Wearing a bow tie is a way of broadcasting an aggressive lack of concern for what other people think.
- Warren St. John
Interesting to consider that the bow tie, once most conservative of accoutrements, is now (if it wasn’t always) the sartorial equivalent of a mohawk. Men who wear bow ties may seem a little quirky or even nerdy. Bow ties after all, do look a bit boyish.
The redeeming message that the bow tie relays is that men who wear them, frankly, don’t give a damn about what you think.
As contrarians with an angle (as they are usually ‘careful’ contrarians), those who prefer bow ties carry with them a certain intrigue. If such a man attends a gathering, chances are that each person in the room will observe him to some degree to try to understand who he is and what it is about him that makes him different from others.
If we dare to generalise the personality of the bow tie wearer, we would say that there exists a strange dichotomy in the mind of such a man, as he typically comes across as slightly shy, but in wearing a bow tie, he expresses a formidable boldness.
Contrary to popular opinion you don’t even have to have been a famous architect or a fusty old Oxbridge professor to wear one. It’s time to bring back the bow tie. Not the pre-tied versions. If a man can wear a bow tie, he’s man enough to tie it too. You’re not a toddler anymore. A pre-tied bow tie is as childish as Velcro on your shoes.
Real bow ties are cool.

BILL CHARLAP with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, JAZZ ST LOUIS, 16 (partial livestream)-17 NOVEMBER 2023, both sets!!!
For just the second time, I stayed over for the second set. Besides just getting to see one of my elite pianists with his amazing working trio, the main reward was a mellower set perhaps directed at a possibly more knowledgeable audience. The other rewards, significant to be sure, was to talk to Peter Washington about seeing him on streams before the first set and shaking his hand (his initiative, but gratefully accepted), thanking him and Kenny Washington as they came off the stage and we came down from the balcony after the second set, thanking BILL CHARLAP for the 92NY Jazz in July series between sets and then shaking his hand too afterwards.
But the music comes first—and I don’t mean to diss the 7:30 sets one bit. But Charlap played bigger with, dare I say, more bombast. Glissandi, big stabbing chords, rumbles, and general flash. On the Thursday stream, he was the full Count Basie Orchestra for April in Paris, down to the “one more once” endings. That gig also had a very brisk, bright orange pekoe of a Tea for Two. I came in that night at the end of Love You Madly and my first full tune was Segment by Charlie Parker, “the genius of modern music.” They did it again toward the end of the Friday first set, both were showcases for Peter Washington who was indefatigable throughout the run. So fluid and inventive, always right there. Because I talked to him before, I paid special attention to him during the first set Friday. Kenny Washington of course had his moments then too, but moving over to his side for the second set made him easy to notice. He cleverly move things around with the merest touches. Take him for granted at your peril, but there is some Freddie Green-like unflappability.
Charlap is a bit of the rumpled professor and he does like to tell stories about the tunes. There was a Vernon Duke run of three tunes on Thursday that started with April in Paris, so we found out that Vladimir Dukelsky composed in the European tradition but George Gershwin both urged him to write popular songs and told him he would be Vernon Duke. The last tune in the run was Roundabout which he told us was not to be confused by the tune written by Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, and Bill Bruford (he name checked each of them) which he also really liked.
The Detour Ahead story in the first set evoked Kurt Vonnegut; the plot of Happy Ending was evoked to explain What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life? Both tunes were luscious and Michel LeGrand is best taken in small doses in my opinion. But Charlap likes him and perhaps he knew lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman through his parent. He certainly can draw on the rich harmonies and temper the sentimentality. Both were highlights. Godchild from Birth of the Cool opened things Friday night and I hope I can be excused for thinking it was Ellington. The Man I Love, Yesterdays, After You’ve Gone, and Poor Butterfly were in there. These are Charlap’s toys and he pulls them out lovingly. He is a museum curator but he knows they don’t need to be treated gently. So he didn’t. There was an abstraction and power one doesn’t first think of from the premier keeper of the Great American Songbook. There were lots of stunningly beautiful tunes played with grace and taste, but also power and grit.
That second Friday set though was the one closer to previous expectations. Thanks to the streams, I’ve seen Charlap push things so I knew to expect both. But the second set was the one where the tunes were just stately, easy, and majestic. An Affair to Remember, Dream Dancing, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, both You’re All The World To Me and Too Late Now from Fred Astaire’s movie Royal Wedding, and The Way You Look tonight gave us Harry Warren, Cole Porter, Lerner and Lane, and Jerome Kern twice. Again, the bright boy showing all these wonderful toys.
If I missed most of Love You Madly on Thursday night, I got a double dose of Ellington to close things out. A very slinky I’m Beginning to See the Light and a robust Caravan sent us into the night, but, again, not before being able to give personal thanks to all three of these heroes.
These essays are always souvenirs. But this is a memory I will take off the shelf often.

