"how do I keep my art from being scraped for AI from now on?"

if you post images online, there's no 100% guaranteed way to prevent this, and you can probably assume that there's no need to remove/edit existing content. you might contest this as a matter of data privacy and workers' rights, but you might also be looking for smaller, more immediate actions to take.

...so I made this list! I can't vouch for the effectiveness of all of these, but I wanted to compile as many options as possible so you can decide what's best for you.

Discouraging data scraping and "opting out"

robots.txt - This is a file placed in a website's home directory to "ask" web crawlers not to access certain parts of a site. If you have your own website, you can edit this yourself, or you can check which crawlers a site disallows by adding /robots.txt at the end of the URL. This article has instructions for blocking some bots that scrape data for AI.

HTML metadata - DeviantArt (i know) has proposed the "noai" and "noimageai" meta tags for opting images out of machine learning datasets, while Mojeek proposed "noml". To use all three, you'd put the following in your webpages' headers:

Have I Been Trained? - A tool by Spawning to search for images in the LAION-5B and LAION-400M datasets and opt your images and web domain out of future model training. Spawning claims that Stability AI and Hugging Face have agreed to respect these opt-outs. Try searching for usernames!

Kudurru - A tool by Spawning (currently a Wordpress plugin) in closed beta that purportedly blocks/redirects AI scrapers from your website. I don't know much about how this one works.

ai.txt - Similar to robots.txt. A new type of permissions file for AI training proposed by Spawning.

ArtShield Watermarker - Web-based tool to add Stable Diffusion's "invisible watermark" to images, which may cause an image to be recognized as AI-generated and excluded from data scraping and/or model training. Source available on GitHub. Doesn't seem to have updated/posted on social media since last year.

Image processing... things

these are popular now, but there seems to be some confusion regarding the goal of these tools; these aren't meant to "kill" AI art, and they won't affect existing models. they won't magically guarantee full protection, so you probably shouldn't loudly announce that you're using them to try to bait AI users into responding

Glaze - UChicago's tool to add "adversarial noise" to art to disrupt style mimicry. Devs recommend glazing pictures last. Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)

WebGlaze - Free browser-based Glaze service for those who can't run Glaze locally. Request an invite by following their instructions.

Mist - Another adversarial noise tool, by Psyker Group. Runs on Windows and Linux (Nvidia GPU required) or on web with a Google Colab Notebook.

Nightshade - UChicago's tool to distort AI's recognition of features and "poison" datasets, with the goal of making it inconvenient to use images scraped without consent. The guide recommends that you do not disclose whether your art is nightshaded. Nightshade chooses a tag that's relevant to your image. You should use this word in the image's caption/alt text when you post the image online. This means the alt text will accurately describe what's in the image-- there is no reason to ever write false/mismatched alt text!!! Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)

Sanative AI - Web-based "anti-AI watermark"-- maybe comparable to Glaze and Mist. I can't find much about this one except that they won a "Responsible AI Challenge" hosted by Mozilla last year.

Just Add A Regular Watermark - It doesn't take a lot of processing power to add a watermark, so why not? Try adding complexities like warping, changes in color/opacity, and blurring to make it more annoying for an AI (or human) to remove. You could even try testing your watermark against an AI watermark remover. (the privacy policy claims that they don't keep or otherwise use your images, but use your own judgment)

given that energy consumption was the focus of some AI art criticism, I'm not sure if the benefits of these GPU-intensive tools outweigh the cost, and I'd like to know more about that. in any case, I thought that people writing alt text/image descriptions more often would've been a neat side effect of Nightshade being used, so I hope to see more of that in the future, at least!

Standard terms: 

Provide visual references of the character you wish me to draw. These may be screen shots of a game/show/etc, picrew, or illustrations from other artists. Provide an expression, pose, or vibe you would like to see the character drawn in. 

Commissions are for personal use only. Give credit if posted on social media or used as a pfp or used in any way. In no way may the watermark be removed. 

I have the right to refuse any commission request without having to explain my decision.

I have the right to stop/cancel a commission due to poor communication, rude or inappropriate behavior, or any breach of these terms of service. If I cancel the commission due to the previous grievances, I will keep the deposit but refund any additional payments made.

