MAMA minimart by PAPUAmart.com Limited Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
The launch of MAMA Minimart by PAPUAmart.com Limited signifies a powerful step towards economic empowerment for Melanesian in Papua New Guinea and across Melanesia. This innovative retail store is not only a business venture but also a platform for promoting women entrepreneurs, strengthening the local economy, and uplifting communities in the region. In this blog post, we will delve into the impact of MAMA Minimart and the specific strategies and initiatives it has implemented to support women in business and drive economic growth in Melanesia.
One of the key strategies employed by MAMA Minimart to promote economic empowerment for Melanesian mothers is providing opportunities for women entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products. The store serves as a marketplace for locally-made goods, ranging from traditional crafts to homemade food items, giving women a platform to not only generate income but also build their brands and expand their customer base. By supporting these women entrepreneurs, MAMA Minimart is helping to create sustainable livelihoods for families and communities in Melanesia.
Moreover, MAMA Minimart is committed to sourcing products from local suppliers, thereby boosting the local economy and supporting small-scale producers. By prioritizing locally-made goods, the store not only promotes economic growth within the community but also preserves traditional craftsmanship and promotes cultural heritage. This focus on local sourcing also helps to reduce the carbon footprint associated with importing goods, contributing to environmental sustainability in the region.
In addition to supporting women entrepreneurs and local suppliers, MAMA Minimart also plays a vital role in community development. The store serves as a gathering place for locals to shop, socialize, and support each other. By fostering a sense of community, MAMA Minimart is not only driving economic growth but also promoting social cohesion and unity in Melanesia. This sense of community empowerment is crucial in building resilience and addressing social issues in the region.
Despite its numerous benefits, MAMA Minimart faces challenges in its endeavor to promote economic empowerment for Melanesian mothers. Limited access to capital, market information, and business networks are some of the barriers that women entrepreneurs in the region often encounter. To address these challenges, MAMA Minimart could provide training and mentorship programs for women entrepreneurs, facilitate access to finance through partnership with microfinance institutions, and establish strong networks with other businesses and organizations to support women in business.
Overall, the economic impact of MAMA Minimart in promoting economic empowerment for Melanesian mothers is significant and far-reaching. By supporting women entrepreneurs, strengthening the local economy, and uplifting communities in the region, MAMA Minimart is making a positive difference in Melanesia. Through its innovative strategies and initiatives, the store is not only driving economic growth but also empowering women to achieve financial independence and create a better future for themselves and their families. Economic empowerment for women is crucial in fostering sustainable development and building resilient communities in Melanesia, and MAMA Minimart is leading the way in this important endeavor.

Saturday Matinees: Unite for Bissau (Nô Kumpu Guiné): agroecology and feminism in Guinea Bissau
Unite for Bissau is something to celebrate, because however thorough it might be in its execution, it does try to tell stories which most of us have never heard.
Director: Iara Lee Running time: 40mins Film festivals cost a lot of money – and so they often struggle to break even, let alone make a profit. With submission fees often posing as the only dependable source of revenue that many festivals have access to, that can make granting waivers difficult. Sadly, this means filmmakers who already struggle to have their voices heard end up even further…

On this World Environment Day, we at Cultures of Resistance are thinking about all the courageous organizations working to combat the fossil fuel industry—one of which is 350.org.
Last year, our sister organization, the Cultures of Resistance Network, supported 350.org’s Pacific Climate Warriors program and work in Latin America and Africa. The Latin America team is working on stopping fossil fuel projects by curbing the flow of financing to them, while the Africa team is working on stopping the construction of the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline.
350.org has a ton of local groups that allow you to meet like-minded people and get involved in climate activism. Want to take part? Find a 350.org group near you at:
Our recent film, WANTOKS: Dance of Resilience in Melanesia, profiles climate warriors in the Pacific as they fight for collective action against the perils of a warming world. You can watch full film on our YouTube channel!

One good example is wantokism culture where your integrity will be challenged and will make it difficult for you especially in your decision making.” Commissioner Mangau adds, “Despite the challenges you will encounter, I urge each of you to be strong, courageous and to rise above the pressures and uphold the laws of this country in a fair manner. “To be strong, courageous and to rise above the pressures and uphold the laws of this country in a fair manner. To do this, it requires personal discipline and uphold our organisation’s code of conduct at all times both on and off duty.” Mangau He said, “I trust that you will build on what you have learned in theory at the Police Academy and put into practice when executing police duties at your work post during your two years’ probation period. On the island nation of Tuvalu, the sole runway at the international airport is about 1500 meters long. At times when no planes are scheduled to land, it is open to all residents, and you will see people walking or enjoying sports such as volleyball and rugby. Farmers’ markets, shops, and public services all take place there. It’s a unique sight, but one that will disappear due to global warming.
Climate catastrophe has affected ocean ecosystems and raised sea levels, putting Tuvalu in peril. We all need to act NOW to help island peoples preserve their unique homelands!
Our film Wantoks examines the struggles of communities on Melanesian islands who are fighting colonialism and working for cultural survival, even while confronting the challenges of global climate change:
We were honored to have the film tour with a brilliant photo exhibition by Vlad Sokhin (@lens_pacific), entitled "WARM WATERS: the effects of climate change on the Pacific region communities.” Learn more about the exhibition here:
