Main theme of ISAT music analysis yaaayyyy yippieeee
big thanks to @ asterythm on discord for the music sheets i am forever endebted to you.
here's their post with their stuff! GO GIVE THEM SOME LOVE DICTATION IS HORRIFIC.
https://www.tumblr.com/starsalive/755820156323774464/isat-title-theme-piano-sheet-music-for-solo
[somebody who actually knows what they're doing @cocoisindecisive responded with corrections, so the edits are gonna be in these brackets!! i couldn't leave this unedited because it felt wrong]
Since they've only done the main theme, i'm just gonna pick apart that. Big fuckin text post + absolute raving and ranting!! please tell me there is a functional line break here PLEA
ISAT's OST is very economical in that it constantly reuses one central motif. I want to go on a very brief tangent to cover this motif because I feel like that's worth doing.
---What the fuck is a motif?---
i want you to repeat something with me, okay? deep breaths.
A MOTIF AND A LIETMOTIF ARE NOT THE SAME. A MOTIF AND A LIETMOTIF ARE NOT THE SAME !!! PLEASE DONT USE THEM INTERCHANGEABLY MY HEART HURTS EVERY TIME !!!!!! thank you.
so, a motif is a little piece of music information - usually a melody, but not always, i think? - that is reused and changed. It doesn't represent anything, really. That's the difference between it and a lietmotif - a lietmotif represents a person place or thing, and a motif just doesn't.
---Great, So what's the motif?---
it has two parts, this first part:
(this is repeated with the last 3 notes moved down a tone.)
*[this is a LIE how did i think this, i literally just had to LOOK]*
this is the second part:
(which has the last part change a little bit when repeated in order to resolve.)
There's some nice rythmn made with the dotted crotchet and the quaver, but nothing crazy like syncopation. It's mostly conjunct, but there's one or two little leaps in the melody. It's a fairly basic melody -- perfect for changing and adjusting to the needs of each piece.
this is used in every single track in the game! I'm not kidding, it's in every single one, try and listen for it! it's a very smart use of a motif. Onto the actual piece of music!
[to quote directly - "you dont mention that the "second part" of the motif is very similar to the first statement but with it's first measure having it's intervals being inverted (and the final eighth note keeping the pitch of the dotted quarter note). or that the second measure is again similar just that the missing C from the first measure is now the downbeat of this measure, and the B that used to be the downbeat is now and 8th note preceding the new downbeat. (plus the first statement of this second iteration changing the final three pitches so that its a stepwise walkdown from G to E)" - i knew something was different, just not what exactly, thank you for correcting me]
--Main Theme--
It uses the motif as it's melody (see above), and while I won't cover that again, I will cover the harmony!
The instruments are fairly simple, there's a chiptune piano and some kind of strings (?) helping with the harmony in the background. The two play together throughout.
While the key will obviously change between pieces and songs, harmony is a very important and sneaky way to hide meaning in a piece. Harmonies are also very hard and hurt my brain, so if i'm wrong feel free to tell me. (Also i hate reading bass clef)
[Dsus -> Esus4 -> G (kindanotreally) -> A sus4 -> A // ii -> iii -> V -> VI]
A lot of suspended chords - suspended chords don't really hold on major or minor, so this leaves it feeling a bit unstable + airy. But, each suspended chord eventually resolves onto the major of each chord, so it still feels major.
The thing that decides if a chord is major or minor is generally the second note in that chord - 3 semitones away from the first note on a major chord, and 2 on a minor chord. Suspended chords have the second note be either 1 (BUT IT'S NAMED SUS2????) or 4 semitones away (sus2 / sus4). This lets it dance around either, and it keeps tension until it resolves into either one.
