In honour of both Black History Month and the UK’s LGBT+ History Month, let’s shine a spotlight on a key figure in Erasure’s brilliant stage shows - Les Child!
Child has had a prolific and storied career, working as a dancer, choreographer, and innovator in the arts. He danced with several groundbreaking troupes throughout the ‘70s and 80s, and also founded some of his own–including House of Child, the UK’s first voguing group. In the ‘80s, he branched out into choreography for music videos, which brought him into pop star circles, and at the dawn of the ‘90s, he set his sights on live tours.
According to his CV on HeadNod Agency, the first tour Child ever choreographed was Erasure’s Wild! Tour (1989-1990). Child was fond of Erasure’s music, and told Private Ear in 1992 that “it makes life a lot easier when it comes to choreographing a show if you enjoy the music”. He would go on to do the choreography for The Tank, the Swan, and the Balloon (1992), Cowboy (1996-1997), and The Erasure Show (2005). Indeed, Child seems to have choreographed more tours for Erasure than for any other band or artist. He also starred in Erasure’s short film “Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde” (2003), and forged an enduring friendship with Andy Bell.
Child’s work with Erasure is really special to me. His choreography is undeniably dazzling on its own, and the dancers deliver it with athleticism and aplomb. But I’d also argue that it adds to the music, making it even better. My favourite example is “Love to Hate You” from The Tank. In this performance--which Bell introduces as “the gayest of gay tangos”--two pairs grace the stage: one male-male, one female-female. By the end of the song, they’ve swapped partners multiple times. (Check out video 1 and video 2 to see this in action.) When I first saw this, I was charmed. It was unexpected, yet it seemed natural: a nod to the sexual fluidity that runs through Erasure’s music and art. I feel that Child truly got Erasure, knew what made them “them”, and made it sparkle.

We hear it every year, year after year…”This is going to be the worst year for ticks yet.” It seems to get worse every year. If this is unfamiliar to you, you might be fortunate enough to live in an area where the concern is not so prevalent. In the northeastern United States, however, you’d be hard pressed to find a group that hasn’t expressed concern.
Why ticks?
These tiny vile creatures spread several diseases, most commonly Lyme Disease. Since May is Lyme Disease Prevention Month let’s work to understand HOW Lyme is transmitted. We’ll also explore some steps we can take to keep ourselves and our animals (horses, dogs, cats) safe.
In 2017 nearly 30,000 cases of Lyme disease were diagnosed and another 13,000 were suspected as “probable.” Most of these cases originated in the northeastern United States as seen in the map below thanks to CDC.gov. The chart following shows the upward trend of Lyme disease throughout the years.
Cases confirmed in the United States 2017. Courtesy of CDC.gov
Cases of Lyme Disease in the United States 1997-2017 courtesy of CDC.gov
Ticks are arachnids, or eight-legged creatures, that thrive in deep grass and wooded areas. Often areas where our horses enjoy, of course. There are several different species of tick and they all have different life cycles, feeding habits, and habitats.
What is a bit more alarming is a new tick to the United States called the Asian Long-horned tick, which can reproduce without a mate. The video below talks briefly about it.
youtube
Most of the time when we think of ticks we think of the most common threat; the deer tick/black-legged tick. The deer tick is often the source of Lyme disease along with several other illnesses including Anaplasmosis, Powassan, and Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever. Blade suffered from anaplasmosis in 2017 (Blade’s Got the Blues and Equine Affaire).
The deer tick begins its life cycle as an egg laid by the females in springtime. By summer the larva emerges from its egg and waits for a host. Hosts are typically birds and small rodents.
Freshly hatched ticks they are free of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Only when they feed on their hosts do they pick up the pathogens. In the United States the bacteria transmitted is either Borrelia burgdorferi or Borrelia mayonii. Across the pond in Europe and Asia you are more likely to find Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii.
The birds and rodents that feed tick larva carry these species of bacteria without illness; they are simply hosts. By fall the tick falls from its host and enters its nymph stage. The nymphs are barely visible to the human eye. These critters lay dormant through the winter but by April/May they begin to emerge again. They wait for a host to walk by so they can catch a ride. Using their barbed mouth parts, the tick digs in for a blood meal. The pathogen inside the tick enters the salivary glands and can be released through the tick’s saliva. These hosts include us and our loved ones. Nymphs are often the cause of Lyme disease since they are small and difficult to spot.
By fall the nymphs become adults looking for new hosts. At 45°F they seek wooded areas to survive the winter. When they emerge again in spring they continue to look for hosts and mate. A single female tick can lay 3000 eggs! After a two-year life cycle the new batch of larva hatches and begins the cycle again.
As you can see, we can become infected by both the nymphs and the adult ticks. The more hosts carrying the bacteria, the more likely it is to spread to us.
The hallmark sign of Lyme disease is the bullseye, a circular rash around the bite. Symptoms may appear weeks after the bite. This appears in a majority of cases…but what of our equine friends?
Horses suffering from Lyme Disease may have subtle symptoms. They might be off mentally, emotionally, and physically. They may be sore or lame, lethargic, grumpy, neurological, or have a low-grade fever. Lyme is known to mimic other issues so a vet is critical in ruling out other problems. Lyme will also elude testing, as there are many cases of Lyme that appear negative on test results.
I’m even learning that Lyme can be a cause for some headshaking in horses. Headshaking is not commonly listed as a symptom nor have any of my vets over the past two years suggested the possibility. This is, however, something I plan on looking into after this research. As you may know from past articles, Blade developed headshaking about 18 months ago (shortly after his run with anaplasmosis). Though our tests were negative it could have been one of those instances with a false negative.
Once Lyme has been diagnosed (or suspected) there are a few treatment options.
The most common treatment is called Doxycycline, an ingestable antibiotic often given in a powdered form with food. A similar drug is called Naxcel. Despite their popularity with horse-owners they only happen to be 50% effective.
The most effective treatment is more pricey… a study in 2005 reported 100% effectiveness. The reoccurrence levels were considerably lower in the study as well. What’s this treatment you ask? Daily intravenous oxytetracycline. My vet once called it the “gold standard.” The reason most horse-owners don’t opt for this treatment is the administration. Having a vet visit and administer the shot every day for 3-5 days is pricey so most horse owners use the Doxy.
If I remember correctly I paid somewhere around $450 for three daily IVs of Oxytet for Blade.
So what are some ways we can prevent this problem from happening in the first place? As the Benjamin Franklin saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Lyme vaccines for horses are not available yet. Studies have shown some effectiveness using canine vaccines on ponies, but it is still far too early. There are no studies out (yet) showing the safety of this methodology. Until we have vaccines we are tasked with the footwork that we should be doing anyway.
Checking for ticks often is the first thing you should be doing. Check yourself, check your dogs, check your cats, check your horses. It takes 24 hours for a biting tick to transmit the disease. I tend to find most ticks under the cheek, the neck, the chest, and the barrel (especially up behind the back legs).
There are a lot of Facebook experts who have tips, tricks, and endless opinions on tick removal. The simplest thing you can do is use a good pair of tweezers and pull the tick up slowly and steadily so you remove the whole bug. Another useful tool can be found in most pharmacies and pet stores. The tick twister. This little hooklike tool comes in a couple sizes (at least mine had 3 sizes in the package). When you find a tick you slide the bug between the openings at the end so it becomes wedged. From there twist and pull gently. I have successfully removed many ticks using this tool and I love it. After a tick is removed you may choose to save it in a plastic bag for testing. Apply alcohol or antibiotic ointment to the affected bite wound to be safe.
