Oh, absolutely!
A lot of people think that "leave nature to itself" is the best policy, and while that has its uses (it's leagues better than 'build a Walmart on top of a prairie') but a LOT of North America's ecosystems were fine tuned and optimized by very careful knowledgeable human management
e.g. canebrakes: they thrive on periodic fire that stops an overstory from forming. Arundinaria exists as an understory plant in forests, but it only reaches tiny sizes of like 4-8 feet tall like that (vs. 40+ feet in historic canebrakes).
Every decade (?) or so, Native Americans would burn off the canes above ground, and after the fire passed the underground rhizome system would SHOOT up new canes at a growth rate of 1.5 inches per day. Cane was used as a renewable resource for everything from mats to arrows to waterproof baskets, and the young shoots and seeds were food.
And the cool thing is, this INCREASED biodiversity! Canebrakes were shelter for red wolves and panthers and an unknown wealth of other animals (including passenger pigeons and Carolina parakeets) and some of our rarest plants are found in canebrakes, including Venus flytraps and the Alabama canebrake pitcher plant. Nine lepidopteran species use cane as a host plant. Birds absolutely love the cover it provides. And cane has absolutely incredible properties for filtering sediments and pollution out of runoff, kicking the ass of even a forested buffer zone in that respect.
I'm involved in (coordinating?) a restoration project and I can tell why the Native folks 10k years ago were like "hey let's make baskets outta this stuff" because trying to dig out rhizomes for transplant is like trying to chop into a densely woven mat of bamboo. At the place I work there's a small clump of the stuff on a stream bank and the stream has eroded like 18 inches UNDER the rivercane clump while the shelf of mud over the stream is still solid.
...sorry, off topic, I'm just really passionate about river cane, and part of why it's so rare nowadays is because controlled burns were needed to maintain it.
Food crops are exempt from my stick-to-native-species rule, simply because they feed people (and they also typically have low invasive potential).
As for native species from closely bordering regions, people seldom ever consider those non-native in my experience. And it's not without reason—we straight up don't know what the "original" (pre-colonial) range of some of these species was.
Some examples of what I'm talking about:
Northern Catalpa. This tree had a highly restricted range to our knowledge pre-colonization...except that we found archaeological evidence of some in West Virginia, so who knows.
Black Locust. Big example imo of a tree that is "invasive" because of poor land management practices. This guy springs up readily on highly disturbed sites. Now, I don't recommend it in the West, and I wouldn't say go out of your way to plant one, but I wouldn't get rid of him.
Osage Orange/Bodark: Supposedly only native to a small area of Texas, but thrives virtually everywhere in the USA. Its giant, hard green fruits were, some theorize, eaten by giant ground sloths or mammoths. It obviously isn't just a relic though, as its wood is ideal for making bows and burns hotter than any other wood, making it super useful for humans.
There are also some naturalized species that I consider friends. The biggest example is Dandelion—it aggressively overtakes our most damaged and disturbed environments and leaves alone areas that have been able to heal a bit. It feeds pollinators where otherwise no food would exist and humans can eat it too.
There are many invaluable services that Dandelion performs—its deep taproot delves 20 inches into the most compacted hard clay. Its sprawling leaves gather debris and dirt to start a soil forming. Its prolific, damn near year-round seed production feeds seed-eating fauna.
On the higher levels of understanding, it's about understanding each species individually and what it does. Lots of the common lawn "weeds" are our friends even when non-native, because they don't bother environments in a later stage of healing at all. They're here to build soil, support insects, and destroy lawns. We support them.
I also think invasive species eventually learn to behave as the ecosystem adapts to them. Part of that adaptation can be helped along by humans introducing the hyperspecific parasites of the plant to the new environment.
Purple loosestrife used to be one of our worst invasive species, but nowadays no one talks about it. Why? Partly because of a bug we introduced that eats purple loosestrife and ONLY purple loosestrife. I don't think I've ever even seen purple loosestrife.
So, this is cool:
We need to convince more municipalities to plant more trees. I would suggest looking into trees that are more heat and drought tolerant (oaks, not western red cedar, for an example) & also those that grow more quickly. Planting on the west and south (or north, if you're in the Southern hemisphere) of a building matters the most for heat reduction.
If you want to get into it, I'd suggest finding your Köppen climate classification, and then finding either native trees that can thrive in a hotter-but-otherwise-similar climate than yours, or trees from such a climate. For example, I'm in a warm-summer Mediterranean climate so I'm looking at plants from Hot-summer Mediterranean climates that are hardy enough to still survive our winters (oaks, I'm looking at oaks. Fortunately, one species extends from here to down there, so that's easy).
I wouldn't usually advocate for non-native plants, but I'm seeing the climate change quickly enough that I think maybe humans should help with the pole-wards migration of plants.

