Material Musings - Wax Resist, Tea Dyed Fabric Reveal

In Material Musings I share several projects that use combination of wax resist dyeing, clay baths, and tea solutions! The results were gorgeous, and I show some of the designs that are my favorite.

Sometimes I make things and fully commit to continuing them to the end... almost in spite of the results.

This monstrosity was already so 'extra' before I went and added the cheetah. That's why I added it. I just felt like there was no point trying to tone down this object.

So the aesthetic of this piece is out of character for me. I'd definitely make a face if I saw it for sale somewhere!

It pours excellently and holds a good deal of tea.

Now it just needs an outrageous teacosy.

Once my sister showed me a YouTube channel entirely devoted to holographic nail art. There’s a lot in common with that galaxy of sparkling nail paint and the constellations and surfaces found in some glazes.

This surface is pushing the limits between the speckling glaze and the wax resist design. Some people love it and others would prefer to be in the one space or the other. I like to get to the edge of that space but once the design is obscured to the point where it fails to contribute, or loses its intentionality, I reglaze or throw the piece out.

Ink and wax resist

I wanted to see how using text in the background showing through would work. To do this I used a white crayon to do a wax resist.

I used black drawing ink instead of oil paint as I felt it would help the wax show through however it didn’t and I used the piece to experiment with the ink, dripping it down the paper.

Although I didn’t like the piece, I felt it helped me understand what materials may or may not work for future paintings.

Worked on another sample piece for @getartsynj this evening. The request was to make some wild and colorful utilizing paint splatters. I decided to combine that with a simple wax-resist technique, I can’t wait to see how it comes out. It will be a double fire process since I used crayon on raw bisque for my resist, but that gives me so many options for the hearts!
