The Facts About Living in Arlington VA
Arlington VA is an American city located in Loudoun County, sometimes called simply Arlington Virginia. The city is located on the northern bank of the Rappahannock River just across the District of Columbia. Arlington is the third largest city in Loudoun and is one of the most populous communities in this area.
The city of Arlington is home to some of the country's most important monuments and buildings, including the Washington National Cathedral, Arlington Memorial Bridge, and the U.S. Capitol building. Some of the famous landmarks in Arlington include the George Washington Memorial, the Washington National Cathedral, and the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Arlington also has some beautiful gardens, parks, and beaches.
Arlington is served by the Dulles Greenway and is known for its public transportation. There are a number of bus routes serving the area. There are also a number of commuter rail lines serving the area, with many of these being available on major holidays. There is also a commuter ferry, which can take commuters to the other end of the city. A number of taxis and luxury sedans are available in Arlington, but private transportation is also commonly used.
Arlington is one of the most densely populated areas in the state of Virginia. This means that residents who live in the city often find themselves surrounded by the surrounding suburbs. Many of Arlington's residents live in communities that are a few miles outside the city limits.
Some of the most popular places in Arlington VA that residents can get to include the city's downtown, which includes the famous Tysons Corner shopping center. There are also a number of hospitals and colleges in Arlington, including the George Washington Medical Center. The area around Dulles Field is also home to a number of commercial and industrial firms and corporations, and residents living in these neighborhoods may find themselves driving to work in some cases.
Arlington has a number of entertainment venues, including the National Zoo, the Washington Redskins, the Arlington Public Library, and the Arlington Theater. These places offer residents a chance to go to events in the area. The National Zoo and the Arlington Public Library offer children a chance to learn about various animals and the environment they live in, as well as learning about the history of the area.
Living in Virginia is very similar to life in Washington DC. There are a number of residents living in the capital of the State that commute to work in areas such as Fairfax and Prince William. A number of students go to school in these cities and find it easy to live in them because the schools in Fairfax and Prince William are very good.
Arlington VA offers a number of activities and sports for residents of all ages, with a large number of high schools located here. This is the home to the Virginia Military Institute and also the prestigious Army and Air Force Academy. There are also a number of colleges and universities located in the area, such as the College of Notre Dame, George Mason University, and George Washington University.
Because Arlington VA is very populated, there are a number of high crime rates. The crime rate is higher than that in some of the less populated parts of Virginia. High crime rates can be attributed to the fact that Arlington has a large number of people from all over the world living in the area. In addition to high crime rates, Arlington is also known for its high-quality schools.
Residents of this area enjoy a number of great natural areas in the state of Virginia. The Blue Ridge Mountains provides residents with a variety of outdoor activities and recreation, while the Washington and James Rivers offer residents access to beautiful water. There are also several large parks in the area, including the Crystal City Park in Sterling.
Living in Arlington VA means you can easily travel from place to place. Many residents prefer to live in the Washington, D.C. metro area, so a number of buses and commuter rail lines make daily travel possible. The area also has an active downtown area and many places of business in the area.
Residents living in Arlington VA can get to many of the major metropolitan areas in the United States through various modes of transportation. The state is located in close proximity to the nation's capital, so residents will be able to reach other areas in the United States easily. Arlington residents have many opportunities to go to national parks and museums in the area, as well as other national landmarks.

1.2.10 HALLOWEEN NIGHT/NOVEMBER 1st 5:32 am‬
Warren County, Illinois
Deputy Sheriff Ben Meeker roared his brown and tan police cruiser almost right up to the shattered front door of Jamie Lee's Diner. As his headlights sparkled across all the shattered glass around the parking lot, his heart sank. Deputy McGrath of the US Marshals followed quickly in his black GMC Savanna, his headlights cutting through the rain and illuminating the fat and frightened face of Justin Lore, the man who had phoned 911 twenty minutes before.
As Meeker popped open his door and stepped out into the storm, more cruisers: some county, some state, some unknown—probably Feds he gathered by the looks of them—tore over the curb and splashed into the parking lot as well. Within moments, the holocaust of multiple flashing lights illuminated the walls and windows of the diner like a Christmas tree.
“Jesus Gawd Ben,” Justin moaned, coming around the side of the car to meet Meeker, “It's like a gawd damn massacre in there. Where's Leigh?”
Ben put a hand on the shoulder of the man he had known his whole life and together they ran back toward the restaurant, stopping just outside doors under the cover of the awning. Once there, Ben removed the hood of his rain coat and leaned against a line of rusted newspaper dispensers that had been empty for at least six months. No one read the newspaper anymore.
“Leigh's busy,” Ben said, watching as Deputy McGrath exited the vehicle and walked casually toward them as if he was oblivious to the drenching rain. “He's had---a err..family emergency.”
Justin didn't seem to care, “It's so bad...” he said, visibly fighting back tears, “I took the weekend shifts at the mill because holidays comin' up and all, so I came in here to get some breakfast before headin' out to work..and it's just plain awful Bengie...just awful.”
“Are you ready Deputy Meeker?” McGrath asked matter-of-factly.
Meeker nodded, “Call Mitch Larabee over at the Mill and tell him what happened and then go home, take a hot shower, and try to go back to sleep.” He said to Justin, “If Mitch has any questions tell him to call me.”
Justin sniffed and nodded. Ben didn't wait for him to go, instead he un-holstered his sidearm, and followed McGrath into the restaurant, their boots crunching on broken glass as they stepped in. All the lights were on, the jukebox was still playing...
Mr. Sandman
Bring me a dream
Make him the cutest
That I've ever seen.
There was a smoky smell, something had definitely burned, or was still burning in the kitchen. Meeker was pretty sure it was eggs. Directly in front of the door, laying on her back on a bed of broken glass was Taylor Rumspitz, her lifeless eyes were fixed on the ceiling, both arms lay outstretched in a gory Christ-pose. The top half of her head was completely blown off and flies were already beginning to light on the corner of her half-open mouth. A tray of broken dishes sat in the puddle of her blood and brains, along with a blood-soaked receipt.
A pang of sadness struck Meeker's chest like an electric shock. She was such a good kid, he thought, working her way through Community College classes at Langdon, picking up late shifts to provide for her and her son. Meeker had dated her mother Carol Rumspitz in the eleventh grade. Now he'd have to tell her that her daughter was dead.
Another waitress, Wilhelmina Peters, another girl Meeker had dated in High School lay face-down in a puddle of blood in the middle of the aisle between the window booths and the tables. Meeker felt a lump form in his throat. He also recognized Marshall Weathers and his good friend Pat Reagor slumped over in one of the booths. They met every morning here before sun-up to go fishing out on Harris Lake, wonder what led them out here in the storm ‪this morning‬, Meeker thought.
Tradition. His mind answered.
McGrath's voice startled him, “Can you ID all these victims?”
“Yes sir,” Meeker said dryly.
More cops filed past them, spreading out in a fan all over the restaurant. In the far corner Meeker saw Kyla Ruckshaw and her seven year old son Davey slumped over in another booth. Kyla met her ex-husband early on Saturday mornings to pass the kid off, per their divorce agreement. Davey's dad Donald Yates worked late nights at the same mill as Justin Lore, and picked his son up when he got off of work. They had been doing that since Davey was in diapers.
Meeker felt light-headed all of a sudden, his legs felt like they were stuck in jello. That was the thing about being a small town cop Deputy McGrath, he thought, of course I can ID all these victims. I know everything about every single one of them.
And it's gonna be even worse for Leigh, he thought, thinking of his friend and mentor who was sitting up at Haddonfield General right now with his daughter, not knowing whether or not Annie was gonna survive the horrific attack on her from that psychopathic lunatic. Now we have two more crazies butchering the townspeople. It felt so surreal, It's like the end of the goddamn world, he thought, this is just gonna kill Leigh.
Officer Mullenix came from the kitchen looking very pale, “Booger's dead,” he said with a wretch, referring to “Booger” Bernard Tyson, the head breakfast cook at the diner. “They stuck his head in the grease fryer.”
That explains the smell, Meeker thought rubbing his temples with one hand and holstering his sidearm with the other. “What the fuck is going on?” he whispered.