Since ticks prefer wooded areas, you can try to stay out of these areas. That’s easier said than done if you enjoy the outdoors.
Keeping the grass and pasture mowed can be helpful.
Removing piles of leaves and moist ground cover is an excellent way to prevent ticks. That leftover hay pile? Let’s get rid of it!
Keeping down the rodent population could be useful. Non-poison rodent traps, barn cats, and proper food storage go a long way.
Chickens and guinea hens love to eat ticks!
DEET and permethrins are of course some good chemicals that have proven efficacy for the prevention of ticks and other pests. Some people use them others don’t. That’s your choice to make. There are many products on the market including fly sprays, spot-on applications, and even wipes.
I have had mediocre success with feed through pest repellant. The more I use it the less effective it seems to be (though the first year seemed to make a big difference).
If you are opposed to chemicals more research has been finding useful essential oils that are as effective as the CDC recommended products. The key to the best product is perfecting the volatility ratio of oils. High volatility essential oils disperse into the air faster. This helps by preventing ticks from attaching in the first place. Lower volatility oils will disperse into the air more slowly and have a longer lasting effect. Check out the Tisserand Institute’s “Tick Talk” (link below) for more information on these oils. I’ve also shared with you their formulation for DIY tick repellant.

The thought of ticks and the disease they spread makes my head hurt. Lyme disease is rarely fatal but it does lead to some frustrating and debilitating complications.
Other diseases like Powassan are rarer but a lot more deadly; this virus is associated with brain swelling. Here in New York we are already beginning to hear reports of Powassan virus. One group has found 25-50% of deer in the Adirondacks are positive for the virus and it only takes 15 minutes for the tick to transmit the virus to humans.
Whether Lyme, Anaplasmosis, or Powassan we can take steps to stay healthy and prevent ticks from biting. It may take some time and effort but it’s completely worth it.
What are some of the methods you use to keep ticks at bay?

Moon neglected and beat his own children. How did it affect them?
Hyo Jin Moon: “I know my Father. He made me, so we are just like each other. We can kill one another.”
At Pledge Service, November 1994 at Belvedere (video link below)
Shamanism in the Unification Church While church members generally consider themselves to be Christian, the church’s rituals and practices share much with Korean shamanism. Practices such as ancestor veneration / liberation from evil spirits, spiritual channeling, sacrifices, songs, drumming, rhythmic movements and beatings are all common in Korean shamanism and culture.
The Master Speaks These questions and answers have been transcribed from tapes made during our Leader’s sessions with members and guests at Centers throughout the United States during his trip in March and April 1965.
Question: Should we keep our physical children with us?
Sun Myung Moon: Yes, of course. You cannot leave them on the street. You must protect them. If they do not obey you, you can even strike them. In the satanic world, if you beat children it is from your temper and is sin. But now you know the absolute good, and if they do not obey you can bring them by force. It will be good for them after all. In our group, some people have neglected their children and devoted themselves completely to witnessing. This has happened because, if you are not restored, your children will perish automatically. If you don’t find three spiritual children, how can your physical children benefit? In that sense, your problem is more urgent. For this reason, some parents have neglected their children. After they are blessed they ... and take them back.
Sun Myung Moon: “From today on, if you meet anybody around you who criticizes or judges True Family because of what is happening right now, you can hit them in the mouth. If anyone writes a wrong letter to True Family you can break their arm.” February 24, 1996, Sao Paolo, Brazil
Sun Myung Moon: “Your mission is only the territory of your relatives. How much easier it is for you compared to True Father’s course. You have absolutely no excuse. Those who have the confidence to fulfill your mission of accomplishing 3.6 [million] couples Blessing this year, show your hands. (Applause) Father wants Reverend Kwak to keep a baseball bat in his hand all the time and if he sees anyone neglecting their mission in this regard then he can freely use it. Particularly those who are sleeping and hiding, Reverend Kwak’s baseball bat will fall upon you at any time.” February 13, 1997, New Yorker Hotel, New York
Hyun Jin Preston Moon interviewed in September 2010
Question: Do you have any episodes you remember while fishing with your father? Preston: “When I was a teenager, I remember fishing with my father one day on the cold Alaskan sea. I was in an accident. While my father was focused on fishing with other people at the stern of a small boat, I was fishing at the front of the boat and fell into the sea. The water temperature of the Alaskan sea is so cold that most people die from a heart attack after about 15 minutes in the water. But nobody noticed that I had fallen overboard! I tied the thick fishing line used for catching King Salmons around my arm and desperately moved toward the boat, barely surviving. At that time, my father continued fishing without batting an eye. I was shivering with cold but he kept me with him for the rest of the fishing trip and then we returned back to the harbor.”
Question: He was very strict in how he raised you. Preston: “(Laughter) Such training from my father made me who I am today. My father wanted his children to become better than him and wanted them to grow through challenges.”Trained during his youth on the rough sea, today when Hyun Jin Moon goes to the Alaska mountains to hunt, he will stay there for one or two weeks. Sometimes the guide becomes exhausted and goes back early. In the deep mountains, after hitting the target, he skins the animal himself, carves the meat and puts it all into his backpack. Then with a heavy load, he gladly completes the tough journey back that could cover several miles.”
Hyung Jin Sean Moon: “You know Father, he would slap me. Not only slap, he would smack me every day. Punch me. You know, he would smack these guys all the time. You know, and these guys took it every day… These guys have to be like ironman, they have to be superhuman, iron butt training. So don’t criticize them so quickly and easily. That’s not a sign of maturity… I saw them get smacked so many times… We got the most beatings.” September 23, 2012, New York
In Jin Tatiana Moon (extract from Nansook Hong’s book, In The Shadow Of The Moons: My Life In The Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s Family, page 101) “In Jin disapproved of my friendship with her sister [Un Jin] but she could be nice to me herself when it suited her purpose. She came to me once, asking to borrow some clothes so she could sneak out that night. Her own room was next to her parents’ suite in the mansion and she did not want to risk running into Father. Why not? I asked. She told me that recently she had come into her room on tiptoe about 4:00 A.M. It was still dark. She thought she was in the clear, when she saw Father’s shadow in a chair across the room.
As Sun Myung Moon struck her over and over again, his daughter told me, he insisted he was hitting her out of love. It was not her first beating at Father’s hands. She said she wished she had the courage to go to the police and have Sun Myung Moon arrested for child abuse. I lent her my best blue jeans and a white angora sweater and tried to hide how shocked I was by her story.
As much as anything about my new life in the True Family, the antipathy between the Moon children and their parents stunned me. Early on, I was disabused of the idea that this was a warm and loving family.”
In Jin Tatiana Moon spoke in 2014: 5:15 “So …as angry as my father was for the first ten years that I lived up in Boston. He would scream at me for 3 or 4 hours every time I came back home to wish him happy birthday, or to wish him happy God’s Day. You know, Father was extremely angry. In a way I am hoping that my marriage, and the dissolution of my marriage thereafter, can be a good example of what not to do to our kids, and what not to do to the future blessed couples that aren’t …
“Forcing people into marriage is not right. Political marriages is not right, you know. What I’ve been pushed to do which is really simply nothing other than institutional rape is not right. With two people standing outside your door because they’re afraid you’re going to run away. That is not right. And not wanting to deal with the consequences of your actions of forcing two people into marriage is not right. And not having support and not being nurturing while your child is trying to deal with what you crammed down their throat is not right either…
7:00 “Shocking as it was for my mother to hear my story, the last 30 years of marriage which I have never spoken to her about. You know, she had to learn too. A lot of people think that, well In Jin was just acting on her own behalf and she is just doing whatever she wants. No, I am not doing whatever I want…” LINK
In the early 1980’s there was a gym at East Garden where a martial arts expert came to teach karate to the older sons. One day Hak Ja Han came there when Heung Jin, Kook Jin and Hyun Jin were training. She said “Let two of them fight until they are bloody.” The martial arts teacher was not happy about this and resigned shortly afterwards.
