Do you remember what the first Hindi song you listened to was? Do you still listen to it? Did it inspire you to study the language further, or did you ignore it at the time? Spill the musical beans.
Oh, this is an interesting one. The first Hindi film I watched purposefully - as in I made a conscious decision to watch an Indian film not necessarily thinking of its language (in the beginning I watched a mix of South Asian films - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu etc. not really understanding the difference until a bit later) was Daawat-e-Ishq (2014).
I was completely blown away by the aesthetics and whole concept of there being a film with songs in it without it being a musical in the Western sense (Moulin Rouge (2001) was the previous film that swept me away back in the day and that’s a whole another story).
Seeing the song Shayarana on the film had me baffled, how can there be so talented people that look so beautiful - to me it seemed that they can do it all, act, dance, and sing too.
That bubble was burst soon enough when I learned about playback singing but instead of taking anything away from my experience it increased my fascination when I started realising how big and complex productions South Asian films must be and how much talent is included especially when there are numerous song and dance numbers in a single film. I mean there are some Western actors and actresses I appreciate as talented in their craft but there are very few I can even imagine to do an Indian style dance number with a straight face let alone with anything close to the grace required in the more classical style numbers.
Anyway, the point is not to compare the art per se but to highlight my amazement of this whole new world of South Asian cinema I had had no idea existed (well I had seen Marigold (2007) ages ago but back then my reaction was more like ‘meh’ and to be honest it’s just not that good of a film so not the best introduction anyway).
My favourite song of Daawat-e-Ishq was and still is Mannat and I remember it being the first song I searched from YouTube as a lyrical video. To me the lines of the chorus:
मेरी मन्नत तू, तु को है तुझ से माँगा
मेरी मन्नत तू, तुझ को है मौला माना
Merī mannat tū, tujh ko hai tujh se māṅgā
Merī mannat tū, tujh ko hai maulā mānā
They sounded like an incomprehensible chant where I struggled to separate the words from one another. I listened to it on repeat until slowly I was able to untangle the sounds in a way that I could sing along - not understanding a single word - and it was such a brain rush.
I remember watching this film maybe three times quite soon right after I had seen it the first time and it’s soundtrack was the first I downloaded on my then iPod (may it rest in peace). I enjoyed it a lot and I was worried that the next Indian film I’d watch wouldn’t be as nice and it would sort of jinx it for me - I really really wanted there to be more similar films. I had little idea of the volume of Hindi cinema at that time. After I took the leap and watched Jab We Met (2007) next, there really was no going back for me.
My language studies started seriously only a couple of years later, but by that time I had gathered such a robust vocabulary of strands of hair blowing in the wind, rain, heart beats and infatuation from hundreds of film songs that I felt miles ahead of my course mates on the Hindi beginner’s course I attended.
Thanks for the ask, this really took me years back!

Salman Khan: Bollywood’s Hit-Machine
Bollywood and music have always gone hand in hand, and Salman Khan has been at the forefront of this dynamic relationship. With a career spanning over three decades, Salman Khan’s films have consistently delivered some of Bollywood’s most iconic and chart-topping songs. From soulful romantic melodies to high-energy dance numbers, his movies are synonymous with unforgettable music that resonates with audiences across generations. This article explores how Salman Khan’s cinematic journey has shaped Bollywood’s music industry, highlighting his collaborations, impact on trends, and memorable contributions.
The Early Days: Romantic Melodies
Salman Khan’s association with music started with his early films, where romantic melodies became a hallmark of his on-screen persona. His debut as a lead actor in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) not only established him as a star but also gave Bollywood some of its most memorable songs. Tracks like Dil Deewana and Kabootar Ja Ja Ja became instant classics, showcasing Salman’s ability to enhance a song’s appeal with his natural charm and emotive performances.
The success of Maine Pyar Kiya was followed by other musical hits in the 1990s, including Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998). These films featured iconic songs like Didi Tera Devar Deewana and O O Jaane Jaana, which remain fan favorites even today. Salman’s knack for connecting with audiences through music became one of his defining traits, setting the tone for the rest of his career.
The Role of Collaborations
One of the key factors behind Salman Khan’s success in Bollywood music is his collaborations with some of the industry’s finest talents. Music composers like Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam, and Sajid-Wajid have created numerous hits for his films, while playback singers like Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, and Arijit Singh have lent their voices to his characters.