[ to quote directly again - "and then the chord progression you outline seems like gobbeldygook to me. measure 1's downbeat is not a Dsus chord, it's pretty clearly a power chord, and it leads into an F not an Esus4. measure 2 is mostly fine though, only think is that it is definitelly a G chord! if you wanted to be pedantic you could say it's a Gomit5 but i really wouldnt bother specifiying that
and whoops your roman numerals are wrong! the big issue is that this 2 bar phrase DOES contain a tonic chord. in fact its the first of the measure! this is pretty clearly in D dorian, but i think you've confused it for C major since they share a key signature. but nope! given that correction and the ones above the roman numerals looks more like a [I -> III -> IV -> V]." YEAH IM REALLY BAD AT THIS I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY 😭😭]
[Dsus -> F -> G -> Gsus -> Asus4 (kind of???????) // ii -> IV -> V -> ii -> ii]
this little countermelody continues (i'm not sure if it's because i'm looking at the piano version and OOPS it's too late now, or because there is just a countermelody. what am i saying this would be countermelody either way????) and layers quavers over a crochet and minim harmony.
The harmony itself mirrors the same as before - loads of sus chords with occasional, brief resolutions to major chords. But, what's weird is that I haven't seen a single I / Tonic chord yet? there's not a single chord that's just the first note of the key. That's kinda weird - most pieces even start with that. There's something there - technically, we're not at the start of the journey, we're at the very end of it, the very end of this year-long journey that all of the character's have been taking.
[ corrections: "closer with measures 3-4 its just that measure 4 is an an Asus4 to A and that adjusting for you being in the wrong key the chord progression is still that same [I -> III -> IV -> V]" ]
[Esus -> Gsus2 -> C -> Esus -> Gsus2 -> C // iii -> V -> I -> iii -> V -> I]
WHOOPS I LIED. there's the tonic chord! there's C!
There's a good reason for a tonic to appear here, though - we have a perfect cadence, and that is very interesting.
Those roman numerals are about the placement of a chord within a key. kind of - it's important for stuff. A cadence is the harmonic ending to a phrase - in this case, a perfect cadence, from V -> I. This sounds "complete" to our ears, it feels like the piece could end there. what's weird is that it repeats twice, and keeps going on the second one. Furthermore, the melodic phrase is ending here, the motif is ending. This would be a far more "complete" ending if it stopped here. But it doesn't.
It changes from block chords to ostinatos (MIGHT BE THE WRONG NAME.), but each of these semi quaver / demi semi quaver progressions return back to one note while playing out a countermelody at the same time, still allowing for some kind of harmony. This change also builds up the pace in the piece, letting it build to the ending - this is the only thing that really drives the piece beyond this point, this building rythmn. Even then, it stops on this little crotchet chord! And then keeps going, into what is probably the most interesting part.
[corrections - "a couple of things wrong with this one. first of all i analyzed the chords for measures 5-8 as [Fmaj7 -> Gadd9 -> Amin7 -> Cmaj7-> Fmaj7 -> Gadd9 -> E -> A] with roman numerals: [III-> IV -> V -> V/III -> III -> IV -> V/V -> V]. no PAC here! also, even if this was actually in the key of C major there is no V -> I in the bass and none of the soprano movement need to be an actual PAC. just a bunch of movements by fifth :]. you say the rythym is the only thing pushing the piece forward, and while it sure is definitely a fun effect that's building some nice tension the constant movement by fifth's is definitely also contributing to the tone. be wary of blaming an entire piece's success on one element!"]
[Asus -> Gsus -> G -> Esus4 // VI -> V -> V -> iii]
In terms of intrumentation, something weird happens here - the chiptune piano falls away into a far more real-sounding one, while the strings stay the same within this section.
in terms of harmony, again! tons of suspended chords, with one or two resolutions that keeps the piece feeling major. This cadence is. Weird. [V -> iii] isn't really a resolution at all, and as far as i could find it doesn't have a formal name the way some others do. some parts resolve (the E notes) but others don't, (the A notes), so it ends up feeling only half-satisfying. This makes sense - the music is gonna loop, because this is game music, so it does make sense to have it not resolve.
But. It resolved perfectly eariler - we did have a perfect cadence. So then, why break into this tiny little two bar ending, that doesn't even resolve? That can smoothly go back onto itself, and also back into the beginning of the piece? This part is quieter, the demi semi quavers have rested back into minims, and it feels a little bit like an anti-climax to the build from earlier - it doesn't feel like a dramatic ending that the build was maybe working towards, more like a quiet moment. Despite that, the texture in this two bar section never thins - the piano is never left behind by the strings - the strings don't get quieter either, just the piano. Why is this two bar section here, then? Why end on this, and not on the part before?