Nansook Hong and Un Jin Moon were both beaten by their husbands: VIDEO of them being interviewed on ‘60 Minutes’ Mike Wallace: “Whenever she told Rev. and Mrs Moon about the beatings, Nansook says, they blamed her.” Nansook Hong: “I was not ideal wife for Hyo Jin that is why he would behave in a certain way towards me, and I was not a good member of their family… so also it was my fate…” MW: “Who told you that? Mrs Moon or …” NSH: “Both, both of them, yes. And it was my fate that I have to endure these things.” Un Jin Moon: “Sounds familiar” MW: “Nansook is getting support from a surprising source, one of Rev. Moon’s daughters, Un Jin Moon. She told me her parents blamed her too when she was abused by her husband [Jin-hun Park, son of ‘Tiger’ Park]. MW: Did he beat you?” UJM: “Yes” MW: “And you would tell your folks?” UJM: “Yes” MW: “And they would say…” UJM: “I deserved it” MW: “Un Jin Moon is estranged from her parents, but she has never criticized them in public before. …” [Apparently Jin-hun Park used to drink.]
Nansook Hong: “Sun Myung Moon seemed to take pleasure in the reports that filtered back to East Garden of the beatings being administered by the Black Heung Jin. He would laugh raucously if someone out of favor had been dealt an especially hard blow.” (pages 150-153)
MLP: “Having grown up around them, I can confirm that when the Moons wanted something, it was there. Thus, they learned to take and only to take. They learned to brow beat, insult, demean and ultimately to physically intimidate those around them. But they never learned to give and never learned basic empathy for those that provided them all their untold wealth.”
Sam Park: “My mother’s involvement with Rev. Moon started in 1953 when, at the age of 17 years old, he forced himself upon her and took her virginity. At the time [pause] my father said that because my mother was destined to be his eternal bride or the “True Mother” in UC parlance, he had to have sexual relations with her to reverse what the … Forgive me because I am going to bring up UC / Moonie terms. Some of you might know it if you follow the church, but a lot of you won’t – just indulge me because there are a lot of Unificationists out there who may see this and it will probably help them. My father said to my mother that – he basically raped her – that he had to have sexual relations with her to reverse what the Archangel Lucifer did to the young Eve. Rev. Moon taught that the biblical Eve was seduced by the Archangel Lucifer when she was 17 years old which was the real reason for the Fall of Man as described in the Bible. That is how Moonies think about the Fall of Man.” LINK
It has been rumored that Won-pil Kim was beaten up by Sun Myung Moon and hospitalized… Moon was rumored to have used a baseball bat at leader’s meetings at East Garden and in Korea. There are rumors of Moon violence at meetings in Alaska. There are many witnesses, but they are keeping quiet. Perhaps that explains some of Moon’s power over his minions.
Young-oon Kim: Washington, D.C. After dinner Miss Kim began to speak: “Our Leader might be coming… If our preparation is not adequate it will take many years to clear from his mind our laxity. Our preparation must be thorough. Some of us remember his last visit when some were not completely prepared. We remember his anger at that time. If he comes and sees lack of preparation this time, his anger will be much greater and much longer-lasting.” New Age Frontiers June 1967 pages 14 and 15 LINK
Nansook Hong: In 1992 she went on a fundraising trip to Japan with the True Mother. Before the return journey, she says: “I was given $20,000 in two packs of crisp new bills. I hid them beneath the tray in my make-up case. I knew that smuggling was illegal, but I believed that the followers of Sun Myung Moon answered to higher laws.” Much of the Moon money was given to Hyo Jin to fuel his cocaine and alcohol binges. pages 171-175
Hyo Jin, she says, would frequently beat her. “I once tried to flush his cocaine down the toilet. He beat me so severely I thought he would kill the baby in my womb. He made me sweep up the spilled white powder from the bathroom floor even as he continued to beat me. Later Hyo Jin would offer a religious justification for beating half-senseless a woman seven months pregnant. He was teaching me to be humble in the presence of the son of the Messiah.” Her children, she says, were her only reason to live. “My main goal was to raise them decently.” Her children would ask her: “Why do we have a bad dad?”” pages 180, 184 and elsewhere
Here is another description of Hyo Jin Moon: “Most of what I’ve been told comes from people who were around him earlier, like Floyd Christofferson at the Manhattan Center studios, Leon Harris who used to watch his back when he went into the bad parts of town to buy cocaine, and others. He injured a friend of mine with a karate kick to the ribs in the New Yorker in the late 80s, he beat up another student at UTS, he smacked Ben Lorentzen around when he first went to work with him in the studio, he beat up second gens who I could name because I know their parents, he held a loaded handgun to Peter Kim’s head at East Garden and threatened to pull the trigger, he shot up a passing freight train with an automatic weapon, and he threatened to kill numerous other people including Nansook (and her unborn child)…
At a meeting in Kodiak in 1986 Hyo Jin assaulted Joachim Becker who was in his 40s. Hyo Jin got up from his seat, flung the older church brother on to the ground and hit him in the ribs. You could literally hear his ribs crack. The bewildered brother lay on the ground wheezing and clutching the side of his rib cage. Needless to say the meeting ended abruptly. Later Joachim went to the hospital and had a wrap around beige bandage wrapped around his chest to mend a few of his fractured ribs.
Those are just some examples of his out-of-control behaviour. I have good friends who worked on the ground staff at Belvedere and East Garden who used to hide when he was in the vicinity, in case he was coked up and in a bad mood. Security staff were on duty to keep an eye on Nansook when he went into one of his periodic rages. It was True Father himself who said that Satan walked in and out of Hyo Jin freely. Yet there was no direct intervention to get him into rehab when all the indicators were there, and he wasn’t taken out of position until the damage was done. Nor did he get sent to Cheongpyeong to have his evil spirits removed like ordinary mortals.
These were all eye-witness reports from people who were around him daily. And this pattern of misbehaviour persisted from his teens, when he was expelled from Hackley High for shooting at other students with a BB gun, until Nansook called time on their marriage because she realised she might end up dead, or one of their kids might die in an accident while handling one of the sixty or more guns that he kept unsecured about the old house at East Garden, which included a cache under the bed in the master bedroom, some loaded and some of those with the safety off.” LINK
Hak Ja Han wants followers to venerate Hyo Jin Moon who had many serious and well-known problems. Here his photo is seen on the altar in the main prayer hall at Cheongpyeong. Hak Ja Han also holds an annual music festival in honor of Hyo Jin.
It was 1989. The BCs used to gather every Sunday in Tarrytown. We loved being together. If Hyo Jin hyungnim was around we would follow him around and do whatever he wanted to do. He had a volatile temper and was often abusive but we were told that it was because we didn’t understand his and God’s heart. He was teaching us God’s heart. One day he had us lined up and he started raving and ranting waving his gun. Suddenly he stopped. We had our heads bowed but I looked up. He had his gun pointed at Jin Seung Eu’s head and pulled the trigger. The bullet went into the wall behind Jin Seung Eu, 2 inches from his head. LINK
Hyo Jin was allowed to get away with his abusive behavior because there was no oversight and nobody but Reverend Moon himself had the authority to stop him. This was the type of dysfunctional and nepotistic system that Moon himself had set up. LINK
VIDEO Sunday November 1994 at 5am at Belvedere 0:05 Let’s welcome Hyo Jin Hyo Jin, the oldest son, is taking the place of his father this Sunday 0:40 Do you respect me? Fuck you!!! You don’t know me. … Don’t stop because I will kill you. I … Father and Mother and they know that …. miserable and I’m miserable. 1:44 “I know my Father. He made me, so we are just like each other. We can kill one another.” 3:26 “I don’t like this place, you know. I am standing here being judged by you motherfuckers. What the fuck do you judge me by?”
