[about kamimura] is an excellent episode not just because of how devastating it is, but because of how it hints towards hasegawa’s unreliability. while talking about how smart and funny kamimura was, he says something very interesting: “it’s like nobody else even talks about you anymore … the fact that i’m the only one who still think about you makes me feel so—”
hasegawa feels as if he’s the only person who still remembers kamimura. that he’s the only person grieving him. but we, the audience, are told time and time again that that’s not true. most evidently, we’re shown that it's false in tamba and hayashi’s student interviews.
when tamba is asked who’d she bring back she—without a single second of hesitation—says kamimura. she claims that she thinks that she misses him. she claims that she felt as though kamimura was practically the only person that she could call her friend. just like how kamimura was hasegawa’s only friend. and we saw how, despite the rough start and constant bickering, tamba and kamimura got along. they were friends, and tamba misses him.
when hayashi is asked about her thoughts on those who’ve died, she ends up saying a lot about kamimura. what’s most interesting here is the fact that a lot of what she says actually mirrors some of hasegawa’s own comments in [about kamimura]. when talking about what they liked about kamimura, they narrow in on the same two traits: he was smart, and he was funny. hell, hasegawa even claimed that he knew no one else found kamimura’s bluntness funny, when hayashi directly contradicts that by saying she loved his snarkiness! she also loved how kamimura made her feel normal—that she could talk about things like bodies with him, without being judged. they were friends, and hayashi misses him.
hasegawa thinks he’s the only person that really misses kamimura, but then we have tamba and hayashi on the record talking about how much they miss him, too. hasegawa makes claims about the others that end up being false, because he’s isolated himself so much and he doesn’t care about them. he only cared about kamimura. he believes he was the only person to have cared about him, when that’s ultimately far from the truth.  it’s also interesting, then, that hasegawa kills hayashi. that he nearly gets away with framing tamba for it. the two people who could understand his grieving the most. the two people that clearly missed kamimura, too. he’s so blinded by his apathy and anger and false beliefs that he never realized that. and that’s such a fascinating aspect of his character. how, for as smart as he is, he’s very often wrong. especially when it comes to other people.

I hate it so much when people mischaracterize Boothill as some sort of heartless cold-blooded bounty hunter who would hurt anyone who got in his way. He's a strong defender of the innocent and weak. He's a Galaxy Ranger who makes sure the evil and wicked receive poetic justice.
Oki long ass reply, my bad:
AAAUUUGGGHHHH SAME i fear IPC propaganda works too well on these ppl although at the same time, I can't fully blame them either, if that makes sense?? The thing is, Boothill has shown time and time again how he actually uses the the IPCs image of him to his advantage and plays into the role of a trigger happy thug (example being when he threatened two NPCs during the 2.6 quest) but when you look at the bigger picture, Boothill only ever acts this way when 1. He's facing off against the IPC or 2. When he thinks his actions will lead to consequences that will have a good outcome for a larger number of ppl.
Furthermore, it's been established throughout his story and the quests he's appeared in that Boothill is a very self-sacrificing character. I'd go as far as to say that he has a very big martyr complex and has a very altruistic mindset. The biggest and clearest example I can find of this is how Boothill sacrifices his organic body to gain a cybernetic one for the purpose of getting revenge and justice (there are other reasons too but these two are the biggest and primary ones). Keep in mind that him becoming a cyborg doesn't even benefit him exactly. While Boothill is a pretty mellow and chill guy, he still has to keep this anger burning in some way to keep himself motivated to continue his revenge and its obvious his mental health has suffered greatly because of this (as well as the tragedy of his home planet but that's a given). Other times when Boothill took the hit for someone else was when he took March 7ths place during that assistanana trial. Anyways, my point is that it's just wrong to see Boothill as someone who's cold blooded when in reality, he's one of the more human characters that we've seen in the game and what is a human if not someone who loves and cares with all their heart?
Also also also !!! The "keeping up with boothill" event showed how Boothill has helped and defended people. He's incited rebellions in planets under the IPCs oppression, donated money to charity and also chased away wrong doers from a bar (my memory is fuzzy on the last one but it was smth along these lines).
All in all, Boothill isn't some cold blooded bounty hunter, duh !! He's meant to be a morally grey vigilante instead. Boothill’s moral compass is incredibly strong to the point where the second he sees someone evil, his very first instinct is to put a bullet into that person (established in 2.6 quest). Furthermore, it's strong to the point where he can end such a person with just a single shot because once you're his target, it's kinda game over for you, shrugs.
To sum up Boothill’s character, you could use the exact same phrase that he uses for Sunday in his voiceline. "The roadway to hell is paved with good intentions." Boothill has pure intentions but it's the way he goes about these intentions that make him so morally grey and more misunderstood.
These are my personal thoughts and analysis on him, my bad if it's a bit jumbled 😓

