Running a blog can sometimes be a tedious process especially if you have other things to do so what i like 2 do is make a posting schedule for certain dates and have my posts organized and ready 2 be posted i have a table spread sheet on my notion of different types of posts and when i posts them also you can utilize the queue feature so you can post without having to forget!!

[ I’m gonna be honest, it took me so long to find out myself! I run discord servers like crazy so I know some hints,

i usually use the widgets I find on Pinterest that match the characters I like, (for example max: ghost, football, and party’s] I use a couple effects to make em match up but the real stuff I use are dividers,

I find my dividers just out on tumblr, or google. And for any of the symbols and fonts I use Google websites and tumblr, here’s some:

And for the ones on tumblr i usally just search aesthetic symbols or like “[color, show, etc] dividers”

I’m not the best at explaining so sorry if this doesn’t make much sense..

I like to map out where things go, like the first part being things about me, my socials, and any tiny details, but for roleplay blogs I put the in character intro first, I prefer keeping it clean and organized but feel free to do whatever layout you think is cute :3 and some of the tags I listed will take you to the things I’m talking bout :D

Hope it's okay to ask how you do all your edits for your photosets (like the instagram pics in your about me) and stuff like banners, etc. I'm just getting started and it's all very confusing to me. hi nonnie!! no i definitely don’t mind you asking!! i had lots of questions when i first started too (honestly i still do)! <33

ok so i do most of my basic banners on canva!! it’s really nice bc they have different layouts/designs you can use & get inspiration from! i get all my photos from pinterest and then just edit them to how i like. and canva has all the animations & things. some of it you have to pay for, but you can do a free trial for 30 days, which i what i did to make one of my themes LMAOOO.

my banners are definitely more basic compared to some other peoples though! so for those, or like the switch graphic in my pinned, i use photoshop. i just use an app i have on my phone, but you might be able to use picsart and canva too for that!

a lot of accounts have some banners/dividers that you can use w/ credit, so if you browse a bit on tumblr, you might find some or get inspiration! also @/cafekitsune has a lot of good resources, definitely check them out!!

& my for instagram pictures, i just looked up a fake instagram template online. and one should pop up that lets you create it! lmk if you aren’t able to find it, and i can look for you! it took me a while to find the one i used for some reason 😭

Hi, thanks for the questions and I’m very happy you like my blog! I’ve been thinking about blogging for quite some time now but didn’t find the right platform until I remembered Tumblr existed. As I explained in my 1890s post, I think there’s not enough information on Chinese fashion history on the Internet so I’d like to fill that gap a bit by sharing my knowledge and observations; even though I’m just an enthusiast and not a professional historian, I hope I can get more people interested in this obscure topic :)

I’m still quite new to Tumblr so I haven’t found so many blogs, but I do follow some other vintage/fashion history blogs. If you’re interested in hanfu/Chinese fashion history please go follow @ziseviolet and @fouryearsofshades as well!! 

China in the beginning of the twentieth century... I think I really appreciate the progressive ideals of that era and the feeling that everything was possible, but also the mix of historical/traditional with modern Western aesthetics (particularly fashion, of course). But frankly I don’t know so much about political history so I’m not really qualified to comment on that.

My entryway to fashion history is actually Costube (historical costumers on Youtube, e.g. Karolina Zebrowska, Bernadette Banner) and European fashion history, particularly the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Maybe that’s why I sometimes have weird takes on Chinese fashion because I learned my methodology there. At that time I was also playing Europa Universalis IV (a historical strategy game set in the 15th-19th centuries) and as a Chinese person of course I played the Ming Dynasty and was very attached to it, so at some point these two interests merged and I started to wonder what clothing in the Ming Dynasty looked like, which is how I discovered hanfu. As I researched more about Ming Dynasty women’s hanfu I realized how much it continued into the Qing Dynasty and the 20th century, so my love for the Ming Dynasty spilled over into these later eras. I then realized how much EASIER it is to research the 20th century because of availability of primary sources (there’s a ton of pictures on Pinterest alone, aside from museum originals), so I decided to go further into that. Of course I still love hanfu and the fashions of the Ming and Qing dynasties, I just know less about them than the early 20th century. I tend to not distinguish between decades or periods, to me they’re all fashion history and equally fascinating, but it’s especially interesting to research 20s and 30s fashion and watch the cringe flapper stereotypes unravel before my eyes haha.

