The Space in My Closet Where Your Things Used To Be || Shawn Mendes
Description: Shawn rids his apartment of every trace of you, except for the closet.
A/N: I’ve had the title of this stuck in my head for weeks and tried to force it into a poem and that shit did not work, but it worked into a fic! So enjoy!
Word Count: 1.9k
Shawn hadn’t slept through the night in seventeen days. Your shirt was still sitting on his dresser, your shoes at the end of the bed and your hair ties littered the nightstand. The curtains you insisted he get were still pulled shut and hadn’t been opened in seventeen days. The wall color was a piercing reminder of the trip you two took to Home Depot to pick out. The sheets still smelt like you, but it was fading. He didn’t want it to fade.
His closet doors were still open since you could never remember to close them. The dress you wore to his album party reflected the light that occasionally was turned on if Shawn had enough energy to do it. Your long parka, perfect for Canada’s winters, grazed the carpet right next to your old duck boots.
Every night, when he woke up, his eyes raked the room and traced over all of your belongings that were still there. You left for your parents’ house seventeen days ago to think things through, and Shawn hadn’t heard from you since.
Maybe it wasn’t a good time to be in a committed relationship. Maybe he should’ve fought a little harder. Maybe he should’ve just let this go and tried to move on.
But he couldn’t.
There were reminders everywhere.
So Shawn sat up in bed for the eighteenth time and stared straight ahead at the packed tight closet. He could feel his eyelids wanting to close, but his head just wouldn’t let them. He squeezed his eyes shut as he could hear your voice in the back of his head telling him you just needed time. Not sure how much time. Probably a lot of it.
He ran his hands harshly over his face and rested his elbows on his knees. He glanced over at the time. 3:18 am. He pulled himself out of bed and trudged to the bathroom. He could barely look at himself in the mirror without grimacing. He washed his face and splashed some water, hoping somehow it would get his mind off things. Like that would even work.
He made his way back to your — his — room. He leaned in the doorway and looked back and forth between your items. Before he could let himself hesitate, he flicked the light on, pulled out a few laundry baskets and started throwing your things in it without looking at them twice.
He didn’t let himself look at the graphic on your shirt or the scuffs on your shoes. He didn’t count the hair ties like he used to as you’d laugh. He didn’t remember the trip to Home Depot or the nights you spent together. He didn’t remember winters in Canada, and he didn’t dare to think about the album release party.
He threw them all in carefully, knowing you’d be back for your things eventually. He grabbed your things in the closet in one swift motion, not bothering to take them off the hangers and fold them.
He washed the sheets, put up the old curtains and thought about ordering a new paint color, maybe a wallpaper. If you were going to leave, he was going to make sure he forgot you. He set the baskets near the front door, where he hoped he wouldn’t see it until you came to pick it up. He turned around without a second glance and went back to his room.
He made his bed with fresh sheets and closed the blinds and laid down. The room was clean and put back to what it looked like over two years ago. Yet he still stared forward. Looking at the space in his closet where your things used to be. He couldn’t bring himself to space out his clothes to cover it.
Because once it was covered.
You really were gone.
Night eighteen came and went as he was restless again. Morning eighteen was met with a granola bar, a very large mug of coffee and his back turned to the baskets heaping with your things. He went through his schedule in his head, remembering he had plenty of meetings today. He made himself another mug of coffee, poured it in his to-go cup and locked the door behind him. Maybe they wouldn’t notice the bags under his eyes today.
—
You hadn’t slept in eighteen days. Your childhood bed wasn’t nearly as comfortable as you remembered it. Your parents' concerned comments were enough to drive you crazy, and the look on Shawn’s face kept you up at night.
For the most part, your old room was free of any reminders of Shawn, except for his guitar pick on your dresser and a letter he sent you within the first month of your relationship was pinned to your corkboard. You couldn’t read it from the bed, but every night when you inevitably woke up, you stared at it.
Which is why you were here in front of the apartment and praying Shawn wasn’t home yet still hoping he was. With a deep breath, you unlocked the door, but couldn’t quite push it open. You pushed your shoulder against it and heard something fall. You slowly slipped in and looked at what you had spilled.
There were your things, in a pile, on the ground, next to a tipped over laundry basket and surrounded by a few other. Maybe getting your things would go a lot quicker than you thought.
You went in the hall closet and pulled out your a few suitcases you had kept there. You folded your things and placed them in neatly, knowing it’d make it easier to unpack, but in the back of your head, you knew why you were taking your time.