something i REALLY need people to understand about phasma is her relationship with her armor. specifically her helmet. it is SO important to understanding her as a character and i don't see people acknowledging it enough.
look. i understand gwendoline christie is pretty. and that 1 photo of her without the helmet (for the vanity fair magazine iirc?) is also absolutely gorgeous and it stays stuck in my head. but she would NOT take off her helmet as much as fanon makes her!!
obligatory disclaimer that a lot of this is supported by evidence from the novel and i know some people don't like/disregard it so if you are one of those people this post is not for you lol
so i think the most important thing to start with from the novel is the simple fact that, even when we see her a decade into the past, she is STILL wearing something that covers her face:
She wore her war mask, a rust-red terror of hardened pinniped-skin painted with black slashes and surrounded by scavenged feathers and fur. The eyeholes were covered in fine mesh salvaged from a wreck, making Phasma seem less like a human and more like a nightmare monster.
and she wears this almost constantly. even when trying to reason with her brother, she is described wearing it. this is odd even for the scyre- because these masks are war masks. even phasma's warriors, like siv, torben, carr, and gosta, don't wear them all of the time. not as much as phasma does, at least.
and this attitude persists throughout the novel. not only with her mask, but with the helmets she picks up on the way to brendol's ship. siv describes her to be "ill at ease" when she's without one of them. and even when phasma is seriously injured, her helmet is the first thing she asks for.
but, okay. this is reasonable. phasma was raised in an incredibly hostile environment. parnassos isn't exactly kind to people. and a helmet is one of the most vital pieces of protection. too much damage to your head and you're OUT. whether that be via a brain injury or an attack to your eyes.
so maybe phasma is rational, actually. maybe she's right? maybe all she wants is protection, and she gets anxious when she's without it. she's still on the front lines of a war, too, so it's not like she's had the time or environment to cultivate any other feelings on the topic.
but no, actually. it's not just about protection. not in that sense, at least.
Funny how, even on Parnassos, she didn’t feel comfortable without her helmet. After she had joined the Scyre, she’d embraced their fierce masks and salve paint as her new visage, as a better way to face the world and terrify it, perhaps giving her a slight edge in any battle. Her helmet performed the same service. She’d first put on the fallen stormtrooper’s armor in the middle of this very desert and had never looked back. No one in the First Order knew what her true face looked like, except Brendol. She would remedy that. Soon.
it's also about hiding her face. something that's really, REALLY interesting to me.
see, my take on it is that phasma sees the helmet as an extension of herself in some ways- like the shell of a crab is an extension of the flesh underneath. when that shell is cracked, every soft and squishy bit of tissue is exposed. and phasma doesn't want to be exposed. to be exposed is to be vulnerable, and phasma wouldn't even want to risk vulnerability.
survival at any and all costs.
“No one ever sees her face,” he says softly. “I never have. No one I know has. She has her own quarters, as I do, and never eats with her troops.”
there is one, and i mean exactly ONE scene in the novel where she willingly takes off her helmet in her FO era (i think her need to cover her face got even worse after parnassos). and it's when she's just stabbed captain cardinal with a knife laced with poison, and she's absolutely certain that he'll die.
“Are you still in there, CD-0922?” she asks. “Still trying to understand how you lost?” “Hypocrite,” he mutters, although it’s an effort. “I’m not a hypocrite just because I don’t believe the same things you believe.” “Liar.” “Yes, and who isn’t? Armitage doesn’t reward honesty. He rewards results.” He coughs, and wetness splatters the inside of his helmet. “Monster.” Instead of answering this accusation, Phasma does the unthinkable: She takes off her helmet.
but immediately after this, she takes off cardinal's helmet, too- she makes them even. to prove a point.
She kicks him, and when he can’t do anything but groan, she kneels and pulls off his helmet, setting both of their helmets side by side like an audience, one shiny silver and one red. “Everyone is a monster,” she says, and her voice is so different without the vocoder.
idk i think it's pretty notable the only person that we know of that she willingly revealed her face to was on the verge of death. she wants no one alive that knows her face- no one that sees her for what she really is, no one that peels back the shell to reveal the weakness inside.
i think phasma is very, very scared.

People acting surprised when a morally grey character is actually morally grey 😲
THIS ….. i feel like a LOT of people consume media under the assumption that morally gray characters are characters who always perfectly tiptoe the line between black and white, and not…… characters who do horrible horrible things but still treat one single person with all the care in the world. or characters who are on the ’good’ side of the story and do good things while also being fully willing to cross any line they’re told to cross. and etc. morally gray characters are complex and can be anywhere on the morality spectrum except right at the very end of either side. they’re not a perfect shade of gray, they just aren’t completely black or completely white. sigh…….

Wicked, the book, feels in theory like something I could really love. Unfortunately, I did read it, and I did not like it.