I haven’t really read any books from this period aside from what I was forced to back when I was in the Chinese public school system... I’m not a literature person so again I’m not really qualified to recommend books, but I do love the works of Lu Xun I read when I was younger, his social commentary is really sharp and still relevant today.

I really, really do NOT want to live in that era. Even though progressive movements were gaining momentum, the majority of the Chinese population at the time lived in poverty in the countryside and people were significantly more conservative, superstitious and misogynistic, so as a woman I wouldn’t really have any chance in life unless I was extremely wealthy and lived in the city. Even then there would be countless barriers to success that I wouldn’t need to face in the 21st century. It was a very politically turbulent era with many wars and stuff so life wouldn’t be as peaceful. China was also under partial colonization at the time and I am NOT a fan of white supremacy, so I would really suffer.

Thoughts:

It was interesting to see which pairs and couples my general audience was requesting. By far the two most popular requests where anything to deal with Kyoya (my OTP) and Mori. You wanted my two favorite boys to get some comfort and happy endings and I was happy to supply them. Now that I step back and look at them, I will give you little fun facts or interesting thoughts I had while writing each one (mostly because I think it is interesting how writers explain their process of writing or their opinions on their own writings). The list starts chronologically from first to last fic posted.

1. Bland Cereal & Pregnancy Brain (Mori x Haruhi) 

I imagine that of all the hosts these two will have the closest thing to what Haruhi would deem a normal life. They will make time for each other and always try to check in on each other. If Haruhi wants normal life filled with a steady stream of love then Mori is her guy. I giggled my way through this prompt at Haruhi and her oblivious nature (my favorite quality about her). This prompt took two sittings to complete. The first to write it and second to edit. Overall one of the quicker ones I wrote in this batch.

2. Attorney First, Wife Second (Kyoya x Haruhi)

 This fic is one of my favorites that I have written.  It is also the first posted fic where stuff gets steamy. I was gasping and eeping the whole time writing their steamy elevator interactions. This story took 1 sitting to write, edit, and post.

3. Solemn Tears (Kyoya x Mori)

As stated in the original post this is the first-ever M/M fic I have written. IT WAS SO HARD. Not because it was M/M but because both characters don’t really ever let their guards down long enough for them to cry. Not only that, I really had to dig and analyze what would really push them to the point that they would cry. Have you ever seen two brick walls cry? Cause I sure haven’t! Their dynamic is interesting and I am glad that I got this prompt to stretch my writing skills. Multiple sittings required because I had no idea how I was going to write it.

4. Shrouded Kiss (Kyoya x Haruhi x Tamaki)

Oh, the angst! Out of all the fics posted this one felt the most OOC. My first thought when I received the prompt was, “Kyoya never does anything by accident.” Haruhi was a little OOC in my opinion but that’s because of how Kyoya proposed the idea of finding love. Do I believe what he says about only knowing once you have tried things with different people? No, but there is merit to say that each relationship and person you are with is going to feel different. Some people are just naturally passionate people while others are more subtle with their love. From what I recall this was a pretty easy write and edit.   

5. Obliviously Pregnant (Kyoya x Haruhi)

Haruhi probably couldn’t even surprise Kyoya with a pregnancy even if she tried. She might not have married a doctor but when you marry into a family who is a leader in the medical business nothing will stay a secret for long. On top of that, I am sure that Haruhi is so focused on work that she would actually just convince herself that she is sick rather than being pregnant. Now reader, I know you are curious as to why I decided to bless them with twins. Well, you see…..plot device. That’s really it. Plus, after I asked Google about multiples and pregnancy I was plagued with diaper ads. Note to self, use incognito more often when asking questionable questions.

6. Salmon Side Effects (Tamaki x Haruhi)

This was the first “Free Space” prompt. And I was in the thick of writing and posting. By the time I got to this prompt, I was tired. Not long after I got this prompt I experienced a depressive episode and spent the week slowly crawling out of the pit. I just couldn’t bring myself to work on this fic. I knew I would have to write Tamaki super excited and all I could think about was trying to make it throughout the day without crying. But I got out of the pit and finished it. Multiple sittings needed for completion.