Plan on Entertaining Outdoors This Summer? Here’s What You Need to Do It Right
Warmer weather entices people outside, and let’s face it, wide open spaces can provide more room to move around and reduce the potential for damage to your home’s interior.
However, to truly provide an outstanding outdoor entertaining experience, you’ll need to create a fun and inviting environment, Here’s what you need to create the type of outdoor space that neighbors won’t want to leave.
More than a grill
Tumblr media
You’ll gain a lot of friends with this Artisan Fire Pizza Oven by Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet. Image courtesy of La Cuisine Appliances.
A grill is an obvious starting place. “You’ve got to have a good looking and functional grill,” says Daniel Germani, founder and creative director of Daniel Germani Designs.  “My favorite is the one has a lid that folds all the way back and goes flush with the countertop.”
However, Josu Gaubeka, president of La Cuisine Appliances, a kitchen appliances distributor, says he’s also seeing an increasing number of other appliances and accessories in summer kitchens.  “They’re going beyond the BBQ, and building out full kitchens. In fact, many families are adding pizza ovens to keep the kids and their friends close by.”
Specialized cookers
Tumblr media

In addition to grills and pizza ovens, homeowners are also adding other types of cookers. “We’re seeing specialized cookers, such as side burners for boiling seafood or wok cooking, and smokers,” according to Mitch Slater, CEO and Founder, Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens and Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens.
However, if you want to put a specialty appliance, like an Argentinian grill, in cabinetry, Slater warns that you’ll need to use non-combustible materials, like stainless steel, “Also, it’s best to line your cabinets with firebrick so they won’t become discolored due to extreme heat exposure,” he says.
Another point to keep in mind is that your exterior kitchen layout is as important as your indoor kitchen layout.
Water and refrigeration
Tumblr media
Sinks and refrigerators add convenience. Image: Ozgur Coskun/Shutterstock
“I’m being called on by developers of luxury condominiums to add summer kitchens on each unit – including an electric grill, ice maker, and sink,” says Gaubeka. That comes as no surprise to Germani.  “A sink and a refrigerator are must-have items, and I like to include 2 fridges in my outdoor kitchens — one for food and one for beverages,’ he says.
In fact, if you want to maximize time with guests by avoiding trips indoors, Slater recommends duplicating your indoor kitchen. “In addition to a sink and refrigerator, you could also include trash cabinets, and even dishwashers manufactured for outdoor use.”
However, in lieu of an actual refrigerator, Gaubeka says some homeowners are installing refrigerated drawers.
Shade
Tumblr media

