Street Art in Taiwan

When it comes to street art, Taiwan is probably not a country that comes to mind. However, to my surprise, while researching on this, Taiwan has an amazing Street Art scene going on, especially in Kaohsiung. In October 2012, the Kaohsiung City Government have expanded the areas where graffiti artists can paint legally. Ever since then, the street art scene in Kaohsiung has only become more and more popular. 

In 2016, a bunch of local street artist came together to form a group known as the Wallriors. Since the formation of the group, they have covered many places with their amazing street art and murals. Their goal is to spread Street Art across Taiwan and to use street art to give life and spice up older communities. 

A more recent piece of art I found is a mural painted by local artist Bamboo. This mural was just painted earlier this year and is located next to a local Basketball Court. Through the use of street art, the once old and gritty wall has been transformed into a piece of art that not only revitalises the place but also has become an attraction. Throughout Taiwan, there are many murals that have been painted to give new life to older buildings or to transform boring industrial buildings into a piece of captivating art.

The street art scene in Taiwan has only just really started blooming in the last couple of years and will definitely continue to grow. Although it is not an official tourist attraction, a lot of tourists do take pictures with the murals and help publicise them, making the street art a point of interest worth visiting.