7. Unyielding Devotion (Mori x Haruhi)

I am not sure when it comes to other writers but I cannot read and write fic at the same time. And after binge writing the last few fics I needed a break. I needed to read some fic! One night I was scrolling through FF.Net and decided it was time to start working through my 70+ fics waiting to be read. Picked a fic and I was off to the races (Something Honorable This Way Comes by ilovemori9). It was sweet and wonderful and totally the opposite of a break-up prompt. I think with the break up he was trying to do right by her, wanting her to not be held back by what was required of him. When I first started brainstorming this prompt I was going to have Kyoya lurking in the shadows waiting to take Haruhi as his own but the story wrote itself and it wrote Kyoya out of the story. I think it is better that way.

8. Broken Banner (Mori x Haruhi)

TINY HAMMER! Running joke between @ohshcscenerios and myself. This was such a fun story to write! Once I started I just had to finish. I don’t normally lean towards cute and innocent so it was a nice change of pace. Mori is held in high regard but he is, after all, a high school 3rd year. And he has a soft spot for Haruhi. Also, did you know that Mori is 6’2” while Haruhi is 5’1”? How do you accidentally kiss someone who is a foot taller than you?? So part of the issue in creating this story was how to get their mouths close enough to bump lips. I think the outcome suited the prompt. This was a two sitting story. 

9. Burning Intentions (All Characters)

The final prompt….this prompt I tell you what. I will be honest I loathed this prompt in the beginning. I was utterly at a loss as to how I was going to write this. I opened the doc, stared at the prompt and closed the doc multiple times over the span of a week. It was like that episode of Spongebob where he had to write an essay and he felt like he was doing so much work but all he did was the fancy-looking “The”. I almost gave up on it. I almost posted an apology instead of actually trying to write something. In a last-ditch effort, I pulled up Pinterest and searched the word ‘fire’. And then an idea hit me! I wrote part of it one night and finished it up the next day. This story quickly became a favorite because of the witty banter between the hosts. I was laughing at my own writing. I am now very proud of this story!

Final Thoughts & What’s Next?

Throughout the last 16 days, I have accomplished many things when it comes to writing! I went from only having posted 4 fics to now having 13 fics. Today (1/24/2020) on FF.Net Boundless Opportunities (Kyoya x Haruhi) reached 200+ views. On top of the 11,935 words I have posted I have also written an additional 9,124 words for other projects I am currently working on. That is a grand total of 21,059 words written from January 1-24! In my free time, I also finished The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and am 13 chapters deep with The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. On top of everything else, I created a beta profile! I have done so much this month and I want to thank everyone for their support and kind words! They really do me so much to me!

January has been busy! So I am looking forward to celebrating Freedom February!! I am giving myself permission to do whatever I want in February. I still have 11 more paper books to finish as well as 100+ fanfiction stories waiting patiently waiting to be shown attention. Basically what I am saying is I want to spend more time doing other hobbies as well as work on some of my wips that I have been neglecting since I started this project. 

Speaking of wips I will be spending February obviously working on my Kasanoda x Haruhi fic but also an idea that sprung up into my head this past week produced a very interesting idea for an AU bad boy fic with Hikaru x Haruhi that has some potential to become another multi-chapter story. Too soon to say if anything will come of it but I want to keep my options open!

TL;DR: January was crazy. Lots of writing. Background information for each fic posted from the bingo prompts. A list of January achievements. Don’t expect me to post anything prolific in February. Using my free time to explore hobbies other than writing. Diving headfirst into digital and paperback stories. Hopefully, make progress on my two main unposted projects. Connect to the top networks: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and a lot of other networks.Autopost directly to your social media channels. You can set it to automatically post on all the networks as soon as you hit publish on your blog post!Schedule posts to release at a later date/time.Re-schedule posts. This is a great feature, you can automatically set the system to re-post for you so your content is always rotating.URL shortener.Schedule curated posts (posts from other sources). This for me is a great feature! In my social media plan, I tend to post 1/3 my own posts, 1/3 engagement (questions, quotes, etc) and 1/3 curated content. Other Options When it comes to social media schedulers, there are many options available for all budgets. I'm listing below another two strong schedulers I have tried and found reliable. CoSchedule - offers a headline analyser, I'm a fan of it! But you can find other headline analysers equally good and free. CoSchedule offers a free 15-day trial and prices start at £19/month for the basic plan. Coshedule has integrated reporting, something that is not so good with Blog2Social. Hootsuite - is also free to start and offers good flexibility and curated content too. You start with a free 30-day trial and after that prices start at £25/month. Hootsuite is one of the most used social media schedulers.