When the sun is beaming down, you’ll need to protect your friends and family members from those damaging rays. “Cantilevered overhangs provide lots of shade while cooking/lounging outdoors,” according to Miami-based architect Choeff Levy Fischman. But that’s not your only option. Slater recommends using fans, misters, and light-colored furniture as additional cooling sources.
Lighting
Tumblr media
Lighting provides safety and highlights design features. Image courtesy of Belgard
“Having good lighting allows you to create a mood, grill and entertain far after the sun goes down and the martinis start to flow,” says Germani. In addition to being an entertainment element, lights also create a safe environment, so you won’t get sued because someone tripped and fell in the dark. HGTV/DIY host Matt Blashaw’s outdoor lighting tips are a good guide for using light strips, spotlights, etc. Also, Duane Draughon, owner and lead designer at VizX Design Studios in Lisle, IL, recommends an overhead structure trellis pergola with lighting.
Entertainment
Tumblr media
Cheer for your favorite team with an outdoor TV. Image courtesy of Belgard
“As we navigate from the inside to the outdoor kitchen, entertainment will also transform these spaces with additions like outdoor speakers and big screen TVs,” says Wendy Hammerman, Founder & Lead Designer at WLH Interiors, a full-service interior design studio in New City, NY.
But as popular as TVs are, Patti Wynkoop, VP of Product Development and Purchasing for Miller & Smith, which builds new homes and develops real estate in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Maryland, believes that music is even more popular as an outdoor entertainment feature. “Outdoor ceiling speakers make it easy to enjoy your favorite music while you cook or entertain guests,” she says.
However, when incorporating technology, consider the needs of your guests. “Be sure to include several usable power outlets for cell phone charging,” advises Draughon.
Seating/Furniture
Tumblr media
Provide multiple seating options. Image courtesy of Miller & Smith
Seating is an important choice as it will determine your entertaining options. “While outdoor wicker furniture has been popular in the past, we see a lot more built-in bench seating styled with throw pillows and cushions for a casual, comfortable feel that’s able to accommodate more people,” according to Hammerman.
You’ll probably prefer to have guests sitting upright at tables to reduce spills when they’re eating. However, consider mixing this type of seating with more relaxing options. “Sunken seating areas provide depth and additional space for entertaining,” according to Fischman.
And there’s something else you should keep in mind when choosing furniture. “Composite furniture such as sofas, lounge chairs and end tables are maintenance free, fade resistant and easy on the eyes,” says Wynkoop.
Flooring and ceiling considerations
Tumblr media
Your flooring should be durable. Image courtesy of Dekton Nilium Flooring
Flooring should be durable, yet stylish. “Beadboard is a solid choice in flooring materials for an entertainment space and it is often used to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living areas,” Wynkoop says. For decks, she recommends Duadek outdoor waterproof flooring. “The suede color is often the best neutral choice for entertainment spaces as it provides flexibility with decor and rugs.”
Tumblr media
Maintain the flow between your interior and exterior areas. Image courtesy of Miller & Smith
Just as the connection in flooring is important for flow, Wynkoop says consistency in ceiling height and material will also marry indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces. “If you have a ceiling in your outdoor entertainment space, adding tongue & groove planks or panels gives the appearance of a plank installation – painted or stained – and is perceived as a more refined level of detail.”
Planning for colder weather
Tumblr media
With the right setup, you can entertain outdoors at least 3 seasons of the year. Image: TimAbramowitz/Getty Images
Summer will be over before you know it, but by planning wisely, you can continue to entertain outdoors well into the fall months. “Just like indoor furniture, you can add cushions, throw blankets and pillows to your outdoor furniture for comfort and enjoyability throughout the year,” Wynkoop says.  Firepits and outdoor fireplaces can also keep you warm and toasty when the weather turns colder.

Shade

When the sun is beaming down, you’ll need to protect your friends and family members from those damaging rays. “Cantilevered overhangs provide lots of shade while cooking/lounging outdoors,” according to Miami-based architect Choeff Levy Fischman. But that’s not your only option. Slater recommends using fans, misters, and light-colored furniture as additional cooling sources.
Lighting

“Having good lighting allows you to create a mood, grill and entertain far after the sun goes down and the martinis start to flow,” says Germani. In addition to being an entertainment element, lights also create a safe environment, so you won’t get sued because someone tripped and fell in the dark. HGTV/DIY host Matt Blashaw’s outdoor lighting tips are a good guide for using light strips, spotlights, etc. Also, Duane Draughon, owner and lead designer at VizX Design Studios in Lisle, IL, recommends an overhead structure trellis pergola with lighting.
Entertainment

Your flooring should be durable. Image courtesy of Dekton Nilium Flooring
Flooring should be durable, yet stylish. “Beadboard is a solid choice in flooring materials for an entertainment space and it is often used to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living areas,” Wynkoop says. For decks, she recommends Duadek outdoor waterproof flooring. “The suede color is often the best neutral choice for entertainment spaces as it provides flexibility with decor and rugs.”

