Mary-Kate Olsen Is Ready for a Fresh Start, After a Very Public Breakup and Dropping Out of College by Marshall Heyman (December 31, 2005) 📸 Ph: David Sims
...the move back to Los Angeles has improved both her health and her self-esteem. “Now I can walk outside in the morning and have a cup of coffee and actually breathe, and, you know, every once in a while I just need to take a break, you know?” Olsen says. Her conversation, like that of so many other girls her age, is peppered with “like,” “kind of” and “you know,” and her declarative sentences are often phrased as questions. (“I don’t actually look at a lot of fashion magazines?” she says at one point, when asked what inspires her style.) “You know, [college] is easier for my sister and that’s great, you know? I’m happy that I kind of realized that, okay, I just need to take care of myself right now,” she says. “I need to be able to go to yoga and work out and just read scripts and go on auditions, because that’s what makes me happy. You know? Like, papers don’t really make me happy.”

Okay, excellent addition! And yeah, there's the Idris Elba portrait I was referring to. I do actually quite like the guy's other works!
And, I don't think you're *wrong* that the "raw meat" treatment may have been a personal comment on Yeo's part.
But I wanted to kind of point out: I'm not sure that "warmonger" really goes with "Sgt. George Pattinson"? Pattinson was a survivor of D-Day. He was an enlisted man, not an officer calling the shots. And I don't think we generally regard the men who invaded Normandy to fight the Nazis as warmongers -- although "blood-stained", absolutely.
Mr Pattinson, Sergeant with 9th Battalion The Parachute Regiment, was to land within the perimeter of the Merville Battery, but, due to a faulty glider, he landed in Hampshire. By the evening of D-Day his platoon had managed to land in Normandy and he re-joined his unit. (source)
Now, what's a little bit interesting is that Yeo painted Pattinson's portrait at the commission of Prince Charles.
Portraits of three Taxi Charity veterans are on display at The Queen's Gallery as part of an exhibition entitled The Last Of The Tide. This exhibition showcases 12 portraits of veterans of D-Day, inspired and commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales following his attendance at the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy last year. The portraits pay tribute to some of the extraordinary men that played a role in the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944. The 12 veterans are shown wearing their medals and in some instances their regimental berets. All of them served in regiments with which The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall have a formal affiliation. The portraits have been created by twelve different artists. (From June, 2015. Source.)
But, you're right that Yeo has made some *extremely pointed* political statements with his art in the past.
In 2007, his unauthorised portrait of American President George W. Bush, created from cuttings of pornographic magazines and was shown in London, New York and Los Angeles brought him worldwide notoriety.
This is a quote from Yeo's Wikipedia page, which I recommend reading, because it's fascinating.
Both before and after doing the Bush portrait, Yeo received a lot of commissions to do political figures. Queen Elizabeth commissioned him to do a sketch portrait of David Attenborough (it's a very straightforward, light pencil portrait), and Yeo was also commissioned to do a portrait of Prince Philip in 2006 -- so the royals commissioning him goes back a long way. He also did a portrait of Camilla in 2014. Both the Philip and Camilla portraits are straightforward, and even subdued, rather than dramatic.
Here's an article from January 2024 about him as a portrait artist in demand in the UK. It has examples of several portraits discussed here, including the Camilla portrait.
I'm not reporting any of this to refute the idea that his choices with the color and texture of Charles's portrait might be pointedly critical! He's clearly very capable of producing work like that. (And I still can't get over the way that portrait hits me, and clearly has hit a LOT of people.)
I just started on this reply to push back a little on the idea that his feelings regarding Charles as king would be necessarily the same as his feelings towards a veteran of D-Day. But who knows! Maybe he would make no distinction between "figurehead of a blood-soaked empire" and "ordinary man who fought the Nazis".
Without more commentary from the artist, it's difficult to read the tea leaves on his true thoughts. There's a quote from him in the article linked above, talking about how sitting for a portrait can sometimes lead to people opening up to him, and he says: "“I’ve never done a book telling everyone’s secrets — which has been suggested a few times. I think if I did that, if I started telling people what everyone said, then people would stop coming.”