best sports
In the age of the brief snippet and second enjoyment, the best longform sports records of the past five years resonate extensively more, because they obliged us to stop, take as much time as is required and enter universes and lives we thought we knew, or once in a while, pondered.
Which separates these pieces is that they gave perusers the five basics of who, what, where, how and how, and a short time later astounded presumptions with exposures and nuances that made perusers rethink everything about the subject of the piece. Longforms are less stressed over giving information, and more stressed over procuring understanding into a subject or event.
The records tended to here prompt us that at its best, sportswriting can be as staggering, thrilling and persuading as any film or athletic event, and they can in like manner do something different that has all the earmarks of being unfathomable in the mechanized age: make you really think about it.
Jon Wertheim is most likely the best writer in the business, and his SI.com longform piece on past NBA player Lorenzen Wright is prime verification of his capacity. wrote Sports Show president in a blog post
Wright was one of those competitors fans disastrously recall considering the way that he was never a star, anyway he was most certainly not a scour taking everything into account.
Likewise, not a lot of fans acknowledged he had passed on, significantly less been killed.
Wright played 13 years in the NBA and was something of an understudy, completing his forte for five gatherings.
Wertheim sets up the story with a spine chiller like portrayal of a man's tortured filled voice as he tended to a 911 manager the evening of July 19, 2010, in Memphis, Tennessee.
The man hurls, "Shot… release."
That man was Wright, and not long after those words were communicated, there was the sound of releases, and the line went dead.
Wright was shot in the head and chest and passed on quickly.
Nevertheless, his ruin was long, and Wertheim makes a bewildering appearing of following Wright's life from his school days playing for Memphis, through his NBA extends, his post-playing significant stretches of aimlessness, misery and dark figures, blended by the destruction of his 11-month-old young lady, Sierra, of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
The story is stunning, yet then again a mystery may never be handled.
Who killed Wright?
The story closes with a bend, yet the suitable reaction isn't what's huge.
The title recounts the story, and Warren St. John's start to finish assessment of the individual and soul of school football's by and large misconceived and polarizing figure assimilates a man whom many view as cold and mechanical.
St. John sees all of the inclinations we have about Saban, and he puts them all on the table for evaluation.
Notwithstanding, he moreover goes against those predispositions by showing us Saban's contrary side and making him a nearby horrifying figure considering his inability to anytime feel satisfied.
One particular model: Two days after Saban won the 2012 public title, he exhorted maybe his best friend, "That damn game cost me seven days of selecting."
Also, a while later in the wake of being reminded that a title would presumably uphold selecting, Saban tentatively responded, "Potentially that was OK."
Anyway by then there are various minutes that surprise, similar to when Saban confirms with power, "Mick Jagger can sing. Mick Jagger is an unbelievable entertainer."
One ought to scrutinize the piece to fathom the particular situation, yet take care of business to say, who may have thought Mr. Never Smiles is a Rolling Stones fan?
This was a sensible and changed assessment of a man whose life theory "right is infrequently misguided," pushes him to search for significance long past when by far most would have stopped endeavoring.
Dan Shanoff of USA Today situated this profile as likely the best piece of sportswriting in 2013.

