when myungsoo, your boyfriend of three years, first suggested his little road trip extravaganza, you thought he was crazy.
but who were you to deny him when he was smiling at you so damn happily? (see: gif)
as he explained where you would drive and what the destination was, you couldn’t help but zone out, his excited expression far too distracting for its own good
“are you even listening?” he asked, a ghost of a frown taking over his lips
you chuckled, nodding, “of course, love... i’ll just need you to repeat the whole thing. y’know... just in case.”
“[Y/N]! you weren’t listening!”
you laughed and soon myungsoo’s own beautiful laugh was added to the mix
he explained it again, his finger tracing roads on a map he had bought just for the trip
then, he stopped at jeju island, surprising you
“we’re going to jeju?” you asked, images of the beautiful province flashing briefly in your mind as you looked over to myungsoo in disbelief
you had told him before, during one of your 3am conversations, that you had always wanted to visit, but you didn’t think he would go through such procedures just to get you there
myungsoo nodded, smiling sweetly at you. “you said you wanted to go, so i got permission from woolim to take a few days off”
if it weren’t for the table in between you, you would’ve tackled him in a hug right then and there.
it didn’t really deter you, as you walked around the table and squeezed myungsoo in a hug
you heard him laugh, the vibrations of his chest against your cheek almost making you giggle
“let’s leave tomorrow, okay?”
“okay.”
the next day, you and myungsoo were ready to leave for your road trip, with bags packed and his car started
“let’s go!” he said excitedly, despite it being very early in the morning
you, on the other hand, were dead tired, but soon enough myungsoo’s excitement got to you and you were singing along to songs in the car with him
even if it was off tune
eventually, you began to get tired about two hours into the trip
myungsoo noticed and took your hand, intertwining it with his over the middle console
“get some rest, love,” he said, keeping his eyes forward, “you look like you’re about to pass out any moment.”
you just nodded, far too tired to put together any coherent sentences
then, you drifted off, your hand still in myungsoo’s
when you grew quiet (or snored, whichever one applies), myungsoo looked at you from his peripheral
a small smile graced his features, his thumb gently rubbing of your hand
“ah, [Y/N]... what do i do when you look cute doing nothing?” he chuckled, “it’s not good for my heart.”
at first, it was calm. it was peaceful.
but then...
myungsoo’s once stoic expression turned worried when snow began to fall
‘it’s just a little snow,’ he thought to himself, his hand tightening slight over yours, ‘it’ll pass.’
he was wrong, to say the least
light snowfall turned into heavy, big snowflakes obscuring myungsoo’s vision, making it harder to see the road
at some point, it got harder to drive through the inches upon inches of snow, the vehicle whining against the covered road
myungsoo glanced at you, frowning deeply
you still lay asleep, blissfully unaware to the white outside
“look--” he told himself, taking in a deep breath, “don’t panic -- there’s only a blizzard”
when the snow didn’t let up, myungsoo knew he wouldn’t be able to keep driving
cursing quietly, he pulled over to (what he hoped was) the side of the road
not another car was in sight -- no one else was dumb enough to drive in such harsh weather
pulling out his phone, he searched the gps for the nearest town
luckily enough, there was one five minutes away
he sighed, rubbing his eyes tiredly
then, with one final look at the small map, myungsoo kept driving
the supposed five minute drive took a whopping fifteen -- the snow really creating problems for myungsoo’s somewhat old car
as myungsoo pulled into the small town, stopping at a curb, his car finally had enough
it stopped running.
cussing yet again, myungsoo groaned
looking over to you, his frown seemingly settled
‘so much for a getaway.’
myungsoo jumped when something -- or someone -- tapped against his window
to his surprise, a burly man with a snow-covered beard stood outside the car, covered head to toe in winter jackets, snow pants, and boots galore
the man inspected him for a moment before his dark eyes widened, a look of shock washing over his expression
“you’re kim myungsoo! you’re L!” he exclaimed, his voice just barely audible over the strong winds and through the thick glass of myungsoo’s window
the stranger’s eyes landed on your sleeping form before going back to myungsoo, his hands raising as he pointed at a nearby building
“we’ll keep you until the storms over!” he yelled over the noise
myungsoo’s expressioned softened with gratitude, mouthing a ‘thank you’ as he turned to wake you up
“[Y/N], we have to get out for a while.”
when your eyes fluttered open, you weren’t expecting to see... well, white
white was all you could see beyond the vehicle’s glass
“we can’t get anywhere in this weather,” myungsoo sighed, “so we have to stay here until the storm blows by.”
