#tbt once upon a time in the way back machine. there were 3 of us who met in 4th grade, Ms. Hamer's class at Patterson. Steve lived off Joliet, Kenny lived on Bolling. We pushed each other to achieve more, to be smarter, to survive. These are my earliest and closest friends. we lost Steve (a brilliant black kid and the only one i knew who played tennis aside from Arthur Ashe) a few years ago. Me and Kenny are still close. some of this story is in the book, order yours. #youareketchupbook #unclefunnybunny #dc #ward8 (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmOP5-tOL2P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In Ward 8, a new mural installation celebrates the 100th anniversary of some women gaining the right to vote after #womensuffragists organized for decades. “The Office of D.C. @mayor_bowser decided to place the murals in Ward 8 on Martin Luther King [Ave.] and for women muralists to work collaboratively, demonstrating the synergy of the women’s suffragist movement,” says Lauren Dugas Glover of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. (The Commission and Department of Public Works funded the project.) The installation is made of three murals, standing side-by-side, created by three women of color. The artists all used purple and gold hues, as those were some of the colors associated with the suffragist movement. Purple stood for loyalty, and gold represented life, light and a torch that guided the movement and its purpose, according to the #NationalParkService. It’s one of several art pieces commemorating the centennial of the 19th Amendment going up across the country, including a mosaic of #IdaBWells at #UnionStationDC. While women have gained the right to vote, communities of color continue to experience voter suppression such as long lines and wait times at polling sites, according to the Washington Post. In the mural’s new home in #Ward8, voters experienced similar challenges during the June primary, as some voters waited in line until midnight to cast their ballot. Two Ward 8 residents sued the elections board for voter suppression, alleging that they didn’t receive their voter guide in the mail and polling sites were limited in less populous and gentrified neighborhoods. #dcmurals #dmvnessa #womenartists #southeastdc #igdc #acreativedc #bythingsdc #mydccool #walkwithlocalsdc #dmvnessa (at AmeriHealth DC Member Wellness Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNIOckmheJC/?igshid=z27a34x386zb

Today I made recommendations to the District Department of Transportation to address the community concerns of speeding in @ANC8C. Excessive speeding and the vehicle crashes that happen as a result of them are a critical public safety and public health issue. We are taking a holistic approach to creating a healthier #Ward8. Let’s continue to raise the bar to #AStandardOfExcellence #VisionZero cc: @ddotdc @iamcorambarry @district8c03 @district8c02 @icekoldkutz @robertwhite_dc @marycheh @allysoncarpenter @it8ezbnme @goldielockz_z @coco.dc_ @dcyds @steindemocrats @christinahendersondc @cm_silverman @anitabondsdc @brittany_geneva @cmlewisgeorgew4 @councilmember_robertwhite (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLKn8dmhc3X/?igshid=1xylho0v84yt0

The Ward 8
Tumblr media
Rye, Grenadine, and Citrus Sorbet
Over 100 years ago, Yvonne’s in downtown Boston was known as Locke-Ober. Originally two separate establishments, Lock-Over was formed in 1901 by wholesale liquor dealers who decided to combine rivals Louis Ober and Frank Locke’s legacies.
Locke-Ober’s claim to fame originates a couple years before it got its name in 1898. A bartender named Tom Hussion was working behind the bar and one evening Martin ‘the Mahatma’ Lomasney and his friends came to celebrate what they were sure would be a win for Martin. Martin was  running for a political position in Boston’s Ward 8, which today is right around where the South End and Roxbury meet. Bars often helped political candidate's by telling customers who to vote for or candidates would buy rounds of drinks. The group asked Tom to make something special so they could all cheers. So Tom mixed together what became from then on known as the Ward 8 cocktail. He used whiskey, lemon juice, and grenadine (pomegranate syrup). The one hiccup to the tale, though, is that grenadine was very rare and difficult to get your hands on before the turn of the century. Of course, it is possible that Tom made his own grenadine since pomegranates were available, but unfortunately we just will never know. But the Ward 8 lives on as the one and only classic cocktail that originated in Boston. By 1914, you could buy premixed bottles of Ward 8. And in 1934, right after prohibition,  Esquire magazine listed the cocktail as among the top ten of the year.
Locke-Ober went on to survive prohibition by staying open as a restaurant and locking their wine rooms and cellar. Harvard college students were patrons of this new concept, although they cheated slightly. One Harvard grad remembered bringing his liquor in a paper bag and pouring it into teacups.
Even though prohibition allowed for women to frequent bars unlike never before,  Locke-Ober’ main dining space stayed strictly male all the way until the later half of the 20th century. Women finally forced themselves into Locke-Ober's first-floor dining room in 1970, when a 'Dr. Remington' of MIT reserved a table, but the 'doctor' turned out to be female, leading to a permanent change of policy.

