hello! can i order an etymology on the word warlock <|:]
TL;DR: warlock is a native Germanic formation whose original definition was 'a scoundrel; one who is wicked', from wær, truth (unrelated to war), and loga, deceiver. The former comes from the same root as the first element in verify, while the latter comes from the same root as lie.
English n. warlock 'a sorcerer, wizard, witch; one in league with the Devil and so possessing occult and evil powers' (now archaic except in historical or fictional use), earlier as Early Modern English n. warlock(e, warloch(e, warlach(e 'id.', is a borrowing from Middle Scots n. warlock(e, warlok(e 'id.', earlier as Early Scots n. warlag(he, warlog(he 'id.', passed from Middle English n. warloʒ(e, warlogh(e, warlow(e, werlow(e 'id.' (forms dropping word-final -g(h are preserved in some dialects of Early Modern English), from earlier Old English n. wærloga, werloga 'id.; or more generally, one who is wicked, a scoundrel, liar', giving Proto-English n. *wærloga 'id.' (as needed for the second element), a construction from Proto-English n. *wær 'truth, a statement which is true; promise, agreement' (retained in Old English) and Proto-English n. *loga 'liar, deceiver' (only found in compounds like Old English n. wedloga 'oath-breaker'); the former reflects Proto-West Germanic n. *wāru 'truth' (whence also Old Saxon n. war 'id.', Early Middle Dutch n. wær, war(e 'id.', Old High German n. wara 'id.'), from Proto-Germanic n. *wērō 'id.' (whence also Old Icelandic pl. n. várar 'a group pledge, oath, vow', only in pl. forms), from Proto-Indo-European n. *weh₁reh₂ 'truth, belief' (whence also Proto-Balto-Slavic n. *wēˀrāˀ 'belief, faith', giving Old East Slavic n. вѣра 'id.', Old Church Slavonic n. вѣра 'id.', etc., though there are no Baltic cognates), from Proto-Indo-European r. *weh₁- 'true, truth, to be true' (no direct descendants, but the suffixed Proto-Indo-European adj. *weh₁ros 'true' is reflected in Germanic, Celtic, and Italic); the latter reflects Proto-West Germanic n. *logō 'one that breaks an agreement; liar' (whence also Proto-Low German n. *logo 'id.', only found in sparsely-attested calques like Old Saxon n. treulogo 'troth-breaker'; clearly archaic, even in West Germanic times, with both English and Low German formations being mostly found in religious literature), from Proto-Germanic n. *lugô 'id.' (whence also the second element in Old Icelandic n. þinglogi 'engagement-breaker'; like in West Germanic, probably archaic), from Proto-Indo-European n. *h₂lugʰo 'liar', shortened extension of Proto-Indo-European r. *h₂lewgʰ- 'to announce, give speech' (in Germanic, 'to lie', thus the English term; mirrored all over Indo-European, including Anatolian).