The buyer must pay the 50% down payment when the commission is requested. The rest of the payment must be paid in full when the product is completed. Upon full payment received through Paypal, I will send the full resolution jpeg to the client. 

I own all rights to the work. Fanart commissions may be used by me to make prints in my shop or advertise my work.  Feeding my work to AI is prohibited.

Wait patiently for your commission. It may take up to 1-2 weeks for your commission to be completed in full. You are welcome to ask for updates, but updates will be given at the sketch, flat color, and render stages depending on the type of art piece commissioned. 

If you need a rushed job, an additional 25% fee is required for me to finish the piece before your deadline. Otherwise, do not rush me. I am a human being and will complete the commissions as I am able. 

Process: I will send updates with a large watermark across the entire image during the sketch, flat color, and render stages depending on the commission. Upon completing the commission, you may request 3 minor changes. Any more than 3 will incur additional fees. Once the product is accepted, I will send the full resolution jpeg with a small watermark (which cannot be removed) for your use.

I am opening mini commissions for a new style I am trying out!

These are going for $12 USD per icon and $20 per fullbody, with commissions of more than one character being $15 per fullbody character.

Designs will be simplified to a certain extent, though I try to keep all details that I can include present. Backgrounds start at +$5 USD depending on complexity.

Ordering

By ordering you agree to and are bound by the following terms:

I reserve the right to decline any commission or cancel at any time with a full or partial refund given based on the progress made.

I do not give refunds unless for the reason stated above or emergencies in regards to the client.

I will not begin your commission until I can confirm the payment has been made. Orders with payments not sent within 48 hours will be cancelled.

Payment will only be accepted via PayPal. Please be aware of that before ordering.

You have the right to request updates on your commission.

Waiting time depends on what type of drawing you commissioned and what place in the queue you have. I’ll inform you of the estimated waiting time and if there are any delays.

Payment Process

Once I have confirmed your order you have 48 hours to send payment. Please use only the Friends and Family option on PayPal.

I only accept USD. Please calculate currency exchange rates and fees before paying to ensure you pay the correct amount.

Once payment has been received you no longer may cancel your order. Please refer to my first few bullet points for exceptions.

Usage Rights

You may use your commission for any personal uses such as profile icon, forum signatures, page decoration and so on.

You MAY NOT use your commission for any commercial purposes, to produce merchandise, or in any means to make profit.

You may repost the artwork you have ordered with proper credit and a link back to my Instagram, Tumblr or Twitter page, depending on where you’re reposting.

You are not allowed to alter the image in any way or remove any watermarks.

You are not allowed to take credit for the drawing in any way or retrace it.

I hold the rights to any commissioned images and may use it in any way i see fit. ( promoting myself, reposting, etc ).

Alterations

I will send you an APPROVAL SKETCH of your commission before sending in the full piece. The objective of this sketch is to show you the rough look of your commission. This is the time for you to request changes FREE OF CHARGE. Any changes requested after the sketch has been approved will be charged $5 per change.

After sketch approval I will not make major changes ( pose, entire outfit, etc ).

The only free of charge changes you can request after the sketch approval are color ones, but keep it minimal.

I will not be responsible for making changes if you have an unclear or blurry reference. Please ensure your references are of a good quality before ordering.

I  as the artist have the right to change my Terms of Service without prior warning. It is your responsibility to reread my TOS each time you order to ensure you have read the updated version and avoid cancellation.

Prices are generally SET but there may be slight increases for very complex designs or scenes though this is rare.

I offer quite a large variety of things but if its not on the list please do not ask. The list is made for both your and my convenience.

○Fullbody- 65 (+30 for additional character #1, + 65 for ever character after)

○Halfbody-45 (+20 for additional characters)

○Icon-15 (no additional characters, intended for profile picture)

These are fully rendered (shaded) and have additional details to polish them.

These include a simple pattern or solid color background (like a pride flag or sunset)

Backgrounds can be added but they can vary wildly in price depending on what youd like. Example 1, a character at a cafe, with full veiw of desert display case and tables, +40-50. Example 2, a character on a couch, nothing but the back wall and a sliver of a coffee table, +20

Reference sheets are another can of worms! These can take much longer than regular commisions given the time and attention to detail needed sometimes.