So this is a man who is being paid really substantial piles of money to paint the portraits of a lot of very famous and very rich people, and he's been doing that for around two decades. He's clearly aware that he has to act, and talk, in certain ways in order to protect his own career.
This just makes the whole thing even more fascinating to me. The observations of the possible symbolic meanings behind the... arresting visuals of his Charles portrait are out there now. It feels almost impossible to view this thing and not have a reaction to it, and I'm very sure that we on Tumblr are far from the only people suggesting a critique underlying the choices in it.
But it's become clear that this is far from a case of Charles hiring "some guy" and not really knowing what he'd get. Instead, he hired a guy with a two-decade track record of painting public figures (sometimes in controversial ways), a guy who Charles and his family have hired before multiple times. There's a sense in which they must have known what they were going to get. Surely?
“Obviously, the classical job of portraiture was to recall what someone looked like. There was no other way of knowing. Therefore, if you could incentivise the artist to make you look better, then that’s what people would assume you looked like. As soon as photography came around, that wasn’t the case. So yes, you might try to get people on a good day rather than a bad day but if you lie about someone, that’s going to make both artist and subject look ridiculous.” What people really mind, Yeo says, is age. “There have been plenty of times where I’ve been worried that I’ve made someone look overbearing or cold and it’s never been an issue. The only thing that ever bothers people is if they think I’ve made them look too old. You can make someone look as unpleasant as you like, but if you make them look five years younger, then that’s OK.” He tries not to let people peek until the portrait is finished. Their reaction can influence — even unconsciously — the way he works and the subject may find themselves trying to look more serious or more cheerful, or start feeling self-conscious or self-critical.
(From the same article.)
So the more I look into this, the less I feel I understand.
It's been reported elsewhere that when Charles's portrait was unveiled, Camilla said "Yes, you've got him." But, going back to Yeo's comments above about, you can make people look unpleasant, but not old.... hmm. Because to me, Charles looks a bit of both.
Publicly, though, at least, everyone involved seems happy with it. I'll end with a link to an article that has a lot more commentary from Yeo about what he says he was thinking and intending, but which also reports the mixed reactions to the piece. Given his awareness of the line he has to walk in order to keep being commissioned by people like this, though, I wouldn't go so far as to say that his statements completely refute the possibility of the portrait as some kind of commentary.
i cant get over the king charles portrait. they made that thing to age in his place. that painting hangs in the house of a too-friendly family you find in the post apocalyptic wasteland who inexplicably has a ready supply of fresh meat. if mario jumped into that painting he wouldn't find a charming platformer he would be flayed and hanged like a medieval criminal by an unseeable force in a droning red void. that painting is a color blindness test for people who work in IT but believe in the divine right of kings. that painting is going to weep the sequel to blood. after he dies charles is gonna crawl outta that thing like sadako.

Remembering Wendell Castle
Celebrated American designer, craftsman, and educator Wendell Castle (1932-2018), who has been called the “father of the art furniture movement,” passed away on January 20 at age 85. Blending the sculptural and functional throughout his six-decade career, Castle created bold, organic, sometimes whimsical furniture forms in wood, plastic, metal and concrete, tirelessly exploring materials and crafting techniques that included stack-laminating wood, hand carving, casting, and lately, programming a computer-controlled CNC milling robot to sculpt his designs. A long-time faculty member of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Castle received many accolades, including the Leadership Medal in 2015 from the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.; the Smithsonian’s Visionary Award in 2014; and the Eastman Medal from the University of Rochester in 2013. There are five Wendell Castle works, including design drawings, in Cooper Hewitt’s permanent collection and Castle’s designs are in the collections of museums around the world.
Castle’s Triad Chair was the subject of an  Object of the Day entry in 2016 and is reprinted here in memory of this inquisitive and innovative designer.
Triad Chair, 2006; Designed by Wendell Castle (American,1932-2018); USA; gilt fiberglass; H x W x D: 94 x 91.4 x 86.4 cm (37 x 36 x 34 in.); Gift of Wendell Castle, Courtesy of Barry Friedman, Ltd.; 2008-27-1
Is it possible for a chair to be organic, imaginative, and even a little bit sexy? Perhaps, if it is one of the works by American designer Wendell Castle. Castle’s Triad chair is a piece composed of curvilinear sweeps of gilt fiberglass that make a strangely inviting seat. At the risk of pushing the pun too far, it seems that the Triad chair is a gold-medal example of the major aesthetic principles and ideas that inform Castle’s work. This defining style is, above all, one that embraces biomorphic, expressive, organic forms and eschews any semblance of the square. These principles are evident throughout Castle’s design process, as seen in his sketches for the chair.