Two bars, huh.
What a strange number to choose.
[corrections - "chord progession is: [A -> G -> E -> A]. i'd argue that the previous secondary dominant to the A tonicized the A, placing us in the key of the domimant (A minor). so because of that i''d say the roman numerals are [I -> VII -> V -> I].
maybe pedantic but i dont think its actually that weird or bizzare of a choice for the chiptune melody to be replaced by an acoustic(-sounding) piano. the isat soundtrack consistently uses both acoustic and virtual instruments! this is just establishing that and letting the listener know to expect more of this specific element of the soundtrack. as title themes tend to do!
and the piece is quite resolved by the end actually. if i believed what you believed about the sheet music and never listened to the track i could see how i could think that, but giving the track a listen and using your ear to sus out details reveals how resolved it actually is!"
thank you for the corrections im real bad at this]

Ok I said I would make a pin full of music so here it is
First off, I mentioned KNOWER. It's a long project that started a really long time ago, but their best stuff is probably coming out like right now. As in, they are just about to release a new album, KNOWER FOREVER. The singles on it are incredible, like I'm The President just comes right out the gate with the fattest walkdown I've ever heard from a horn section. The B section makes it feel like I'm enjoying a song like I would a multiple-course meal. Then Crash The Car just transfixes you. Yes, yes, you should listen to those, but don't neglect the fire they put out in 2017 because you owe it to yourself to watch the live sesh of Overtime:
Oh god this post is gonna make viewing my blog super annoying isn't it
Anyway the next thing I gotta mention is Vulfpeck. These guys are famous for scamming Spotify, basically. They released an album full of 30-second tracks of pure silence, just absolutely nothing, titled Sleepify. They got online and said "Yo guys, help us raise money for a free concert by listening to this on loop while you sleep." What they were actually doing was exposing a loophole in the way Spotify calculated royalties, and before they could pull the album (citing "content policy violations," of course), Vulfpeck had already bagged around $20,000, so they put on the completely admission-free Sleepify Tour, which was incredibly fucking based of them.
Vulf went on to become several spin-off projects, all entirely independently released and full of some of the stankiest funk fusion that I cannot stop listening to.
My favorite of these projects, The Fearless Flyers, is headed by Cory Wong, with a guitar idol of mine for 5+ years Mark Lettieri and of course the government subsidized active bass of Joe Dart, but the keystone of the group is no doubt Nate Smith on drums. Dude makes a three-piece set onstage sound like a full kit.
Like just look at what they can do with the added power of sax:
And yeah, I could just talk about those guys, but let's get weirder.
I'm talking modal. The kind of stuff that makes my choir-trained mother cringe inward at the dissonance. Let's talk about the crunchiest, most feral fucking harmonies and keyboard solos that make you question what you thought you knew about chord progressions and key centers.
Obviously anyone super into this stuff will have already heard of Jacob Collier, so I won't show him. But THIS:
I listened to this the first time and it was just.. too much. I put it in its own specific playlist titled "very complex shit" immediately. When I went back to it, enough time had passed and I had learned enough that after way too many listens I can actually follow along with this insanity. This track blew my fucking mind, dude. I have never heard a chorus use so many of the 12 chromatic notes and still sound heavenly. The groove changes add so much texture. The flute solo goes off way too hard. The slower final section is just disgusting syncopation when the drums come back in. Everything about it is incredible, and this album came out in 2007. I am staring back at years of my life I spent not listening to this and ruminating my lack of music theory knowledge. And when I wanted to see if some kind transcribing jazz grad student like June Lee had uploaded anything of System, I found a 2020 reboot with 24 musicians playing System for over twice its original runtime, and guess who did the showstopping final solo??
JACOB FUCKING COLLIER.
Look him up if you don't know. The other musicians I obsess over inspire me. This guy makes me want to quit.

