Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
That's no leaping lizard-- it's a flying frog! More specifically, it's Wallace's flying frog. This species gets its name from the webbing between its fingers and its elbows that allow it to glide from one tree branch to another, sometimes over distances of 15 m (50 ft)!

Animal of the Day!
Wallace’s Flying Frog (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus)
(Photo from Biosphoto)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Malaysia; Borneo
Size (Weight/Length)- 10 cm
Diet- Insects
Cool Facts- It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a… frog? The Wallace's flying frog, sadly, can’t truly fly. Instead, a thin fringe of skin between their toes and fingers allow them to parachute to the forest floor from their arboreal home. These frogs only fall with style when threatened by a predator or searching for prey. Their feet help them to glide up to 50 meters to a neighboring tree or to the ground. The Wallace's flying frog's giant toes help them to stick safely to trees after a quick glide. During the breeding season, females lay a nest of eggs on a branch above a pond or stream. As the tadpoles hatch, the nest breaks apart and drops the babies into the water below.
Rating- 12/10 (I am, I am, I am Superfrog and I can do anything.)

My contribution to @amphibianaday's 2023 amphibian pride parade.
Went with a Wallace's flying frog/Abah river flying frog/gliding frog/flying leaf frog/parachute frog (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus) because I have adored them since the first time I saw a photo of one. It can glide from tree to tree! How cool is that? Like a flying squirrel, except frog.
Drew this while waiting for the bus, and on the bus, with some touch-up at home.

Wallace's Flying Frog: This South Asian/Indonesian species’ most notable feature is that it can glide up to 15 metres by spreading the webbing between its toes! It’s not the only species that does this, (R. dennysii, for example, does as well,) but it is one of the largest and most striking. They also have a few other quirks: instead of laying eggs directly in water, the female creates a foam nest in the foliage above a small pool and the tadpoles drop into it when they hatch. Recent research discovered that when fed high amounts of carotenoids, (pigments in certain plants, fungi, and bacteria,) they’re able to change colour in response to environmental changes. And they’ve been known to eat small birds in the wild!
Surinam Toad: Found in Northern South America, this frog is most known for its odd brooding habits. The female’s back encloses around her fertilized eggs, embedding them into her skin. She keeps them there for the entire 3-5 months it takes the tadpoles to develop inside the eggs before they emerge as full froglets. Since they’re entirely aquatic and also tongueless, they’re opportunistic hunters and likely lunge at anything that passes by – maybe even their own species, since some have been found with frog skin in their stomachs! In order to have maximum suction for capturing prey, its major organs can move down a third of the length of its body.

Found out about the Wallace's Flying Tree Frog, and looking at it I just thought... This is Frog Fives. This is the frog the Dominoes are. Like they WOULD be the frogs to LAUNCH themselves and glide.
I can easily imagine Fives' kama patterns on the webbing between the toes.

Maybe don't wave those big slappers in front of Paraguay's the Galaxy's most aggressive species of frog...
My first thought when I saw that image was "Jazz Hands Frog" and I immediately knew what I had to do. Echo would very much like to be anywhere else actually...

Steven: some people think a precious stone is a gem or jewel but it can also be a regular stone that means a lot to you
Wallace: dont speak i know just what youre saying, something about how beautiful and strong i am probably

Leon: i'll go in whatever direction the wind takes me, and if i am too heavy for wind to move me around i will probably just lay down and die here
Geeta: if we do this we do it my way [cut to a bunch of explosions. corpses & debris fly through the air] okay maybe i should be more open to ideas

Catch Up Tag!
Thanks for the tag, @thecomfywriter!
<3 Favorite color - Green is my favorite right now, especially light sage green or dark Sacramento kind of green. I like my greens a little more blue than yellow. I like a kind of soft or champagne sort of pink too.
<3 Last fun activity - The vocal lessons I take are always fun but other than that, I recently started playing Cult of the Lamb and it's dangerously addicting.
<3 Song (s) stuck in my head - Good Luck, Babe! by Chappell Roan
<3 Favorite food - I love dim sum. It takes me back to my childhood and it's oh so good.
<3 Spicy/sweet/savory - Sweet or savory depending on my mood. I tend toward sweet though...I have a very big sweet tooth.
<3 Last thing I googled - I think it was just the hours of a local store so I didn't just show up 30 minutes before closing.
<3 Current obsession - Writing, reading, I info-dumped all over my partner after I watched a documentary on Wallace's flying frogs (look them up, they're really cool)
<3 Something you're looking forward to - Finishing this novel I've been working on the last few months though it'll probably be a while!

