Book Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi (Spoilers)

I sped read through this book so I barely remembered what happened. All I remember is that I HAD to know what happened next.

Unravel Me is basically the New Moon of the Twilight series. You need to read it to understand what is going on, but all of the good stuff happens at the end aka Warner and Juliette.

It begins with Juliette being unable to assimilate with her new X-men friends at Omega Point. Thankfully, Kenji calls her out on her moping because girl we all know you’ve got problems but everybody is dealing with stuff and they could really use your help. The reader also discovers how Adam can touch her. At first, I thought her touch killed everyone but would only uncontrollably turn him on because he literally couldn’t keep his hands off of her (Kenji called him out on wanting to jump her bones in the cafeteria), felt like he was losing his mind, and would run a fever around her. Honestly, I think this would have been a more interesting choice🤷🏻‍♀️ lol. But it turns out his superpower is nullifying other superhumans’ superpowers. It’s physically draining for him, making their relationship a no-go (thank goodness cause spoiler alert: he’s horrible.) 

In comparison, his half-brother Aaron Warner can touch Juliette because he’s also a superhuman. His gift is taking others’ gifts and using them as his own (grieve nothing, take everything amiright?). Juliette’s power makes him stronger. SWOON for this power couple. Warner is captured by the rebels at Omega Point and opens up to Juliette, telling her that he read her diary and finally found an equal who would understand him. He says that he never intended to use her as a weapon like his father wanted and instead would be all the happier if his abusive father was dead. He initially wanted Juliette to learn how her skin worked to develop a cure for his mother whose painful skin made it impossible for her to have any quality of life. Juliette begins to reluctantly bond with him as they share an intense attraction to one another that Warner can sense the truth in as knowing how people really feel is another gift of his. She finds herself falling in love as Warner confesses his consuming feelings for her. She remembers his secret kindness to a stray dog, his love of books, and his hidden longing for people not to view him as a monster. Then she remembers some not-so-great things mid- heavy makeout session such as the time he hung Adam in a meat processing facility to die…I mean he did view Adam as a traitor who kidnapped Juliette….but… that’s a lot to deal with…Then again, she did enjoy shooting Warner’s dad multiple times so they’re kinda sadistic like that. Whatever, I ship Warnette. They’re two broken humans becoming stronger and unstoppable together. What more could you want?

At the end of the book, Juliette is shot point blank in the chest by Aaron and Adam (and James’) dad, Anderson. All the while knowing that Juliette will not have him, Warner does everything possible to save her life by borrowing the twins’ (superhuman doctors basically) power and reviving her. Having awakened from her near death experience, Juliette is reborn like the golden bird of her dreams (which we learn was meant to represent Warner) and she is ready to go to war.
