I've been wondering, what animal/s is Lakritz based on? I can see dragon elements, but his webbed feet suggest an amphibian like creature. Idk, I'm just curious 🤔😁
Tumblr media
Lakritz is influenced by marine iguanas and leopard sharks, but I honestly didn't think that hard about it. I just wanted to draw a cutie

Hastrman, Josef Lada
Vodník are male water demons from Slavic folklore inhabiting rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. They resemble the German nixe or the Scottish kelpie . Vodník are known to both Western and Eastern Slavs, but only to the Slovenes of the South . Belief in them does not appear among other South Slavs, but in Dalmatia, morski ljudi , half-fish, half-human beings, were known. His partner is often a mermaid or rusalka.
The word for a water demon in most Slavic languages is simply derived from water, examples include, in addition to the Czech vodník, the Russian vodjanoj (водяно́й) or the Polish wodnik . In Czech, the expression vodní muž (water man) or vodní mužíček (also water man) also occasionally appears , similar to the Slovenian povodnji mož or the Sorbian wódny muž.
In Czech, one can also find names derived from the German wasserman "water man". These are names such as hastrman , vaserman , vastrman , in Moravia also bestrman , in Silesia hasrman and in Ještěd region vosrmon . [according to this article the “water man designation was to avoid calling it vodník because the word brought such terror]. Its use is documented as early as the 14th century . From the German nixe "water demon" is derived the Lusatian nyks and nykus . From the widespread belief in his dripping scythe the name šosáč used in Litovel region is derived . From heating, their typical activity, is derived the Polish topielec and toplec .
The Czech water demon has the appearance of a small man with green hair, nicely dressed in green or red, with water dripping from his tail. According to another version, he is an ugly old green man with frog-like features such as a wide mouth, webbed fingers, and bulging eyes, at other times his right eye is red, water constantly drips from his hair, and his body is soft as mud. His speech is slurred and "twisted".

He attracts mainly children and young girls, for example by hanging colorful ribbons and mirrors on the shore, or by transforming himself into a child who falls into the water and drowns his rescuer. Later, in folk tradition and popular culture, the waterman lost his malevolence and became a comical character, similar to the Čert.
The water-dweller can be bound with bast rope, colored laces, a klokoč (a type of tree, found especially in Southern Moravia) consecrated on Palm Sunday, or a rope made of nine types of wood. It can also be neutralized by a brave person who cuts off its wet tail, wraps it with a rosary, and buries it in consecrated ground or at a crossroads. The water-dweller will chase the person, because if it does not get its tail by the next dawn, it will die. Herbs such as chernobyl, tolita, turan, fern, or devětsil also work as protection against it.

The Red Lady (redraw).
Sometimes, going back to your roots is necessary.
I wanted to revisit this illustration I created at the beginning of last year, and it’s interesting to see how my style evolves and the solutions I find to "resolve" images.
I must say I’m surprised and deeply moved by the growth I’m experiencing in my abilities.
Ahead of me lies a challenging and important year, filled with projects that, hopefully, will come to fruition.
So, I want to face what’s to come by casting a glance at the past and trying to improve my here and now!

Odds and ends:
WATER SPRITE
In October 1963, a spout of water burst mysteriously forth from the wall of the Martin family's TV room in Methuen, Massachusetts. They had been watching a damp patch appear and were puzzling over its cause when they heard a loud popping sound, and the gushing began. It lasted around twenty seconds. Fifteen minutes later another fountain appeared in another part of their home. This one lasted less than half a minute as well. Over the next few days, spurts of water flowed from various places and rooms at frequent intervals. The family moved out, because their house was waterlogged.
The water sprite followed them to the next town where they were staying with Mrs. Martin's mother. Soon after their arrival, five rooms in her place were soaked as well. The deputy fire chief searched for leaky pipes or some other explanation, but found none. The deputy was on hand to witness the puzzling popping noise followed by a jet of water erupting from the plaster wall. The water's trajectory was two feet.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin and their daughter decided to return home. Mr. Martin had the house's pipes drained and the water supply turned off at the main valve. The mischievous force would not be denied. Floods and fountains continued to burst forth, and soon the house was saturated beyond any hope of their remaining. The drenched family returned to Mrs. Martin's mother's house. The sprite returned with them. How gallons of water could leak, spout, and otherwise be ejected from dry walls was never explained.