You set the empty baskets in the kitchen and quickly glanced around each room to see if you or Shawn forgot anything.
You stared at the door to your bedroom a little too long. Not wanting to see a room that was so comfortable, but so different from how you left it. You took a deep breath and walked in, instantly feeling like you did when you first stayed the night. Uncomfortable. This wasn’t your home.
You walked slowly around the room, glancing in every drawer and looking at every shelf. Every trace of you was gone.
Until you turned around and saw the closet wide open.
You slowly sat down on the bed that didn’t feel the same and stared at the empty space in your — his — closet.
Every ticking clock and car horn went silent. All you could see was the empty space, and all you could hear was the ringing in your eardrums.
Which is why you didn’t hear Shawn walk in.
He knew you were here before he even opened the door since your car was parked in your usual spot next to his upfront.
He thought he’d see you right away when he walked through the back door, but instead, he was met with three half-packed suitcases. He walked down the hallway slowly and peeked through the crack in his bedroom door.
His heart nearly stopped as he saw you sitting on the end of the bed, staring at the same spot he’d been looking at for eighteen days.
With every little ounce of confidence he had in him, he slowly pushed opened the door and leaned against the doorframe. You knew he was there, but you didn’t look at him. Neither of you said a word.
“Where were you?” You finally said.
“Meetings,” he replied. “Tour starts in two months.”
You nodded your head at what he was saying, still not meeting his eyes.
“Do you even want to talk?” He said softly, trying not to sound too angry so that you wouldn’t shut down.
Your eyes finally left the closet and looked down at your shaking hands.
“What’s left to talk about?” You said with that sound in the back of your throat that meant you were holding back tears.
Shawn sighed as he walked into the room and sat on the side of the bed. Your shoulders were barely a centimeter apart.
“I can’t just let this go, [Y/N],” he paused for a moment. “I’m not just going to let you go.”
You glanced over at him and watched his knee bounce up and down.
“Then what do we do?”
Both of you stayed silent, wanting this to work but scared it wouldn’t.
“Why didn’t you move your clothes over?” You finally said as you stared back at the closet.
Shawn turned and looked at the same spot you were looking at. He didn’t have to think up an excuse for that.
“Because then there’d be no trace of you,” he turned and looked at you, and you did the same. “I’m not ready to let you go,” he choked out.
“You leave in two months, Shawn. You’re in meetings and rehearsals every day until then. How do we fix us when you don’t have any time?” You said as you pulled your legs up on to the bed, fully turning to face him.
He took his time looking over you. Your hair was in a knot on your head, a look you only pulled when your hair needed a wash. You were wearing your older brother’s sweatshirt that was a few sizes too big. You were wearing your crocs with your favorite dog socks. Your eyes looked just like his: exhausted and just a little hopeful.
“Come with me,” he said.
“You hated when I went with you last time.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Yes, you did. I didn’t know anyone else, and I wouldn’t leave you alone for the entire month I was there,” you said, feeling yourself start to get angry.
“And now you know everyone. I know you’ve been talking to Brian. I know Andrew’s checked up on you, and so have Connor and Zubin.”
You didn’t respond and instead stared back at the closet, trying to think of what to say next.
“It’s either you come on tour with me, or we can’t do this anymore,” Shawn said softly. “I’m not trying to give you an ultimatum, but I don’t know what else I can do, hun. I’m really trying here.”
“I know,” you said quietly. You thought for a moment longer. Your head was telling you to go back to your parents' house and try to move on. But your heart knew you wouldn’t sleep. You’d never get over this.
Shawn hesitated for a moment before softly resting his hand on your knee. You shared a look. Shawn couldn’t quite tell what your eyes were saying this time. He could see the hesitation. The concern. But still, there was hope. And, with that hope, maybe still a little bit of love.
Without another word, you stood up and walked out of the room. Shawn froze, thinking you had made the decision to leave without saying another word to him. Before he could let the thought sink in, you were rolling in your half-packed luggage into the room.
You didn’t look at him as you pulled your things out and started hanging them back up, but you knew he was smiling. You turned around and proved yourself right as you smiled for the first time in eighteen days.
“Are you going to help, or what?” You said with just the right amount of sarcasm in your voice. Shawn stood up and wrapped his arms around you from behind, pressing a kiss to the side of your head, as you filled the empty space in your closet where your things used to be, and where your things would stay.

