a long qualifying tournament with all 51 teams, games spread out, so it takes much longer to qualify.
This Concacaf Championship only has 8 teams, and USA and Canada were seeded directly to it. Other teams had a qualifying tournament for it, so pre-qualifiers before the actual Championship/qualifiers. So 24 of 32 teams who compete for 4 world cup spots are already knocked out. They do it that way to avoid having games where the US and Canada (and some of the other better teams too) play against very low ranked teams and win by 10, 15 goals.
It’s only Uefa doing a special qualification tournament. The other confederations use a Championship, their equivalent to the Euros, to determine qualification for the world cup. Such as the Asian cup, Concacaf championship or the Copa America femenina and the Africa cup of nations, those two are going on right now as well. South America has 3 world cup spots and Africa has 4, plus they’ll each send teams to the intercontinental playoffs, where there is already Thailand and Chinese Taipei (who lost the playoffs for the last spot to Vietnam). Both 3rd place teams in the Concacaf groups will go there as well, plus 1 team from the Uefa qualifiers. There will be 10 teams in that playoff tournament and 3 will get to the world cup.
omg this was such a good explanation thank you so muchh!! i didnt actually know that the euros werent wc qualifiers LOL so that shows how much i know.
are the number of spots for each federation based on population size? or is it something different im curious

How does qualifying for the Olympic from the world cup works?
It's different for different confederations, for example CONCACAF have a qualifying tournament the same as for the World Cup, as do a number of other confederations I think.
For UEFA though it's the top 3 European teams at the World Cup so it all depends on the next few weeks!
I think it's done like this because there's just no time for a qualification tournament for the Olympics for UEFA teams - the Euro 2021 qualifiers start at the end of August, less than 2 months after the WWC final, and go on til October 2020. European qualifiers for both the Euros and World Cup are much tougher than most other confederations because there are so many teams. They have to play each team in their group home and away (each group for the Euros 2021 qualifiers have 5-6 teams) and then depending on if it's the WC or Euros a certain number go through and a few others have to do a playoff tournament, again - home and away.

Rising star Pepi joins regulars Pulisic, McKennie and Dest to headline USMNT World Cup qualifying squad

Poor Canada because they haven't solved their scoring problem. And their defence wasn't enough to keep Mexico from scoring today. The CONCACAF Championship is this summer and will determine qualification for both the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Olympics. Canada should easily qualify for the World Cup, but if they don't solve their scoring issue I can actually see them failing to qualify for the Olympics (only two teams will qualify - the team that wins the championship and then the team that wins an Olympic qualifying match between the teams that end up second and third).
Oh I thought something bad had happening. Yeah, sorry, I don't have much sympathy for that. They got a gold medal without solving their goalscoring problem so they'll be fine. I'll be happy for Mexico if they qualify for the Olympics tbh!
And we're seeing a post-olympic slump for Sweden and the Netherlands too so I wouldn't be that worried about those few friendlies, at least Canada's not risking their WC qualification...

(Us youth nt anon here) I’ll be totally transparent in the fact that i really don’t have too much of an idea of the youth system of the other nations in the concacaf region, but i was going off of things like the U17 failing to qualify for the 2014 u17 world cup, mexico being able to beat the us in the 2018 u20 concacaf championship, and that during the actual world cups, canada and mexico get further than the US. (2018 u17 wc, 2016 u17wc, etc)
that's okay it was more like an open question to anyone who might know more, wasnt trying to just put you on the spot! But yeah going off the results in these past years it really does show the big difference between the senior squad and the youth teams. And as you pointed out with the 2014 failed qualification this isnt just a really recent thing and yet its had very little impact (as of yet at least) on the senior team's performances

The 2026 World Cup is coming to North America – here's all you need to know
June 13, 20187:47AM EDT
The 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA promises to be the biggest World Cup event ever held and it will be the first to feature an expanded 48-team field with a record 80 matches.
The winning bid submitted to FIFA established that Canada and Mexico will each host 10 matches, leaving 60 matches to be staged on US soil, including every match from the quarterfinal stage through to the championship match.
An estimated 5.8 million fans are expected to attend the matches with projected record profits for FIFA of $ 11 billion, funds that will be shared with the 211 FIFA member federations to help develop and expand the sport across the world.
While the three Concacaf neighbors will work to jointly manage preparations for the 2026 World Cup until FIFA sets up its operations to oversee the competition, there’s plenty left to be done in the coming months and years:
When is the World Cup taking place in 2026?
The specific dates will be set by FIFA in the future, including the date for the FIFA World Cup Official Draw which usually takes place the December before the tournament (in this case December 2025).
Which cities will host the World Cup matches?
According to the United Bid, FIFA will decide the host cities in 2020 or 2021. The final list will come from the 23 candidate cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States that were included as part of the bid.
Do Canada, Mexico and the USA automatically qualify?
While host nations have traditionally been granted automatic qualification for the World Cup, the decision to give automatic berths to Canada, Mexico and the USA will be made by the FIFA Council in the future along with details for the rest of the qualifying process in the rest of the world.