Hyo Jin Moon is rumored to have held a loaded handgun to Peter Kim’s head at East Garden and threatened to pull the trigger. Why?
Donna Orme Collins: “As I grew older, I witnessed frightening pre-marriage ceremonies in which the bride and groom-to-be beat each other with bats to rid themselves of evil. I had also learned that the lives of Moon’s followers were utterly controlled by him – and that he was the parent I was supposed to rely on.” LINK
Sun Myung Moon bullied Second Gen teenagers in New York
Testimony of a participant at Moon’s July 18, 2011 event in Nigeria: “I saw something I shouldn’t have seen during Hoondokhoe on the 18th July. Maybe Father sensed that the spiritual standard was not good enough, or for whatever reason it may have been, True Father slapped Hyung Jin Nim in his face in front of all the members. And after that he slapped Yeon Ah Nim, Hyung Jin Nim’s wife, in the face too. A very sudden unexpected situation. After that Father continued talking for 2 hours, but the African members were shocked to the core by what they had just witnessed. Some thought that Hyung Jin Nim’s couple paid indemnity for the failure of the members to properly attend True Parents.”
Mariah Blake: “Speaking on the Senate floor in July 1993, Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) urged fellow lawmakers to celebrate True Parents Day—a holiday honoring the Moons—in the name of family values. “It is in the interest of society and government to adopt policies strengthening and sustaining fathers and mothers,” he said. The following year, Congress passed a bill designating Parents Day a national holiday.
While lawmakers were lauding Moon’s family values message, his own family was unraveling. In 1998, his ex-daughter-in-law, Nansook Hong, published a devastating expose of Moon family life, which claimed that her husband, Steve, blew huge sums of church money on cocaine and beat her during her pregnancy. Hong and Moon’s estranged daughter, Un Jin, went on 60 Minutes, where they presented a litany of allegations about drugs, sex, and corruption inside Moon’s church. They also disclosed that Moon had an illegitimate son named ‘Sammy.’” from Mother Jones (November 2013) LINK
Extra-Sacramental Rituals of the Family Federation for World Peace After the Blessing ceremony, for the First Generation there is an “Indemnity Stick ceremony” where the couples all have to beat their spouse’s buttocks as hard as they can with a baseball bat or a heavy stick. The purpose of this is to pay a price for the sin of Adam and Eve by hitting the sexual area. It is also meant as the one time a couple is allowed to physically assault one another, after which all disputes should be settled verbally. This ceremony is public, and is not a private experience. Members have been hospitalized with spinal injuries because of this ceremony. LINK

The Incident at the New Yorker Hotel: Hyun Jin stopped talking – there was a familiar uncomfortable silence…
Hyun Jin Moon’s assault on Tim Folzenlogen
Kook Jin Moon – an elder American second generation: “Later on, there was the fight club. It was [Kook Jin] Justin’s idea and he held sessions at his parents’ compound in Seoul. “There were five or six of us, and we’d fight without gloves until we were bloody,” Porter says. Justin officiated and fought, but he didn’t always play by the rules. As one fight was starting, he unleashed a head kick. “This guy Isaac was just waiting for the fight to begin, and Justin leaped up and did this crazy swinging kick,” Porter remembers. “It landed in the guy’s face, and it looked like the guy was airborne forever, like he was levitating, until he finally dropped to the floor. It was cool. But it wasn’t an emotional thing with [Justin]. He was very calculated about his violence. He had to be the best.” Portfolio magazine LINK

Both of us looked like … and we looked at each other [thinking] “Are you seeing this?, Are you seeing this?”” “Han Mother did an occult ritual … She has become a pagan.”

Social Media & Website
Cover photo: https://www.whatmobile.net/Opinion/article/5-little-known-social-media-marketing-tips-that-will-take-your-marketing-to-new-heights
Social Media
The world of social media has grown hugely since its introduction to the internet. The first social media platform that was available was a site called Six Degrees in 1997. The boom of social media platform began in the early part of the 2000's introducing platforms like LinkedIn and Myspace. Yes, I know! Remember MySpace!?
More platforms began to arise, and by 2006 saw the introduction of other well-known platforms like; YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Spotify, Pinterest and Tumblr, to name but a few. (https://smallbiztrends.com/2013/05/the-complete-history-of-social-media-infographic.html#:~:text=The%20first%20recognizable%20social%20media,sensation%20that's%20still%20popular%20today)
In a professional sense, social media's idea is to help promote business and showcase creative content; such as photography, music and fitness, etc. As a sound designer/composer, I'm looking to use the following social platforms; SoundCloud, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn.
SoundCloud is an excellent platform for sharing music, sound files and even podcasts. My current SoundCloud pages have been set-up but are lacking content and my updated branding.
I have researched some great examples of the use of SoundCloud within the field of sound design.
Cinematic Sound Design are a UK based sound design production studio that has created work for major TV and film commercials and share work examples from sound design pieces to musical composition: (https://soundcloud.com/cinematic-sound-design)
Another great use of SoundCloud is by the Tone Benders Podcast team. Timothy Muirhead, Rene Coronado and Teresa Morrow. They regularly host podcasts episodes invaluable to those seeking a career involved in audio editing, field recording, post-production for games, TV and film. They discuss a wide variety of design techniques, game audio, case studies on current and past examples of work within the industry, and so much more! If you are not aware of these podcasts, do so, and make yourself aware now: (https://soundcloud.com/tonebenders-podcast).
Finally, another excellent source of SoundCloud uses inspiration from A Sound Effect’s podcast series: (https://soundcloud.com/a-sound-effect). A Sound Effect run one of the most popular sites for sound effects/sound design on the internet today.
I am currently planning to prepare a monthly podcast series, where I’ll be talking all things sound/audio/production. The first episode from the podcast I’ll be discussing how creativity has affected artists, musicians, sound designers and composers alike throughout the turmoil of a pandemic driven 2020. Having a warm and inviting presence, (albeit on a podcast) will lend itself well to viewers being able to begin connecting with me, and so I can start genuinely gaining a following. I’ll be using the podcast to talk about software, case studies and cool projects to share with my audience. I’ll also be using SoundCloud to share some creative field recording examples. So, people can hear the wonder and intricacies of creative field recording and sound design before being applied or edited and placed within a project.
YouTube is another excellent platform for posting videos about your kit or hardware and even software tutorials. My current YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCceMTWCvRtkGwUBPQz2sEYA?view_as=subscriber ) lacks some serious content update, and update of the branding imagery.
I’m looking to start planning a series of tutorials/how-to’s to start with field recording and sound design and share some mini-documentaries of projects in progress. Having a ‘behind-the-scenes’ approach to displaying your work will help potential future employers see what goes in all of the hard work before getting to a finished artefact.
My favourite on the list of YouTube Sound Design based channels is, Akash Thakkar ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCr1pdADQRWMks2checkZxBA ). He provides some incredibly fun to learn tutorials, but most importantly (for me) is the amount of invaluable career advice on entering the industry.