Berri House Building Extension in Montréal
1 Feb 2022
Architect: Thomas Balaban Architecte
Location: Montréal, Québec, Canada
Photos: Adrien Williams
Berri House, Montréal
The Berri House, a small residential extension, challenged Thomas Balaban Architecte to squeeze as much home as possible out of a 130 sqm centenary carriage house, while taking maximum advantage of its unique urban situation.
The project is situated on a short and narrow street in Montreal’s sought-after Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood. The irregularly shaped lot resulted from a subdivision of a large property spanning two streets. The cadastral transaction left the new lot with only a small side yard and an boxed-in exterior space at the back. Interesting lots such as Berri’s, corner stores, car repair shops, and small industrial buildings scattered among traditional brick duplexes and triplexes make up the area’s rich architectural heritage. It has earned the neighbourhood its protected status, as well as bylaws preserving its architectural character and limiting increases in height. This brought about the project’s principal challenge: how to expand the footprint of the building, while preserving its character and its very limited outdoor space.
The new floating extension on the second floor protects this precious outdoor space, while adding the additional breathing room a young family needed. By setting back and elevating the new volume, the addition yields the front and rear of the lot to its two existing mature maples. The position preserves the tree’s important presence in the streetscape and prevents damage to their root systems, while creating a sheltered private garden below.
Clad in flat galvanized panels, the floating volume reflects natural light into the garden below. The reflective material endows the extension with a feeling of lightness. Its flat detailing and modern geometry contrast against the brick masonry of the old building. It also reduces the visual impact on adjacent houses situated in tight quarters, showcasing an abstract palette of sky and foliage. Strategically placed openings endow the living spaces with privacy, while full height windows bring much needed light into the house via open circulation spaces.
Built in 1910, the carriage house had undergone several renovations. The exterior appearance of the existing structure is largely preserved, its brick facade repaired, and windows replaced. Inside, layers of interventions were removed. Stripped down to the original shell of the coach house, the new interiors seek to celebrate the natural qualities of the utilitarian structure and the beauty of everyday construction. Raw materials, rich textures, and minimal detailing play off softer modern furnishings and the family’s expansive collection of art. Plywood plays the role of wallpaper (think William Morris meets Home Depot), and steel structure imitates wood joinery, giving the project an intemporal quality where mid-century modern meets construction site in a stripped-down Victorian shell.
At the entrance, in the northwest corner, a new opening made through the first floor connects three levels via an ultra minimal and transparent stair. It combines entry closet, circulation, and sculptural effect. The transparency of the wireframe stair in combination with the sliding divisions give the small footprint of the ground floor much needed space to breathe.
Upstairs, the kitchen, dining room, office, and stair are organized around a central structural column built out to enclose a powder-room, stationary closet, stereo equipment, and a coffee station. The compact arrangement confers both connection and visual privacy. Strategically placed windows and existing skylights punctuate the spaces, bringing in natural light and a connection to the exterior, ultimately providing a changing, natural counterpoint to the abstract artwork and photography on display in the house.

Modern Farmhouse with Blue Exterior
Undoubtedly, modern farmhouse is by far the most popular home style these days. We have seen many modern farmhouses with white exteriors, Joanna Gaines-inspired farmhouses, new-construction modern farmhouses, board and batten modern farmhouses and more recently, a modern farmhouse with black and white interiors, but a modern farmhouse with blue exterior is something new to me, and, just between you and I, it feels very refreshing!
Take notes on this beautiful home built by one of my favorite builders, M House Development (previously featured here), and make sure to pin these inspiring home decor pictures!
Modern Farmhouse with Blue Exterior
This is the kind of home that makes you turn your head if you’re walking by! What a curb-appeal!!!
Exterior Paint Color
The exterior paint color is Sherwin Williams SW 6230 Rainstorm.
Roof
The home combines shingle roof and metal roof. This is a very popular combination for modern farmhouses.
Shutters
One of my favorite things about this home, besides the stunning architectural details, is the custom “barn door-inspired” shutters.
Exterior Trim
The exterior trim paint color is Benjamin Moore White Dove.
Exterior Lighting: Westinghouse Lighting Outdoor Barn Light
Porch Decor
A front porch always adds so much to the curb-appeal to a home. In fact, I don’t think I ever disliked a home with a front porch.

