Since awakening, Stelle has always had this inkling that there was something different about her that set her apart from other humans. In fact, if she really thought about it, Stelle is almost certain she is not entirely human at all.
The fact she has no memories prior to Kafka awakening her on the Herta Space Station often leads Stelle to wonder just who exactly she is as a person, and what exactly she is. At best, her lack of memories could be attributed to amnesia and at worst, Stelle fears that her lack of memories means something else entirely — something that labels her less than human. Her worst fear, perhaps, is that prior to Kafka, she was no one; an empty husk waiting to be "activated".
Kafka's instructions that she would go on a journey of self discovery, and forge her own path by creating bonds with those around her only perpetuates these fears. This is why Stelle is often on the quieter, restrained side with her companions. She has no lack of affection for them, but her fear and worry that all of this was designed by Elio — that she is merely a pawn in a bigger chess game — often keeps her from seeking out deeper attachments. This isn't to say that she can't or won't make them. Attachment is inevitable, especially when she spends so much time around the Astral Express crew, and those she meets on their travels; but the notion that not only may she not be entirely human, but a player in a production out of her control can lead her to pull away at times and get stuck in her own head.
Her body does function like a normal human on the surface. She breathes, she bleeds, she hurts, she cries. Her heart beats. But that is where her human qualities seem to end. The most obvious evidence Stelle has surrounding her true origins is the Stellaron hosted inside her body. She knows enough about the Stellaron and its immense power to realise that a normal human would not be able to survive trying to absorb its power, much less host it in their body. Her confrontation with Cocolia Rand taught her that. This has ultimately led Stelle to believe that, whatever she is, she is not entirely human; but whether she is merely an artificial human ( something like human, but only just ) or a different species entirely is still a mystery yet to be solved.