○Furry Ref 80 Includes 2 veiws, front and back, along with a small pelt display generally used if clothes or pose is obstructing design, and both hand and feet paws, mouth, and eyes, and wings shown seperately if needed . Aside from that colors and name will be displayed.

○Big Pony Ref ((mare BASE only)) 65 (Includes 4 veiws of the pony and some additional boxes to showcase expressions. The cutie mark and colors will be displayed)

○Small Pony Ref 20 Any screenshot from the mlp show edited to fit your pony! Will NOT include background just your guy!

Telegram stickers are a new addition to my commision list! They come in PACKS and can not be bought individually. To clarify, these are emoji like stickers used in the messaging app Telegram and are NOT physically printed or intended to be printed.

My art can and will be posted wherever I please though I will not take credit for your character. You may use my art for profile pictures, backgrounds or PERSONAL use with credit. My art may NOT be used for anything commercial including youtube videos in any capacity, twitch stream layouts, subscriber, donation or sub alerts. You may not print, sell, or produce any merchandise with my art regardless of if its intended for personal use.

You can post the artwork anywhere or use it on your profile as long as there is CLEAR and OBVIOUS credit to me with a link of some kind. You canot use the art for profit, that includes prints, merchandise or use in videos or games in any capacity. You may not edit the work or remove the watermark.

No refunds! Due to my fast work pace and 24 hour turnaround, refunds are not an option as I would lose money and time on my work. If clear communication is not recived, and the art is not up to your standards because of it, that is on you. 1. I use Paypal!

2. I will start the commission after receiving payment. After this, I can show you progress and you can tell what changes you would like.

3. I take around 3 days to three weeks for the commission. This depends on the complexity of it and personal reasons.

4. I dont do refunds, sorry!

5. I have the right to post the artwork on my social medias, but if you dont want it to be posted, let me know.

6. You own the artwork in personal use only. Means you can make the artwork into a wallpaper, profile pic and repost with credits. But you cant make merch of it, remove my watermark and call your selfmade.

7. If I feel uncomfortable at any point, I can deny the commission.

8. * NSFW art is restricked to adults ONLY! You need to show somesort of ID that youre 18+

9. Characters regarding NSFW art need to be 18+ too.

The Old Web part 1: Neocities and Geocities

Today I discovered the Old Web movement.

As a 2003 kiddo I was not an internet user in the late 90s and early 2000s when the "old internet" was at its height. But I recently discovered that there lies a place beyond our Twitters and Instagrams of the present. Deeper into the internet there is a thriving community of personal, amateur-coded, not-for-profit websites, many of which are hosted on Neocities.

But before we can really get into neocities, we must talk about it's ancestor geocities. Geocities was created in 1994 by David Bohnett and John Reznor to be a website-hosting service and a way to discover people's personal websites. In 1999 it was bought out by yahoo! (the destroyer) at a time when it was the third most popular website on the whole internet. Yahoo! changed a bunch of shit, forgoing the "cities" aspect of grouping together websites of a certain theme so that people can discover websites related to their interests. Yahoo! instead wanted to focus on using the person's yahoo! usernames in the URLs. This is one of the first of MANY times that corporations will ruin things on the internet for the sake of profit.

Yahoo! eventually decided geocities wasn't profitable enough, even after the website had added advertisements, paid premium benefits (which screwed over people who didn't pay), and a geocities watermark on every website it hosted that you couldn't remove. Geocities was killed by yahoo! in 2009.

Shortly after the website was announced to be shutting down Internet Archive (bless them) and a few other groups made it their mission to archive the geocities websites that would otherwise be wiped from the internet forever. These campaigns were widely successful.

After geocities was gone, there was now a niche to fill. Neocities sprung up four years later, taking its place. In 2023 it boasts over 600,000 websites being hosted on its platforms. It has links to people's personal websites, a webcomic where a cat teaches you HTML, and many guides to making your own website.

The community of custom website owners is alive and well, equipped with HTML knowledge, friendship, a healthy dose of nostalgia, and their own manifesto. They believe in the idea that the internet was better before everything was dictated by profit, algorithms, and efficiency. I'll get more into the community aspect in part 2.