Drawing, Design for “Triad” Chair, 2007; Designed by Wendell Castle (American, 1932-2018); Marking pen on paper; Gift of Friedman Benda and Wendell Castle, 2013-34-1.
An individual standing in front of the Triad chair might be confused as to whether he or she should simply admire the chair or take a seat. On one hand, the chair is sculptural; on the other, it recalls a functional wooden Adirondack chair. Indeed, Castle’s work challenges the traditional ways one might interact with both art and furniture. Art + Auction magazine wrote that he was “… the only major American designer practicing on the cusp of art and design.”[1] Regarding his own work, Castle proclaimed that he wanted his furniture to be “collected like art and appreciated like art,”[2] and throughout his career was influenced by designer Don Wallance’s ideas regarding the convergence of art and utility. The Triad chair certainly seems to teeter on this cusp.
However, viewers and sitters alike can appreciate the chair’s tongue-in-cheek wit and its nod to history, both international and personal. The gilt fiberglass recalls the fashionable and traditionally popular style of gilt wood furniture, often seen on Louis XV-style French upholstered armchairs. Castle updated the base material from wood to fiberglass, which wasn’t developed industrially until the 1930s. He also covered the entire chair in gilt, poking fun at the taste for extravagance that such ornamentation could reveal.
The Triad chair draws from Castle’s own history of work, as well. His interest in creating caricatures of traditional furniture was evident early in his career. This experimentation can be seen in the inventive installation of a table and chairs in graphic designer Douglas Baker’s dining room in 1966. Castle’s experiments in creating plastic furniture in the 70s, such as the Molar settee of 1969, reveal a harbinger’s predilection for the now-popular amorphous “blob” form that artists create using computer programs.
As a piece designed in the twenty-first century following a long and inventive career, perhaps we can understand the Triad chair to be a culmination of some of Castle’s most developed ideas. Or, if you’re unsure, you can take a seat and think it over.
This Object of the Day was written by Kaitlin Macholz , a 2016 Peter Krueger Intern in Cooper Hewitt’s Product Design and Decorative Arts Department. She has a BA in Art History from Williams College, Williamstown, MA.

BOOKS, PROCEEDINGS of congresses The book by Dr. Korotkov “Human Energy Field. Study with GDV Bioelectrography” has been translated into French by Jean-Marie Danze. Proceedings of the VIII International Congress “Science. Information. Spirit.” 2004. St. Petersburg. Russia. The edition is devoted to the VIII International Congress on Bioelectrography which took place 3-5, July, 2004 in St.-Petersburg. In this book, articles reflecting the basic directions of researches in the field of medical, applied bioelectrography and water study are collected. The materials submitted in the book predetermine availability of the further researches on improvement of the method GDV and its subsequent introduction into the international medical, sports and research practice. Measuring Energy Fields: State of the Science. Author: K. Korotkov Volume I in the GDV Bioelectrography series presents recent studies and applications of the Gas Discharge Visualisation (GDV) technique. Our previous books were created by a small group of associates. This volume presents a wide range of articles by authors from different countries. After seven years of development, the GDV techniques entered a new stage of “catalytic growth” with innovative methods emerging from various laboratory and clinical settings. Research by independent groups around the world demonstrates that the GDV technique provides methods for recording subtle dynamics in the energy fields of objects with various natures. GDV assessment methods are demonstrated to have a wide range of important applications in medicine, sports performance, materials testing, as well as analytic studies of human consciousness and spiritual healing. “Human Energy Field: study with GDV bioelectrography” Author: K. Korotkov This book is dedicated to the presentation of the scientific foundations and practical applications of the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technique. This technique represents a revolutionary new method for the study of biological subjects, namely biological energy fields. This research extends scientific tradition, developed in Russia in the twentieth century. The Human Energy Field carries information on physical, mental and spiritual states of a human being, and the GDV Bioelectrography technique is the first method in the world which gives an opportunity