I as an avid look-up-fun-facts-about-animals-because-I-find-it-entertaining person am here to jump on the trend.
This right here is Wallace’s Flying Frog. It may not actually fly, but it does glide and look super goofy while doing so.
Oh?? A trend? Is this a trend now? To send me an animal ask? that sounds fun let's keep doing that
HAHSGAH OH ITS MAGNIFICENT. IT LOOKS SO SMUG. SO SMUG AND YET SO INCREDIBLY STUPID. It looks like it would mansplain your job to you while doing whatever the shit that is.
It's so dumb, but has the air of a professional ballerina. Oh, I love it so. Thank you
Also, I can't find your profile. Did you die and deactivate immediately after sending this ask
#what bullshit. i love that something that dumb looking actually exists#morro irl account#irl morro#ninjago#answering asks#cookii-moon

idk ur ocs well so here is an ask that's a free pass to say anything and everything you wanna about one of em (apologies on no further prompting if this is too broad ummmm. try to give an elevator pitch summary of who they are❓🤔 or one of their biggest goals in life if they got one)
I thought I answered this question ngl 💀
SO main goal in the story in general is them moving out of the city to live and do their lives, the reason they moved in was because it was cheap, and promised monsters a better life! That's what the authority promised, the city itself is ruined down, its new york but monster. But they do get caught up in the authorities because surprise surprise Melody's old stalker is apart of the authority ‼️ so that's basically the plot
Pitch wise, like I said main goal is to move away. But say for melody and ares, they want to move away because they want to start a family and to try and at least not continue the familial trauma 😭 Tad wants to start her own thing, buisness, newspaper, whatever and be away from her family since they tie her down so much, and be her own person. Scout doesn't really have a plan because he has no family that supports him. He is with the flow of what he wants to do, but maybe to continue his baseball thing to support himself. Tldr at the end they all calm down no more excitement, just like peace.
BUT random facts.
Ares: he's based of Zuke from No straight roads, he is the eldest of 4 (biological) kids, his Prosthetic arm is homemade, he stands at 6 foot 5, Likes to bird watch, is Jamacian!!! And is a tiger shark guy.
Melody: she's not really based off of anyone in particular, is the baby of 3 girls. her favorite brand is baby phat (monster version), she can wiggle her antenna, and that hair around her body is FUR. DENSE FUR. And she does have wings!! They just shrink down to fit in her clothes. And is the shortest.
Tad: boy she's the middle child of 6 kids, shes a bit of a jack of all trades, Likes to start projects and never finishes them, is the oldest out of the four (27), is based off Kanamori from keep your hands off eizouken. Based off a Wallace flying frog, AND is from Malaysia
Scout: Only child 😭, trans guy, he's actually the final guy of the group I worked on, has a fasnation with the forest and loves to talk about bears, sounds like Ryuji from persona, his actual name is Scott, is the second shortest, has a collection of bottle caps. and is based of a Vampire bat, kinda does have fur like Mel to

The winners of the first four polls are Wallace's flying frog, the golden poison dart frog, the Indian purple frog, and the European green toad!
#mod post#Well-fought especially to the Surinam toad (flat fuck) voters! You were very vocal in the notes LMAO#Good news for you there's some other flat fucks coming up with the African dwarf frog and the Bornean flat-headed frog#Although they're perhaps not quite as flat

Alfred Russel Wallace, co-developer of the theory of evolution, was born #OTD 200 years ago (8 Jan. 1823 - 7 Nov. 1913). Here is his original sketch (1855) and published drawing (1869) of a frog previously unknown to science and now named in his honor, Wallace's Flying Frog (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus).
2. Original field study by Wallace from Borneo, 1855 [Alfed Russel Wallace Memorial Fund CC BY-NC-SA 4.0]
Published illustration in Wallace's book _The Malay archipelago : the land of the Orang-Utan, and the bird of paradise : a narrative of travel, with studies of man and nature_, 1869, p. 60. Engraving by John Gerrard Keulemans after an original drawing by Wallace. [BHL/CC-0]
Excerpt from Wallace's book The Malay Archipelago p. 59: “One of the most curious and interesting reptiles which I met with in Borneo was a large tree-frog, which was brought me by one of the Chinese workmen. He assured me that he had seen it come down, in a slanting direction, from a high tree, as if it flew."
And that's why it's better to say he was the first to scientifically describe a flying frog and not say he "discovered" it...and surely the Chinese worker who brought it to him wasn't the first to see one in action either, local Indigenous people likely knew about them for ages.
