Guess who just got their copy of @sshannonauthor TBS the Tenth Anniversary edition? (Me!)

I can't wait to dive into this world as I did for the first time six years ago. I get to see my OTP, Paige and Warden for the first time again which is insane. I can't believe we even get that chance so thank you Samantha, truly. This is essentially my version of early Christmas. (And now that I'm older I can actually bust out some champagne for the occasion 😂)

You know what I love about Paige? How young and dumb she is. I mean that with all the love in my heart but she is so young and dumb sometimes. She has been through hell and back and is doing her best to lead a full on rebellion despite being so, so young. Every time she messes up she gets right back up and keeps going. She puts her faith and trust into the wrong people and is punished for it. The fate of all Voyants living under Scion rests on her, or that’s how she feels and because she’s young and dumb she has a hard time accepting help from others. She believes that it is her duty to always put herself on the front lines and do the most dangerous things in the place of others because it wouldn’t be fair of her to ask anyone else to do it when she is perfectly capable. That’s just a symptom of her young and dumb syndrome. And she’s always been this way but now she’s in charge of a whole country of Voyants. And now she has Arcturus to help her.

Meanwhile, Arcturus is her opposite, he’s old and wise. He parallels her and complements her in so many ways. Where Paige is rash and quick to be stupid, Arcturus is careful and thoughtful and tells her when to slow down. But he doesn’t want to control her or force her so he gives her the space to be an idiot and is there to catch her when she falls. And through her mistakes Paige is teaching him the meaning of humanity. They work to bring out the best in each other.

Mr Shine and Mr Bright:

They are sentient celestial bodies (not the sun and moon themselves) who have the ability to manipulate the time of day. They also fight alongside each other. Even if one is defeated, they’ll still do what they can to support their ally.

Paige Mahoney and Warden:

they are complete opposites yet similar in so many ways. They are made in entirely different ways--paige will one day burn up and die but arturus will remain as unchanged as a rock in space-- but they do similar things in the end because they fight the same fight. each of them is a complete person in their own right yet they belong together

they are literally magical soulmates but not in a destiny way more in a 'this is meant to be because we made it that way' way

paige burns hot and bright, she is the spark of revolution and the star at the center of the cosmos she has made for herself. she is a leader and the most important chess piece and the most powerful magic person. also she has shortish blone curls so that looks kind of like a sun halo thing.

arcturus is named after a star, but he does not burn. his light is calm and certain and infinite. he is easily overshadowed by the bright hot stars around him, but he is all the more powerful for it. he is mysterious and even though he himself remains unchanged, the way other people see him changes often. his intentions are never certain, but one can rely on his power and steadiness. Hes literally a creature of the night.

i am re-reading the revised anniversary edition of The Bone Season septology and then i came across this Irish song, and I JUST CRIED buckets of tears because it reminds me so much of Arcturus Mesarthim and Paige Mahoney. my roman empire; my Orpheus and Eurydice; the loves of my life.

it reminds me of their legendary bond, their affection, their understanding that what's happening between them cannot last. the slowest of slow burns, the truest of true loves. THEY'RE EVERYTHING TO ME, YOUR HONOR.

I'm reading the new version of the Mime Order right now and it's hilarious because it's just

Arcturus: *says he looks forward to seeing Paige again* *asks Paige to dance with him* *compares her laughter to music* *tells her that once a Rephaite falls in love the flame never goes out* *admits that he will want her for far longer than her fragile mortal life will allow*

Paige: idk if he wants a relationship with me. Rephaim are so inhuman and he might feel that we're just too different.

i am NOT knowledgeable about Irish heritage and Irish history, but I know that was also a sore spot for some in the og novel. The flashback to Paige's cousin has him and his friends bringing bombs to a protest and being part of the reason it turned into a riot. In the updated version, it's ALL the governments fault.

Apparently sshannons Irish is still Wrong though.

Just popping in, after a long absence, to tell you about the pre-order campaign for my Author's Preferred Text editions of the Bone Season series.

As you may know if you've followed me for a while, I wrote my debut novel, The Bone Season, when I was nineteen and still at university. For its tenth anniversary last year, I decided to re-approach the book with ten years' more writing experience under my belt, and have since revised the whole series to bring it in line with the first. Bloomsbury has given the revised series a beautiful new look, with jackets illustrated by Ivan Belikov, the artist behind The Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night.

The first book is available in hardback now, and the other three are coming in May, in either hardback or paperback. The audiobooks will also be revised, with narration by Alana Kerr Collins. You can pre-order them here.
