Hi-ho, Wudge here.

I did so much writing??!?!? Ahhh!

I think it had something to do with giving myself permission (<---easier said than done) to write more exciting scenes out of order. That means action scenes! That means romantic build-up...! Granted they're 'baby's first romance/action scenes' for our MC, because they nonetheless occur quite early on. As a writer I gotta leave myself room to amp the adrenaline up in mid-to-late game scenes.

Some no context peeks - quick disclaimer that none of this is final and may be susceptible to being cut (especially because I wrote out of order):

Warden: "… It was probably that kid's first time pulling a stunt like this. I bet they didn't imagine you'd be there to stop them in their tracks." Warden: "It's good that it was just a kid, too. I don't want you getting into an actual fight without me." Warden: "I mean— if you're assigned under me, I should always be nearby to help, so..." … Is it me, or does he seem a bit flustered by the thought of being near me? Or of me being under him— I suck in a hiss as Warden removes the final thorn [from my hand].

I cough and flap the neck of my top, hoping to diffuse the noxious scent of paint. It doesn't help. Warden: "Uhm— here, hold on—" He shrugs off his jacket and hands it to me. … I can't quite stop myself from gawking at the sight. Warden: "… Was that stupid of me? Maybe this is gross, you don't need to wear my jacket—" I take the jacket from him before he can get too self-conscious. Whether or not I {i}want{/i} to wear it, it'll be better than huffing the spray paint from my own clothes.

Griffin: "Do you trust me?" Player choice: "I do." His eyes seem to flicker, torn between delight and genuine surprise. Griffin: "Really? {i}Wow{/i}. That makes me feel real special, you have no idea." Griffin: "I'm gonna have to trust you right back in return, won't I?"

Griffin: "It's our anniversary. My honey bunny and I just had a splendid meal at the new Michelin-star gastronomic restaurant uptown. Have you been there?" {i}Honey bunny{/i}? If I was trying to maintain a poker face, I'm failing spectacularly at it now. Player choice: "Y—Yeah! All of the gas atomics were… so yummy." (NPC): "… Gas atomics?" Griffin: "My honey bunny has a lisp. I'll kill you if you make fun of [her]."

What else.

I separated last week's driving CG into separate PNGs, and wrote and tested the code to make sure Griffin doesn't show up as... oh, I don't know... a floating pair of eyes?

I also wrote a bit of code to adjust the background height while you're in a car -- you can see a before and after below.

Might have to nudge it back down a bit though.

“I spotted Gentleman Jonnie Marcone, the head of Chicago’s outfit, in attendance, with his gorilla, Hendricks, and his personal attack witch, Gard, floating around near him.” pg. 385 Marcone! Again with that spelling. Why is Molly calling Hendricks a gorilla and Gard a attack witch?

“Too easy,” I whispered “This was too easy.” pg. 397 Yep something’s up

“Mortal upstart. Calling himself a baron. He will pay for what he did to my brother.” pg. 403 Marcone! This is the brother of the Formor from Even Hand

“Miss Gard freaked out about two minutes ago and all but carried out Marcone out of here. Security is mobilizing.” pg. 407 Why am I picturing Gard bride carrying or fireman carrying Marcone?

“Dammit,” I growled “What would Harry do?” pg. 409 WWHD Harry would make it up as he goes so you’re doing great at that part Molly

Jury Duty

“Summons,” I said glowering. “It’s a freaking command. They want to see a real summoning is, I could show them.” pg. 513 Ha  and I can’t believe the government got Harry a summons. He died then came back from the dead and was homeless for a bit. There’s no way bureaucracy was this fast. There has to be scheming involved. String pulling from someone. Maybe Lara or Marcone?

“More had been set aside by the new owner of my old address, formerly Mrs. Spunkelcheif’s boardinghouse, and now the Better Future Society. I hadn’t been able to stomach asking the new owner for my mail, but Butters had gotten it for me.” pg. 513 Wait does this mean that Marcone kept Harry’s mail? How long did Marcone keep Harry’s mail? Even when Harry was dead? Was Marcone hoping Harry would come get them? What was the conversation between Butters and Marcone like?

“The government isn’t the mob, Harry.”