“I'll tell you what's going on,” McGrath answered, pulling a piece of chewing gum from his pocket and popping it in his mouth, “What's going on is that you have two very disturbed individuals out there and they're apparently still at large.” He took a deep breath, “Deputy Meeker, we have to find these individuals. We have to end this right here, right now in your town.”
“I agree sir,” Meeker took a deep breath himself and straightened up, he raised his voice, “Well boys, we need to get to bagging and tagging. We need to collect all the evidence, get all the photos we can get.”
“Forensics is finishing up at the park with that Tramer boy and are en route now,” Officer Kinnerly aka 'Doughboy' called out.
Meeker nodded and waved his hand.
“But Deputy Sheriff Meeker sir?” Doughboy said.
Meeker turned, McGrath turned as well. “What is it Kip?” Meeker asked.
“EMS boys got on the horn after taking that last girl...”
“Alice Martin,” Meeker's voice cracked. He cleared his throat and raised his voice so the other officers could hear him, “Come on boys! These are our people men, we can at least remember their names.”
“Yes sir,” Doughboy corrected himself, “After they dropped Alice off at County General, EMS boys got on the horn and told us that the morgue at the hospital is full sir.”
“Shit,” McGrath breathed under his breath.
“It's the Fetanyl sir...you know...the morgue's pretty much been full up all the time this past few years.”
“What about Yuva's funeral home?” Meeker asked.
“Well, that Tramer boy is there and Mr. Gudipati says he's already got three others who passed earlier this week. He says he can't take anymore either.” Doughboy answered.
“That's what I was afraid of,” McGrath growled.
“Well we can take them over to Russellville, they have..” Meeker began but McGrath cut him off.
“No, they have to stay here in Warren County.”
“Why?” Meeker asked.
“I hate to tell you this Deputy Meeker, but shit has just officially hit the fan.” McGrath replied.
“Well we just don't have a place to put all these people. We're not used to having so many people come up dead in one night in a small town like this Deputy McGrath.” Meeker put his hands on his hips, “Just what do you suggest we do?”
McGrath smacked his gum. “We need to get in touch with Springfield.”
“Why's that?” Meeker asked..
McGrath pulled his phone from his pocket. “With a body count this high and no where left to process the victims, we're gonna have to call in a response team...you know what that means?”
“What, like a portable morgue?”
“That's part of it. It means a whole fucking fleet of forensic people, pathologists, medical examiners, coroners...the whole shabang.” McGrath answered, looking through the contacts list in his phone.
“Okay...” Meeker answered, sensing more.
“You see the problem with that is, since ‪9/11‬, these kind of Ops Teams..or D-MORTs as they are called....are operated by the National Disaster Medical System, and they can only be requested by the Governor.”
“Okay....,” Meeker led him on again.
“That's National, as in Washington DC... by sunrise Deputy Meeker, your little town is going to be crawling with feds.”
McGrath hit a button on his phone and put it to his ear. He then added, “And the press.”
Meeker put his hand on his head and winced.

September 2, 2018 Creative Fiction Storytelling by Stella Carrier
Creative Fiction Storytelling Idea for me To try by September 2, 2018 andor sooner by Stella Carrier September 2, 2018 Creative Fiction Storytelling by Stella Carrier It is the year 2093 and I Lucas Haas am speaking from an afterlife world that is a celestial part of Canada though I have the freedom to choose where to reside even the type of celestial worlds that I have found myself as of 52 days ago. I am told that I easily resemble the lead singer of Saving Abel in the Addicted music video. I am easily allowed to communicate with people I have known in my earth life. However, I have discovered that the reason why sometimes some earth people try to contact friends andor family and it takes a while to reach them has little to do with how much they mutually miss their family members  and more because of how much busier things become in their afterlife. For instance, I only had 2 family members besides my spouse and 8 friends who I was close to who were there for me during my earth life through both my challenging and good times. However I was pleasantly surprised to discover a group of over 530 male and female spirits greeting me less than 10 minutes after I transitioned from my earth life to the heavenly realms that I now reside in. I am going to be learning from 3 of my celestial spirit guides in a pink mountain school how to help earth based spirits tap into and strengthen their intuition both in their sleeptime dreams and in their waking life. I am also going to preside over mystery schools both being open up on earth and here in the celestial realms that teach many male and female spirits how to integrate their storytelling passions both with their sleeptime dreams and connections with their higher selves/celestial spirit allies and imagining how their lives would be in heaven and how that pertains to their akashic records, opening up to their imagination abilities while integrating the energy of both critics and allies into building them into a wiser and more powerful being, and utilizing certain tools such as their favorite songs, music, books, interests etc. in helping them uncover some of the messages of their most creative and self confident selves that their souls are encouraging them to uncover. What Do I Mean By This; A 45 year old Married female working for the military who was a friend of mine unexpectedly played romantic matchmaker to a 48 year old military public affairs officer female and a male in the culinary industry. This military public affairs officer female  was also related to a  46 year old coworker that the 45 year old female was training and getting along with well. The 45 year old female was recently traveling to a heaven based replica world of Canada in her dreams at a writing university for some intuition research when she caught a female she knew in waking life from  entering her sleeptime dreams by trying to use the identity of two other females she knew in waking life. As her intuition and sleeptime dream celestial guide I asked her to avoid revenge on this female spirit and take it as a sign from her higher self that regardless of how she is publicly perceived that she is just needs to understand and be reminded that she is just as intelligent and capable of soaring to great success in her life just as the female spirit being sly with using other female identities. The 45 year old married female wanted to give this female a piece of her mind and confront her in her sleeptime dreams for even daring to enter what she considers the unbridled and unlimited freedom of her sleeptime worlds many which are heaven based and life on other happy worlds. I had to explain to the 45 year old female that she is going to be happier sooner and for the long term if she lets this female be regardless of how tempting it is to confront her because one of her spirit guides wanted to borrow this sly crafty female to remind the 45 year old female that regardless of how she is judged in waking life that she simply needs to continue to work on the growing of her genius abilities and intuition to increase them in waking life and pretty soon her efforts are going to positively pay of in spades, positive dividends within 11 years or less from now. The sly female was being crafty because she figured out that the female being on to her identity meant that other females who she did the same too would soon also see and notice what she did which would indirectly affect innocent males and females allied with this sly female. Additionally, the sly female intuitively realized that by targeting the 45 year old female that she unexpectedly opened the door for even prettier andor craftier/smarter rivals and females to enter/come in abundant numbers in both of their (the 45 year old married matchmaker female and the sly female)worlds (earth both professional and personal as well as sleeptime). The matchmaker female intuitively understands why this needs to be allowed to happen but the sly female needs more time to accept that memo. In order to heal that karma i showed the 45 year old matchmaker married female a special intuition school inside an orange and purple mountain that also integrates music into the lessons. I also intuitively gave both females a snapshot of how I lived the last year of my most recent earth lifetime in order to help them understand ways to be both a high functioning career person as well as a spiritual person who focuses on creating heaven on earth. I had extreme career success and excitement in my career life such as I was a food service employee who eventually became a cook and then a chef through extensively volunteering for 4 years. I volunteered to help cater food in California, England, Switzerland, Iceland, Germany, Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Canada, France, Italy, Hong Kong, Tokyo Japan, and Singapore. For instance in Virginia, a theater company decided to do a play based on the Give it To You music video by Jordan Knight at a theme park that opened in Virginia Beach Virginia by the year 2091. I was asked to both help set up a party and food for an after party towards the end of the play season-5 months after the play premiered where over 5000 people showed up. I was also part of over 160 men and women who helped to help set up catering and party festivities for over 43 leaders who decided to hold convention events across various parts of the U.S. for museums and libraries over a half mile wide opening across the U.S. complete with train subway stations that connected men and women across various states even rural areas that opened up more opportunities even for men and women who were still trying to save up for cars. In the year 2092, I also had the chance to cater dinners and parties on the side in various parts of Scandinavia as more theme parks and malls opened in this area from the months of July to December. The remaining months I would travel across America to help serve food to cast members and people of various films who were making movies based on universities and cooking