i've never liked the sound of prolonging a double plagal cadence (bVII-IV-I) with an extra V chord (bVII-IV-V-I) because it makes for a sudden awkward lift in the middle of all that gentle lilting downwards, but i've found you can make it much smoother by throwing in a neapolitan chord between the IV and V (so like Bb-F-Db-G-C, maybe with the bassline spelling out the Bb-A-Ab-G walkdown). alternatively you can also just swap the places of the bVII and IV chords (F-Bb-G-C) and make the progression about gentle movement upwards rather than downwards in the first place (in this case the bassline could optionally spell out the A-Bb-B-C walkup). this might all be common knowledge for true pros, but just wanted to share what i've stumbled upon as a composer in case it helps anyone

Actually, you know what?
I wanna drag Patrick to one of those “mining towns”, like the tourist attractions that simulate the Wild West?
JUST to hear him talk about whatever’s inaccurate about it.
I can also see him just absoLUTELY hijacking one of the fake gunfights, tryin’ to teach the actors proper walkdown etiquette. Luckily his guns only shoot webs, so there’s no harm outside of non-proper conduct lmao.
I think the entire experience would be redeemed for him with the food though. Idk… he just feels like the type to appreciate a damn good burger SJWKEJD

Album of the Week #52
Red Rose Speedway
(1973)
by Wings
Overall Rating: 6/10
TL;DR: I love you Paul, but were any of these songs actually done when they were put on the album?
("uhhh if you look closely paul is the only one with the red rose so clearly he's been replaced 3/10)
A year of weeks! I'm going to pretend it didn't take me two years to get to this point!
Overall Thoughts
Today on me refusing to do a band’s most famous album, we have one of the least celebrated Wings album, Red Rose Speedway! I think I originally planned on reviewing this because I thought “Live and Let Die” was on it, but its not :(. While it was originally planned to be it only made it on in a deluxe version that came out years later, and here we stick with the original. So now we’re dealing with the hit single “My Love” as the most famous song from this album. We’ve all heard of that right? Right?
Anyways, nothing on this album is particularly egregious, it’s just not as good as it could be. Maybe I’m being extra tough because this was written by Sir Paul McCartney, but a lot of these songs feel half baked and like he just published some demos. A lot of them don’t seem to have any structure (“Little Lamb Dragonfly,” “Get on the Right Thing”) and some lack any kind of climax that it felt like they were building towards (“Big Red Barn”, “When the Night”). Overall the songs are just stagnant; there isn’t much changing in them. You sit through 3 minutes of the same thing (I mean its usually enjoyable) then it just ends. You’re left sitting there wondering what the point of it was.
I do think that Paul didn’t really care about making a point with this album though. He was in his granny shit era, and a lot of these songs have goofy nursery rhyme qualities (“One More Kiss”), something that I really like about Paul and this album. I think he needed someone to say that something wasn’t quite a full song – heck the last song is a medley of four unfinished songs! All of them are separately really cool, it just feels kinda weird and lazy to stick them all together.
Like usual my favorite song off of the album is the single “My Love,” although again it doesn’t really change that much. Its really just the same soothing chord progressions (with my weakness: a walkdown) and Paul being sappy. It’s good but it certainly not one of my favorites of his.
Final Thoughts
C’mon Paul, we both know you can do better than this. The core is good just add some development! Anything! I’m begging you!

National Engineers Week 2023: Haoyu (Robert) Wang
NYPA is celebrating Engineers Week to recognize the achievements and contributions of our talented engineers in developing and maintaining reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions for New York State.
Name: Haoyu (Robert) Wang
Title: Mechanical Engineer II
Location: WPO
What is a typical day/week like for you?
A typical day for me is collaborating with on-site and home office personnel, providing engineering solutions to NYPA’s generation facilities, and performing calculations and engineering analyses on multiple projects.
What drew you to NYPA as an engineer?
NYPA initiated great projects such as decarbonization and revitalization of the hydro generation plants. The contribution I can make to the organization will bring values to the state and the nation.
Can you describe your professional journey and how it led you to NYPA?
My professional journey started with an engineering/consulting firm, where I gained lots of analytical knowledge on providing engineering solutions. NYPA provided opportunities for engineers like me to integrate into existing and future projects. Also, upon joining NYPA, I am broadening my technical and management background as an engineer. This means a lot for career advancement.
