"Sparton" radio, Walter Dorwin Teague, 1936, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture
blue with black trim; [Model #517] By the middle of the 1930s, radios had become fixtures in two-thirds of American households, bringing news of contemporary events, music and entertainment of all kinds to 85% of the population. This radio was the first of a series of blue-mirrored glass models introduced in the middle of the 1930s by the Sparks-Withington company under the brand name Sparton, a conflation of the company’s name suggestive of rockets, space exploration, and Martians. Size: 9 x 18 x 8 in. (22.86 x 45.72 x 20.32 cm) Medium: Mirrored glass, wood, chromium steel, electrical components

"Nocturne" radio, Walter Dorwin Teague, c. 1937, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture
Round with central electrical components In the 1930s, people gathered around the radio much like we gather around the television today. This radio was designed for stylish hotel lobbies, with its small receivers and speakers hidden behind a futuristic façade. Its round, streamlined shape was—and still is—a modernist departure from the usual boxy radio designs. Its massive size reminds us that the radio was once as much a piece of furniture as a source of news and entertainment. Size: 46 x 43 x 12 in. (116.84 x 109.22 x 30.48 cm) Medium: Mirrored glass, chrome, painted wood, electrical components