“Aren’t they?” I asked “Pay them money every year to protect you, and God help you don’t.” pg. 514 Ha

“Then a guy in a black muumuu showed up and reconnected the plot of My cousin Vinney.

Okay, it was a robe and the guy was the judge, and he gave us a brief outline of the format of the trial system, but it’s not nearly as entertaining to say it that way.” pg. 516 Ha

“The new kid was in his late twenties” pg. 517 Who let this kid be the prosecutor? He can’t be that out of law school.

“So where was his public defender?” pg. 518 He’s got the right to a public defender so where are they? Something’s up I’m suspicious

So let’s review the facts

Harry who’s died and come back from the died for less than a month only a gets a jury summons despite bureaucracy being slow.

The prosecutor is a new kid and not the DA.

The defense doesn’t have an attorney.

The victim was a stock broker.

The defendant is a tough guy who’s definitely been in fights before.

There is supposedly a child that the man kidnapped.

The defendant is more beat up than seems appropriate.

In conclusion I think that the fear eating Raiths are the victim was a stockbroker and not a ghoul got the girl and the defendant killed a White Court vampire. Then either Marcone or Lara stacked the jury to have Harry involved. They made it so the prosecution was a new guy and the defense doesn’t have a lawyer.

Final thoughts

I liked these stories especially Even Hand and Zoo Days. I loved all the Marcone mentions and his story. I liked the fights and thought the stories were funny. I liked the different perspectives. I want to give Maggie and Harry hugs. I loved all the Dad Harry content I got in Zoo Days. There were so many Bi Harry moments in these. We’re up to 42 moments. Molly’s stories were sad :( Cool that beings exist that only kids can see. Not a fan of some of the things Luccio and Carlos say. I loved Butters first mission. I liked the monster story. I love what Marcone says about Harry. I love that Gary calls Harry. Overall I liked it.

Even Hand

My favorite story. I love the look into Marcone. I do wonder how John Marcone not being John’s Name will play out. Could this name be used against him or used in oaths? Does ‘John Marcone’ hold more weight than his given name now? Who knows his given name? Why did he change it? This does bring interesting ideas with his alliance with Mab and Vadderung. Him being a marine is interesting. Did Marcone serve a full time in the marine? Did he get honorably discharged? Dishonored? What was his rank? I liked how sarcastic Marcone is. He really is a good foil to Harry. I like the 2 Bi Marcone moments. I love that Harry has left such an impression on Marcone with the flimsy doors and the elaborate death trap. I like how Marcone saved both Justine and the kid. I love the Hendricks and Gard moment.

Tell us more about your slugcats!! How tall are they all and whats their favourite thing to do?

First of all, thanks for the ask Moth!! And now to answer your questions… (just for reference, the heights I’m giving are their full heights so thats when they are on their hind legs/standing)

The Acrobat: This slugcat is the oldest of the bunch, being the very first slugcat made by their creator. The Acrobat is male with black fur, white eyes, and green markings on his forelegs. This one is not particularly tall, being about average height for an adult slugcat (4’4/132 cm. Yes I hc scugs to be pretty big djsnfn). As for favorite thing to do? He likes to spend time with his creator, an iterator named Swims Against the Current (SATC). He also loves to travel and often goes on errands for his owner. (Built like a siberian husky)

The Warden: An older slugcat being the 18th created by SATC as a gift to his Junior and sister, an iterator called Flowers of Night (FON). This slugcat is also male with shaggy orange fur flecked with white spots and darker orange stripes along his face. He has golden eyes with a very stocky and muscular build. The Warden is unusually large for his species, being about 5’10/177 cm. His favorite thing to do is nap! Hes very lazy, however if someone or something threatens FON you better watch out cause he is a fierce fighter. He also likes to sunbathe and enjoys the smell of flowers. (Built like a rottweiler)

The Doppelgänger: Despite its small size, this slugcat is one of the older ones. The Doppelgänger is a female slugcat and the 22nd made by SATC. This slugcat is almost completely white with various patches of different colors that constantly shift and change. She has pretty green eyes. She is smaller than average being about 3’7/109 cm. Her favorite thing to do is explore new places and befriend all sorts of interesting creatures. She likes to imitate them too by changing her markings to match theirs. (Built like a mini australian shepherd)