across various parts of the U.S. More universities were being built with campgrounds featuring allowing over 5000 people in the warmer U.S. states and outside during the summer time. During the winter time andor in warmer states campgrounds that could hold up to ten thousand people would be built inside buildings either inside andor near malls with the option of camp goers renting aircraft looking trailer parks, traditional trailer parks, tents with inside air conditioning and heating, homes plus more types of campground instructions. The aircraft carrier looking trailer parks are at least a half mile wide and are cheaper than the others to deal with competition that also comes from private businesses in modest socio income neighborhoods who experienced a business boom from also starting campground businesses because of the number of businesses that also proliferated there. However, on a positive note demand for chefs, cooks, and food service employees went up in these communities as many campgoers wanted food cooked for them as they enjoy the camping experience and activities that have also proliferated in great numbers such as various writing, psychic development, even various other types of classes such as art appreciation and other types of classes pertaining to resources of the community and so much more. For instance, a campground in College Park Maryland that can hold up to 9000 people offers 525 different classes, a campground in Virginia Beach Virginia that can hold up to 11000 people offers up to 900 classes, and a newly build campground in Mclean Virginia near the Tysons Corner Center mall that can hold up to 8800 people offers 1000 different classes and 70 different activities such as storytelling retreats, cooking contest camps, and travel exhibition fair conventions retreats where countries from around the world feature virtual reality centers for campgoers-the Iceland, Canada, Washington State from the addition of a 2 mile museum, France, and Scotland from the addition of a 2 mile Harry Potter museum were among the popular campground centers just inside the camp. The campgrounds are often at least 5 miles long andor greater to allow campgoers to pay more for privacy. The things I can tell you from what I have seen would make multiple early 2000s R rated movies seem tame and even some of the scenes I have scene of two consenting adults engaged in certain acts across the campground also tame because of who they are. What Do I Mean by this before I conclude this session because one of my male celestial spirit guides has a book for me to look at pertaining to some of the culinary festivals and people I am to inspire as a male celestial spirit guide; Well, the last six months of my life I had the exciting opportunity to help set up a reenactment You Make Me Feel by Annagrace complete dance scene and all inside one of the campgrounds at a location within the U.S. I must keep discreet partially also because that same day the Bon Appetit music video by Katy Perry reenactment took place within the same camp and both events employed over 500 people and involved over 48 people in both reenactments. I had to go back to my car to get some money to try some food from a tree shaped eatery that opened within this particular camp during the intermission of Bon Appetit and You Make Me Feel when I saw a popular female celebrity hugging a tree in one of the more popular yet at the same time more private campground areas, it was less the hugging of the tree that was the shocking part, it was more the identity of the famous celebrity that I saw pressing himself up behind her and yes I looked away before I could see more because I had just seen him pictured with a 49 year old U.S. Navy Captain daughter of a popular U.S. Navy Master Chief  (E-9)less than 2 hours before as the wife of the famous celebrity male pressing himself against the celebrity female holding the tree. They were doing their renewal of vows at this camp having been successfully married for over 22 years. Granted her husband was not bound by the same rules as his wife because he is a well liked and popular civilian who works in the culinary industry. However, I preferred to mind my own business during my most recent earth lifetime after seeing this more than just because of my career reputation yet also for practical, intuitive, and wise reasons. Resources Storytelling Idea for me To try by September 2, 2018 andor soonerCreative fiction storytelling ideaA Chef andor Cook in the Afterlife shares the fun they had also catering dinners and parties on the sideThe year is 2142 and they are training to be a spirit guide to some employees in the culinary industry in the areas of Scandinavia for the first 6 months of the year January to June, and certain regions in America July to December. (CNN) Like many others, I was startled to learn that President Donald Trump was resuming his campaign barnstorming in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Startled that he was hitting the road again in the middle of a pandemic, startled that he had picked the place where a massacre of African Americans occurred (and was covered up) 99 years ago, startled that he initially decided to do this on Juneteenth — June 19, the holiday celebrating the end of slavery.
Tumblr media
And then I was startled that he backed down and delayed the rally by a day.
I will let others examine Trump’s cruelty in stoking racial divisiveness at such a historical flashpoint. Let others comment on his flippant disregard of public health experts as he ridicules mask wearers as unmanly of PC for caring about keeping themselves and others safe from Covid-19.
Instead, I will focus on the remarkable idiocy of staging a large indoor public gathering in Tulsa just now.
Tulsa may not be the single worst place in the US to have a mask-free and liability-free rally, though the just identified Whirlpool plant outbreak there may place it in the running.
Indeed, cases are going up sharply in Tulsa County ( from 7-day rolling average of 13.6 cases to 53.37 cases for most recent two weeks) signaling substantial community transmission. The disease appears disproportionately concentrated among Hispanics who constitute 13% of the population but 27% of the Covid-19 cases.
Furthermore, Tulsa is near the border of several states; Trump’s rally is likely to draw from these areas as well. Over in Arkansas, four counties at the Oklahoma border — Benton, Washington (home of Fayetteville), Crawford, and Sebastian (home of Fort Smith) — have experienced sharply increasing case rates in the last two weeks.
This is likely due to the concentration of meatpacking plants in the area, Nationally, these areas have been connected to Covid-19 transmission due to the tight quarters in processing lines and other areas in busy plants. Tyson Foods, the second largest meatpacking company in the US, is headquartered in Springdale, Arkansas, which straddles Benton and Washington Counties. It is a mere 100 miles from Tulsa.
Tulsa also is a few hours down the road from the southwest corner of Missouri. Jasper (home of Joplin), McDonald and Newton Counties each have gone from almost no cases two weeks ago to more than five cases daily per county — in Jasper’s case, nearly 10 ( again, rolling 7-day average ). This has led local authorities to reinstitute some precautions.
The source of the increase is not known, though adjacent Barry County features a chicken meatpacking plant that has seen its first two cases. As we have witnessed repeatedly, today’s two cases may presage tomorrow’s frantic headline.
So, from a strict public health perspective, the selection of Tulsa is a terrible decision. So why the choice? Yes, Tulsa is an extremely conservative city with wonderful cheeseburgers and a deluxe golf course, as well as a city where he has found enthusiastic support at past rallies, but this is true of many cities in the South. Is the choice really just another manifestation of Brutalist politics?
As a native Oklahoman, I have a theory: Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts and the hazy world of faith healing. I know this topic quite well. As a kid, on Sunday mornings, my brothers and I used to watch Oral Roberts on television. Our Hebrew Sunday School started at 10 a.m., so we killed time in the early hours watching the faith healing shows till it was time to go listen to the rabbi.
Importantly, this was before Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker and the other preachers with high production values crowded out the field. The Oral Roberts shows then were grainy and uncertain with a jittery camera and fluctuating sound that made them strangely sincere.
Watching, my brothers and I felt confusion and awe, wondering if they were kidding or if they were actors or if they were insane or if they maybe were being cured — I mean it seemed so convincing in its own way. Rows of people looking up, believing and eager and happy despite (or because of) the scene’s basic lack of credibility. They shrieked and clapped as Oral Roberts’ touch and prayer healed person after person.
Which brings us to now and the Trump rallies. For me, the most unsettling feature as he gloats and preens his hour upon the stage is the hypnotic connection between him and his crowd. Because these are the very faces I saw on my Sunday morning TV — those of people who are witnessing an incredible miracle.
Tulsa therefore is the perfect place for the President to resume his campaign. Not only does he get a groveling crowd and a chance to cruelly wink at the city’s racist past but because he is guaranteed something he can’t find any place else: an arena full of people raised on the exhilarating lunacy of a giant tent revival.

Judge Rules False Advertising Lawsuit Against Sanderson Poultry CAFO Will Proceed
There's overwhelming evidence showing that antibiotic use in livestock is driving the rise in antibiotic resistance, and many poultry producers — including Tyson Foods,1 Perdue2 and Pilgrim's Pride — have taken steps to curb antibiotic use in their live poultry production.
In recent years, a number of grocery and restaurant chains have also vowed to stop buying and selling chicken raised with antibiotics. Examples include Whole Foods Market, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Panera Bread and even McDonald's.
Six of the largest school districts in the U.S. (New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami-Dade County and Orlando County) have also switched to antibiotic-free chicken in their cafeterias.
In contrast, Sanderson Farms,3 the third-largest poultry producer in the U.S., has stood firm against the tide of calls to reduce antibiotic use, vowing to continue using the drugs in their chickens, going so far as to use it as a selling point,4,5 while simultaneously advertising their chicken as "100% Natural."
A lawsuit filed against the company last year, charging Sanderson Farms with false advertising, is now moving forward. At the same time, Sanderson has announced it will discontinue using antibiotics deemed important for human health for disease prevention purposes in their production — a radical change in stance that shows public pressure is paying off.
For Years, Sanderson Farms Has Refused to Yield to Call for Antibiotic-Free Chicken
Remarkably, Sanderson Farms' CEO Joe Sanderson Jr. has actually gone on record saying antibiotics don't cause antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and that the shift away from antibiotics is nothing more than a marketing ploy to justify higher prices.6
Lampkin Butts, president and chief operating officer of Sanderson Farms, has also stated "There is not any credible science that leads us to believe we're causing antibiotic resistance in humans."7 In a 2016 press release, the company said:8
"While Sanderson Farms recognizes that antibiotic resistance is an issue that must be taken seriously, many industry experts agree the issue is related to the overuse and over-prescription of antibiotics in humans, and more closely linked to medical institutions such as hospitals and nursing homes, rather than agricultural processes that have been in place for decades."
All of this despite ample amounts of research demonstrating the very real dangers of agricultural antibiotic use. Sanderson has also attempted to confuse people by pointing out that no commercially sold chicken — whether treated with antibiotics or not — will contain antibiotics by the time you buy it since the antibiotics must be stopped in time before slaughter to ensure the drugs are no longer in the animals' system.
However, this doesn't address the actual concerns about antibiotic use in chickens, because even if the antibiotics are no longer present in the meat, the resistant bacteria are present and they are the primary problem.
When animals are given antibiotics, it promotes drug resistance in the microbes found in and on the animal, and those drug-resistant bacteria can then be spread to those who handle or eat the tainted meat. This is true whether the chicken contains traces of antibiotics or not. So, while eating trace amounts of antibiotics is a concern,9 it's not the most significant one.
How Sanderson Defended Its Continued Use of Antibiotics
In 2015, Food Business News quoted a statement from Sanderson Farms that said:10 "[A]fter doing our homework, we do not plan to withdraw antibiotics from our program, and there are three main reasons.
1. Animal welfare — "We feel like we need to take care of the animals in our care … There's one thing that you cannot take care of if you don't use antibiotics and that is enteritis in the chicken... Particularly when there's no evidence whatsoever that using these antibiotics really does cause antibiotic resistant bacteria."
2. Sustainability and environmental responsibility — "It's going to take more chicken houses, more electricity, more water, more acres of corn and more acres of soybeans ... So you're going to have to grow these chickens longer and use all that to achieve the same market weight."
3. Food safety — "We have all been busting our behinds to reduce the microbiology loads, the microorganism loads, on these chickens coming to the plants. And everybody knows what happened in Europe when they took antibiotics away.
All those loads went up on the chicken. So you're talking food safety. You take antibiotics out, and you're going to have more campylobacter, more salmonella ..."
Sanderson's stance clearly flies in the face of science. If you cause antibiotic resistance to develop in the animals, you're inevitably causing it in humans. Recent research11 has even linked drug-resistant infections in more 100 people to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in puppies given antibiotics prophylactically!
Lance Price, head of George Washington University's Antibiotic Resistance Action Center, called the findings "shocking," saying,12 "This is an important study that's shining a light on something that we need to spend more time on." According to the authors of the report:
"Outbreak isolates were resistant by antibiotic susceptibility testing to all antibiotics commonly used to treat Campylobacter infections. This outbreak demonstrates that puppies can be a source of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter infections in humans, warranting a closer look at antimicrobial use in the commercial dog industry."
Drug-Resistant Bacteria in and on Food Can Have Very Real Impact on Human Health
A 2015 mortality and morbidity report13 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed just how difficult it's been to curb these pathogenic bacteria, with prevalence of some types of drug-resistant bacteria falling while others are taking over in their stead.
In 2014 alone, more than 19,540 Americans contracted confirmed drug-resistant infections from food, and 71 of them died as a result. A report commissioned by U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron estimates that by 2050 antibiotic resistance will have killed 300 million people; the annual global death toll reaching 10 million.14
In November 2017, a report15 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also revealed the number of Americans infected with multidrug-resistant Salmonella via contaminated food is on the rise, increasing from 9 percent in 2014 to 12 percent in 2015, and poultry is a primary source of these infections.
According to the FDA, the Salmonella was resistant to as many as four first-line antibiotics. So, for Sanderson to claim that antibiotic use in their poultry production has no bearing on human health is a shameful denial of scientific facts.
Tests Reveal Sanderson's 'All-Natural' Chicken Is Anything But
Adding insult to injury, Sanderson Farms advertises their chicken as 100 percent natural, its slogan being that the only thing in their chicken is chicken.16 However, last summer, tests conducted by the National Residue Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service revealed a number of questionable and potentially hazardous drugs in Sanderson's chicken, including but not limited to:
Ketamine (a hallucinogenic party drug)
Prednisone (a steroid)
Ketoprofen (an anti-inflammatory)
Penicillin (for which the residue regulatory limit is zero)
The synthetic growth hormone melengestrol acetate and the beta agonist ractopamine — two substances banned in poultry production
Sanderson Sued Over Their Use of '100% Natural' Claim
In response to these findings, Center for Food Safety and Friends of the Earth filed a lawsuit against Sanderson June 22, 2017, alleging the company's "100% Natural" claim is false and misleading, as testing reveals their chickens contain human and veterinary antibiotics, tranquilizers, growth hormones, steroids and pesticides.17
The plaintiffs seek "accounting of profits, injunctive relief, corrective advertising and attorney's fees." At the time, a representative for the Organic Consumers Association said,18 "Sanderson's advertising claims are egregiously misleading to consumers, and unfair to competitors. The organic and free-range poultry sector would be growing much more rapidly if consumers knew the truth about Sanderson's products and false advertising."
Since its filing last year, the lawsuit has been dismissed twice. It turns out the third time was the charm. Meat + Poultry recently reported19 Sanderson's motion to dismiss the case, filed for the third time, was denied and the case will finally move forward. Kari Hamerschlag, deputy director of Food and Agriculture at Friends of the Earth, commented on the judge's decision:20
"After years of misleading the public and denying the public health risks associated with overuse of antibiotics in animal production, we welcome the judges' decision to allow our lawsuit against Sanderson Farms to continue."
 Meat + Poultry further reports:21
"Sanderson argued that the plaintiffs' allegations were insufficient to support the litigation, and that the plaintiffs cannot challenge the company's '100% Natural' slogan without considering the full context of an advertisement in which the slogan is used.
But U.S. District Court Judge Richard Seeborg disagreed, writing '… Review, to the contrary, is limited to the four corners of a specific webpage at issue. No authority suggests a reasonable consumer is expected to search a company's entire website (or certainly all of a company's statements across all forms of advertisements) to find all possible disclaimers.
This is not akin to disclaimers being adjacent to the challenged statements. Although the reasonable consumer standard demands that a plaintiff must show 'more than a mere possibility' that a challenged advertisement might conceivably mislead a few consumers … it does not ask they be private investigators as defendant appears to suggest.'
Writing about Sanderson's 'Bob and Dale' commercials, Seeborg wrote: 'By criticizing its competitor's advertising as misleading to consumers, Sanderson's commercial is likely to mislead reasonable consumers into believing that Sanderson products were no different than its competitors who never used antibiotics in their chicken production.
Plaintiffs have sufficiently alleged Sanderson's actions are likely to mislead reasonable consumers to believe Sanderson's products are the same as competitors that never administer antibiotics during their production, for which a reasonable consumer is willing to pay a premium.'"