you nodded, your eyes still wide at the sight of snow covering every surface
the man outside waited for the two of you to pull your thick coats on before guiding you to the building
you could barely see the sign outside, ‘the benevolence inn’, a majority of the sign covered in snow
you shivered as the three of you rushed inside, in a rush to get out of the cold
once the doors to the inn opened, you were hit with warm air, the warm sensation coursing through your entire body from your head down to your toes
you sighed happily, relishing in the contrasting heat
myungsoo smiled to himself, shaking the snow out of his hair
“i’m a big fan,” the man said, pulling his toque off, “i never thought i’d see kim myungsoo in such a small town like ours.” the man smiled kindly, giving off a dad-like aura
myungsoo peeked outside, sighing at the view. “looks like we have to stay overnight...”
you nodded, frowning slightly
the man, who’s name tag read ‘kang namhyung’, looked as well, a small smile appearing on his expression at the thought of more ‘clientele’
“your music’s really helped my daughter through some tough stuff,” he told the both of you as he walked over to the reception, greeting someone who you assumed was his husband (given the fact that he pecked the man’s lips upon intact and the fact that he shared the same surname; kang minkyung)
“tell you what,” namhyung said, ignoring the shocked expression his partner wore at the sight of your boyfriend, “i’ll give you a discount. usually it’s $150 per night (each), but since you’re, well, you, we’ll cut it to $50 each.”
your eyebrows raised -- if you took the man’s offer you’d be saving $200 plus it wasn’t like you had anywhere else to go anyway.
besides, you took a look over the lobby, the inn looked quite cozy.
“thank you for your offer,” myungsoo smiled politely, “we’ll take any room.”
the man nodded, taking the money myungsoo slid over the counter
“could you take them up?” namhyung asked minkyung, who nodded
within minutes, you were left in a rather fancy room with a key
“i’ll be right back,” myungsoo mumbled, digging through his pockets for the car keys, “i’m going to get our stuff.”
you nodded, happily leaning into myungsoo’s touch when he left a lingering kiss against your temple, arms wrapping around you for just a moment before he moved away
as the door closed, your eyes traveled throughout the room
you definitely hadn’t expected such a luxurious looking room from the homey inn, not that you were complaining
the room only had one bed, a king size, but that was fine. you had shared a bed with myungsoo before innOCENTLY so you didn’t mind
there was a balcony, not that you were going to use it, giving you a view of the heavy snowfall
you sighed, before smiling at the sight of a fireplace
you’ve never seen a fireplace inside an inn room, only ever in the foyer, and something inside you sparked *badum tss*
you bounded over to the fireplace, a feeling of nostalgia washing over you
even though the holidays were almost over, you had always associated winter with fire, the warmth of its flames as you and your loved ones surrounded it
a smile found its way onto your face, your hand moving out to inspect the wood inside
“i’ll light this then,” you mumbled to yourself, “i hope mr. kang doesn’t mind...”
there was one problem.
you had no idea how to work the fireplace, the design was much different than what you were used to
moments later, myungsoo returned, holding both of your small suitcases in his hands
after placing them near the door, his eyes searched for you
when he saw you, hunched over the fireplace with a look of confusion on your face, he chuckled
“ you don’t know what you’re doing, huh?” he asked, walking over to crouch beside you
you just nodded, hiding your face in his jacket in embarrassment
you couldn’t believe you couldn’t even work a fireplace properly
myungsoo’s eyes traced the mantel, his eyes landing on a switch labeled ‘GAS BURNER’
shifting over, he flipped the switch and in only a few seconds a fire started
after a minute or two the fire had grown to its full size -- the only thing holding it back being the glass that covered the fireplace
myungsoo closed his eyes, breathing in the warm air that began to fill the room, a look of peace on his face
you looked at him, unable to look away as a small smile bloomed upon your features.
“you look cold.” you mumbled, resting your chin on the palm on your hand.
myungsoo just nodded, before moving to sit on the small loveseat not too far away
you followed, myungsoo’s head instantly going to your shoulder, his body moving closer to yours
“sorry we didn’t make it to jeju,” he mumbled, tired from the day’s ‘adventures’
you shook your head, playing with myungsoo’s fingers idly as you looked at the blazing fire
“it’s okay. we have time.”
the room grew quiet, the only noise being the crackling and sizzling coming from the fire
“myungsoo?” you whispered, moving slightly to look at him
he had fallen asleep, his eyes closed and his breath slow
you smiled fondly at the sight, moving back against the seat
shifting, you gently lied myungsoo’s head atop your lap instead, his legs curling up slightly
you brushed stray hairs away from his face, the sight of his content expression illuminated by the embers of fire making your own face warm up
your smile only grew as you hunched over, pressing a short kiss against his forehead
“thanks for taking me out, myungsoo.” you mumbled quietly
your words were swallowed by the silence of the room, and before you knew it you were dozing off yourself
then, right before you fell into the gentle hands of sleep, myungsoo moved, taking your hand in his.
as the two of you stilled, both in the calming embrace of slumber, the clock tick-tocked away until it became midnight.
there, the two of you spent the first minutes of the new year in each other’s arms.