In the early 2000s, Salman’s association with Himesh Reshammiya proved to be a game-changer. Albums like Tere Naam (2003) and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) became massive hits, with songs like Tere Naam Humne Kiya Hai and Jeene Ke Hain Chaar Din dominating charts. The melodious tunes and catchy beats not only contributed to the films’ success but also reinforced Salman’s status as a music trendsetter.
Dance Numbers: The Salman Khan Effect
Beyond romantic ballads, Salman Khan is known for his high-energy dance tracks that dominate parties and celebrations. Songs like Dhinka Chika (Ready), Jumme Ki Raat (Kick), and Swag Se Swagat (Tiger Zinda Hai) have become anthems for his fans. His larger-than-life persona, combined with his unique dance style, adds a distinct flavor to these numbers.
Salman’s ability to make even simple choreography look appealing is part of what makes his dance numbers iconic. For instance, his hook step in Dabangg’s Munni Badnaam Hui became a cultural phenomenon, with fans across the globe emulating his moves. These songs don’t just entertain—they create moments that define Bollywood’s pop culture.
The Singer in Salman Khan
In addition to acting and performing, Salman Khan has also dabbled in singing, showcasing another facet of his artistic talent. His debut as a playback singer in Hello Brother (1999) with the song Chandi Ki Daal Par Sone Ka Mor hinted at his musical potential. However, it was his rendition of Hangover (Kick, 2014) that truly captured the audience's attention. The romantic ballad, with its contemporary beats, became an instant hit and highlighted Salman’s versatility as an entertainer.
Songs like Main Hoon Hero Tera (Hero, 2015) and Jag Ghoomeya (Sultan, 2016) further solidified his reputation as a multifaceted artist. His ability to connect emotionally through his singing adds a personal touch to the music, making it more relatable for fans.
Shaping Bollywood’s Musical Trends
Salman Khan’s films have often set benchmarks for Bollywood music, influencing industry trends and audience preferences. His movies are known for their carefully curated soundtracks that cater to a wide range of emotions and situations. Whether it’s a soulful melody like Teri Meri (Bodyguard) or an adrenaline-pumping track like Do You Wanna Partner (Partner), Salman’s films consistently deliver diverse and memorable songs.
Moreover, his insistence on quality music has raised the bar for film soundtracks. By collaborating with top-tier composers and singers, Salman has ensured that his movies remain synonymous with great music, further elevating their appeal.
A Global Phenomenon
Salman Khan’s influence on Bollywood music extends beyond India, reaching international audiences who embrace his films and their soundtracks. Songs like Swag Se Swagat and Selfie Le Le Re (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) have been streamed millions of times on global platforms like Spotify and YouTube. His ability to create music that transcends cultural boundaries has made him a global ambassador for Bollywood.
In addition, Salman’s music often incorporates elements of fusion, blending traditional Indian sounds with contemporary global beats. This approach not only keeps his music relevant but also introduces Bollywood to new audiences worldwide.
Conclusion
Salman Khan impact on Bollywood music is undeniable. His films have delivered some of the most iconic and beloved songs in Indian cinema, spanning genres and generations. Whether it’s through romantic melodies, high-energy dance numbers, or his own singing ventures, Salman has left an indelible mark on the music industry. His ability to connect with audiences through music continues to be one of the pillars of his stardom.
As Salman Khan’s cinematic journey evolves, so does his contribution to Bollywood music. His upcoming projects are eagerly anticipated, not just for the stories they promise to tell but also for the music they will undoubtedly bring. ★ Salman Khan opens up about releasing Radhe on OTT, the pandemic and working with Prabhudheva!
-May 14, 2021
Fulfilling the commitment was the right thing to do in the lockdown as the fans can get entertained at a very meagre cost as compared to what it would have been if they saw the film in the theatres," the actor says
Superstar, philanthropist and charismatic actor, Salman Khan is a force to reckon with. Indeed, there has been no looking back for him after his film Maine Pyaar Kiya, released a few decades ago, turned out to be a stupendous hit at the box office.
We remember in one of our earlier interactions then, Salman spoke about the anxiety he experienced when Maine Pyaar Kiya was being released. That day he drove on his motorbike down to a theatre in town to watch the reactions of the audience. Little did he know that driving his motorcycle back home would almost be impossible. He averred then, “I remember when I came out of the theatre, I was immediately surrounded by fans. I was not prepared for this. But yes, it was humbling and a different, yet memorable, feeling. I was happy and surprised by the fans' lovable reactions, which was a first-time experience for.
