another 1999 thought about drifter and umbra (i have so many and you will all suffer with me):

drifter asking umbra to "spar" with them because they don't wanna get "lazy" relying too much on warframes in 1999. gotta keep their duviri bod where they stood toe-to-toe with the Dax there (who, if they were a child's perception of a Dax, are hilariously likely stronger than an actual Dax), and they trust Umbra to spar with them without accidentally killing/injuring them.

the hex getting to watch drifter and umbra spar and all of them being like sol. drifter can fucking fight. (imagining before this they thought they relied on warframes or their ~void powers~ to be a threat but no, they can fight fucking warframes as a peer with just a sword and their footwork).

Reddit used to be my comfort social media, because I had a little bubble there consisting of knitting and ND persons, and it was okay.

Now though every time I go there I’m seeing people posting screenshots from KIM with obviously negative dialogue options and being legitimately surprised that they made the Hex in question upset or borderline hostile.

Yeah, some options are ambiguous, or at least read as such. Some depend on tone too much. Sometimes you or the Drifter is just too anxious, or otherwise not in the best state of mind. Fumbles can and will happen in such cases.

But is it just me or is it obviously not okay to tell Aoi “no way someone as cute as you would want to fight”, for example??

What are they puzzled about when she shuts them down??

Of all the arbitrary explanations we could have gotten for why the Drifter alone is going into 1999, "because if the Lotus or Operator do it the Void will take a big, big bite out of their souls because they're compromised and it has an ax to grind against them, but the Drifter is a relatively new variable it won't be expecting" is... fine, actually. It's good.

The pragmatic answer is "because it'd be icky and weird if the Operator did the dating sim stuff," but if you must invent arbitrary explanations for things, by all means, at least tie them into existing characters and relationships in a way that reveals more about them and raises the stakes.