Backsplash
Backsplash: Beveled Ceramic Wall Tile 3″x6″
Upper Cabinets

Appliance Garage
A well-designed appliance garage is found on the left, just above the bread compartment. This is the ideal place to hide the toaster. Also, notice the electric outlet inside the cabinet.
Lower Cabinets
The lower cabinets are Maple, stained Phantom.
Sink & Faucet
I love how the dark lower cabinets contrast with the white upper cabinetry. The hutch adds interest to the kitchen as well.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram I first asked to feature Tamara Anka’s home (from CitrineLiving & @citrineliving) because I always loved the classic and custom feel it has. Little did I know that she was budget conscious and very smart when it comes to making a home look a million dollars without having to break the bank. I honestly can’t tell how much she inspired me. She even has woken me up about where to shop in Canada! I don’t say this often but I feel that it can be very frustrating to shop for your home when you live in Canada. I find that furniture and home décor in general is much more expensive here than in the States and it’s harder to get the right look for less. Tamara’s home is proof that it’s possible to create a home that is classy using many Canadian companies and shopping online – which I also find to be much harder to do than in America. I am so proud, happy and inspired by today’s Beautiful Homes of Instagram and I think you will love to see this home, regardless where you live! Beautiful Homes of Instagram We’re two Designers/DIYers who built our home seven years ago, with the intention of flipping it within a year or two. It was built for a buyer in mind, so at the time, we wanted to keep the cost as low as possible by making budget conscious decisions, and create a home that would be enticing for the market. We love our private, wooded lot so much that we ended up staying and still call this spot our home today. We finished the majority of the interior ourselves – laying hardwood floors, installing all the trim, woodwork and moldings, and painted every inch! Our home is constantly evolving as we add new DIY projects to the list and one day we dream of building another home, or renovating this one to suit our needs. Exterior Details Our home has a small footprint, 1700 sq ft – and it was crucial to us to create a feeling of openness and give the impression that it is larger than it is. Keeping an open floor plan and raising the ceilings to 11 feet in the living/family room and main hallway/transition space, was an integral part of creating this feeling in our home. Stone and window shutters adds to the curb-appeal of this custom home. Exterior Lighting The exterior pendant is Crestwood Pendant by Progress Lighting. Front Door The black front door paint color is Canadian Tire Premier Exterior Paint – Midnight, Semi-gloss. What a timeless paint color! Foyer Get ready to fall in love with this beautifully appointed home! Paint color is “Collingwood OC-28 Benjamin Moore”. Dark Grey Interior Door Paint Color Dark Grey Interior Door Paint Color: Behr Cracked Pepper. Decor The entryway mirror and decor are all from HomeSense. Rug is Home Depot. Console Table & Lighting Console table is from HomeSense. Entryway Lighting: Progress Lighting – Peidmont – hand-painted by the homeowner for a two tone look. Wainscoting Adding woodwork and details with a ‘custom’ feel was an important part for the homeowner – the wainscotting is applied molding and chair rail, all painted a bright, crisp white. All Trim/Wainscotting Paint Color: Ultra Pure White by Behr. Dining room The dining room with it’s black walls is always a conversation piece in our home! It’s small but enveloping, and guests always love to linger on the settee after a meal with good conversation! I wanted the feeling of this room to be warm, welcoming and transportive – to give you the feeling that you were elsewhere other than your everyday world! The plan is to one day add built-in shelving flanking the settee as well. Spring Tablescape Decor Blue and white is a passion of mine, having grown up around it and having a mother who collected it as well, it’s become a key part of the decor in our home. Dining room Decor: All pieces are from HomeSense. Upholstered Stools – Bouclair. Contrast I am loving the contrast the dark paint color in the dining room creates against the neutral color on the remaining walls. Lighting Lighting is from Wayfair – Lighting is Varnum 4-Light Foyer Pendant by Three Posts in Vintage Gold – with shades added from Amazon. Paint Color Paint color is Cracked Pepper PPU18-1 by Behr. Rug Rug is from Wayfair. Hardwood Dark hardwood flooring is Mixed grade oak with a walnut stain. Drapery The dining room features custom drapes from Tonic Living. Transoms Large openings with architectural details such as transoms, between the