That was then. Today, the superstar is all set to release Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai on an OTT platform on Eid… Was he facing the same anxiety he faced during his debut film? In view of the pandemic, Salman Khan spoke to us through Zoom about his film and more. Excerpts
As much as I am missing the big screen, Radhe is missing it too. This film is made for the big screen, and we had decided that we would be coming out this Eid. We were under lockdown so theatre owners were not in favour of the release and since we all were going through a miserable time, we thought it would be better to give the OTT a go. After things got a bit better, we again announced the theatrical release of the film, but then the lockdown was imposed again. We thought the lockdown won't last for too long, and theatres would be able to operate with 30-50% occupancy, but that did not happen. However, all this I feel happened for the good because what if, God forbid, even a single audience member would have been Covid positive, I would feel this has happened because of us. But, when things go back to normal, we will re-release the film in the theatres.
Could you elaborate on Radhe’s OTT release?
We have partnered with Zee because of which we will face losses along with them. But we decided to bring the film in such unprecedented times so that the audiences could entertain themselves. The film is getting a theatrical release overseas but in India, there are few theatres operating. And, wherever the film releases, we aren't going to get anything major out of it. On other days, we charge 350, 250, and 150 but this time, we aren't charging anything. So, fulfilling the commitment was the right thing to do in the lockdown as the fans can get entertained at a very meagre cost as compared to what it would have been if they saw the film in the theatres. It is good to watch the film in the safe environment of your house.
There are people who aren't adhering to Covid protocols. What message would you like to give them?
What should I tell them? It’s been a year-and-a-half and the second wave is far more dangerous than the first one... It has reached almost every household. I pray for everyone's safety, and urge people to get vaccinated. But, taking the vaccine doesn't give anyone a freehand, it doesn't mean you won't get Covid, hence following protocols is must. I have taken the first dose, and will take the second one in 10-15 days. The problem is our medical infrastructure is exhausted — not only ours but everywhere. There is no space in the hospitals. People are dying because they are not getting beds, and the government centres are full. We have seen a lot of people losing their loved ones or close ones going through 20 days of misery. Hence, we need to be careful of how we conduct ourselves.
The film industry has come forward to lend a helping hand to the people in need. And, it was reported whatever Radhe's earnings are, they will be donated to COVID relief...
We aren't going to earn anything, we are only going to lose. And, the loss will be from our end and Zee's. You all must be thinking that we have decided to release the film because we wanted to earn money. But, we are at loss as we aren't getting a theatrical release. Whatever amount we get from the theatrical release, we earn profits from that revenue. And whatever production costs we have invested in the film, we'll be investing that as well. Last time we donated money to people and the process has be restarted. This time, around 50,000 people from the industry will get an amount, which will help them tide through this difficult phase. We are also arranging some oxygen concentrators. We just hope that things go well for the film industry and the entire world, more so for the daily wage workers.
Your jodi with Prabhudheva is superhit. What brings you together on the same wavelength?
He is a talented actor, director and choreographer. He knows the pulse of the audience and the hero's too
The film also marks a long association between you and Sajid-Wajid. And, Sajid recently said you were the one who boosted his morale when he was completely demoralised...
He lost his brother... In fact his best friend, business partner — they used to work together, and were always together. There was immense love and respect between them. But then he lost him to Covid. It was a huge jolt for him, but he picked himself up and started working hard. And, the songs he made for Radhe were already with me, along with a few others created by Wajid, which comprise of tunes, lyrics, musical stanzas, etc. In fact, I have the content for almost 100 songs — he used to come and sing for me whenever we met, I have kept those songs aside. And in the future, whenever we make a film, and if we can fit the songs that we have, we will incorporate Wajid's work so that the coming generation can listen to his creations. I think he was one of the most talented people who never got his due.