Image creation Tools - Best value

Canva - Canva is an image creation software, is also free to join (no trial, free forever). You can use quite a few of its features with the free version. Premium versions have great benefits like automatically re-sizing your images and exporting with a transparent background. You will be able to create almost anything you want in Canva. From logos to business cards, social media banners and quite a few more complex things like ebooks, planners, social media kits, its almost limitless. Once you get the hang of it this tool is very simple to use. You can start with Canva for free here.

Business Idea

If you are good with graphic design, you can start your own business selling online templates. Check out these two sites selling templates made with Canva. thesideblogger.com - want to offer freebies to your audience but don't know where to start? Here you can find a template for almost any freebie you can think of. On top of that, you can get Pinterest and Instagram templates to customise with your own branding colours and fonts. The side blogger also teaches you how to make a business out of it. Conversionminded.com - here you can find many great paid courses, Canva templates for all your social media strategies and a great variety of planners, some free to download. These two sites are great examples of delivering something that people need!

Best for automated image creation

RelayThat - is another great tool for social media image creation. This is a relatively new tool for me and I love it. Why am I showing you two different image creation tools? Because they are quite different in how they work. With Canva you work on creating one image at a time and can resize it (if you have the premium version). With RelayThat you insert your website URL, press the magic import feature and your branding is imported to the site. You chose the image size you want to create out of lots of options and the tool uses your brand colours to populate all the available design templates in one go, then you just need to decide what designs you like best!

This is an example of several different image sizes created based on the one pin I made With two other pin formats showing on the top left and one Instagram suggestion at the bottom right Let's say that you have a post with a title: Must-Have Tools For Strong Social Media Presence. You want to make a Pinterest pin, so select that option from the social image sizes menu. Add your title, your website name, select the image you want to use (they offer over 300,000 stock images) and select one of the almost 200 variations of Pin designs already populated with the basics you inserted. With a few clicks, you adjust your details and the tool generates your pin image and also your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook add, Blogpost Image. It also creates another 20 or so different formats all coordinated. If you don't want all those formats but want 50 pins instead, just select more ready to download templates from the available template.

Specialist tools

Tailwind - if you are active on Pinterest you will love Tailwind! This is a paid tool that allows you to schedule your Pinterest posts (pins). With this tool you can share curated pins too. Share pins with different tribes (similar to group boards) and use loops to keep pins active. I use Tailwind and see good benefits from both the tribes and loop evergreen posts. Why do I use Tailwind for Pinterest and not Blog2Social? I always pin my first Pin manually directly on Pinterest and then use this tool to pin it to other boards. As Pinterest gives me almost 50% of all my traffic, I try to be both careful and consistent with my pinning strategy. This tool is better for that and worth the extra investment. The tool offers an interval option, allowing you to select all relevant boards in one go. You can set it to post at optimal times with an interval of 2, 3, or as many days as you find ideal (2+ days minimum). The system also alerts you if you break any of the rules Pinterest sets for posting, like post the same image twice in the same board in 6 months. These rules are hard to keep track and Tailwind keeps you on track.

Stock Photos - Best value

Unsplash - is a stock image site with free images you can use for almost any purpose including business, they claim to have over 1 million free images available. I regularly submit and use images and they are a great resource to have. If you are a blogger you may want to consider using images that are used less often, so search engines don't get confused about your message, seeing that they have seen the same image associated with different messages. If that is the case, check out this other option.

Best for Content Creators

depositphotos - they open deals a few times a year and for a fee, you have access to a number of downloads. This is an exclusive deal with AppSumo and is discounted from $299.00 to $39.00. I use their images and am always happy when they open these promotions.

Analytics for social media

Analytics are an important part of keeping track of business results. Even a very simple business needs goals and objectives to feed into those goals. The objectives you set for your business should be SMART meaning they should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and, timely (or time-bound). Having good analytics tools will help you measure results and progress. Most social media sites have their own analytics and you can use those to check how your posts are performing in each of the platforms. Sprout Social - is much more than a social media management tool, it rolls social engagement, publishing and analytics all into one efficient tool. It monitors hashtags, brand mentions and content calendar. You can start with a free trial and plan prices from $99/month. If this price tag is not for you there are a few free options for you. Followerwonk - this is a Twitter analytics tool. It helps you learn who your followers are, where they're located, and when they are active. The free version is quite limited but some of the information can be very useful to establish optimal times to post. Overarching and free social media tools are almost nonexistent, so learn to use the analytics available on the platforms you are active and make sure you track progress on a monthly basis. Ultimately, it's important to understand what is working and what is not for your business. Selecting a social media tool that works for you shouldn't be hard work, start with understanding what you can have with each free platform and once you are familiar with the different stats sign up for a free trial with the tool that ticks most boxes for you and your business. Mermaid Clip Art - Free Download

