Ever do shit that makes you go “damn that’s a shitty ally move” and then remember “wait, I’m not an ally, I’m literally The Thing(tm)”
And then you go “THAT MAKES IT WORSE!!!”

This is the story of how i (didn’t) die.
CW - Car crash
Details and pics under the jump. I just don’t want people to suddenly see pics and have their days ruined. View at your own discretion.
Ten Years Ago to the Day, I was heading off to work. Pretty normal day, nothing out of the ordinary. But yeah, stuff happened.
I was barely a few minutes out of home when stuff started to go wrong. We lived in Stirling in the Adelaide hills at the time, and the on-ramp onto the freeway to head into town isn’t the safest. For starters it is really short. Like... REALLY short. And second, you’re coming up from below the level of the freeway, so you can’t see the oncoming traffic very well.
Now add some rainy weather and you have a disaster waiting to happen. And it happens a fair amount.
In my case, this almost didn’t happen at all. Could have been just a near miss if I was the one in control of things. But I can’t control other drivers.
I was accelerating up the on-ramp to get to the (then 100km/h) safe entry speed and I was checking over my shoulder for traffic. Yeah it was pretty busy. Darn. So i look back infront of me and there is a car STOPPED at the end of the on-ramp, trapped by the oncoming traffic and not having enough sense to go into the emergency lane. HOLY FUCKING SHIT! I Slam on my breaks and come to a screeching halt behind this car. Phew, I didn’t hit it! Crisis averted! I check in my rear-view mirror....
...Fuck...
A Ute, doing the same thing as me, accelerating and then having to slam on their breaks doesn’t have enough time to stop. They hit me square in the rear...
...
and punts me into the path of a Semi-Trailer going 110km/h.
Honestly. That feeling when you know you’re going to die is indescribable. All I could do is scream, cover my head and fling myself backwards.
The Truck hit my driver’s side door and then there was movement and then the movement stopped. I opened my eyes.
According to witnesses, my car got Airborne and ended halfway up a hill against a tree.
I was in shock but I knew I had to take stock of myself.
Was I in pain? No Could I move my legs? -wiggle feet- Yes. Can I get out? -Feet are trapped - Door has been caved in - Boots are too big - Take off boots? Fuck yeah I can do that. Oh, Hey buddy trying to pull open my door. I don’t think that will work. Give me a moment to undo my steelcap boots so I can try another door, k?
I get my boots undone and I find that my seat is leaning pretty far back. Huh... All good I can go out the passenger door behind me! Oh, people are helping me out the rear passenger window. Okay!
That is when I took the photo up there. Someone said, “Hey you should take a photo of that!” So I was like, Fantastic idea! I pull out my phone and take a quick snap and then figure it was a good idea to call the girlfriend (now my fiance). I started the call but everything was feeling kinda muted and fuzzy, so I just handed the phone to some passer-by and she got the joy of telling my girlfriend that I was in a car-crash! Woo!
Anyway, short ambulance trip to the hospital later, I discovered I had a few chunks of glass in the back of my head (which were removed and the cut on my head stapled shut)... and that was about it. I later found out that the flesh on the inside of my right knee was numb due to impacting with my left knee (nerve damage which took ages to get back to normal). I Also had bruising on my right thigh, and my phone, which was in my right front pocket at the time, was actually bent. (Also a few months later I started to suspect I’d chipped the bone on my elbow, but whatever.)
Anyway, the day after the hospital, we went to the scrap yard to salvage what we could from my car, and also to take a few photos:
I had brand new tyres on that car... and a whole tank of petrol! So you can see the headrest of the driver’s seat in the window behind. I actually broke the seat flinging myself back. You can also see where the truck’s bullbar hit me, square on the front wheel and door. The round scratch on the passenger door was from the wheel-nuts on the truck wheel when I was spun around.
That... was where I was sitting. On half a seat. You can’t see it here, but the steering wheel is also caved in. If I had had my hands on the wheel... I would be missing a hand.
Another shot of how far in the door was caved. Honestly... I should be dead from this... but I wasn’t even seriously injured. And now... 10 years later... I can look back on this and... still not take that on-ramp onto the freeway ever again.
Stay safe on the roads, friends. Love you all.
Note - That was a 1992 Ford Laser