Watch the classical song thumri of 2022 babul mora sung by pratibha singh baghel
Breathing new life into 19th century romantic Indian poems and melodies or classical song thumri, INHERITANCE is the new special project from Hindustani star vocalist Pratibha Singh Baghel, composer + violinist Deepak Pandit and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. Along with extensive accomplishments in Indian musical theater and Bollywood playback singing, Pratibha Singh Baghel excels in the art of classical Hindustani music with a forward-looking, internationally minded modern vein. Pratibha’s vocals glide, rise and land perfectly on INHERITANCE.
classical song thumri are a unique Indian genre of semi-classical music, that focuses on emotion, love and romance and are associated with dance, dramatic gestures and mild eroticism. ‘Thumri’ comes from the Hindi verb ‘thumakna’ which means to ‘walk with dancing steps so the ankle bells tinkle’. As new thumris classical song are passed from generation to generation, so INHERITANCE takes its name with four thumris composed within Indian classical Ragas.
Deepak Pandit was born into a Qawwali family, surrounded and inspired by devotional Sufi music for his formative years and is one of India’s leading violinists and composers. Deepak performed with and composed for the late ghazal vocal legend, Jagjit Singh for over twenty years. In considering which classical song thumri to select and arrange for INHERITANCE, Deepak chose ones that would best reflect Pratibha Singh Baghel’s musical vision and her soaring, exquisite singing voice. They have collaborated on musical projects together for over five years as Deepak Pandit says,
“Before we started working on INHERITANCE, we sat down and studied all the Thumris, how they have been sung by the original singers, how they have emphasized on the words and phrasing… Pratibha’s versatility in both Indian and western classical music and enables makes the leads and improvisations work together naturally and easily. I can Taking Thumris to new heights and compose with a free hand knowing that Pratibha will deliver. Everything is possible because of her versatility as a singer.”
youtube
Indian thumri based babul mora  is a much-loved Indian classical song thumri based on the morning Raga, Bhairavi that has been passed down from the 19th century thumri written by the last King of Awadh (latter day Uttar Pradesh), Wajid Ali Shah. Wajid Ali Shah was revered as a ruler, poet and patron of Indian dance.  Originally Thumris new classical song babul mora  was named ‘Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye” – “Oh father mine, my home grows further away from me”, as a lament for Wajid’s homeland after he was exiled by the British Raj to Kolkata around the time of the 1857-58 rebellion.  Wajid Ali Shah’s poems have set the standards for classical song thumri for generations.
Deepak Pandit carefully adapted, arranged Hamari Atariya (My Balcony) to reflect Pratibha Singh Baghel’s musical vision and her soaring, exquisite singing voice. Along with her extensive accomplishments in Indian musical theater and Bollywood playback singing, Pratibha Singh Baghel has devoted herself to the art of classical Hindustani music in a forward-looking, internationally minded modern vein. The imagery in Hamari Atariya’s couplets is given new life by Pratibha’s interpretation.
The music for INHERITANCE was composed and produced by Deepak Pandit, co-produced by Gaurav Vaswani and features Prashant Sonagra on tabla, the string tapestries of Tapas Roy as well as Deepak Pandit on violin, the instrument for which he is renowned. Deepak crafted large-scale orchestrations and sent them to the master musicians of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra taking the music of INHERITANCE into a much bigger sonic space.
Established in 1945 by the Hungarian State Railways, the renowned Budapest Symphony Orchestra has developed an international reputation with performances at prestigious venues such as the Große Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, the Philharmonie Berlin, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre. It is led by Daniel Boico and is Hungary’s leading orchestra.
Tumblr media
Pratibha Singh Baghel’s previous 6-track release, Bole Naina – also composed by Deepak Pandit – is a collection of Pandit’s original compositions, brought to life by Baghel’s winning voice and featuring the legends Zakir Hussain, Gulzar Sahab and more. A native of Madhya Pradesh state, Pratibha Singh Baghel’s creative versatility has earned her far-reaching Bollywood credits as well as lead roles in the groundbreaking theatrical stage productions Mughul-E-Azam and Umrao Jaan Ada. Pratibha has performed in over 30 countries, gaining a worldly view as she says,
“I never want to limit my music to Bollywood and to India. I would like the whole world to listen to my music.”
Pratibha Singh Baghel is comfortably conquering social media with and delighting blossoming audiences on YouTube and Instagram channels. INHERITANCE was recorded and mixed at Seven Heaven Studios in Mumbai and mastered at London’s Abbey Road and features four classical song thumri and radio edits for all the songs.  INHERITANCE releases through the South Asian-focused music media platform and record label, Sufiscore on 14 February, 2022.