What if Kate and Bruce were born around the same time? What if the tragedies that made them the heroes they become, also happened around the same time? What if the two of them ended up living together? What if the two of them ended up as huge theater nerds? What if they had some actual healthy coping mechanisms along side their totally not super unhealthy vigilante detective hobby that nearly kills them on a weekly basis? What if everything wasn't a shitty cheap ass drama show written by racist, misogynist, homophobic, all the bad ism's and phobia's and ist's?
(No disrespect to the individuals who try to give us good diverse content. Actually, all the respect because DC as whole is a weak dumb ass bitch and kudos to those people for tolerating that bastard.)
Here is my sad, pathetic attempt to fix the DC universe that I am very much under qualified and under prepared for. Enjoy. (And I'll get to finishing the relationship tags soon, it's just not on the agenda right about now. There is just so many fucking characters. The character tags are technically unfinished because that won't be all of the characters showing up. Do I really hate myself and DC that much?)

New Year’s Update
On New Year's 2015-2016, I made a resolution which I have re-made every year since: to
1) Read as many books as possible throughout the year, with the ultimate goal of (1a) reading at least 52 books (1/week) in one year, and
2) Keep an accurate and up-to-date list of all the books I'd read, so that I'd never forget.
I'm happy to relate that, after three years of trying, I have successfully achieved Resolution 1a! This year I finished 79 books! In past years I’ve posted my results on Facebook, but for the first time ever I can share the results with ya’ll here.

Rogue squadron 3d power ups
Seuss’ popular children’s book Oh, The Places You’ll Go!. Animation Group’s feature film based on Dr. Proof that Chu is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors came again this week, as he is now attached to direct Warner Bros. Chu ( In the Heights, Crazy Rich Asians). Just last week, Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda) were finally announced as the stars of the long-in-development Wicked movie, which will be directed next year by Jon M. SEUSS’ OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! TO BECOME ANIMATED FEATURE Before Jim Jones, DiCaprio can be seen in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up () and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon ().ġ. Jim Jones does not yet have a director, but it does have a screenwriter in Scott Rosenberg, whose recent films include the two recent Jumanji movies and the Marvel Comics adaptation Venom. Leonardo DiCaprio will also produce Jim Jones through his Appian Way production company. James Warren Jones organized his followers as a settlement called Jonestown in Guyana in South America, where he eventually orchestrated the mass suicide of over 900 followers (and the murders of others). Coincidentally, DiCaprio’s newest project is also about a real life cult leader responsible for several deaths, as he is in final negotiations with MGM to star in the 1970s-set historical drama Jim Jones. Although that film was primarily about the friendship between a cowboy TV star and his stuntman best friend (Brad Pitt), the cult led by Charles Manson also figured heavily in the film’s B plot (and final sequences). The last time we saw Leonardo DiCaprio in a theatrically released feature film was in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (Certified Fresh at 85%). (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection) It’s up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends. This WEEK’S TOP STORY LEONARDO DICAPRIO TO PORTRAY CULT LEADER JIM JONES IN NEW BIOPIC Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren’t particularly good at. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios. In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. Astonishing 3D details include real time lighting and special effects (explosions, smoke, engine glow, tracer fire and more). Test your flying skill through extraordinary environments ‒ over water, through canyons, deserts, and volcanic regions. Prove you’ve got what it takes against a slew of the Empire’s best and baddest, including AT-AT walkers, AT-STs, TIE fighters and more. Take on the Galactic Empire in X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, V-wings, and snowspeeders.
You will fly into battle as Luke Skywalker, to engage in intense, fast-paced planetary air-to-ground and air-to-air missions ‒ dogfights, search and destroy, reconnaissance, bombing runs, rescue assignments, and more. To save the Rebel Alliance from this Imperial onslaught, Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles have assembled the Rogue Squadron, a group of twelve of the most skilled battle-tested starfighter pilots. The mighty Empire is gathering strength for a determined, all-out assault on the Rebel forces. Luke Skywalker, with the help of Wedge Antilles, has blown up the Death Star. It is a time of great rejoicing in the galaxy. Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3D freeload PC game in a pre-installed direct link with updates and dlcs, for mac os x dmg from Nintendo.