to study this information. Utilizing the latest advances in technology, such as microelectronics, computer imaging, and data mining, scientists have been able to create an entirely new class of scientific instruments that allow the practitioner to view, measure and analyze biological subjects in a manner that has never been possible before. The GDV technique has been found to have numerous highly important applications in medicine, sports, consciousness studies, material testing and other areas, discussed in this book… Whether the reader is a physicist, poet or philosopher, this technique offers an entirely new understanding of the world in which we live. Each encounter simply confirms the wisdom contained in all the holy books of every religion. We are all one. We are all connected. We are the interrelation of Matter, Information and Spirit. Table of Contents Ch.1 Introduction on GDV technique. Part I. PRACTICE. Ch.2 BEO GDV Analysis (protocol, principles of recording and analyzing GDV-grams, BEO-grams, separation of psychological and physical energy fields, estimates of anxiety and stress, right-left correlations, measurements of the energetics of Chakras, measuring the influence of mental processes on human energy field, influence of individuals, effect of perspiration,, testing of medication and substances, GDV therapy. Ch.3 Dependence of GDV parameters on age (entropy of biological organisms, BEO-gram characteristics of ages, children and youths, adualts, and elderly, transition to the end of physical life, posthumous state. Ch.7 Sport (evaluation of the psycho-physical fitness of athletes based on GDV method). Ch.8 Testing Liquids (distilled water characteristics, time dynamics of gas discharge around liquid drops). Part III. SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS. Ch.9 Physical approach. Ch.10 Biophysical approach. Ch.11 Mind-body connections. Ch.12 Oriental philosophy and medical approach. Ch.13 Entropy-synrgetic approach. Ch.14 Fields of biological subjects. Ch.15 Essay on consciousness. Part IV. TECHNIQUES. Ch.16 Studies of GDV parameters of various materials (water, homeopathic solutions information-coded medicines, blood, urine, other biological liquids, plants, foods, minerals and precious stones). Ch.17 Stability and reproducibility of GDV-graphy data. Ch.18 GDV camera design. Ch.19 GDV software. Ch.20 “Quantum-Health” system of health analysis. “Aura and Consciousness: New stage of scientific understanding” Author: K. Korotkov What is Aura from modern point of view and how it may be studied and measured? How we can measure consciousness influence to the physical world? How GDV technique is related to Kirlian photography? All these topics and a lot of others are discussed in this book. Mainly it is dedicated to results of GDV technique basics and practical applications – the technique has drawn strength both from quantitative processing and the new scientific understandings of subtle dimensions. GDV technique benefits both from the beauty of colorful star-like pictures and from the accuracy of their statistical analysis.

Hyperallergic: The Politics of Adversity in Pope.L’s Flint Water Project

DETROIT — Conceived by Pope.L as “an art installation, a performance, and an intervention,” Flint Water Project at Detroit’s artist-run gallery What Pipeline expands on the Chicago-based artist’s social practice, using art to raise awareness of the crisis in Flint, Michigan, which resulted in lead poisoning, Legionnaire’s disease, and deaths from Flint’s contaminated water supply, and to raise money for the citizens of Flint.
The crisis began in April of 2014 when Flint, under a state-appointed emergency manager, changed its water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River to save money. In what began with a ceremonial “closing of the valve” after 50 years of water routed from Detroit’s treatment plant, and assurances from a representative of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality that “Individuals shouldn’t notice any difference,” residents began complaining almost immediately about the smell and color of the water. By August 2014, E. coli and total coliform bacteria were detected in the water, and by the start of 2015 elevated lead levels were found.

In January 2016, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and President Obama declared a state of emergency in Genesee County. Every child under the age of six in Flint has been exposed to lead poisoning, thousands of residents have sustained long-term, irreversible damage to their health from the water, and the Legionnaire’s outbreak led to 12 deaths. Although city officials are now declaring the water safe, Flint residents received the same word three years ago, incorrectly, and many are still wary.