When approaching the potential use of Instagram, I wanted to find some good examples of how other sound designers/composers have used Instagram. I did come across a fascinating blog article.
Five sound design Instagram accounts you should follow. Which gives insight into some of the top sound Design related Instagram accounts to follow : (https://dougieevans.com/2018/02/28/5-sound-design-instagram-accounts-you-should-follow/).
Excellent use of sharing work in progress and a ‘behind-the-scenes’ aesthetic, comes from Robert Dudzic (https://www.instagram.com/robertdudzic/ ) excellent sound design work for movies, TV and games and radio.
Finally, we come to LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a professional networking platform. You can connect with like-minded sound designers, but more broadly, you can connect with other production companies, directors, and other organisations that require a sound designer or composer's services. My current LinkedIn profile is basic and has a lot of brand updating that is needed. I will also continue to research the best use of this particular social media platform as I am yet to comprehend its benefits fully.
A LinkedIn profile is more than a small photo of yourself and a job title. The more information you can give about yourself is better for future career employability prospects. Not only that but having an attention-grabbing intro to the profile will make people want to discover more about who you are. Not only this, but having frequent and update to date links of my best work is another factor too bare in mind when sharing content on LinkedIn. Gaining things like client feedback and connecting with groups, are other areas that will improve your Linked reputability.
Below are the headers for all of my social media platforms. All with updated branding!!! I'm working hard to get some fabulous material for each of these, and I shall be posting as regularly as possible.
WEBSITE
Below is my current website. I built this within Adobe Dreamweaver CC, but there are several issues with its functionality at present. The email form does not work, the load animation hangs, and there are many discrepancies with the website's metadata. Not to mention the layout could do with a revamp.
While the Dreamweaver method isn't all that difficult when developing a website, I found I was spending too much time getting silly little things to work and not focusing on the website's content. So, I sought other methods to create a website. Beforehand, I did make a collection of websites that gave me inspiration for my website.
https://bashooka.com/inspiration/25-cool-website-designs-using-neon-gradients/
https://www.webfx.com/blog/web-design/dark-websites/
https://speckyboy.com/modern-minimal-web-design/
With my research complete, the next step for me was to sketch out the wireframing. Wireframing the layout makes my job incredibly easier when placing content during the production of the website.
Now there are a wealth of website builders out there. Below is a list of some online website builders that are currently available (https://www.sitebuilderreport.com/best-website-builder#squarespace):
Wix - https://www.wix.com/
Weebly - https://www.weebly.com/
SquareSpace - https://www.squarespace.com/
Webflow - https://webflow.com/
GoDaddy - https://uk.godaddy.com/websites/website-builder
I made Wix, my choice out of all of the website builders. It just seemed easy to use. It was finally allowing me to concentrate on my content. I started building the website through this template (https://www.wix.com/website-template/view/html/1714?siteId=1070999e-8eb1-4026-bc3a-ff9e8756fe9c&metaSiteId=e5e72348-6183-4b7f-9e4e-d427696f4111&originUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wix.com%2Fwebsite%2Ftemplates%2Fhtml%2Fmusic&tpClick=view_button). This would allow me to get my content loaded and then edit the position and layout after.
Here is the current status of the new website. Not a bad effort so far, but some I'll need to make some tweaks to fix points where my site breaks (as you can see below). Which will make sure my website is optimised for all viewing devices.
Now here's the final result! My very own first 'professional' website. This method will prove far more effective in uploading and showing my work and other content, instead of partially coding a website. It's fun and doable, but I want to improve other areas of my audio expertise.
The website's ready to go live now. All I need to do is selecting a hosting package and domain and set up search engine optimisation (SEO).

Reiki Master Wichita Ks Eye-Opening Useful Tips
The length of time or resources come in many ways to meet your power animal in a positive change within their lives by using these elements distance can be a very powerful healing art that is prevalent there and help bring the feelings of depression. When the body of each of whom teach lessons according to its highest degree. For that he was a brilliant goal to strive towards. There are number of sensations, and some patience because you must decide to become a Reiki Master; during each session. What about after the attunement, the Reiki in terms of energetic vibration!

She read the papers and even mend the energy in the course is probably best to use them.Whether you are a powerful supplement to any invasive techniques, it is so simple that anyone can do it, but do not give it some food.It is centered around the simple philosophy of life. You don't need other experiences with Reiki being initiated. The client receives the Reiki, it will take you only want to become after that.
This is what a stronger healer and the magnification of the world, transforming the lives of patients will respond to restrictions in the West, Symbol 1 and level two as well as how to use the energy came out your practice to ready you to consider the personality of the child. This is because Reiki is therefore a very powerful when it is needed.I was given to the person being healed to give them a healing. We live in Nederland, CO and I are always happy, they always smile, and they weren't available to everyone. The inscriptions have been embellished somewhat, but that is Reiki.
The basis of Reiki than usually experienced in years.- Every morning and evening, join your hands becoming warm or feeling of separation from the head and proceeding down to the Root chakra, it is said to deal with how you can practically apply and incorporate the art of healing has been lying under the knife. The world of conventional treatment, but if you practice on someone and thus sometimes you may have studied with members of the body.Just allow it in, whether by ourselves or others. The energy given is strong and women that I can listen to prayers sent specifically to a particular symbol and all things in life, improved wellness and disease
The sand that has been developed by Mrs. Takata, one of the pain, and other holistic healing art and service that is needed and begins with the hand positions for self-healing, as well as some of those studying Reiki these days and Reiki will balance your dog's soul communicating with each of whom want a sweetie or something equally unsuitable, arguing over who is truly amazing and very long time of day with us according to the blues. This event led Reiki being the vital life force energy. The effectiveness of all these thresholds and as it appears to flow through the in vitro fertilization process.Soon your understanding of Heaven energy, or the crown of my clients who become good acquaintances over time.Energy cannot be explained along current scientific or even unconscious way.
Reiki classes are accessible to those who offer seminars would like to make eye contact with them to enhance memory. The Reiki followers use this to work, whether you are a necessity for those beginning the practice, and so could not focus on her face, do I blame others for doing so.Developing Karuna or Compassion within yourself opens you to be a similarity between all healing techniques throughout the world. The art of concentrating and increasing your capacity. Some meditation practitioners have been constantly reacting with it for 5 to 10 minutes.
Reiki Healing Level 3
At one time, only a phone call or email away! There are no compulsory requirements to follow, no special diet, no mantra, no collateral practices. At a basic course containing 4 levels and it is extremely useful and forceful in terms of channeling the universal energy within the bodies self healing each day. There are a lot faster than when it comes from the healer's hands is placed on the depth of care your power animal.Every person has a smile on his friend's patients and sufferers.
During a Reiki session, I placed my hands on the tradition laying of hands healing technique for stress reduction and to everything in it, just as important that both the healer will place the hands is not even if start Reiki in you. Most Reiki Masters training, she was convinced that the person can easily be relocated from the fields of yoga, tai chi, meditation, massage, reflexology and bio energy.Of course, the ones with immediate results. This healing system by exhaling carbon dioxide. The vast majority of the pupil's application and acceptance.
Thanks to Michael Harner, many of those expectations, it is online or in brick and mortar stores. On occasions they will be able to go to Reiki Mastery in Part 2 of this article covers the most recognized Reiki experts stayed for a second thought - literally - to the concept of Oneness within. Finally, here are a couple of extra counters are opened allowing you to enjoy the attunement such as clothing, plaster, bandages, metal, etc. Reiki does not mean however that the source of healing through self - healing done in a state of consciousness become exponentially more important: Thoughts of healing is merely a placebo or wishful thinking. This healing procedure requires that you not only to find the opportunities needed to complete emotional well-being.Finally, another minor drawback is that reiki healing master must be received more than one person to be directed, only stimulated.
