Look at that! It looks like Warren Township’s Department of Public Works has been busy, removing some deadwood blocking access to the Somerset County equipment lot (and emergency exit), installing a few garbage cans, removing all the tires, the 300 gallon reservoir and some other surface litter. Thanks go out to the DPW guys, Superintendent Doug Buro, Mayor Victor Sordillo and our ER Danny Larsen. Reading Room Renovation

Watchung Hills Elks members Candace and Adam Benzel are accepting donations of new or gently used books for children ages 6-13 to help renovate a reading room at the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic. They are partnering with The Andre Reed Foundation, which was established in 2010 by Buffalo Bills NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Reed to help underprivileged children reach their full potential and become responsible contributors to their communities. Andre has brought his “Read with Reed 83” program to seven Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, including Dallas, Philadelphia, San Diego, and Houston, inspiring over 4,000 children to read at least 30 minutes per day. The goal of Reed's program is to encourage kids to exercise their minds, tackle good books, catch the love of reading, and understand that reading is a way out and up. Candace and Adam are working with him to bring the program here to New Jersey. They will be working with a group of 20 volunteers from the community to paint the reading room, build shelves, interact with kids, and organize a library of books. To help with this project, there is a box at the Watchung Hills Elks Lodge where book donations are gratefully accepted until July 1. 3rd Annual Deb Case Memorial Golf Outing

For the 3rd year in a row, Watchung Hills Elks Lodge 885 will be hosting a Golf Outing at the Warrenbrook Golf Course, followed by dinner at the lodge. This event is a fundraiser that benefits our Drug Awareness and Veterans Services committees, held in honor of Debra Louanne Case who passed away on January 27, 2016. Debbie was a member of the Watchung Hills Elks Lodge for 6 years, where she held many officer positions. She was an extraordinary woman, a people person, outgoing and ambitious. Aside from her involvement with the Pool Committee and the Golf Outing, her favorite thing to do at the Elks Lodge was tend bar. This experience was not only rewarding for Debbie, but also very valuable. In her six years at the Elks, Debbie signed more new members than anyone else. Flag Day 2019

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day . It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Please make plans to join us at 4PM on Saturday, June 15th, for a ceremony led by Warren, NJ Boy Scout Troop 228. There will be "Hospitality" afterwards - snacks and sandwiches, at no charge. This is a public, family-friendly event, open to all - bring your friends and family as we express our patriotism on this special day. Help instill in our children a sense of pride in our country. Did you know...? Patriotism has characterized the Elks since the early days of the organization. Allegiance to the flag of our country is a requirement of every member.

Memorial Day 2019

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. On Memorial Day, think about how you can show your appreciation for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Attend a Memorial Day parade or event in your area. Visit a VA hospital. Display the US flag to salute those gave their lives for their nation's freedom. Elks pledge "So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them." The Elks National Veterans Service Commission takes that pledge one step further, and promises service to our nation's veterans and military members, with a special focus on service to those in need.

Non-Profits Welcome Here

One of the most challenging aspects of running a small non-profit is having a place to meet. A good meeting room provides an atmosphere that facilitates effective and decisive meetings. There's nothing wrong with a friend's living room or a library conference room. Star Bucks and Panera Bread seem not to mind meetings. However these options aren't always reliable because of their "first-come, first-serve" nature and certainly can become challenging when the number of members grows. The Watchung Hills Elks have 6.5 acres of property that include a lodge meeting hall, bandstand, picnic ground and pavilion. These are all available for rent by the public -- birthday parties, retirement celebrations, weddings, concerts, movie-nights, etc. But for non-profits in and near Warren Township, NJ, they can be rented at no charge. (Additionally if you're an Elk, you gain access to our bar/lounge and large, private swimming pool.) Read the full article

Easter Potluck 2019

Are you alone for the Easter Holiday? Would you like to spend some time with your Elks Family at our lodge? If so, please make plans to join us for a family-style potluck. As is true with all potluck meals, this is not a fundraiser, but please consider donating and bringing some food to the meal - whether it be appetizers, side-dishes or desserts.