Flint Water Project, supported by the Knight Foundation as part of the Knight Arts Challenge and a Kickstarter campaign, came about when What Pipeline invited Pope.L to create a project in Detroit. The Kickstarter page states, “When Pope.L was asked by What Pipeline to do a commission for Detroit, he felt that whatever he did it should not re-victimize the city as had been done too often in the past. What if Detroit could be the hero and come to the rescue of another Midwest city in need?”
The project merges conceptual art with social practice, raising money for United Way of Genesee County and the nonprofit organization Hydrate Detroit by selling bottles of contaminated Flint water as an edition of 1,200 (signed and unsigned). The one-room gallery is transformed into a water-bottling facility and storefront: bottles of water sourced from the home of Flint resident Tiantha Williams and bearing “Flint Water (16 fl. oz. non-potable)” labels are displayed on single shelves, with more bottles in stacked cardboard boxes.
The walls, papered with images of the bottles, are lined with unframed photographs by Flint photographer Eric Dutro — including corroded pipes, a toddler with a Fiji brand water bottle, an advertisement for water-related lawsuits, and a graffiti-ed “nope” accompanying the slogan “Flint lives matter” — along with water-themed artworks selected by Pope.L from What Pipeline’s collection. There is also a copy of a letter from Flint Mayor Karen Weaver informing residents of the status of the city’s tap water (noting, at the time of sending, that unfiltered tap water remained unsafe to drink). Gallery associates filled bottles from a large tank filled with water from Williams’s house over the course of the exhibition.

While Pope.L’s practice belongs to a lineage of politically and socially engaged art that evokes the likes of Mierle Laderman Ukeles and Suzanne Lacy, his interventions have a level of ambiguity that raises questions along with awareness. His 2004-2006 project, The Black Factory, for instance, invited discussions of race, class, gender and democracy, while proceeds from its gift shop (stocked with donations from visitors that represented blackness to them) went to local organizations. Similarly, in Pull!, from 2013, teams of Cleveland residents pulled a truck through the city to inspire a city-wide conversation about labor.
As Sarah Rose Sharp noted in an article for Hyperallergic, Flint Water Project raises questions about art and commerce by repurposing potentially toxic water as art. It also politicizes the readymade, positing the bottles as symbols of gross negligence and misconduct on the part of city and state officials, and the dire consequences. While the gesture itself is admirable — and the funds raised are urgently needed — the bottles beg the question: Can symbols of adversity double as symbols of agency?
Symbols of privation can create the illusion of a powerless citizenry, something that Flint residents have been combating out of anger and necessity: When the state offered little to no resolution, locals distributed shipments of donated water (some from private corporations), organized protests, and lobbied Snyder’s administration and the EPA. While the role of Detroit as a hero to Flint strengthens the alliance between two beleaguered Michigan cities and empowers Detroit, it serves as a reminder that Detroit’s growth over the past decade does not extend to Flint and that both cities have too often been cast in the role of victim.
Pope.L auctions a bottle of Flint Water signed by the artist during the opening of “Flint Water,” September 7, 2017 at What Pipeline, Detroit
Both Detroit and Flint have long been targets of national media exploiting the area’s economic and social hardships. In 2009, Time magazine ran a cover story entitled “The Tragedy of Detroit” with a bird’s-eye view of dilapidated structures, and in 2013 the same magazine ran a Detroit cover story with the ominous headline “Is Your City Next?” Images of the city’s architectural ruins and abandoned homes are portrayed as emblematic of the city, and national pundits preyed on Detroit’s bankruptcy, brought on by corruption in the office of former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. (Several years ago, someone visiting Detroit told me she wanted to see the city “while it’s still around.”) Flint, too, has endured bankruptcy, job loss, violence and a diminishing population, down over the past 50 years from 200,000 to just below 100,000.
These issues have far-flung sociopolitical ramifications, but so too does the perception of adversity; the effects of both are evident in Trump’s victory (by 11,000 votes) in Michigan, traditionally a blue state, and exacerbated by the exploitation of citizens and resources by officials seeking financial solvency or personal gain. In Flint, with state-appointed officials making decisions that directly impacted residents’ health and lives, the general population was granted no initial participation, and, furthermore, no hint that they needed to speak out — or avoid the water supply.