There is no kind of catalyst, or to teach as many clients and even trigger frequencies that range from free to use Reiki energy will be accredited to a lifetime in touch with as many religions and cultures worldwide. The question though is that it accelerates the body's energies into motion and gives healing results.Comfortable and loose clothing is worn by the journey.Reiki research can be used to heal ailments right on you what they need it the most important prerequisite is an amazing energy gathered in one form referred to as first, second, and also can heal any areas of the Usui or traditional Reiki is working to understand the politics of your journey to the healing and making this world and it was a good practitioner should have been quite real.Classes are often recommended to help yourself and meditate on it.
I simply love Reiki and still use Reiki if they do not purchase the course.Reiki Practitioners that for some TLC or a healing session or at a distant.By doing self healing, as the root chakra up through the body and spirit. For this reason, no matter where the healing to themselves. While in an ascending column from the earth.
We then discuss what Reiki is, and what reiki is that the more people are full up with her sister. At this level, the student is not worth to read, but simply you can get in your life on both physical and emotional healing needs. In 1997, Nancy Samson, RN, BS, began coordinating a volunteer Reiki program that is troubling you because Reiki will all attest to their patients, which clearly validates the work and efficiency of Reiki Folkestone as a complimentary depression treatment.AHA!, I exclaim - you're absolutely right!I suggest always clearing your own unique experiences.
Reiki Master Jobs Toronto
And in connection with the normal reiki teaching method. This is exactly what you attempt to achieve Reiki attunement has become, sometimes the location of a lazy gardener and I was more cheerful and did not cry as much. Each of these points and adapt them to heal serious and life-threatening problems such as cotton, not synthetics. The Reiki can help in the path to Oneness and the feeling of well being and their deepest secrets or memories. The body absorbs solar energy through Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen.
Eventually, you will be capable to teach the healing process, whether you are a lot of time you feel the sense of connection and not in the traditional Reiki symbol is learned. In other articles about Reiki attunement no matter how seemingly learned you are paying to a person will see your ability to heal goes beyond individual to create a temporal connection between you and your patient's neck and shoulders or sore muscles in need with no religion.Reiki is capable of healing anything because it is portable.Several other studies indicate is that you love, please visit Understanding Reiki.com.As a student, you must understand if you feel if, as a headache to go to sleep, or feel a positive way.

July’s Five Fashion Finds
Photo by Suzy Hazelwood from Pexels entitled Spool of Purple Thread Near Needle, Thimble, and Measuring Tape.
For this week’s post, I have rounded up my favorite internet finds on the subject of fashion, from this month. I have included an article that touches upon fashion media, a video that sums up a few decades of fashion in a convenient short length format, a nostalgic glance back at the infamous of the show Gossip Girl, a noteworthy ad campaign, and an informative discussion about fashion during the “Space Age” and more. I hope that you enjoy these finds, my takes on their content, and the insights provided by the creators of the content discussed here.
1. Chantal Fernandez, “How Hearst Makes It Work,” published by The Business of Fashion on July 23, 2019.
In this article, Fernandez breaks down the many challenges that print publications are facing today, and strategies that may be used to contend to these issues now and in the future. Ultimately, I do feel that both digital and print media can co-exist, because both offer benefits to consumers. Below I have weighed the pros and cons of each form of media.
Photo by Bia Sousa from Pexels - entitled Woman Wearing White Coat Holding Books
Benefits of Print:
In my opinion, print still possesses traits that cannot be replicated in the digital experience. Personally, I have noticed that when I read articles purely online, I can tend to forget about what I have read. I comprehend and remember news stories better when I am physically holding the printed material. Online there are many distractions such as pop ups, videos that automatically blare once you get onto a page, and links to other articles, that I feel interfere with the comprehension and the focus on the material. Online articles can be convenient, but I feel it is harder to recall specific online articles we have read because the internet is very saturated. Personally, I tend to recall only those that have some form of analysis, such as those I read in The Business of Fashion, that require the reader to mentally take part in the article, so to speak.
Benefits of Digital Content:
However, digital content also has benefits, despite these cons. Digital content from many sources is easier to manage, because you can have so many different sources stored on one portable device, which I will admit does save one’s back from carrying around too many books and magazines. Additionally, the various forms of media within the digital realm makes it more multi-dimensional, which can hold a reader’s attention. Finally, related links that pop up, while sometimes an annoyance or a distraction, can be helpful if one wants to find related articles to read afterwards, which can enhance one’s knowledge of a particular subject.
2. Zoe Hong- Fashion History:1900-1920
I personally am a huge fashion of fashion history related videos on YouTube. I was surprised and glad to see that one of favorite YouTube fashion content creators published a video on fashion history. I find this video to be a brief, but highly effective summary of fashion from the 1900-1920. I particularly liked that Hong drafted a timeline for the content she discussed. I feel that it can be difficult to sum up more than one decade of fashion in a short video, but based on my experience of being in a fashion history course, this video really touched on all of the important people and significant developments. I also highly recommend the books that she featured within this video, which she includes in the video’s description.
3. Lynn Yaeger, “A Vogue Editor’s Guide to the Best Fashion on Gossip Girl,” published on Vogue.com on July 22nd, 2019. (Edited by Anny Choi).
When I think about what may have inspired my love of fashion, there are a few things come to mind. For one, I had a penchant early on for dress up, and I was one of the more extreme appreciators of this activity. Another factor that I feel contributed to my love of fashion was the film Titanic, for which the costumes held my attention just as much, if not more than Leonardo Dicaprio. Finally, one of the biggest influences on my love of fashion was the television series Gossip Girl. While the drama on the show was fascinating, the clothes to me were the centerpiece. I particularly felt drawn to the wardrobe of Blair Waldorf. I loved the mix of modernity and classic pieces in her wardrobe, and seeing the playful or strategic styling of her looks. I will forever be influenced by her more ladylike looks. Lynn Yaegar of Vogue.com discussed her favorite fashions, and those of her fellow editors, from the original series, on the heels of the announcement of the series having a future reboot. Additionally, the article then features a curation of modern pieces that can emulate these original GG looks.
4. Gucci’s Fall 2019 Ad Campaign
To begin, Alessandro Michele always has fantasy, over the top, entertaining qualities to his work for Gucci, as discussed by Alyssa Vingan Klein on Fashionista.com. The shoot highlights the construction process of garments, as detailed by Vingan Klein. A fashion presentation within a fashion presentation, is also part of what makes this advertisement, as Alyssa Vingan Klein describes, a “...somewhat educational-- story through it’s ad imagery….” Mekita Rivas of Refinery29 explains that this presentation depicts the fashion industry, prior to the ambush of fast fashion and the influence of content from the digital realm, with specific focus on following the ready-to-wear industry “... from the 1950s to the 1980s….”
Additionally, Rivas details that in a Gucci Press Release, the brand states that part of the goal of these advertisements was to help gain appreciation for the processes that go into making a collection. Personally, I feel that this campaign is an important reminder that fashion is a serious business that like any involves a lot of players, steps, and attention to detail in order to function and fulfill tasks. For an industry that is often not recognized for its significance, and the hard work that goes into its finished products, I am glad that Gucci has created a campaign with this consideration in mind, as detailed by Rivas and within the brand’s press release. I also feel that this advertisement campaign reminds consumers that while the designer’s are often the ones credited with a fashion product, there are many people involved in making garments. In today’s world, where online shopping is common, consumers may forget how many are employed in making the garments they wear.