Years of Public Pressure on Sanderson Farms Is Paying Off
In May 2016, I urged you to pressure Sanderson Farms to come to its senses and join other major poultry producers in taking proactive steps to reduce its antibiotic use. Earlier this year, investors also started applying pressure, urging Sanderson Farms to reconsider their routine use of the drugs.
According to Reuters,22 a proposal to end the use of medically important antibiotics for disease prevention in chickens "received the support of 43 percent of votes cast at the company's annual meeting," held February 15, 2018. That's 13 percent higher than a similar proposal presented in 2017, when only 30 percent of investors voted to end the company's use of antibiotics.
It now seems all this pressure is finally starting to pay off. November 30, 2018, Sanderson announced23,24 it will discontinue two antibiotics deemed "medically important for humans for disease prevention" by March 1, 2019. The antibiotics in question are gentamicin (used in chicks) and virginiamycin (added to chicken feed).
According to Sanderson's press release,25 "The change follows the completion of an independent study the Company commissioned earlier this year on its antibiotics program for its live operations."
While the company-commissioned study "found no misuse of antibiotics at Sanderson Farms or other deficiencies in its program," the advisory board concluded that "[a] move by [Sanderson Farms] to a system where nonmedically important antibiotics . . . can be used for prevention, and medically important antibiotics can be used for treatment and control of disease, could represent a responsible compromise to better preserve efficacy of antibiotics important for human health, while also avoiding the adverse impacts … on chicken health and welfare."
For clarity, Sanderson will still use antibiotics to treat and control disease. It is not a blanket elimination of antibiotics from their production; they just won't use these two medically necessary antibiotics for the prevention of disease. Still, it's a small step in the right direction.
Rebecca Spector, west coast director at Center for Food Safety, commented on the judge's ruling to proceed with their lawsuit, and on Sanderson's decision to stop using medically important antibiotics:26
"We are pleased that this lawsuit can now move forward and believe that Sanderson Farms is taking a good first step toward eliminating the use of medically important antibiotic use in livestock production.
We hope Sanderson will utilize a third-party certifier to verify these production practices so that consumers can be assured that these chickens were raised without routine use of antibiotics."
Tell Sanderson What You Think of Their 100% Natural Claim
Sanderson Farms is the lone holdout for routine antibiotic use in poultry production. Considering they're the third largest poultry producer in the U.S., they can have a big impact on antibiotic-resistant disease and human health. While it's great news that the lawsuit against the company is moving forward, you can still push for change by contacting Joe Sanderson directly, to let him know that antibiotic-free does indeed matter.
You can use their online Contact Page to write them an email or, better yet, call them at 1-800-844-4030, or write a letter to:

Strategies to Protect Yourself and Limit Spread of Drug-Resistant Bacteria
For years, experts have warned we may soon be at a point where virtually all antibiotics fail, and once that happens, it will be devastating to modern medicine. What can you do to minimize your risk? Three key recommendations that can help reduce your risk for antibiotic-resistant infections include:
Avoiding antibiotics unless your infection is severe enough to warrant it
Staying out of hospitals as much as possible — Treatment using medical scopes is particularly risky.27 Also remember that antibiotics do not work for viral infections such as cold or flu
Buying only organic or biodynamic grass fed meats and animal products — Remember nearly all meat served in restaurants and on planes are raised in factory farms and therefore more prone to contamination with potentially drug-resistant bacteria
The following practical in-home suggestions will also reduce your risk:
1. Avoid antibacterial household products such as antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers and wipes, as these promote antibiotic resistance by allowing the strongest bacteria to survive and thrive in your home.
2. Properly wash your hands with warm water and plain soap, to prevent the spread of bacteria — Be particularly mindful of washing your hands and kitchen surfaces after handling raw meats, as about half of all meat sold in American grocery stores is likely to be contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. Avoid antibiotic soaps that typically have dangerous chemicals like triclosan.
3. Take commonsense precautions in the kitchen — Kitchens are notorious breeding grounds for disease-causing bacteria, courtesy of contaminated meat products, including antibiotic-resistant strains of E-coli. To avoid cross-contamination between foods in your kitchen, adhere to the following recommendations:
• Use a designated cutting board, preferably wood, not plastic, for raw meat and poultry, and never use this board for other food preparation, such as cutting up vegetables. Color coding your cutting boards is a simple way to distinguish between them.
• To sanitize your cutting board, use hot water and detergent. Simply wiping it off with a rag will not destroy the bacteria. Coconut oil can be used to clean, treat and sanitize your wooden cutting boards. It's loaded with lauric acid that has potent antimicrobial actions. The fats will also help condition the wood.
• For an inexpensive, safe and effective kitchen counter and cutting board sanitizer, use 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Keep each liquid in a separate spray bottle, and then spray the surface with one, followed by the other, and wipe off.

CANTLON'S CORNER: WOLF PACK OFF SEASON VOLUME 19
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT -  This is the final look at hockey news until The Hartford Wolf Pack opens training camp. TRAVERSE CITY TOURNAMENT The roster for the New York Rangers that will compete in the 2018 Traverse City tournament is set. The annual prospects tournament that's held in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or the "UPEE," as its known, will feature prospects from eight NHL teams. The Detroit Red Wings hosted tourney runs from September 7th until the 11th. For the Rangers, this is their 12th straight appearance in the tournament, which was almost postponed this year because of renovations being done on the arena. There are two divisions in the tournament named after legendary Red Wings players. The Rangers will play in the Ted Lindsay division which features Detroit, the Dallas Stars, and, the Minnesota Wild. The other division is named after Gordie Howe and prospects from the St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Columbus Blue Jackets will battle it out. This is the 20th year of the tournament. The games are played in the Centre Ice Arena. When the Rangers unveiled their roster, it had ten players on it who spent either all of last season or part of it in Hartford. Leading the charge on the ice will be forwards Lias Andersson, Filip Chytil, and wearing the "C" for the second prospects tournament in a row will be, Ty Ronning. There are other familiar forward names. Gilbert Fontaine is expected to take a stronger role in the offense this fall. Dawson Leedahl is on the roster and then there are two collegians who signed with the team in the offseason and had late-season auditions in Hartford last spring. They are Drew Melanson from Boston University, where he played under new Rangers head coach, David Quinn, and Justin Salvaggio from the UNH Wildcats (HE). On the backline will be the Rangers' highly-regarded prospect, Ryan Lindgren. He played ten games at the end of the season after leaving Minnesota (Big 10). Lastly, there's defensive-minded defenseman Brandon Crawley. The rest of the newcomers include some highly thought of talent acquired in trades or were drafted. Up front, is Brett Howden who was acquired from Tampa Bay in the trade for ex-Wolf Pack duo Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller. Two European free agent signees include Sweden's Mikael Lindqvist, and Finnish native, Ville Meskanen. Tim Gettinger from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL) starts his first pro camp. Two draft picks from June include the Swiss-born, Nico Gross (Oshawa OHL), who was just one of two 17-year-olds who played in last year’s WJC (World Junior Championship). The other was the first overall draft pick by Buffalo, Sweden’s Rasmus Dahlin. The other draftee is defenseman Joey Keane (Barrie Colts OHL). On defense, Sean Day, a Ranger #1 pick two years ago, arrives for his first camp. Libor Hajak was acquired in the Tampa Bay trade. He went to the Memorial Cup final with Regina (WHL) where he was coached by ex-Wolf Pack championship coach, John Paddock, plus former UCONN defenseman and captain Derek Pratt. He signed in the offseason with the Rangers new Double AA affiliate, the Maine (Portland) Mariners. Tyson Helgeson, who played four games at the end of the year, will be there but is heading to Royal Military College in Calgary (CWUAA) after the tourney. In goal, Chris Nell returns for his second tournament after playing for three teams last year. His battery mate has a familiar last name. He's Jeremy Brodeur, the son of the NHL's recently named Hall-Of-Famer, Marty Brodeur. Brodeur the younger, played for the Allen (TX) Americans last year. His father recently left St. Louis where he was an Assistant GM. He's returned to the New Jersey Devils where he will head the team’s business development department. PLAYERS & COACHES MOVEMENT PLUS HOCKEY NEWS Dan DeSalvo becomes the 17th member of last season's Hartford Wolf Pack roster to sign elsewhere. DeSalvo inks an AHL deal with the Cleveland Monsters. Another ex-Sound Tiger defenseman, Jesse Graham, signs with the Utica