My Presentation: Birds, Birds, Birds
My in class presentation was about birds. I didn't just do any type of birds though, I had specific type of birds that I researched. The specific types of birds that i researched were birds of North America, birds of Asia, birds of Antartica, and then more narrowly, birds of Ohio. I researched each species of bird that is native to each area of the world, and even found some cool facts about certain birds native to North America. I found that there are  914 Species of birds in North America. The federal Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that a minimum of 10 billion birds breed in the United States every year and that as many as 20 billion may be in the country during the fall migratory season. I also researched the smallest bird native to North America, the heaviest bird native to North America, and the fastest flying bird native to North America. The smallest bird was the Calliope Hummingbird. At 3 inches long, the Calliope Hummingbird is North America's smallest bird. The heaviest bird native to North America is the Trumpeter Swan.  At 40 pounds or more, the Trumpeter Swan is North America's heaviest bird. And lastly, the fastest bird native to North America is the Peregrine Falcon. The Peregrine Falcon regularly attains speeds of 40-60 mph and has been clocked in steep dives at 175 mph. I also covered the migratory behaviors of North American birds. Migrating birds can cover thousands of miles in their annual travels, often traveling the same course year after year with little deviation. First-year birds often make their very first migration on their own. Somehow they can find their winter home despite never having seen it before, and return the following spring to where they were born. The secrets of their amazing navigational skills aren’t fully understood, partly because birds combine several different types of senses when they navigate. Birds can get compass information from the sun, the stars, and by sensing the earth’s magnetic field. They also get information from the position of the setting sun and from landmarks seen during the day. There’s even evidence that for some birds, sense of smell plays a role. There are four different “flyways” for migrating birds in North America. These flyways are called the Central Flyway, Mississippi Flyway, Pacific Flyway, and the Atlantic Flyway. The next area I decided to research was Asia. Asia has some of the highest mountain ranges on our planet incorporating much wildlife and reflecting an amazing foray of bird life. With around 2,800 species of birds, no one can doubt that perhaps Asia has the largest bird population in the world. One of the most interesting birds I found in my all of my research however is native to Asia. This bird is the Pink Headed Duck. In 1948 a single specimen of the Pink Headed Duck, Rhodonessa caryophyllacea, was donated to the Division of Birds of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The following year was the last time anyone spotted one of its species—which lived in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Myanmar—alive. In 2014 Daniel Thomas of Massey University, New Zealand, and Smithsonian ornithologist Helen James discovered carotenoid pigments, for the first time, in the plumage of a duck: Australia’s pink-eared duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus). This bird has tiny pink ‘ear’ spots on each side of its head. I also researched the migratory behavior of birds in Asia. Three migratory flyways cross Asia: the West Pacific Flyway, East-Asian Australasian Flyway, and the Central Asian Flyway. The East Asian-Australasian Flyway covers the majority of Asian countries. The next place I researched was Antartica. I was really interested to research birds of Antartica because it is always perceived as a place that doesn't have any species of animals other than polar bears and penguins. Surprisingly, there are 46 species of birds in Antarctica, including Albatrosses, Shearwaters and Petrels, Storm-Petrels, Diving petrels, Cormorants, Bitterns, Herons and Egrets, Ducks, Geese and Swans, Sheathbills, Skuas and Jaegers, Gulls, Terns; these too have waterproof feathers on top of downy insulating feathers. However, probably the best known species is the penguin. The penguins that live on the Antarctic Peninsula have an extremely short breeding season which means that between the time they come ashore, build a nest, lay an egg, hatch a chick and head back to sea for the winter is only about 4 months. The albatross is another of the iconic birds of Antarctica. The wandering albatross is the largest of seabirds, with a wingspan reaching 3m and a body mass of 8–12 kg. Albatrosses feed primarily on squid or schooling fish, but are familiar to mariners because they sometimes follow ships in hopes of dining on handouts or garbage. Lastly, I researched birds that are native to the great state of Ohio. The state bird, and most popular bird in Ohio is the Northern Cardinal. The Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky). Northern Cardinals eat mainly seeds and fruit, supplementing these with insects (and feeding nestlings mostly insects). I had a great time researching these birds, and it makes me really happy knowing that I can do a class project, learn so much about birds I knew nothing about, and yet, I still had so much fun doing it!
