📸@wallacechanart I had to think of a way to capture the light – as if the butterfly were ever-fluttering, under the sun and in the wind. Light is important, it's not everything. Shadows play a part, too. · I carved pathways for the light so that when it reached the surface of the crystal or the titanium, it would encounter more opportunities for reflection. From @1843mag: When jeweller Wallace Chan was first asked to carve an imitation Han-dynasty jade cicada he was an 18-year-old apprentice and wondered why there was a demand for something so ugly. But the more he looked into the history of the cicada, the more excited he became. These creatures – which spend much of their lives underground, and then come to the surface to shed their outer shell and reveal themselves fully formed – are symbols of resurrection. Having spent over 40 years carving this symbolic insect, Chan has perfected his craft.
