Jessie Bouchelle, 87

Mrs. Jessie Lee Wingler Bouchelle, age 87 of Elkin passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Chatham Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Bill Johnson officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mrs. Bouchelle was born April 27, 1930 in Wilkes County to Eugene and Ila Brown Wingler. She was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Rolin Lee Bouchelle, Jr., three sisters; Juanita Billings, Ruth Wingler, Carol Alexander and one brother; Hurdle Wingler.

She is survived by one daughter; Gail Gambill and husband Danny Keith of Elkin, two sons; Bobby Bouchelle and wife Joan of Hays, Jeffrey Bouchelle and wife Kathy of Knightdale, NC, four grandchildren; Tammy Bouchelle, Julie Roberson, Holly Williams, Brooke Bouchelle and Forrest Bouchelle and one great granddaughter; Hadley Williams.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621.

Sharon Lowe, 58

Sharon Kay Lowe, age 58, of Moravian Falls, died Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 18, 1959 in McDowell, Kentucky to Hatler and Phinetta Jones Evans. Mrs. Lowe was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her husband, Keith Lowe of Moravian Falls; brothers, Byron Evans, Tim Evans and wife Kim, Keith Evans and wife Debbie all of Grethel, Kentucky; sisters, Karen Short, Tammy Howell and husband Michael all of Grethel, Kentucky; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lyn Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted.

Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Rhoades, 67

Margaret Beaver Rhoades, age 67, of North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Wilkes Senior Village. She was born June 19, 1950 in Rowan County to Elmer (Ray) and Ruth Irene Hopkins Beaver. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carroll Dean Rhoades; brother, Ronald Beaver, Sr.; and sisters, Jackie Wilhelm and Loretta Whitley.

Surviving are her sons, Kevin Dean Rhoades of the home, Gary Russell Rhoades and wife Sarah of North Wilkesboro; brother, Ray Carson Beaver and wife Mary of Rockwell; sisters, Vickie Wilson and life partner Dan Cagle of Sherrills Ford, Phyllis Davis and husband Lonnie of Morehead City; grandchildren, Corry Russell Rhoades, Melanie Nichole Rhoades and Andrew Chase Rhoades.

Funeral service was October 17, at Bethel Baptist Church, 3656 Mtn. View Road, North Wilkesboro with Pastor Donnie Shumate officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Warren Horton, Jr., 74

Mr. Warren James Horton, Jr., age 74, of Wilkesboro passed away Friday, October 13, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen Roberts officiating. The Family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 prior to the service in the Heritage Room.

Mr. Horton was born October 25, 1942 to Warren James and Myrtle German Horton. He was a graduate of Wilkes Central High School and went on to earn a degree in Industrial Arts from Appalachian State University. The majority of his career was spent teaching math and drafting at East Wilkes High School.

Mr. Horton helped establish the Goshen Volunteer Fire Department and served as its chief for many years. He also held multiple leadership roles in the Wilkes County Fire Association and the Northwest Fire and Rescue College. He received certification from the North Carolina State Fire and Rescue Commission as a Fire Service Instructor and was instrumental in training countless firemen. In later life, he became an active member of the Ferguson Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Horton was a devoted first responder and fireman, serving his community tirelessly for over 40 years.

He is survived by his family, Linda Horton and their children; Warren James "Jim" Horton III, Christopher George Horton, Melinda Horton Shepherd, her husband James "Jim" Ray Shepherd, their two children; Emily Katherine Shepherd and James Ray Shepherd, Jr. and Mr. Horton's brother; Bryon Wayne Horton and his wife; Sherry Biddix Horton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goshen Volunteer Fire Department, 5400 NC 268, Wilkesboro, NC 28697 or Ferguson Volunteer Fire Department 12660 West NC Hwy 268, Ferguson, NC 28624.

Randly Moore, 83

Randly "Box" William Moore, age 83, of North Wilkesboro, died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born May 21, 1934 in Wilkes County to Gentry Tanner and Ruey Brooks Moore. Mr. Moore was a US Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lonnie Lee "Bud" Moore, Jack Tanner Moore, Billy Amos Moore; infant sister, who died at birth; and son-in-law, Walter Shephard.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Geraldine Moore; his children, Bebbie Barr and husband Jack, Libbie McNeil and husband Charlie, Tabbie Curry, Debbie Shephard; sister, Betty Prevette; grandchildren, Jennifer Barr, Amy McNeil Church, Chrissy McNeil Johnson, Brad Curry, Matt Curry, and great grandchildren, Charlie Johnson, Trenton Church, Courtney Church, Lanie Curry, Lakyn Curry.