The Necromancer: A very young slugcat and the last one created by SATC before his structure collapsed. The Necromancer is a female slugcat that is light grey in color with deep purple, almost black, eyes and a small blood-red diamond marking in the middle of her forehead. She is fairly tall for a slugcat standing at 4’9/144 cm. Her favorite thing to do is… well its would probably be using her abilities (bringing things back from the dead or verge of death). Whenever she’s too exhausted to do this, she likes to sit and look over the lake near one of the iterator cans in the area. (Built like a saluki)

The Stray: The youngest of the slugcats, just barely considered not a pup. This one is male and a dependent of The Doppelgänger. The Stray was not genetically engineered like the rest, but rather is a “natural” slugcat. He is very small even for his age being only about 2’6/76 cm. His favorite thing to do is explore new places. Ones he may never have been to before. He also enjoys the company of a hardly-functional iterator called Dying Breath. He worries for his friend, knowing theres not much time left for them. (Built like a… idk a medium-small mutt probably)

The Chieftain: This slugcat is my sona! She comes from a different area, and was created by an iterator named Rising Ardent Gaze (my other sona xD). Her fur is a deep ruby-red with a black cape pattern that covers the tips of her ears, back, and top of the tail. She has white-gold eyes and a small scar just beneath the chin. Shes quite short for a slugcat being about 3’10/116 cm and is quite self conscious about this. Her favorite thing to do is find and collect pearls!! She loves pearls so so much (do not touch her pearls she can and will maul you to death if you do. You can inly touch them if she needs help carrying all her pearls—). She likes going up to one of the iterator cans in the area and having one of them read the pearls to her. (100% beagle energy)

A high-res image of Harry’s new board just dropped, and I’m gonna analyse and transcribe as many of the notes as I can. There are parts I couldn’t decypher, so if you want to zoom in the image yourself and help me fill out the blank, I’d me more than grateful!

Under a cut cause it’s going to be a really long post.

The yellow post it above everything else says: The most practical application of my skills is to determine who works best with who. I eliminated interpersonal friction as best as I could so we can move forward efficiently.

My #1 post of 2022

There’s been a lot of talk about AO3 and censorship lately, due to one of the candidates to the OTW board. And I realised I have very strong Opinions:tm: about censorship and the freedom AO3 stands for.

Censorship is not a solution. It doesn’t work and it’s not even easily agreed upon where the line should be drawn. What some people might deem as immoral or reprehensible is not the same others will consider so. For example, you and me can agree that sexual stories about minors turn our stomach, yet other people would also include LGBT+ content there, even the sfw ones, and others might decide that any sexual content at all is immoral. So, how do we agree about what to ban, when nothing of it is even illegal?

because let’s be honest, it’s all fiction. As in, not real. Things like incest, rape and pedophilia are illegal irl, but not in fiction. Cause they’re not harming anyone. Really. You can find it disgusting, I certainly do, but I also recognize no person, no actual human, is harmed in the making of those stories. Because they’re made up and about made up characters. I won’t seek it out, and if I see someone making that kind of content I will most probably avoid them/block them (without harassing them), but they have the right to create any kind of fiction they want.

It always baffles me how readily understood that is when it comes to murder and violence in fiction. Nobody thinks that someone who writers murder mysteries or procedural shows really wants to go out and kill people. However, as soon as it’s about sex, people are up in arms ready to believe that those make believe scenarios are an indicative of someone’s real desires. Why is that? And since we’re on the topic of double standards: why are people clutching their pearls about fanfic, but literature gets a free pass, more or less? You go into a library and you’ll find lots of books with shocking and distasteful topics, including those that contain pedophilic content (like Lolita, to put a famous example), incest (Game of Thrones, among many others), rape, murder, etc. But they want me to believe that fanfic, the medium with severely impaired social acceptance and magnitudes smaller reach, is the actual problem that will “normalize” those ideas? Nah fam, I smell a moral panic, and people finding fanfic writers easier to bully into submission. Because this is all about controlling what forms of creative expression are deemed acceptable. Fanfic IS a form of art, popular art if you will, but still art. And by virtue of how AO3 is designed, it’s ridiculously easy to never see the kind of stories that you find objectionable.