Comets. Ex-Pack, Tanner Glass, who split last year between Stockton and Calgary, signs with GHC Bordeaux (France-FREL) for next season. He is the 74th AHL’er to sign for Europe this season. Ex-Pack, and New York Ranger, Ryan “Hollywood” Hollweg has been forced to retire due to a knee injury incurred while playing for HC Plzen (Pilsener) of the Czech Republic Elite League (CEL). It was announced the by the team's GM/Head coach and former Ranger and HC Plzen teammate, Martin Straka. Hollweg played six seasons in the Czech Republic and returned last season after a year off from the knee injury, but despite a contract renewal for this season, the injury’s effects stayed with him. In Hollweg's last pro season, he played 41 games with two goals, amassing just four points, and 87 PIM. Ex-Pack, Josef Balej, leaves Medvescak Zagreb (Croatia-AEHL) to MaHK Zlina (Slovakia-SLEL) Brandon DeFazio, the ex-Sound Tiger, and son of former Nighthawk, Dean DeFazio, goes from Kunlun (China-KHL) to Lukko Rauma (Finland-FEL) Another ex-Sound Tiger defenseman, Chris Lee, officially retires from Metallurg Magnitogorsk (Russia-KHL) and saw his number 4 retired. Adrian Gajor, from Plainville, CT, and last played for the Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack, signs with Cracovia Krakow (Poland-PZIHL). Nick Lukko, a Salisbury Prep grad, signs a one-year AHL deal with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Jarrid Priviters (Gunnery Prep) departs the University of Vermont (HE) and who played a few games with Manchester (ECHL) after his college season ended, has signed with Greenville (ECHL). Ex-Pack, Desmond Bergin, who played in two games on emergency recalls with the Wolf Pack last year, re-signs with Adirondack (ECHL). Former UCONN Husky, Brian Morgan, re-signs with Reading (ECHL). He split last year between Pensacola (ECHL) and Reading, Ryan Obuchowski, the former Yale Bulldog, signs again with Toledo (ECHL). Devin Buffalo goes from Dartmouth College (ECACHL) to Greenville (ECHL). Trey Phillips goes from the University of Vermont (HE) to Jacksonville (ECHL) while Demico Hannoun of Northern Michigan (NCHC), leaves early and signs with Indy (ECHL). A Division III player heads to Europe in Tim Santopaolo. He goes from Aurora University (NCHA) to Svegs IK (Sweden Division-2). That makes 197 Division I players who have signed North American pro deals and a grand total of 261 collegiate players have signed North American and European deals. UMASS-Amherst (HE) gets a grad school transfer in Jake Pritchard from St. Lawrence (ECACHL). Julian Pacliero becomes the new assistant coach with UMASS-Lowell (HE). Joe Howe leaves Denver University (NCHC) and takes an assistant coach's position with the University of Alaska (WCHA). Another former Husky, Joona Kunnas, was released in training camp from HC Mulhouse Scorpions (France-FREL) and signed with HC Anglet. Ex-Sound Tiger, Tobias Stephan, has gone from EV Zug (Switzerland-LNA) to HC Lausanne (Switzerland-LNA)  where he signed a three-year deal. Adam Jakopin, the cousin of former Wolf Pack and Beast of New Haven, John Jakopin, goes from Lindenwood University (NAIA), a college club hockey program, to HK Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia-AEHL). Nick Hale, of Salisbury Prep, is a Yale University (ECACHL) commit in 2019-20. He will play this season for the Brooks (AB) Bandits (AJHL) DJ King, the son of ex-Whaler Derek King, leaves the US National Development Team playing in the USHL, to play Canadian major junior with the London Knights (OHL). He has dual citizenship and is eligible to play for either of the two country's WJC team in December. Two more sons of Whalers have entered the organized hockey ranks. Geoff Sanderson’s two boys will be playing US College hockey in the near future. Ben Sanderson from the Okotoks Oilers (AJHL) has committed to Colorado College (NCHC) in 2019-20. His youngest son, Jake, goes from the Canadian prep program at The Edge School (CSSHL) to the US National Development U-17 Team this year. That team plays out of Plymouth, MI. He has given a commitment to North Dakota (Big 10) for 2020-21. A very well-written piece from Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times concerning Jerry Bruckheimer, who along with David Bonderman, is on course to bring the NHL to Seattle. The article stated that it looks like a November presentation to the NHL Board Of Governors (BOG) and likely a December BOG vote on their expansion franchise application. If approved, they will become the 32nd NHL team. That should jibe well with the fact that by that time that vote comes, renovations on the Seattle Key Arena will have begun. Bruckheimer also discussed placing a USHL American Junior A franchise in the new building. The USHL is primarily situated in the American Midwest with no Western state teams at all. While building your brand and the sport in the American Northwest is good, he failed to acknowledge the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds, who have been in the city and the greater Seattle area (now in Kent, WA south of Seattle) for 33 years. The Thunderbirds have built a very strong brand name of their own and have helped grow the sport of hockey at the grassroots level in a city that used to have just an old semi-pro league team in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. There are also three other WHL teams in the state of Washington. One of those three is within an easy driving distance of Seattle. The Everett Silvertips has been in business for 18 years and is North of the city. The Spokane Chiefs have operated for 33 years and are in eastern WA near the Idaho border and a fourth team is in Kennewick, WA near the Oregon border. That team, the Tri-City Americans, have been there for 30 years along with the Portland (OR) Winter Hawks, who make up the US Division of the WHL. The real growth of hockey is currently happening in the American Southwest where Texas, Arizona, and West California, lead the way. Oregon and Washington will try to build upon what has been done over the past 30 plus years in those areas. The NHL has a very important relationship with Canadian major junior hockey and with the governing body, the CHL (Canadian Hockey League). Perhaps some of the BOG will educate Bruckheimer's Seattle Hockey Partners LLC, of that relationship during the courting period. The group needs to be aware and not trample on it during the stampede of euphoria when Seattle gets its NHL team. Read the article HERE. GERLING SCORES CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER AND NAMED MVP The AIHL (Australian Ice Hockey League) Goodall Cup has a new owner, and a former UConn Husky was the hero. The Canberra (CBR) Brave captured their first-ever title winning in overtime after falling short in the final two consecutive years. They have Trevor Gerling to thank for it. At 11:38 of overtime, Gerling was coming as the trailer on the left wing on a three-on-two break. Gerling, in his royal blue uni sporting number 78, was billowing in the back. He took a left-wing drop pass from Wehebe Darge (three assists) and roofed a shot over the right shoulder of Sydney Bears goalie, Anthony Kimlin for their 4-3 title win. The celebration from the packed house was wild at the O’Brien Sports Arena in Melbourne, the yearly hosts of the Grand Final. Ryan Louth had a strong game for Sydney with a goal and two assists. They all came in the second period which allowed the Bears to take a 3-2 lead into the third. Gerling was named the tournament MVP and Canberra, Australia’s capital city was celebrating a major title. The semifinal saw the Canberra (CBR) Brave with Gerling, the league's co-leading scorer with 67 points in 24 regular games played, against the Melbourne Mustangs. The Brave won decisively 5-1 with Gerling scoring two goals and had an assist. Then the Perth Thunder where shut down by the Sydney Bears 3-0 in the other semifinal. CBR set a new AIHL regular season points record in their short season league with 72 points. Gerling was tied for the league's scoring lead with Perth’s Pier-Oliver Grandmaison with 67 points. However, Grandmaison led the league with 43 assists to go along with 34 goals including a hat-trick in the last game of the regular season against the Melbourne Ice in a 6-2 victory. Cheshire’s Rob Malloy and his Newcastle Northstars were knocked out of their chance to capture the fourth and final playoff spot after a 5-4 shootout loss in the second to last game of the season. The game saw Newcastle tally the first two goals in the game and a 3-1 lead in the second period after converting on a five-minute major penalty for a hit to the head. The penalty set off numerous skirmishes for the rest of the period. Newcastle held their lead through the third when Perth mounted a rally to tie the game. Perth won the last game of the year 5-3 to break the tie with 39 seconds in regulation. Malloy finished his sixth AIHL season with 18 assists and 24 points in 25 games. "Not going to lie," said Malloy via e-mail, "I'm pretty happy the season is over. Nothing really worked and it was a pretty frustrating season." He will be involved in international competition when he heads to Queenstown, New Zealand. There he will play in a three-game series next week against the Kiwis where he will catch up with his old pal, Berlin's Adam Blanchette. He will play next year in Serbia for Australia at the IIHF World Championship tournament. Nearby in New Zealand, there is a new Birgel Cup champion. The Southern (Queenstown) Stampede, seeking their fourth straight championship loss to the West Auckland Admirals in a 2-1 championship game win on the road. It was West Auckland’s first ever NZIHL title with Berlin’s Adam Blanchette the team's assistant coaches dream. Read the full article

How Amazon could impact DC-area schools, housing and transportation
Montgomery County, D.C. and Northern Virginia were included on Amazon’s list of 20 sites it would consider for its second headquarters, a project that would bring 50,000 jobs to the region and could generate billions in economic impact. But it…
WASHINGTON — Game-changer. Diversify the region’s economy. Entire region wins.