Funeral service was held October 17, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Preacher Earl Rakes and Rev. David Wellborn officiating. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard Post 1142 followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mtn. Valley Hospice, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621.

Eric Duncan, Sr. 81

Mr. Eric Gerald Duncan, Sr. age 81 of Wilkesboro, husband of Betty Staley Duncan, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Mr. Edwin Taylor and Rev. Alvin Johnson officiating. Entombment will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service at Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Mr. Duncan was born January 16, 1936 in Bolder CO to Hannibal Gerald and Winnie Davis Leach Duncan. He was retired from Tyson Foods where he drove a truck for 38 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Duncan is survived by his wife; Betty Duncan, of the home, a daughter; Cathy Lynn Duncan and wife, Allison of Kernersville, two sons; Eric Gerald Duncan, Jr and wife, Elaine of Wilkesboro and Richard Gerald Duncan and wife, Wanna of Wilkesboro, four grandchildren; Daniel Gerald Duncan and wife Ashley J. Duncan of Wilkesboro, Bradley Ross Duncan of Washington, DC, Cara Leigh Duncan of Kernersville and Corbin Logan Duncan of Kernersville and three great grandchildren; Nori Elizabeth Duncan, Abbie Breanna Duncan and Alicia Braelynn Duncan.

The family request that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 419 S Hawthorne Road, Winston Salem, NC 27103 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, c/o Window World Cares 118 Shaver Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Daniel Hudson, Jr., 88

Mr. Daniel Holt Hudson, Jr., age 88 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at his home surrounded by the loving comfort of his family.

Funeral services wereOctober 16th, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. David Wellborn and Rev. Jeff Collins officiating. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard, will be held at Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Dan also known as Sonny, by many family and friends, was born in North Wilkesboro, N.C. on October 18, 1928 to Annie Bess Palmer Hudson and Daniel Holt Hudson, Sr. He graduated from North Wilkesboro High School in 1949 and went on to serve in the United States Navy from July 1949 until April 1953. He worked for the USDA for 27 years. His greatest achievement was that of a loving, kind father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

Dan was predeceased by his parents: sisters: Louise Vickery, Holt Ferguson, Betty Hudson and Janie Bumgarner Wardell and brothers W.J. Hudson and Smith Hudson as well as his granddaughter, Adriana Hudson.

Dan was a talented athlete during his youth, lettering in baseball, basketball and football and over the years rarely passed up the chance to watch a good ballgame on television. In his latter years, he was an avid movie watcher, especially enjoying old westerns. Dan was also an engaging story teller and not only loved to hear a good joke, but telling them as well, always keeping his loved ones laughing and always carried his great sense of humor with him wherever he would go.

Dan is lovingly remembered by his children and their spouses: Lora Hudson Towe of Asheville, NC, Myra Hudson Key and James "Jamie" Alan Key of Cleveland, T.N. and Daniel Holt Hudson III and Melissa Hudson of Wilkesboro, N.C. and their mother Mary Ann Watson, as well as his grandchildren: Danielle and Jacob Towe and Devin and Addysen Hudson and surviving sister, Robin McGlamery.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Pruitt Hospice of Wilkes, 902 West D Street Suite B, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Otis Campbell, 80

Otis James Campbell, age 80, of Wilkesboro, died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born December 14, 1936 in Sevierville, Tennessee to Walter S. and Cinnie Sutton Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was retired from the NC DOT as Highway Maintenance Supervisor in Ashe County. He was a bluegrass musician playing the guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Otis was the guitarist at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a former deacon and guitarist at Fletcher Memorial Baptist and Mount Jefferson Baptist, both in Jefferson. Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy and Wilbur Campbell; and sister, Pauline McCarter.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Johnson Campbell; daughters, Cynthia Campbell and husband Gary Zuckerman, Mary Ann Campbell all of Raleigh; grandchildren, Caroline Zuckerman of Arlington, Virginia, Alexandra Zuckerman of Carrboro, Drew Hickland, Justin Hickland both of Raleigh; brother, Otha H. Campbell of Lenoir, and sister, Clara C. Triplett of Lenoir.

Funeral service were held October 15, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Brady Hayworth and Rev. Phil Chapman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Janet Mathis, 79

Mrs. Janet Byrd Mathis, age 79 of North Wilkesboro, widow of George Mathis, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at her home.

