Crap. I wanted to entirely pass on the new Iron Maiden album but I can’t & I’m disappointed in myself.

Rant below the cut.

Iron Maiden & Bruce Dickinson’s solo albums were the first proper metal I listened to back when I was in HS & obsessed with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, & KMFDM.

& they’re consistent. As in most of the Dickinson albums sound similar, especially those after the Blaze Bayley years. Steve Harris’ bass playing is iconic (& tbh the #1 reason why I initially picked up a bass) but it’s so heavily stylized you can pick it out almost immediately & I get it -- if it’s not broken, & in fact working brilliantly, no need to fix.

Between Steve & the very locked-in guitar tone every song has a very signature sound. & yeah it’s unmistakably Maiden but a lot of bands have ripped it over the years (not anyone’s fault, experimenting with the sounds of your various heroes is the key to finding your own sound & oc it’s not Maiden’s fault). Anyway, it comes off more as a stock, highly concentrated NWOBHM sound.

& then there’s Bruce who is not everyone’s cup of tea -- his style is definitely yelling on key with a fuckload of vibrato & call it singing. But it’s so good to my ear & I have always really loved it.

He typically writes about a lot of interesting shit, but from a completely yikes perspective. It’s as if he borrowed Crowley’s weird rich Englishman gaze to look at a wide world & boil it down into a bunch of fixations & stereotypes. & I know this is problematic but dude wrote an entire album based on Blake’s works & philosophies peppered with tarot & Rosicrucian imagery & I just can’t resist -- I know it’s a bad look but it’s candy. So, I just listen & enjoy with a certain vigilance.

& so when I saw the new album title I noped out. But I came back to it because I was making a list of the albums of 2021 & decided I had to give it a single listen just to rank it & fuuuuuuuuuck...

It’s not foundational or anything but it is admittedly good (especially for my purposes of background music to writing sci-fi/dark fantasy, which is what I’m supposed to be doing now but I felt a rant building & had to get it out) & I’m going to listen to it more & probably order a vinyl or something if it’s available.

I’ve had a lot of these returns to old faves recently (fuckin’ Avantasia’s last few releases were SO GOOD & Geoff Tate singing w Tobias Sammet? Sign me up every time) & am going to have to go back & listen to shit that was released in the years I was a straight up emo kid.

IRON MAIDEN are in talks to perform in Israel next year. The band is said to be planning a concert at Tel Aviv’s Bloomfield Stadium in late May, Israel Hayom reports.