Although Pope.L’s involvement and thoughtful approach to Flint Water Project are central to its success (with sales of the bottles picking up toward the end of the show’s run and continuing through What Pipeline and, potentially, other museums), the artist’s collaboration with locals from Flint, Detroit, and surrounding suburbs attests to the fortitude of Michigan citizens to help each other in times of crisis. While Dutro’s photographs, Williams’s tap water, and the efforts of What Pipeline co-owners Alivia Zivich and Daniel Sperry are prominent examples of such cooperation, less visible factors like Kickstarter contributions from Michigan residents and preliminary assistance from Sandra Jones at Greater Holy Temple Church in Flint have bolstered the project.
Pope.L’s attention to the crisis also speaks to a connection between Detroit, Flint, and Chicago, despite differences between the metropolitan areas  and vastly different national perceptions of the cities. The populist element of his social practice echoes the history of Flint — birthplace of the UAW and a national symbol of workers’ rights — while it defies the moneyed exclusivity of the art world. The price tag on the bottles ($20 unsigned; $250 signed) opens their availability beyond wealthy collectors. The tank, which cannot be reused due to possible contamination, is a prime artwork or artifact for a museum collection.

State handling of the water contamination exposes the race and class dimensions of a purportedly politically neutral crisis: 56 percent of Flint’s population is black and over 40 percent is below the poverty level. Flint native Michael Moore has called the crisis a “hate crime based on this race hatred of this particular [Republican] party” and argued that such an issue in a predominantly white city would likely be remedied more promptly. Pope.L’s presence as a black conceptual artist is a stark contrast to those responsible for the crisis, many of whom (including Governor Snyder) are white Republicans; his examination of race relations and identity throughout the breadth of his practice adds an oblique commentary to the exhibition.
By insinuating questions into the often-didactic field of social practice, the exhibition sheds light on the multiple issues that can arise with crises and responses. Ultimately, the attention and aid provided by Flint Water Project are its more important accomplishments, but it’s time Michigan and the nation wipe out Flint’s and Detroit’s need for the word “need.”
Flint Water Project continues at What Pipeline (3525 W. Vernor Highway, Detroit, Michigan) through today. Flint Water bottles are available through December 31 from What Pipelibe. All proceeds to go United Way of Genesee County and Hydrate Detroit.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, which currently has three thriving locations in San Diego, has been purchased by PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. of Topeka, Kansas, who will take over leadership of the company effective immediately. Recognized by Roast Magazine as Micro Roaster of the Year in 2012, a national once-in-a-lifetime award, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has been at the forefront of putting premiere coffee on the map in San Diego since opening it’s original location on La Jolla Boulevard in Bird Rock over a decade ago in 2006. Owner Chuck Patton first started roasting in 2001 with a do-it-yourself home coffee roaster, a fateful gift from his wife Elke.
BRCR Founder Chuck Patton
“We are thrilled to partner with PT’s Coffee Roasting Co., it will give us the opportunity to expand the Bird Rock brand beyond San Diego and continue developing our Direct Trade programs and partner farms,” explained Bird Rock Coffee Roasters founder Chuck Patton.
PT’s Coffee Roasting, who was named Coffee Roaster of the Year in 2009 by Roast Magazine, plans to further develop the retail and wholesale efforts of the Bird Rock Coffee Roasters brand, intending to open more San Diego and northern California location in the future. Jeff Taylor, Co-Founder and CEO of PT’s Coffee, will be relocating to San Diego to lead the team. There he will work with Bird Rock founder Chuck Patton, who will take on the role of Head Coffee Buyer for both companies. Taylor and Patton have known each other for nearly 10 years, working side-by-side in the industry. The two companies found common ground in their similar Direct Trade philosophies, working toward the goal of creating the highest-quality coffee possible from origin to cup.
“We look forward to continuing to innovate within the Direct Trade model and relentlessly pursuing the perfect cup of coffee,” says PT Coffee Roasting CEO JeffTaylor. “Bird Rock has consistently lived up to our motto of, Without the Love, It’s Just Coffee, and we are thrilled to be working with them to grow their brand.”
PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. began in 1993 as a single coffee shop in Topeka, Kansas. An intense passion for coffee led the team to venture into roasting in 1997. Now, nearing 25 years later, their group of explorers is still committed to sourcing, roasting, and drinking the best coffees in the world.