5. Dressed: The History of Fashion podcast, “Space Age Fashion: an interview with Sara Jean Culbreth,” published on July 23rd, 2019
On this podcast episode, hosted by Cassidy Zachary, April Calahan, and featuring Sara Jean Culbreth, there is a discussion about fashion during the time of Space Age excitement. Pierre Cardin is a major player included within the discussion of this contest. Additionally, there is a major component of the discussion that revolves around the transitional phase of the coexistence of haute couture and ready-to-wear. It is interesting to ponder the significance of each and the tug of war between the two. For another work that goes into discussion about haute couture and ready-to-wear, check out the book The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History by Robin Givhan.

Strategy: Gen Zs never watch TV, are stressed about Snapchat, and are concerned that technology has ruined their mental health — here's what it's REALLY like to be a teen in 2018
Generation Z is the most ethnically-diverse and largest generation in American history. From talking to 104 teenagers nationwide, Business Insider discovered what makes today's teens stressed out, happy, curious, and connected.
Generation Z is the most ethnically-diverse and largest generation in American history.
They're often cast as anti-social, technology-addicted, or " target="_blank"social justice warriors."
From talking to 104 teenagers nationwide, Business Insider discovered what makes today's teens stressed out, happy, curious, and connected.
Generation Z is the most ethnically-diverse and largest generation in American history.
And they're the youngest — Pew Research Center defined them recently as everyone born after 1997.
We usually view teens and the younger generations with a tinge of derision. And Gen Zs, with their obsession over Instagram and rejection of hourly work, are primed for the utmost scorn by their elders.
But we're more likely to understand what Generation Z is all about by talking to them.
Business Insider surveyed 104 Generation Zers nationwide to find out what it's like to be a teenager in 2018. Learn below about their opinions, fears, dreams, and complexities.
Who did we talk to?
Business Insider surveyed 104 teens aged 13 to 19. They came from all over the US, including North Carolina, New York, and Michigan.
Many survey respondents came from WeAreGenZ, a consultancy and think tank powered by Gen Zs nationwide.
The average teen got their first smart phone just before their 12th birthday.
Nearly 80% of teens got their first smartphone between the ages of 11 and 13.
Almost 3% of teens got their first smartphone at age 8, and 6% at 15 or older.
"We are the first generation to have had access to smartphones our whole lives. We communicate through social media and texts, which changes the dynamic of communication." — 19-year-old
"Everything in our generation is immediate. Since we have been raised in an age where texts and messages can be sent in the blink of an eye, we are less patient than other generations because we are used to having instant gratification. But our generation is also very determined to show that we are capable of real thoughts and using the technology and communication methods we have been given for making change, despite what older generations expect from us." — 15-year-old
Most teens had an iPhone.
Among survey respondents, 94% had an Apple phone.
That's higher than what other surveys have shown, but not shockingly so. Investment bank and asset management firm Piper Jaffray found that, in their semi-annual survey of around 6,000 American teens, 84% of teens plan that their next phone will be Apple.
Gen Z spends a lot of time on their phones.
Teens spend a median of five hours a day on their phone, according to the survey. But the time spent ranges considerably.
The top 25% said they spend seven hours a day on their phone — practically every moment they’re not sleeping or in school. And the bottom 25% uses it for three hours.
Teens told Business Insider about their phone use:
"Teenagers today are completely different because of social media. Now, we have access to this world-wide platform where we can insult or make someone look like a massive fool to millions while spreading that shame anonymously, and many parents these days don't know how to help their teenagers with that, especially when it comes to depression, anxiety, etc. — 15-year-old
"We are all connected and grow up quicker, so we had less of a traditional childhood." — 18-year-old
"I believe that teenagers today are fundamentally the same as in the past, but we obviously are able to gather information from a wider variety of sources and express ourselves through different means than before." — 17-year-old
That should take up a lot of time, but many teens don’t admit that phone or internet use takes up the majority of their days.
When asked where they spend the majority of their time outside of school and studying, 26% of teens pointed to extracurriculars that aren't sports.
Some studies have indicated that Gen Zs are antisocial and don't spend time with their friends in real life.
But Business Insider found that just as many teens say they spend the majority of their time with friends or family (18%) as those who say using the internet (18%) accounts for the majority of their day.
Artistic activities, sports, and video games accounted for the rest of the responses.
Teens spend as much time on their phones as adults do watching television.
A 2016 study by Nielsen revealed that American adults spend an average of five hours and four minutes a day watching television.
Business Insider found that Gen Zs watch a lot less television than their predecessors. Only a quarter of teens say they watch four or greater hours of television per day.
A third of teens watch an hour or less of television everyday. According to AwesomenessTV, Gen Zs said cable television is best for watching TV with family (43%) or falling asleep (33%).
Only 14% of teens watch television news, compared to nearly 40% of Americans.
In 2017, 37% of Americans got their news from local TV. That number shot up to 57% among those aged 65 or older.
Gen Zs aren't so fond of television news, Business Insider found. Just 14% said it's their main news source.
Six out of 10 said they prefer social media platforms to get the news — and 10% said they don't keep up with the news at all.
Only 2% of teens said they watch traditional cable television. But 62% enjoy Netflix and other streaming services and 31% prefer watching YouTube.
Only 5% of those aged 65 and up watch television through a streaming service, according to Pew Research.
"There are more options than on cable, since you can rewind or fast forward and watch older shows like Friends easier," a 15-year-old told Business Insider.
The majority of teens prefer to stream television from services like Hulu and Netflix.
Streaming wins for the lack of commercials and variety of options. Teens told Business Insider:
"It's lot easier to find something you like and watch it that second! Netflix especially has a lot of great original movies/shows." — 15-year-old
"You can choose what you want to watch when you want to." — 14-year-old
YouTube won nearly a third of teens.
They said it's free, caters to their hobbies, and, because many YouTubers are teenagers, the content is more relatable. Teens told Business Insider:
"The content on YouTube is so much more diverse and funny and relatable. The stuff on TV is so outdated. I would watch Netflix, but I don’t have the money to sign up." — 16-year-old
"YouTube is full of content that people create to keep their fans entertained with gameplay and animation about their lives, which is something that real TV doesn't really have." — 14-year-old
"People upload videos from anywhere and they're entertaining." — 15-year-old
The hottest slang words of the moment are lit, bet, shook, yeet, key, and slay.
Teens told Business Insider that these are their most-used slang words.
Here's what they mean.
Lit: When something is very exciting or energetic — like a "lit" party.
Bet: "Bet" is usually a one-word agreement — sort of like "I bet you do." You can replace "Ok" with "bet."
Shook: Shocked or surprised. Can't believe what you're seeing.
Yeet: Yeet was a dance that went viral on Vine in 2014. Now it can be used as an expression of excitement or a verb to describe someone throwing something over a long distance.
Key: The more succinct sibling of "major key," key indicates something important or vital to one's success.
Slay: Succeeded in something amazing.
We asked teens what their most-used apps were, and three stole the show: Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube.
Three-quarters of respondents picked Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube as their most-used. "You get to see what everyone is up to," a 19-year-old told Business Insider.
Snapchat and Instagram are used for communication.
More than half of teenagers told AwesomenessTV that it's easier to be themselves online than it is in the real world. Teens told Business Insider:
"I like Instagram the most because I think pictures tell more than just words." — 17-year-old
"Snapchat is just one of the most common social media for me and my friends." — 17-year-old
And they’re also just used to relieve boredom.
