Yugioh is at its peak ridiculousness and parody-of-selfness whenever it goes "Your opponent is a man who has been possessed and overtaken by ancient, mystical occult forces, and they have now challenged you to a game of death, where only the winner shall leave with their life! However the game is deadly for reasons completely unrelated to the dark magic possessing him. It has been constructed from normal murder stuff. The other-worldly powers at work have decided to just like, build a bomb."

aight... started watchin gx-men '97 couple weeks ago, was grinning like a dork throughout the first couple episodes, because nostalgia, right? simple hearing the intro gets me giddy!
and then episode 5 came around and damn... the ending just fuckin broke me. i had to pause. like, it's not that often that pivotal scene/episode gets like that. like there was sg's meridian (repeat thereof increasingy obtained comedic value tbh) and sunday, DetCo's Moonlight Sonata Case, then there was that chapter of FMA (4th ep of fmab) that kicked the floor out from right under my feet, with Dororo ('19)'s ep 5 being a close contender, and DtB ep 11 like... and now X-Men'79 ep five with Rouge not being able to feel Remy like... damn that's one hell of a way to end an episode!
anyway, had to pause and only like yesterday picked up again from where I left and... damn... just damn... X-Men '97 is X-Men done right, it's Marvel done right! still got a couple episodes to go, but damn...

if you don't mind me asking, how exactly are you watching the show? as in, are you watching an episode subbed first and then dubbed to see the difference or?
im watchin the dub first and foremost actually! im just a yugioh dub liker in general but I also watch primarily when im drawing, so theyre more accessible for me. I Will go and take a peek at subbed episodes if there's Big Undubbed Chunks like with gx and 5ds though, or if I wanna see where I think something got changed (or if someone tips me off that there's a Particularly big scene the dub cut or altered--I actually havent done it too much with arc-v; since its dub is remarkably pretty faithfully translated im finding!)
eventually i will watch all the subs alongside all my dub watches, it's just an investment i dont quite have time for atm dfhghjdfs i did end up watching like a solid two thirds of zexal subbed too because zexal ii was making me go bonkers yonkers

Welp. That’s Symphogear G completed. Ngl, I completely forgot to livetweet partway through episode 11 and onward... BUT CAN YOU BLAME ME? (Continued under cut because I had LOTS to say)
That entire ending was AMAZING. The entire thing with how Maria gained the ability to use the Airgetlám Gear, how Hibiki regained her Gungnir from the pendant through SHEER AWESOMENESS BASICALLY, the entirety of the mini duel that happened between Chris & Tsubasa and the one between Kirika and Shirabe (the latter of which made me experience all kinds of feels). THE FACT THAT THEY BROUGHT BACK TSUBASA’S FIRST SONG FROM S1 LEGIT MADE ME LOSE IT A LITTLE BIT CONSIDERING HOW MUCH I LOVE IT.
Dr. Ver FINALLY got his comeuppance, getting sent straight to jail rather than getting the hero’s death he so desperately wanted (and kinda deserved, but hey, that’s beside the point). And of course, that entire final battle with the Nephilim was hype as hell seeing all the Gear Wielders in their X-Drive modes, FIGHTING OFF MILLIONS OF NOISE AT FULL POWER. The ending was honestly super pure and heartwarming too with its message.
...Oh and you think I’m gonna just IGNORE all the HibiMiku stuff that was happening in a bunch of those scenes? My heart felt fit to burst after some of that it was so amazing.
To be honest, G was surprising in a lot of ways. But a majority of those surprises turned out really well and made me super happy and hype! The other surprises that didn’t do that... you probably understand why they didn’t make me feel any positive emotions (ONORE VER-HAKASE).
But yeah, that’s Symphogear G all said and done. And now it’s onto GX, and you better believe me when I say I am ready to BELIEVE IN JUSTICE AND HOLD A DETERMINATION TO FIST. AND MY HYPE...
...SHALL IGNITE LIKE A BLAZING FLAME!!!

judai: since johan is gone i’m gonna throw myself headfirst into another dimension and literally put my life at risk with every duel by challenging anyone who gets in my way in a dimension where losing a duel means death
o’brien: why.
judai: johan is about 90% of my impulse control.