Today we are back with a set of mermaid clip art. Its been way too long since we posted some new clip art so I am hoping to get a few different sets up onto the blog in the next couple of weeks. When directly going to the Too Faced cosmetics sites, the very first thing that pops up is a CTA banner ad entailing of a 20% off discount if you joined the mailers list. It seems as almost every time I visit the too faced website it has fresh content as well as quality content constantly updating the web page with new releases or sales. The colors in the web page are definitely eye catching and correspond with the actual product itself. The webpage is easy to navigate from different categories at the top to choose from. The web page also features updates of guest bloggers and social media stars with how to videos, in my opinion, is a great selling point to entice consumers to buy all products to create certain looks achieved by the special guest. Also encouraging consumers to upload their own pictures to the site, showing their looks from too faced cosmetics. The founders of too faced cosmetics upload every month a new blog keeping their customers completely engaged and up to date. Which I think is a huge value to the site in being very responsive giving a genuine feel, because it is coming straight from the founders themselves.

BLOG 3-SEO Evaluation

Cons:

·      Most common keywords are not appearing in one or more of the meta-tags.

·      Webpage does not contain any H1 headings.

·      5 URL’s that are not SEO friendly

·      The site is not using expires headers for your images.

The First thing I would prioritize is the meta tags. Having the primary keywords appear in the meta-tags will help recognize the topic of the web page to the search engine. The H1 headings will also help signify the relevant topics in the page to the search engines. Expires tag would help speed up the serving of the web pages for users that regularly visit the site and see the same images.

BLOG 4 -Persona

35% would go toward social media. Managing the brand's image through interacting with our customers via the internet will be a huge profit to the company.

25% PPC would benefit us because we have so many other competition in makeup brands. When someone types in “makeup” or “best foundation” hundreds of different brands can surface. Carefully choosing our keywords can set us above the competition.

20% I would invest in SEO. Increasing the website’s viability across search engines to help new customers and other makeup junkies to our site.

15% would be for email and mobile marketing. If we tailor the emails or text messages to the customer's needs it can generate more sales based on products they have already purchased or suggestive items they would be interested in.

5% of banner ads can be good impulse buys that can add up good profit.

BLOG 7-Landing Page

Once entering the Too Faced landing page website it takes you to a subscription landing page. Offering 20% discount on your purchase for subscribing with an email. The navigation bar is very easy to use. Giving an option to shop while breaking down each category by face, lip, eyes, essentials, and sales. Next section invites you to view their new collection. The Brand section gives you the founders story, Too Faces story and their mission statement, and the contact info.

 Last is the Beauty Blog section showing newsletters, how to videos such as Wedding Glam, eyebrows, achieving the perfect highlight, and showing several different looks with their new collections. The color scheme is a soft beautiful pink and gold. The call to action buttons can visibly be seen in hot pink. With the Too Faced logo through-out the website and a privacy policy section creating high trust factors. Assuring that the website is authentic and that Too Faced is committed to protecting the privacy of their customer's personal information. The return policy is clearing explained, their social media presence is very strong with links to their Instagram, Pinterest, twitter, Facebook, and Youtube.

BLOG 8-Social Media

As talked about on the landing page Too Faced social interaction with their customers is very powerful. The beauty community can engage with every social media outlet available today. With over 8 million followers on Instagram and hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and so forth. The Too Faced social media team does an amazing job displaying captivating images of the products and all beauty enthusiast using them with tons of page likes. 

The social media campaign reaches new customers, provides product information, support and collects customer feedback. Too Faced ups their measurements of engagement by encouraging their followers to upload pictures of themselves as a chance to be featured on their main website or social media pages. While studying through each of their social media sites it wasn’t until I went through pictures and a few videos that I had said to myself “I need these products.” Right there and then I realized that Too Faced had completely mastered advertising without a traditional sales pitch. Each video or images of the featured product also link to the site with the words “Shop this look” and "ADD TO BAG.” My only suggestion for the social media content would be to feature different images and videos at different times. So that you don’t see the same exact thing on every social link at the same time.