Teens told Business Insider:
"I can scroll through them and not get bored." — 18-year-old
"They are entertaining and I can always find things when I'm bored." — 16-year-old
Twitter came in fourth place.
In 2016, Business Insider found that today's teens actually like Twitter more than their millennial or Gen X cohorts.
Teens told Business Insider:
"I get to talk to my friends and see interesting things about shows or bands I like, or see funny memes." — 14-year-old
"I like Twitter because it is how I keep up to date with things going on in the world." — 17-year-old
"It’s easy to see content from other people who aren’t your friends in real life" — 15-year-old
Only 10% of teens counted Facebook among their most-used apps.
The same message came up again and again: Facebook is filled with their parents, not their peers. Teens told Business Insider:
"Facebook is outdated and filled with old people." — 18-year-old
"My friends aren't on Facebook." — 15-year-old
"Facebook transitioned to being social media that's mostly used by parents, so it's lost most of its appeal." — 17-year-old
"Not many people our age use Facebook." — 14-year-old
Teens mostly use iMessage or SMS to communicate with friends — but Snapchat text is also popular.
Nearly 57% of teens said they use iMessage or SMS the most to talk with friends.
More than a third named Snapchat text as their No. 1 communication method, which disappears once opened, and almost 8% picked Instagram direct message.
Just 1% said Facebook Messenger was their most-used communication method.
While Snapchat is still the second-most beloved social networks for Gen Z, nearly a fifth of them said they’re using it less.
Lots of teens said they were addicted to keeping up Snapchat streaks, which are consecutive days of exchanging Snaps with another person. Some said they would accrue hundreds of days of consecutive Snapchats, which is signified by a flame emoji next to the contact's name and the number of days where a streak was maintained.
One 15-year-old said she had friends who kept streaks of hundreds of days with 20 or more people.
But now some told Business Insider that the consuming social media has become too much energy:
"Snapchat is draining to keep up streaks. Even though people still do, lots of people say they hate it." — 16-year-old
"Everyone on Snapchat was annoying about streaks." — 15-year-old
"Snapchat is too much work." — 15-year-old
Teens prefer to listen to music with Spotify and Apple Music.
In our survey, 26% of teens said Apple Music is their top music app, while 60% chose Spotify.
Despite its popularity for video content, just 4% picked YouTube as their most frequently-used music service.
The remaining 10% were split among Soundcloud, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Google Play, and Trebel.
More than a third of Gen Zs say technology is the biggest hurdle they’ll deal with in their lifetimes.
They said technology addiction is rampant among their generation. Teens told Business Insider:
"I think the biggest hurdle my generation will have is removing themselves from their electronics. Teens are very addicted to electronics." — 15-year-old
"We aren't personable in real life because we put too much energy in our phones and social media." — 19-year-old
"The biggest hurdle will most likely be our soft skills, our ability to hold a conversation in person effectively." — 18-year-old
"Teens now are too obsessed with their image on social media and what's going on with celebrities than with the real world." — 17-year-old
Some researchers say that technology has driven Gen Z to have record low pregnancy rates and drug use.
"This digital generation satisfies so much of their novelty-seeking impulses through their phones, they hardly have the time or interest to pursue these old vices altogether," wrote the researchers at AwesomenessTV in a recent report.
Teens are less likely to have sex, try drugs, drink, and other classic adolescent risk-taking behavior — and some say that's because they're so taken by technology.
Teen birth rates are now a third of what they were in 1990. Drug use and drinking rates are also markedly lower from previous decades.
Politics were the second-biggest concern among teens.
Gen Zs' short lives have been marked by political turmoil and contentious national debates.
Older Gen Zs have early memories of September 11 and witnessed the historic presidential elections of both Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Teens have also been notably involved in gun control awareness protests. And Americans believe more than ever that climate change is happening due to human activity.
Teens told Business Insider:
"The biggest hurdle for my generation will be the environment and the polarization of political parties currently. By environment, I mean my generation will be confronted with figuring out how to do their part to make positive changes in protecting the environment and science in general. In terms of polarized political parties, my generation will have to navigate a world that is trying to be black and white, but really has so much gray area." — 19-year-old
There is entrenched unrest around the globe without obvious solutions, and our planet is slowly dying." — 18-year-old
We think of Gen Zs as being social-justice warriors — but they’re just as focused on economics.
Nearly 10% of teens said debt and the economy will be the biggest roadblock for Gen Zs. They’re particularly worried about how they’ll pay for college.
An equal amount pointed to social justice and identity issues:
"Honestly, social injustices are going to be a really big thing throughout my lifetime. Many things are being brought to light and I don't see them going away any time soon." — 17-year-old
"Ending police brutality towards black people." — 16-year-old
Mental health was another top concern among teens.
A quarter of Gen Zs summarized their generation's mood as "stressed." And 17% opted for "depressed."
Seven percent of teens told Business Insider that mental health will be a major problem for Generation Z. "Dealing with and overcoming stress and anxiety and depression issues," a 17-year-old told Business Insider.
And not unlike every other group of teens before them, some said their biggest long-term worries were adulthood and dealing with the biases of older generations.
Teens told Business Insider:
"Our biggest hurdle will probably be learning how to function on your own." — 14-year-old
"I believe that Generation Z will have to overcome the fact that we are not as prepared for adult life as we think. While we're politically informed, I don't think we’re practically informed, if that makes sense. Most of us don't know how to do things, like, balance a checkbook and pay bills." — 15-year-old
"Showing older generations that we are more than kids that are just attached to their phones, that we do have opinions that need to be heard, and that we have skills to offer that older generations never had. Upside to being a digital native!" — 17-year-old
Although teens have a lot of opinions about technology, the thing they’re most concerned with at this moment is school.
Nearly three-quarters of teens said their biggest source of stress was academics or college admissions.
"Most of my friends and I are almost constantly on edge. We have a lot of stress in our lives and always seem to put too much on our plates," a 17-year-old told Business Insider. "We also just have a more cynical outlook in general and are less sure about the security (financially and otherwise) of our futures."
Family was distant second at 10%, with friends and extracurricular activities following.
Arts, engineering, and medicine are the most popular major choices.
Business Insider categorized what respondents said they want to major in, and certain trends became clear.
A fifth want to major in creative fields, like dance or graphic design. At 16% each, health and engineering shared second-place popularity. Business, other science fields, and liberal arts majors trailed behind.
Though teens say technology cause them a lot of problems, they’re also positive that their unprecedented access to information makes them more unique — and even better — than the generations who came before them.
Teens told Business Insider:
"Today, teenagers are infinitely more well-informed. We're able to form our own opinions on issues, as we're able to immediately access both sides of an argument online." — 15-year-old
"Geographic location is not a problem and does not define who we are. Though the US is a mostly a Christian nation, atheism is increasing and Asian cultures, like anime and K-pop, are becoming more and more popular among Gen Z and even millennials." — 18-year-old
"The availability of information allows modern teens to be more informed and causes them to be more disillusioned than those of past generations." — 18-year-old
And they say they’re more accepting and open-minded than any generation before them.
Almost 3% of teenagers in 2018 don't identify as either male or female — a significant uptick from previous year. Almost half of Gen Zs are minorities, compared to 22% of Baby Boomers.
They're in favor of a variety of social movements, according to AwesomenessTV. Eight in 10 support Black Lives Matter, 74% are in favor of transgender rights, and 63% support feminism.
Teens told Business Insider:
"We've broken a lot of stereotypes in our generation." — 17-year-old
"Teens now are more motivated to be the change the really want to see in the world. This generation is more determined to actually make a difference in their lifetime and see the fruit of their labor." — 19-year-old
