Tracking Kou and Aoba's romantic progress in Cross Game: Volume 4
He's just another stupid pitcher......
Chapter 21
They've never had a direct relationship with each other before this point.
Chapter 22
This is the exact moment when Aoba begins to fall in love with Kou. He threw that fastball, straight into her heart.
Kou on the other hand, looks up to Aoba and is always trying to seek her approval.
Now that she finally got to see what he is capable of with her own eyes, she can't deny his talents anymore. Her perception of him had been cracking for a while now, and in just one moment he completely shattered it.
Chapter 24
Why has she doubted him all this time? It's after this home run that she starts watching him with fondness in her eyes.
Chapter 25
This is the start of Aoba watching Kou closely.
It's the first time she's ever smiled so warmly at him. This is a pitcher who excites her so much, that even his stupidity can charm her.
Chapter 27
(I had to check the raws to understand this... ^q^) She's impressed (that he hit it) (also at his stupidity).
Chapter 28
From what I can remember, Adachi's baseball MCs generally act very calm and collected during the games. This has been my perception of Kou as well, but I guess even he threw tantrums early on. (Touma on the other hand, is an ANGY boy, to contrast Sou's level-headedness. He mellows out over time though.)
Aoba knows Kou better than I do, though. He'd definitely say the same about her too.
Chapter 29
It's pretty funny how quickly she's changed her tune on him. She's having so much fun just watching him, she fell so quick and so hard.
Chapter 30
Stupid, stupid pitcher.
The smart thing to do (to win that napolitan) would be to walk Azuma, but this stupid pitcher can't forgive him for how he treated Aoba. He has to pitch them straight.
Indeed, she does want to trust in what Akaishi and Waka said. And she won't admit it, but she wants to trust in him herself.

Stealing this addition again
I have written so much about waka's feelings towards his disability. How it affected him as Masato and kept influencing how he interacted with people as Aoki. This is one of my favorite parts of his character but i didn't really make any post about it yet. Mainly because i'm afraid to say something dumb or wrong about physical disability and media representation of it, but I WILL talk about it in great le lenghts eventually. I have the beginning of an essay sitting in my drafts about that kind of stuff that I am also using to shit on Eiji from IW because I don't like the guy.
About most of the characters feeling like generic RPG characters in the main story plot :
!!! I've never thought about it! I think this is something fascinating you've just opened my eyes to. I would even say that specifically having Ichiban, Nanba and Aoki as the three "most human" characters would be so fitting!
(As I am exiting 8 hours of working on 3D art I have to notice that their three characters' color palette also form the RGB colors, which are the three colors used to make digital images, which is MOST CERTAINLY a coincidence, but I find it very funny that, in a game filled with video games' codes and tropes that is playing with the perceived "artificiality" of the media to deliver painfully REAL characters and situation WITH those same "artificial" codes and tropes, the three characters that would be perceived as being the "realest" out of all of them are actually visually tied to the very first thing that compose a so-called "artificial" video game : the three colors of the millions of pixels on the screen.)
Because Ichiban is the hero (morally good), Nanba is a traitor turned ally (morally grey) and Aoki is Aoki (morally the worst person on this earth) ; these are their archetypes but each one of them get nuanced throughout the game. Even Ichiban who suddenly enters a murderous mindset fueled by rage and grief at the start of Ch14 after the lockers lore dump, even if one chapter prior he was explicitly refusing to kill for revenge.
I think making all of those characters more nuanced in their morality serves the bigger theme of Light vs Shadow we talked about some time ago. Showing that even the most precious and kind soul on earth (Ichiban) has his dark sides, while the worst human being alive (Aoki is not happy to be playing this role. And even if Nanba tried very hard to first be "just a good guy" and then "just a bad guy", he cannot "just" be one because he's way more complex as a person than that. Because humans are complex.
Morally gray, the gray zones, breaking the binary of the systemical "us vs them" paradigm, all of that shit
Although I think I will have to disagree with the wording of "every other characters feel like generic rpg characters" : I agree with the fact that their MORALITY in the main story somewhat feels less complex than the other three, but they aren't really as flat as you say, I think. Maybe Adachi and Saeko, yes, but the very point of the Ijin Three, that Joongi and Zhao are a part of, is to justify a legally AND morally gray situation, LITERALLY killing/letting people die for the better good. And as far as the main plot is concerned, Joongi and Zhao both believes this system to be somewhat functionnal, but are willing to change their ways and push their system to evolve in order for a better one to be born, which would make them more complex than generic RPG characters (and I KNOW we're not talking about talking about the drink links, but i find it FASCINATING how Joongi and Zhao contrast each other with their respective involvement within the Ijin Three, one having got his entire life and identity erased, shaped, changed and defined by it, and the other not feeling any connection or loyalty or sense of duty linking him to it).
So I would just change the wording of "most characters in the main plot of the game feels like generic rpg characters" to "these three characters SPECIFICALLY get a special treatment in the main story that other characters don't have, making them more complex as a result". Otherwise yeah everything you said was oh so true.
*stares* I'm going to talk about him as if I knew him.
#istg if I end up kinning this dude I'm blaming it on you (/lh /j /pos)#< for the love of fuck please do not kin this man he is Evil and would probably eat babies because they do not contribute to society enough#/lh /j#the idea that my stupid rambling might be leading some people to appreciate aoki a little more is giving me life#i either feel stupid or crazy whenever i see how this character has like less than 10 fans /hyp#so even if i succeed to turn only One (1) person into a fan of this guy that will already expand the fanbase A LOT lmao#i really need a tag for those analysis/thoughts on Y7 stuff. i try not to write more than i draw but hehh time is finite