BLOG 9-Top 5 recommendations to top management of the firm

The first recommendation would be polishing up on B2B sales to hold a strong relationship. Which could result in more featured displays inside stores. Sephora or Ulta, calling more attention to the featured product having it displayed in the front of the store or in the middle of the store with a nice big statement piece. Calling attention in store with the graphics can cause a nice buzz for people who do not shop online. Also housing Too Faced events driving more sales.

On Too Faced’s Instagram account they have a lot of beautiful pictures of makeup enthusiast around the world. However, I would add in teaser videos of very quick 20 second how to videos but attach a youtube link to a full-length video demonstrating from start to finish and ending with a list of products used. Which links directly to the Too Faced site for an easy purchase.

I would also create more content marketing through social media. I would invite for Too Faced users to not only post their pictures with the list of items they used, but I would have them include their story of what empowers them or how they help their community. I feel like this is very engaging and gets to our customers on a personal level.

Again steering into content marketing, I would suggest a beauty podcast. Not just limited to makeup. We would have guest speakers. Such as celebrities revealing their secret beauty regimens. Or physicians discussing mental and physical health. Fitness instructors coaching you with workout ideas and eating more healthy conscious. The objective would be topics that inspire, awaken and embrace every part of your own pretty.

Last I noticed that Too Faced does not use any kind of celebrity advertising or endorsements. I would switch things up to see if there could be an increase in sales; by using a new celebrity each season to advertise and collaborate with to make limited edition collections.

Fourth of July Party Recipes, Ideas, & General Insanity

Every year on Instagram Stories I share photos from our friend’s insanely over-the-top party for the Fourth of July. And each year we gets tons of requests for a post with all the photos and links to the recipes she uses, so we’re finally giving the people what they want. Our friend Justine has been hosting these backyard soirees for years – and the only way to describe them would be: EXTRA. And we love her for it. She and her husband John basically just throw this huge party every year for all of us to gather and hang out with our kids and each other. It’s such a great time of year to get together (not as hard with schedules as things around the holidays for example) and when the party ends, her prep for the following year begins. Just kidding. But maybe not…

Let’s dive right in. Each year she sets up a sun tent and decorates it to create a makeshift photo booth with some fabric, sparkly red tulle, and a banner along the back.

Now lean into your screen and really soak up this next sentence, because the success of a DIY photobooth hinges on this single solitary tip: SHE HAS THE BEST PROPS. Every July there are more of them on the little table off to the side for us to choose from. This year there were wigs and beards in addition to all of the oversized glasses and hats and giant inflatable gloves. She says whenever she sees something on sale after the 4th she grabs it for next year, so that’s how the collection keeps growing.

It should come as no surprise to longtime readers that Justine is the one who, instead of a traditional baby gift, offered to make the cupcakes for our daughter’s 4th birthday party (just a few weeks after our son was born). She turned out the most amazing stack of custom decorated treats. BECAUSE SHE ONLY HAS ONE PARTY MODE AND IT’S BEAST MODE. Which explains why she can’t resist large inflatable presidents to greet guests on the hanging daybed on her back porch, for example.

Yes, all of the kids tackled them and smacked each other with them in the yard. And yes it was hilarious.

She also made this cute wooden sign a few years ago that comes out each July. It says things like “food”, “waterslide”, “drinks”, “photobooth”, etc. Are you thinking “this party is almost like a wedding!” – because if so, you are starting to get it. It has snowballed, so every year she has so many things to break out that feel festive and hilarious and even more over the top than the year before. At this point the party momentum cannot be stopped and can only be appreciated with an Abraham-Lincoln hat-tip, which of course is on the prop table.

Speaking of fun, she always rents a two story waterslide for the kids (and the adults, once we have enough jello shooters) because… well, SHE IS THAT DEDICATED TO FUN. The waterslide really takes things to the next level when you record slow-mo videos of other adults attempting tricks like barrel rolls and flips. Five stars, would recommend.

As for other things to do, there are epic cornhole tournaments – and in case it wasn’t obvious, much like Puffy demands that everyone wear white to his parties, Justine demands that we wear red, white, and blue to her gathering each year. There’s even a series of prizes for certain costume categories (we had a big winner in our family this year when it came to an extremely patriotic swimsuit & towel combo).