Can you tell us about one of your best accomplishments in engineering? What about this project makes you most proud?
In the past, I performed engineering calculations and piping and equipment stress analyses, as well as site walkdowns, mostly for new power plant design and construction. At NYPA, my biggest project is still ongoing, which is the High Energy Piping program at the Zeltmann Project. It has been a successful journey during the past two years with this project. We identified multiple piping failures and saved the plant from many unexpected and forced outages and made it a safer place to work.
Do you have any advice for engineering students or engineers just entering the workforce?
Yes -- when a new engineer enters the workforce, one may be asked to perform certain tasks using an existing software/program. This would make the engineer’s life easier as everything has been set up but make sure to spend more time to learn and ask the engineering theories on the backend. So, the engineer will understand how the process works and it will be helpful in a long run.
What drew you into the discipline of engineering?
I like mechanical engineering as it is related to cars, engines, robots and other cool stuff I liked when I was a child. I always wanted to learn how it works so I chose to study the mechanical discipline.
What kind of engineering skills would you like to develop in the near future?
I would like to gain more engineering skills in plant and transmission operations. My past was more about design, but to be able to gain more knowledge in operations will help me assist NYPA’s projects better.
What personal characteristics do you think are needed to become a successful engineer?
Be open minded, communicative and be willing to help others. Engineering is not a one-man show. It requires a collaborative mind and it is a teamwork process.
What types of challenges in engineering do you enjoy?
To proactively analyze and figure out an issue before it happens.
Why did you choose to become a Professional Engineer?
A PE’s requirement includes comprehensive understanding of various aspects of the engineering world. Also, most importantly, it makes sure that the engineer holds a high standard of engineering ethics, which should be very crucial in this field. A PE is also highly regarded as an individual, and driving for excellence is also a virtue that I hold myself up to.

Esme had asked Connor to meet her in her own changing room. The entire thing was a massive faux pas in terms of all normal human marriage traditions and even a few wolf ones. Cultures blended like that a lot of the time. Still, she had stressed that this was something that was between just them and he would hate not to honor that for her. Not when she was letting him do a painful binding she’d already expressed disgust in. All was fair in love and war.
With a little help from Chloe and Lilith, he was able to get everyone away long enough to sneak himself in there without too much suspicion. He was not sure what it would be like to watch Elias blow a gasket, but he was really not looking forward to seeing it.
He knocked twice, before opening the door himself, coming in to see her. She looks pretty like she always did. Someone had already started to do her hair but the dress was hanging on the wall hidden away behind a garment bag. That was probably for the best. There were some things he wanted to keep a surprise.
After everything that had happened to make this as weird as possible Connor was looking forward to the normalcy of having a breakdown seeing her walkdown the isle like every other man that had ever existed. It was his right, really. Still, seeing her had soothed him a bit. His parents didn’t know what they were talking about. And even if they did, what did it matter? He loved her with his entire heart, with every cell in his body, with every breath of air he took. Esme was his forever kind of person. His Diana. It wasn’t his fault that his parents never really used that word right.
And if they waited for him to fail and fall, they would be waiting a good long while.
“You look great, Ray,” Connor said softly, closing the door behind him. “Did we need anything for the fairy bindings or is it just me, myself, and you?”
Joking felt sort of stupid right now, but at least it was something to keep him from going insane. After the fae bindings, it couldn’t get much more real. Sure, the human marriage certificate was important, and the wolf vows mattered, but after these she couldn’t escape. She couldn’t run away into danger just to save him.
That, more than anything, would be a relief.

hate it when I get a fragment of a song stuck in my head and I can't remember anything but two lines of the chorus and the walkdown on the electric guitar into the next verse. Mutter it into Shazam, get nothing. Look up lyrics for various bands I think it miiiight be (Pearl Jam? Fuel? Filter? Smashing Pumpkins? Soundgarden?) and get nowhere.
By the same token it's perversely satisfying to open Spotify, type in Pearl Jam Radio, and click on random tracks until the right one starts playing. Feels like solving an escape room.
( It was Interstate Love Song, by Stone Temple Pilots, by the way.)