Funeral services were October 13th, 2017 at Dehart Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Hall, Pastor Kent Wood and Rev. Steven Shumate officiating. Burial was in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery on Bethany Ford Road.

Mrs. Mathis was born September 20, 1939 in Wilkes County to Rev. Albert Byrd and wife Pearl Grimes Byrd. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; George Walter Mathis, a sister; Sue Byrd Brown and two brothers; Junior Byrd and Jerry Byrd.

Mrs. Mathis is survived by three sons; Randy Mathis and wife, Robin of Hays, Joey Mathis and wife, Martha of North Wilkesboro and Darren Mathis and wife, Kim of Hays, seven grandchildren; Brad Mathis, Brian Mathis, Eric Mathis, Danielle Mathis Griffith, Brent Mathis, Heath Mathis and Joel Mathis, seven great grandchildren; Natalie Mathis, Macy Mathis, Noah Mathis, Braden Mathis, Sadie Griffith, Peyton Mathis and Parker Mathis, three sisters; Judy Shepherd and husband, John of Purlear, Carol Byrd and husband, Dwight of North Wilkesboro and Diane Wood of Traphill, three brothers; Joe Byrd and wife, Paula of North Wilkesboro, Dean Byrd and wife, Clara of North Wilkesboro and Johnny Byrd and wife Janice of Hays.

Flowers will be accepted.

Ellen Dewitte Berrong, age 91, of North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at her home. She was born July 16, 1926 in Wilkes County to John Andrew and Mamie Victoria Blackburn Lovette. She was a Division Manager with Rose's Department Store for 37 years. Mrs. Berrong was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and six sisters.

Survived by her children, Joe Donald Berrong, wife Debra Sturgill of North Wilkesboro, John Ronald Berrong, wife Paula Tabor of Merrells Inlet, South Carolina, Sue Ann Berrong, Mike Berrong, wife Jo, Jeff Berrong, wife Beth all of North Wilkesboro, and Rebecca Jane Hersey of Wingate, NC; ten grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren.

Tonya Jones, 36

Ms. Tonya Renee Jones, age 36 of Hays, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at her home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 18th, 2017 at Bethel Baptist Church with Bro. Donnie Shumate officiating. The Family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 prior to the service at the church. A private family graveside service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at a later date.

Ms. Jones was born January 27, 1981 in Wilkes County to Mickey Eugene Parker and Denise Robin Jones. She was employed by Goody's, attended Bethel Baptist Church and volunteered at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her Father, a son; Khaseton I. Little and her grandfather; J.D. Jones.

Ms. Jones is survived by her mother; Denise Robin Jones and her husband, Tony of North Wilkesboro, a daughter; Malashea K.I. Dock of the home, a son; Jazaiah K. Dock of the home, two sisters; Kristy Jones and husband, Brad of Hays, Stephanie Perkins and husband, Reggie of Wilkesboro and Grandmother; Mildred Jones of North Wilkesboro.

Jason Mahaffey, 38

Jason Lee Mahaffey, age 38, of North Wilkesboro, died Tuesday, October 10, 2017. He was born April 11, 1979 in Wilkes County to Jerry W. and Shirley Harless Mahaffey.

Surviving are his wife, Crystal Mahaffey; son, Caleb Lee Mahaffey of the home; daughter, Hannah Brooke Mahaffey of the home; his mother, Shirley Supulski and husband Warren of Wilkesboro; his father, Jerry Mahaffey of Hays; sister, Cassie Hendren and husband Jonathan of Millers Creek; step sister, Tara Knupp of Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania; paternal grandmother, Mary Belle Mahaffey of Lansing; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Dehart Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Hall, Rev. Chris Lakey and Rev. Warren Supulski officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Dehart Baptist Church from 2:00 until 3:00 on Sunday, prior to the service. Ricky Shepherd, 65

Mr. Ricky Lynn Shepherd, age 65 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, October 10th, 2017 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 14th, 2017 at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. David Dyer officiating. Entombment will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 prior to the service at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Shepherd was born August 6th, 1952 in Iredell County to William Thomas and Helen Irene Woodie Shepherd. He was a Medical Technician and a member of Fairplains Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; Tommy Shepherd.

Mr. Shepherd is survived by two sisters; Gina Roten and husband, Steve of North Wilkesboro and Shari Smith and husband, Patrick of North Wilkesboro, one brother; Tim Shepherd of Winston Salem, special nieces; Miranda Roten and Emery Reece and special nephews; Ryan Smith and Dylan Smith.