entryway, dining room and main hallway creates visual interest. Kitchen The kitchen was designed around an ‘old-world-traditional-meets-modern’ look. The back wall, as the focal point, has no upper cabinets and it features counter to ceiling white subway tile. The barstools were the driving force behind the kitchen and the jumping off point for the design of this space! Kitchen Island Kitchen island features Shaker style cabinet with added trim – MDF, Black. Kitchen Island Dimension : 7’2″ x 3’7″ Kitchen Barstools: HomeSense. Lighting Kitchen Lighting: Progress Lighting – Assembly Hall Pendants. Hardware Kitchen Cabinet Hardware: Chrome Pulls are Hickory Hardware Studio Collection Bright Nickel Pull. Ceilings are 9’. Cabinet Perimeter cabinets are Shaker style with added trim – Polyester, Ivory. Farmhouse Sink: Ikea. Kitchen Runner The homeowner added a blue and white striped runner and some turkish towels to bring a coastal vibe to her ivory kitchen. Backsplash The backsplash is white ceramic subway tile with marble inset above stove. Countertop Countertop is Quartz in Misty Carrera. Kitchen Shelves Having an open shelf cabinet is a practical, economical and beautiful addition to any kitchen. Kitchen Candle Sconces – The Bombay Company. Family room Our home has an east coast traditional look and feel, and my style is collected and curated. No matching sets of furniture in here! Open Layout The kitchen opens directly to the family room. Fireplace Tamara added molding and trim above the fireplace to give it a custom look. Doesn’t it look great? Lighting is Progress Lighting – P4618 – Cherish – Six Light Circle Chandelier. Rug is from HomeSense. Bookshelf Tamara also built the bookshelves with her husband to add more storage and interest to their living room. I really like how clean and simple she kept them. Ottoman Living Room Ottoman: The Bay (it’s very old!), new feet and recovered many times! Lamps are HomeSense. Color Scheme The homeowner used the same mix of pillows on both sofas, with one different pattern on each. Lighting Tamara is always changing the lighting in her home to change the mood of the spaces. These wine barrel chandeliers add a more rustic/farmhouse feel to the living room. Shelf lighting is from Wayfair. Ceiling Family room and hallway ceilings are 11′. Pillows Pillows are from Tonic Living and HomeSense. Aren’t they stunning?! Sofas The grey sofas are Decor-rest by Steven and Chris. Paint Color Main Wall Color Throughout (entryway, hallway, living/family room): “Benjamin Moore Collingwood“. Mirrored Buffet The mirrored buffet is from Structube. Blue & White Decor is from HomeSense. Flooring The beautiful dark hardwood flooring brings warmth to this living room. Flooring is Mixed grade oak with a walnut stain. Bathroom Tamara just gave this bathroom a makeover and it looks amazing! The faux grasscloth vinyl wallpaper looks the same as real grasscloth but it’s ideal for wet spaces such as bathrooms. Wallpaper is Norwall Wallcoverings Inc. from Wayfair. Lighting is Darby Home Co. Master Bedroom The master bedroom paint color is discontinued but closest match is Lily White by Benjamin Moore. Lighting is Canadian Tire with shades added from Amazon (Furnishland Set of 5 Off White Chandelier shade, 4-inch Bottom Diameter, 4-inch Height, Cotton). Blue & White I love how crisp and timeless blue and white bedding looks. The pillow combination complements the classic look. Bedding and pillows are from HomeSense. Bed Accessories The accessories are also from HomeSense. Nightstand Nightstand: Vintage Accent Table: HomeSense Bed Bed is Versailles – King Size Bed by Structube in Charcoal – $879 Outdoors The backyard/patio was designed with three zones in mind – lounge, dining, fireplace/conversation. Dream Backyard It was crucial to create an extension of the interior of our home and feel as though it was another room that welcomes guests to linger, relax and unwind. Table & Chairs Table and chairs are from Canadian Tire. Tablescape Decor is from Home Sense. Patio Decor Blue and white decor adds a classic feel to this patio. Gazebo Outdoor Furniture/Decor: All items are from the Canadian Tire Canvas Line and some other pieces the homeowner had for many years. Private Party Accessories & Pillows: Canadian Tire & HomeSense. Between Friends Isn’t this a great place to have some friend over? Outdoor Bar Cart I like the idea of having a bar cart outdoors so you don’t have to keep going inside of the house to grab a drink or snacks. Outdoor Chair Outdoor chair is from Canadian Tire. French Doors French doors open to a backyard that was truly designed for entertainment. Exterior lighting is by Progress Lighting. Black Shutters The black shutters and window boxes are painted in Canadian Tire Premier Exterior Paint – Midnight, Semi-gloss. Lounge Area This area features an outdoor fireplace and comfy chairs.