That’s what the D.C. region’s leaders have been saying about the possibility that Amazon could locate its second headquarters here, bringing with it 50,000 high-paying jobs that could fuel the region’s economy for decades to come.
The possibility is intoxicating. But what if the online retail giant/tech juggernaut actually moved here to the nation’s capital — where housing costs are already high, and commuters suffer some of the nation’s worst congestion daily and have fled the troubled local transit system?
What could the region’s residents expect should Amazon locate here?
Not all 50,000 workers would move here at once, said Stephen Fuller, an economist at George Mason University. Amazon would likely ramp up its staffing a few thousand employees at a time.
That gradual phase-in — possibly over 10 to 15 years — would give local governments time to plan for more seats in classrooms, more housing, and changes to the transportation network, local leaders and planners said.
And not all of those workers would relocate here. Many of them already live and work in the D.C. region and would be snagged away from their existing employers for the chance to work for one of the fastest-growing companies in the world, Fuller said.
“We’re used to adding jobs in large numbers,” he said.
The region has added more jobs than what Amazon has proposed each of the last three years — 56,000 jobs were added to the regional economy in 2017 alone, Fuller said.
That fast growth in jobs has outpaced the housing market, leading to the region’s higher housing prices, Fuller said.
The arrival of Amazon would put pressure on the local housing market. And any pitch to Amazon should include how the region would address housing to ensure an adequate supply for decades to come, he said.
“Part of our proposal has to be how we are going to provide the capacity to guarantee the quality of life they want,” Fuller said. “They want to be in a vibrant community, a region that is going to be viable and attractive for their business for the long haul.”
Housing and schools
The good news is the region is already home to densely populated, walkable, transit-accessible neighborhoods that double as employment and entertainment centers, said Paul DesJardin, a community planning and services director with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. It’s the type of community that Amazon has suggested it is seeking.
Amazon’s vision for its ideal location fits in with the type of housing policy that planners like DesJardin have been pushing for since the late 1990s. He estimates that at least half, but possibly as much as two-thirds, of the region’s future growth will take place in such communities, he said.
These mixed-use communities can be found in places like Bethesda, NoMa, Reston Town Center and Tysons Corner, DesJardin said.
Still, all types of housing and communities would be needed to accommodate the roughly 150,000 people — including spouses and children — that Amazon might eventually draw to the region.
“There would be the need for housing, which is a challenge that we have been working on here at the Council of Governments for many years. We clearly recognize the need for housing at all price points — and not just at the right price point but in the right location,” DesJardin said.
Those future workers would also probably choose to live throughout the region — in addition to those who choose to live near Amazon offices, DesJardin said.
And their children, he said, would also attend schools spread across the region, making it easier for school systems to add seats for those extra students.
As many as 50,000 children could be added to the rosters of area schools, DesJardin said.
Metro and transportation
And then there is Metro.
“This whole thing isn’t going to work if Metro isn’t working,” said Anthony Williams, the former D.C. mayor who now leads the Federal City Council.
The civic group has advocated for Metro reforms, including shrinking its governing board and giving the transit system the ability to borrow money to pay for needed improvements.
“[Amazon] certainly gives this effort a sense of propulsion and urgency it didn’t have before, no question,” Williams said.
But landing a major corporation like an Amazon could also fuel long-range transportation projects like high-speed rail — which would help extend the reach of Amazon employment far beyond the D.C. area, Williams said.
Any changes to the region’s transportation networks would depend on the specific site where Amazon might choose to build. But Amazon has been clear that it expects that location to have transit service, said Tim Canan, who leads the Council of Governments’ data and research for transportation program.
The region will also have to build a transportation network to accommodate the needs of those new workers, regardless of their vehicle choice — bike, car, train or bus, Canan said.
Many of the locations pitched to Amazon are located along Metro lines, including the Shaw-Howard University neighborhood in D.C. and the Fairfax-Loudoun line in Northern Virginia. Montgomery County sites could potentially offer access to both Metro and the future Purple Line.

Maria Destroys Homes, Triggers Flooding In Puerto Rico
A woman covers herself with a plastic bag as she makes her way to work as Hurricane Maria approaches the coast of Bavaro, Dominican Republic, Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017. (AP Photo/Tatiana Fernandez)
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in more than 80 years destroyed hundreds of homes, knocked out power across the entire island and turned some streets into raging rivers Wednesday in an onslaught that could plunge the U.S. territory deeper into financial crisis.
Leaving at least nine people dead in its wake across the Caribbean, Hurricane Maria blew ashore in the morning near the southeast coastal town of Yabucoa as a Category 4 storm with winds of 155 mph (250 kph).
It punished the island of 3.4 million people with life-threatening winds for several hours, the second time in two weeks that Puerto Rico has felt the wrath of a hurricane.
"Once we're able to go outside, we're going to find our island destroyed," warned Abner Gomez, Puerto Rico's emergency management director. "The information we have received is not encouraging. It's a system that has destroyed everything in its path."
There were no immediate reports of any deaths or serious injuries on the island.
As people waited in shelters or took cover inside stairwells, bathrooms and closets, Maria brought down cell towers and power lines, snapped trees, tore off roofs and unloaded at least 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain.
Widespread flooding was reported, with dozens of cars half-submerged in some neighborhoods and many streets turned into rivers. People calling local radio stations reported that doors were being torn off their hinges and a water tank flew away.
Felix Delgado, mayor of the northern coastal city of Catano, told The Associated Press that 80 percent of the 454 homes in a neighborhood known as Juana Matos were destroyed. The fishing community near San Juan Bay was hit with a storm surge of more than 4 feet (1.2 meters), he said.
"Months and months and months and months are going to pass before we can recover from this," he said.
Gov. Ricardo Rossello imposed a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily until Saturday to allow rescue crews and officials to respond to the hurricane's aftermath.
"We are at a critical moment in the effort to help thousands of Puerto Ricans that urgently need aid and to assess the great damage caused by Hurricane Maria," he said. "Maintaining public order will be essential."
As of 5 p.m. EDT, Maria had weakened into a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 mph (175 kph). It was centered just off the northwestern corner of Puerto Rico, moving at 12 mph (19 kph).
It was expected to pass off the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic late Wednesday and Thursday.
Even before the storm, Puerto Rico's electrical grid was crumbling and the island was in dire condition financially.
Puerto Rico is struggling to restructure a portion of its $73 billion debt, and the government has warned it is running out of money as it fights against furloughs and other austerity measures imposed by a federal board overseeing the island's finances.
Rossello urged people to have faith: "We are stronger than any hurricane. Together, we will rebuild."
He asked President Donald Trump to declare the island a disaster zone, a step that would open the way to federal aid.
Many people feared extended power outages would further sink businesses struggling amid a recession that has lasted more than a decade.