What card game anime/manga are a must watch?
Tumblr media
Thank you for asking!
Let's see... These are things I do think have value, but keep in mind I'm not all knowing, and I try to avoid listing things I am in progress with, and I am trying to keep
Yu-Gi-Oh!, the original story, as a manga, is entirely worth reading as a manga and is arguably part of the reason the card game manga/anime industry is the way it is. Much owes its success to Yu-Gi-Oh! finding its success as an elder statesman in the industry that paved the road forward for the rest of its niche in the industry.
It has a strong narrative construction, is fairly laser focused on its characters once it really gets going, and after the first few volumes, little feels wasted.
Cardfight!! Vanguard, or at least its first season, strikes a chord with many, and is arguably a good showing of what you can do trying to remain *more* grounded compared to many entries that go for the more supernatural route, focusing on training, tournaments, and a plot that takes, IMO, too long to get going, but serves as a good magical realism metaphor for drug addiction.
The first half of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's is arguably some of the best serialized dark cardgame cyberpunk fantasy you'll run into. Now arguably it half bakes in the back end of the Dark Signer arc for various real world reasons, but is a satisfying full story all on its own.
Wizard's Soul - Koi no Jihad is probably one of the most grounded work you'd ever read based on cardgames, focusing on one girl's goals and personal trauma and her issues playing anything other than a very specific Deck Style, as she tries to work her way through a Best of 3 Swiss Style Tournament.
Future Card Buddyfight Hundred I'd argue is the strongest and most worthwhile entry in Buddyfight, and shows what you can do with a fairly well organized attempt at a second season, with a darker storyline, a willingness to try and address an overly unflawed hero, and trying to tie back its first season into a more interesting and coherent mythology.
selector infected WIXOSS and selector spread WIXOSS while I don't think they're particularly as good as many do, takes a very interesting complete story of its two season that asks "What if teenage girls found themselves caught in what are ostensibly Dark Games from Yu-Gi-Oh!" and actually touched on people having long term consequences as a result. And may have value to many.
Battle Spirits Shonen Gekiha Dan while a somewhat ridiculous name, follows a fairly heavy storyline that leads into its stronger sequel Battle Spirits Brave, which form a 100 or so episode saga that touches on what a lot of people wanted from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's: Race/Class Warfare, PTSD, Climate Disaster, Extremism, and a generally heavier story concerned about its characters.
Battle Spirits Sword Eyes is a series that takes a fairly generic JRPG plot, and much like Gekiha Dan/Brave, asks, to what lengths, to what efforts, are you willing to go to try to make a better world. Would you take down your brother? Would you defy God themself?
Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS, what if a long running franchise had to reinvent itself with the demands of a new card game and a new much younger cast... but it did this by questioning why would a new game exist, discuss, even if in a somewhat milquetoast argument, the rights of consumers and the creative commons, with a heavy usage of a recurring cast, and having prior events and jokes keep building up on a narrative that isn't too impenetrable, but rewards you for watching.
I'd also like to note the anime of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX all have extremely worthwhile endgames, and Judai from GX is a fascinating character study of watchin a character start happy go lucky and is entirely willing to slowly but surely break them down, give them severe trauma, and slowly rebuild them as a person. I would list it but I... let's list it anyways, GX is worth watching if you want to see how a light hearted series can become a worthwhile moody character study and touches on the fears of growing up and changing.
Oh! One last one! Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress, a show that goes strictly 'what if there is no supernatural plot', 'what if it's all character driven story' and is approachable for those not too heavy into card games, but is willing to compensate by giving lush beautiful battle sequences.
Edit:
Oh right, on the recommended card game anime/manga, Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game Structures is definitely worth reading if you're a card game fan who wants a strictly grounded story and real cards.

I like how the mystery of Alexis’ missing brother is like such a serious plot point for so long and then once we get him back he’s sillyguy supreme. He got unpossessed and immediately got goofy

The idea that a character having long hair can be a dramatic reveal about their gender is always fundamentally silly but it’s extra silly in anime and extra extra silly in the series that set the bar for anime hair. Jaden finds out Blair has long hair and this is supposed to be a dramatic revelation that she is a girl and seconds later Zane walks in, a boy who has nearly the same hairstyle.

...wut
Yeah, that sorta summarizes a lot of my thoughts for GX Episode 3. So many revelations, all of it making things so confusing, even when considering past information. All in all, I have a LOT more questions thanks to this episode, and I’m okay with that. Also, that ending scene made my theorycrafter brain go kinda crazy with possibilities. (seriously, what is going on with you these days Gungnir?)
Anyway, here’s the link to my reaction to this episode. And sorry about the occasional noise, I was tryin to work on something a bit while watching, and I pulled a tiny bit of a stupid, so it didn’t occur to me until after it had happened that the mic was picking up the extra noise.

You know, over the weekend of the con I mentioned that I should re-watch GX, so I started it up, and I stumbled onto the info page and realized that if I just waited a few more days I could start on the same day that it ended. It’s mind blowing that GX ended ten years ago, and some of the eps I literally haven’t seen since then. I do remember rewatching some of it with my ex but that was still about 8 years ago, too.. I’ve missed it ! It’s a really nostalgic series for me, because me and a group of friends watched it every week, and talked about it, and roleplayed it, and dueled together. GX was a good time. Maybe that contributes to why Judai has so much sentimental value too. Man, though, time to get watchin’.