Do y'all think tsubaki-sensei considers mikomayu ~as canon~ as the other ships still? Idk what sort of editorial restrictions would be placed if she actively wants to make them one of the main pairings, but I feel like considering Seo's reaction to missing Waka was placed right next to Mikoto's reaction we miiiight be headed there?
i don’t think she’s as invested in developing it, but i could be wrong. there’s a lot of potential in the mayumayu x mamiko situation and if she ever decides on an identity reveal, i think it could go either way. also, a lot of the humor in mayumiko chapters comes from their weird personality quirks, not “haha gayyy” so that’s also a good sign? i’ve seen actual girls love manga (adachi to shimamura) on gangan online before so i imagine mayumiko would not be impossible from an editorial perspective.
however, she did also have that question on that 5th anniversary survey about whether mikorin should get a girl as a partner. the responses were, in order of most votes to least:
1. nah, he’s better off alone;2. he’s got mayu! (for merch);3. he’s pitiful so please give him someone;4. he’s got tanuki! (for merch)
so there’s potential, but i don’t really know what to expect from tsubaki-sensei.
#mod shotgun#shotgun answers#ask#Anonymous#mayumiko#also we are currently working on getting those 5th anniversary survey results ready#i think roseliascans has them in plain text#but we wanted to give you the full experience!!!#look out for it sometime in the future :)

Tracking Kou and Aoba's romantic progress in Cross Game: Volume 1
You having fun? Pitching like that. It's August, AKA Koushien month (it's almost over but I started reading earlier plz understand), and I've been in an Adachimood™, so I've been catching up to Mix by rereading it from the beginning. But! My mind keeps wandering in the direction of Cross Game. Now, I adore Mix. It's a perfectly entertaining slice of life baseball manga, and grandpa Adachi is still a master at his craft. It definitely succeeds more on the spokon aspect compared to his previous outings, but with the larger cast and its focus on legacy (aka HEYDOYOUREMEMBERTOUCH? + ~familia~), it's rather lacking in the romance department. I miss the romance of Kou and Aoba, I'm desperate as fuck for more content of them, so I...keep going back. I can't stop thinking about the gradual development of their relationship, how they fell for each other before they could even realize it, how they expressed their feelings at the end... So I am going to track their romantic development for my own sanity and to clear up some misconceptions I've been reading, because Adachi is a subtle little shit and some of us are too dumb for his storytelling, like myself back when Cross Game was serialized.
Chapter 1
Back when I read Cross Game in HS, I never actually parsed it as a romcom. I was simply sold by the first episode's ending and fell in love Adachi's storytelling. Aoba is, however, the first girl introduced. She is our heroine, despite the first volume informing us otherwise.
As much as Kou likes to object to Wakaba's PDA and bossing him around, she has him wrapped around her finger.
We start the first chapter, and the first volume, off with a full four leaf clover.
Chapter 2
Kou may deny it, but Wakaba makes it clear to the world that she is his girlfriend.
Chapter 3
The four Tsukishima sisters, each representing a leaf in the clover. Wakaba's is the left.
Likely when Akaishi started to give up on Wakaba. Kou always has and always will be the main character in her heart.
Impressive, Aoba.
Chapter 4
It's funny how only Aoba fails to see his good sides, arguably because she fails to see her own because she's so insecure. Her sisters are well aware of how thoughtful he actually is.
Chapter 5
At this point, Kou still couldn't care less about baseball. But Aoba looks pretty damn cool when she plays, does she not? On the other hand, their families believe Kou and Waka are fated to be with each other. After all, they were born on the same day, in the same hospital, and grew up down the street to each other.
Wakaba agrees. Aoba does not.
And unlike her sister, Aoba has high standards for her ideal man.
Chapter 6
Do you ever see a pitcher so cool, that she inspires you to reach her level? Initially just to compete with her, but later on to seek her approval.
Chapter 7
This is the image of Kou that Aoba will cement in her brain for the next four years: a lazy slob who has no respect for the sport she loves.
But he's already showing her signs of how capable he can become with some hard work.
Unlike her sister, Waka truly believes in Kou. She knows Kou is capable of throwing 160km/h; it's a goal she sets for Kou, to prove to Ao that he can, so she can finally eat her words and come to like (platonic) him. Aoba, on the other hand, loves her older sister so much that she would never steal her man, even if he does grow into her own ideal (as if she would ever entertain this idea in the first place).
Chapter 8
Kou may not admit it out loud, but he's smitten.
They are very well dating at this point, as young as they may be.
Chapter 9
And, she's gone.
Chapter 10
What can you do but honor your last memory of her?
And thus we continue our story with a single leaf faded. If you want to watch the first episode, which covers the first volume:
youtube
youtube
#kouao play-by-play#i am pretty sure i own the first volume somewhere because i thought of the first volume/episode as its own perfect self-contained story#now that i am older i care more about ship#i really want to get back to reading mix lmao