Tags are a wonderful thing. I can specify what I want and what I don’t want in my story results when searching! Tags are the author being responsible and giving due warning. Especially the “dead dove: do not eat” tag, it lets you know that the content of the story will have questionable content, proceed at your own risk or keep scrolling. Same as the “chose to not use archive warnings” that one is a warning in itself that the story might contain triggering/upsetting content, and it’s the prerogative of each reader to decide whether they’re comfortable continuing reading or not. Ultimately, it’s all about taking responsibility for one’s decisions. People who are in favor of censorship in AO3 either don’t know how to control and curate what materials they access, or feel entitled to everyone else taking their morals into account instead of taking responsibility for their own experience in the archive.

None of the stories on AO3 is illegal. Fictional stories are not illegal, not even those dealing with unsavory topics. The archive makes people agree to continue reading whenever you click on a story with a certain rating (or without any rating at all, just in case!), so the reader is giving their consent to continue reading, they’re making an informed choice. Same as with the tags. They’re there, they’re a warning. If someone reads the tags, finds them displeasing and still continues reading, that’s on them. If I find a story with tags about rape/non-con, for example, I keep scrolling. Cause I know I will find the story displeasing and upsetting. The people clutching their pearls and going “but think of the children!” are, mostly, people who refuse that responsibility and ask the world to accommodate them and their morality. And then throw around words like pedohilia and accusations of “kiddie porn” careleslly, watering down the seriousness of such accusations. No, an explicit fanfic of twin, underage siblings going at it is not CSA. Cause there’s no real children involved in it. It might be disgusting for a lot of people (me included), understandably, but you can 100% avoid reading it and interacting with the people who write those. 

Finally, let’s not forget the recent history of fandom spaces, shall we? LiveJournal and Fanfiction.net both had purges of content, after some campaigns for censorship gained traction and popularity. So now everything relating to certain topics is eliminated! Well, except that also includes communities of support for survivors of sexual abuse (it happened in LJ). Well, except that the people pressuring for censorship weren’t happy with the gay smut either, so a lot of LGBT related stuff is now also gone! (happened both in LJ and ff.net). Except, in some countries anything sexual at all, is frowned upon, so why not ban that too? Censorship supporters will always move the goalposts, forever shifting their aim whenever they accomplish something. Because it’s easier and more comfortable to make others conform to their standards than accepting some artistic expressions will be uncomfortable to some people. And trust me, none of them will care if the dark fic in question was written by a survivor of similar experiences trying to cope with their trauma or raise awareness, or if it was done simply for titillation or to safely explore different scenarios in fiction. And the topics that were banned in those websites didn’t disappear at all, they just weren’t properly warned for/detailed in the summaries, so anyone could stumblre upon them by accident. The complete opposite of what happens in AO3.

AO3 was created by people who lived through those censorship events in different fandom spaces, as a response to it. To seeing whole communities and swathes of fan content being unceremoniously deleted overnight. AO3 is an archive and an online library, not a social media platform. It’s a safe haven for anyone to host their fan creations, but that doesn’t mean it’s a safe space as people understand the term in other platforms. In AO3 you make your safe space by using the tags. Because that is the only real way we can have a safe haven for EVERYONE. 

The thing about freedom of speech is that sometimes, you have to defend things you dislike (that, I repeat, are legal in this case), because experience has shown time and time again that as soon as you give an inch to the censors, they take more and more. And today they’re up in arms about “pedophilic fanfics”, but once that is done? It might be all nsfw content, it might be trans related content, it might be something else. But it will happen.

“Jacks took Evangeline’s arm and fluidly shoved her behind him”

“You cannot marry the prince! The Valory Arch can never be opened!”

“What are you going to do with that?” Jacks muttered a curse

“You think I wanted her to try to kill you?” Jacks sounded more offended than she would have expected.

“Jacks lowered onto his haunches and leaned closer, lips pressing together”

“Jacks, stop!” Evangeline grabbed his shoulders. Somehow, she managed to wrench him back.

“We can’t leave her like this.” His voice was perfectly reasonable.