over the past decade, i’ve done everything in my power to warn people about this current moment; from building and bringing 44 to Smith Commons to the art and building of Smith Public Trust⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ @gaiastreetart’s rooster “Dusk of H Street” was to wake people up⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ @PublicTrustDC was an allegory of America’s violent imperialism, built on black, brown, red and yellow skin⁣⁣ ⁣ but we were Black, alone, unseen and unheard⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ the books, our history, the safe spaces for artists, musicians and LGBTQ+,  fighting gentrification, fighting #PoliceBrutality, supporting local, creating jobs, #BlackLivesMatter⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ in reply, cats told me we needed more IPAs on tap, 1 star review because they couldn't find parking etc... they never had a clue what we were really doing or what was hidden in plain sight⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ "The concept of the public trust relates back to the origins of democratic government and its seminal idea that within the public lies the true power and future of a society; therefore, whatever trust the public places in its officials must be respected.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ i mean, we really asked the tough questions; did the work that folks like @chefjoseandres, @andpizza and @erikbruneryang etc were and are still doing⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ but we were Black, alone, unseen and unheard⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ so i thought maybe if the celebs come they’ll listen⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ or maybe if we do a festival they’ll they see that #BlackLivesMatter ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ or maybe if we bring the sexy, they’ll listen to the #MeToo movement⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ or maybe if we feed kids in #Ward7 & #Ward8, then they’ll help kids⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ but we were Black, alone, unseen and unheard⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ my message here is twofold:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1. if people don’t use this moment to learn to work together, we will all perish⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 2. Black folks in general, and Black food & bev folks specifically, have something to say & should be listened to, without having to conform to yelp style ratings systems and white food critics etc in order to be heard⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✊🏾🖤✊🏾 (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBI8_MphVdt/?igshid=ewx1138o3byy

Day 27: Kesha Lee is the #founder of #Ward8Reads a #nonprofit dedicated to increasing the literacy of DC’s #Ward8 #community! #Literacy rates in Ward 8 are dismal, starting from the #elementaryschools only 9% of students are at or exceeding their reading levels. Which translates later to the 38% of adults functionally #illiterate. One of the major contributors to these statistics is the lack of #bookaccess in Ward 8! For every one book is there are 830 #children in need of quality literature. @ward8reads is actively putting culturally relevant books in the hands of the community through community partnerships + creating more community libraries. Since 2015 they have in-fluxed over 12,000 books into Ward 8. Currently they are looking to raise $10k to keep increasing that number! #Donate $125 & you can sponsor a home #library for a #family in Ward 8; every little bit helps! #linkinbio . . . . . #weluvbooks #blackbooksmatter #blackowned #buyfromablackwoman #bethechange #bookdesert #kidsbooks #acreativedc #dc #anacostia #soufsidecreative (at Southeast, Washington, D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Jt2yBpDJY/?igshid=ie0j06livq1d

Addressing #PublicHealth & #PublicSafety is a multifaceted issue. It will take a wholistic approach. Therefore, we are working to significantly reduce the institutions that sell mind altering substances in close proximity to elementary and middle schools. #Ward8 is saturated with an excessive amount of liquor stores some within 100 feet of schools. Some are within 100 feet of another liquor store. If we can significantly reduce these businesses that exploit us and capitalize off of the pain of living in poverty, we can make a serious dent on many of the other social issues that adversely impact our neighborhoods. As an alternative, we can offer healthier food choices which will have a more positive impact on #PublicHealth and #PublicSafety. To be clear, the goal is to REDUCE, not eradicate all liquor stores in #Ward8. This is going to take a community effort. I’m going to need our health experts, social scientists and activist community to help support! #NoMoreLiquorStores in #Ward8 As Commissioners lets #RaiseTheBar to #AStandardOfExcellence Thank you @lv_writes_ and the @washinformer for your support! How often is your decision of what to drink determined by the color of a drink? We are often surprised how many people actually end up@loving what they thought they “hated” just by having a Mixologist to guide them in the right direction and show them how to enjoy some of the finer things in life. #drinkwhiskey #ward8 (at Mixology Flaired Studios)