Belinda Pierce, 60

Mrs. Belinda Harlan Pierce, age 60 of Purlear, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Hickory Falls Health and Rehab in Granite Falls.

Mrs. Pierce was born April 19th, 1957 in Wichita, KS to Marvin and Rosie Kay Riddles Harlan. She was a homemaker and the former owner of Learn & Grow Day school.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dennis Wilson Woods, age 69, of North Wilkesboro, died Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born September 9, 1948 in Wilkes County to Curtis Lee and Mary Edith Byrd Woods. Mr. Woods was a proud US Army Veteran. He loved family, hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, April Pruitt; and a granddaughter, Kylea Williams.

Surviving are his wife, Becky Woods; daughters, Dana Wingler and husband Nathaniel, Laura Shepherd and husband Shane, Tara Williams and husband Steve all of North Wilkesboro; brother, Dalton Woods of Boomer; sister, Libby Holbrook and husband Ben of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Haylea Wingler, Ashlea Wingler, Tyler Hawkins, Ethan Shepherd, Kirsten Shepherd, Jared Shepherd, Jacob Williams, Hagan Shumate, Caleb Williams, Mya Williams and Mason Williams all of North Wilkesboro; and great grandchild, Lydia Shumate of North Wilkesboro.

Gary Brown, 67

Mr. Gary Paul Brown, age 67 of Hays passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at his home.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 20, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro with Dr. Terry L. Matthews officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard will follow at the Church Columbarium. Mr. Brown was born March 6, 1950 in Mecklenburg County to Paul Wilbur and Irene Sweitzer Brown. He graduated from South Mecklenburg High School and attended Central Piedmont Community College, and served a total of 27 years in the United States Army. He attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia and received numerous awards and decorations in the military and worked 10 years in Joint Communications Management Office, retiring as the JCMO Program Manager.

He was preceded in death by parents.

He is survived by his wife; Pauline May Hopkins Brown of the home, daughter; Christine Brown and son; Stephen P. Brown both of Hays, four grandchildren; Troy Gibson of Hays, Ciera Rosenbery, Jodilyn Brown and Alexandria Brown all of Ruskin, FL., one sister; Karen Greer and husband Michael of Mt. Holly.

Billy Kenno Call, age 79, of North Wilkesboro, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at his home. He was born March 19, 1938 in Wilkes County to Raymond Hayes Call, Sr. and Reba Mae Brooks Call. Mr. Call retired from LP. He was also known as the "Candy Man". Mr. Call enjoyed family and friends; working at the North Wilkesboro Speedway; and going to the Cattle Sale on Monday's. Mr. Call was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan Jeanette Call Stanley; brothers, June Call, Leon Call; and sister, Barbara McCloud.

Mrs. Maude Ann Lawrence Poteat, age 97 of North Wilkesboro passed away Monday, October 9, 2017 at Wilkes Senior Village.

Mrs. Poteat was born August 12, 1920 in Wilkes County to William Philmore and Lilly Gregory Lawrence. She was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church, loved by her community, friends and family and was a faithful wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Coy Reason Poteat.

Mrs. Ruth Virginia Steelman Bryan, also known as "Nana", age 88 of North Wilkesboro, widow of Dr. T. R. Bryan, Jr., passed away Sunday, October 8th, 2017 at her home.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 14th, 2017 at the Wilkesboro Church of Christ with Ministers Lowell White and Randy Covalt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Ms. Bryan was born December 6, 1928 in Wilkes County to Charlie and Mary Laws Steelman. She was a Mother/Baby Healthcare Educator with her husband, Dr. Bryan. Mrs. Bryan graduated Kings Business College and was a member of the Wilkesboro Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Dr. T. R. Bryan, Jr., two sisters; Sarah Laws Lowe and Pat Laws Simpson and one brother; Gene Laws.

She is survived by two daughters; Pamela Bryan Terrell of Boone and Denise Bryan Smith of Cary, six grandchildren; Stephen Adam Terrell and wife Ivy, Leanna Virginia Proffitt and husband William, Kenneth Bryan Smith, Robert Scott Smith, Brad Thomas Smith and wife Steph and Joel Harrison Smith, one great granddaughter; Virginia Lee Proffitt "Ginger", two sisters; Mary Laws Triplett of North Wilkesboro and Martha Laws England, of Huntsville.