This is Justine-the-host’s outfit. THAT’S AT LEAST FIVE HUNDRED FLAIR POINTS, GUYS. She decorated those flip-flips herself with ribbon. I know. Commitment level: 1000.

There’s also a leather sofa in the middle of the grass. Obviously for photo ops and general hanging out. It’s pretty much full of people the entire night long. It also makes for a great place to spectate/heckle the cornhole players.

Justine also does things like rolling silverware in bandanas and tying them with twine BECAUSE THAT’S WHO SHE IS AS A PERSON. She actually confessed to me that each year she has a ton of these left over, so they’re not that high maintenance. Note: her definition of high maintenance might be slightly different than other people’s based on her ALL IN level of party-throwing.

The food is always fun and we actually do a pot luck thing so it’s not too much on Justine & John’s shoulders. We each bring a side dish for everyone to share and meat for our own family for the grill. Also, note the sock and shoe combination here. Just saying. We do not mess around when it comes to our costumes.

Since around 20-30 people come each year, there’s always a giant amount of food – and a lot of it ends up being themed. Blue corn chips with red salsa for example, or this bean dip with little olives and tomatoes to make a flag (it’s just a layer of refried beans, a layer of guacamole, a layer of cheese, and a layer of sour cream with the tomatoes and olives on top).

These mozzarella, basil, and tomato skewers are another example of the good eats that feel sort of themed (the blueberries add some blue, right?). Add some salt and pepper, drizzle them with balsamic glaze, and thank me later ;)

We always bring what I affectionately call “pigs in a blanket,” which I’ve learned are called “Lil’ Smokies” here in Virginia. Still getting used to that name. The kids love them though – they’re always completely gone by the end of the night.

The drinks are also, to borrow a term from Lil’ Wayne: “off the chain.” These are jello shooters, for example – and the cherry is so clever because if you pull the stem it lifts the shooter out of the cup so you can suck it down and remark how amazing the hostess is. Here is a kid-friendly recipe without any alcohol (just add vodka if you want them to be true jello shots).

Justine also made these awesome red, white, and blue smoothies for the kids – all of whom raved about them except for one non-fruit-loving child. Let the record state that cute straws and the little jelly jars are the key to a ridiculous amount of serving flare, so do with that information what you will.

And you can’t have a big ol’ gathering without red, white, and blue margaritas for the grown ups. It should be noted that because I helped in the kitchen, these weren’t as beautiful as they should have been. We think if we added more ice to thicken them that the red, white, and blue layers would have been more distinct. But as Justine’s husband John so eloquently stated, “we were going for margarita speed over margarita perfection.” Here’s the recipe for ya.

One of the biggest reveals of the night (there are usually 3-5 of these surprises because JUSTINE DOES NOT MESS AROUND) were these waffle cones that she had individually decorated with red white and blue melted chocolate and sprinkles. THE KIDS WENT HAM FOR THESE.

Also, I thought her use of the teal blue milk crates was so adorable and asked if she saw that on Pinterest and she said she had been standing in her daughter’s room and looked at them and thought “those would be perfect for my cones!” which floored me. I mean this woman clearly has her own version of Pinterest running in her brain 24/7.

One other thing on the menu that I would definitely highly recommend was this amazing dessert called “Berry Lasagne” that Justine whipped up:

Yes, that’s a white chocolate drizzle that she added right before bringing it out. And let the record state that any party that required me to drizzle white chocolate during the actual party would lead to me breathing into a paper bag in the kitchen, but Justine just has that party expert gene. Here’s the recipe for the berry lasagne, and here’s a shot of it all sliced and served on a patriotic plate:

After all the food and drinks (and competitive watersliding), we gather on the back porch and the patio to watch the fireworks that Justine’s husband John takes a ton of pride in.

Every year they get bigger and more insane (they’re legal here in Virginia for all of the Northerners wondering – I had to get used to that when I moved to VA). There’s always a fire extinguisher nearby and it only had to be used one epic time when the table very slowly caught fire after the fireworks ended.

So that’s Justin & John’s completely over-the-top and SO MUCH FUN annual party. Hope the recipes and photos come in handy for anyone else who is walking around with their own personal Pinterest running through their brain. I always get a little mushy during the fireworks because it’s so rare to get together with friends and family that you love – so it’s such a treat to have these awesomely festive and completely committed friends to get us all in one place to enjoy each other’s company every year.