“Jacks slowly brought himself back up to his full towering height, as he looked down on her and drawled”

“How it hurts so much that it compelled you to make a deal with a devil like me?”

“forever in love with someone who will never feel the same way?”

Jacks’s eyes took on the same disturbing, godforsaken look.

“Are you still talking about my heartbreak, or about yours?”

Jacks laughed and gave her a smile so sharp it could have sliced a diamond.

“Forgive me for frightening you. My name is Nicodemus”

“No one had ever tried to kill Evangeline before, and it left her feeling as if death was a little too close”

“His voice deepened, turning more dramatic as he slid onto the bed beside her”

“He should have been difficult to see, but his eyes faintly glowed, burning blue as he raked her over. He took in the broken gold wings.”

“She really didn’t want to cry in front of him”

“the sight of him standing there so cold and callous only reminded her of the way Apollo had died”

“Not that she could believe for a second that he cared about her. He was going to kill her, just as he’d killed Apollo.”

She screamed as soon as it was off. “Murderer! Get a—”

“you’re going to answer without screaming. How long have you been crying like this?”

“I didn’t murder Apollo, and I have no intention of harming you.”

“I’ll never help you with anything ever again,” Evangeline seethed

The words came out with an embarrassing sniffle. “I’d rather stay tied up here forever than help you.”

“instead of reaching for her throat or her heart, he dropped to a crouch and cut the rope binding her”

“Evangeline kicked out with her free leg.

But of course Jacks was quicker.”

“putting her completely off balance as he rose from his crouch”

“I thought I was helping him, but he died as soon as I kissed him.”

“There was never any magic in your kisses,” Jacks interrupted

“When Apollo fell in love with you, it wasn’t because you kissed him, it was because I willed it.”

Jacks sounded more than a little insulted. “I wouldn’t be very terrifying if that were all I could do.”

“I only had you kiss Apollo and Lady Fortuna because it was entertaining”

“I have manipulated you, but I didn’t murder your prince.”

“But when she tried to scream, it turned into a frustrated sob”

“Your tears aren’t normal. I think you’ve been poisoned.”

“It’s grief, Jacks, not poison! Apollo just died in front of me.”

“I’m not criticizing you for being emotional.” Jacks ground his jaw.

“the brutal way he looked down at her made her suspect that she should not have been able to hear his words”

“if we don’t get you the cure soon, you’ll cry yourself to death.”

“She was hurting—her husband had died before her eyes”

HSR 12-21-23

12x Hunt Calyx rounds. Last day for the double drops event, and I'm sticking with my Hunt grind even though I've mostly wrapped up my work. Today's haul went to fleshing out Sushang's Traces (Skill/Talent/Ultimate 7 -> 8). Also leveled her up from 75 to 80 while I was at it.

3x Quantum Cavern rounds. Got a nice set of gloves today (10%+ Crit Damage at L6 is definitely worth keeping around).

I hit Level 70 on Nameless Honor today! Glad I don't need to hustle for weeklies until the next patch in half a week.

I've got some free time tonight so I'm chipping away at Mirror of Chaos.

Stage 4: The Warden in the second fight of the first half gave me some trouble and I had to reset once since Kafka basically got solo'd on my first run. Second run did it, and cleared with 27 cycles left. Had no problems dealing with the IPC squads, but it was a bit slow and I just barely finished in time; 20 cycles left by the end.

Stage 5: Nice and simple for the first half, took the Aurumatons slow and finished with 26 cycles left over. The Blazes on the second half took their sweet time dying, but Argenti was actually pretty fun to take down with this team! Managed to clean him up in time, too, 20 cycles left.

Stage 6: No problems with the first half aside from taking things a lil slowly (and Topaz was living on the edge for a lot of it), wrapped up with 25 cycles left over. I was worried I was gonna hit the turn limit in the second half but actually wound up clearing the stage with 21 cycles left!

Leaving the hard stages for the weekend, but good progress today.

Absently biting at her lip, she wants to suggest that they go in, at least so far as to maybe determine what part of the vast forgotten kingdom they’ve found. But duty and honour also stand in her way, at least somewhat... though the longer she’s on the surface, the more she seems willing to bend the rules...

Especially where her affections for Francis are concerned...
