Lyle Mays, a jazz keyboardist whose work, chiefly with the Pat Metheny Group, won nearly a dozen Grammy Awards, has died at his home in Los Angeles.

Mays, who died Monday at age 66, had a “long battle with a recurring illness,” Pat Metheny said on his website.

“Lyle was one of the greatest musicians I have ever known,” Metheny wrote. “Across more than 30 years, every moment we shared in music was special. From the first notes we played together, we had an immediate bond. His broad intelligence and musical wisdom informed every aspect of who he was in every way. I will miss him with all my heart.”

“Lyle was a brilliant musician and person, and a genius in every sense of the word,” said a statement from his niece, composer-vocalist Aubrey Johnson. “He was my dear uncle, mentor, and friend and words cannot express the depth of my grief.”

Born in Wausaukee, Wis., on Nov. 27, 1953, Mays grew up in a musical family. His mother and father both played piano and guitar and as a youngster he played organ.

He co-founded the group with guitarist Metheny in the 1970s, where he was a performer, composer and arranger. The group’s endlessly innovative fusion style incorporated such diverse sounds as rock, contemporary jazz and world music.

The group won numerous jazz performance Grammys, and some for best contemporary jazz album, including 2005’s award for “The Way Up.” But the group also scored an award in 1998 for best rock instrumental performance for “The Roots of Coincidence.”

Mays also was a sideman for albums by jazz, rock and pop artists, including Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones and the group Earth, Wind & Fire.

Mays also helped compose soundtrack music for several movies, including 1985’s “The Falcon and the Snowman.”

Mays, who cherished the technical and analytical aspects of his craft as well as the improvisational part, also was a self-taught computer programmer and architect who once designed a house for a relative.

During a recent tour, Metheny said he could tell that Mays had “had enough of hotels, buses and so forth.” The lifestyle of constant touring is challenging and takes a toll on musicians, Metheny said.

“But, no matter what was happening in the day-to-day of it all,” Metheny said, “Lyle always gave it his all on the bandstand.”

NIAGARA, Wis. — It was Senior Night for the Niagara girls volleyball team Tuesday night, and they defeated Marinette-Oconto Conference foe Coleman 3-0(25-17,25-18,25-20) to remain undefeated.

“Tonight’s game started off slow and we didn’t play to our potential. Coleman was an aggressive team and had some really nice defensive saves,” said Lady Badgers head coach Carol St. Arnauld. “The girls rallied towards the end of the first game and stayed in control for the next two sets.”

“It’s good to win every night but especially sweet on Senior Night. We have a special team that is a good blend of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Each player on the team represented their home court well,” St. Arnauld said.

Alyssa Cretton led the team with 14 kills and Bailey Pearson was right behind her with 13. Sophomore Morgan Borchardt ran the offense well with 30 assists while the Badgers’ other sophomore, Abby Wells, led the team in service aces with 3.

The Badgers seniors are Cretton, Julia Brown, Haley Allred and Emmah Maki.

Niagara’s match versus Lena on Thursday has been postponed, with a make-up date to be determined. They return to action Tuesday when they travel to M&O foe Wausaukee.

I think I started listening to LPs of the Paat Metheny Group from the release of their first album in 1976, and continued to get their albums and livd DVDs for decades. Lyle was not an extravagant showman at the keyboards, but made up for it easily with beauty.

The final song in this tribute post is ‘Ozark’ from the amazing 1981 album "As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls” (referencing Wichita, Kansas and Wichita Falls, Texas). Musicians are Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny, and Nana Vasconcelos, the wonderful percussionist from Brazil. It was his playing berimbau on this album that aparked my own interest in learning that instrument.

Lyle Mays, 66, Pat Metheny Group Keyboardist, Is Dead

Lyle David Mays was born on Nov. 27, 1953, in Wausaukee, a village in eastern Wisconsin. His parents encouraged his interest in music and were musically inclined themselves. His father, Cecil, a truck driver, taught himself to play guitar; his mother, Doris (Olson) Mays, who worked in a bank, played piano and organ in a local church.

Mr. Mays himself began playing organ in church at 9 and developed an interest in jazz not long afterward. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, he transferred to North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas), where he played piano in the school’s celebrated One O’Clock Lab Band while composing and arranging its music. He wrote all the compositions and arrangements on the band’s Grammy-nominated album “Lab 75.” He left in 1975 to tour with Woody Herman’s big band.

Mr. Mays met Mr. Metheny in 1974 at the Wichita Jazz Festival in Kansas. They first recorded together in 1977 on Mr. Metheny’s album “Watercolors” and formed the Pat Metheny group shortly afterward. The group’s first album, released the next year, was titled simply “Pat Metheny Group.”

Their other ventures included writing the score for the John Schlesinger spy thriller “The Falcon & the Snowman” (1985), starring Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton. That score included a collaboration with David Bowie, “This Is Not America,” which was a Top 40 hit.

Mr. Mays and Mr. Metheny released one album as co-leaders, the atmospheric and whimsically named “As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls” (1981). Reviewing it for The New York Times, Stephen Holden called it “a winning combination of electronic innovation and neo-Romantic lyricism,” and noted that Mr. Mays “dominates the record.” In a recent Facebook post, the bassist Christian McBride, another longtime Metheny associate, called it “one of the most moving documents of pure beauty ever made.”

Mr. Mays is survived by two sisters, Joan Johnson and Jane Tyler.

Mr. Mays also performed or recorded with Joni Mitchell (on her “Shadows and Light” tour), Bobby McFerrin, Rickie Lee Jones and others. He recorded a few albums as a leader, among them “Fictionary” (1992), a trio recital with Marc Johnson on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, and “Solo: Improvisations for Expanded Piano” (2000).