"This is going to be a disaster," said Jean Robert Auguste, who owns two French restaurants and sought shelter at a San Juan hotel. "We haven't made any money this month."
More than 11,000 people - and more than 580 pets - were in shelters, authorities said.
Along the island's northern coast, an emergency medical station in the town of Arecibo lost its roof, while communication was severed with several emergency management posts. A hospital and a police station reported broken windows, and a tree fell on an ambulance.
As the storm closed in on the Dominican Republic, about 4,000 tourists in the Bavara-Punta Cana area on the eastern tip of the island were moved to hotels in Santo Domingo, the capital. About 100 flights were canceled and the government suspended school and sent workers home.
"The government has prepared itself for the worst case scenario and so should the people," presidential administrative secretary Jose Ramon Peralta said.
Maria posed no immediate threat to the U.S. mainland. The long-range forecast showed the storm out in the Atlantic Ocean hundreds of miles off the Georgia-South Carolina coast by Monday morning.
Previously a Category 5 with 175 mph (281 kph) winds, Maria hit Puerto Rico as the third-strongest storm to make landfall in the U.S., based on its central pressure. It was even stronger than Hurricane Irma when Irma roared into the Florida Keys earlier this month.
Irma sideswiped Puerto Rico on Sept. 6, causing no deaths or widespread damage on the island but leaving more than 1 million people without electricity. More than 70,000 still had no power as Maria approached.
The last Category 4 hurricane to blow ashore in Puerto Rico was in 1932, and the strongest ever to hit the island was San Felipe in 1928 with winds of 160 mph (250 kph).
As Maria closed in, Trump offered his support via Twitter: "Puerto Rico being hit hard by new monster Hurricane. Be careful, our hearts are with you - will be there to help!"
The storm's center passed near or over St. Croix overnight Tuesday, prompting U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp to warn people to sleep in their street clothes and shoes just in case. St. Croix was largely spared by Irma.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries on St. Croix, but it was still too dangerous Wednesday to venture out and conduct a thorough check, said Nykole Tyson, a spokeswoman at the U.S. Virgin Islands Emergency Operations Center.
On the island of Dominica, which got slammed late Monday, Hartley Henry, an adviser to the prime minister, reported at least seven deaths and a "tremendous loss of housing and public buildings." He said the country was "in a daze," with no electricity and little to no communications.
Dominica's airport and seaports remained closed, and authorities used helicopters to carry emergency food, water and shelter materials to the island, said Ronald Jackson, head of the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency.

Valuable Books I Let Go Friday July 14, 2017
This link pertaining to Valuable Books I Let Go Friday July 14, 2017 is the updated version of the updated dates that a multiple number of the books were originally ordered for those who are curious.First off,to everyone looking at this list, I feel blessed for anyone who takes the time to look at, even just out of curiosity, some of the topics that interest me. The following is a list of books that either have already went to College Park Maryland bookholders or are headed there today within two and a half hours or less of me sharing this listing with others publicly online. I feel blessed to have had theseInformative and creative books, which is partially why I intend to repurchase all of them in Amazon kindleform within the next 42 months or less from this date Friday July 14, 2017. However, I reluctantly admit that I am letting them go for personal reasons despite the fact that I am highly aware that these books listed are a privilege to have which is why I refrain from elaborating more on personal reasons. However, I already put the dates on some of the books that I have already purchased but for the remainder books, I intend to put the dates either later on today andor tomorrow on my googleplus, tumblr, and wordpress profile for personal reasons and time constraint reasons as I intend to leave out of my apartment to drop them off within the next 20 minutes or sooner of me sharing this post on my facebook account. The last three books listed-Fabulosity by Kimora Lee Simmons, College Prowler George Washington University Off the Record 2012 Edition, and Love Ever After by Joy Mitchell Lisker are books that were easier for me to let go as I have previously purchased in Amazon kindleform and annotated as such. Allison Campbell accepted a dream assignment: a visit to the Italian Dolomites to help Hollywood socialite Elle Rose reinvent herself. A guest cottage on the grounds of Elle’s historic castle promises to be a much-needed respite from Allison’s harried life on the Philadelphia Main Line, and the picturesque region, with its sharp peaks, rolling pastures, and medieval churches, is the perfect spot from which to plan her upcoming wedding.
Only this idyllic retreat is anything but peaceful. There are the other visitors—an entourage of back-biting expats and Hollywood VIPs. There’s Elle’s famous rock star father, now a shadowy recluse hovering behind the castle’s closed doors. And then there’s Elle’s erratic behavior. Nothing is as it seems. After a guest plummets to her death from a cliff on the castle grounds, Allison’s trip of a lifetime turns nightmarish—but before she can journey home, Allison must catch a killer.
INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR
What initially got you interested in writing? I was a fairly shy child with an active imagination. I found writing stories, especially about animals, was a great way to express myself and feel less isolated. As I got older and came out of my shell, I never lost that passion for writing.
What genres do you write in? Primarily crime fiction—cozies, traditional mysteries, and thrillers.
What drew you to writing these specific genres? A former agent suggested I write what I love to read, and I’ve long been a rabid fan of mysteries. The left brain/right brain aspect of reading and writing suspense appeals to me. I enjoy creating the characters and building a fictional world, but I also appreciate the puzzle-like challenge of plotting a crime.
Plus, I’ve been obsessed with the concept of justice since childhood. Real crime is gritty. Often the perpetrators aren’t caught and victims and their families never find justice. Crime fiction allows me to try and make sense of what’s too often a cruel world. And in my books at least, the bad people get their comeuppance. Justice is done.
How did you break into the field?
It took lot of hard work, rejection, and persistence. I started out by writing short stories. After my short fiction was eventually picked up by literary journals, I decided to try writing a novel. It took me about two years to write that first book and it (a work of contemporary women’s fiction) caught the attention of an agent but didn’t find a home with a publisher. Feeling frustrated, I switched to writing what I love—mysteries. I was determined to go the traditional route, and so I set out on a new agent search, to no avail. I wrote a second mystery, found an agent (whom I’m still with!), but it was my first mystery, Killer Image, that she sold. During this time period I graduated from law school, accepted a full-time job at a law firm, and gave birth to twins. Moral of my story: if you really want it, keep plodding away.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
First and foremost, I want readers to be entertained. As with many cozy and traditional mystery authors, I pay a lot of attention to character development, setting, and world-building. I hope my readers will come for a visit and decide to stay awhile. I also want them to enjoy a good whodunit. The puzzle element is critical, and it’s always my goal to take readers on a suspenseful ride, with a mystery that’s not easily solved. And if readers walk away touched or inspired, or if they’ve learned something? Well, that would be wonderful too.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I love the process of writing, from experiencing that first spark of an idea to fleshing it out to editing the final product. I also relish connecting with readers. At its core, fiction is about the human condition. It should be evocative, touch on common experiences and emotions. I realized at some point that writers enter into a sort of unspoken contract with readers. We agree to spin a good story, create characters you want to care about; readers agree to invest time and suspend disbelief, at least to a point. (After all, how many murders can really occur in one small town before everyone moves away?)
What do you find most challenging about writing?
The final edits of a novel, especially the last rewrite, when you’re fine tuning language and making sure every word advances the story. It’s hard to let go!
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
First, understand why you want to enter the field. The publishing business is tough. Unlike many careers, you can work hard and be talented and it’s still no guarantee of success. But if you understand that and really want it, if you must write, then my advice is to read, study craft, be humble enough to listen and confident enough to advocate for yourself, and avoid excuses. You’ll find a million reasons not to write. Do it anyway.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I have pretty eclectic taste, but my favorite books are mysteries and thrillers. I also enjoy the classics, women’s fiction, general fiction, and science fiction. Anything, really, if it sounds compelling.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
My husband and I are avid organic gardeners. A few years ago we started an urban vegetable farm on the grounds of a beautiful historic local property. The farm never fully got off the ground because of local zoning issues (very long and frustrating story), but we still “farm” our yard—a third of an acre outside Philadelphia. We produce enough on our small lot to feed ourselves, our family members, and some of the neighbors. While we were disappointed that the farm didn’t work out, it lives on as Washington Acres in my Greenhouse Mystery Series.
